Boston (EON) A new report has found that women who undergo breast implants are three times more likely to commit suicide.
The research was published in this months issue of Annals of Plastic Surgery and confirms the link between breast implants and an increased suicide risk.
The study was led by Loren Lipworth who stated that there is a strong risk of suicide linked to plastic surgery, especially on the breast. Many plastic surgeons it is being suggested should seek mental health screening for women who want to have breast implants.
Over 3,500 Swedish women were looked at in the study, all went through breast implant surgery between 1965 and 1993. They found that the suicide rate was three times higher for women with breast implants at an average of 19-years after the follow-up.
Suicide risks did not increase after the first 10 years after the breast implant surgery. From 10 to 19 years though the risk increased by 4.5 times. After 20 years it jumped to 6 times.
