Cops arrested on corruption charge

The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of the Jamaica Consta-bulary Force on Thursday arrested two policemen on reasonable suspicion for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act and conspiracy to commit a criminal offence.

The arrested lawmen are Detective Sergeant Winston Pollack and Constable Tyrone Bryan.

bought passport

Information is that in February of this year the complainant, who is the proprietor of a supermarket and wholesale in St Catherine, paid the detective sergeant $115,000 to obtain a Jamaican passport.

The complainant, who is a foreign national, is the holder of a work permit to work in Jamaica and was not entitled to a Jamaican passport.

Detective Sergeant Pollack reportedly conspired with Constable Tyrone Bryan to whom this money, or some of it, was paid, to employ another individual to secure the passport.

The passport was eventually obtained and handed over to the complainant.

fraud discovered

On Thursday of this week, the complainant visited the passport office where he used the illegally obtained passport as a means of identification in applying for a passport for his daughter. During the process, however, immigration officials discovered that the passport was not genuine.

The Anti-Corruption investigators were subsequently called in and an investigation led to the arrest of the two officers, who are now in custody waiting to be interviewed in the presence of their attorneys.

In a release issued on the matter, the ACB said it was advising members of the public to use official government agencies when seeking to obtain official documents and to report all instances of suspected corruption to the Anti-Corruption Branch.
