DJ Quik might possibly be one of the most talkative artists on the planet. But after news of him speaking on Detox hit the Internet [click to read], the multi-dimensional Compton native has been censoring himself. After much prying, HipHopDX convinced Quik to tell fans what to expect on Dr. Dres Detox as well as his upcoming collaborations with Kurupt, Rakim, Snoop Dogg and Teddy Riley.
I was just listening to some Dr. Dre music recently, and it hit me so hard that I got emotional about it,Quik says of his preview of Detox. Then I had to think to myself, Well, what else would I expect from Dr. Dre? Catching himself before he could give any concrete details, Quik added, I cant talk about Detox no more. But Im so excited for yall to hear it that I cant f**kin wait.
Quik was a bit more forthcoming when questioned about former Aftermath signee, Rakim. He neither confirmed nor denied rumors that he flew to New York to lay down some new music with Rakim Allah, but he seemed to have some inside information about recent work with one of Hip Hop's greatest emcees of all time.
He also keeps to himself a lot, and he doesnt party out like that,Quik noted. When he writes, he writes seriously. I got a chance to listen to his new stuff recently, and he still sounds like Rakim. Hes still that guy with or without a new record. So, Im giving him his time, and when he wanna f**k with me Ima be ready. Just know when he calls, Sergeant is gone be ready.
Quik explained that he was more or less retired, before Snoop Dogg [click to read] asked him to help out with the 2008 album, Ego Trippin [click to read]. Having been rejuvenated by logging hours in the studio with Snoop, Kurupt and Teddy Riley [click to read], two more projects were birthed, Quik and Kurupts Blaqout album and an as-yet-unnamed project with Quik, Riley and Snoop (QDT).
I think we made a good record and its starting to make sense to us, because we did something that we enjoy,Quik says of Blaqout. We didnt do it to compete against nobody; we just did it for the sake of music. Case in pointwe got a dope studio that captured the vibe and fit perfectly. Its not even like work. Were just stretching out and having a good time.
Although the QDT project has no set release date, Quik says that the musical direction may be surprising to some people.
The next inception is that were gonna go more electronica with it,Quik explained. Its gonna be kind of electric. Its funk music, its dance music, but its not my old gangster rap or Teddys New Jack Swing. Its Snoop doing Ego Trippin or his earlier stuff. But I cant snitch on it.
