Superintendent McArthur Sutherland testified Tuesday that 26-year-old labourer Sheldon Pusey told him that he killed 64-year-old Ambassador Peter King, but it was in self-defence.
Sutherland said Pusey made the disclosure shortly after he cautioned him when he saw him at the Half-Way Tree Police Station lockup about 8 a.m. on March 6, 2007. The cop said he cautioned Pusey that he was not obliged to say anything unless he wished to do so and that it would be submitted as written evidence.
He said Pusey told him that he wanted to talk to him in private and then said, "A me kill Peter King, but a self-defence."
Pusey said he did not have a lawyer and Superintendent Sutherland said he got duty counsel Berry Bryan to represent Pusey during an interview later that day.
Berry is representing Pusey at his trial, which began on January 19, in the Home Circuit Court.
Sutherland said he asked Pusey 129 questions in the presence of his lawyer. The questions and answers were tendered into evidence Tuesday.
The Crown, represented by prosecutors Caroline Hay and Dahlia Findlay, is alleging that sometime on March 19 or 20, 2006, King was stabbed and chopped several times at his home at 11A Waterloo Road, Kingston 10.
Senior Puisne Judge Marva McIntosh is presiding at the trial.
