First, it was a monkey in Mount Rosser. Now it is a male hog in St. Thomas which is attracting superstitious Jamaicans by the droves, most of them willing to shell out as much as $4,000 to ride the hog in an attempt to boost their economic earnings, acquire visas or cure afflictions of the heart. Members of the community say the hog has special powers and is possessed by a demon. Once you ride the hog for a long enough time, you will be able to acquire the powers of divination, fortune telling and other psychic abilities.
Whatever their reason, Jamaicans are flocking to ride the hog in earnest. Ah nuff people ah ride the hog. Most of the people who do it come from market and dem a try get more money and prosperity and sell more goods, one man, a resident of the community for over 40 years, told XtraNews.
Mi never see nothing like this before, de people dem come all hours ah the night fi deal wid it and the whole ah dem wear old sneakers. According to residents, the trek to get to the hog is not an easy one because he is kept in a large pen buried deep in the bushes of the community. The intrepid at heart, who fear poverty and deprivation more than a possibly fatal hog bite, apparently need an old pair of sneakers to navigate the muddy, filthy conditions of the pen.
