Up to press time last night, firefighters were still busy trying to contain the fire raging at the Riverton City dump.

Four units, two from the York Park Fire Station, one from Rollington Town and one from Trench Town, were trying to put out the blaze. Heavy equipment, including tractors, was also in use.

The fire began sometime yesterday morning.

In July last year, the landfill burned for days, blanketing sections of the Corporate Area and Spanish Town in smoke and forcing nearby businesses to shut their doors.
