A male teacher of the Spot Valley High School in St. James is now battling for life in hospital after he was attacked by relatives of a grade nine male student yesterday. A male colleague who came to his assistance was also attacked; he was treated and released yesterday. The Western Mirror understands that the incident took place in the afternoon as the teacher conducted his class. Principal, Dorrett Chambers, in a telephone interview with this newspaper, revealed that another teacher had reprimanded a student for a particular matter. The student sneaked out of the class and managed to call relatives. Mrs. Chambers added that the boys mother got wind of what had happened and rushed to the school. She went to the office where she was being spoken to by officials. While the concerned mother was in the office, three males, who are said to be the boys relatives came onto the school compound, went to a class that was in session. The men said good afternoon to the teacher and he responded. He was then surprised from behind as the knifemen inflicted several stab wounds on the teacher, who then collapsed. A male colleague who heard the commotion rushed to his assistance and was cut in the abdomen. The three men then fled the scene. The men were rushed to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where the teacher who was cut in the abdomen was treated and released while the other was undergoing surgery up to press time. Principal Chambers noted that neither of the teachers had come in contact with the student. Teachers and other staff members expressed hurt over the situation. She said that the teacher, who is now battling for life, is one who would give his all on the job.
Damn! Imagine the institution that supposed to uplift and educate the youth isn't safe anymore. People have no respect for school walls or even churches these days it seems.
