THIS is the harrowing picture of a cupboard in which a two-year-old toddler was allegedly locked up for being naughty even though she was afraid of the dark. Zahbeena Navsarka, 21, and her partner Subhan Anwar, 21, are on trial accused of murdering Navsarka's daughter Sanam.
A witness today told their trial how the couple went boozing with friends while the infant was left home alone less than a fortnight before her death.
Giving evidence against the accused couple at Bradford Crown Court, West Yorks, neighbour Rosie McGlade told how Navsarka and Anwar were scolded by a friend of hers for partying while neglecting the toddler.
Mum-of-one Rosie, 21, who lived next to the couple in Huddersfield, West Yorks, told how she had seen scratches and bruises on the tot.
'Locked up' ... little Sanam The young mother, who gave mouth-to-mouth to Sanam when she died on May 8, also told the jury how Anwar locked her in a dark cupboard as punishment for misbehaving and called her a little b*****d.
Under questioning by prosecuting QC Julian Goose, Rosie told of the night Navsarka and Anwar known to her as Subbi left the child alone while they went drinking next door.
The party, the court heard, was less than two weeks before Sanam died from fats entering her *lo**stream caused by untreated fractures to her thigh bones.
Injuries
Brunette Rosie said: We had drinks with them the day after Subbi had his birthday. We started with a little drink at their house and then we went round to ours.
"They left and put Sanam to bed and they came back round to carry on the party.
The court heard another party-goer, named as Lisa, got concerned when she learned the couple had left Sanam alone while they continued their fun.
Lisa told them to go back, said Rosie. They went and brought Sanam back to the party. I dont know what they did with her then.
A post-mortem examination after Sanams death found 107 injuries on her little body including several bruises and fractures to all four of her limbs.
The court previously heard how all the breakages happened between two and four weeks before she died and the parents did not seek any medical attention.
On the night of her death the couple told doctors and police that Sanam had drowned in the bath after Anwar left her playing alone in water up to her armpits.
A pathologist established the cause of death as Fat Embolism Syndrome fatty deposits from broken bones entering the *lo**stream.
Navsarka and Anwar deny murder and also face an alternative charge of failing to protect the child.
