ATHENS, Ga. -- A third grader in Athens has been released into his mother's custody after being arrested on charges that he brought a knife to school and threatened two classmates. Athens-Clarke Police said the 10-year-old boy at Fowler Drive Elementary tried to attack a student on Monday and threatened another for turning him in. The youngster was charged with aggravated assault, making a terroristic threat and possession of a weapon on school grounds. He was released on the condition he receive counseling while his case is pending. The school says he has been suspended.
Police said the boy told them he purchased the knife for $2 to protect himself from rival gang members.
