NEED TO KNOW IF I ATTEMPTED THIS QUESTION THE CORRECT WAY.
Gross receipts: Six thousand tickets are to be sold for a concert, some for $9 each and the rest for & $15 each. If x is the number of $9 tickets sold, write an algebraic expression that represents the gross receipts from ticket sales,assuming all tickets are sold. Simplify the expression.
no. of ticket= 6,000 some for $9 rest for $15 number of $9 ticket sold = x
First of all the question ask for the Gross receipts in the form of an algebraic expression. There is not enough information to solve the question, only to simplify it.
Please note that 6,000 is the number of tickets and not the amount of money received for the tickets therefore a statement like
$15+$9x=6,000 would not be logical. "6000" is not cash but the actual amount of tickets.
So lets break down the question;
To find the Gross receipts, which is a cute way of saying the money we make after selling the 6000 tickets
we have to add the money we make from $9 tickets to what we make from$15 tickets. the information given is that 'x' is the amount of $9 tickets sold and what is left are $15 tickets.
so to calculate the money we made from $9 tickets we have to multiply the cost of the ticket by the amount sold which is x. That would be 9x
Then to calculate the money made from $15 tickets we would multiply the amount of tickets left after selling the $9 tickets by 15
which is (6000 - x)15 note we have to take away the amount of $9 tickets sold to find out the tickets that are left which would be the amount of $15 tickets. I hope this is clear.
THEREFORE to express all of that in a logical equation, it would look something like this:
moyo chinojermz is correct u cant simplify 9X-15X +90000 because if you did then you would not account for the tickets that were sold for $15. so you would get a different answer if you use 6(-x+1500). say 1000 ticket were sold for $9 that means 5000 were sold $15. If we use the first formula:
9(1000) -15(1000) + 90000 = 84000
the second formula:
6(-1000+1500) = 6(500) = 3000
two different answer. The first one is correct because 9(1000) + 15(5000) = $84000
