Although Portmore-based deejay Deva Brat was granted bail last week, he has not been spotted in any of his usual haunts since his announced release. One thing is certain that when Deva Brat emerges from prison, the entertainment landscape will be vastly changed from the state it was in before his unfortunate incarceration. Before he was imprisoned, deejay Spice and Beenie Man were still at odds, Beenie Man and D'Angel were still estranged, and Vybz Kartel had not yet announced the arrival of Daggering Condoms, and oh yeah, Munga was still a dominant force on the charts. There has still not been a Deva sighting as yet but we have since got a release from Deva's management team that claims that Deva Brat is the one who created the Portmore Empire.
In a release issued on the website, prgirl.com, Deva Brat is reported as stating that "he created Portmore Empire when Kartel was an Alliance member."
The website further explains: "At that time Deva Bratt was in a feud with Aidonia, Munga and Busy. He goes on to say that subsequently, Kartel was thrown out of the Alliance by Bounty Killer. Kartel realized that Deva Bratt had the perfect name, and perfect idea. Deva stated that Kartel took it and licensed it in his name, without Deva Bratt being named as the founder of Portmore Empire. Next, Kartel tried to sign Deva Bratt as an artist, to the newly-licensed, Portmore Empire, but Deva Bratt refused. He states this was because, instead of Kartel licensing Portmore Empire with him as a business partner, he simply wanted to sign him as an artist, and have full ownership of the Portmore Empire name. Deva Bratt says he never made this an issue because he was content that he was making music and doing what he loved."
Throughout his incarceration there have been rumors of turmoil within Portmore Empire, however Deva Bratt has remained neutral about the rumors. He says the reason "insiders" would say he is not a part of the Empire is because, some don't respect the fact that he is someone who leads and will not succumb to the trends and hype of others around him. An example would be Alliance vs Portmore Empire. Even when Kartel and Mavado were at war, Deva Bratt continued to hail Mavado, Bounty and other Alliance members. In closing, he states "Deva Bratt built Portmore Empire, Portmore Empire never built Deva Bratt".
In the interim, sources within the Empire said that only artistes signed to Adidjaheim Records were considered members of the Portmore Empire, namely 'Doza Medicine, Blak Ryno, Shawn Storm, CP Inc., Lisa Hype, Earthworm and Jah Vinchi". Checks revealed that the Portmore Empire name and logo has already been registered for use with the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office (JIPO) under the name of one Adidjah Palmer.
"Deva is a yute weh mi know most of my life and you have to understand him fi deal wid him, Deva just move different. What he is being accused of is a serious crime and he needs to resolve it because it is damaging to what we're building here. Deva is not signed to the Empire so he is not an official member, ah just so the ting set. I wish him all the luck with whatever he is doing," one insider told One876Entertainment.com.
