They're one of those modern day scourges in Toronto neighbourhoods, potentially putting families, children and those nearby in danger.
And as of now, there are 63 fewer of them.
Toronto Police have confirmed they launched a massive offensive early Thursday morning targeting marijuana grow ops across the GTA. Details of the secret sweeps have just emerged and judging by the bra** being assembled to tell you about it, it's likely to have made a significant dent in the supply on the streets.
Police don't often break out the top cops to outline an undercover event but they're having Chief Bill Blair front an afternoon press conference to explain what they found. The raids were a joint effort with York Regional Police.
The details are expected after 3:30pm at Police Headquarters. Check back for the very latest.
How To Spot A Marijuana Grow Op In Your Neighbourhood
The homes look just like any other on the block. And you may not even be aware something nefarious is going on behind those closed doors. But there are some things that may raise your suspicions and all it takes is a sharp eye and a willingness to report your concerns to cops to make it stop. Here are some common signs of a grow op:
Little or no human activity
Neglected lawns and gardens
Windows always covered and full of condensation
During winter months, no snow on roof
People coming and going at odd hours, pulling into the garage and closing the door quickly
Basement lights on all day long or bright lights escaping from other covered windows
Garbage is minimal and may contain used soil and plant material
A strong skunk-like odour emanating from the home
Items being brought into the home include soil planters, fans, large lights
