A former New York firefighter who torched a firehouse door as a prank has been sentenced to prison by a judge who said his actions were "beyond stupid."
Michael Izzo apologized Thursday for the incident, which occurred at Engine 34's quarters in Hell's Kitchen on Oct. 27, 2007. He had pleaded guilty in March to felony reckless endangerment.
Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Laura Ward sentenced Izzo to one to three years in prison.
Izzo's co-defendant, 31-year-old Richard Capece, pleaded guilty in March to misdemeanor reckless endangerment. Ward sentenced him in May to five months in jail and 100 hours of community service.
The two admitted pouring a flammable liquid on the door to start the fire. Another firefighter saw smoke and alerted colleagues. No one was hurt.
