GROWING UP in the music business can be challenging for children, but talented violinist, Jessica Yapp, continues to strive ahead with ease.

A musical genius, Jessica has been amazing audiences from very young, having yearned to play the violin since she was one. Now at 14 years old, Jessica keeps reeling in the performances, having blown away audiences at shows such as the World Skills Competition put on by HEART Trust, various fund-raising events, including the recent fund-raiser put on by Lorna Golding, among countless others.

Although just a fourth former at Campion College, Jessica has been gaining considerable media coverage and recognition of her talent. According to Jessica, she is always treated like just another student. C****ining classical music with dancehall and reggae/pop, Jessica has developed a signature sound that she plans to further augment.

Jessica plans to eventually pursue medicine, but music will always be a part of her life. "It sometimes gets kinda difficult cause I like to consider it as having two jobs, music and school. I plan to do music, but still have another career," she said.

An interesting life

For Jessica's mother, Rose-Marie Yapp, she has no fears for her daughter in the ever-changing and sometimes cut-throat business. She told The Gleaner, "Everyone we've dealt with deals with her in a positive way. Her manager deals with her career very well."

Mrs Yapp strongly believes her daughter can pursue medicine and music, as she cites pianist Dr Kathy Brown as a successful example. "I think it's a good thing her doing music and being able to pursue them both. She is blessed, she can do music yet focus on school. It makes life more interesting," Rose-Marie commented.

Jessica has quite a few shows coming up, including one trip to the United States.
