After wowing the audience at the National Skills Competition launch last week with her renditions of I Will Survive and Bob Marley' s Jammin, Jessica Yap has been receiving a lot of bookings for a variety of corporate events.
The precocious 15 year old violinist has become somewhat of a national gem in her native island, Jamaica since captivating her audience at the early age of 3 years old when she began performing publicly. Not undaunted by the media and press who have followed her career over the years, she stays focused and determined to improve all aspects of her existence.
At the age of seven years, Jessica became the youngest in the Caribbean to gain a distinction in grade 5 theory examination with the Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music in London, England. By the age of 13, Jessica achieved a diploma in violin performance (dip, abrsm). She was also awarded a scholarship to attend University of India for the summer of 2006 in which she studied with renowned teachers Mimi Zweig and Carol Cole. Jessica has been the recipient of Most Outstanding Performer for three consecutive years in the Music Teacher's Festival held in Jamaica biennially. She was also a finalist in Florida's Music Festival at age 9.
A student of Campion College, where she is a tennis player for her school team, she is widely regarded as one of our leading musicians in Jamaica. Though classically trained, Jessica has opened her repertoire to encompass all genres of music including reggae, jazz and R&B. She has appeared at international events such as the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, the Miss Jamaica Universe Pageant, performances with the New England Orchestra and shows in Washington and Florida.
