JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police are looking for a gunman they said they believe may be responsible for stealing purses from two women as they arrive for work at Southside office parks. According to the police reports, a man approached each of them as they got out of their cars -- one on Freedom Commerce Parkway and the second on Baymeadows Way -- put a gun to their heads and demanded their purses. Both women complied, which police said is the best thing they could have done.
"In this case, there was a weapon shown. That means that that person had the ability to use that weapon if you didn't comply," said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson. "You don't want to take that chance." Most purse snatchings occur suddenly, the thief not armed but counting on the element of surprise. "It was probably like five seconds and my purse was gone," said Marilyn Henry, who said she can sympathize with the most recent victims. Police urge women to keep their purse close. "I feel pretty secure," Lisa Sciortino told Channel 4's Ashley Townsend. "I either keep my hand on it or sling it across my shoulder." "I normally keep it tight right up next to me using my hand on it, so if someone did approach me, or come out of nowhere, they wouldn't easily take it," said Aldrri Hall. Police also advise people to scope things out before getting out of their car. "If you roll up on someone that appears to be out of place -- acting suspicious, of looking suspicious -- follow you gut instinct," Jefferson said. Jefferson also said criminals count on people being creatures of habit, following the same routine every day. "If you've got a favorite parking spot and it's a favorite parking spot for no other reason, switch it up sometime," Jefferson said. "Someone may be watching you." Henry said she lives her life differently after having her purse stolen. "You always learn after the fact, after something has happened," Henry said. "So I'm always aware and always checking, because I have been victimized."
