Khemlani directors to face court for alleged electricity theft

The trial of two senior directors of the Khemlani Mart group is to begin on June 13.

Karishma and Suresh Khemlani are accused of abstracting electricity from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) after it was found that one of their stores was illegally connected to JPS's light and power network.

The electricity was reportedly estimated at $13 million.

When they appeared in the Corporate area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday, RM Glen Brown was told the prosecution was not ready.

The court heard that on March 12 last year, JPS technicians went to the Tropical Plaza, St Andrew, where they reportedly discovered illegal connections.

The JPS reported there was no metering device attached to the electrical wires which supplied power to the store.

The court also heard that when the technicians made checks with their head office, they were informed that there was no contract to supply electricity to the store.
