Parent on assault rap will know fate March 14

Nadine Kelly, the parent accused of assaulting a teacher at the Kingston Technical High School, will know her fate on March 14.

Kelly is on assault charges after being accused of using a chair to beat the teacher who had reportedly scolded her 13-year-old daughter. When Kelly first appeared in Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, RM Glen Brown requested a probation report.

That report revealed that Kelly was previously convicted for unlawful wounding and given a one-year suspended sentence. RM Brown told Kelly he realised she was "a person with a tendency to be violent." She, however, told the court, "I did not beat her but I know I was wrong."

Undergoing therapy

The complainant reported that Kelly came into her classroom, asked her if she was the mother of the child and used a chair to hit her several times. She said she suffered injuries to her feet, hands and shoulder and has been undergoing therapy since. She has not returned to school since the incident.

Kelly repeatedly told the court she was sorry and that she was not a violent person. RM Brown decided to postpone Kelly's sentencing, telling the court, "What message do I send to the rest of Jamaica? That it is ok for parents to go to school and chastise teachers? This is happening in almost every school and we need to out a stop to it."

Kelly was ordered to pay the complainant $100,000 in compensation and is to return to court in two weeks' time to hear her sentence.
