Dear counsellor:I had a bad experience recently and I must admit that it is carelessness on my part. Two weeks ago, I visited a nightclub and I took a lap dance from one of the girls. I was also drinking heavily. I ended up having sexual intercourse with this girl. I did not use a condom and I know my behaviour was wrong. I'm now very worried that I may be infected with AIDS. I heard that the girl is a drug addict and this causes me to worry more because I heard that people who do drugs are at higher risk for contracting AIDS. Counsellor, I would like to know if there is a connection between drugs and AIDS. Careless Sport Dear Careless Sport: Yes, indeed there is a connection between drugs and HIV the virus that causes AIDS. Studies have shown that there is a high percentage of HIV the virus that causes AIDS among people who use drugs. This is because: Your sense of reasoning diminishes when you are under the influence of drugs. You might engage in sexual activities, which you might not have done if you were not under the influence of drugs. Sex is one means by which HIV is transmitted. People who become addicted to drugs sometimes sell their bodies/exchange sex in return for money to satisfy their craving for drugs. Using contaminated needles that are used by addicts to inject drugs into their bodies also transmit HIV.
