Karen Henry and Nandi Levy, two G.C. Foster College students are the first recipients of bursaries of $35,000 each from the Jamaica Women in Sport Society (JWISS). The presentation was made to the ladies on Wednesday.
Henry and Levy were selected on the basis of the overall contribution to sport development at the college while maintaining good academic and disciplinary records.
Levy is currently in the second year of a three-year programme. She focuses on netball and volleyball while her colleague Henry is a final-year certificate student with emphasis on netball.
Levy credits her award to her commitment to volunteerism and was very grateful for the award.
Yvonne Kong, principal of the institution, who is also a member of the advisory team, said G.C. Foster appreciated the gesture to the students. She insisted that the award should be used for personal development.

Caymanas Track Limited executive, Millicent Lynch, a member of the advisory team, was also on hand, and she made the presentations to the ladies. They also received a token from Cooyah.
JWISS hosted a charity last December and funds from the 'Charity Spin Off' were used to fund the bursaries. The organisation raised $150,000 from that event.
JWISS is now planning its second event, Career Options for Women in Sport Seminar, scheduled for May 2008.
Along with Lynch and Kong, the other members of the advisory team are Jacqueline Walter, Oberon Pitterson, Suzette Arnold, Stephen Bell and Carole Beckford who is the founder and executive director.
JWISS is aimed at improving opportunities for women in sport and physical education. The team is committed to promoting and increasing opportunities and roles for women at all levels. The team campaigns for changes in the approach to how information, education, research and training is viewed. They are also seeking increased opportunities for women in sport.
