Tuesday, 12 February 2008 The police are reporting an increase in the number of illegal firearms seized.
Head of the Major Investigation Taskforce Assistant Commissioner Les Green, says more than 70 guns have been taken off the streets since January 1.
ACP Green says this is higher than the figure reported during the corresponding period last year.
"In relation to recovered firearms there have been 73 seized so far compared to 64 last year so we have seen an increase there, in relation to the seizure of firearms by the security forces," said ACP Green.
According to police statistics, an average 500 illegal firearms are seized annually.
And two women and a man have been detained in connection with the seizure of an illegal firearm in Gordon Town, St. Andrew.
They were held at a house in Cottage Hill where a .38 revolver was discovered.
About 4.30 Monday afternoon, the police carried out an operation in the community.
A house occupied by the three was searched and the gun allegedly found.
The police say a man who was inside the house managed to elude them.
