*-* Bad Fruta recall*-*

Consumers who may have purchased the 250 ml size 'Fruta' orange juice bearing the expiry date of May 2, 2008 should return the product immediately, warns the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC). THE STAR was informed that the product was recently recalled by Jamaica Beverages Limited after some irregularities were discovered. After checks with CAC, communication specialist Dorothy Campbell confirmed that the product in question was reportedly ordered to be removed from shelves some two weeks ago. Though that size product is not as popular as those sold in tetra packs and cans, customers who might have bought the product are urged to be careful. "I was informed that two weeks ago steps were taken to recall the product because it was noticed that the product was breaking down," Ms. Campbell said. In explaining the term 'breaking down', Ms. Campbell said that she had heard that there was some discolouration of the product, among other factors. THE STAR was also informed that Jamaica Beverages Limited had embarked on an islandwide operation to collect the product which had already been distributed. According to Ms. Campbell, the CAC sought to ensure that the proper procedure was done during the operation. She went on to add that it was reported that all bottles of the commodity which were collected were destroyed, under supervision. "All bottles were destroyed, they cut each bottle under proper supervision," she said. As such, Ms. Campbell is urging all customers to return the commodity immediately to the location where it was purchased, as measures have been put in place for a refund. "We advise all customers who bought the product to return it to the point of sale and get their money back. Should there be any problems call the CAC," she said. Efforts to contact Paul Shoucair, general manager at Jamaica Beverages Limited were unsuccessful as the number provided went unanswered. A similar situation also occurred in Barbados, THE STAR learnt. A report which was seen on a website (Caribbean360.com), summarised that the product was also recalled by that country's ministry of health. According to the report: "Recent investigations by the ministry had revealed that some of the drinks were contaminated with candida or klebsiella organisms and are therefore considered to be unwholesome." Officials at the local Ministry of Health say they will also be investigating the matter of the recall.
