Thousands of pounds worth of possessions, including a car, were taken during the first raid at the house in Gladstone Road, Spencer, during the early hours of last Thursday.
David Burry realised he had been burgled when he got up for work at 3.45am. And then the intruders came back at 5.10am as the 37-year-old was giving a statement to officers, but fled when they realised Mr Burry was awake and the police were there.
Mr Burry, a coach driver, said his wife Lisa, 31, and sons Levi, seven, and Lewis, 10, had been left shaken.
He said: "The boys are devastated, trying to get them to sleep at night is really hard because they are scared. They know someone has been in the house while we were all asleep.
"It's got to the point where my wife wants to move and so do I to be honest. We have lived here for 10 years and nothing like this has ever happened."
Mr Burry's Vauxhall Vectra was taken along with the children's Nintendo Wii games console and five games bought for them for Christmas.
A laptop, jewellery, mobile phones and Mrs Burry's purse, including bank cards, were also stolen as well as her van keys, but not the van.
Mr Burry said he knew something was wrong when he went downstairs and a few internal doors were open and the lights were on.
He called the police and while he was speaking to officers Mr Burry said his wife heard someone at the front door.
Mr Burry went to the door and he said the intruders ran away when they saw him.
A spokesman for Northamptonshire Police said: "We can confirm we attended the address to investigate a burglary and subsequently arrested a 15-year-old local youth."
