The more than 100 students from the Smart Kids Basic School in Passagefort, had to be sent home as thieves broke into the school on Monday night and stole several items.
According to principal Karen Hurst, when the school was supposed to start on Tuesday, it was observed that a massive hole has been cut in the roof through which the culprits gained entrance and stole several items which resulted in school not being held.
"After they cut the roof and entered, they stole the soap that the children use to wash their hands, toilet tissue, left-over ice-cream, three CD players that we use to teach the children," she said.
She said that it is really bad that persons would want to deprive several poor children of the opportunity to learn. Ms. Hurst also added that the thieves damaged a refrigerator at the institution which will set the operations of school back significantly.
When The Star visited the location, several teachers and students were seen busily trying to clean out the area which had been ransacked by the culprits. They said it will take a tremendous effort to bring the school back.
