Anybody can win and everybody has an equal opportunity to 'buss'.
Saturday January 5 will see the beginning of a new chapter in the history of dancehall music in Jamaica when the much touted and highly anticipated Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall will premiere at 9:00pm on TVJ. The competition will feature a bevy of talented princes and princesses vying for the title, Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall.
Dancehall music's popularity transcends the shores of Jamaica and the Caribbean and has, since the eighties, been able to conquer new markets such and the United States and Europe. The popularity of dancehall music has been further reinforced by the success of contemporary acts such as Sean Paul, Beenie Man and Baby Cham who all followed on the groundbreaking success of Shabba Ranks and Buju Banton.
Whilst the success of dancehall has been commendable, there is still need for further growth in the Genre. It is also clear that aspiring deejay's and singjays have great difficulty in finding avenues to expose their talent and capabilities. It is based on these factors that Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall was created.
"This show is important because it will unearth and showcase indigenous new talent. Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is a dancehall extravaganza that presents a good opportunity to anyone, male or female, who think they can deejay or sinjay to 'buss out' onto the music scene" - Mark Kenny, Executive Producer
Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall will run from Saturday the 5th of January to Saturday, April 12, 2008 on TVJ. The first leg of the competition which runs from Saturday January 5 to Saturday February 2 will feature auditions from 5 towns: Savanna-la-Mar, Mandeville, Ocho Rios, Portmore and Kingston with the public getting the opportunity to choose the top prince and princess for each week. The voting lines will open on the Saturday night of the show and close on the Friday evening of the following week. The public will be able to vote either by voice or text at the cost of J$20 from any phone on all networks.
Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall is a new and different kind of competition because it encompasses all major aspects of dancehall culture. The competition will highlight the history, culture and nature of the Genre.
"We want to showcase all aspects of dancehall, we want to show that it is not only about music and being on stage but it's also a movement and a lifestyle that uses fashion, comedy and dance to set itself apart from other forms of musical expression" - Natalie Parboosingh, Promoter.
In many ways Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall will be a big step forward for the music: never before has there been a competition dedicated to unearthing new talent while giving them the opportunity to emerge as Kings & Queens of the Dancehall. Unlike any other competition there will be equal opportunity provided on the stage to both male and female contestants. At the end of the show there will be two winners: one King and one Queen, another first for Jamaica.
On Saturday January 5 Jamaica will be able to begin choosing who they think are the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall. Anybody can win and everybody has an equal opportunity to 'buss'.
