The self-proclaimed greatest of all time LL Cool J spoke recently about the quality of his music in recent years, among other topics. On his body of work: "Have I ever made a garbage album? Yes. But you know what, when you make 13 albums, it's pretty hard not to make a couple....3, 4, 5... pieces of shit! If it's not, who else is doin' it? It's pretty hard not to make some bullshit. If it's 10 records an album, that's 130 records released to the public...it's pretty hard not to make some garbage in there. You can't make any shot."
On Jay-Z and Def Jam: "All I want them to do is promote my records. I'm not interested at going at nobody. If I could double Jay-Z's success right now and snap my fingers, why not? I could care less, because you know why? Like my grandmother said, what he eat don't make me shit...one way or another, if he does well, he ain't gonna call me up and give me a steak, and if he doesn't do well, he ain't gonna call me and ask me for a steak."
On his upcoming album and level of effort: "The album is serious; it's called Exit 13. I remember where I came from, and basically what I'm doing is taking it back to my roots. You know, back to the cats in the barbershop for that one guy who's been arguing about me for years...what people don't know is that sometimes when I make albums I just coast, and I'm just being creative and artistic...everything you hear me say on the mic is not always me trying to be the best emcee. People think that everything that comes out of your mouth is your most potent lyrical effort."
