The City Centre police are now hunting for a man who they believe stole a street light to sell as scrap metal.
According to police reports, while they were on patrol on Orange Street in downtown Kingston at 1 a.m. Tuesday, they saw a man walking down the road with a street light. He was chased down the road but he managed to escape leaving behind the street light.
Recently Karl Samuda, Minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce suspended the trade of scrap metal following the high number of scrap metals products that were stolen from companies and government entities for sale in the industry.
The trade of the commodity was, however, restored after the ministry established the Scrap Metal Regulations 2007, to monitor and regulate the trade.
Provisions under the regulations include fines and penalties for breaches; the licensing of legitimate traders and the introduction of inspectors to monitor the transporting of scrap metal.
