Former Head of the Crime Management Unit (CMU) Senior Superintendent Reneto Adams is among several senior police officers who have applied to fill the post of Police Commissioner.
SSP Adams submitted his application to the Police Service Commission on Wednesday.
SSP Adams, who was placed behind a desk following his arrest in 2004 in the high profile Kraal murder case, confirmed to RJR News that he has applied.
The controversial crime-fighter said he decided to apply because he possesses the requisite skills to lead the men and women of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
He argued that the crack down on corruption and indiscipline within the force would be high on his agenda if he is appointed Commissioner.
In the meantime, sources say some 15 senior officers have applied to the fill the post since the Service Commission advertised the position.
Sources say retired JDF Chief, Hardley Lewin is being strongly pursued by the authorities to fill the position.
The Service Commission began its search for a new Police Commissioner after Lucius Thomas announced his retirement earlier this month.
The selection process has been embroiled in controversy after the Police Officers Association warned that it will take the matter to court if an outsider is appointed to the post.
