Shottas Demand Young Girls - Parents ordered to take teens to dons for sex
So called 'dons' and 'shottas' from several inner-city communities are ordering that some parents deliver their barely legal daughters to them for sexual favours, THE STAR has discovered.
THE STAR understands that the men want the girls as soon as they reach 16 years old, as it is the age of consent for sexual activity in Jamaica.
"Bway a dem a run di place eno, di man dem seh dem nah go prison fi deh wid likkle pickney, so dem jus sen message to di girl dem madda an mek she know seh wen har dawta turn 16 dem ago want har," one resident of a West Kingston community told THE STAR.
When THE STAR visited the community recently, the seemingly sexually starved men could be heard uttering sexual advances to various young girls, some of which were on their way to and from school and seemed not be more than 15 years old.
When approached, one of the girl's who identified herself as Cathy, a 15-year-old student of a high school in Kingston, said that it was a daily routine for the men to do so, and while she feels uncomfortable at times, she has become quite accustomed to it.
"A everyday ting, so mi kinda get use to it now, but mi still wonda if dem ago try nuttin," she said. Cathy, however, admitted that while the men tell her of their sexual desires for her, they have not sent an order to her mother.
However, two ladies from West Kingston commented that their younger sister had to flee the community under disguise after the 'big man' ordered that she be sent to him whenever he is ready.
"When she turned 16, we kept a party for her and we invited everyone including him (the big man) and his crew ... about three to four months after the party, he saw us and out of nowhere just started demanding that we send our sister to him whenever he's ready," the female recalled.
"We had to tell them that her relatives abroad were filing for her and the papers came through," she added.
Sex predators
The ladies further claimed that they had to send their sister elsewhere as a means of escaping the grasp of the sex predators who from time to time have reminded them of the incident with statements such as "she escape, unu suppose to glad."
It was a similar scenario in another community in Spanish Town, St. Catherine. Men from the community, while having their regular 'link-up' could be heard making sexual advances to young females who were passing by.
"Jah know, da gal deh a get fat eno," one man said. "She young still eno, gi har two more year," another said.
"Nobada gwaan like unu waan rush har eno, a my own dat, me a gwaan groom har, 'til she reach 16," a next man added.
THE STAR learnt that the men usually choose girl's of needy families and often use the offer of money or meals to coax families.
According to men from both communities, while their 'orders' are usually questioned at first by parents, they are usually afterwards met.
"Yeah most likely dem ago itch at first, but dem done know seh a suh di ting set up ... from we seh 'errrr', dem jus affi do it," one man said. "Put it da way ya, dem need help eno, so we jus help dem out ... money, food, clothes, tings like dat, plus di girl dem nuh mine 'cause dem done know seh a we a di real mckoy, wi nuh baby boy."
Despite the beliefs of the men, young females with whom THE STAR spoke expressed deep fear of the fact that they could be the next victim.
"Mi see and hear seh it happen to some oda girl roun here, suh mi affi a wonda if a me nex cause me soon reach di age," one youngster said.
While residents condemn the men's actions, there is very little that they can do or say. Residents claim that voicing an opinion against the men could only prove detrimental.
"Wi nuh rate it at all, but we cyaa really do or say nuttin...unless wi ago runway afterwards," one resident said.
Families that were pointed out by residents to be victims or soon to be victims of the disturbing incidents, chose to remain tight-lipped on the matter.
One individual Kentonadmitted to THE STAR that he was once a messenger of the 'shottas' now claims he totally regrets being a part of such an activity and hopes that the trend will be one that is very short-lived.
"Mi nuh proud but me a tell yu straight, me use to deliver message fi di don more time, an all me use to sen message to...fi tell yu the truth afta my dawta born mi look pon it an seh mi nuh want a guy try dat wid my dawta, suh mi jus stop. Me a try show di res a di man dem seh dem fi easy offa dem flex deh but dem nuh care," Kenton said.
An officer at the Centre for investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) told THE STAR that reports of such a nature are new to them. "No, we have never heard such reports," the officer said.
But Superintendent Delroy Hewitt, head of the Kingston Western Division told THE STAR otherwise.
"We have heard of it, we have heard of one or two situations," Supt. Hewitt said, adding that there have not been substantial reports. Hewitt also pointed out that the 'ordering' of girls is not limited to those who are 16.
"We've heard of not only 17, even 17, 18, 19, even as young as 13 and 14," he revealed.
