The mother of an eight-year-old boy who died recently is alleging that her son was 'kicked to death' by boys at his school.

Vinetta Patrick, the mother of Tyreake 'Tray' Currie, says her son was admitted for over a week in hospital after he was kicked several times by older boys of his school, Holy Rosary Primary in East Kingston, as he waited for his father to collect him.

"After Tray came in from school he started vomiting in the evening. He felt well enough to go to school the next day but when his father went to pick him up the teacher told him that Tray was sick ," Ms. Patrick told THE STAR.

Tyreake's father, Terrence Currie, who had taken Tyreake to May Pen eventually had to take him to the May Pen Hospital where he was admitted and later transferred to the Bustamante Children's Hospital where he died. Ms. Patrick said that Tyreake told doctors in her presence that he had been kicked by a group of fifth and sixth grade boys of the school after refusing to play "salad a kick" the same evening he was waiting on his father.

"I went to the school on the Friday and the teachers said they didn't know of anything and that I should keep them posted. Until now, look how long 'Tray' in the hospital til him gone and nobody from the school don't come look fi him at the hospital or call mi," Ms. Patrick said.

Ms. Patrick said that her son had broken his arm after another student pushed him in November of last year but that she had tried in vain to find a different school for Tyreake to attend this year, "Him tell him grandmother that he didn't want to go back to that school because them too abusive, now dem tek weh mi son. Tray suh quiet, and dem tek him weh," she lamented.

Upon Tray's passing last Wednesday, Ms. Patrick said that the doctors had informed her that her son's death was possibly due to "trauma of the pancreas", which she believes could possibly have been an extension of the injuries he had received from the kicks.

The Rollington Town police who are investigating say they are yet to establish the mother's claim that the child was kicked at school. "We have received a report but we have nothing so far to support the claim," the investigating officer told THE STAR.

He added that the teacher at the school said no student had reported the incident to her and also that although the incident occurred on May 21, the teacher said she did not receive any information about the incident until May 28. The post-mortem is to be conducted on June 19. Efforts to get any comments from the Holy Rosary Primary School were unsuccessful as we were told that the principal was in a meeting and messages left by the news team were not returned.
