For the massive crowd that turned out for Spectrum 2K7, held at the University of the West Indies (Mona) Students' Union, last Friday evening, there were many high points, but the event was not without a few disappointing moments.
The vibes really got on the way around 1 a.m when host for the night, Spragga Benz, was introduced. When the veteran deejay stepped up on stage, UWI erupted with screams and cheers as Spragga performed a few hits of old, declaring, Wi Nuh Like and If A Gun Ting.
Other Red Square artistes, like Greg Hinds, also joined in on the action, and they delivered a few rounds of lyrical artillery before making way for Chino.
Chino managed to maintain the attention of patrons even though his partner Delly Ranx was not present to assist in performing their hit single Red Bull And Guinness. Chino then invited Sultex 3000 who taught 'The Killa Walk An Di Prezi Bounce' and another artiste from their camp, Kari Jess.
After a few more young acts attempted to win favour with the crowd, it was Ras Myrhdak who grabbed another big forward with his Blazer.
The 'hotta fire' was kept ablaze by the likes of Teflon and Turbulence who took the stage to deafening screams from the audience, while Einstein came to Rise Di Machine and Etana finding favour with the Wrong Address.
A break in the live stage performances made way for selectors and DJ Sunshine was a hit with a few boos and at least one bottle tossed her way when patrons felt that she had been playing too much Beenie Man tunes.
"Which py a boo mi in yah, which by hole a boo mi in yah?"
After a missile was thrown a her, DJ Sunshine exited the stage and even after host Spragga managed to restore calm, DJ Sunshine refused to continue, commenting, "dem disrespect mi".
No wuk
After the likes of Swatch International continued the musical vibes, live performances restarted with Alaine, who took the stage at 2:30 a.m. singing You Make Me Weak. After delivering a medley of her recent hit songs, Vegas took over, doing a mix of old and new tunes, among them Taxi Fare and Hot Wuk, to which he attempted to dance with a man's girlfriend in the audience.
At 3 a.m., it was time for the prime acts such as Sizzla Kalonji, who blazed the stage, performing a mixture of old and new. Sizzla, clearly in the mood to Pump Up Ar, declared, I'm With The Girls, so they should Come Fly With Me. And after he rounded off the girl segment with Haffi Get Di Nookie, he immediately went for his Big Long Guns.
Deejay Aidonia was up next at 3:20 a.m., but his Bagga Bagga Bagga and thoughts of Ukku were cut short when missiles were thrown at him, apparently because members in the audience disagreed with some of his lyrics about a certain other artiste. Aidonia left the stage abruptly, triggering a minor disruption in the audience, a few persons having to take cover behind the stage.
The selectors were called out to try and restore some calm in the meantime by playing some music, but it was not until the Warlord, Bounty Killer, was called out at 3:40 a.m., that the undivided attention of patrons was recaptured.
Bounty immediately got down to the musical business at hand, as he went 'ole skool' with Mystery is Di Mystery, Cellular Phone, War, Suspense, Eagle An Di Hawk and Cyan Believe Mi Eye.
Mavado later joined Killa on stage, adding to the hype with songs like Full Clip, Real MaCoy, How High among other tunes, before the two spat tunes simultaneously. Bounty saying, From Dem Dis, Mavado declaring, Ball Dem A Ball.
The two thrilled patrons for as long as was allowed, as the police came and declared that all good things must now come to an end.
Bounty was, of course, cross, angry and miserable at the interference of the police, as he left the stage cursing, "Police always a try disrespect di ting."
Again, another disruption took place in the audience, many rushing towards the exit, leaving Spragga over the microphone shouting, "uno do'n run, uno do'n run".
At 4:15, the ups and downs of Spectrum 2K7 and its roller coaster ground to a halt.
