A sugar molecule linked to the origin of life was discovered in a potentially habitable region of our galaxy.

The molecule, called glycolaldehyde, was spotted in a large star-forming area of space around 26,000 light-years from Earth in the less-chaotic outer regions of the Milky Way. This suggests the sugar could be common across the universe, which is good news for extraterrestrial-life seekers.

"This is an important discovery as it is the first time glycolaldehyde, a basic sugar, has been detected towards a star-forming region where planets that could potentially harbor life may exist," Serena Viti of University College London said in a press release.

Previously, glycolaldehyde had only been observed toward the center of the galaxy, where conditions are thought to be too extreme to host habitable planets.

Glycolaldehyde is a key ingredient for life. It helps to build Ribonucleic acid (RNA), which is thought to be the central molecule involved in the origin of life on Earth. Glycolaldehyde is a monosaccharide sugar, the basic unit of carbohydrates. It can react with the chemical propenal to form ribose, the building block of RNA.

"The discovery of an organic sugar molecule in a star forming region of space is very exciting and will provide incredibly useful information in our search for alien life, said Keith Mason, chief executive of the Englands Science and Technology Facilities Council...

Most People Believe Dreams Are Meaningful

Dreams might mean nothing, but many people take them seriously nonetheless, as Sigmund Freud did, new research finds.

People in at least three countries, including the United States, believe dreams contain important hidden truths, said researcher Carey Morewedge, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

In six different studies, Morewedge and his colleagues surveyed nearly 1,100 people about their dreams. The results are detailed in the February issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

"Psychologists' interpretations of the meaning of dreams vary widely," Morewedge said. "But our research shows that people believe their dreams provide meaningful insight into themselves and their world."

In one study that surveyed general beliefs about dreams, Morewedge and co-author Michael Norton, an assistant professor at Harvard Business School, surveyed 149 university students in the United States, India and South Korea. The researchers asked the students to rate different theories about dreams.

Across all three cultures, an overwhelming majority of the students endorsed the theory that dreams reveal hidden truths about themselves and the world, a belief also endorsed by a nationally representative sample of Americans, Morewedge said.

In another study, Morewedge and his colleagues wanted to explore how dreams might influence people's waking behavior. A total of 182 commuters at a Boston train station were asked to imagine that one of four possible scenarios had happened the night before a scheduled airline trip: The national threat level was raised to orange, indicating a high risk of terrorist attack; they consciously thought about their plane crashing; they dreamed about a plane crash; or a real plane crash occurred on the route they planned to take.

A dream of a plane crash was more likely to affect travel plans than either thinking about a crash or a government warning, and the dream of a plane crash produced a similar level of anxiety as did an actual crash, Morewedge found.

Mold and mildew are tiny plants that grow where its warm and damp like in the shower. They release invisible "spores" into the air. The floating spores trigger allergy and asthma episodes. And wherever they land, the spores start growing new mold and mildew.

Mold/mildew also grow on "wet" appliances like air conditioners, dehumidifiers (appliances that remove moisture from the air) and humidifiers (appliances that add moisture to the air). Follow manufacturers instructions to change filters and clean appliances regularly.

  2. Clean up food spills, crumbs and liquids on countertops and floors immediately.
  3. Empty trash daily. Clean and disinfect garbage cans and recycling bins weekly. Let the cans dry out before you put in a new garbage bag.
  4. Keep the cabinet under your sink dry and clean. Have leaks repaired.
  5. Clean the outside and inside of the refrigerator. If possible, vacuum underneath.
  6. Wash and dry dishes as soon as possible after eating.
  7. Wash floors at least weekly.
  • Keep food in closed containers.
  • Dont leave water sitting in open containers.
  • Cover any food (including pet food) that will be left out overnight.
  • Use baits or gel products to get rid of c**kroaches. Follow instructions on the product.
  • Seal any cracks around the walls or cabinets where c**kroaches can get in.
  • Throw away paper grocery bags. Roaches like to live in them.

Protect Your Vision



Most people would acknowledge that their eyesight is the most important sense. And, I would have to agree. Humans have natural features that help protect their eyes from damage. Our eyelashes are there to keep dirt particles out, our eyebrows keep sweat from running into our eyes, and blinking washes tears over our eyes to moisten them and keep them clean. Even though we have these natural features to protect our eyes, it is still not enough.

By remembering simple steps to protect your eyes, you can keep them from deteriorating. Only 40% of Americans go to the doctor for an annual eye exam. This is the first check to make sure your eyes are being taken care of well. Get to the optometrist and get your eyes checked atleast once per year.

Dont forget to bring your sunglasses especially when it is sunny outside. Sunglasses will sheild your eyes from ultraviolet light emitted by the sun. This will help prevent the formation of cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygium. Reflected light from the sun off substances such as water and snow can cause the surface of the eye to burn.

If you are an active athlete it is important to protect your vision on a constant basis. Usually eye guards on baseball, hockey and football helmets are optional but you should insist on using them. In sports like basketball, goggles are a great way to prevent eye damage. Too many serious sports-related eye injuries are caused yearly.

When using the computer for long periods of time, it is necessary to take intermittent breaks. It is generally recommended to take a break every 20 minutes to reduce the strain on your eyes.

When working with dangerous chemicals or substances, always wear safety goggles. If any material does make contact with your eyes, flush them immediately with water.

Think about it poor/damaged eye sight or even blindness is something that can help be prevented by being careful and taking neccessary steps to help ensure that you dont impair your vision.

Lymphatic filariasis currently affects 120 million people worldwide, and 40 million of these people have serious disease. When an infected female mosquito bites a person, she may inject the worm larvae, called microfilariae, into the *lo**. The microfilariae reproduce and spread throughout the *lo**stream, where they can live for many years. Often disease symptoms do not appear until years after infection. As the parasites accumulate in the *lo** vessels, they can restrict circulation and cause fluid to build up in surrounding tissues. Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS), or micropsia, is a disorienting neurological condition which affects human visual perception. Subjects perceive humans, parts of humans, animals, and inanimate objects as substantially smaller than in reality. Generally, the object perceived appears far away or extremely close at the same time. For example, a family pet, such as a dog, may appear the size of a mouse, or a normal car may look shrunk to scale. This leads to another name for the condition, Lilliput sight or Lilliputian hallucinations, named after the small people in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. The condition is in terms of perception only; the mechanics of the eye are not affected, only the brain's interpretation of information passed from the eyes.

Blaschko's lines are an extremely rare and unexplained phenomenon of human anatomy first presented in 1901 by German dermatologist Alfred Blaschko. Neither a specific disease nor a predictable symptom of a disease, Blaschko's lines are an invisible pattern built into human DNA. Many inherited and acquired diseases of the skin or mucosa manifest themselves according to these patterns, creating the visual appearance of stripes. The cause of the stripes is thought to result from mosaicism; they do not correspond to nervous, muscular, or lymphatic systems. What makes them more remarkable is that they correspond quite closely from patient to patient, usually forming a "V" shape over the spine and "S" shapes over the chest, stomach, and sides.








Walking Corpse Syndrome: they believe to have died

It is a syndrome of mental depression and suicidal tendencies, in which the patient complains of having lost everything: possessions, part of or entire body, often believing that he or she has died and is a walking corpse. This delusion is usually expanded to the degree that the patient might claim that he can smell his own rotting flesh and feel worms crawling through his skin. The latter phenomenon is a recurring experience of people chronically deprived of sleep or suffering amphetamine/cocaine psychosis. Paradoxically, being "dead" often gives the patient the nation of being immortal.

Jumping frenchman disorder: weird reflexes
 



The main characteristic is that patients are extremely startled by an unexpected noise or sight. It's not just twitching when someone sneaks up behind you. Patients with this disorder flail their arms, cry out and repeat words. First identified in some of Maine's lumberjacks of French-Canadian origin, the odd reflex has been identified in other parts of the world, too.

God fulfills his plan

As we read of God's faithfulness fulfilled in the events described in 1 Kings 8, these words of Solomon spring forth from our hearts as well: "Praise the Lord who has given rest to his people Israel, as he promised!" When the ark of the covenant came to rest in its place between the wings of the cherubim, signifying the completion of the temple in which God would dwell, "a cloud filled the Temple of the Lord" (v. 10). God's presence was so glorious that the priests couldn't continue their work but could only bow before him in worship. It was as if God was saying, "It is done. The temple I planned has been built. And I am here to dwell with you!" Thus Solomon was able to make the requests that followed: "May he never forsake us. May he give us the desire to do his will." He could make these requests with such heartfelt fervor because of his trust in the covenant-keeping God who fulfills his purposes. If we truly grasp the majesty of what God did during Solomon's reign, we can thank him in faith that he will fulfill his purposes in our lives as well.

The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.

The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied marijuana for 30 years.

"We hypothesized that there would be a positive association between marijuana use and lung cancer, and that the association would be more positive with heavier use," he said. "What we found instead was no association at all, and even a suggestion of some protective effect."

Federal health and drug enforcement officials have widely used Tashkin's previous work on marijuana to make the case that the drug is dangerous. Tashkin said that while he still believes marijuana is potentially harmful, its cancer-causing effects appear to be of less concern than previously thought.

Earlier work established that marijuana does contain cancer-causing chemicals as potentially harmful as those in tobacco, he said. However, marijuana also contains the chemical THC, which he said may kill aging cells and keep them from becoming cancerous.

Tashkin's study, funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse, involved 1,200 people in Los Angeles who had lung, neck or head cancer and an additional 1,040 people without cancer matched by age, sex and neighborhood.

They were all asked about their lifetime use of marijuana, tobacco and alcohol. The heaviest marijuana smokers had lighted up more than 22,000 times, while moderately heavy usage was defined as smoking 11,000 to 22,000 marijuana cigarettes. Tashkin found that even the very heavy marijuana smokers showed no increased incidence of the three cancers studied.

"This is the largest case-control study ever done, and everyone had to fill out a very extensive questionnaire about marijuana use," he said. "Bias can creep into any research, but we controlled for as many confounding factors as we could, and so I believe these results have real meaning."

Tashkin's group at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA had hypothesized that marijuana would raise the risk of cancer on the basis of earlier small human studies, lab studies of animals, and the fact that marijuana users inhale more deeply and generally hold smoke in their lungs longer than tobacco smokers -- exposing them to the dangerous chemicals for a longer time. In addition, Tashkin said, previous studies found that marijuana tar has 50 percent higher concentrations of chemicals linked to cancer than tobacco cigarette tar.

While no association between marijuana smoking and cancer was found, the study findings, presented to the American Thoracic Society International Conference this week, did find a 20-fold increase in lung cancer among people who smoked two or more packs of cigarettes a day.

The study was limited to people younger than 60 because those older than that were generally not exposed to marijuana in their youth, when it is most often tried.

Who YOU Are Does Make A Difference

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in High

School by telling them the difference each of them had made. She called

each student to the front of the class, one at a time. First, she told

each of them how they had made a difference to her, and the class. Then

she presented each of them with a blue ribbon, imprinted with gold

letters, which read, "Who I Am Makes a Difference"


Afterwards, the teacher decided to do a class project, to see what kind

of impact recognition would have on a Community. She gave each of the

students three more blue ribbons, and instructed them to go out and

spread this acknowledgment ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the

results, see who honored whom, and report to the class in about a week.


One of the boys in the class went to a junior executive in a nearby

company, and honored him for helping him with his career planning. He

gave him a blue ribbon, and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two

extra ribbons and said, "We're doing aclass project on recognition, and

we'd like for you to go out, find somebody to honor, give them a blue

ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a

third person, to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please

report back to me and tell me what happened."


Later that day, the junior executive went in to see his boss, who had

been noted, by the way, as being kind of a grouchy fellow. He sat his

boss down, and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a

creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The junior executive

asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon, and would he

give him permission to put it on him His surprised boss said, "Well,

sure." The junior executive took the blue ribbon and placed it right on

his boss's jacket, above his heart. As he gave him the last extra

ribbon, he said, "Would you take this extra ribbon, and pass it on by

honoring somebody else. The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is

doing a project in school, and we want to keep this recognition

ceremony going and find out how it affects people."

That night, the boss came home to his 14-year-old son, and sat him

down. He said, "The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was

in my office, and one of the junior executives came in and told me he

admired me, and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius.

Imagine! He thinks I am a creative genius! Then he put a blue ribbon

that says, "Who I Am Makes a Difference", on my jacket above my heart.

He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honor.

As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would

honor with this ribbon, and I thought about you. I want to honor you.

My days are hectic and when I come home, I do not pay a lot of

attention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good enough

grades in school, and for your bedroom being a mess.

Somehow, tonight, I just wanted to sit here and, well, just let you

know that you do make a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are

the most important person in my life. You're A great kid, and I love

you!" The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he could not stop

crying. His whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said

through his tears, "Dad, earlier tonight I sat in my room and wrote a

letter to you and Mom, explaining why I had took my life, and I asked

you to forgive me. I was going to commit suicide tonight after you were

asleep. I just did not think that you cared at all. The letter is

upstairs. I don't think I need it after all." His father walked

upstairs and found a heartfelt letter full of anguish and pain.


The boss went back to work a changed man. He was no longer a grouch,

but made sure to let all of his employees know that they made a

difference. The junior executive helped several other young people

with career planning, and never forgot to let them know that they made

a difference in his life...one being the boss' son. In addition, the

young boy and his classmates learned a valuable lesson, "Who you are

DOES make a difference"


You are under no obligation to pass this on to anyone... not to two

people, or to two hundred. As far as I am concerned, you can forget it

and move on. On the other hand, if you want, you could send it to all

of the people who mean something to you, or send it to the one, two, or

three people who mean the most. On the other hand, just smile and know

that I think that you are important, or you would not have received

this in the first place. Who you are does make a difference, and I

wanted you to know that.

However it appears as if many sound system disc jockeys are adding fuel to an ever brewing fire of lyrical wars, that are commonly unleashed by disgruntled Dancehall DJs who make no hesitation to clearly speak their minds in song.

While reggae and dancehall have been famous for showcasing important messages to the world, bringing personal and sometimes intimate issues and details to an audience that only wants basic entertainment can get to be excessive not to mention, monotonous.

Is it a ploy to win sympathizers and in so doing form separate warring factions? Answers to this question eludes all forward thinking dancehall partakers, who feel lyrical war indulgence only serves to promote division and even further ignite c****ative situations.

When dancehall fans enter their party of choice, it is not because they want to cheer on or take sides in some DJs personal problems. And so the sound system selectors need to ease up off of the nonsense and stop playing the rival tunes back to back, because that kind of selecting spurs on animosity and sometimes violence follows.

As opposed to the song that says, "Push wood in the fire jockey," regardless of how you interpret it, our disc jockeys need to change their way of approaching the lyrical wars and maybe, p"our water on the fire," instead.

These violations of trust will kill any relationship

Finding the one to share a relationship with is a blessing. Once you've bonded with this special someone, keep in mind that respecting your partner's privacy and retaining trust are essential to maintaining a healthy relationship. If you cross certain behavioral boundaries that violate your partner's trust, you may cause irreparable damage to your relationship.
As a dating coach, I'm not usually a fan of hard and fast "rules" for relationships. I've, nevertheless, identified widespread behaviors which will likely end any relationship. So to help you ensure that you don't breach the "trust" boundary in your relationship, here are six detrimental dating behaviors that should always be avoided:

1. Prying into private info.
If you suspect your partner of betrayal, does that give you the right to start reading your partner's email? To listen to his/her voicemail messages? To hack into his/her online profile? The answer to all of these is "no!"

You should never dig through your partner's personal emails or listen to your partner's voicemail messages.

2. Lying for the greater good. Lying is never good in a relationship, although we've probably all been guilty of doing it. Lying to your partner in an effort to avoid hurting him/her or to avoid confrontation may seem like a wise decision. Regrettably, you will end up digging a deeper hole for yourself when that lie is exposed, which is almost always inevitable. When caught in this situation, you end up hurting your partner anyway, and whatever you were trying to protect your partner from -- by lying to them -- will be even worse because of your deception. I recommend honestly communicating with your partner from the get-go.

3. Pulling a "James Bond."
You should never snoop in your partner's private things (drawers, wallet, filing cabinet, or private records -- such as bank or credit card statements). Furthermore, nothing justifies snooping. No matter what you have a "hunch" about, snooping through your partner's things should never be pursued to confirm or deny your hunch. Your partner's possessions and personal records should be kept private unless he/she gives you permission to look at them. Spying on your partner is one of the most blatant violations of your partner's trust and will achieve nothing except having your partner never trust you to be alone near his/her things ever again.
4. Designating yourself "Magnum P.I." Another ill-advised way some people try to verify suspected bad behavior by their partner is to take on the role of private investigator by attempting to "catch their partner in the act" of doing something. Whether this takes the form of searching for your partner's car by driving by his/her house, work, or gym or it takes the form of following your partner in your car, this is something you should never do. Even if you have a convincing hunch that your partner is hiding something from you, stalking is the wrong way to address it. If your partner finds out you've been "tailing him/her" in your car, he/she will no longer trust you.

5. Sending others to do your dirty work.
Don't ever send a friend or anyone else to gather information for you about your partner or to spy on your partner for you. This means, don't send a friend to go hang out where you know or suspect your partner will be. Don't have your friend try to eavesdrop on your partner's conversations in places he/she goes. Don't ask your friends to use their cell phone to snap covert pictures of your partner. All of these favors from friends not only violate your partner's trust, but also reveal your total lack of trust in your partner.

6. Checking up constantly.
One of the biggest ways to reveal that you don't trust your partner is to manifest that distrust with paranoid and obsessive behavior. While calling your partner regularly is quite normal, calling him/her incessantly to "check up" comes off as obsessive and will drive your partner away. If, for example, your partner is unable to answer his/her phone for a few hours and by the time he/she accesses it he/she discovers you've called 50 times, you not only come off as being paranoid and obsessive, but you clearly communicate to your partner that you distrust him/her. Also, when you panic every time 10 minutes go by without a reply from your partner by a phone call or an email, it sends the exact same message.
So even if you have some type of "intuition" that your partner is hiding something from you, it's better to engage in a confrontation with him/her openly rather than searching for answers secretly. Even if your partner doesn't respond to your attempts to talk about it the first, second, or third time, chances are that you'll eventually discuss it -- and the outcome of voicing your suspicions honestly with your partner will always be better than if your partner discovers you engaged in any of the behaviors I've talked about.

Dr. Roy L. Laurin tells of a Christian businessman who was traveling in Korea. In a field by the side of the road was a young man pulling a crude plow while an old man held the handles. Spending time with fat friends means you are more likely to become fat yourself, according to research.

Humans are subconsciously influenced by the weight of those around them, which could lead to rising obesity levels in the next decade, the study found.

Europeans decide if they are overweight by comparisons with those around them, rather than by the Body Mass Index.

If their peers are overweight, they are likely to see it as normal and become fatter themselves.

Graduates, however, are more likely to feel overweight than someone of the same weight with little or no educational qualifications.

The researchers collected and analysed data from 27,000 European adults across 29 countries and found less than a third of men thought that they were overweight.

Professor Andrew Oswald, from the University of Warwick, said: 'Human beings compare themselves among their localised peer group even if they are not conscious of it.'

If fatness levels increase and 'we all start copying each other we will end up with quite serious health problems', he added.

'Rising obesity needs to be thought of as a sociological phenomenon, not a physiological one.'

Never discuss your problems with someone incapable of contributing to the solution,
because those who never succeed themselves are always first to tell you how too.
Not everyone has a right to speak into your life.
You are certain to get the worst of the bargain when you exchange ideas with the wrong person.
Don't follow anyone who's not going anywhere.

For example, if you focus on your favorite food, if you start thinking about it early in the morning, and all throughout the day, chances are, by the end of the day youll be eating it! What you give your attention to, you will desire. In the same way, the more you give your attention to God and His Word, the more you will hunger for Him. Just like the scripture promises, when you hunger for righteousness, you will be completely satisfied. The world offers so many things for you to give your attention to, but they arent things that will satisfy. You might think you want a particular car, or certain clothes, or live in a particular neighborhood. Theres nothing wrong with those things, but understand that things wont ever satisfy you. Recognize that only God will satisfy you. As you hunger for Him, youll live in peace and blessing and live completely satisfied all the days of your life!

Whole grains What they do: These are full of vitamins of the B group; these vitamins are essential for normal skin functioning, growth of new cells to replace dead ones and to maintain the skin's strength against infections and stress. Niacin in whole grains also helps skin cells to absorb nutrients from the *lo** and break them to release energy. How to consume: Select breads, biscuits and pastas that mention 'whole grain' instead of just wheat flour in the ingredients. Try to eat unpolished rice (brown rice). You could also add wheat bran (husk of wheat) to your chappatti dough. How to consume: A few teaspoons once or twice a week is enough. Alternately, use sunflower oil for cooking. Conditions it helps: ~ Diseases like psoriasis, where you get pink, scaly patches on your skin and cracked soles.~ Diseases like atopic dermatitis, where skin is excessively dry and sensitive and keeps breaking into rashes. ~ Some forms of acne.
 

Green tea What it does: Green tea is loaded with flavinoids and antioxidants. Drinking it is the best gift you could give your skin. Sunlight, UV rays and free radical (chemicals) in the atmosphere can damage your skin cell's structure and leave it incapable of repairing itself, making you look older and wrinkled before your years. It may also cause skin cancer. Antioxidants in green tea battle these agents, helping your skin stay younger. How to consume: Soak a tea bag or a teaspoon of tea leaves in a cup of hot water for at least three minutes to get the full extract. This is available at any pharmacy. Adding milk neutralises the antioxidants, so it is best to have it black. Conditions it helps: ~ Wrinkled, aged looking skin and sunburns. ~ Rashes due to sun exposure.~ Pigmentation due to menopause or pregnancy.

Colorblindness is a sex-linked trait - the X chromosome is responsible. Since it only takes one 'good' X chromosome to prevent color blindness, women can be carriers without being colorblind themselves. However, if a man has a defective X chromosome, he will be colorblind, since he doesn't have a second X chromosome to back it up and take over.

OTHER

Color blindness in women is very rare. Only about 0.5% of all women have some kind of color vision deficiency and often this isnt even recognized. Most people think color blindness is only mans business but that is wrong.

Cholesterol is the waxy, fat-like substance found in your *lo**stream and every cell in your body. While the substance is normal as well as important to some body functions (without it our bodies would be unable to produce cell membrane, Vitamin D and various hormones, such as progesterone, oestrogen and testosterone) there is trouble when our bodies have too much cholesterol. This condition is known as hypercholesterolemia. Sasha Thomas and Janet Rankine-Henry, nutrition coaches based in St Catherine, state that an oversupply of cholesterol will result in the waxy substance starting to form blockage in the arteries, which can lead to stroke and heart attack. 'Bad' cholesterol A healthy serving of vegetables. Low-density Lipoprotein (ldl) is what is known as 'bad' cholesterol. It carries cholesterol to tissues, included the arteries. Most of the cholesterol in the *lo** is the ldl form. The higher the level of ldl cholesterol in the *lo**, the greater your risk for heart disease. High-density Lipoproteins (HLD) is what is known as 'good' cholesterol. Hdl protects your body by carrying cholesterol away from your arteries back to the liver, which removes it from the body. A low level of Hdl cholesterol increases your risk for heart disease. Cholesterol comes from two sources. It's produced in your body, mostly in the liver, and it's found in foods that come from animals, such as meats, poultry, fish, seafood and dairy products. Egg yolks and organ meats are high in cholesterol. The body makes all the cholesterol it needs. Everyone over the age of 20 should get their cholesterol levels measured at least once every five years. How to lower your cholesterol level Eat small portion of meats Fill up on vegetables Egg yolks and organ meats are high in cholesterol. Avoid vegetable and salad toppings, such as chopped eggs, crumbled bacon and cheese Use margarine instead of butter, and use sparingly Select foods that are steamed, garden fresh, broiled, boiled, baked, roasted, poached. Decrease saturated fats and trans fat Increase soluble fibre, such as oats (10-25g per day) Eat whole fruits instead of juices Drink skimmed milk, low-fat yoghurt instead of whole milk Use lean, well-trimmed meats baked, broiled, roasted or stewed; shrimp is low in fat but high in cholesterol Discard fat which cooks out of meat; chicken and turkey Use oil and margarine made from unsaturated fats such as corn, cottonseed, soyabean, sunflower and olive At Chinese restaurants, look for items that are steamed, Jum (poached), Kow (roasted), Shu (barbecued).
