Tax Administration enforcers yesterday seized two luxury vehicles belonging to popular dancehall artiste, Bounty Killer.
The vehicles, a Range Rover and Totoya Land Cruiser, were said to have been seized because the deejay, whose real name is Rodney Pryce, owes the tax department millions of dollars in taxes.
Officials visited the deejay's Constant Spring Road apartment early yesterday morning and first confiscated his white Range Rover, while residents stood by watching. Sometime after, his Land Cruiser was also placed on a wrecker and taken away.
Communications director at the Tax Administration Department, Merris Haughton, would not give details, but confirmed that other entertainers are among several categories of persons being eyed.
"There is a serious problem with delinquency right across the board - entertainers, business persons and professionals," Haughton stressed.
She made it clear that she was not singling out entertainers, but indicated that a number of them are in arrears.
Efforts by THE STAR to contact Bounty after the incident were unsuccessful but his lawyer, Linda Wright, said that her client will be meeting with a chartered accountant today to review the matter.
She said that the deejay did file his annual returns, and paid monies to the tax department.
Wright further said that the tax department assessed Bounty for much more than he had paid and the artiste objected.
Last month, the Tax Department also seized a Mercedes Benz motorcar from the home of dancehall star 'Elephant Man' whose real name is Oneil Bryan.
Grammy award-winning deejay, 'Beenie Man', whose real name is Moses Davis, was also hauled before the tax court in 2008 for allegedly owing millions of dollars in taxes.
Popular deejay Bounty Killer will this week be seeking ways in which himself and the Inland Revenue Department can come to some form of agreement over his alleged owing of millions of dollars in taxes.
This following the seizure of two high-end motor vehicles, a Ranger Rover and Toyota Land Cruiser, which belong to the deejay.
When contacted on the weekend, Bounty's attorney Linda Wright said a meeting involving representatives of the deejay, and personnel from the revenue department is scheduled for some time later week.
The Special Enforcement Team of the Revenue Department went to the entertainer's home at the Oakland apartment complex along Constant Spring Road, St Andrew, on Friday where the vehicles were seized.
Bounty, born Rodney Price, is the second entertainer to find himself in trouble with the taxman.
Earlier this month, the revenue department seized a Mercedes Benz motor car from Elephant Man's St Andrew home.Deejay Elephant Man is set to appeal the decisions made by the Inland Revenue Department to seize his Benz to settle millions owed in taxes.
In July, the deejay, born O'Neil Bryan, got a rude awakening when the Special Enforcement team at the Inland Revenue Department, with assistance from the St Andrew police, swooped down on his house, located off Hope Road and seized his red Mercedes-Benz.
Since then, the deejay's attorney, Roderick Gordon, explained to THE STAR that Elephant Man is adamant about getting back his vehicle. He also said the deejay wants his legal team to look into his legal and constitutional rights concerning the matter.
When THE STAR spoke to Gordon last week, he explained that his team had appealed the decision made by the Inland Revenue Department. He said: "We have appealed all the decisions against him. The Taxpayer Appeals Tribunal has agreed to hear an appeal for one of the areas he has appealed for. We're still pursuing the other areas that were appealed as well."
The date for the Appeals Tribunal, Gordon said, has not yet been officially set.
In March, the tax department had placed Elephant Man on a list of 50 high-profile delinquent taxpayers. Elephant Man is known for songs such as Sweep and This is How We Do It, featuring Bounty Killer. Last week, Bounty Killer also got a visit from the Inland Revenue Department, which seized two of his vehicles.

( l - r ) Yendi Phillipps, Edmund Bartlett
Following Yendi Phillipps' second-place achievement at the Miss Universe Pageant at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas on Monday night, Minister of Tourism Ed Bartlett applauded the efforts of the beauty queen, saying: "Yendi's elegant beauty, eloquence and confidence had catapulted her into getting the highest ever finish by Jamaica in the Miss Universe pageants."
In a release to THE STAR, Bartlett further commended the queen by saying Phillipps is a "true ambassador for Jamaica and represents among the best in what young women and girls in Jamaica should look up to as a role model."
It is alleged the minister has high hopes of Jamaica hosting the 2012 Miss Universe pageant but this he says isn't concrete but the ministry and the pageant organisers are currently in touch regarding the possibilities of hosting the 2012 extravaganza.
Bartlett said: "It is something we definitely want to look at but more 2012 and not 2011. I would definitely need time to sort out my convention centre and so on. There is no official word just now so after further talks from the meetings in New York then I will engage the media," he ended.
In an interview with THE STAR, the minister was in high spirits as he spoke about the tremendous accolades of Yendi Phillipps on an international scale and how much good it will do for the country.
Phillipps has now returned home where she is scheduled to attend a press conference with the Prime Minister and other dignitaries.
Popular dancehall entertainer Carlton 'Ghost' Hylton was fined when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday to answer charges of possession of ganja.
Hylton was fined $100 or 10 days imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the offence. His fingerprints were ordered taken.
However, the singer's attorney tried in vain to get the court not to have his client's fingerprints taken.
His attorney stated that once Hylton's fingerprints were taken, the convictions would be recorded for a specified period and this would in turn affect his prospects of travelling overseas.
Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, however, declined the attorney's request as she explained that this was not the first time Hylton was coming before the court for such a charge.
RM Pusey said she was disgusted with the actions of some of the popular entertainers who seemed to believe they were above the law.
Lady Saw with her partner, Lloyd 'John John' James. - Contributed
Dancehall artiste Lady Saw's fans believed she was no longer with her companion of 17 years when she stated on Twitter that she is 'single and loving it'.
The artiste has been with her lover, producer John John, for almost two decades. But on Wednesday, the artiste, whose real name is Marion Hall, tweeted, "When you give a man second chances over and over again and he [expletive] again and again leave his sorry [expletive]."
Later in the night, she said: "To all Twitter and Facebook informer bring back this to you know who. Am single and loving it."
But Lady Saw said this was all in good fun.
"Nothing like that. Don't tek that as nutt'n. I was just there, messing around. Sometimes you do that to send the wrong message to some people," she told THE STAR.
"Everything is beautiful. My man is in bed sleeping. Don't pay me no mind, sometimes mi head tek mi. Everything pat, everything good. I put whatever I want to put on there."
She explained that her relationship has faced problems, but she is happy in it.
"We are not perfect. We are like any normal couple. Sometimes you have people who will even start rumours and then you argue with your man; and then you look like a fool after when you realise nutt'n nuh happen," Lady Saw told THE STAR.
"Men make mistakes just like women. Sometimes you have to give and take. Once you can work it out and nobody nah dead, work it out. Mi deh wid my man how long and every day feels like I just met the man. It feels perfect. There is no relationship that's perfect, but he makes me happy."
In the meantime, Lady Saw says she is upbeat about her album, My Way, which will be released on September 7.
"I can't wait, and everybody is talking about it. People are excited about it. It's not as raw as the Lady Saw before," she said, noting that she will also be releasing a one-drop album later.
However, the artiste said she is disappointed that some of the songs she did recently did not get the chance to make it onto the album.
Lady Saw is also excited about the lingerie line she will be starting in the future.
"I plan to come out with my lingerie line. I am thinking of bringing a high-end line. I already did my logo for that. I am bringing the sex in sexy," Lady Saw said.
Jamaica's third fastest man Nesta Carter has admited to have surprised even himself after clocking a blistering 9.78 at the Rieti Grand Prix meet in Italy yesterday.
The time set on the same track that compatriot Asafa Powell broke the world record in 2007, has seen Carter set a world leading mark, which he shares with American Tyson Gay.
"Even though I noticed that my times were coming down and everyone kept saying the Rieti track is fast, I was only expecting to run and do my best here, not run 9.7 at this time of the season," Carter was quoted as saying on popular track and field website trackalerts.com.
"I ran a race like two days ago and my body is not fully recovered from that run as yet, so I was not expecting to do that here," Carter said.
The event saw three other athletes producing personal bests as the top five went under 10 seconds. Running out of lane seven, Carter, who has been creating a storm in the event this season, was out of the blocks very quickly and continued to pull away from his opponents to score a convincing win. The win followed three other sub-10-second runs which included his previous personal best of 9.85 seconds three days earlier at the Van Damme Diamond League meet in Belgium.
The race also produced a personal best for the three athletes finishing behind Carter, the United States' Ryan Bailey clocked 9.88 seconds for second, while Jamaica's Mario Forsythe continued his rapid improvement, finishing third in 9.95 seconds.
france wonder boy
France wonder boy Christophe Lemaitre the double sprint European champion stopped the clock at 9.97 seconds for fourth. It was also a season best for World Championships and Olympic 4x100 metres relay gold medallist Michael Frater, who ended fifth in 9.98 seconds.
Sherone Simpson earned another win at the meet for Jamaica as the 100 metres Olympic joint silver medallist, won her second race in a row following victory in Berlin last week, as she won the women's 100 metres in 11.11 seconds ahead of the Bahamas' Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie in 11.15 seconds as Aleen Bailey had a fifth-place finish in 11.31 seconds.
There were mixed results in the women's 400 metre hurdles for Jamaica as Diamond League overall winner Kaliese Spencer fell at the final hurdle and ended at the back of the field, while Wilson was third in 55.07 as Sheena Tosta won the event in 54.71.
For the second time in a week, Kenya's David Rudisha put his name in the record books in the men's 800 metres. After a record run of 1:41.09 at the Berlin Diamond League meet, the Kenyan continued his excellent form this season as he broke his own mark with a new record of 1:41.01.
Maxie Robinson will spend his next six months in prison for calling the police and threatening to release the deadly Anthrax in the air conditioning of a downtown Kingston building.
An apologetic Robinson appeared before Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.
On a previous appearance, Robinson told the court that men instructed him to make the report as they wanted to create a diversion by causing panic in Kingston so that they could transport their narcotics unprovoked and undetected.
RM Pusey did not accept Robinson's argument. Furthermore, police investigations had also revealed that the information provided by Robinson was fabricated.
Robinson, who begged for the mercy of the court, explained that he is a man of good character and has always tried to assist the police in whatever way possible.
"I am sorry for my actions," Robinson said, shortly before he was sentenced.A policeman who fled the Ocho Rios Police Station, and later shot one of several cops who chased him, was killed by his colleagues last night.
Up to late last night police had declined to release the dead policeman's name, but information reaching THE STAR is that he is stationed in the Corporate Area. The injured police who is from Ocho Rios was shot in the forearm, the police say.
THE STAR learnt that about 10:30 p.m., a boat ride was in progress in Ocho Rios, St Ann, when gunshots were reportedly fired at the event.
A team of policemen was said to have gone on the boat and a man who was a patron at the event was held and taken in for questioning. He reportedly did not identity himself as a policeman.
THE STAR further learnt that while being processed at the police station, the man tried to escape custody and ran from the station with a group of policemen hot on his heels.
Things took a turn for the worse, however, as the man reportedly began firing at the group of lawmen, one of whom was shot in the forearm.
The fire was returned and the fleeing man hit and subsequently succumbed to his injuries. It was later discovered that he was a policeman.Lightning struck a Clarendon man to death on Saturday after he reportedly travelled to St James in search of scrap metal.
Police reports are that Thomas Bell, also called 'Souljie', of Crooked River, died on the spot after being struck by lightning in an open field at Unity Hall.
Reports from the Anchovy police are that about 2 p.m., Bell was on the hunt for scrap metal when he went into an open field in a section of the community.
It is reported that Bell used a piece of zinc to shelter himself from the heavy rains while he tried to get the piece of scrap metal. While trying, however, he was struck by lightning and subsequently died.A three-month sentence was handed down to a 19-year-old man who told the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday, he stole a BlackBerry Smart phone to send himself back to school.
Charged with larceny, unlawful wounding and having an offensive weapon is Damaine Lewis.
After pleading guilty with explanation on all charges, Lewis told the court he stole the phone in an effort to send himself back to school. He also told the court he has made several attempts to find a job which have proven futile.
However, the complainant told the court that not only did Lewis take her BlackBerry, but in the process of stealing the phone, he cut her on the hand.
After passing sentence, Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey also ordered that Lewis be fingerprinted.
( l - r ) Vybz Kartel, Wayne Marshall - File
Despite the insults levied at him and being at odds for years, Wayne Marshall says he and Vybz Kartel have put their differences aside to set an example.
Speaking with THE WEEKEND STAR yesterday, Wayne Marshall says he is now on speaking terms with Vybz Kartel.
"We good. We put our differences behind us so whatever matters allowed our friendship to wither, we kinda drop all of that and we are being diplomatic about our linkage," he said, noting that the reunion took place about a month ago.
"It's not like we are chummy. Our relationship precedes success. So it's kinda like remembering where we are coming from as friends."
Marshall and Vybz Kartel have not been on good terms since Vybz Kartel left the Bounty Killer-led Alliance. After the split, Marshall was insulted in Vybz Kartel songs like A Wah Do Dem and Seh Weh Yuh Feel Fi Seh in 2008 and When Since in 2009.
However, Marshall says he believes that the reunion might not be understood by outside parties.
"It is a very touchy issue. There are glitches in there. On both sides of the fence you still have people who won't understand why. Mi nuh really talk to nobody (from Alliance) bout it but at the end of the day, I have to be responsible for my affairs," Marshall told THE WEEKEND STAR.
"Me and Kartel a go far back. A nuh nutten if we decide fi put big man things over likkle boy things. Mi nuh waan my son come up and see mi inna war. We have to keep it civil."
As he suspected, the reunion might not be going down well with all members of the Alliance. A source close to the Alliance said some members are not pleased with when and how they found out about the reunion.
"Marshall is the devil because all along you have the war going on with Mavado and Vybz Kartel and Kartel been saying all kind of things about him. All of a sudden yuh hear seh him and Kartel a friend from dem time deh. Is like Marshall a go round di singer and still a par wid Addi," the source told THE WEEKEND STAR.
Adding: "Man weh do dem sup'm deh can't be trusted. Di yute dem a seh Marshall a boatie. Marshall a one Judas, him a boatie. There is no way him can friend wid di devil and par round God disciple."
example of peace
Nonetheless, Marshall is urging others to follow the example of peace that was set by Bounty Killer and Beenie Man recently after years of rivalry.
"We a urge everybody fi drop di ting and keep the unity for the sake of the music and the fans. Peace wi seh! Kudos to Beenie Man and Bounty for their unity. It good fi know dat dem can drop everything and level the vibes. We as role model are responsible for setting examples," he said.
As for another collaboration with Vybz Kartel, Marshall said, "that's beyond my fortune telling abilities, but who knows."
In the meantime, the artiste says his song My Heart has been growing in popularity. And as part of the movement, he says he will be doing promotional tours in Canada and the United Kingdom. In addition, he said he has been doing work with Stephen McGregor, Junior Gong and Baby G.
Stop the rumors about French striker Thierry Henry joining the New York Red Bulls. He's here.
The 32-year-old former Arsenal and Barcelona player signed a multiyear contract on Wednesday and he is expected to make his Red Bulls' debut on July 22 in an exhibition against Premier League club Tottenham.
"Some people might think I am going to go there for vacation - I do actually go there for vacation - but it won't be for vacation this time," Henry said in a video interview on the club website. "I'm a competitor and I don't like to lose."
Henry was released by Barcelona last month after scoring just four goals last season.
"This marks an exciting new chapter in my career and life," Henry said.
Henry will be introduced at a press conference on Thursday at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.
"Thierry is not only a world class player who will undoubtedly improve our squad, but he has shown most importantly throughout his career that he is a winner," said Erik Soler, general manager and sporting director of the Red Bulls. "He has made it clear to us that he is committed in the short and long term to help in our vision of making our organization the premium franchise in Major League Soccer."
With France, Henry won the World Cup in 1998 and the 2000 European Championship, but sparked outrage last year when his handball during a playoff match helped to deny Ireland a spot at this year's World Cup.
At the finals in South Africa, France went out at the group stage after the team was beset by a player protest.
Henry guided Arsenal to the Premier League title in 2002 and 2004 before leaving in 2007 to join Barcelona, where he won six trophies in 2009 - the Champions League, the Spanish league, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Supercup, the UEFA Supercup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Red Bulls, who previously were known as the MetroStars, have a history of signing star players in the twilight of their careers. Italian Roberto Donadoni played for them in 1996 and '97, Brazilian great Branco was with them in 1997, German Lothar Matthaus in 2000 and Frenchman Youri Djorkaeff was here in 2005 and '06.
None of them led the team to a title.Red Bulls leading scorer Juan Pablo Angel welcomed Henry's arrival, which was announced just days after New York played a 0-0 tie with D.C. United.
"I think it means everything for the industry in this country," Angel said. "He's arguably one of the best players in our generation. He's a player that has won everything he could possibly win in this sport and he's still fit. I think it's an honor to have him here. He's going to be a tremendous addition to the league, to the Red Bulls."
There have been rumors for almost two years that Henry would one day join the Red Bulls. A year ago, he said he wanted to play in the United States and the door opened recently when he parted ways with Barcelona after a season in which he lost his starting job.
"We have been hearing about it for years now, for it to finally come to fruition is a good thing for the team," Red Bulls midfielder Seth Stammler said. "I'm sure it's good for him for the next step in his career. He's won championships at all levels. To come over here and not prove himself to the world in soccer, but take our team to the next level and hopefully get a championship here will be a good step for him and obviously great for the organization."
Henry wasn't a factor in the World Cup. He was not good enough to start for a French team that disgraced itself on and off the field.
However, the Red Bulls hope a combination of Angel and Henry up front can finally lead them to a title.
"It's kind of wild to think about it," rookie defender Tim Ream said. "Coming in, I knew I was going to be playing with Juan Pablo and I knew what kind of player he was. You put those two together it's pretty incredible. Front two, there is not much you can say about them. They are just spectacular players."

Tourism to Jamaica has dropped this year in the aftermath of a *la*hdy government manhunt for alleged drug lord Christopher "Dudus" Coke, the Jamaica Observer newspaper reports.
Citing data released Wednesday by the Planning Institute of Jamaica, the Observer says stay-over visits to the island dropped 3.3% in June. "Overall, more than 6,300 less individuals stayed over in Jamaica during the quarter when compared to the corresponding period in 2009," the paper said.
The drop is blamed on days-long clashes between supporters of Coke and government forces in late May that left 76 people dead. Foreigners on Jamaica's tourist beaches were not considered in danger during the battles. But the violence brought international media attention to the slums of Kingston, Jamaica's capital, and the role of powerful gang leaders, such as Coke, who control them.
Coke was captured on June 22 (while wearing a disguise) and now faces multiple drug-related charges in the United States.

Employees at one of the major hospitals in the Corporate Area were given a shock when a woman who had just given birth told them that her grandfather is also her biological father and now the father of her child.
THE WEEKEND STAR learnt that the 50-odd-year-old St Andrew man is alleged to have impregnated his daughter and years later also impregnated his granddaughter.
Although officials from the institution were tight-lipped, upon visiting the institution, THE WEEKEND STAR was able to find other employees who claim to have heard of the incident.
According to them the almost unbelievable revelation occurred some two weeks ago and has become a hot topic.
It is said that the man's granddaughter, who is in her early 20s, disclosed to a nurse that the person responsible for getting her pregnant was the same person who got her mother pregnant.
It is also said that the girl's mother was asked about the situation and after denying it at first, eventually admitted that her father had got her pregnant.
THE WEEKEND STAR further heard that the story took another twist when the mother revealed that some years ago before getting pregnant, her daughter had complained about being molested by her grandfather.
"A one big mix-up, dem life deh nuh right at all. Mi hear seh di man breed him daugher and then breed him own granddaughter. A wah him ago tell God seh?" a security guard at the hospital said.
"It naw loud up but people weh work inna di place hear bout it cause yu done know seh news travel fast. When mi first hear mi did think a joke, but a big woman nurse fren weh mi have pinch mi and tell mi seh a true thing," a porter also claimed.
Persons also claim that the police may also get involved in the matter.Obeah men in sections of the island are boasting of an increase in profits from thugs who they claim are visiting them to stay out of jail.
THE WEEKEND STAR has learnt that gangsters are forking out up to $30,000 for the services of these obeah men.
It is said the increase for the aid of obeah comes in the wake of intense pressure on members of the criminal underworld by the police in recent times.
"Yu nuh see how di police a pressure di man dem? Inna di past three months or so, business a boom cause nobody nuh waa go jail or prison ya now. So mi have a few clients weh come to me fi help," one obeah man, Father Murrayfrom a community in east Kingston said.
According to him, his counterparts in other sections of Kingston and St Andrew, as well as in St Catherine, Clarendon and Montego Bay, St James are also benefiting financially from the gangsters seeking 'special help'.
"A just special help dem a look eno, dem know a serious times and we have di powers fi help dem out so dem come to we," another obeah man from St Catherine, Elder Joesaid.
Asked how they help their clients to evade police custody, the two men said their services include giving special prayers and a bath, after which oils and powders are given to be used as directed at home.
"In a case like this, wi gi dem a bath and chant two prayer. And of course dem get oil and powder fi carry home. A package like that can run up to $30,000," Elder Joe explained.
Those who cannot afford such a package can negotiate for a bath or just the oils and powders.
According to the obeah men, the behaviour of some of the thugs who solicit their services has left them surprised to say the least, as some even break down into tears while claiming the police are out to get them.
"If yu see how some a di man dem behave when dem come yah yu wouldn't believe seh dem a badman. Man come ya a cry eye water seh him cyaa manage di jail ting now so him a beg mi fi work up someting special fi him," Father Murray claimed.
Meanwhile checks with a number of police sources found this was something they have heard of but could not say if it was true.
"When it comes to these criminals you hear all sorts of arguments about things they are said to be involved in. The obeah thing is something we hear of but belief kills and cures so fly high, fly low if we want them we will get them," an inspector attached to the Organised Crime Investigation Division said.

CORPORAL Leslie Moodie, the former Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) soldier convicted of murdering four patrons at a Kingston nightclub, was yesterday sentenced to hang by Justice Horace Marsh who said that the ex-army man was beyond being reformed and rehabilitated.
The sentence was immediately hailed by relatives of the victims, who said that justice had been served. But the occasion was also one of mixed emotions, as relatives wept openly, the pain of their tragic loss still an open wound in their lives.
Disc jockey Davion Carr, 19, one of four killed inside the Double Diamond nightclub in October 2008 by former Jamaica Defence Force soldier Leslie Moodie.
The emotional mother of 28-year-old victim William Wilberforce could be overheard in court saying, "Thank you, Jesus", as Justice Marsh pronounced the sentence for the October 20, 2008 murders inside the Double Diamond nightclub along Washington Boulevard in Kingston.
But in stark contrast, the 33-year-old Moodie as was his usual demeanour throughout the proceedings sat quietly while the sentence was being read.
Moments after, Wilberforce's mother rushed outside the courtroom where she wept aloud. "Him kick mi son and shot him up," the woman cried while being consoled by a relative.
In handing down the sentence, Justice Marsh said the only punishment that could be imposed was death. He said the mitigating factors did not outweigh the extreme and exceptional circumstances of the murders.
"Punishment cannot be reached by any other means," said Justice Marsh. "In this case, the sentence of death should be imposed."
Moodie's legal team of Pierre Rogers and Michael Deans had spent most of Wednesday trying to convince the court to impose a sentence of life imprisonment. On the other hand, the Crown was just as strident in arguing for the death penalty.
The convict is expected to appeal the sentence.
The soldier was earlier convicted for the Heroes Day murders of Wilberforce, 19-year-old Dijan Powell, 28, Davion Carr, 19, and Lynchmore Forbes.
Eyewitnesses testified that Moodie was inside the club acting in an obnoxious manner and ha****ing women during a birthday party. He went berserk after he was challenged about his behaviour and pulled his licensed 9mm pistol and began firing.
When the shooting ended, a witness testified during the trial, Moodie began waving his weapon menacingly, while asking, "Who next? Who next?"
The victims were shot multiple times. Wilberforce was shot nine times, as Moodie emptied two magazine clips during the process. Evidence was also given that Moodie used his foot to flip over the mortally wounded Wilberforce while he lay sprawled on the ground, and exclaimed, "From night you a gwaan like you bad, tonight you ago dead!" He again fired repeatedly into Wilberforce's body.
A friend of Moodie's, the court had been told, tried talking him out of his actions but he continued his mayhem.
His attorneys had argued that Moodie fired in self-defence.
Yesterday, as bits of the evidence was being outlined, Wilberforce's mother cringed while bemoaning the incident.
Following the verdict, family members of some of the victims, who gathered in front the Supreme Court, said that Moodie deserved death for his actions. "He took lives, so they must take his," Carr's mother told the Observer.
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth A 40-year-old man who was wanted by the police after he allegedly sexually abused his 80-odd-year-old mother, was reportedly shot and killed at his home at Top Hill, St Elizabeth early yesterday.
The Junction Police say that in the "wee hours" of the morning, three police officers attached to the station went to the house of Rodney Joseph, who was accused of regularly sexually assaulting and beating his mother.
The police say they tried to convince Joseph to exit the house and leave peacefully with them but instead he issued threats.
It's alleged that Joseph subsequently rushed from inside the house with a knife in his hand and stabbed at a policeman who had to jump backwards to avoid injury.
A colleague reportedly fired three shots at the knife-wielding man hitting him in the shoulder and side. Joseph was rushed to the Black River Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
As Jamaicans have their top three stolen motor vehicle models Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sunny and Honda Civic in that order, in the US more upscale models are the target of crooks.
According to an Associated Press report the Cadillac Escalade tops the list of new cars stolen in the US.
Each year, 10.8 out of every thousand late model Escalades end up getting stolen, broken into, or having parts ripped off, an analysis from the US Highway Loss Data Institute is quoted in the report.
"That's the highest rate of theft claims of any vehicle in America. The Escalade has topped the list since 2002. You may have heard that a lot of Toyota Camrys get stolen. They do. But it's only 1.6 out of every thousand," the report said.
The report added that the Institute looked only at cars from the most recent three model years. These cars all have the latest anti-theft technologies, including engine immobilisers that prevent hot-wiring.
"That won't stop a determined thief from loading a car on a flat-bed truck," said the Institute's spokesman.
Escalades are equipped with anti-theft ignition immobilisers that prevent them from being started without a special key.
Second on the Institute's list is the Chevy Silverado, with an annual claim frequency of eight out of every thousand.
According to the report the Ford F-250 crew-cab pickup, Infiniti G37 two-door car, Dodge Charger with its high-power HEMI engine and Chevrolet Corvette Z06 round out the list of the top five vehicles most likely to be the subject of insurance theft claims in the US.
Least likely targets of car thieves are family vehicles like the Volvo S80, Saturn Vue, Nissan Murano, Honda Pilot and Subaru Impreza.
The Highway Loss Data Institute, which is part of the Arlington-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, calculated theft claim rates for vehicles from the 2007-2009 model years. The data reports thefts per insured vehicles on the road.
The Escalade, which starts at US$62,495, has ranked as the most-stolen in six of the last seven reports.
Almost one in every four Escalade theft claims is for US$40,000 or more.
Large SUVs like the Escalade have the highest overall theft losses, with large pickups second. Pick up trucks are targeted for various reasons the Institute said. In addition to their looks, large pickups can be used for work or they might be carrying valuable tools or cargo.
The Institute said the frequency of theft claims for cars and SUVS has been declining since 1998. Pickup thefts also had been on the downswing until 2006, when the Institute noticed an uptick in claims.
POLICE yesterday seized several boxes of uncustomed items, valued at more than $5 million, from premises off Waterloo Road in Kingston. Several boxes of steam irons, television sets, blenders and other electrical appliance were among the items seized.
"Police acting on information swooped down on premises at 4 Annette Crescent, Kingston where they confiscated the illegal items," head of the Police Flying Squad Superintendent Cornwall 'Bigga' Ford told the Observer.
No one was arrested in the raid.
"The operation is the eighth such raid that the police teams, including the Flying Squad, would have carried out in the past six weeks," an officer on the scene said yesterday.
The officer said since the start of the year they have seized more than $30 million worth of illegally imported items.
"This operation is just a continuation of the efforts of the police to clamp down on the illegal trade," said Superintendent Ford.
Seven accused persons, said to be key players in the trade are now before the court.
"...The police will continue a manhunt to nab other criminal elements we believe are helping to push the trade," an officer said yesterday.
In the meantime, Superintendent Ford reported yesterday that he has received death threats, believed to be linked to the clampdown on illegal imports.
"I have been threatened but me no fraid a nobody," Superintendent Ford told the Observer.
It is the second time this year that a senior police officer has been threatened following operations to clamp down on uncustomed trade.
Earlier this year Superintendent Fitz Bailey, head of Fraud Squad, on a similar operation to seize several million dollars worth of uncustomed cigarettes, reported that he was threatened.
Mexico captain Rafael Marquez has expressed delight over completing his move to the New York Red Bulls from Barcelona.
Marquez has long been linked with a move to the Red Bulls and came to an agreement last week to rescind the remaining two years of his Barca contract. The defender has now signed a multi-year deal with the Major League Soccer side, which will see him link up with former Barca team-mate Thierry Henry.
"I'm very excited to be joining the Red Bulls," Marquez said on his new club's website. "It's a new experience, it's a new challenge so I'm very happy with all this.
"I think American football is growing and the national team are now a big team, they did good work in the last World Cup
"So I'm very happy to be here and I hope to do good work here. I want to do my best to help win the first championship. I'm very happy to be here and for this challenge.
"Despite having the opportunity to fulfil my contract with Barcelona, coming to New York and playing in Major League Soccer was a chance that I could not refuse.
"I'm completely committed to doing my very best to help the Red Bulls in the play-off push this year and to compete for championships in the years to come."
Marquez has played 242 games for Barca, helping them to four league titles, two Champions Leagues, the World Club Cup, the European Super Cup, the Spanish Cup and three Spanish Super Cups in seven glittering years at the Nou Camp.
He joins Henry and Colombian striker Juan Pablo Angel as the Red Bulls' designated players - ones whose wages are exempt from the league's salary cap.

Landon Donovan has admitted he wants to return to Everton on a permanent basis and is prepared to turn his back on Major League Soccer in America.
Everton boss David Moyes wants to sign £9million-rated Donovan from LA Galaxy, after the US World Cup star impressed during a two-month loan spell at Goodison Park last season.
Donovan, who has also attracted interest from Manchester City, is expected to move before the transfer window closes at the end of next month and confirmed he is the subject of interest from a number of clubs.
"We hear little bits and pieces here and there," said Donovan. "There have certainly been clubs that are interested but right now it's only preliminary. I think there's still a lot of times in the transfer window so we'll see what moves are made and if it's serious then we'll treat it seriously. Anything is possible.
"I would love to go back to Everton. I love the people there, I love the fans there, but that said I love being in America too, so we're going to take everything into account and see where it ends up."
Donovan is seen as the major selling point for the MLS and is under pressure to remain in his native America to maintain soccer's growing profile, a situation he acknowledged he had to accept.
"This is what I do," said Donovan. "This is my job and I understand all the parts of it, on and off the field. But I'm going to make the decision that's best for me."
Don Garber, MLS commissioner, admitted it would be a major blow to US soccer if Donovan left to join the Premier League. "We need to deepen the connection between the American fan as an MLS fan first and a Premier League fan second," said Garber.
"In order to do that, we need our best American players here. We need somebody like Landon, who has grown up in southern California, who is bi-lingual, almost like Captain America for our national team, somebody who is really inspiring a nation of soccer fans.
"We want to have him play next Saturday in front of people who want to see an LA Galaxy game, as opposed to having them wait to experience him on the Fox Soccer Channel or ESPN because they are watching a game being played in Europe.
"I'm the commissioner of MLS and for my goal, raising the profile of our league, we need our best players here and I will always fight hard to keep them here."

Jamaican-born Slovenia's Merlene Ottey looks at the scoreboard following a Women's 4x100 Relay heat, during the European Athletics Championships, in Barcelona, Spain, Saturday, July 31, 2010. Photo: Matt Dunham / AP
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Fifty-year-old Merlene Ottey became the oldest athlete to compete at the European Championships after anchoring Slovenia's 4x100 women's relay team yesterday.
Ottey, a naturalised Slovenian of Jamaican origin, surpassed the record previously held by 47-year-old French marathon runner Nicole Brakebusch-Leveque.
Ottey said competing at 50 meant as much as any of the 29 medals she's won at major competitions since her debut in 1979.
"It's right up there with all the medals I have won," Ottey said. "I don't know if there's any athlete over 40 competing out here in sprinting, so to be competing at 50 is great."
Slovenia failed to reach today's final at Barcelona's Olympic stadium after they finished seventh with a time of 44.30 seconds. Ukraine won the heat in 43.24 seconds.
"My leg was difficult because I had the anchor leg," Ottey said. "Normally I catch people, but this time I couldn't catch anybody so it was difficult."
Ottey has competed at seven Olympic Games, starting with Moscow in 1980. She won bronze in the 200 in the 1992 Barcelona Games, when she was 32. But running now was providing new challenges.
"This is more than I ever got in my whole life," Ottey said. "I find the challenge great, it brings me greater joy to compete with people that are younger. (But) it didn't cross my mind (at 40) that I would still be running now. I thought I would retire."
The Hanover-born Ottey isn't going to stop either as she hopes to qualify for next year's World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, in the individual sprints or relay team. She hasn't ruled out the London 2012 Olympics either.
Ottey's secret? A mixture of nature and dedication, she figures.
"I guess it's my genes, and I like to run you know, so that's it," Ottey said.
Teammate Tina Murn hopes her illustrious colleague keeps running.
"It's an honour of course for all of us -- (it's) something special," Murn said.
Bolt, Gay & Powell to race in Stockholm Diamond League
Usain Bolt and sprint rivals Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell are to meet for the first time in 2010 in the 100m at the Stockholm Diamond League on 6 August.
It will be the first time triple Olympic champion Bolt, fellow Jamaican Powell and American Gay have met since the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.
At the Worlds, Bolt took gold in a time of 9.58 seconds with Gay second and Powell finishing third.
The trio also will meet in the Diamond League final at Brussels on 27 August.
The 2009 world final was one of the most remarkable sprint races of all time, with Gay running 9.71 to claim silver and Powell taking bronze with 9.84.
But all three have not raced together since - although Bolt beat Powell in the Paris Diamond League event on 16 July, running 9.84 seconds.
And Gay also beat Powell in the 100m at the British Grand Prix in Gateshead.
Stockholm was the venue when Powell recorded his only professional victory in nine races against compatriot Bolt at the 2008 meet before the Beijing Olympics.
"I think it was the only [100m] race he has lost in his [professional] life so he probably wants to come back for revenge," said meeting director Rajne Soderberg.
Powell and Gay were already scheduled to participate at the meeting, while Bolt was added to the bill after negotiations stretching over several weeks.
"He [Bolt] had missed a couple of races [with injury] and did not want to run more 200 metres, so it is a great honour to have him. This will increase interest in the meeting for the future and (talk of the race) will linger on for years."

Ricardo Carvalho has revealed he has an agreement with Chelsea which will see him leave StamfordBridge this summer and has issued a come and get me plea to former boss Jose Mourinho.
Carvalho followed Mourinho to Chelsea in 2004, after winning the Champions League with him at Porto.
The Portugal defender was repeatedly linked with a move to Inter Milan during Mourinho's two years in charge at the San Siro and is now desperate to be reunited with him at Real Madrid.
'If there was a possibility to sign for Madrid, I would go there right now swimming or running,' Carvalho told Spanish sports newspaper AS.
'Chelsea have a commitment with me to let me go this summer, for reasons which those responsible at the club and I know.
'It would be a dream to be able to play for Madrid, which for me is the best club in the world, and to do so under the orders of the best coach in the history of football.
'With Mourinho I experienced two marvellous periods at Porto and Chelsea. To have the opportunity to win another Champions League with him at Real Madrid would be something tremendous.'
After helping Chelsea to three Barclays Premier League titles and three FA Cups, Carvalho believes his time at StamfordBridge has come to an end.
The 32-year-old has not played for Chelsea since March after picking up an ankle injury - from which he recovered in time for the World Cup - but insists that despite his advancing years he is in the prime of his career.
'I find myself in the best moment of my career, because physically I am at the top and moreover I have a great experience,' continued Carvalho.
'I spent six spectacular years at Chelsea and I had the opportunity to experience a glorious period of this club, but I repeat that to sign for Madrid would be a dream.
'I'm very grateful to Roman Abramovich for signing me and making me part of the Chelsea project for six years. He was a very important person for English football and Chelsea, who became one of the best teams in the world.'
Reports suggest Chelsea would agree to release Carvalho for a cut-price £5million.
Raul signs for Schalke after leaving Real Madrid
Former Spain striker Raul has joined German side Schalke after ending his 18-year career with Real Madrid.
The 33-year-old, who announced his departure from the Spanish giants on Monday, had hinted he could make a move to a Premier League side in England.
But on Wednesday he signed a two-year deal with Schalke, who finished second in the Bundesliga last season.
"We have signed an exceptional footballer and world-class goalscorer," said Schalke coach Felix Magath.
"His signing is a decisive step in our efforts to strengthen and restructure the squad."
Schalke had a gap to fill in its attack after Kevin Kuranyi left for Dynamo Moscow at the end of last season.
Raul scored 323 goals in 741 games for Real, and 44 goals in 102 Spain games.
That scoring ratio helped him become a legend at the Bernabeu club, which he joined in 1992 - making his first-team debut against Real Zaragoza in October 1994 at the age of 17.
And his record meant the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester United were mentioned as possible destinations for the veteran forward.
Raul helped Real seal three Champions League triumphs and six Spanish league titles in his time at the club.
When announcing his exit on Monday, he said: "This is a very tough and difficult day.
"Football has been my life and Real Madrid my home. Together we have lived unique moments.
"I feel like a footballer still and I will keep on playing but I will always be loyal to Real Madrid. I have tried to give everything in my time here.
"A new period starts today. I have been happy at Real Madrid and I will always be willing to help the club in whatever it needs."
Real president Florentino Perez also paid tribute to the departing idol and stated: "We will never forget Raul.
"There are many men who form part of the legend of Real Madrid but few that are chosen to embody the club - Raul is one of those."
Midfielder Guti, 33, who spent a total of 25 years with Real having come through their youth system, announced he was joining Turkish club Beskitas on Sunday.

Dane Richards struck a superb 25-yard winner as the New York Red Bulls subjected Manchester City to their second successive pre-season defeat in the United States. (Match Highlights)
Roberto Mancini's side opened the four-team New York Challenge with a 2-0 loss to Sporting Lisbon and were behind to the Red Bulls as early as the seventh minute after Macoumba Kandji's opener.
Jo hit back for City 11 minutes after the break but the Premier League side failed to find any rhythm and Richards struck the decisive goal with 19 minutes remaining.
It was the visitors who nearly opened the scoring first when Emmanuel Adebayor and Jo exchanged passes but the Togo striker shot straight at Bouna Coundoul in the Red Bulls goal.
And the home side duly converted their first opportunity of the match less than 60 seconds later when Richards escaped down the right flank before firing in a low cross which Kandji converted.
Thierry Henry scored in his Red Bulls debut, a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham, and was pulling all the strings as the MLS side looked to double their advantage.
The former Barcelona and Arsenal man shot narrowly wide after 21 minutes before Adebayor missed a second golden opportunity, again hitting his side-footed shot within reach of Coundoul after good work from Jo.
Manchester City have left a number of their first-team players at home but looked sluggish throughout the first half and Seth Stammler failed to hit the target with his diving header as the Red Bulls pressed for a second.
And Henry, scorer of 174 goals in 235 league starts for Arsenal, failed to beat Joe Hart, missing the ball as he attempted to round the City keeper after beating the offside trap 13 minutes before the break.
City briefly sparked into life after the half-time interval when Adebayor let fly from the edge of the box but saw his effort go wide.
And Brazilian Jo drew City level in style when he delicately lifted Greg Cunningham's low cross over Coundoul.
However, the Red Bulls were soon on the front foot again as City, despite making a host of changes, tired in the New York heat.
And the hosts secured victory in sensational style when Richards, always a menace on the wing, picked up the ball in the right channel and unleashed an unstoppable shot which went in off the bar.
City could have stolen a draw with six minutes remaining after Adam Johnson broke free on the right and swung in a low cross - but Alex Nimely inexplicably shot over from just a yard out.

Manchester City have completed the £16m-signing of left-back Aleksandar Kolarov from Lazio.
The 24-year-old Serbia international, who will provide direct competition for Wayne Bridge, was granted a work permit and passed a medical on Saturday.
"I want two top-class players for each position," said coach Roberto Mancini.
"This is an additional benefit to the team. He has a fantastic international career ahead of him. I am looking forward to working with him."
Kolarov, labelled the Serbian Roberto Carlos because of his shooting prowess, had drawn interest from several clubs, and Mancini is pleased to have captured a player he has long admired.
"I first saw Kolarov in his Lazio debut back in 2007. I have watched him a lot since then and so have the Manchester City scouts," added Mancini.
"His attacking capability is very good. He is fast and can shoot with power and accuracy.
"He also has the ability to play in numerous positions and is very good in midfield."
Kolarov, who played twice for his country at the World Cup in South Africa, will not be joining City on their current pre-season tour of America.
The deal will take City's summer spending to £75m, after signing David Silva, Yaya Toure and Jerome Boateng.
Spanish international winger Silva was unveiled on Wednesday after joining from Valencia in a £24m deal, while Toure cost a similar amount from Barcelona.
Boateng, who played for Germany in the World Cup, joined City at the beginning of June in a deal thought to be about £11m.

Sprint superstar Usain Bolt has ruled out competing for the rest of 2010 after suffering a back injury.
The 23-year-old suffered his first 100m final defeat in two years when he was easily beaten by Tyson Gay on 6 August at Stockholm's Diamond League meeting.
"2011 and 2012 are very important championship years and I hope to be back fully fit and healthy," said Bolt, after a medical examination in Germany.
Bolt will miss the remaining Diamond League meetings in Zurich and Brussels.
"I am very disappointed to miss two of the top meetings on the circuit, but trust that it is better for me not to take any risks this year," said the Olympic and World champion.
Bolt had been scheduled to face Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell - bringing together the three fastest 100m runners in history - at this year's final Diamond League meeting in Brussels on 27 August.
Bolt has been struggling with an Achilles tendon injury and looked far from fit as he stuttered behind Gay in the 100m in Sweden, with the American cruising to victory in 9.84 seconds - just 0.02 slower than the season's fastest time.
"You can get beat any day," said Bolt after the race.
"I still need to work on my strength. The first 10 metres was rubbish. I had no power, no nothing. I have tried to work on it but it didn't work out."
Despite Bolt's ongoing back issues, Simms had some positive news regarding his client's previous Achilles tendon problem by adding that a scan had showed that the injury had "completely healed".
Bolt's only other defeat in the 100m came at the same Stockholm Olympic track in 2008 when Jamaican compatriot Powell - who is also now struggling with a back complaint - took victory.
Since that reversal, Bolt enjoyed 14 successive wins, including the last time he clashed with Gay at the Berlin World Championships last year.
He has also clocked the season's joint fastest time in the 100m (9.82 in Lausanne) and fastest in the 200m (19.56 in Kingston).

Martin O'Neill has resigned as Aston Villa manager with immediate effect.
Kevin MacDonald has been appointed caretaker boss while no reason has been given for O'Neill's decision to leave after four years in the job.
MacDonald will prepare the side for their Premier League opener against West Ham on Saturday.
O'Neill, appointed in 2006, said: "I have enjoyed my time at Aston Villa immensely. It's obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent club."
The 58-year-old O'Neill, who led Villa to their third successive sixth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, added: "I would like to pay tribute to the Villa players, my coaching staff and the Villa supporters for all the support and encouragement they have given both the club and me personally during my time as manager.
"I wish them all the best for the future. I will obviously be assisting the club in the immediate short-term with regard to the handover of my duties."
In May, Villa owner Randy Lerner insisted O'Neill had pledged his future to Villa in after much speculation over whether or not the former Celtic boss would quit.
Northern Irishman O'Neill has transformed the fortunes of Villa since replacing David O'Leary in August 2006, culminating in an appearance in the final of last season's Carling Cup, their first Wembley final for 10 years.
Lerner had backed O'Neill in the transfer market during that spell but it became clear this summer that similar investment would not be forthcoming.
Lerner insisted that Villa would have to adopt a sell-to-buy policy and O'Neill was resigned to losing the services of midfielder James Milner to Manchester City. Former skipper Gareth Barry also moved to Eastlands last year.
Former Wycombe, Leicester and Celtic boss O'Neill indicated before the weekend that he was keen to speak to Lerner over how much cash he would make available from the Milner move.
When asked how much he would have to spend on new players, O'Neill said: "I need to speak to the chairman [Lerner] and chief executive [Paul Faulkner] about that.
"For a number of days in this transfer saga with Manchester City, you have known my position in terms of what I have been advocating and thinking about."
It is unclear at this stage whether the response O'Neill received from the club's hierarchy led to his decision to end his four-year reign at the Midlands club.
Former England manager Graham Taylor, who had two spells as Villa manager, told BBC Sport he had been aware of some unrest at the club during the off-season.
"I'm shocked like everyone else even though I've been aware that behind the scenes that there has been a lack of togetherness," said Taylor, who was in charge at Villa Park between 1987-90 and 2002-03.
"Whether this has anything to do with James Milner and his possible transfer to Manchester City and the fact that we are led to believe that he may have to sell to buy, I don't know."
Taylor also urged Villa not to rush into appointing a replacement, with the likes of US coach Bob Bradley, Ajax boss Martin Jol and former England manager Sven Goran-Eriksson all being mentioned as potential successors.
"It is always a little bit dangerous to rush into appointing a new manager but especially as this is an acute time before the start of the season," added Taylor.
"It is a bad time to lose your manager before the start of the season and one has to be careful about who you appoint."
Faulkner said of O'Neill's departure: "The club would like to thank Martin for the great work he has done at Aston Villa over the past four years.
"He has helped to establish the club in the upper echelons of the Premier League, has taken us to Wembley and we have also qualified for European competition for the past three seasons under his management. We wish him the best in the future."
League Managers' Association chief executive Richard Bevan said: "The LMA shares Martin's disappointment at him leaving Aston Villa.
"He has achieved great success not just with Villa but throughout his managerial career. He is a great example to all aspiring managers having built the foundations in non-league football to then go on to successfully manage at the highest level in the game."
Former Villa captain Martin Laursen said he was not surprised that O'Neill left the club also adding that he did not think his departure would be followed by several players.
"He wanted more than Randy Lerner could give him," Laursen told BBC Sport.
"He is so ambitious that when he doesn't get what he wants he walks away. But I don't think more players will leave.
"If Martin O'Neill gets another important job then he might take some with him but I don't think players will leave because O'Neill has gone."

Mark Hughes was tonight confirmed as Fulham's new manager after agreeing a two-year deal.
Fulham had been seeking a replacement for Roy Hodgson since he swapped Craven Cottage for Anfield earlier this summer, and failed in a bid to prise Martin Jol from Ajax.
Former Manchester City boss Hughes emerged as the frontrunner after talks with the Dutchman ran their course, and he will begin work at the club immediately, taking charge of his first match in the friendly meeting with Werder Bremen on August 7.
Hughes acknowledged the success Hodgson enjoyed at the club - most notably taking them to the Europa League final last season - but has already set out his own blueprint for taking them forward.
Hughes told www.fulhamfc.com: "I have discussed my aspirations with both the chairman and (chief executive) Alistair Mackintosh and believe that we are aligned in our aims for what can realistically be achieved here.
"I am joining on the back of two of the most successful seasons in the club's history and that in itself brings with it the challenges of expectation and ambition.
"I am confident that with some additions to the squad, hard work and commitment, we can move this club forward in the right direction.
"I hope the Fulham fans will enjoy some special times during this season's campaign and we will work hard to achieve that.
"I'm looking forward to working with the squad as soon as possible, and in making sure the on-pitch preparations are complete before the first competitive ball is kicked in August."
Hughes, who will be presented to the media on Tuesday, began his transition from highly-decorated player to manager when he took charge of the Welsh national team in 1999.
He won praise for his efforts in the role, although he could not quite steer them to the major championships the nation desired.
He resigned his post in 2004, taking over at the club where he had ended his playing days, Blackburn.
From there he was appointed Manchester City boss, enjoying an 18-month stay at Eastlands during which he had greatly increased funds but also hugely inflated expectations.
The latter eventually proved his undoing and he has been out of work since leaving City in December.
His new employer, chairman Mohammad Al Fayed, said tonight: "I would like to welcome Mark Hughes to Fulham. I know that he understands my vision for the club, and believes in what we want achieve.
"We have enjoyed two incredibly successful years, and my hopes and dreams for this club are for that journey to continue. I am confident that with his Premier League and national team successes Mark will be a great guy for the job."

Asafa Powell's injury may have delayed the race of the season but Usain Bolt and Tyson Gay said yesterday that they still expect a fast 100 metres race at today's Diamond League meet in Stockholm at 1:57 p.m. Ja time.
The three fastest men in the world were due to face each other for the first time this year at the DN Galan, but Powell withdrew on Wednesday evening after failing to shake off a lower-back injury.
"It's sad because I think people were really looking forward to the three of us (racing)," Bolt said. "But it's still going to be a quick time."
Bolt said that in the absence of Powell, he is still wary of the threat that Gay poses.
"In Jamaica a lot of people have been seeing me and saying 'you can't let Tyson beat you'," Bolt said.
Powell said that he had been looking forward to facing his close rivals again. The Jamaican said that he sustained the injury three weeks ago, and is unsure when he will be able to compete again next.
Powell disappointed
"Since the start of the year, this was the race that I've been looking out for," Powell said. "I've been very excited about it, so I'm very disappointed because I want to go out there and run against Usain and Tyson."
Gay said that he had mentally prepared himself to face both of the Jamaicans in the 100 metres final at the ancient Olympic stadium.
"It put a little damper on it, but it's just as big a race," Gay said. "I know I'm going to need to run my best to even be in the camera shot."
Olympic champion Bolt and Powell share this season's best time of 9.82 seconds.
Bolt set the current world record of 9.58 the last time the three met on the track, at the World Champion-ships in Berlin last August.
As well as his performances, Bolt's reputation as a showman has made him a huge draw in the Scandinavian capital. Hundreds of fans waited for hours at a city park to catch a glimpse of the Jamaican when he signed autographs for local children at an athletics clinic on Wednesday.
The big three's faces adorn the event T-shirts on sale in the city, inevitably overshadowing many of the other matchups, in what is the 11th meeting of the Diamond League's inaugural season.
aiming for historic success
European champion Blanka Vlasic of Croatia faces silver medallist Emma Green of Sweden and American Chaunte Howard-Lowe in the women's high jump.
Howard-Lowe is also going to do one long jump prior to the high jump competition, to try to reach her ambition of being the only woman to jump both two metres in the high jump and seven metres in the long jump.
In the high jump, Howard-Lowe said she expects fierce competition from Green.
"I think it's great for the meet that the hometown girl really has a shot at taking this thing," Howard-Lowe said.
In addition to Bolt, there will be several other Jamaicans who will be competing at the meet. They include Novlene Williams-Mills and Shericka Williams in the women's 400 metres, Korene Hinds in the 3000 metres steeple-chase and Isa Phillips, who will face a strong field in the men's 400-metre hurdles.Midfielder Guti has announced he is leaving Real Madrid after 15 seasons with the Spanish club and is weighing up an offer from Turkish club Besiktas.
The former Spain international, 33, who had one year remaining on his contract, joined Madrid's youth set-up in 1985.
"I am leaving with the knowledge that the Real Madrid family loves me and that's very important," said Guti.
"It wasn't an easy decision. But I have a good offer from Besiktas, an interesting one, now we'll see."
Of Real's current squad, only striker Raul has been at the club longer than Guti, who made his first-team debut in 1995 and has gone on to make 542 appearances, scoring 86 goals.
He helped Real win five La Liga and three Champions League titles.
"They're a lot of years and many (were) complicated but in the end I managed to achieve the most important things," added Guti. "So many years here... an unforgettable stage (of my life)."
Along with Raul, who will make an emotional exit from the Bernabeu on Monday at a farewell media conference, with reports suggesting the 33-year-old will join German club Schalke, Guti is an iconic figure at Real.
"He is a special player who managed to surprise us in every game," said managing director Jorge Valdano, who gave Guti his first call-up as coach. "A true Madridista. Today is a sad day because one of our own is leaving."
Should Guti move to Besiktas he will be coached by his former Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster.
Shelton was compared by the Barca coach to another famous Jamaican...
Luton Shelton caught the eye of Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola during Thursday evening's friendly encounter between Valerenga and the Blaugrana.
Seemingly finished with the Norwegian club only 12 months ago, the 24-year-old attacker caused a fringe Barca side many problems due to his speed and movement, and Guardiola was quick to recognise the threat the attacker presented.
"Luton Shelton was extremely fast," the coach told Aftenposten. "He is from Jamaica, so maybe he is the son of Usain Bolt!"
"The team had good midfielders, but we knew that already. We saw two videos of Valerenga and knew what the players [Mohammed] Fellah and [Harmeet] Singh are capable of. We thought the Norwegian team just hit long passes, but they played well. Moa is also a very good player."
Barcelona won the fixture 4-2, despite deploying few first team squad members.
