Boom Boom - Laranzo Dacres

Alliance selector Boom Boom, real name Marlon Wizard, was attacked and robbed early yesterday morning, after successfully closing off another session of the popular Uptown Mondays dance, at Savannah Plaza, Constant Spring Road.

The selector, who had to be rushed to the hospital, said that the assault was carried out by affiliates of singjay Blak Ryno; after a CD that was sent to be played by the Tell It To Dem artiste was not played.

"Mi did a play and mi si a youth come wid a CD an seh Ryno a beg mi fi play a song. Mi seh alright," Boom Boom said.

"Di dance did soon finish and mi did deh pan di sound top, about 20 yards from Harry Hype (mixing partner). Caw a di 'ramest' Uptown Mondays had ever been, from summer start. And at the end mi neva get fi play di song," he said.

He continued:"After everything done an sound pull dung, mi a talk wid Harry, Foota and Sadeke dem, and the same yute come back and seh Ryno seh him waa back di CD."

two girls

He then said that he returned the CD. The man that was accompanied by two girls told Boom Boom that they wanted to take a photo with him. He complied and proceeded outside to have the photos taken by a photographer.

"When mi a walk guh out deh, mi nuh si di photographer. Den di same yute tell mi seh Ryno a shout mi, an him deh ova di parking lot. Suh mi a walk wid dem a guh link Ryno. Mi an Ryno nuh have nutten, and di world know," he said.

Adding, "Mi naa pree seh me an nuh man in a vibes, caw if a suh mi alone naa guh walk. When mi a walk towards di parking lot, a one lick mi feel inna mi head back. From mi get di lick inna mi head back mi nuh memba nutten, mi just memba when dem a put mi inna di car an people a bawl," he said.

The selector said that it was when he regained consciousness, he was made aware of what had transpired.

"Mi si Sadeke dem an some oda people a bawl and when mi ask dem a wah, dem seh a beat di man dem just beat mi up dawg! A when mi feel mi face an look inna di mirror, mi realise seh mi face did swell up," he said.

Boom Boom says he was also robbed of US$630.00 (J$53,915) that was in his pocket. After the incident, he was rushed to the University Hospital of the West Indies where he was then treated and released.

"Mi nah preach nuh violence enuh, mi forgive him, and mi naa guh retaliate," Boom Boom told THE STAR. "Mi lef it to God, caz a God mi praise."

When THE STAR contacted Blak Ryno for a comment on the matter, his phones went straight to voicemail. However, his publicist, who is known as Shadow, spoke on his behalf, as the singjay was said to be in a recording session.

"Ryno said that yes he was at the venue with a couple of friends, but for a short period of time. After which, he left and went straight home," Shadow said.

"He said it was brought to his knowledge that he was involved in an altercation with Boom Boom, which he categorically denied."

"He said that he has been to events prior to this, where Boom Boom played his songs, so he had no reason to do anything of this nature," Shadow stated.

Boom Boom, however, says "mi waa di whole Jamaica know seh mi good an mi alright, mi just a tell Ryno seh mi a pray fi him, caw him need some prayer an him need fi read him Bible ... caw him a likkle yute weh mi check fa an rate. An me will still play him song dem as long as the people dem waa hear him song dem, caz a music mi seh."

A hungry, orphaned calf feeds from an Indian villager, Couthi Bai's breasts.

Bai breastfeeds the 46-year-old calf three to four times a day.

She said: "After her mother died, I held her in my arms and breastfed her. I nurtured her by feeding her my milk. She was so young when the cow died. For me, there is no dofference between a calf and an infant."

Other residents of the village of Kilchu do not seem pay much attention.

Another villager said: "It's the first time this has happened in our village. Whenever she goes to the fields she takes the calf along. Like our mother brought us up by feeding us her milk., similarly, she is nourishing the calf with her milk.

Arsenal Football Club today made its third signing of the summer, as French international defender, Sebastien Squillaci joins the north London club from Sevilla, on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

Part of the France 2010 World Cup squad, Squillaci (30) is a tall, strong and vastly experienced central defender who has made 36 appearances in the Champions League, Europe's premier club competition, as well as tallying 21 caps for his country.

Prior to his time in Spain, Squillaci enjoyed a successful spell in France with Lyon by winning back-to-back Ligue 1 titles in 2007 and 2008. The combative defender was also part of AS Monaco's impressive Champions League campaign in 2004, helping the side reach the Final by beating Real Madrid and Chelsea en route.

Sebastien Squillaci said on his arrival at Arsenal: "This is an exciting move for me. Arsène Wenger is a highly respected coach who I am very much looking forward to working with and of course, I know some of the Arsenal players through the national team. Arsenal is recognised as a side that not only plays beautiful football but one that challenges for trophies at the highest level and I am very excited to be joining such a fantastic club."

Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger added: "Sebastien has many qualities that will add to the strength of our squad. He is quick, hugely experienced with an aggressive edge to his game. His signing will give us some variation at the back as we look to build on last season's campaign and fight for silverware this year."

Squillaci will wear the number 18.

Tottenham's last-ditch bid to sign Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid was nearly dead in the water just five minutes before the transfer window deadline, Goal.com UK can reveal.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is confident that the Dutch international will be joining the club in an £8 million switch even though they are waiting on clearance before officially announcing his arrival.

But Goal.com UK understands that Spurs and Real Madrid had initially agreed that the 27-year-old would move to White Hart Lane on a season-long loan.

The Spanish giants then pulled the plug on the deal at 5.55pm and told the Londoners that the deal was dead.

However, chairman Daniel Levy made an improved offer to take the playmaker to Spurs, which was then accepted by Madrid. It now requires ratification from the Premier League, with a Spurs source telling Goal.com UK that they are hopeful it will be rubber-stamped tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Fulham inquired about taking David Bentley to Craven Cottage on a season-long loan but the two clubs could not come to agreement over terms.

Redknapp, who said he was contacted by Levy about Van der Vaarts availability at 4pm, admits the agreement was rushed through with the 6pm deadline fast approaching and he is uncertain as to whether everything was completed in time.

"It's still dragging on. We are just waiting to see whether it's all gone through," Redknapp said to Sky Sports News.

"We are waiting for clearance. The chairman is dealing with it and Darren Eales, the secretary, there is nothing more I can do now."

Redknapp revealed he turned his attention to Van der Vaart, who took part in this summer's World Cup final, once it became apparent that Real Madrid were prepared to part with him in a cut-price deal.

"I think he was going to Bayern Munich yesterday for about £18m, but suddenly it became an awful lot cheaper," added the Spurs boss.

"He is available now for about £8m. He is a quality player. He is a Dutch international and a great footballer.

"For that sort of money, he is a top player and he will improve us for sure. We have made the effort, whether we can pull it off or not we will have to see.

"I am hopeful. It could happen. It was a last-minute job. When I came in this morning it certainly wasn't something I was looking to do."

On the attributes Van der Vaart would bring to Tottenham, Redknapp said: "He is a great passer of the ball, he is a top footballer. He will join in here and play the way we like to play, he would be a big plus for us.

"He looked like he was going for £18m but then the fee came crashing down because the deadline got close. If the chairman can pull it off, I think he will have got a real bargain."

Redknapp also admitted that Tottenham had made a late bid to sign Ryan Babel from Liverpool, as exclusively revealed by Goal.com UK.

He said: "We were interested in Ryan Babel. He has got pace, he is lighting quick and he was a player we made an inquiry for, but we never got that close."

It's rare to get a glimpse of the often private life of Jay-Z and Beyonce. The two have given the media little ammunition since the start of their relationship, offering very few words about their courtship and their marriage. However, recently Beyonce spoke with UK's Daily Mail about potentially starting a family with Jay, admitting that it's difficult to find a balance at times.

"For me, balance is always really hard to find. I love so many different things, and to have the discipline to turn certain things away and focus on one thing at a time so that I can give it 100 percent is really hard," she noted. "Probably the biggest challenge in my life is time making sure I have time to be a wife, to be a singer, to be a songwriter, to be an actor and still have time for my clothing line and now for my perfume. I am like any other woman who has a child, who has a husband, who has a job. I think its the hardest thing about being a woman because we have so many responsibilities."

She mentioned "child," so when pressed about a family, due to recent rumors about her being pregnant, she responded by saying the time will come, but she gave no official dates or confirmations.

"My ambition is to continue to learn about the world and to eventually have a family," she said. "No dates, no times - it will happen when I am ready."

Beyonce is currently promoting her new perfume, Heat.
Singjay Mavado and international superstar Drake are in the midst of building a learning center in Cassava Piece.

4527224449_d170b55269_o.jpg

When THE WEEKEND STAR spoke with Mavado's manager Julian Jones-Griffith he explained that two weeks ago Drake donated US$25,000 (JA$2.15 million) towards the building of the library. The popular rapper shot the video for his latest single Find Our Love in Jamaica in April. The rapper also visited the island prior to that for vacation.

Jones-Griffith explained: "Basically Mavado and Drake shot some scenes in Cassava Piece and struck up an immediate rapport with the people there. He thought they showed him a lot of love and he was very down to earth with them and wanted to do something positive."

The idea for the learning center which includes a computer lab and a library, according to Jones-Griffith, was one Mavado had plans for so Drake decided to assist the project.

When THE WEEKEND STAR spoke to Drake he commented: "I had a great time when I was in Jamaica and the people of Cassava Piece showed me a lot of love. I just wanted to show back some love by helping out with Mavado's project on the Gullyside. It's a very positive move and something I am very happy to be a part of. Education is the key to life so to be able to assist in that process is very fulfilling."

Two weeks ago Drake gave Mavado his contribution and since then construction has started in Cassava Piece. Jones-Griffith added: "Obviously it's going to take more than what Drake gave so Mavado has contributed to it and pledges to put more towards it." Tentatively the name for the library is 'Drake and Mavado Peace Center'.

Mavado said: "I was born and grow inna Cassava Piece so mi always a look to impact di community in a positive way. We recently helped create peace between rival communities dat is going good, so we want to do sumpten new. We have been planning it for a while, when Drake was here it came up an he wanted to do sumpten to help and we mek di arrangements."

He added: "We're grateful for his contribution, it's a great gesture, he is not even a Jamaican, so for him to do dis and help build a foundation of knowledge and learning in our community is, yuh nuh, appreciated. Odda successful Jamaicans should tek a leaf out of Drake's book and gi back to di communities from weh dem born and grow."

For Mavado and his team they are looking to Corporate Jamaica to assist in the project. Jones-Griffith said: "We're reaching out to Corporate Jamaica which is always talking about transforming the garrison so it's time for them to put their money where their mouth is. LIME has already pledged to give us free Internet connection and we appreciate that."

The learning centre will be free of cost to persons from Cassava Piece as Jones-Griffith explained: "It's a community project not a business venture. People from the community are contributing to it from the ground up and are very happy about it."

Mavado has turned a peaceful leaf of late with a number of socially-conscious musical releases of late including: Messiah, Change Right Now and Can't Believe.

Women cause laughter in court

September 1, 2010
Started By jubalson2 Comments

The Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court enjoyed moments of amusement yesterday when two neighbours, a 45-year-old woman and the other, a 50-year-old woman, faced the court in a case and cross case.

The two women, Karen Henry and Sheila Ferguson, seemed unsure at first of what their respective pleas would be for the charge of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Such uncertainty was displayed when the clerk of courts asked both the accused alternatively, to identify the person who had assaulted her, both the co-accused then pointed at each other almost at the same time, which amused the court.

guilty plea

Ferguson then told the court that she wanted to plead guilty to avoid prolonging the matter. Likewise, Henry then immediately told the court that she wanted to enter a guilty plea also, which again amused the court.

Both women told the court that they received scratches to their bodies as a result of the fracas.

Both co-accused were fined $4,000 each or 30 days in prison.

No records were requested in the matter, in that, the convictions are not to be recorded.

Jamaica's young sprint star, 20 year-old Yohan Blake, clipped American Justin Gatlin in the men's 100 metres at the Palio della Quercia meet in Rovereto, Italy, yesterday.

Blake clocked 10.06 seconds to finish three-hundredths of a second ahead of the American who was clocking his best time since his recent return from a four-year doping ban.

A second Jamaican, Marvin Anderson, was fourth in 10.48. The race was marred by the disqualification of two runners - Ryan Bailey of the United States and Fabio Cerutti of Italy - for false starts.

Gatlin said he injured himself slightly during the race.

"It was a good practice for me and I bettered my time as well," Gatlin said. "I tweaked my quad just a little bit coming home and had to slow a little bit but all in all it was a good race, going against good competitors."

Gatlin added that he hopes to go under 10 seconds at his next meet in Padua on Friday.

"Every time I run I get faster, I get more comfortable with myself, I get more comfortable with my race, so I still think I pose some kind of a threat in the long (run)," Gatlin said. It was a one-two finish for Jamaica in the men's 100 metres "B" race. Former national junior representative Romeldo Rose who is making a comeback after being dogged by several injuries in recent years, captured the event in 10.46 seconds , getting the better of another former junior representative, Ramone McKenzie, 10.47.

In the women's 100 metres Aleen Bailey of Jamaica was fourth in 11.29 seconds behind winner, Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago, who won in 11.13.

In the men's 400 metres, Jamaica's Allodin Fothergill clocked 46.04 seconds for fifth as the one-lap event was won in 45.77 by Italy's Marco Vistalli.

In the women's 800 metres World champion Caster Semenya of South Africa finished a surprising ninth.

In her fifth race following an 11-month gender dispute, Semenya clocked a dismal 2 minutes, 7.16 seconds.

Elisa Cusma Piccione of Italy, who openly questioned Semenya's gender at last year's worlds in Berlin, won in 2:00.37.

It's Semenya's second consecutive loss after she placed third at the Diamond League meet in Brussels on Friday.

Semenya stood third to last after the first lap and never made a move to the front, giving the impression she was just out for a casual jog.

"Nothing happened. I ran the race, I ran slow. Nothing happened. It's part of the game," Semenya said. "Sometimes you need to go according to your body."

Afterward, Semenya walked over to Cusma Piccione and congratulated the Italian.

"It was a nice gesture," Cusma Piccione said. "I know she hasn't trained much and it's not easy to keep up your form. Maybe she's tired."

Cusma Piccione called Semenya "a man" when she lost to her at worlds.

Residents in sections of Clarendon have, in recent times, been gripped with the fear of being robbed while travelling on mini-buses, THE STAR has learnt.

A number of recent incidents have now left persons from various communities in the parish to consider their options before deciding to use that mode of transportation.

"We are aware of a number of cases in which men have robbed people on these buses and we also are hearing that persons are somewhat afraid to travel on these buses," a detective corporal attached to the Area Three police said when THE STAR contacted the headquarters yesterday. According to the lawman, he was aware of at least three incidents in the last two weeks.

Head of the Clarendon police, Superintendent Dathan Henry could not be reached for comment as several calls to his cellular phone went unanswered.

In one of the latest such incidents, gunmen reportedly robbed passengers and the conductor on a bus which was travelling from May Pen to Frankfield.

The bus is said to have also overturned when the driver jumped from the vehicle after being attacked by one of the robbers.

One passenger who witnessed the ordeal, Mrs Lucky* said being a part of the incident has left her shaken up to say the least.

According to Lucky, a woman came into the bus asking the driver to make a stop in Bucknor, also in the parish, to pick up a girlfriend.

After stopping at the bus stop where the woman's friend was supposed to have been waiting, Lucky said the driver was asked to drive through a lane to pick up the other woman. While a number of passengers objected, Lucky told THE STAR that the woman got off the bus and walked down the lane.

As the driver began to drive off, Lucky said three armed men jumped into the bus and ordered the driver to stop which he did.

cash and other items

Lucky said two of the men then ordered a number of passengers and the conductor off the bus before proceeding to rob them of cash and other items. Things got a little more scary, according to Lucky, when the driver tried to escape the situation not realising that the third robber was still on the bus.

She said the thief attacked the driver and stabbed him in the head. The driver is said to have then jumped from the bus which lost control and overturned.

Lucky said she climbed out of the bus and was greeted by the thief who attacked the driver. The robber took her cellphone she told THE STAR.

The incident was reported to the May Pen police who say investigations are ongoing and it is being theorised that the robbery was planned. Lucky agrees. "The girl came from the same area as the gunmen, the whole thing was false, she was trying to get the driver to go in the lane where they could rob us." she reasoned. Meanwhile, the detective corporal from the Area Three police said the police will be working towards locating the men responsible for these incidents.

Nicki Minaj - Contributed

It seems that a collaboration between deejay Vybz Kartel and American rapper Nicki Minaj is not out of the question for the near future.

Last Saturday, the rapper, who is known for songs such as Your Love and Bedrock, posted on her official social- networking page twitter.com that she wants to work with the controversial deejay. Minaj tweeted, "I need Vybz Kartel for Pink Friday." Pink Friday is the official name of her debut album which is scheduled for release on November 23 on the Young Money-Universal Motown label.

ready to work

When contacted by THE STAR, Kartel was unaware of her desire to work with him but was more than ready to work with the rapper. He said, "I would definitely do it. No charge, just work out something in the Rampin' Shop. Although every female artiste wants to collab with the Teacha, for all I know that could be a fake tweet, a prank tweet. If she really want to do di, tell her me deh pon di Gaza."

unofficial collabo

Minaj has worked with Jamaican artistes before, with her unofficial collaboration with Gyptian on the Billboard chart-topping hit Hold Yuh. The remix was popular on youtube.com and garnered a lot of attention. The rapper was in Jamaica earlier this year with Jamaican singer Sean Kingston to shot the video for their song Letting Go (Dutty Love) in Ocho Rios.

In the meantime, the normally media-friendly Vybz Kartel has been quiet in the weeks since his arrest during the state of emergency that was implemented in Kingston after the siege in Tivoli.

According to Kartel, he has been busy in the studio with a number of releases. He said, "I have singles No Lie and Taptada for DJ Kareem, Conscience Set Yuh FreeMaking A Baby for Notnice. Plus I just finished the Dream video with Popcaan to premiere this Friday on ER and I am now doing a video for Chrome's Dumpa Truck. Popcaan and Sheba are off to Trinidad on Friday, Gaza Slim just wrecked Tobago and I'll be at Club Jamaica this Saturday with the usual suspects."

ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) Tyson Gay is expecting "one of the fastest races" of the year when he comes up against Nesta Carter of Jamaica at a Zagreb meet tomorrow, with both sprinters having set the lowest 100-metre time in 2010.

The American ran 9.78 seconds in London on August 13, and Carter matched that time at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy on Sunday.

Gay beat world-record holder Usain Bolt earlier this month. He said yesterday that his ultimate aim is to win gold at next year's World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Gay says "I'm sure Bolt wants it too. But if I do my absolute best, I could beat him."

Top 10 Italian Badboys Of All Time

August 31, 2010
Started By jubalson2 Comments

With enfant terrible Mario Balotelli completing his big-money transfer from Inter to Manchester City, Goal.com look at 10 of Italian footballs most controversial characters over the years

10) Giorgio Chinaglia

Chinaglia was so big in Rome that stories about the Pope would be relegated to page three of the local papers in order to make way for Long John. The striker scored 98 goals at Lazio between 1969 and 1976, and was the main reason for their 1974 Scudetto triumph, firing home a whopping 24 and winning the Capoacannoniere crown.

A beast of a frontman, Chinaglia was also a controversial character, and eventually this cost him his Italy career. During a World Cup clash with Haiti, Chinaglia was substituted and cursed at coach Ferruccio Valcareggi. He then proceeded to trash the changing room, reportedly smashing up eight water bottles. This act of aggression basically ended his international career on just 14 caps and four goals. He later moved to the USA to play for the New York Cosmos, where the problems continued - including a falling out with team-mate Pele.

9) Christian Vieri

A touchy character both on-and-off the pitch. In his prime, at the turn of the new millennium, Vieri was the best striker in the world before a stunning collapse after Euro 2004. The recently retired 6ft 1in hitman endured an unpleasant relationship with the press during his career, rarely giving interviews, and once telling the media that he was more of a man than all of you put together.

He sulked his way out of Inter, refusing to even celebrate goals, before launching legal proceedings on his former club after they illegally spied on him as part of their Calciopoli investigation. Vieris love life has been equally chaotic, having worked his way through pretty much every Italian showgirl including beauties such as Elisabetta Canalis and Melissa Satta.

8) Francesco Flachi

One of many talented forwards on this list who couldnt control off-field vices. In 2006, Flachi was banned for two months for illegal gambling before then receiving a two year suspension the following year for cocaine use.

After returning in 2009, it didnt take long for Flachi to be caught again as in December of the same year he tested positive for cocaine once more. This time he was handed a 12-year ban, thus ending his careerunless he plans to continue professional football at the age of 47!

7) Pasquale Bruno

The most infamous hardman of Italian football after Claudio Gentile retired, Bruno was nicknamed The Animal due to his uncompromising style of defending. The ex-Juventus, Torino and Lecce man was once suspended for eight games after physically attacking a referee and all his team-mates who tried to intervene. Bruno was capable of some X-rated tackles and received many cards during his career. He became a cult hero at Scottish side Hearts, infamously once making a cut-throat sign to the entire Hibernian bench after kicking an opposition player in the kidney.

Bruno has continued his no-nonsense approach after retiring with some contentious press quotes. He recently slammed modern footballers as fighetti (fairies) who only care about earrings, tattoos, nightclubs and shopping, and said if he was still playing now he would teach Zlatan Ibrahimovic a lesson

6) Omar Sivori

Sivori will be remembered as one of Juventus and Serie As greatest ever players, but also as one of the most hot-headed. The 1961 European Footballer of the Year was sent off 10 times during seven years at Juve and regularly was involved in confrontations with opponents and referees. His favoured move was the nutmeg, which he used to humiliate defenders, and he was the ultimate representation of South American furbo with a crafty and underhand approach towards the game.

The Maradona of the sixties left the Bianconeri in 1965 after a ferocious falling out with coach Heriberto Herrera, and in his final ever career game for Napoli for whom he also suffered many suspensions - against the Bianconeri he was banned for six games for a violent kick on Erminio Favalli.

5) Marco Materazzi

One of the most disliked and misunderstood footballers on the planet, Materazzi was considered as an untalented brute for most of his career pre-2006. His histrionics, and pouting facial expressions, not to mention his tough-tackling and elbow-leaning aerial challenges, made him an enemy for purists.

Zidane_headbutt.jpg

But, in the summer of 2006, Materazzi had the best three weeks of his life, performing brilliantly as a replacement for the injured Alessandro Nesta as Italy won the World Cup. Even then, his heroics which included scoring the equaliser and a shootout penalty in the final were overshadowed by his part in the Zinedine Zidane sending off. Zizou, in his final career game, was red carded in extra time for headbutting Matrix after a family insult. Materazzi, perhaps due to his past record, was painted as the villain and banned by FIFA for two games. Most recently, the ex-Everton stopper sported a Silvio Berlusconi mask to celebrate Inter's derby win over Milan.

4) Mario Balotelli

Despite still being a teenager, the Sicilian-born striker of Ghanaian immigrants has managed to fall out with almost every team-mate, opponent, coach, fan and official he has crossed paths with. Balotellis many controversial quotes include labelling himself a second class citizen, slamming Cristiano Ronaldo as someone he cant stand, and openly admitting that he supports Milan, even wearing the Rossoneri shirt on television.

Super Mario was repeatedly frozen out of the Inter squad by former coach Jose Mourinho, and the forward was even told to leave San Siro by his own supporters after infamously throwing the Inter shirt onto the ground after the 3-1 Champions League semi final first leg win over Barcelona last season.

3) Paolo Di Canio

One of the greatest ever Italians not to play for Italy, along with the likes of Evaristo Beccalossi and Agostino Di Bartolomei, there is no doubt that Di Canios red-hot Roman temper cost him a chance to don the prestigious Azzurri jersey.

Di Canio was sold by Juventus after a fight with coach Giovanni Trapattoni, while his time at Sheffield Wednesday was marred by one of the most infamous moments in English football history when he pushed referee Paul Al**** to the ground after being sent off against Arsenal. This earned him an 11-match ban. Before that he had also fought with manager Ron Atkinson, and was once issued two yellow cards, and thus a red, for arguing over the award of a throw-in. Di Canio became a legend at West Ham, but hit the headlines after returning to his beloved Lazio when he made a Roman salute to the Ultras. One hell of a character!

2) Claudio Gentile

One of the meanest and toughest defenders to ever set foot onto the field, strikers used to melt in their boots when up against Gentile. The stopper is notorious for violently man-marking Diego Maradona out of the game during the 1982 World Cup, while he also ripped Brazilian great Zicos shirt in half during the same tournament. Argentina 1978 hero Mario Kempes said of Gentile: "If you went to the toilet, Gentile would follow you there."

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTICTuqljHCtH2dAgcuSJhap4RuVZwEqfooEJi3N0Fb6iwxY3c&t=1&usg=__GcD312u1TJFn2M9W-yVRSfM_tpA=

Gentile won six Scudetti for Juventus and is certainly a cult hero. An urban myth tells of a story when English striker Kevin Keegan had been named as European Footballer of the Year. At the ceremony, Keegan got up off his chair to walk towards the stage in order to collect his prize but was tripped up by Gentile as he moved through the aisle. Gentile then reputedly whispered into Keegans ear: You wouldnt have won no award if I had been marking you!

An intimidator of infamous proportions, Gentile often executed the tackle from behind, while another of his tricks was to dig his nails into forwards hands while helping them up off the floor with this offence thus hidden from the referee. They dont make defenders like Gentile any more!

1) Antonio Cassano

Born the day after Italy won the 1982 World Cup, El Pibe de Bari was hailed as the most talented player of his generation after bursting onto the scene as a 17-year-old with a wondergoal for hometown side Bari against Inter. However, he has never truly reached his God-given potential due to an explosively flawed personality.

Cassano details most of his mischief of the past 10 years in his infamous autobiography titled Vi Dico Tutto (Ill tell you everything). Fantantonio talks of all his falling outs with coaches such as Luciano Spalletti, whom he told: Youre not coaching those useless players you had at Udinese, this isnt your house, its my house, Fabio Capello, of whom he noted: In Tarragona he made me and Ronaldo warm up the whole second half without putting us in. In the locker room I told him youre a piece of sh*t, youre more fake than Monopoly money, and Luigi Del Neri who Cassano never understood what the fu*k he was talking about.

Cassano also explained how he had slept with between 600 and 700 women by the age of 25, and that at Real Madrid he would pay off a young waiter to bring him cakes after illegally smuggling a girl into his hotel room before matches. Cassano was handed a five game ban in 2008 after throwing his shirt at a referee, while there are reports that he punched Marcello Lippis son Davide in a nightclub, thus leading to his exclusion from the 2010 World Cup squad. Yet another urban myth is that Cassano stole a moped in his village, days after signing his multi-million pound contract with Roma. He obviously couldn't afford to buy one!

Top 10 Wrong Pele Predictions

August 31, 2010
Started By jubalson2 Comments

Pele's prediction that Italy would beat Brazil on Sunday night went spectacularly wrong as the Selecao won 3-0. Every Tuesday, Goal.com publishes a new Top 10 - this week it is the Top 10 Wrong Pele Predictions...

Pele may have been one of the greatest players in the history of the game, having been part of three victorious World Cup teams in 1958, 1962 and 1970, but, since retiring, he has become less respected as a pundit off-the-pitch.

The Brazilian is infamous for his numerous wrong predictions over the years. Romario once declared that "Pele is a poet when he keeps his mouth shut", while coach Luiz Felipe Scolari delivered the legendary line, "I believe Pele knows nothing about football. His analysis always turns out to be wrong. If you want to win a title, you have to listen to Pele and then do the opposite."

Some people have labelled Pele as a 'jinx', and his curse continued on Sunday night when he predicted that Italy would beat Brazil in the Confederations Cup. The Azzurri were thumped 3-0 as they were sent packing from the tournament, and indeed the scoreline could have been heavier as Dunga's men hit the woodwork on two further occasions.

In light-hearted celebration of 'The King', Goal.com have put together the Top 10 Wrong Pele Predictions.

10) China 2002

Pele Prediction: China will qualify for the next round from their 2002 World Cup group.

Outcome: China finish bottom of Group C with no wins, no draws, no points, no goals, as well as -9 in their goal-difference column.

9) Spain 1998

Pele Prediction: Spain are favourites for the 1998 World Cup in France.

Outcome: Spain humiliatingly dumped out in the first round after losing to Nigeria, and drawing with Paraguay.

Raul & Spain - Kings Of France '98?

8) Colombia To Live American Dream

Pele Prediction:
Colombia will win the 1994 World Cup in the USA.

Outcome:
Colombia exit the competition in the first round, finishing bottom of their group. Their defender Andres Escobar is also tragically shot dead by an angry fan after Colombia return home.

7) Argentina, France & World Cup 2002

Pele Prediction:
Argentina & France will both reach the final.

Outcome: Both countries eliminated in the first round, France without even scoring a goal.

6) Escape To Victory

Pele Prediction: During the famous film starring Sylvester Stallone and Michael Caine, Allies star Pele is brutally fouled in the first half by the Nazi opponents. The injured Brazilian claims there is no way he can continue and is carried off. The Allies are 4-0 down, and a recovery is deemed impossible.

Outcome: Pele returns in the second half and inspires his team to an improbable comeback, even scoring a stunning bicycle kick. Even in fiction, Pele's predictions go wrong.

5) Ronaldo Is Finished

Pele Prediction: Ronaldo will never play football again, and his career is over, following a serious injury for Milan in February 2008.

Outcome: Ronaldo returns in March 2009 for Corinthians, scoring 10 goals in his first 14 games to win the Campeonato Paulista. Rumoured to be on the verge of a national team recall.

Ronald-over

4) Nii Lamptey The New Pele

Pele Prediction:
After starring in the 1991 Under-17 World Cup, which also featured Alessandro Del Piero, Pele proclaims Ghana youngster Lamptey as his successor, The New Pele.

Outcome: What happens next goes down in football infamy. Lamptey spectacularly fails to fulfil his talent, believing himself that he was cursed by dark forces. The midfielder shifts around clubs such as PSV, Aston Villa, Coventry, Venezia and Ankaragucu, without success, and endures tragedy in his personal life, as two of his children die.

3) Nicky Barmby - Up There With Zidane, Maldini & Ronaldo

Pele Prediction: Nicky Barmby will become a world class star.

Outcome: Nicky Barmby becomes nothing more than an average player, winning 23 England caps, and never even appearing in a World Cup.

Nick Barmby - 'The English Roberto Baggio'

2) Africa Will Rule

Pele Prediction: An African nation will win the World Cup before the year 2000.

Outcome: It is now 2009, and an African country has still yet to get past the quarter-final.

1) Brazil & World Cup 2002

Pele Prediction:
Brazil wont even get past the group stages.

Outcome: Brazil win the World Cup.

An 88-year-old man who was the victim of an hour-long goat attack has died.

Vestal Davis of Colbert, in Madison County, died Saturday at Athens Regional Medical Center, one week after the attack, the Athens Banner-Herald reports.

"He became paralyzed from the injuries, and that just affected the rest of his body system," Coroner Michelle Cleveland told the newspaper. "He just couldn't fight that off and so he just slipped away."

Doctors say 20 J'cans die every day from heart-related diseases

THINK of all the things that can cause the death of a person -- from the simple slip and fall, to accidents, various forms of illnesses and murder. Add them, and they would still be dwarfed by the number of Jamaicans who die annually from complications related to cardiovascular illnesses, doctors from the Heart Institute of the Caribbean (HIC) told the weekly Observer Monday Exchange yesterday.

According to the doctors, cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills 20 Jamaicans every day. That works out to 7,300 people annually.

1killer_w370.jpg

A staggering 50 per cent of hospital deaths are cardiovascular-related, added Dr Dainia Baugh, president of the HIC.

"If you stack up every cause of death that's murder, to 'I tripped and fell and hit my head', you add HIV, add driving too fast and running off the road, you add 'I was pregnant and had a complication', pneumonia... If you add pretty much every cause of death that we know of, you will never reach the number of people that die from just cardiovascular diseases," said Dr Baugh.

In light of this fact, Dr Baugh is urging Jamaicans to get tested at an early age so they can be treated for any problem before it is too late. "You can be a day old and have problems, and you can be 105 and have problems," said Dr Baugh, noting that heart-related illnesses can hit at any stage of life.

Dr Baugh said that there are now more cases of people suffering from cardiovascular-related illnesses, such as blockages, in the 50s and 60s age group. She said also that there are persons in their 30s experiencing problems of the heart not relaxing after a beat as it should.

According to Dr Baugh, they are now seeing more cases of men getting heart attacks before they get to age 55 years, which had been a rear occurrence in the past. This, she said, is a deviation from international standards.

Dr Baugh said the cases being seen now should be occurring in people in their 70s, noting that the goal was to revert to that stage through public education campaigns and early screening.

Given the gravity of the situation, Dr Baugh, as well as Dr Edwin Tulloch-Reid, expressed disappointment that treatment for heart-related illnesses is the least funded in Jamaica.

The conditions that qualify as heart disease include coronary heart disease, heart attack, congestive heart failure and congenital heart disease. Risk factors for heart disease, according to information provided by the HIC Foundation, are smoking, high *la*hd pressure, high *la*hd cholesterol, obesity, physical inactivity and diabetes, which is also a prevalent illness among Jamaicans.

In addition to exercise, a healthy diet including a lower salt and fat intake -- is key to warding off heart-related complications. It is recommended that we consume more fish, vegetables, fruits, whole grain and legumes. If there is a need for added fats, it is recommended that we use those high in monounsaturated fats for example olive and peanut oils.

Dr Baugh said also that there is a need to cut the obesity rate among children as 20 per cent of overweight kids in Jamaica are diabetic, which increases their predisposition to heart diseases.

Seventy-one per cent of all diabetics die from cardiovascular disease, according to Dr Baugh. Statistics show that one of five Jamaicans is diabetic, according to Dr Baugh, who said that the number is set to triple in another five years and rise again by 2025.

Sunderlandhave completed the signing of Ghanaian internationalAsamoah Gyanin a deal believed to be a club record £13-plus million.

Gyan, who signed from French club Rennes, arrived in Sunderland yesterday to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical at the club.

He proved a star at this summer's World Cup and was part of the Ghana team that infamously lossed out to Uruguay in the quarter-final match in which Luis Suarez handled the ball on the goal-line.

The former Rennes striker missed a crucial penalty in that quarter-final and was distraught as he was consolled by team-mates after the match.

Gyan joins Sunderland with high expectations following his impressive showing in the World Cup and will look to link up with strike partner Darren Bent to fire Sunderland up the table.

Klaas Jan Huntelaar has become the first big-name player to make a deadline-day move, joining Schalke for £13million euros from AC Milan.

The Holland international, 27, joins former Real Madrid team-mate Raul, who signed earlier this summer, at the Gelsenkirchen.

Schalke boss Felix Magath told Bild newspaper: "Negotiations were tougher than expected. I am happy to have Klaas Jan. He will help us."

Huntelaar has failed to fully establish himself at first Real and then Milan since leaving Ajax in January 2009, scoring 15 goals in 50 appearances in that time.

But he was prolific during his time in Amsterdam, finding the net 80 times in 104 games after joining from Eerstedivisie side AGOVV Apeldoorn.

"Klaas Jan wants to continue his career at Schalke. Schalke and Milan have agreed on a transfer fee of about 13 million," read an article on his personal website.

"It is true I never wanted to leave Milan but that changed when Zlatan Ibrahimovic came from Barcelona," he said.

Schalke have moved to liven up their side after losing their opening two Bundesliga games of the season.

10) Jair (Inter 1962-67 & 68-71, Roma 67-68)

Lightning-paced attacking winger who won trophies galore during eight years at Inter. Despite being a backup to Garrincha at the triumphant 1962 World Cup, and earning just a single cap for the Selecao, Jair enjoyed a hugely successful club career. He won four Scudetti, and two European Cups, scoring the winner in the 1-0 victory over Benfica in 1965 Inters last success until the Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich in May.

9) Julinho (Fiorentina 1955-58)

Something of a forgotten figure outside of Florence, Julinho was voted as Fiorentinas greatest player of all time during the 1990s. The outrageously talented winger formed a stunning partnership with the equally legendary Miguel Montouri and was inspired in the famous 1956 Scudetto success and the run to the 1957 European Cup final where Fiorentina lost 2-0 to Alfredo Di Stefanos Real Madrid. Would have stayed longer in Italy but for family problems back home in Brazil, Julinho is regarded by Pele as one of the best players to ever grace the game.

8) Aldair (Roma 1990-2003)

Brazil have never been blessed with too many great center-backs over the years, however Aldair was one of them. In 13 superb seasons at Roma he made 415 appearances, winning the Scudetto in 2001 under Fabio Capello. Tall, strong and stylish, Aldair won 93 caps for the Brazil national team, playing at Italia 90, USA 94 and France 98, picking up a winners medal in the States. After he left Roma at the age of 37, the club retired his No.6 shirt in his honor.

7) Careca (Napoli 1987-93)

One of the worlds best strikers during the 1980s and early 90s, Careca signed for Napoli in 1987, and became part of the renowned Ma-gi-ca trio, also consisting of Diego Maradona and Bruno Giordano. A key factor in the 1990 Scudetto success, as well as the UEFA Cup victory the season prior where he scored in both legs of the final against Stuttgart. A prolific goalscorer with 73 strikes from 161 Napoli appearances, Careca also scored 29 times in 60 games for his country and starred in two World Cups.

6) Kaka (Milan 2003-09)

The Brazilian arrived in Serie A as a virtual unknown in 2003, but left it as one of the world's best players in 2009 - purchased by Real Madrid for 68.5 million. One of the most influential attacking midfielders, with the gliding motion of a downhill skier in full flow, the Brazilian's crowning moment was when he took home the 2007 Ballon d'Or after he was top scorer in the Champions League tournament with ten goals as Milan won the prestigious competition for the seventh time in their history. Overall he made 270 appearances for the Milanese giants, scoring 95 goals in all competitions.

5) Ronaldo (1997-2002, Milan 07-08)

10344_hp.jpg

The greatest first striker since at least the time of Marco Van Basten, one wonders just how good Ronaldo could have been were it not for injury and weight troubles. Upon his arrival at Inter from Barcelona, he took Serie A by storm during a time of Juventus dominance with an unstoppable blend of pace, power, skill and incomparable finishing with either foot or head. After tragically missing out on the Scudetto with Inter in 2002, a half-fit Ronaldo who had barely played for three years went to that summer's World Cup and scored eight goals as Brazil won the cup. At Real Madrid he fired home 83 goals in just 127 appearances between 2002 and 2007, before an injury hit 18 month return to San Siro with Milan which damaged his relationship with Inter fans.

4) Cerezo (Roma 1983-86, Sampdoria 86-92)

Cerezo was part of Romas finest ever squad during the early 1980s, playing with greats such as Falcao, Bruno Conti, Agostino Di Bartolomei and Roberto Pruzzo. The effortlessly elegant Brazilian midfielder played for Roma between 1983 and 1986, before he moved on to Sampdoria where he had another six successful years, winning the Scudetto in 1991. He was twice a losing finalist in the final of the European Cup, one with each of his teams, and was also part of the famed Brazil 1982 World Cup team.

3) Cafu (Roma 1997-2003, Milan 03-08)

One of Brazils all-time great wing-backs, who was nicknamed Il Pendolino (The Express Train) due to his indefatigable ability to run up and down the flank continuously for 90 minutes. Cafu played over 100 times in Serie A for Roma and was a key factor in their Scudetto success in 2001 before transferring to Milan at the age of 33 and enjoying another six fine seasons, winning another title and Champions League. He was also a star in international football, playing at four World Cups and three successive finals, two of which he won. He is the most capped Brazilian player of all-time and has won every major club honor in the game.

2) Falcao (Roma 1980-85)

21498_hp.jpg

Roma turned down the chance to sign Zico in 1980 and the whole world laughed. They werent laughing for long, though, as Falcao soon showed himself to be possibly the most complete midfielder in world football during the early 1980s. Falcao was like a general on the field, brilliant tactically and technically, he was nicknamed the Eighth King of Rome. He won the Scudetto in 1983, while he also excelled for Brazil, playing in their legendary 1982 World Cup team. Indeed he scored in the classic 3-2 defeat to Italy during that tournament in Spain.

1) Jose Altafini (Milan 1958-65, Napoli 65-72, Juventus 72-76)

Many regard Altafini as the greatest Brazilian to have ever played in Serie A. He scored 168 goals in 248 matches for Milan and won trophies galore during his seven seasons. The forwards most prized moment came in the 1963 European Cup final when he scored both goals as Nereo Rocco's men came from behind to beat Eusebios Benfica 2-1 at Wembley. He later moved on to Napoli and Juventus, where he also enjoyed great success. Finally left Serie A at the age of nearly 38 after 18 years in the peninsula.

By going away from the six-team Hexagonal, Goal.com's Luis Bueno says the U.S.-Mexico duopoly is correctly broken apart.

For several years now, the United States and Mexico have had a stranglehold on CONCACAF. Aside from the Gold Cup, where only Canada has been able to unseat the region's top two sides, the U.S. and Mexico have been unstoppable, particularly in World Cup qualifying. Since CONCACAF went to the six-team Hexagonal in 1998, the U.S. and Mexico have finished in the top three and have qualified directly to all four World Cups since.

Now, though, the playing field might start to level out.

Under a new proposed qualifying format, the Hexagonal would go the way of the VCR. Instead of one six-team group, the final round would feature two four-team groups, each team playing their group rival home and away. Group winners would advance directly, runners-up would play each other with the winner claiming the third and final direct berth. Playoff loser would then play a team from another confederation for another World Cup
spot.

It's a radical idea in that it breaks up the format and the U.S.-Mexico duopoly while creating more opportunities for more countries. But is it a viable option?

Certainly, for teams not named United States or Mexico, this idea is great and possibly the best idea to come around in years. After all, for teams like Costa Rica and Honduras, the battle in the Hexagonal has been essentially for one spot. And for other recent Hexagonal participants such as El Salvador and Panama, the road has been way too tough to even consider the possibility of a top-three finish. On their worst days, with their worst teams and under the worst of conditions, the U.S. and Mexico will not lose to the likes of El Salvador at home and are a good bet to escape Central America with a point.

So most teams enter the Hexagonal knowing that the U.S. and Mexico have a good shot of taking 15 points from their respective home games. Where's the intrigue in that? How does that motivate the likes of El Salvador, Trinidad or even Costa Rica or Honduras? And nevermind teams like Canada or Jamaica, who have had a tough time even getting into the final six.

Sure, the U.S. and Mexico can point to many things such as history and Gold Cup success as reasons for their standing atop the region. And while it is true that the U.S. and Mexico have reached World Cup after World Cup and have claimed one Gold Cup title after another, things have certainly been in their favor for some time. After all, when was the last time the Gold Cup was played in Central America? Or Canada? Or the Caribbean? Never, actually. The Gold Cup has been played exclusively in either the United States or Mexico. And the "draw" for the tournament is absurd, setting up the U.S. and Mexico to meet in the final of every single edition.

This new format would instantly level the playing field. With eight teams in the running for three direct World Cup berths, the chances of the U.S. and Mexico reaching the World Cup drop while the opportunties for others increase. It's simple math - the U.S. and Mexico each have a 50 percent chance of finishing in the top three of the Hexagonal, while under the new format would have just a 25 percent chance of nabbing a direct berth.

Since it would be more difficult for the United States and Mexico of reaching the World Cup under this proposal - at least statistically - few will feel sorry for the region's two powers. Qualifying for the World Cup, after all, is supposed to be difficult. The World Cup is supposed to be a reward for having survived, overcome and battled through qualifying. Nowhere in FIFA's bylaws does it say that teams outside of the host nation are entitled of reaching the World Cup. Even Spain, the reigning World Cup champions, will have to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

Somewhere along the way, U.S. and Mexico fans have gotten a sense of entitlement, as if the World Cup is not a privilege but rather a right. And now that the sense of entitlement is being threatened, suddenly the complaints arise. If anything U.S. and Mexico fans should be thankful that their less-challenging path to the World Cup lasted as long as it did.

And besides, if the U.S. and Mexico are really the dominant forces in the region, then proving it in a four-team group should not be too much to ask for, right? After all, consider these groups:

Group 1: United States, Costa Rica, Canada, Jamaica.

Group 2: Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Trinidad & Tobago.

Surely the U.S. and Mexico would be favorites to advance from those groups, right?

The rest of the region would be glad to offer them the chance of proving so under those circumstances.

Roque Santa Cruz has revealed Manchester City tried to transfer him to Lazio this summer, but they could not agree a deal with the Serie A club.

Santa Cruz, 28, struggled for form and fitness in his debut campaign at the club and scored just four goals in all competitions. With the arrival of Mario Balotelli and introduction of the new 25-man match day squads, the Paraguayan's place was removed to be under threat.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Santa Cruz confirmed manager Roberto Mancini tried to off-load him in a loan deal to Lazio but the transfer could not be agreed

"Unfortunately, I heard from the manager that he wouldn't be counting on me this season just a week before [transfer window closed]. I tried to arrange a move, but in the end, the club was happy to keep me as they weren't happy with any offers that came through.

"Now, I am again looking forward to keep training and see if I can get any chances in the team.

"They didn't come to an agreement with the club [Lazio] on terms and I was just waiting to hear what was going on. It was basically too late to keep talking so that story is finished."

Santa Cruz was also linked with a reunion with former City and Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes at Fulham. He declared he would "love" to play for the Welshman again.

"I'm very happy to play with him and if I got the chance, I would love to play again under him. Again, City was keen to keep me there and I will try to prove myself in training," the ex-Bayern Munich center forward added.

One high profile departure from Eastlands on transfer deadline day was Robinho to AC Milan. Santa Cruz was happy to see the Brazilian have his wish granted to leave after undergoing a "hard time" after completing his British record, £32.5 million transfer from Real Madrid two years ago.

He said: "I'm very happy for Robinho. He was having a hard time at City but he loves football and he had no chance to play in the team with the manager.

"It is a great move for him."
Stoke City have been boosted by a trio of signings on transfer deadline day, with swoops for Eidur Gudjohnsen, Jermaine Pennant and Marc Wilson all going through before the close of the summer transfer window.

The signing of 31-year-old Gudjohnsen was sealed on a busy deadline day when he the striker flew into England for talks with City after an agreement had been reached with Monaco to mark his return to the Premier League.

Gudjohnsen welcomed the chance to return to England's Top Flight where he had successful spells with Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea, as well as a loan spell at Tottenham last season when he made a big contribution to their win at the Britannia Stadium.

"This is a fantastic signing for the Football Club because Eidur is a player of outstanding international calibre who has performed at the highest level," Stoke manager Tony Pulis was quoted as saying on the Stoke City official website.

"There is no better example of the quality he provides than his contribution to Tottenham's win here in April. Not only did he score an excellent goal, he showed what a great footballing brain he has and his sense of awareness with a key role in their winner.

"Eidur made a significant contribution to Spurs qualifying for the Champions League and I am confident he can have a big impact upon our season.

"He certainly brings more goals to the squad, following the arrivals of Kenwyne Jones and Jon Walters, which was an important aim in this transfer window and I am delighted we have brought these three players in, together with Marc Wilson."
Marc Wilson will be one of Gudjonsen's new teammates this season after his capture from Portsmouth. The 23-year-old defender was secured in a player-plus-cash exchange deal which sees Liam Lawrence and Dave Kitson move in the opposite direction.

However, Stoke's signing of Jermaine Pennant was perhaps manager Tony Pulis' biggest last-minute transfer surprise. The former Liverpool winger has been acquired on a loan deal from Real Zaragoza until January 2011.

The police yesterday arrested eight persons as they began their crackdown on windshield washers accused of robbing and abusing motorists at major intersections in the Corporate Area.

Head of the Police Traffic Division, Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis, who vowed to be relentless in this crackdown, said the drive forms part of his traffic management re-organisation project for the Corporate Area.

In addition to holding up traffic, Lewis said the men throw water or spit on female motorists and use nails and knives to scratch the vehicles of motorists who refuse to give them money.

"I want to warn these (windshield) wipers, once they are arrested, they must go and they must not come back," Lewis said yesterday.

"If they are found there (wiping windshields in the streets) 20 times, they will be arrested and charged," he added.

The eight men who were arrested yesterday are to face charges of obstructing traffic, failing to move and keep on moving and obstructing pedestrians under the Town and Community Act.

Superintendent Lewis said each charge carries a fine of $5,000.

Yesterday's operations were carried out at the intersections of Hope, Waterloo and Trafalgar roads, in the vicinity of Devon House, a popular location for these windshield wipers.

Other operations were also conducted at the intersections of Oxford and Old Hope roads, Oxford and Half-Way Tree roads, and Hagley Park Road and Maxfield Avenue.

Lewis disclosed that the crackdown will be intensified today, with increased police deployment to other popular spots.

ZJ Liquid returns on air this week after more than a month-long suspension.

According to a source, Liquid returns to ZIP FM this week after he was suspended in July for playing an expletive on air.

ZJ Liquid, whose real name is Michael Brissett, played an unedited version of Andrew and Wada *la*hd's Beggy Beggy on his 'Fresh 2 Death' segment. The ZJ immediately covered up the blunder by switching to another song, but not before it was noticed by a number of listeners.

Playing an expletive on air is in direct violation of the Broadcasting Commission's rules and regulations. This was the ZJ's second offence since the start of the year. In February, Liquid was suspended indefinitely for playing an unedited version of Aidonia's Love It. The ZJ returned to air a month later. A Facebook group, 'Put Zj Liquid back on air' was formed shortly after. The page currently has over 8,000 fans.

On the page, a number of persons were awaiting confirmation as to when and if the Zip Jock would be back on air. One person commented, "Jah know me radio all a ketch dust, it nuh tun on back from Liquid stop play pon Zip!" Another person said, "Zip nuh good again without Liquid ... what happen to 'Fresh to Death Wednesday'... how we ago hear di fresh tunes, bossy, bus di youth! We need fi hear Liquid."

Attempts to reach both ZJ Liquid and ZIP FM's station manager D'Adra Williams, were unsuccessful.

Bolt on book tour in London

Usain Bolt - file

Jamaica's sprint sensation Usain Bolt kicked off his book tour in London yesterday with a stop on The One Show, which has an average viewing of 4.5 million people.

Bolt's biography, Usain Bolt My Story 9.58, features the story of eight days ... three gold medals ... three world records ... one amazing reputation firmly established. While in London, Bolt will visit all radio and TV sections of the BBC on the top programmes, and will also pay a visit to the Olympic Stadium where the London 2012 Summer Olympics will be held.

Bolt co-authored the book with British journalist Shaun Custis. As part of his tour, he will edit a few columns at the headquarters of the The Sun newspaper.

Although largely a media tour, Bolt will engage the public in a two-hour signing at the Waterstone's Piccadilly facility, on Thursday.

The book is over 280 pages and is complete with photographs, some of which have never been published before. Published by Harper Collins, UK, the book will be distributed by Ian Randle Publishers in the Caribbean. It will sell for £20, or approximately J$2,600.

The book is about a skinny kid from the parish of Trelawny, where they harvest the best yams in the world. It is about growing up playing cricket and football in the warm Jamaican sun, then discovering that he could run fast, very fast. It is about family, friends and the laid-back Jamaican culture; Auntie Lillian's pork and dumplings and Dad's grocery store in the sleepy village of Sherwood Content.

The book explores what makes him tick, where he gets his motivation and where he takes his inspiration. It is about the highs and the lows, the dedication and sacrifices required to get to the top. It is about fast food, partying, dancehall music, fast cars and that 'lightning bolt' pose. It is about radiating sport's biggest smile.

The names of the 10 DJs who will be featured on the exciting Heineken Green Synergy Reality TV show were unveiled when the second episode aired on TVJ last Friday.

The 10 lucky DJs are Kezah Blackwood aka DJ Banka from Clarendon, last year's semi finalist, the lone female Nazria Davis aka DJ Naz from St Andrew, last year's quarter-finalist Andre Flowers aka Ricky Eminence, Jerry Oswald aka DJ Jerry from St Andrew, Claude Richardson aka DJ Don Hype from Mandeville, Oswald Soutar aka DJ Blu from Montego Bay, Barri Taffe aka DJ 47 from Mandeville, Dwayne Thompson aka DJ Kuumba from St Catherine, Christian Watt aka DJ Wattie from St Andrew and Alfred Anderson aka DJ Blosh from Mandeville.

Host Tami Chynn introduced the DJs at a reception party held at Fiction Lounge in Kingston. Decked out in their personalised Heineken polo shirts, the DJs got a chance to 'hold a vibe' with each other and with the sponsors of the show.

They were sprung a surprise in the middle of their lyme when Tami told them that they would each play a 6-minute introductory set and that they had 15 minutes to prepare.

Of note, Ricky Eminence was at his 'home away from home' as he is the resident DJ at the club.

DJ 47 went first and started well but after experiencing some technical difficulties, walked off in the middle of his set. Don Hype followed and played pretty much an entertaining set. Banka's set was just hilarious, displaying some real funny dance moves as he played.

Blosh played an average set. DJ Blu unleashed a real party vibe, playing popular disco and R&B music, which he is accustomed to playing as a resident DJ at Montego Bay's Margaritaville.

DJ Jerry did well, so too Ricky Eminence, DJ Naz and Wattie. In general though, most of the DJs did nothing really 'special' and pretty much played average sets.

They were introduced to the local judges, Collin Hinds of FAME FM and entertainment personality/promoter, Quizz.

Collin Hinds described the sets as boring and told the DJs that some of them deserved to go. He pointed to the fact that some of them didn't use headphones and cheated as they were following and matching the waves on their computers.

They were sprung another surprise when it was revealed that another DJ was going to be put into the mix -- Narity, a popular DJ on the Kingston party circuit.

The DJs were then told that they would be given a second chance. They will each get an opportunity to play a 3-minute set and try to redeem themselves.

In the third episode on TVJ this Friday at 9:30 pm, viewers will get a chance to see how the DJs fared in their upcoming challenges.

DANCEHALL deejay, Wasp, is happy with the path his career is currently taking. With his management structure falling into place and a growing repertoire of conscious tunes, the artiste is confident of success.

"When you do a conscious song in the dancehall it is so different from doing a regular song. The life span is longer and it has a wider appeal," the artiste declared.

Wasp_w370.jpg

Wasp used the example of his single Unfair Officer, which was a hit for him in 2009 and which is still getting its fair share of props almost one year later. He also mentioned that singer I-Octane, the fast-rising standard bearer of culture, owes his growing success to conscious lyrics, "not the three-day-old dancehall hype."

"And the thing is that the elders like it and the kids are also singing it," he said of his no-holds-barred hit Unfair Officer, adding that the impact was the same with his previous single, Cry Fi Di Ghetto Youths.

"A lady who is almost 90 told me that she liked the song," he said, still sounding amazed.

Now that those songs have been tested and proven, the deejay is focused on the Daseca-produced single Nutten Nah Gwaan. Wasp goes straight to the heart of the matter with this song, a combination with Raine Seville. This single touches a nerve and he hopes it will edge him closer to his ultimate goal staking his claim on a portion of the dancehall pie.

"I wrote it on the way going to Old Harbour one day when I saw the people selling on the street and realised that nutten really nah gwaan. Raine and I met up at Carib and chatted a bit and she said she like the song Cry Fi Di Ghetto Youths and suggested that we do a song together. The next day she called and I was only too happy to go in the studio, so I did a demo and took it to Daseca and the rest is history," he laughed.

It was his first time working with the Daseca crew and Wasp has nothing but praises for their professionalism.

"Daseca dem professional and can bring my ideas to life. Working with Daseca you can't be off key because they are musicians all three of them play the keyboard. It's a good learning experience, if you as the artiste is willing to learn," he declared.

The video, which was directed by Danielle Dyer, had its premiere a few weeks ago.

The first time I heard of Kingston was on a cassette that servant in the palace did get. Then when on island me arrive, driver swerve from pothole ... me glad me survive.

z71_w370.jpg

What do you miss when you are not in Kingston?

In Jamaica, Kingston is the melting pot of what's musically hot. Crazy vibes this place got. It's not all about evading gunshot. The inspiration it gives is what I miss the most... that and the fact that compared to other parishes, there's less ghost. You'd have thought it was the other way around with murder rate said to be higher in Kingston, they found!

What are your favourite home comforts?

Here in Jamaica I had a dog trained to sit, stay, and bring drinks on tray, but it ran away... but it has worked out...Since then I have retained control of a television remote.

And your funniest moment?

Heh... I don't even know. Probably the time I thought cow itch (poison ivy) was peppermint or woman pull off my pants at show... too many things come to mind I find (lol)

What would you do if you were mayor (of Kingston) for a day?

If I were mayor for a day, I'd give cellphones away to potential wives and bar all other incoming or outgoing numbers, except mine, until my love they all find... I'm sure they'd be fine. Also, I would cook them porridge.... cause I think it would be cool for them to say to their friends "hey, Mayor Zim***bo cooked me porridge." I would also arrest all 'lepricons' and outlaw skin bleaching 'cause it's wrong teaching... Heh!

Share with us the title of the last book you read.

Animal Farm

What are your middle names?

Heh... good question.

And the last bit of music that stirred your soul?

White & Nerdy Weird Al Yankovic / Nah Lef Joe - Captain Barkey.

What was your last bit of retail therapy?

I bought new fabric for wife to make gown, she took it, jumped on bus... nowhere to be found.

Which cologne are you currently splashing?

My natural fragrance legit, but my Onion cologne ladies crying for it.

What is your preferred beverage?

Coconut water: in it no fish have made 'splish splish' .

What was your most memorable meal in Kingston?

Wally's Pan Chicken at the gas station in Manor Park... he proved to me not all Kingston roadside chicken vendors roast food that used to bark... Heh!

What are your current projects?

Ask me no questions I'll tell you no lies! It's a surprise! HEH! In Europe wives say me sweet like syrup. A lot of new material to add to your listening and viewing cereal. Production/collaborations with super-producer Sani Showbizz and his artists Alfredo, Ned Chigins', Asani, and Vlad... maaaaaddd! Watch for me on Me an Mi Kru...the Zim-poster I will slew! And also, the season Finale of the Ity and Fancy Cat show... good to go!

New music videos for you : Say Heh! Lightswitch! Zim***bouicy! It's gonna be juicy :)

What upsets you?

When step in poop and between toes it goes. Also, chickens: they have breast, but no nipples? What gives?

Share your favourite spots on the island.

Portland is grand! Beautiful beaches and lush greenery that outreaches. Me like there a lot, and also, anywhere there is a Miss Jamaica is pretty hot: Hope Gardens is also beautiful but the Zoo is not full... seems it went into regression before the recession. Needs to be revived!

Share some places in your black book.

I chill in secluded locations with wives of all nations (wink)

If I state where many potential wives may appear causing catfight, which is not right. Heh!

What's your advice to a first-time visitor to Kingston?

Relax... everything is taxed. Heh! It's a place full of hidden gems...not half as bad as you see on the news internationally.

Don't believe everything you hear, you hear! Come check it out!

What's your philosophy?

Smile and the world smiles back at you.

It would seem that the Reggae/Dancehall music fraternity is being hit by one blow after another. Top deejays have lost their US visas and work permits, and Buju Banton, Ninjaman and Flippa Mafia are off the scene all facing criminal charges. The big question now is, how will this impact the dancehall community at large. Already, the top annual reggae show in the United States Irie Jamboree has cancelled this year's staging

beenie-22_w370.jpg

rie-Jamboree vice-president Louis Grant told the Sunday Observer that visa cancellations, primarily regarding Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Busy Signal, Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Jah Cure and Sizzla, as well as a few other notables, coupled with the incarceration of top tier acts Buju Banton and Ninjaman, were the primary reasons the decision was taken not to host the show, one of North America's premier reggae festivals.

"Not having access to this cluster of acts to factor into our line-up has adversely impacted us this year. At the very least, this situation is progressively becoming dire and needs to be strategically and properly addressed, via fair and prompt intervention, so that fair and prompt resolution can be achieved post haste," Grant said.

For G City Entertainment promoter Casey Rankine, although many of the major acts are out of commission in the United States market, it is "business as usual".

"It has not greatly affected my plans. The major challenge is the economy -- weak audience turnout and poor ticket sales," Rankine said.

In fact, according to him, the situation has now created an opportunity for other good artistes.

"There are other artistes who have done work for years, or upcoming talents, and this gives them the opportunity to be highlighted, so we are looking forward to working with them," he said.

New York-based publicist Anthony Turner says the unavailability of the aforementioned artistes is not the greatest challenge for promoters in the US right now.

"Even if those artistes were available, it would not be a given that they could have brought in a full house or that the event would have been a guaranteed success," he said.

Like, Rankine, Turner said one of the biggest challenge facing promoters now is the economic recession.

"There are other factors to take into consideration too, such as finding affordable venues and receiving quality sponsorships," Turner shared, adding that unlike events in Jamaica, US sponsors do not give a lot of cash support, so promoters rely heavily on gate receipts.

But while some US promoters are experiencing challenges as it relates to the staging of reggae events, for Eddy Edwards of Riddim Marketing, it's all about having the right packaging. Edwards, who has hosted plays, church festivals and other family-friendly events, says he walked away from "the whole dancehall mix up".

"I lean to cultural and clean lyrics artistes, so as a result, I am not affected by what's going on right now. If you notice, somehow, those are the ones not in trouble," the promoter said.

He admits that the numbers have been down because of the recession, but says because of the nature of his events he has enjoyed enough support to make them viable that plus the fact that the artistes with whom he has been working are "very reasonable".

However, Irie Jamboree's Grant is not swayed by the argument for cultural productions.

"Our very pervasive culture is so much a part of generations "X" and "Y"'s pop culture, that these kids, primarily of Jamaican and a wider Caribbean descent, will just not allow that to happen," Grant said.

He admits that growth may be stymied for several reasons, the main culprit being the lyrical content of some of the songs. But, he says recent steps by the Broadcasting Commission has helped to address, in a very profound way, guidelines that give "the stamp of approval to songs" which ultimately get played on the airwaves in Jamaica.

Grant believes that this move has helped to shape, and usher in a revolution of greater creativity in writing and consequently, many of the dancehall acts and music producers have made notable adjustments to their art.

"On a personal level, I am particularly happy for this advent, as the songs that get sent to us on a daily basis are better songs, if only by "air play" standards, which ultimately bodes well for the longevity and sustainability of the industry at large," he said.

According to G-City's Rankine, the solution going forward is for dancehall acts to "always keep it professional in terms of management, performance, public appearances, by keeping their artiste fees at a fair market value, and adjusting their attitude towards promoters, without (whom) they would have no shows, remembering at all times that it's a business."

Smoking ganja eases pain — study

August 31, 2010

OTTAWA, Canada (AFP) Smoking cannabis can relieve chronic neuropathic pain and help sufferers sleep, researchers said in a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal yesterday.

Smoking pot also improved their mood, said the researchers led by Mark Ware at McGill University in Montreal.

Twenty-one participants in the study were asked to inhale marijuana smoke three times daily for five days.

Each suffered from post-traumatic or postsurgical neuropathic pain, caused by nerves that do not heal, for which there are few treatment options.

"A single inhalation of 25 mg of 9.4 per cent tetrahydrocannabinol herbal cannabis three times daily for five days reduced the intensity of pain, improved sleep and was well tolerated," the study concluded.

Less potent cannabis yielded "intermediate but nonsignificant degrees of relief," it added. "We found no differences in mood or quality of life" in those cases.

The most common adverse effects of the drug found to be negligible were headaches, dry eyes, a burning sensation in areas of neuropathic pain, dizziness, numbness and coughing.

DANCEHALL AND MOBILE MARKETING

DANCEHALL producer Donovan Don Corleon Bennett last week launched an iTunes application to more effectively market his music on mobile devices.

Downloaders of the free app will be updated on news, music and shows from Corleon direct to their iPhones, iPads and iPods. The move signals that Jamaican producers have began to embrace mobile music marketing, as iTunes is the largest Internet music store controlling some 70 per cent of legal music purchases.

don-app_w370.jpg

It helps with the visibility of Jamaican music in at least a most basic sense. Don Corleon Records is, hopefully, the first of many Reggae labels refusing to be left behind in the technology revolution, stated Bookman Ink, publicist for Don Corleon Records, in a written response to a Sunday Observer query. Every Don Corleon Records song in the iTunes database can be found through the new application, which itself is free to download. There are a lot of extra goodies for users to become a part of Corleons world. His biography, photos, YouTube videos, Twitter account and blog are all included in the package.

The Corleon Records application was released August 20 and created utilising MobBase, a website that customises iPhone applications. It takes up to six weeks to get approval for such an application on iTunes but the benefits can include increased sales. MobBase applications are free to set up but costs start once the application is launched. For example, 10,000 installs will cost about US$65 per month, stated MobBase online adding that there is also an initial fee of US$20 to launch the application.

Corleon has produced various Billboard-charting albums including Sizzlas Rise To The Occasion, Sean Pauls The Trinity, Rihannas A Girl Like Me and Gentlemans Confidence. His musical career took off in 2000 with the launch of the Vendetta Sound System alongside cousin, Protojé. He would soon make his name in music production, debuting with the Mad Ants Riddim in 2002. His next major project is Protojés album, The Seven Year Itch.

SUGAR Minott may be gone, but as far as his son Lincoln Jr is concerned, his legacy will be living on forever.

"My dad's dream was for his children to carry on the musical legacy... and that's what we will be doing," he told the Observer. The siblings are now in the studio recording some of their dad's tunes. Lincoln says it will be a tribute recording in honour of their father.

Junior-Lincoln_w370.jpg

While Sugar Minott was known for roots rock Reggae and his marijuana-loving songs, Lincoln is definite about the kind of songs he wants to do.

"It will be straight reality and message music," said the singer who gave his life to Christ in 1995. A member of the Kencot Seventh-day Adventist Church, he is determined to make a difference on the music scene with his inspirational songs.

"My father was baptised a long time ago and somewhere along the line he let go," Lincoln shared.

He said when he got saved he encouraged his father to "take up the mantle again", but somehow that never materialised.

Still, he has some hope that his dad's soul may have been saved, and according to him his father "prayed a prayer of repentance" on his death bed.

"I leave it up to the Almighty. I don't know if he was saved or not, but it gives me a kind of peace knowing he did that," young Lincoln told the Observer.

Born Lincoln Minott Jr in Kingston, he attended Kingston College his father's alma mater.

It was not surprising when the music bug bit him as a third former in high school. After singing at school concerts and around his friends they encouraged him to "pursue the dream" as they told him he could really sing.

Young Lincoln, soon switched from secular songs to gospel after he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Saviour.

He joined the Kencot Seventh-day Adventist Church where he was a part of the youth choir.

Today, he is still a gospel crusader and is even more determined to make a difference. He can be found performing on the church circuit, singing at weddings and other functions.

Lincoln is still trying to cope with the sudden loss of his dad, but says he wishes more artistes would take better care of themselves.

"I don't know why the culture of Reggae involves marijuana, drinking and the whole drug lifestyle. It has taken a lot of legends from us through heart attack and other drug-related deaths. It's sad that a lot of Reggae icons could still be here if they had just maintained a healthier lifestyle," he said.

Looking ahead, Lincoln says he will be working alongside his brothers and sisters in keeping the musical legacy alive, but he also has another dream of his dad to fulfil and that is to build a shelter to assist the poor. "That's the vision my dad had he lived for the poor."

NEW YORK -- For all the turmoil and talk of debt, Manchester United is still the most valuable franchise in all of sports.

Forbes released its list of the world's most valuable teams Wednesday, with the English Premier League club leading the way at $1.84 billion.

The top American franchise, the Dallas Cowboys, was second at $1.65 billion. The New York Yankees, Washington Redskins, New England Patriots, Real Madrid, New York Giants, Arsenal, New York Jets and Houston Texans round out the top 10.

Amid protests from fans, Manchester United's owning Glazer family has insisted it will not entertain offers for the club, which has around $1 billion of debt.

The full list is available at Forbes' website.

MONTEGO BAY, St James Former world's fastest man Asafa Powell is confident Jamaica will continue to produce world-class sprinters even after he has hung up his spikes.

Powell, who broke the world record three times on his way to lowering his personal best to 9.72 seconds in 2008, was full of praise for two of the young rising stars on the horizon inaugural Youth Olympic Games 100m champions Odean Skeen and repeat IAAF World Junior Championships 100m champion Dexter Lee.

ASAFA-POWELL-copy_w370.jpg

"It just shows Jamaica has all this potential to give to the world," he told the Observer during a stop-over at the Sangster International Airport last Friday as he accompanied his girlfriend Yendi Phillipps on her way back from the Miis Universe competition in Las Vegas.

Powell added that for the youngsters to achieve their full potential, they need all the support they can get to ensure they develop at the rate they should.

While his own retirement is nowhere on the horizon, Powell said he felt secure that when it was time for him and double world record-holder Usain Bolt to step aside, Jamaica's place at the top of the world rankings would still be intact.

Skeen became the first winner of the Youth Olympics 100 last week when he ran a personal best 10.42 seconds to take the title in Singapore.

Earlier last month, Lee created history when he became the first man to win consecutive IAAF World Junior titles when he clocked 10.21 seconds in Moncton, Canada.

Lee, who was the first Jamaican man to win a global 100m title when he won the World Youth title in Ostrava, Czech Republic in 2007, had also won the 2008 WJC title in Poland.

A back injury had forced Powell to end his 2010 season early as doctors has advised him to cease competing for six weeks due to inflammation in his lower back.

Powell had a season best 9.82 seconds, the same as Bolt.

MONTEGO BAY, St James All-island schoolboys' football champions St George's College and daCosta Cup winners St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) will open their 2010 season with games against St Jago High and Lacovia High on September 11 at Jarrett Park.

St George's College is set to play St Jago in the first game of the scheduled triple-header, while STETHS and Lacovia will meet in the feature.

In the second game, St James High and Spot Valley High will meet in a Zone A encounter.

The season is set to be launched on Wednesday at the Terra Nova Hotel in Kingston, starting at 10:00 am.

Meanwhile, two schools have withdrawn from the daCosta Cup competition, leaving 74 schools to contest the 12 zones.

It is understood that Belair High and Aabuthnott Gallimore High will not be taking part this season, but reasons for their withdrawal were not known

Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of midfielder Sami Khedira from Stuttgart.

Khedira has a agreed a five-year deal and joins for an undisclosed fee.

"Real Madrid C. F. and VfB Stuttgart have agreed to the transfer of Sami Khedira, who will sign a 5-year contract with Real Madrid," the club said in a statement.

The 23-year-old Germany international had spent his entire career with the Swabians, coming through the youth ranks from the age of eight to make his first-team debut in October 2006, the season in which Stuttgart last won the Bundesliga.

Khedira became a regular in Armin Veh's team that season and penned his first professional contract just after the winter break, a deal he extended in 2008 until 2011.

"Obviously you don't gladly let such a leading player and figure like Sami Khedira leave, but on the other hand, we could understand Sami's desire to continue his career with Real," explained Stuttgart's director of sport Fredi Bobic.

"We wish him lots of success with his new challenge in Madrid."

Khedira captained the Germany under-21 side to glory at the European Championships in 2009 and made his senior international debut last September.

Less than a year later, he was an ever-present for Germany at the World Cup, scoring his first international goal in the third-place play-off against Uruguay earlier this month.

That goal and his performances in South Africa convinced Real coach Jose Mourinho to make him one of his top summer targets and Khedira will take the next step in his career in the Primera Division next season.

Newcastle have signed Marseille's France international winger Hatem Ben Arfa on a season-long loan deal.

The 23-year-old put pen to paper after weeks of negotiations between the two clubs to become Newcastle boss Chris Hughton's fifth capture of the summer.

He said: "I've paid real attention to the history of the club and the great players to have played for it, and particularly the supporters.

"I am delighted to be here and want to showcase my skills in Newcastle."

Ben Arfa had also been linked with a switch to German club Werder Bremen, but insisted "it was always my first choice to come to Newcastle".

He added: "All I'm waiting for is to show what I can do in front of the public in Newcastle. A lot of my friends in France already know the fans' reputation. The stadium has an ambience that is unique and I feel very lucky to have this opportunity."

Ben Arfa, a product of the French academy at Clairefontaine, started his professional career at Lyon before moving to Marseille and is regarded as one of the most naturally talented players in France.

He has played for his country eight times, scoring twice for Les Bleus, including on his debut in the 6-0 win over the Faroe Islands in October 2007.

Despite his international recognition his temperament has sometimes been called into question, and some may consider the signing a gamble, but Hughton believes he will be a big hit at St James' Park.

"Hatem is a player who we have been tracking for a long time, and what is important is that he is not only a young player who should continue to improve, but somebody who already has a great reputation in the game," Hughton said.

"We think he will add flair to the squad and we're confident he'll fit in well with the team that we have put together here. He will, I am sure, prove to be a great addition.

"He'll come into my thinking for the next game at home to Blackpool. He's someone who will excite the fans here, who of course have always identified with skilful, attacking players."

RAUL MEIRELES has completed his £11.5million move to Liverpool.

The Reds moved swiftly for the 27-year-old Porto midfielder after losing Javier Mascherano to Barcelona.

But Meireles insisted he is not a Mascherano clone after signing a four-year contract.

He said: "Roy Hodgson was key to me coming here because he worked so hard to sign me.

"I am Meireles and not Mascherano and that will be clear to the fans.

"I hope one day the Liverpool fans will remember me for being successful."

Meireles has won four titles with Porto and been capped 38 times by Portugal, playing in all four of his country's games at this summer's World Cup.

Liverpool have finally agreed a fee with Barcelona for Javier Mascherano.

The Reds confirmed a deal has been done on their website.

Liverpool have refused to disclose the amount, but it is believed to be in the region of £18million with another £4million in add-ons.

Mascherano has been given formal permission to speak to the Catalans and personal terms are expected to be a formality.

Barcelona have already indicated they are prepared to pay the Argentina skipper £85,000-a-week.

Barca have beaten Inter Milan to sign Mascherano and the Reds were not interested in dealing with the Italians when they would only offer £6million plus Sulley Muntari.

Although he will be sad to lose a player of Mascherano's class, Roy Hodgson will be glad the summer-long saga is over.

He will use the money to strengthen his squad and has agreed a £3million fee with Fulham for Paul Konchesky.

Fulham will not complete the deal until they have brought in Carlos Salcido from PSV Eindhoven to replace Konchesky.

Inter Milan have confirmed the signing of Brazilian teenager Philippe Coutinho for a fee in the region of 3.8 million euros.

The 18-year-old was purchased from Vasco da Gama last summer but former Inter manager José Mourinho allowed the youngster to stay in Brazil on a year-long loan.

At his official unveiling today, Inter's new head coach Rafael Benítez hailed Coutinho as the future of the Nerazzurri.

"He has many qualities, we're expecting him to do well straightaway," said Benítez. "He can be the future of Inter."

Coutinho spoke of his excitement at signing for the prestigious Milanese club. Experienced professionals at the San Siro such as club captain Javier Zanetti and compatriot Lucio will be expected to help the youngster settle in Italy.

"I want to learn Italian fast and settle down as quickly as possible," said a determined Coutinho. "I'm a new face in Italian football so I have to show what I can do."

Coutinho is equally able across all offensive midfield areas. His eye-catching performances for Brazil's U-17 squad led La Gazzetta dello Sport to name him as one of the most exciting prospects in world football.

"My position? I'm a midfielder. I like to play behind the strikers and attack, so yes, I'm a bit like Sneijder," he said.

Comparisons have inevitably been drawn between AC Milan's Alexandre Pato and Inter's new protégé, but Coutinho insists he is a different type of player to Pato.

"The comparisons with Pato? It's flattering, but we're two different players. He's a striker, I'm more a midfielder."

THE late Bob Marley has been listed as a top-five global icon in a CNN International poll released yesterday, affirming the popularity of the late Reggae star.

The US-based news agency stated that the Jamaican-born musician's status was so large that he embodied a musical form and religion.

Bob-Marley_w370.jpg

"No performer personified Reggae and Rastarianism more than Bob Marley, a musical inspiration for millions. Responsible for bringing together warring factions in Jamaica, its small wonder he was honoured with a state funeral," stated CNN in a poll conducted by Icon, its new arts and culture programme. Each month, Icon selects a list of arts and culture icons from a different field.

US pop singer Michael Jackson topped the list with votes nearing 100,000 according to CNN. He was followed by the UK group The Beatles, Chinese pop star Leslie Cheung, Elvis Presley of the US and Marley. Apart from Jackson, the votes for each artiste were not revealed. The poll which was open for a month selected 20 global artistes from which voters could choose. The field included Bob Dylan, Gilberto Gill, Juanas, Khaled, Miriam Makeba, Youssou N'Dour, Ash Bhosle, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, The Rolling Stones, Oum Kalsoum, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Celia Cruz, and Teresa Teng.

Currently, Marley tops the iTunes reggae albums chart in 18 of the 22 listed country markets indicating that 30 years after his passing his relevance remains. Additionally, the Marley machinery will shortly release a 30th anniversary of his final concert entitled Live Forever. This definitive Marley album, special double CD in eco-friendly packaging is a limited regional release which becomes available through Tuff Gong Distribution on September 23.
