This young mans name is Bobby Tillman. He was 18 years old and he lived in Douglasville, Georgia. Late Saturday night he was beaten and stomped to death by 4 cowards

What started out as a small party at a home on Independence Drive ended up with between60 and 80 people, Miller said.

Some very responsible parents let their daughters have a party at their house, and there were only 10 people expected to come, Miller said.

The parents asked the party-goers to leave, and a fight began between two girls outside the home, Miller said.

One of the females hit a male, who said he wouldnt hit a girl but would hit the next male that walked by, Miller said. The 5-feet-6-inch, 124-pound Tillman was the next male. Several people then joined in the attack on Tillman, investigators said.

Tillman was still breathing as deputies arrived at the scene, Miller said. Deputies administered CPR to the teen, who did not survive.

Now we agree that a man hitting a female is b*tch-made, but its JUST as b*tch-made to RANDOMLY pick a smaller kid to beat up! SMH

Four people have been arrested in connection with the teens death.

The four arrested were identified as Quantez Devonta Mallory, 18, Horace Damon Coleman, 19, Emmanuel Benjamin Boykins, 18, and Tracen Lamar Franklin, 19.

All four are being held in the Douglas County Jail, charged with murder. Three were taken into custody at the scene of the beating early Sunday, and Franklin turned himself in later in the day, Miller said.

Miller said all four would have their first court appearances before a Superior Court judge, likely late Monday morning.

Sex, drugs, and rock & roll may explain why men from the 60's and 70's wore pants fitted for today's average 15-year-old girl. Generally, tight pants may have been in style a few decades ago, but in modern society, wearing skin molding pants might trigger bizarre stares from bystanders everywhere.

Aerodynamic trousers are a thing of the past, and hopefully not a thing of the future.

comfort

First of all, tight pants may be the most uncomfortable clothing to have ever existed. The simple chore of having to pull on them for them to fit properly is reason enough to avoid buying them. Imagine wearing super fitted pants day in and day out, with the feeling that something is running up your leg constantly and hindering your comfort. In order to minimize the restrictive nature of tight pants, it goes without saying that when someone slips a pair on, they will also put on equally fitted underwear to reduce friction.

Since boxer shorts are loose under tight pants, they cause constant annoyance because they must always be placed properly around the thighs. The idea of adjusting boxer shorts or briefs every time one gets up from his seat is another valid reason to avoid buying tight jeans or tight pants. They are not only uncomfortable, but very unpractical for everyday wear.

Balancing comfort with style is an issue for the modern man now more than ever. Therefore, considering the discomfort of stretch pants, one should limit himself from buying a pair. The idea should be to buy fitted pants that are loose enough to be comfortable when bending over. If the slacks limit your range of motion, they shouldn't be worn on any occasion. Wearing tight leather pants, for example, may be appropriate when club hopping to stylish nightspots, or when attending a high-end fashion show. On the other hand, tight jeans should be banned from your wardrobe and not be worn all together, unless you are 105 pounds with blonde hair.

Sex appeal

Yet another reason to avoid wearing skintight apparel is its lack of sex appeal. Today's Cosmo Man values clothing that exude sex appeal, and tight pants surely don't project that manly image. Women generally like men who can dress with a certain allure and that have an up-to-date wardrobe. Wearing skintight slacks definitely does not adhere to today's styles and trends, and goes against the general preference of women. Plus, let's face it, the modern gentleman wants to fit in and be regarded as a genuine dresser by colleagues and members of the opposite sex.

Wearing slick trousers could lead to harsh criticism (depending on the environment) because they are simply out of style and often ridiculed by people with mainstream standards. Therefore, men wearing outdated and supposedly trendy tight pants would lose precious points when it comes to impressing women. When dating, men should not wear tight pants, as it could be a major turn-off to their companion. On the other hand, if you're a rock star, happen to have the name Mick Jagger, and be worth a few million dollars, wearing slick orange pants wouldn't be too much of a problem in attracting members of the opposite sex.

In general, tight pants are a thing of the past. They lack sex appeal and aren't comfortable or practical for every day wear. Occasionally, some men can get away with wearing them without looking like aliens, but for the rest of us, we should simply stick to moderately fitted pants. Unless you want to relive the 70's every day of your lives

Google Street View captured three heroin dealers outside a

Williamsburg bodega, "where they peddled their product to hipsters and other dope fiends." The three of them, Shaundell Dade, Jamel Pringle and Jonathan Paulino were among seven who were arrested in an undercover sting operation by the NYPD.

Cops took surveillance footage of the seven hawking heroin outside a north Williamsburg bodega, where undercover cops bought $10 packets of the drug, which had colorful stamps like "KFC" or "Monster" (the energy drink).

"They were catering to the hipster crowd, among other customers," one law-enforcement told the New York Post.

The dealers are seen in the footage hiding the heroin in magnetic lock-boxes and stashing it behind one of the bodega's signs. Often the crew would actually sell in the bodega, where officials were able to purchase drugs in the back of the store (and, in a poor turn for the owner, found the bodega selling untaxed cigarettes).

They had become so brazen and open about selling that even Google's little voyeur-car was able to capture them in the process:

Here are the lyrics:

You werent perfect but you made life worth it

Stick around, some real feelings might surface

Been a long time since I spoke to you in a bathroom gripping you up and choking you

What the hell was I supposed to do

I know you aint getting this type of d**k from that local dude

MC Hammer has fired the latest shot in his ongoing feud with Jay-Z.

King Hammer
dropped a video titled "Better Run Run" this morning November 1. In it Hov, whom Hammer has given the nickname "devil boy", is seen running from satan, as Hammer raps about him selling his soul.

He suggests Beyonce, fame and wealth were a part of the package, and Jay-Z's signature diamond Roc sign is a salute to the devil.

At the video's end Hammer, now a Christian preacher baptizes Jigga, saving him from a fiery fate.

This beef started when Jay-Z dissed Hammer on Kanye West's "So Appalled" record when he rapped:

"Show me where the boats is, Ferrari Testarossa's/Hammer went broke so you know I'm more focused. I lost 30 mil so I spent another 30/Cause unlike Hammer 30 mil can't hurt me."

Will this be the end of the beef? Or is it just getting started?

Seneca, South Carolina - Noah Smith, a 31-year-old South Carolina man was jailed after he was allegedly found naked in a stranger's home with a mouse tail protruding out of his butt.

Oh yes, it's as bad as it sounds.

According to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, a deputy responding to a burglary report discovered Smith laying face down naked inside the doorway of the victims home.

When the deputy tried to make contact with Smith, he reportedly turned over and slapped the deputy, prompting the deputy to deploy his Taser. After seeing that the Taser had no effect on Smith, the deputy called for backup.

A few moment's later, a cluster of deputies tried to apprehend Smith in the victim's bedroom, however Smith evaded arrest by jumping off the victim's bed in an attempt to kick the deputies.

Pepper spray was deployed, however it was ineffective as well, since Smith continued to kick at deputies and evade arrest.

Deputies then struck Smith several times with a baton, however Smith retaliated by attempting to bite one of the deputies.

Eventually a dog pile of deputies wrestled Smith to the ground, covering his mouth with a blanket so he couldn't bite them. An EMS crew that arrived on scene assisted in getting Smith shackled and tied down to a stretcher.

Since Smith was suspected of being high on mushrooms, he was taken to a local emergency room for a medical exam. It was during the exam medical personnel found a mouse tail protruding from Smith's rectum. An X-Ray later revealed that Smith had a mouse lodged further inside his rectum.

Smith was booked into the Oconee County Detention Center on charges of resisting arrest, two counts of assault and battery and indecent exposure.

drugplanecia.jpgNEW YORK, United States Federal investigators are piecing together details of an audacious new trend in drug smuggling: South American gangs are buying old jets, stuffing them full of cocaine and flying them across the Atlantic to feed Europes growing coke habit.

At least three gangs have struck deals to fly drugs to West Africa and from there to Europe, according to United States indictments. One trafficker claimed he already had six aircraft flying. Another said he was managing five airplanes. Because there is no radar coverage over the ocean, big planes can cross the Atlantic virtually undetected.

The skys the limit, one Sierra Leone trafficker boasted to a Drug Enforcement Administration informant, according to court documents.

The new air route is remarkable because of the distances involved and the complexity of flying big jets, said Scott Decker, a criminology professor at Arizona State University who studies smuggling methods. A trip from Venezuela to West Africa is about 3,400 miles (5,500 kilometres) about triple the distance to Florida.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime began warning about trans-Atlantic drug planes after November 2, 2009, when a burned-out Boeing 727 was found in the desert in Mali. Drug smugglers had flown the jet from Venezuela, unloaded it and then torched the aircraft, investigators said.

In some cases, executive jets have been used, including a Gulfstream II that landed in Guinea-Bissau in 2008 and another Gulfstream seized in 2007 as it tried to depart Venezuela for Sierra Leone.

In the last year, a flurry of arrests has begun shedding light on how the air routes work. The cases are being prosecuted in a New York federal court because some of the cocaine was supposed to have been sent to the United States.

The quantity of cocaine distributed and the means employed to distribute it were extraordinary, prosecutors wrote in one case. They warned of a conspiracy to spread vast quantities of cocaine throughout the world by way of cargo airplanes.

In some ways it is a throwback to the 1970s and 80s, when drug pilots flew freely between Colombia and staging areas near the US border, Decker said. Back then, drug lords such as Amado Carrillo, nicknamed The Lord of the Skies, sent jets with as much as 15 tons of cocaine from Colombia to northern Mexico.

diddycirocvodka1.jpgCHICAGO (AdAge.com) Made in France, Cîroc vodka has what importer Diageo likes to call liquid credentials it is one of the first vodkas made from fine French grapes, mauzac blanc and ugni blanc, and it is distilled five times.

But what really sets this brand apart are its street credentials.
Sales have skyrocketed since Diageo in 2007 partnered with hip-hop mogul Sean Diddy Combs, who has described himself as a hybrid brand manager, chief marketing officer and spokesman.

In the African-American community, he has a lot of influence, said Megan Metcalf, editor of Wine & Spirits Daily. He did a good job of reaching out to them, and from there it sounds like they had more Anglos in other markets jumping on board.

Sales jumped 41% to $6.8 million in the year ended Oct. 3, according to SymphonyIRI, which excludes Walmart, club and liquor stores, and bars and restaurants. Diageo says the brand grew 552% from 2007 to 2010 and has replaced Belvedere as the second-ranked vodka in the ultra-premium category.

Demand has surged this year partly in response to Cîrocs first line extensions, which include coconut- and red-berry-flavored vodkas.

But it all still goes back to Diddy. Before him, Diageo used to focus on the grape, said Jon Dobbin, a senior VP at MediaCom, the brands media agency until January, when Diageo will hand duties to Aegis Carat. That whole grape story just didnt work, because nobody really cared. It didnt carry around enough cachet.

Rather than targeting the herd, MediaCom focused advertising on a key group of influential people, executives said, and ran ads almost exclusively on a handful of networks including Bravo and E!, plus publications such as Vibe and Hip Hop Weekly.

Ads also target more traditional upscale audiences, including buys on Plum TV, a resort network shown in Aspen, Nantucket, the Hamptons and Miami Beach that goes for an active, influential and educated demographic.

The brand has positioned itself as the Official Vodka of New Years Eve, and has sponsored red-carpet telecasts at award shows.

Diddy set the tone early, telling Ad Age in 2007 that Ive branded myself as the king of celebration, and thats what this alliance is all about.

Once he posed with a perspex case containing $20million at Lord's cricket ground. after being hailed as the saviour of English cricket.

But that counted for nothing at the private prison in Conroe near Houston, Texas, and the inmates sharing his cell.

'I was on the telephone and some of the other people in the cell didn't like it,' he told a friend who visited him, according to the Sunday Times.

'They said something to me and then two of them jumped me and kept punching me and kicking me in the head.

'I lost consciousness, but at one time I came round and grabbed one of them by the leg. That just set them off a again'.

The guards burst into the cell and shackled Stanford before taking him to a hospital where he underwent an operation while still chained up.

Stanford suffered fractures to his eye socket, cheek bones and severe bruising to his body.

He has lost all feeling in the right side of his face. No one has been punished for the attack and he spent three weeks in solitary confinement. before being moved to another prison.

The assault happened in October last year in a cell holding 14 other men. It was designed to hold eight inmates and at the time had no electricity, air conditioning and was in virtual darkness.

The friend claimed the inmates were 'on edge' with each other because of the cramped conditions.

Stanford, who faces 21 charges at his trial which begins in January, had made three requests to be moved to another prison.

His downfall began after he signed a deal with the England and Wales Cricket Board in June 2008 for five Twenty20 international matches between England and a West Indies all-star XI with a prize of $20 million.

He was caught flirting with the wives and girlfriends of England's cricketers and was seen to grab Emma Prior, wife of wicket-keeper Matt and pull her onto his lap before putting an arm round Alistair Cook's girlfriend.

An assessment of Stanford's health was prepared for a court by Victor Scarano, a forensic psychiatrist.

He wrote: 'Mr Stanford described himself as a breathing corpse with increased episodes of despair, hopelessness and helplessness'.

Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel of New York at the opening of the ethics committee trial against him, Nov. 15, 2010.

(Credit: AP)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Beleaguered Democratic Rep. Charlie Rangel of New York dramatically walked out of his own ethics hearing today, after charging the House ethics committee of unfairly denying him the opportunity to retain a lawyer. The ethics committtee subpanel serving as Rangel's jurors, however, continued with the hearing and decided they have enough facts to determine whether Rangel is guilty or innocent of the 13 charges of ethics violations against him, without hearing from Rangel or any other witnesses.

After reviewing the evidence presented by the House ethics committee's lawyer -- which included more than 550 exhibits -- the eight-member ethics subpanel decided that none of the facts in the case were in dispute. They closed the public hearing to deliberate privately whether Rangel should be charged with any of the 13 violations. Once they make that decision, they will report their decision to the full ethics committee and conduct a separate hearing to determine what disciplinary actions they will recommend, if any.

While the ethics subpanel reviewed the evidence against Rangel, the longtime lawmaker was conspicuously absent. Just a little over 30 minutes after the hearing began this morning, Rangel said he had no choice but to remove himself from the proceedings because he had no lawyer.

"All I'm asking for is the time to get counsel," Rangel said before walking out.

The 80-year-old lawmaker said he parted ways with his legal team this fall because he was unable to afford representation after paying more than $2 million in legal fees so far, over the course of a two-year investigation into his actions. The Washington Post further reports that Rangel and his attorneys clashed over his defense strategy, including Rangel's decision to make a long speech on the House floor over the summer in which he defiantly told his colleagues, "I am not going away."

The ethics committee suggested Rangel create a legal defense fund, but he said today he has not had enough time to set it up.

"I am being denied a right to have a lawyer right now because I don't have the opportunity to have a legal defense fund set up and because I can't afford another $1 million," Rangel told the ethics subcommittee. "I truly believe I am not being treated fairly."

Michael McCaul, R-Texas.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After recessing to consider Rangel's remarks, committee chair Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) said, "Mr. Rangel has repeatedly sought and received committee guidance on how he may pay his legal fees."

However, she added that the committee members were "extremely troubled" to hear that Rangel's lawyers left the case shortly before Rangel's trial.

Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.) added that it was an "astonishing display of profssional irresponsiblity for a law firm... to essentially drain the resources available to pay the firm... and literally on the eve of the hearing, where [Rangel's] fate is in peril, withdraw."

Before Rangel left the hearing, however, he also laid the blame on the ethics committee, for insisting on holding the hearings before the lame duck Congress ends its session this December.

"I would want you to know that I don't think it's fair that I participate in any type of proceeding if, in fact, what you are basically telling me is that the political calendar will not allow me enough time to get lawyer at this crucial time," he said. "I think we ought to find the time. What prevents us from doing it?"

Furthermore, Rangel said he would not represent himself. "I've been a lawyer here long enough to know it is very, very unwise for any person... to be his own lawyer in a proceeding like this," he said.

Rangel released a statement this afternoon saying he was "very disappointed" with the ethics panel's decision to proceed with the hearings. He said the committee "can do what they will with me because they have the power and I have no real chance of fighting back."

Rangel this morning reminded the committee group that he urged them to hold the hearings earlier in the year -- in the midst of the congressional campaign season. Rangel managed to fend off a primary challenge and win re-election for a 21st term this month.

"I had hoped you would do it before the Democratic primary. It would have been helpful if you had done it before the general election," Rangel said today. "I have been begging that my colleagues in the Congress, my constituents, my family have the opportunity to hear this."

The charges of ethics violations against Rangel are related to his personal finances and his fundraising efforts for a new center at New York City College.

The ethics committee's lawyer, R. Blake Chisam, argued the committee was prepared to make its judgment because the facts were indisputable. "The facts here are the facts," he said. "The omissions are the omissions. The inaccuracies are the inaccuracies."

While Chism argued the facts could not be questioned, he demonstrated that the judgments derived from the facts could vary.

In one instance, Republican Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas questioned Chism about evidence indicating that Rangel knew he received income from the Punta Cana Yacht Club, even though he failed to report it.

Chism responded, "These documents... show clearly the repsondent was told he had income and... told them where to send that money. That's unequivocal. He knew and he failed repeatedly to report his income."

rljam-35-Rita-Marley231344-300x200.jpgRita Marley, widow of Reggae superstar Bob Marley, is to receive the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) 2010 Marcus Garvey Lifetime Achievement Award.

The award will be presented to her at the ICS 17th Annual Caribbean American Heritage Awards Gala this evening (November 12), at the JW Marriott Hotel in downtown Washington D.C.

According to President and Founder of ICS, Dr. Claire Nelson, Rita Marley is the perfect recipient for the award this year. She told JIS news that the award recognizes persons who, unselfishly, advocate to empower and uplift people of Caribbean and African descent.

Dr. Nelson said that throughout the life of Rita Marley, her music and actions have demonstrated an unconditional will to help lift the image of Africa on the global stage, while assisting Jamaicans.

The Marcus Garvey Lifetime Award is presented annually, by the ICS, to an individual or organization that has demonstrated a commitment to the principles of human empowerment of the people of African descent. Since its inception, recipients have included Reggae superstar, Jimmy Cliff; Trinidad and Tobagos Calypso star, Slinger Francisco (The Mighty Sparrow); and Frederick Toots Hibberts of Toots and the Maytals fame.

Last year, the ICS conferred the Vanguard Award on world and Olympic champion sprinter, Usain Bolt.

Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, the former reputed Jamaican drugs and weapons dealer, will return to a Manhattan Court here tomorrow for the next phase of his pre-trial preparations.

Coke has been in jail since June when he was extradited to face charges of allegations of illegal dealings in drugs and gun running.

Prosecutors at the United States Attorney's Office for the southern district of New York, have meticulously been preparing their case and providing material to Coke's defence team.

The case, which attracted worldwide attention following a stand off between US and Jamaican Government authorities over Coke's extradition earlier this year, is being presided over by US Federal Judge, Robert P Patterson.

Patterson will likely set a trial date for sometime in the Spring at tomorrow's hearing. In the meantime, defence attorneys who are still expecting more materials from prosecutors, will be submitting motions to the court within the next 60 days. These will likely include objections to some of the material.

By a narrow margin of about 4,300 votes, Arizona voters approved a ballot measure that would legalize medical marijuana, state election officials said Sunday.

With all precincts reporting, the yes votes on Proposition 203 have 50.1 percent of the vote to 49.8 percent of no votes, according to unofficial results posted on the Arizona Secretary of States website. More than 1.6 million votes were cast.

Officials in Maricopa County, where the city of Phoenix is located, posted their final update to the unofficial results from the November 2 election on Saturday. At the time, authorities said the race was too close to call.

The Marijuana Policy Project, in a statement, heralded the vote, saying it will allow patients who suffer from cancer, AIDS and other illnesses to use medical marijuana with a recommendation from their doctor.
Voters in Arizona have sided with science and compassion while dealing yet another blow to our nations cruel and irrational prohibition on marijuana, said Rob Kampia, Marijuana Policy Project executive director, in the statement. Arizonas law now reflects the mainstream public opinion that seriously ill people should not be treated like criminals if marijuana can provide them relief, and that doctors should be able to recommend marijuana to patients if they believe it can help alleviate their suffering.

The Marijuana Policy Project provided funding and support to the Arizona Medical Marijuana Policy Project, the group that ran the Proposition 203 campaign, the group said. The national organization bills itself as the United States largest marijuana policy reform organization, and says on its website it would like to see marijuana regulation similar to that of alcohol.

Since 1996, 14 other states and the District of Columbia have passed medical marijuana laws.

The proposition will allow the establishment of about 120 state-regulated clinics to dispense marijuana, according to the organization. Those living more than 25 miles from a clinic will be allowed to grow their own medicine.

Manny Pacquiao won the super-welterweight title over Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium on Saturday night. Is Floyd Mayweather Jr next????

untitled67.bmp

DALLAS: Manny Pacquiao captured the vacant WBC super-welterweight title with a punishing 12-round unanimous decision over Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium on Saturday night.

Filipino hero Pacquiao won on all three judges' scorecards as he inflicted a savage beating on Margarito and extended his winning streak to 13 fights.

''He is really strong,'' Pacquiao said of Margarito. ''I never expected him to be as strong as he was. He hurt me in the body and in the face. I am so lucky tonight.''

Pacquiao has shown little sign of losing speed and power as he moves up in weight to fight bigger and stronger opponents, but he failed to score the knockout on Saturday.

Even so, the bout didn't turn into the same kind of dull affair as Pacquiao's fight against Joshua Clottey at the same venue in March.

Unlike Clottey, Margarito came to fight. He paid the price with a nasty gash under the right eye and a huge welt that almost closed his left eye.

untitled68.bmp

At one point in the 11th round Pacquiao seemed to look towards referee Laurence Cole as if he was trying to get the ref to stop the fight.

''I feel for my opponent,'' Pacquiao said. ''His eyes [were swollen and cut] and *la*hdy face. I wanted the ref to look at that. In 12th round I wasn't looking for the knockout. My trainer said take it easy.''

Pacquiao, 31, entered the ring at 67.13kg while Margarito beefed up from 68.04kg at weigh-in to almost 75kg by fight time.

Pacquiao dominated Margarito from the outset to capture his eighth title in as many weight classes. He is also the first Asian to hold four or more major world titles.

The Mexican had his moments on Saturday and hurt Pacquiao in the eighth round when he landed a left uppercut on the button that snapped back Pacquiao's head.

Margarito was most effective when he had Pacquiao on the ropes but he failed to capitalise on his big height and weight advantage.

''We were going good until I got caught,'' Margarito said. ''And then that is when the problems started.''

Asked if he thought of quitting because of the punishment he was taking, he said, ''No, no way. I am Mexican and we fight until the end.''

Pacquiao earned close to $15 million while Margarito collected about $6 million.

It was Margarito's first fight in the United States since a one-year suspension after he was caught with plaster-filled hand wraps in his gloves before a fight against Shane Mosley.

Controversy erupted after a weight-loss supplement was reportedly seen in Margarito's dressing room before the fight, with Pacquiao's team demanding that he be tested for possible banned substances.

King said the cost of damage to the John Compton Dam, the islands main water source,

would be a few million dollars alone and the community of Fond St Jacques would have

to be declared a special enforcement area

HEAVY LOSSES: Windward Islands banana industry devastated by Tomas

Prime Minister Stephenson King says it could take up to US$500 million to repair the massive infrastructural damage caused by Hurricane Tomas just over a week ago, much more than he had initially estimated and significantly more than the island can afford.

He said that after scrutinizing the damage, he realised that the island will need a lot more to get back to normal and will not be able to do it alone.

The damage is so extensive to infrastructure, to property, to lives, that EC$100 million cannot do the job; its anything climbing to US$500 million, for what I have seen taking place here, he said.

King said the cost of damage to the John Compton Dam, the islands main water source, would be a few million dollars alone and the community of Fond St Jacques would have to be declared a special enforcement area, allowing for many of the residents to be moved to other areas.

That relocation, the Prime Minister said, would translate to new developments, new buildings, new housing, new infrastructure and utilities and, therefore, more money.

Water concerns as source cut off

The government has announced a water related emergency because a landslide in the western community of Roseau has left the John Compton Dam inaccessible.

While a national disaster has already been declared, the water emergency is a specific announcement in light of the implications for the island, which is under threat of a dwindling water supply, a government statement said. The Ministry of Health has issued strict sanitary protocols for use of water including boiling before drinking, washing of hands before food preparation and consumption and most importantly conservation of current supplies.

76786_445717405193_123712035193_5767072_8276942_n.jpg

The new water-related emergency declaration will allow law enforcement authorities to stop residents from using water for purposes such as watering lawns, washing vehicles, filling pools etc.

Prime Minister King said he has been encouraged by the response of the international community to St Lucias plight so far.

Most times international support is dependent on need rather than just giving, and there has been a lot of interest in our needs as to what we want exactly and what is required to enable us to reconstruct the country. So far the level of interest is extremely high in terms of actual monies coming in. We have already been able to trigger off a number of envelopes of assistance under disaster funds, he said.

King said the governments of Britain, the United States, France, Panama and several Caribbean nations have made contact to see how they can assist. After an initial assessment, the Catastrophic Caribbean Risk Insurance Fund (CCRIF) also indicated that St Lucia would benefit from an approximate US$3.2 million payout.

PM praises T&T leader for helping

Last Friday, under a cloud of controversy, Trinidad and Tobagos Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar visited the hurricane-hit island. She said she had already sent several containers of relief supplies to the island, as well as to St Vincent and the Grenadines which was also severely hit by Tomas.

I want to make it very clear, Mr Prime Minister, that we remain committed to assisting you here and the people of St Lucia. There are no strings attached to the humanitarian aid that we bring and will continue to send to you for reconstruction, she told King at a press conference, in obvious reference to criticism heaped on her since comments last week that her twin-island nation would have to benefit from providing aid to its neighbours affected by Tomas.

A day before her trip to St Lucia, Persad-Bissessar sought to clarify and expand on her comments, alleging she was misunderstood. The Trinidadian leader said at a press conference that day that her country would give humanitarian aid without preconditions, and that her government would source relief supplies from local partners and businesses and then pass them on to the affected countries, rather than sending T&T dollars to convert into US, which will then be used to buy materials somewhere else.

King said his country was grateful for whatever assistance Trinidad and Tobago could provide.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you for your practical commitment to St Lucia`s efforts at recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Tomas. Immediately after indicating to you our immediate concerns, within 24 hours you were able to put together a shipment of water particularly to commence your efforts in brining support to St Lucia, he said.

Banana industry out of commission

Meantime, agriculture officials are still counting the losses and are hoping to seize the opportunity created by Tomas devastation to further bolster the sector for sustainable growth.

Agriculture Minister Ezekiel Joseph said the banana industry, in particular, was completely wiped out and it could take up to eight months before it can be revived enough to resume exports.

As a country, we may be able to export bananas in May or June 2011, and that is dependent on what percentage of the fields are snapped (a snapped field is one where the neck of the mother plant is broken but the root is still standing), he said. If we have a higher percentage of snapped fields then we should be able to export by May or June 2011.

If there is need for total rehabilitation, as a Ministry we believe that we should capitalize on the opportunity for us to produce during a period when WINFRESH (formerly the Windward Islands Banana Development and Exporting Company) and the UK market have the demand for the product. So, whilst there are a lot of sad stories, there are opportunities for us as a country to capitalize on what is happening right now, he added.

Preliminary assessments have also shown that the livestock sector was also hard hit by Hurricane Tomas which came at a time when the entire agriculture industry was re-emerging from the effects of a recent drought.

Minister Joseph says the devastation caused by the natural disaster has made it even more important for government to scale up support for the industry.

The prime minister just recently made an allocation to provide support to our farmers livestock farmers, banana farmers and our fishermen. Right now we have to go back to the drawing board, he said.

We believe that whilst the situation is drastic, our farmers will be able to bounce back with the necessary support. Its not the first time we have experienced something like this; we know our farmers are capable of bouncing back, although this is the worst I have ever seen in my tenure within the agriculture sector. We will not surrender; I want to see this as an opportunity and I will capitalize on it.

Joseph says technical personnel from his ministry will conduct an in-depth assessment to ascertain the full extent of loss to the agriculture sector.

In addition to infrastructural and agriculture damage, Tomas claimed about 14 lives in St Lucia.

The Windward Islands bananas industry could suffer losses estimated at EC$80 million (US$29.6 million) over the next six months following the devastation to the sector caused by Hurricane Tomas last month, according to a senior official of the marketing and export company, WINFRESH.

Director of Technical Support Dr. Errol Reid said that exports to the international market could drop by at least 40,000 tonnes, for he remainder of the year, representing approximately 20 per cent of the exports for the 2010.

That represents production that will not be available for the rest of the year. Its a substantial loss which will last at least for the next six months, well into 2011.

At the Windwards level we are looking at EC$70 (US$25.9 million) to $80 million year per year of money earned by the islands, over seventy per cent of which would come from St. Lucia.

Reid said that bananas from the St. Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia, the two islands affected by the passage of the storm, are among the preferred fruit by United Kingdom consumers.

Agriculture Minister Ezekiel Joseph has said that it could be another eight months before the banana industry becomes viable.

Joseph said technical personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry and Fisheries will be conducting an in-depth assessment to ascertain the real extent of loss to the agriculture sector.

Tomas caused widespread damage in St Lucia and claimed at least 14 lives. Prime Minister King put the extent of the damage to the island at EC$500 million (US$185 million).

Seeing as Dave Kelly and Madhouse are seriously back in the game (with this and this), thought it might be the moment to have a little dip back into the Madhouse camp archive. Madhouse badgyal Spice is probably now best known for being Vybz's partner in crime on 'Ramping Shop', or for being Lisa Hype(r)'s rival but in the early 00s it was Dave Kelly that outed her as being a tuff MC, producing hits like 'Mi Gone' and then the insane 'Fight Over Man'

It was really her mad performances at Sting that lead her to Madhouse success, getting her on tour with Ward 21 and Cham (who introduced her to Kelly). I think to this day she is the only woman deejay to have destroyed a man on stage (sorry, Ele, somebody had to). Watch the footage below. Spice up your life!

Apparently its not safe to be signed to Diddyparty with Diddy, or even sit in the parking lot of his restaurant! Friday night at Justins in Atlanta 2 men were shot after attempting to elude an attempted car-jacking.

Saturday morning, police said a shooting victim, Lawrence Jackson, was listening to music in an SUV with two other men when a man with a gun jumped into the vehicle and shouted You know what time this is.

Jackson said he was injured as he tried to run away from the gunman as he opened fire. He was able to make it to his vehicle and drive to Piedmont Hospital.

Another man, Leroy Austin, was also injured in the shooting.

We think its safe to say that if youre not "Ready To Die", then it would be best to stay away from Diddy and his "Bad Boy" establishments. Maybe well see some Sean John made with Teflon on the runways in Paris for fashion week next year.

Free at last! As i write this the world is celebrating the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, held captive for 15 years by the ruthless military government of Myanmar/Burma. What a moment! There arent too many womenor men like Suu Kyi, willing to sacrifice their freedom of movement in the name of moral principle, something completely lacking in politics today. Suu Kyi is an Alma Mater of the college i went to in Delhi, the venerable Lady Sri Ram College, whose initials, LSR, were said to be synonymous with Love, Sex and Romance for male students at Delhi University. Clearly besides being a source of girlfriend material, LSR has also produced stellar leaders with the moral fibre of the invincible Aung San Suu Kyi.

Closer to home and the mundane, my daily trod was enlivened yesterday by a Skype interview with an Israeli journalist, Nirit Ben-Ari, who contacted me last week with the following request:

I will be honored and thankful if you interview with me for the article I am writing forHaaretz newspaper on dancehall culture in Jamaica.  I am mainly interested in your interpretation of the term Gaza and its possible implication of awareness of global politics. Do you think that the choice of the name Gaza represents a political awareness and identification with the underdog?  I am also interested in your view on the global gaze on dancehall culture and the dangers of misinterpreting and misunderstanding dancehall culture outside of Jamaica.  What do you think about the dissemination of dancehall images globally?

In response i sent her the paper i had given at the Reggae Studies Conference earlier this year: Eyeless in Gaza (and Gully): Mi deh pon di borderline;  essentially i was trying to document and comment on the effects of the feud between two of Jamaicas top DJs, Vybz Kartel (Gaza) and Mavado (Gully) that resulted in the words Gaza and Gully being spraypainted or otherwise inscribed on surfaces all over Kingston, but also in places like Trinidad, Barbados as well as Brooklyn, London and the generalized Jamaican diaspora. I excerpt a relevant bit from my paper below:

Etymology of Gaza in the Jamaican context

It is commonplace in Jamaica for impoverished urban areas to be informally named after locations known globally as war zones. Thus there are locales named Angola, Tel Aviv, Vietnam and of course Gaza. In a widely publicized interview between Cliff Hughes, a prominent local journalist, and Vybz Kartel on TV Jamaicas Impact which aired on November 12, 2009, Hughes asked Kartel why he had chosen the name Gaza for his area, and what the frequently uttered phrase Gaza mi seh meant. Kartel who often refers to himself in the third person responded:

Gaza mi seh means Fight for what you believe in against all odds, against all adversity. When I left the Alliance Vybz Kartel came under so much pressure, I said to Black Rhino and others we need to form a group. But we need a perfect name. The first war was just happening in Gaza, Israel was bombarding them but the people were fighting back regardless, and Vybz Kartel said to Laing (Isaiah Laing, prominent promoter associated with the annual Sting show), were going to use that name coz it means to medem people deh serious and dem nah back down.

Interestingly, Kartel steered clear of the reason he felt obliged to look for a suitable name for the Portmore community associated with him, in the first place.  The backstory is an interesting one umbilically connected to the complicated discourse around masculinity and sexuality in Jamaica. Yet the details of why the community of Borderline in Portmore came to be rechristened Gaza is one the media had never considered noteworthy enough to mention let alone dwell on.

Those who wish to know more can read my blogpost on the subject where Gazas bizarre link to homosexuality in Jamaica is recorded.

But back to yesterday, I cant tell you how cool it was to be sitting in my living room in Kingston talking directly to Nirit in Tel Aviv, complete with images of ourselves and the rooms we were in. Viva Skype!

Nirit explained that she had wanted to read Carolyn Cooper and Donna Hopes books on dancehall culture but they werent available in Tel Aviv and she had ordered them on Amazon but hadnt recieved them yet. In the meantime someone referred her to my blog which is why she asked me to help her with the background on the use of the word Gaza in dancehall culture. Interestingly Nirit works for an NGO named Gisha an Israeli not-for-profit organization, founded in 2005, whose goal is to protect the freedom of movement of Palestinians, especially Gaza residents.

gazasafepassage-php.jpg?w=300&h=150

How do you get from Gaza to Ramallah? Play "Safe Passage"

Like Aung San Suu Kyi the Palestinians have had their freedom of movement severely curtailed by the state of Israel. As the Gisha website explains:

Since the 1967 occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Israels military has developed a complex system of rules and sanctions to control the movement of the 3.4 million Palestinians who live there. The restrictions violate the fundamental right of Palestinians to freedom of movement. As a result, additional basic rights are violated, including the right to life, the right to access medical care, the right to education, the right to livelihood, the right to family unity and the right to freedom of religion.

Gisha, whose name means both access and approach, uses legal assistance and public advocacy to protect the rights of Palestinian residents. Because freedom of movement is a precondition for exercising other basic rights, Gishas work has a multiplier effect in helping residents of the occupied territories access education, jobs, family members and medical care.

Funnily Nirit told me that a Palestinian friend of hers got a chance to spend two months in Jamaica and was exulting at the thought of getting away from it all to a tropical island far from the rigours of life in Gaza, only to arrive in Kingston and find the word Gaza graffiti-ed all over the city.

Vybz Kartel was certainly aware of and sympathetic to the Palestinian cause but sympathetic is actually too weak a word to describe the admiration he expressed for the people of Gaza in that interview with Cliff Hughes: dem people deh serious and dem nah back down and Gaza mi seh means Fight for what you believe in against all odds, against all adversity. On the other hand im not sure how widespread Kartels view of the Palestinians is. Could one say that most of Dancehalls core constituents (to use Ragashantis apt term) are sympathetic to those trapped in Gaza? I dont know.

What i do know is that Jamaican dancehalls focus on Gaza has had an interesting ripple effect. When i tweeted a few days ago about being contacted by an Israeli journalist about the name Gaza in the Jamaican context one of my tweeple, Sweden-based @johannakey said Ive done a story on the same subject. Theres a Swedish song about it here. The song Real Gaza mi seh! is so addictive i cant get it out of my head. Its a beautiful song, in which connections are made between Gaza and universal oppression using the vehicle of dancehall and the refrain If you kill one of us, you kill all of us listen to it below:

Eyes of the world pon the Gaza mi seh
Well dem say Gaza, dem say Gully
dem say Congo and Kinshasa
Everywhere i turn i see pure passa passa
I remember Kid Fruss?? used to talk about La Raca
Its all tribal warpeoplei cant take it any longer

Hopefully one day the residents of Gaza willlike Aung San Suu Kyiregain their freedom. Till then Gaza mi seh!

Zhang Chuanqiu, a 27-year-old Chinese man, is hoping to save his hands after he was shackled so tightly in an illegal prison in Hunan that his flesh grew over the chains, the Austrian Times is reporting. According to the paper, Chuanqiu says he is in terrible pain due to the wounds:

"They cause me a lot of pain. They are always inflamed and ooze pus all the time. But we have no money so I have to rely on charity or the good heart of a hospital or doctor to save my hands."

Chuanqiu was imprisoned after a falling out over a loan he was using to build his house. He was chained in a cowshed in 2005, says BuzzFeed. He needs a surgery that will cost about $1,600 to remove the chains and to avoid further infection.

The only person who did not give up on me was my mother who waited for her time and rescued me, he explained.

A nurse/midwife was stabbed to her face and had acid thrown on her in a brutal attack at her workplace at the Georgetown Public Hospital last evening.

Ursula Houston of Laing Avenue was admitted to the Burn Care Unit of the hospital following the attack. Her attacker, a former lover, fled and was being sought by police. He stabbed Houston over her left eye with a broken bottle and threw acid on her, hospital sources told Stabroek News. She suffered burns to her face, left hand and other parts of her exposed upper body, this newspaper was told.

The attack occurred at around 7:30 pm at the Maternity Unit where Houston worked. She was stepping out of the nurses room at Ward 5 when the man pounced. The attacker goes by the nickname Thousand, law enforcement officials said. According to reports, Houston broke off a relationship with the man and apparently he could not deal with it.

When this newspaper visited the Laing Avenue home of Houston, a relative, Abbiola said that she had just received the news and did not know much. However, she said that Houston had worked at the hospital for a number of years and was in her 40s.

She confirmed that Houston knew Thousand. Houston has one child who is overseas.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Panic broke out at the Moruga Composite School yesterday as 17 female students fell mysteriously ill and began rolling on the ground, hissing and blabbering in a strange tongue, after suffering bouts of nausea and headaches. Two of the students reportedly tried to throw themselves off a railing and had to be physically restrained, triggering fears of a possible demon attack. The drama started during the lunch hour in the Form One block and quickly spread to other areas. Form Five student Kern Mollineau, who attends the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church, said he got worried when the girls eyes began rolling up in their heads and they began beating up on the ground.

With the assistance of several other students and teachers, the pupils were taken to the multi-purpose hall where some of them fell into a semi-conscious state. Mollineau recalled: One girl was blabbering as if in a strange language. I could not understand what she was saying. It was sounding like shebbaberbebeb shhhhee. The girls were unusually strong. We had to hold them down so that they will not hurt themselves. The teachers were right there. I get a kick in my face when one of the girls started beating up on the floor. Many of them had bruises. Mollineau claimed he actually communicated with the devil which had possessed the girl. I asked the Devil what he wanted with the girls and the voice said he wanted a life. He kept saying to send the girls in the toilet and to leave them alone, Mollineau claimed.

Roman Catholic priests, as well as pastors from nearby churches, including Josephine Charles, Deborah Charles and Pastor Gordon, visited the school and began showering the children with holy water and prayers. Two more students, Kriston Mollineau and Kishon Bethel, said they too were called by teachers to assist the ill girls. Kriston said the girls complained of headaches and some of them wanted to go to the toilet. Six ambulances arrived at the school accompanied by police teams from the Moruga and St Marys Police Post. A party of fire officers from the Princes Town Fire Station, led by acting Assistant Divisional Fire Officer Ramdeo Boodoo visited the school and began conducting several tests on the surroundings to determine the cause of the problem.

Boodoo said there was nothing in the environment to trigger fainting spells, nausea and headaches. A teacher, who requested anonymity, said two weeks ago an Orisha woman came to the school and had a dispute with a member of staff. He said following the dispute, the woman threatened to deal with the school administration. Another teacher said the school was built on a burial site, but neighbours who live around the school denied that was so. A source at the school confirmed that all 17 pupils were taken to the Princes Town Health Facility where they were medically examined. The other students were sent home at 2 pm.

Responding yesterday, Minister in the Ministry of Education Clifton de Coteau said he was aware that pupils had to be taken for medical attention. De Coteau said Student Support Service officials were sent to the school and students were expected to receive counselling. A statement from the Ministry of Education said the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC) made maxi taxis available to the school to assist the Office for Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) which provided additional ambulances.

Rock music ..heavy metal is perhaps one of the most extreme in terms of the dress code and culture of the chracters of all the genre of music. Now the Jamaican dysfuntional artiste, the wacko jacko of Jamaican dancehall music.. Vybz Kartel has added a few more tattoos and gotten a hell of a lot lighter in tone... He is very much coined a freak at times and has to do with the fact that its not easy on the eyes at all... parentel discretion is advised before looking at Vybz Kartel these days... he is more or less unrecognisable..and way beyond scrawny.

$5 Million Dollar fine for Payola

Payola.jpg
Payola is the practice of paying  the player of the music usually a radio disc jock a lump sum to play a particular piece of music, giving it special attention, wheel-ups, wheel and come agains as well as making extra mention of the its production and how the tune bad ans so on and so forth
There will be in the near future a punishment of up to JA$5 Million for persons who act as mercenaries when it comes on to playing music on the nations airwaves. The Jamaican Broadcast Commission is taking steps to enact laws to expel the practice. Payola is nothing new and is always seem to be a taboo topic in the radio industry. For sound system selectas these days no-one is too sure what's the motive for playing a tune more often than the other, is it the selectas affiliation to a group, the selectas being threatened or crowd demand or the plain and simple that tracks are played because they are pleasing to the ear.

"Welcome home, Weezy!" the rap star's Facebook page proclaimed, using one of his nicknames, after his morning release from the Rikers Island jail complex. He was freed at a location jail officials and his lawyer wouldn't disclose. His managers have said he planned to head for his home in Miami, where they're planning a welcome-home party Sunday. "I was never scared, worried nor bothered by the situation" behind bars, Lil Wayne said Tuesday through Weezythanxyou.com, a website he set up to give fans a glimpse of his life in jail. Lil Wayne, who had the best-selling album of 2008 and won a best rap album Grammy with "Tha Carter III," kept his career in high gear while locked up for having a loaded gun on his tour bus in 2007. His latest album, "I Am Not a Human Being" released while he was in solitary confinement in September hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart last month. He also was featured on a string of hits by other artists, including Drake and Eminem, that came out while he was incarcerated and he recorded a verse for the Drake/Jay-Z collaboration "Light Up" over on the phone for a "Rikers Remix" that made the rounds online. President Barack Obama recently told Rolling Stone he has some Lil Wayne music on his iPod. And former President Bill Clinton praised the rapper's abilities during a phone interview with a Pittsburgh radio station Tuesday, adding that "what I hope will happen is that he has a good life now." Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Carter Jr., pleaded guilty in October 2009 to attempted weapon possession, admitting he'd had a loaded, semiautomatic .40-caliber gun on his bus after a Manhattan concert. He started a yearlong sentence in March but got time off for good behavior, despite a disciplinary knock that sent him to solitary for the last month of his term. A charger and headphones for a digital music player were found in his cell in May, jail officials said. The items are considered contraband. The rapper later acknowledged the misstep on his Weezythanxyou site, where his associates typed up and posted periodic letters he wrote on topics ranging from his daily Rikers routine to new songs he'd heard and liked on the radio. He also provided specific, individual responses to some of the fan mail that flooded his cell and became, he said, a source of cheer behind bars. "I laughed with some of you, reasoned with some of you, and even cried with some of you," he wrote in a letter posted Tuesday. "I never imagined how much impact my words and life can have." But he assured fans the impact hasn't completely changed an artist known for ingenious work that sometimes borders on weird: "I will be the same Martian I was when I left, just better." A few die-hard fans huddled in the pre-dawn rain Thursday outside the Rikers complex, hoping to get a glimpse of him. Anthony Smith, 19, had driven there from Woodbury, N.Y., about 55 miles north of the city. "I feel that his words mean something. ... He just has a gift," Smith said. He had left Woodbury around 1 a.m. after finishing a night shift at his retail job with his twin sister, Jess, and a couple of friends. "I don't do this for just anyone," Jess Smith said. A rapper since his childhood, New Orleans-born Lil Wayne released his first solo album, "Tha Block Is Hot," in 1999. His hits include "Got Money," "Lollipop," and "A Milli." Lil Wayne, who turned 28 in jail, envisions recording new music and releasing a long-rumored "Tha Carter IV" next year, and he may also make a book out of a journal he kept in jail, according to his managers and associates. But his priorities at the moment are spending time with his family he has four children and the Cash Money Records labelmates to whom he often refers as family, too. "Family first ... then back to business," Cash Money co-founder Bryan "Birdman" Williams said in an interview last week.

MediaTakeOut.com just learned that there is a SCANDAL brewing amongst the cast of the TV show The Game. Because BET, the new network home of The Game has decided to pay actress BRITTANY DANIEL as much as TWICE the salary of her castmembers.

Here's what we know. A SNITCH who works with the cast told MediaTakeOut.com that these are the OFFICIAL salaries of the actors of the show:

Tia Mowry (as Melanie Barnett) - $50K per episode
Pooch Hall (as Derwin Davis) - $40K per episode
Coby Bell (as Jason Pitts) - $35K per episode
Wendy Raquel Robinson (as Tasha Mack) - $35K per episode
Hosea Chanchez (as Malik Wright) - $35K per episode
Brittany Daniel (as Kelly Pitts) - $75K per episode

Well why is Brittany making more than her OTHER actors, including seasoned actress Tia Mowry. The insider explained, "The 'offiicial' word is that Brittany had to turn down another show to sign on, and so she's being compensated for that." The insider continued, "But that's crazy, everyone had another project that they could have done."

And let's just say that her CASTMATES are NOT ONE BIT happy knowing how much Brittany is making . . . Sounds like DRAMA's around the corner.
