For the second consecutive year, The Gleaner Company, the Urban Development Corporation, the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation and the JamaicaChamber of Commerce have joined forces to stage 'Christmas in the City: Downtown comes Alive', a shopping extravangaza like no other.

New to the team this year is the drink Boom, from the Wisynco group.

This year's staging will be even better than last year's, with many more stores signing on to participate, and of course, a greater awareness about the initiative. The great sale will get underway about 10 a.m. on Wednesday and will run throughout the day until 10 p.m.

Shoppers will also be entertained throughout the night with a fashion show as well as a stage show, which will run from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The stage show, sponsored by Boom, will feature top-notch entertainers like Beenie Man, Tarrus Riley, Ce'Cile, Khago and Shady Squad. The show will be hosted by the 'fluffy diva', Miss Kitty.

The fashion show, which will showcase clothing sold by the vendors downtown, as well as hairstyles created by the cosmetologists from the area, will be displayed by models from Saint International and promises to be an entertaining showcase.

Over 30 stores will be participating in this year's promotion, which means even more discounts for shoppers this year. Not to be left out are the shrimp, bammy and pet fish vendors who also ply their wares downtown. They too are included in the festivities. The police will also be on hand to maintain order, so shoppers can feel secure as they move about. So come out and enjoy the experience.

Deejay Mr Lexx is back in the island today after spending more than a year in New York.

His manager, Earlton Clarke, yesterday told THE STAR that the deejay had boarded his flight to Jamaica last night and is expected to return safely into the island. Lexx, born Christopher Palmer, has been missing from the local scene since October last year when he was arrested after a woman reported to the police that he sexually molested her.

It was reported that the woman was in her room at a hotel in Queens, New York, when the deejay forced himself on her. The police arrested the deejay the following morning. Since the incident occurred, the deejay's travel documents were seized and he has been unable to leave the United States.

After making several court appearances, the felony charges were dropped against the deejay in April. His attorney, Mark Potashnick, previously told THE STAR that the deejay was required to serve three days of community service and to show this as proof at a later date to the court.

His passport, the lawyer commented, will also be returned and he will be allowed to travel back to Jamaica.

While in the United States, Lexx was kept busy recording new material, and even venturing into new territories such as modelling and acting. Lexx recorded songs such as Buss a Wine, I Can Transform Ya and Let It Pop featuring Esco. He can also be seen in films such as 'Wha Do Dem' and 'Out The Gate'.

Mr Lexx came to prominence as Lexxus and enjoyed hits with songs like Good Hole, Bounce Ah Gyal, Full Hundred and Taxi Fare, to name a few. While his single Dem a Pree climbs the charts, the artiste also reportedly worked on a collaboration with one of the members from the G-Unit camp.

A new Beenie Man song entitled Father God Help Them has been creating quite a stir in the dancehall as many have deemed it as a diss song for fellow deejay Vybz Kartel.

The song has been getting plenty of listenership on the video sharing website, Youtube and has been attracting numerous comments from listeners. In the song, Beenie Man sings, "change mi skin colour that me naw do ... you see the freak thing, that me nah do ...".

In another line, he sings, "a fight over style weh mi grandma mek/Oh awoww!, yuh no hear nothing yet/before Clarks a beat, man a wear Gator crep,".

However, Beenie Man's manager, 'Blue', told THE STAR in a telephone interview yesterday that the song is not a diss song as many are making it out to be, but it is actually "a correction" to an earlier song which Vybz Kartel did on the same rhythm. "It's not really a disrespect and him no diss Kartel, ano disrespect," Blue explained.

He said Beenie is simply trying to defend the honour of dancehall music and protect it and its pioneers as he merely disagreed with some of the things Kartel said in his song in regards to the 'styles' he claims he created.

In Vybz Kartel's song, 'Dancehall Hero', Kartel apparently refers to himself as the 'big man' in dancehall whom every other artiste wants to emulate as he is the trend-setter. In that song, Kartel says, "the whole a dem a watch the teach" and says "every style me mek dem want one ... call up me name just fi get a forward,". In another line Kartel deejays, "me no memba no dj bwoy, dem si down pon me name like back pocket rag ... Vybz Kartel mek the whole a dem a mad,".

Contacted yesterday, Vybz Kartel seemed unconcerned about Beenie's new song. "Heard about it, never heard it, not interested," he said.

Asked if he had a brewing feud with Beenie Man he replied, "the only thing I have brewing is Street Vybz rum at the factory".

Oprah Winfrey says she's not a lesbian, not even a little bit.

Her long personal and professional connection with Gayle King has sparked rumours that they are gay, but Winfrey denies it in an upcoming interview with ABC television's Barbara Walters.

"I'm not even kind of a lesbian," Winfrey says.

Persistent gossip to the contrary annoys her, she says, explaining that, if it were true, "Why would you want to hide it? That is not the way I run my life."

Asked to describe her relationship with King, Winfrey calls her "the mother I never had, the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves." Winfrey's eyes moisten and her voice chokes as she adds, "I don't know a better person."

Winfrey will end her daytime talk show next spring and, on Jan. 1, is launching a cable channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network.

That new venture has given her moments of panic.

"I would wake up in the middle of the night literally like cl**tching my chest, like, 'What have I done?'" she tells Walters.

Cops warn public about BlackBerry thieves The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is warning cellular phones users, especially BlackBerry users to be aware when using their phones as they are being increasingly targeted by thieves. In a release from the JCF it said during "the holiday season, when large crowds are on the roads, provide prime opportunities for thieves to target unsuspecting individuals." The JCF released the following precautions for cell phone users: · Avoid displaying your phone in public wherever possible. Set your phone to vibrate if possible to attract less attention and never leave it lying around. · Many people use their mobile phones at bus stops and stations thieves know this, so if you need to make a call, be aware of your surroundings. · Try not to walk and talk. · Always use the phones security lock or PIN number. · Use headsets as little as possible when in public places; as this reduces you ability to hear what is happening in your surroundings. · If using your cell phone when driving, be careful when at stoplights. Keep your windows closed or if they are open, try to ensure that thieves are not able to push their hands in to grab your phone. · Keep a record of the unique reference number (IMEI) on your phone, if supplied with this some networks can permanently disable the handset if it is stolen. · Register the phone with the Service Provider. Presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama has condemned an endorsement song from Ludacris, in which the Atlanta MC criticizes rivals Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

The song Politics: Obama Is Here contains celebratory bars on Obamas success (The first is destined and its meant to be), but turns venomous when Obamas rivals are addressed.

Ludacris references the bitter Democratic primary battle by stating Hillary hated on you/So that b**ch is irrelevant.

Regarding Republican nominee John McCain, the rapper rhymes:

McCain dont belong in ANY chair unless hes paralyzed/ Yeah I said it cause Bush is mentally handicapped/ Ball up all of his speeches and I throw em like candy wrap.

Through his campaign team, Senator Obama released a statement condemning the song as offensive and typical of much of Hip-Hops current lyrical content.

As Barack Obama has said many, many times in the past, rap lyrics today too often perpetuate misogyny, materialism, and degrading images that he doesnt want his daughters or any children exposed to, explained spokesman Bill Burton. This song is not only outrageously offensive to Senator Clinton, Reverend Jackson, Senator McCain, and President Bush, it is offensive to all of us who are trying to raise our children with values we hold dear. While Ludacris is a talented individual he should be ashamed of these lyrics.

Previously Obama once that Ludacris music received heavy rotation in his iPod, a point also acknowledged in the song when the rapper says:

With a slot in the presidents iPod Obama shattered em/ Said I handled his biz and Im one of his favorite rappers."

Ludacris could not be reached for comment at press time.

The sight of Beenie Man and Vybz Kartel on the Jamworld stage battling a barrage of boos this morning underlined the mood of the nation since Sumfest - that the majority has definitely swung to Alliance/Gully.

In the wake of Killer's lyrical bullets that have pierced Vybz Kartel's armour and delivered crushing blows in recent days, the Champions in Action crowd was anticipating the 5 Star General's performance and he did not disappoint. This show will go down in history as Bounty Killer and Mavado had the crowd in utter pandemonium at around 7am Sunday morning.

During their performance Vybz Kartel could take it no longer and left Beenie on stage to face the boos alone, and despite the boos growing in decibels and Beenie's attempts to draw out the show and force the people to tire and leave, not one person walked out of Jamworld until they got what they came for: the Alliance in full effect.

A special commission is set to review the results of Haitis presidential elections that have sparked deadly protests.

The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced yesterday that it had ordered a "rapid and exceptional" review of the results against the background of the clear dissatisfaction of many voters, protests and violence.

Since the CEP announced on Tuesday night that former first lady Mirlande Manigat and the candidate of the ruling Inite party, Jude Célestin, would go forward to a January run-off after none of the candidates got a clear majority in the polls, thousands of Haitians particularly those in support of popular musician Michel Sweet Micky Martelly who was identified as a frontrunner in unofficial polls have taken to the streets of the capital and other cities to protest. They have accused outgoing president René Préval and his handpicked successor, Célestin, of rigging the results.

The special commission will verify the tally sheets of votes cast for Manigat, who came out on top in the first round results; Célestin, who unofficial polls had said was not even in the running; and Martelly, who the CEP said was less than a percent behind Célestin.

The commission will include national and international observers and representatives of the three candidates.

The candidates have welcomed the move.

The CEP is expected to confirm the preliminary results of the first round on December 20th before a runoff can go ahead next month.

There have been calls within and outside the country for Haitians and the candidates they support to allow the dispute to be resolved through the legal channels.

Protestors have set up burning barricades, blocking off parts of the capital and nearby areas; set fire to the ruling Inites party headquarters; attacked public buildings, shops, a radio station belonging to a legislative candidate of the ruling party; and clashed with security forces. Supporters of opposing candidates have also clashed themselves.

The unrest has left five people dead, several others injured, and forced a virtual shutdown of some parts of the country.

Calls for calm and end to violence continue to go unheeded in Haiti as riots sparked by preliminary election results continue, leaving at least three dead and several other people injured.

French media agency AFP quoted former Haitian senator Gabriel Fortune as saying that three young protestors were shot dead in clashes in the southern town of Les Cayes, about 200 kilometres south of the capital. There were also unconfirmed reports that a fourth person was killed in armed clashes in the nearby city of Cap-Haïtien.

It is unclear whether the victims were shot by law enforcement officials or other protestors.

Thousands of demonstrators have been roaming the streets with weapons, setting up burning barricades, and looting. Yesterday, they set fire to the headquarters of the ruling Inite party, and attacked several shops, a post of the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSTAH, and a radio station owned by a Senate candidate with the ruling candidate, Carlos Lebon.

The unrest, which prompted many businesses in the capital to close yesterday, followed Tuesday nights announcement by the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) that President Rene Prévals handpicked successor, Jude Celestin, and former first lady Mirlande Manigat would go forward to a runoff next month to choose President Prévals successor.

Thousands of Haitians are outraged that popular musician Michel Sweet Micky Martelly was not included in the runoff, especially after he was identified as a front runner in unofficial polls. They have claimed fraud, accusing Prévals party of rigging the results.

International observers have also questioned the results. The United States Embassy in Haiti said, in a statement issued after the announcement by the CEP, that the results were inconsistent with results published by the National Election Observation Council, which had more than 5,500 observers witnessing the vote count in 1,600 polls around the country, as well as other international and domestic observers.

Martelly, who is challenging the results, has urged his supporters to refrain from violence following the deaths, but he urged them to continue protesting.

But the joint Organisation of American States (OAS)/Caribbean Community (CARICOM) mission has stressed that the results were only preliminary and urged stakeholders to use the legal remedies provided by the Electoral Law rather than turn to violence.

Once the challenges by candidates have been dealt with, the final results of the first round of the legislative and presidential elections will be announced on December 20th.

The Mission deplores the ongoing violent demonstrations, the observers said in a statement. Candidates and political leaders should urge their supporters to stay calm in order to create the peaceful environment necessary for a meaningful dialogue as well as to facilitate the constructive approach offered by the legal recourses of the Electoral Law which is an integral part of the Rule of Law.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and outgoing President Préval have also appealed for calm and order.

ZJ Chromes Smokin riddim has been buzzing since it hit the airwaves a couple weeks ago, but one song in particular on the riddim has generated tremendous interest Mavados Stulla. Whats a Stulla? is the rhetoric question of the day from many who have heard the song, and an obvious definition is that a Stulla is a man whose sexual prowess is unquestionable.

A source decided however to ask Mavado himself about the song, and the answer was simple the definition is as implied, and Stulla was not a new slang that was picked up on the streets, its not something that ever really existed before (although he had previously mentioned it in another song), it was simply a term that he originated, and decided to make a song out of it.

Now the Stulla joins Stamina Daddy, Wukaman and the numerous other Jamaican/dancehall terms that have been used over the years in reference to male sexual prowess.

Isaiah Laing says Vybz Kartel, Sting and Laing are like brothers... Kartel will be at Sting..  Whilst Kartel is saying that he will be in The Building come December 26th.. and perhaps the only Kartel that will be at Sting this year is Food Kartel . Laing further indicated in a report that it might be situation where Vybz Kartel may join Beenie Man and Bounty Killer on stage.

For Those of Us Who Grew up on Nutmeg The Question isReally? Can one really get high on nutmeg, a spice which is often used ito spice up porridge, add flavor to an assortment of drinks, baked goods or to settle an upset stomach? Well it seems that some adventurous ones have ventured into the get high zone with the said spice. A sprinkle of nutmeg in can add the perfect flavor to some dishes. But islanders favorite spice has also made headlines as an unconventional way of getting high -- it's called a nutmeg high.

Nutmeg contains myristicin, a natural compound that has mind-altering effects if ingested in large doses. The buzz can last one to two days and can be hallucinogenic, much like LSD.

According to reports from the Florida Poison Information Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital has recently seen a small spike in phone calls reporting people who snorted, smoked or ate the spice.

"It's the flavor of the month," said Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, medical director at the center. "But most people only try it once because they have such nasty side effects. The rewards are not worth the risks."

 

About 30 minutes to an hour after taking large doses of nutmeg, people usually have severe gastrointestinal reactions, including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. But that's just the beginning. Hours into the high, people can suffer from heart and nerve problems as well.

"This is where people have to be really alert," said Gaylord Lopez, director of the Georgia Poison Center in Atlanta. "A person who has an unrecognized heart ailment could have problems that could lead to irregular rhythms. One plus one can add up to nine really quickly."

Visual, auditory or sensory hallucinations do not set in until hours after ingesting the spice, so there is also the worry that someone could overdose, thinking they haven't taken enough to feel anything.

Dr. Marcel Casavant, medical director of the Central Ohio Poison Center at Nationwide Children's Hospital, said that it is fairly common for teenagers to experiment with household products to get high. And the results can be devastating.

According to sources and students the beloved Bronx teacher who was trying to break up a fight suffered a miscarriage after she was hit.

The teacher, who was four months pregnant, was said to be teaching her fifth period Spanish class at Exploration Academy in the Claremont section of the Bronx when the assault occurred.

As the story is told, a student who arrived five minutes late, walked up to another student who was already seated and told him to get out of his desk.

On that student refusal, the conflict escalated and the teacher tried to intervene. She was accidentally elbowed in the stomach and fell to the ground, crying.

"This is a very sad incident and my heart goes out to [the teacher] and her family," Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott said in a statement.

 

In a separate incident Thursday, a 49-year-old teacher was punched in the eye by a 14-year-old eighth grader at Junior High School 45 in East Harlem. The teacher got a black eye and was treated at Weil Cornell Medical Center, cops said. The student was arrested for assault and has been suspended.

And in a third incident, a ruckus shook the hallways of Murray Bergtraum School in Manhattan.

The principal threatened to stop issuing bathroom passes if kids kept getting into fights, prompting students to organize a riot between 5th and 6th period.

One student was injured and sent to the hospital, and several others are being disciplined.

"I've been teaching since 1986," said chapter leader John Elfrank-Dana, "and I've never seen anything like it."

Obama gets mad! and kicks this door open! crazy footage!!

President Barack Obama kicks open a door after a press conference on this incredibly funny video. It is such a shock to see the president being his normal self and begin to walk out the door which he suddenly kicks open. It can only lead to shock and laughter because it is so funny.

Obviously the Obama kicks door video is doctored, but at first glance it was a pretty good edit. If you arent paying very close attention, you might actually think it is real. The clip actually aired on Jay Lenos The Tonight Show, and it got plenty of laughs. Now, the doctored clip is getting plenty of press.

Producer Russian to host event in Trinidad

Young dancehall and Head Concussion Records producer, Tarik Johnston, who goes by the moniker 'Russian', left the island on Wednesday for Trinidad and Tobago.

The move is to host an event dubbed 'berCooler' which is slated for December 18 at Peir 1 Chaguaramas in Trinidad and Tobago. Russian, who also recently returned to the island after performing in Trinidad with Chan Dizzy, Aidonia, JOP and Conci, is excited about hosting an event in Trinidad.

Being away hasn't stopped Russian from continuing to create an impact on the local music scene, as Russian released two singles before leaving the island: Konshens' Bed Room General and Mr Vegas' Ghetto Girl, which has been dominating local radio stations.

Come December 18, Pier 1 will come alive for the biggest water event to hit Trinidad, as Russian plans to execute this with the Trinidadian promoters and he is also working with Head Concussion Records public relations manager Bradley Richards.

"This will be my first event in Trinidad and I'm going to make my set as enjoyable as possible. Early bird tickets were sold out two days after being released so you know the event is going to be hot," said Russian.

Adding: "My fans here have been extremely supportive so I really want to make it a great experience for them. This event will also feature Trinidad's top djs such as DJ Red, Lubrz, Mazel and DJ Tech just to name a few."

Veiled beneath the Persian Gulf, a once-fertile landmass may have supported some of the earliest humans outside Africa some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago, a new review of research suggests.

At its peak, the floodplain now below the Gulf would have been about the size of Great Britain, and then shrank as water began to flood the area. Then, about 8,000 years ago, the land would have been swallowed up by the Indian Ocean, the review scientist said.

The study, which is detailed in the December issue of the journal Current Anthropology, has broad implications for aspects of human history. For instance, scientists have debated over when early modern humans exited Africa, with dates as early as 125,000 years ago and as recent as 60,000 years ago (the more recent date is the currently accepted paradigm), according to study researcher Jeffrey Rose, an archaeologist at the University of Birmingham in the U.K.

"I think Jeff's theory is bold and imaginative, and hopefully will shake things up," Robert Carter of Oxford Brookes University in the U.K. told LiveScience. "It would completely rewrite our understanding of the out-of-Africa migration. It is far from proven, but Jeff and others will be developing research programs to test the theory."

Viktor Cerny of the Archaeogenetics Laboratory, the Institute of Archaeology, in Prague, called Rose's finding an "excellent theory," in an e-mail to LiveScience, though he also points out the need for more research to confirm it.

The findings have sparked discussion among researchers, including Carter and Cerny, who were allowed to provide comments within the research paper, about who exactly the humans were who occupied the Gulf basin.

"Given the presence of Neanderthal communities in the upper reaches of the Tigris and Euphrates River, as well as in the eastern Mediterranean region, this may very well have been the contact zone between moderns and Neanderthals," Rose told LiveScience. In fact, recent evidence from the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome suggests interbreeding, meaning we are part caveman.

Watery refuge

The Gulf Oasis would have been a shallow inland basin exposed from about 75,000 years ago until 8,000 years ago, forming the southern tip of the Fertile Crescent, according to historical sea-level records.

And it would have been an ideal refuge from the harsh deserts surrounding it, with fresh water supplied by the Tigris, Euphrates, Karun and Wadi Baton Rivers, as well as by upwelling springs, Rose said. And during the last ice age when conditions were at their driest, this basin would've been at its largest.

In fact, in recent years, archaeologists have turned up evidence of a wave of human settlements along the shores of the Gulf dating to about 7,500 years ago.

"Where before there had been but a handful of scattered hunting camps, suddenly, over 60 new archaeological sites appear virtually overnight," Rose said. "These settlements boast well-built, permanent stone houses, long-distance trade networks, elaborately decorated pottery, domesticated animals, and even evidence for one of the oldest boats in the world."

Rather than quickly evolving settlements, Rose thinks precursor populations did exist but have remained hidden beneath the Gulf. [History's Most Overlooked Mysteries]

"Perhaps it is no coincidence that the founding of such remarkably well developed communities along the shoreline corresponds with the flooding of the Persian Gulf basin around 8,000 years ago," Rose said. "These new colonists may have come from the heart of the Gulf, displaced by rising water levels that plunged the once fertile landscape beneath the waters of the Indian Ocean."

Ironclad case?

The most definitive evidence of these human camps in the Gulf comes from a new archaeological site called Jebel Faya 1 within the Gulf basin that was discovered four years ago. There, Hans-Peter Uerpmann of the University of Tubingen in Germany found three different Paleolithic settlements occurring from about 125,000 to 25,000 years ago. That and other archaeological sites, Rose said, indicate "that early human groups were living around the Gulf basin throughout the Late Pleistocene."

To make an ironclad case for such human occupation during the Paleolithic, or early Stone Age, of the now-submerged landmass, Rose said scientists would need to find any evidence of stone tools scattered under the Gulf. "As for the Neolithic, it would be wonderful to find some evidence for human-built structures," dated to that time period in the Gulf, Rose said.

Carter said in order to make for a solid case, "we would need to find a submerged site, and excavate it underwater. This would likely only happen as the culmination of years of survey in carefully selected areas."

Cerny said a sealed-tight case could be made with "some fossils of the anatomically modern humans some 100,000 years old found in South Arabia."

And there's a hint of mythology here, too, Rose pointed out. "Nearly every civilization living in southern Mesopotamia has told some form of the flood myth. While the names might change, the content and structure are consistent from 2,500 B.C. to the Genesis account to the Qur'anic version," Rose said.

Perhaps evidence beneath the Gulf? "If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family Anatidae on our hands," said Rose, quoting Douglas Adams.

Although a number of persons have been saying that producer Stephen McGregor is 'fighting against' young artistes by voicing gibberish on the instrumentals of some of his recent rhythms, the producer says this is not the case.

On two of his recent releases, 'Street Swag' and 'Winnings' rhythms, Stephen McGregor voiced over the instrumentals instructing people not to use them without his consent.

In the case of 'Winnings', that was released earlier this month, he sang, "no man caan voice pon mi instrumental/ No man to mi rhythm again/ No man to mi version/ No man caan voice voice pon mi track after a nuh rehearsal/ No man to mi rhythm dem."

This move has not gone down well with some people.

"Genius a fight young artiste. Mi naa lie da idea yah mad fi have yuh signature all ova yuh riddim but wah happen to di youth dem weh nuh have money fi pay and voice a tune and jus' a try inna di streets," someone commented on YouTube.

But McGregor said this is far from the truth.

"In everything that I do I get backlash. Nuff people seh is me fighting young artiste but it is nothing like that," he told THE WEEKEND STAR.

He also noted that the practice is nothing new as it was done as far back as in the 1960s.

"Dem haffi know that it's something that's been going on from before my time," he said.

McGregor explained that he decided to voice on the instrumentals after finding out that people have been using his rhythms and even going as far as using his name.

"A lot of people always take the instrumentals and voice songs on it. People send out the songs saying it's produced by Stephen and it go out there with my name on it. People even put out CD with my logo, contact number and email address. It's bad for business," he told THE WEEKEND STAR, noting that he does not always release the instrumentals for the rhythms.

"Not all of them are bad, you have some people that do good. But I can lose my credibility because my name is on there and it looks official."

In the meantime, McGregor said both 'Street Swag' and 'Winnings' rhythms are doing well.

"The reception is great. Dem a run the streets, so mi just a continue keep it up," he said.

The producer said he was also working on Chino's album that is scheduled for release in March. In addition, he said he was working on a host of songs and rhythms, which he was reluctant to name.

Barcelona have announced the most lucrative shirt sponsorship deal in football history - worth £125million with the Qatar Foundation.

Telflon has recorded a hard-hitting single on Stephen McGregors Daybreak Riddim that attacks powerful forces in the music business who are conspiring against his career. A few lines from the single go:

Teflon, however, has played down any suggestion of conflict between he and Octane.

"Is not any beef thing, is just a clarification of certain things," Teflon said. "I was at Arrows and some things go down, and mi lef, me and Octane nuh really have no beef still."

He did not elaborate on the reasons he had left Arrows Recording Co. Ltd.

Mrs. Rose Linton, one of the bigwigs at Arrows Recording, offered a terse 'no comment' on the reported beef between her artiste, I-Octane and his former stable mate. Adding, "When we come back, the whole Gully Squad have a show on December 26 weh Mavado a set up. We ago close off the year wid a show inna Guyana, and bring in the new year wid some new song weh wi just voice fi Stephen, F**** and Jordan dem. 2011 a go see the Gully Squad a guh haad," he added.

The Gully Squad consists of Mavado, Kibaki, Chase Cross, Flexxx, Savage, 3 Star, Stacious and Crymist.

 

WOMEN and men about to have oral sex should not brush their teeth or floss before the act. This Lecelle Brown, outreach officer from the Ministry of Health said could lead to the acquisition of the HIV virus if the other party is infected.

"We recommend that persons about to do oral sex not brush or floss before they perform oral sex as this leaves bruises inside the mouth through which the virus can pass," Brown said.

Brown, who was one of the counsellors at the HIV/AIDS testing held at the Jamaica Observer's Beechwood Avenue offices last Wednesday, a day before the recognition of World AIDS Day, said the bruises to the gums caused by brushing leaves it vulnerable for the virus to enter the *la*hdstream. Flossing also often results in open wounds, which could also lead to the acquisition of the virus.

"Even if you are not feeling or tasting any *la*hd inside the mouth, that does not mean there is no opening -- there can still be an opening that you are unaware of," Brown explained.

She also reminded persons that the HIV virus can also be transferred through kissing, again if there are bruises inside the mouth. Other methods are through oral, anal and vaginal sex.

Precautionary measures that can be taken:

* Use a soft toothbrush when brushing.

* While no recommended time is specified, some dentists suggest brushing hours before performing oral sex or kissing.

* Eating fresh fruits before lovemaking will do wonders in freshening the breath and cleaning the mouth, thus eliminating the need to brush and floss.

* Use mouthwash prior to performing oral sex or kissing instead of brushing and flossing.

* Ensure that your partner is HIV negative before getting sexually involved.

* Ensure that you are HIV negative before any sexual contact.

* Stick to one faithful sex partner.

Terror Fabulous returned to the birthplace of his musical career in Portsmouth, a traditional community in the municipality of Portmore on Saturday night.

Fabulous first got a chance to express his lyrical abilities at the Cool Breeze nightclub, a hot spot in Portsmouth in the early 1990s, which helped propel him into the much acclaimed DJ he was in the 1990s.

Fabulous was a surprise act on Digicel's 'Loaded Christmas' concert and got good response from the crowd, as he performed lyrics from his 1990s hits, such as Kotch A Gal Yard and Number Two.

Fabulous is also known for songs like Action which was a collaboration with Nadine Sutherland, Gangster's Anthem, Have You Ever Seen A 45 Before, Jah Works, Glamorous, Call Di Hearse, Anything For You, and Position.

Much have not been heard from Fabulous for some time now. However, there seem to be signs of a resurgent in his musical career.

Terror Fabulous, now 35, resides in Bridgeview in Portmore, and said briefly after his performance that he was busy working in the studios and his work continues.

The game, which was released last month, enables users to do dance moves without the use of controls. In playing the game, the user dances to special choreographed moves in an effort to master all tracks.

Developed by Harmonix and published by MTV Games, Dance Central has total of 32 songs on its track listing.

Beenie Man is the only dancehall artiste to be featured on the game which has tracks from a mix of pop, hip hop and R&B artistes including Rihanna with Pon De Replay, Fanny Pack's Hey Mami, Nelly Furtado's Maneater, Beastie Boys' Body Movin (Fatboy Slim Remix), among others.

A video tutorial of the game shows a professional dancer dancing to variations of Jamaican dance moves such as the Log On, Wacky Dip, Gully Creepa, Willy Bounce and Move Them Up.

In recent times, dancehall music and dancehall artistes have been highlighted overseas in a few instances. Among these, Vybz Kartel's Clarks, Erups's Click Mi Finga and Sean Paul's So Fine were all featured in dance routines on So You Think You Can Dance Canada, a televised talent show for Canadian acts.

In 2004, Sean Paul had a character in the popular video game, Def Jam: Fight for NY, and he again appeared in the game's sequel, Def Jam: Icon in 2007.

NEW YORK Five Columbia University students were charged Tuesday with selling LSD-spiked candy and other drugs at three fraternity houses and other residences on the Ivy League campus, with two allegedly claiming they needed the drug money to cover tuition.

Police arrested Christopher Coles, Harrison David, Adam Klein, Jose Stephen Perez a at dawn on Tuesday at the prestigious school in upper Manhattan.

The students all 20-year-olds except Perez, whos 22 were hauled into a Manhattan courtroom later in the day, shackled together and wearing Columbia and fraternity sweat shirts. They pleaded not guilty to multiple drug dealing charges alleging they were supplied by violent traffickers.

The five were to remain in custody until they could make bail ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 in cash.

Authorities called it one of the largest drug takedowns on a New York City college campus in recent memory.

The allegations go against not only state and federal law, but also university policy and the principles we have set and strive together to maintain for our community, school officials said in a letter to students. Please rest assured we are taking this matter very seriously.

The arrest culminated a five-month probe dubbed Operation Ivy League that relied on a youthful undercover officer posing as a drug middleman for another college outside the city. Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan said the officer paid nearly $11,000 for 31 purchases of LSD, marijuana, cocaine, Ecstasy and prescription stimulants.

Authorities said most of the arrested students customers were other students and friends buying smaller amounts for recreational use. The liquid LSD was sold in Altoids and SweeTarts.

The investigation led authorities to three traffickers in the East Village and Brooklyn, including one charged with plotting to kidnap rival dealers for ransom. The suspect allegedly tried to recruit a second undercover officer to use a stun gun on his victims and drug them with LSD.

The students sold drugs to turn a quick profit, but subjected themselves to risks, of which they were either ignorant or in denial, Brennan said in a statement. These students were playing with fire.

Prosecutors say Coles told arresting officers, I just sell it to pay tuition. David described as the initial target of the investigation allegedly said the same, adding that his father wont pay tuition.

Said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly: This is no way to work your way through college.

In remarks in court, defense attorneys sketched brief profiles of their clients: David as a junior engineering student and son of a Massachusetts doctor; Coles a junior majoring in anthropology and political science and working as a counselor; Klein the son of a Tenafly, N.J., schoolteacher mother and recently laid-off father; Wymbs a senior engineering and life-sciences student applying to graduate school; and Perez a scholarship student and published poet.

Merv (a Despers man, but more on that later) had a shop on Nostrand Avenue and President Street that was unlike any bakery I have ever been to in that you couldnt always get bread there. What? No bread? In my assessment, Mervs was more like a hobby shop. All the ingredients for bread, currants rolls, coconut drops, sweet bread were contained within, but whence cometh the bread? Most bakeries open at an ungodly 4:30 a.m. to start the production going so that bread can start rolling off the line, no pun intended. Not Mervs. Some time around 4:00 pm a LIMITED supply of hot baked goods came out of the oven. The bread was delicious; the pone worth waiting for. Sometimes you could take home a loaf and it would have vanished before you made it to your door. One of the greatest indications that hope is alive was the line outside the bakery in the evening. In spite of being turned away when the bread was done yesterday, people still came back hoping to get a taste for the evening. The one time of the year you knew that you had to wait, though, was the carnival season. Merv religiously closed up shop, not even leaving a note to say when he would return, to go back to Trinidad. Rapper Young Jeezy was arrested and released by police hours before headlining a highly anticipated concert in western New Providence.

Police confirmed that the Atanta-based rapper, whose real name is Jay Wayne Jenkins, was arrested after an incident in Fox Hill, then taken to the Wulff Road police station for booking on Saturday.

He was here with us a short while, he passed through the station briefly on Saturday, officer-in-charge of the Wulff Road station Superintendent Ashton Greenslade told The Tribune.
He was booked in here and taken to CDU (Central Detective Unit).

Supt Greenslade said he could not provide additional details on Mr Jenkins arrest.

Head of the CDU Superintendent Leon Bethel and his subordinate Assistant Superintendent Michael Moxey did not give The Tribune further details of the arrest and events leading up to it before press time.

One of the concerts promoters Jason Cartwright confirmed on his Facebook page that the hip-hop star had been arrested early Saturday, but was later released.

In an hourlong ABC interview with Barbara Walters, Oprah Winfrey again denies any sort of romantic relationship with BFF Gayle King.

"Describe that friendship to me," Walters says.

After a long pause, an emotional Winfrey answers: "She is ... the mother I never had. She is ... the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don't know a better person. I don't know a better person."

Choking back tears and eventually beginning to cry, Oprah continues: "It's making me cry because I'm thinking about ... how much ... I probably have never told her that."

Walters says the sit-down with Winfrey is, "Probably the most personal interview I've seen her do. I've never seen her quite as revealing throughout the interview."

Despite the emotional and personal nature of the conversation, Oprah remains as pointed as ever in her speech. "I have said we are not gay enough times. I'm not lesbian ... I'm not even kinda lesbian," Winfrey says. "And the reason why it irritates me is because it means that somebody must think I'm lying. That's number one. Number two, why would you want to hide it? That is not the way I run my life."

Winfrey also talks candidly about her relationship with businessman and entrepreneur Stedman Graham. The two became a couple in 1986, were engaged in 1992, and, according to Barbara Walters, are still very much an item.

"Every time we showed up in public... there'd be another exploitive story," Oprah says. "So I made a conscious effort around 2003, 2004, to pull back on my public appearances with Stedman."

Describing live-in significant other Stedman, Winfrey deems him: "The love ... the lover ... the man ... the partner ... the mate ... I do not know of another man on this planet who could have lived this life with such dignity, with such grace and such respect and humility in it. And still hold his own and be his own."

Winfrey also speaks about never having children and fears about starting her own network, the impetus for her concluding 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' after this season, the 25th for the daily talk show.

 

A Wisconsin man underwent surgery Tuesday to have his tongue re-attached after his wife bit it off during a kiss, the Sheboygan Press reported.

The 79-year-old victim called police late Monday night and dispatchers sent an ambulance and officers to his home in Sheboygan, 60 miles north of Milwaukee, despite having trouble understanding what he was saying, the report said.

When officials arrived, the man and his 57-year-old wife were outside singing Christmas carols. The wife reportedly threw a coffee cup at the emergency responders.

Officers with the Sheboygan Police Department said the mans tongue was bitten off when the woman tried to kiss him inside the couples home. The man was missing about half his tongue.

The man asked that his wife not be arrested, but she was taken into custody and charged with domestic violence.

Wesley Snipes Told Larry King. Tax Trial That Got Him 3 Year Jail Sentence Was Unfair. 1 Juror Says 3 Others Stated They Thought Snipes Was Guilty Before The Trial Even Began

In probably his last interview before he reports to a federal prison for three years, Wesley Snipes sat down with Larry King.

Snipes was convicted of failure to file taxes in 1999, 2000 and 2001, a misdemeanor. He is scheduled to report to McKean Federal Correctional Institution on Thursday to begin his sentence.

The 48-year old actor told Larry that he felt he was being made an example of by the judge and prosecutors in the case. He explained that his financial advisors were given power of attorney, in order to handle his taxes for him.

Prosecutors said Snipes earned $40 million since 1999 but had filed no returns and had been involved in a tax resisters group

"This is another thing that has been misreported. It has been framed that I was a conspirator and that I was an architect in a scheme by an organization that has been characterized as tax protesters. The press hasn't reported that I was a client of people who I trusted [who] had knowledge and expertise in the areas of tax law that would protect my interests," Snipes said.

Frank Tuttle, who served as a juror in Snipes' trial, told CNN that several jurors had already made their minds up that the actor was guilty before the trial even began.

"There was one juror that said they knew Mr Snipes was guilty when they saw him during jury selection. I told the juror that was not right, and it went against what the judge had told us before the trial was to begin. Two others then agreed, and said that they thought he was guilty when they first saw him, before the trial began.

We were deadlocked on our decision about Mr Snipes before this happened. I was not expecting to hear that from a juror and most jurors felt the same. That's when a deal was made to find him guilty on the failure to file taxes [a misdemeanor]. And not the federal tax evasion charge. We did not think he would go to jail." Tuttle stated.

Snipes became a household name by starring in the films, New Jack City, White Men Can't Jump and Blade.

His only hope of avoiding jail tme is a last minute reprieve by theSupreme Court.

 

The controversial Fifa executive committee member Jack Warner today broke his silence on the contested 2018 World Cup vote when he said voting for England would have been "the ultimate insult" to Fifa in the wake of British media allegations of corruption.

England 2018 insiders claim Warner, pivotal to their chances of success and wooed by David Beckham and successive prime ministers, promised the three votes under his control to England before voting for Russia. But the Concacaf president said the revelations in the Sunday Times and Panorama were the reason England polled only two of the 22 votes available and were knocked out in the first round.

Three days before the vote, Panorama accused three Fifa executive committee members of bribery and alleged Warner tried to supply ticket touts at the 2010 World Cup. He had previously been admonished by Fifa's ethics committee over ticket deals for the 2006 tournament and has faced a host of other allegations of impropriety.

"Suffice it to say the Fifa exco as a body could not have voted for England having been insulted by their media in the worst possible way at the same time. To do so would have been the ultimate insult [to Fifa]," said Warner.

It is understood the Fifa president Sepp Blatter raised the issue of the "evil" media coverage of Fifa just hours before the vote and England's rivals, including the Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin and influential Spanish ex-co member Angel María Villar Llona, played heavily on it.

Some on England's bid team believe the revelatory media exposes, which they tried desperately to disassociate themselves from, were a factor but others believe that the issue became an convenient excuse for Fifa members to switch their votes for other reasons.

Japan's Junji Ogura said the investigations, which led to the suspension of six senior Fifa officials including two executive committee members in the case of the Sunday Times, had an impact.

"What I can say is that the reports definitely had an impact on the England bid. There's no mistake about that," said Ogura, heavily courted by England but believed to have backed Russia.

Ogura said his colleagues were angry at the Sunday Times sting on Nigeria's Amos Adamu and Tahiti's Reynald Temarii. "The African members of the executive committee were furious over the Sunday Times report," Ogura said.

"They even suggested suing the paper at the executive committee meeting. The people being accused were from Africa and Oceania, not Europe or Asia, and some felt racism was behind it."

The head of Australia's failed 2022 bid Frank Lowy said "playing straight" may have cost them the World Cup, adding that Fifa members lied to them about their voting intentions.

"I wanted to give credit to Australia and not to get caught in some kind of shonky business, and I can assure you now that we didn't do anything that was improper in this whole period," said Lowy.

"Did that cost us the bid? Maybe. I don't know, I'm not sure. But we are straight and we wanted to play it straight."

Jerome Valcke, the Fifa secretary general who oversaw the voting process, again defended the secret ballot system.

"If we say yes, yes it does not work, we would recognise something went wrong," said Valcke, speaking in Abu Dhabi ahead of tomorrow's opening match of the Club World Cup. "I'm sorry to say we have organised a voting system which was very transparent.

"If the question is it's not transparent because you don't know who voted for whom, you will never know for whom I voted for between Nicolas Sarkozy and Segolene Royal three years ago when the election took place. I will not tell because that is my freedom to decide for whom I voted without having to say publicly my choice."

Valcke, under pressure as the man who recommended that both World Cups be decided at once for commercial reasons, has already indicated that Fifa will not bow to pressure to overhaul the voting system or expand the electorate.

He said Fifa had until 2018 to decide if it "should or [should] not change" the way host countries are decided. But he said last week's vote was "perfectly organised, perfectly transparent and perfectly under control."

Three nationals of Caribbean states are among six people pardoned by outgoing Governor of New York, David Paterson.

They were all subject to deportation as a result of prior criminal convictions.

The three are Jamaican Marlon Oscar Powell, Darshini Ramsaran, who has dual citizenship in Guyana and Trinidad, and Mario Benitez of the Dominican Republic.

The pardons will make them eligible to seek discretionary relief from deportation.

The following are case profiles of the trio as issued by the Governors office:

Marlon Oscar Powell

Mr Powell lawfully immigrated to the United States from Jamaica in 1986, when he was 13 years old.

When he was 15 years old, he was convicted of using a fake ID to gain admission to a club where he was arrested for misdemeanour drug possession and sentenced to 9 months in jail under the mistaken belief that he was then 21 years old.

Had Mr Powell properly been considered a youthful offender, his misdemeanour crime would not be deportable.

In the 20 years since his release, he has become a productive member of society, maintaining steady employment and supporting and raising his 4 young children.

Mr Powell is now in immigration detention in New Jersey and was recently ordered removed from the country.

This pardon will give him a basis to re-open the removal proceedings and make him eligible to seek discretionary relief from removal.

Darshini Ramsaran

At the age of 8, Ms. Ramsaran, who has dual citizenship in Guyana and Trinidad, was brought to the United States on a visitors visa, and her parents never sought to adjust her status.

During her teenaged years she was the victim of repeated and awful physical abuse, which caused her deep psychological distress.

She nonetheless testified against one of her abusers, who was convicted and deported to Guyana.

When she was 21, she pled guilty to third-degree robbery for being the driver during a street robbery perpetrated by her then-boyfriend (who also had abused her) and two other men.

Ms. Ramsaran cooperated with prosecutors and testified against one of the accomplices, as a result of which she remained in custody for over two years, even though she was sentenced to only 364 days in jail for her conviction.

After her testimony, she immediately was detained by immigration officials, and has remained in such detention for well over a year.

Ms Ramsaran, who is represented by Sanctuary for Families, has filed a petition for a U-Visa, a type of visa that is available to non-citizens who cooperate in the investigation and prosecution of criminal activities against them.

This pardon will assist her in obtaining such a visa, which is of significant importance because of the dangers Ms Ramsaran would face if deported to her native Guyana or Trinidad, where the two men she testified against have threatened her and easily could subject her to further harm.

Mario Benitez

In 1978, when he was 26 years old, Mr Benitez immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic, and a few years later he served honourably in the United States Navy.

In 1988, Mr Benitez pled guilty to second-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance and was sentenced to 8 years to life in prison.

While in prison, Mr Benitez was a role model inmate, who earned a Bachelors Degree in Accounting and, upon release, began working at the City University of New Yorks (CUNY) Lehman College.

After passing the CPA (certified public accountant) exam in 1997, he has risen to jobs with higher levels of responsibility, and today he is the Assistant Director of Finance for CUNYs Graduate School and University Center in charge of a budget in excess of $60 million.

Mr Benitez, who was discharged from parole supervision after only 3 years, has been involved in numerous community activities in the Bronx, including one-on-one youth mentoring.

He is married and has 4 daughters, all of whom are United States citizens. This pardon will make him eligible to seek discretionary relief from deportation.
