Three of the five teenage girls caught on video viciously attacking a pregnant teen and her boyfriend on a Metro bus last month have significant juvenile criminal histories, mostly for assaults and thefts, according to court records.
One girl was convicted last year of attacking a woman and attempting to steal her purse, while another girl allegedly grabbed and shoved a nurse at Swedish Hospital in August. A third girl has several theft convictions, including one from early 2008 for stealing $918 worth of merchandise from the downtown Seattle Macy's store, according to court records.
On Nov. 19, the five teens four juveniles and one adult got on the Route 358 bus in Belltown during rush hour and made their way to the back of the packed, articulated coach, according to the King County Sheriff's Office, which is responsible for policing Metro buses, bus stops and transit stations.
Without warning, one of the suspects grabbed an MP-3 player away from 17-year-old Jessica Redmon-Beckstead, who was on the bus with her boyfriend, Jason DeCoste, 19. In the moments that followed, the suspects punched and kicked both Redmon-Beckstead and DeCoste on the bus, despite the posted signs alerting passengers that video-surveillance cameras are on board.
The Sheriff's Office provided video footage of the incident during a news briefing in Sheriff Sue Rahr's office on Thursday. "I was shocked by how vicious it was and how unprovoked it was," Rahr said of the attack.
During the incident, one of the suspects can be heard accusing DeCoste of stealing her cellphone. According to sheriff's spokesman Sgt. John Urquhart, DeCoste briefly met the girl at a party last summer and has denied taking her phone. His girlfriend, who was three months pregnant at the time of the attack, did not know any of the suspects, Urquhart said.
Redmon-Beckstead and DeCoste can be seen getting punched in the face and head several times; at one point, one of the suspects uses a bus railing to lift herself up and repeatedly kick DeCoste in the head. Three of the suspects rummage through his pockets, one of them pulling out a pack of cigarettes.
DeCoste tells the attackers that his girlfriend is pregnant, and one replies: "Nobody hit her in the stomach," while encouraging her friends to "hit her in the face."
"During the course of the video all the suspects are seen laughing during the course of the assaults and even joke about how they did not get any money from the victims. One of the suspects is heard complaining that she broke her nail," according to charging documents filed in the case.
Quickly arrested
On the video, DeCoste and other passengers are heard yelling for the bus driver to stop the bus, and DeCoste is again punched in the face and head as he and Redmon-Beckstead get off the bus. According to the Sheriff's Office, the couple then walked to the front of the bus and notified the driver, who called police and waited for deputies to arrive.
Redmon-Beckstead needed six stitches to close a gash over her left eye, while DeCoste suffered bruising. Both told deputies they were concerned for their unborn child, charging papers say.
All five suspects got off the bus when the driver stopped. Within half an hour, deputies arrested three of them in the 8500 block of Aurora Avenue, Urquhart said.
According to Urquhart, a fourth suspect, who is 16, was arrested Nov. 30 at her house in South Seattle.
The fifth suspect, 19-year-old Ayana Cain who complained about breaking a nail was arrested Dec. 7 at a Belltown beauty salon, he said. Cain, a student at South Lake High School, spent four days in the King County Jail before posting bond on her $50,000 bail, jail records show.
One 16-year-old is currently on electronic home monitoring while three others ages 17, 16, and 15 are being held at the King County Juvenile Detention Center. The Seattle Times does not typically name juvenile-crime suspects. King County prosecutors have filed paperwork in hopes of charging the 17-year-old as an adult.
The four juveniles have been charged with second-degree robbery, and Cain was charged with second-degree assault, according to charging documents.
The suspects, who were provided ORCA bus passes by Seattle Public Schools, have had their passes revoked and are banned from riding Metro buses for a year, according to the Sheriff's Office. If they are discovered on a bus during that time, they can be arrested for criminal trespassing.
Virtues of video
During the roughly four-minute assault, no one on the bus called 911, but Rahr said people were probably too shocked to react.
"When a situation erupts very quickly, it takes awhile for people to respond," she said.
Though Rahr characterized the attack as "an isolated incident," she said emphasis patrols are being assigned to Route 358 buses to ensure riders feel safe. But she pointed out that the route alone carries nearly 10,000 people each weekday and more than 3 million people a year.
Urquhart encouraged passengers who witness crimes to call 911 but not to get involved. He said the bus driver "did everything right" once he became aware of the disturbance at the back of his bus and passengers can be heard yelling for him to stop the coach.
"He did not move that bus. He kept that bus in place until police could get there and interview witnesses," which led to the quick arrest of three of the suspects, Urquhart said. "This is how it's supposed to work," he said.
The bus is one of nearly 400 Metro coaches currently equipped with state-of-the-art video equipment, which records both video and audio. Cameras will be added to another 250 buses over the next few years, Rahr said.
In releasing the video of the Nov. 19 incident, Rahr said video cameras aboard buses are a deterrent to crime. She said there is a more than 90 percent arrest rate for crimes that are captured on video.
In a Sept. 17 incident, a surveillance video helped police identify and arrest a man who allegedly punched a mentally disabled man just after stepping off the No. 7 Metro bus on Rainier Avenue South, near Mount Baker Station.
The unprovoked attack left the victim, 55, with a broken jaw and face cuts. Police arrested Raymel J. Curry, 32, who has been arrested or cited more than 50 times, on suspicion of second-degree assault.
Previous attacks
The 16-year-old who was arrested Nov. 30 and is still in custody was convicted of attempted first-degree robbery last year for attacking a woman outside her apartment building and trying to steal her purse.
The 16-year-old and two other girls followed Lauren Luttrell, 29, off a bus in the Ravenna neighborhood and demanded money, according to Luttrell and court records. When Luttrell refused, the 16-year-old grabbed Luttrell by the hair and pushed her to the ground. A second girl "banged my head against the door frame a few times" and the 16-year-old delivered several kicks to her body.
The girls laughed during the assault, "which I think is messed up," Luttrell said Thursday. "They all just seemed very mean-spirited."
Luttrell wasn't surprised to hear the 16-year-old was suspected in another attack: "She was the main girl of the three who attacked me.
"Definitely I think they were enjoying it. They hadn't tried to take my purse until they'd verbally and physically messed with me," said Luttrell.
The 16-year-old was sentenced to 15 to 36 weeks in juvenile detention, but the court records did not indicate how much time she served.
In February, the 16-year-old was again arrested for possessing a stolen vehicle and was supposed to report for drug treatment 10 days before the Nov. 19 bus assault, court records show.
The same 16-year-old and another suspect in the bus attack, who is 15, got into a fight while visiting the other 16-year-old suspect in the hospital in August, according to court records. The girls were fighting over a laptop and the 15-year-old allegedly grabbed and shoved a nurse, the records say. The 15-year-old was charged with assault.
The 17-year-old suspect has been arrested numerous times for theft for stealing from a beauty-supply store, a grocery and two department stores, including the downtown Macy's.
In his first full-length interview with a UK journalist in over 5 years, Vybz Kartel speaks to The Wrap UpsMarvin Sparks about his beginnings, writing for Bounty Killer, the infectious tribute to footwear brand Clarks, working with Major Lazer on Pon Di Floor and much more, in the first of this two-part interview...
Vybz Kartel were a group comprised of three artists, including Adijah Palmer, then known as Addi Banton. The group split due to differences in vision, but Addi Banton kept the name Vybz Kartel, joined Bounty Killer's crew, Alliance, and the rest, as they say, is history. Initially coming to prominence flexing his lyrical skills in 2002, Kartel became one of the genre's leading artists shortly thereafter, which included featuring on the Def Jam's US and Jamaica collaboration album, Def Jamaica, working with Missy Elliott and fans including Nicki Minaj and Jay-Z. Controversy has never been far; from clashing Ninja Man, which lead to a fight on stage, leaving the Alliance then performing at his former mentor's biggest rival Beenie Man'swedding to Bounty Killer's ex-girlfriend, 2 years on-and-off fued with Mavado, to being sued for creating the explicit 2009 hit Ramping Shop from Ne-Yo'sMiss Independent.
The Wrap Up: You broke through with a unique style of deejaying (rapping) to dancehall in 2001/2002. Tell us a bit about why you adopted that style...
Controversial deejay Beenie Man raised eyebrows when he aired his grievances against fellow deejay Vybz Kartel on Nationwide 90 FM's 'Ragashanti Live!' yesterday.
On the programme, the deejay discussed in length his correction of Kartel's Dancehall Hero with his song Father God HelpThem, both on the 'Dancehall EFX' rhythm.
According to Beenie, while Kartel did not call his name in his song, he feels that lyrics in the song is directed at him. The deejay also commented on the ways in which he feels disrespected by various actions of Kartel.
According to Beenie, while he has supported Kartel since 2002 as his deejay, Kartel has not been supportive of him. He told the host of the programme, Ragashanti, 'The King of Mix-up', that; "I have never heard Kartel endorse nutten bout Beenie Man, any Kartel fans can tell yuh dis."
He added, "all di support mi support Vybz Kartel, he has never supported me. Di stage show mi have up a stadium mi pay Kartel $900,000. Dat him charge me and him nah come fi less than dat. And di night we short him $20,000 and him wouldn't leave the venue till him get the $20,000. Seriously no joke ting and a me sey Gaza Mi Sey, and dat is di biggest song all ova di world and me support Kartel all ova di world."
Beenie outlined other ways in which he feels disrespected by Kartel explaining an incident that took place between Kartel and disc-jock ZJ Liquid in which a BlackBerry broadcast message was sent out throwing words at the disc-jock and Beenie over their use of the words 'oh' and 'awoh' - phrases that were made popular by Kartel.
He added that he had contacted Kartel to voice with him on the song Gaza Mi Sey and was told by Kartel to voice with young deejay Popcaan instead. The deejay also said that Kartel's reference to himself in a radio advertisement as the 'new King of the Dancehall', a title he claims is reserved for him, is an obvious attempt to disrespect him.
Beenie said, "I just feel sey him (Kartel) nuh have no honour to nobody. Him honour himself and dats it. Him nuh respect nobody as far as I see it."
He also admitted to being very offended by the content of Dancehall Hero, "me respect him as a deejay, I don't know him as a person. I know him as a artiste. Dis song I found to be disrespectful to the whole entire dancehall world."
Another issue which Beenie has with Kartel is his recent comment in THE STAR that Sting would be a flop this year attracting no more than 50 people without the presence of the Gully and the Gaza heads performing on the show.
"Dats disrespect to di whole entire dancehall industry. You are not God, you are not the man that make music. Music was here before you and when you gone a go still deh yah. The worse Sting was last year and Kartel close it and Mavado did de pon it too. Good, blessing. I wasn't on it," Beenie said.
When contacted Kartel was aware of the interview. He said: "As I said in the song, "call up me name jus fi get a forward and dem think 'bout Addi more than them woman", should sum up my sentiments. And in closing I would like to quote another line from Dancehall Hero - "Me nuh member nuh DJ bwoy"."
Beenie emphasised, however, that his song, Father God Help Them, is not a counteraction nor is there a feud between himself and Kartel and encouraged fans not to take it personally. He said, "there's no feud or no drama, it cyaan happen. I do not deal wid badness and I do not push badness to people."
Nicolas Cage can be seen in the video below unleashing a torrent of curse words at bystanders outside a Romanian nightclub (the expletives are plenty).
In the video, the actor screams Get in that car and walk away, to someone -- along with lots of other things.
Cage is on location filming the follow-up film to Ghost Rider, and this is the second video of him screaming at people in public thats come out this week. His reps have not yet commented on this story.

Its not everyday people walk into a police station and confess to a murder they committed nearly two decades ago, but thats just what happened Wednesday night.
Travell Coleman aka G-Dep confessed to murdering a man on October 19, 1993 in Harlem, New York.
It was just eating away at him, a police source told The New York Post.
Police say they are sure Dep commited the crime because he knew details only the killer would know.
According to Dep he was riding his bike when he rolled up on 32-year old John Henkel, who he attempted to rob. Henkel resisted and was shot three times.
Dep was once signed to Diddys Bad Boy Records and had a hit records with Special Delivery and "Let's Get It" in 2001.
Recently though, the rapper has fallen on hard times, battling a reported heroin addiction.
Hes been arrested at least 25 times since 2003 for a variety of crimes including grand larceny and robbery.
Barcelona are planning an audacious £85million swoop next summer for Cesc Fabregas and Fernando Torres.
The Catalan club are now boosted by the massive cash injection from the huge sponsorship deal with Qatar Foundation which will be worth £125million over five years.
And this will enable the club to make sizeable offers for both Fabregas and Torres.
The Arsenal captain Fabregas is a native Catalan and was close to moving back to his spiritual home in the summer when Barcelona made their interest known.
He was persuaded to stay after long talks with manager Arsene Wenger but he is unlikely to resist should Barcelona return in July.
Torres has had a strange season with Liverpool.
At times he has looked back to his best as when he scored twice when Chelsea were beaten at Anfield this season.
But on other occasions, he has looked disinterested and appears disillusioned at Liverpools lack of progress while new manager Roy Hodgson carries out his re-building programme.
Torres is also wanted by Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid but Torres would not go to the Bernabeu.
He grew up as an Atletico Madrid fan and played for the club. He would find it impossible to return to Spain and play for Atleticos rivals.
Barca boss Pep Guardiola has assembled a squad of fearsome quality and are already hot favourites to lift the Champions League at Wembley next May.
But he has plans to maintain the domination in Spain and in Europe and already has a hit list of players to bolster the squad for next season with Fabregas and Torres top of the list.
And with the finance from Qatar, money will be no object.

The most famous name in English football is the target for the next wave of Arab invaders.
Across Manchester arch-rivals City are already owned by the Abu Dhabi United Group, led by billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Now Qatar Holdings, an investment vehicle for the Qatari royal family, are pursuing the £1.5billion takeover of Manchester United. The Gulf state of Qatar has already landed the right to stage the 2022 World Cup finals in an audacious international coup.
The Qataris have also accumulated a huge range of trophy assets in England.
These include the Harrods store and spectacular London properties such as One Hyde Park, the Shard of Glass and the US Embassy in Grosvenor Square.
Last week the Qatar Foundation, the charity wing of the ruling family, bought the sponsorship rights to the Barcelona shirt. It was a declaration of their intention of getting Qatar accepted as a global football brand.
Qatar Holdings is the third largest shareholder in car-maker VW and has a stake in Porsche.
Its chairman, Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani (right), who is also Qatars prime minister, is keen to add to their portfolio of investments and sees United as an iconic acquisition. The arrival of the Qatar billions would pave the way for the end of the controversial Glazer family reign.
The Arabs can satisfy any request for proof of funding from the Glazer family in the United States and are also willing to fund a massive transfer fund for manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Uniteds massive fan base around the globe are certain to welcome the change of ownership from the controversial Glazer regime.
The American family seized control for £790million in 2005.
But the Americans have incensed United supporters by borrowing against the clubs assets.
They loaded £716m in debt against the club provoking outrage among United fans who believe too much of the clubs income was being directed to pay prohibitive interest payments. A few weeks ago the Glazers did reduce Uniteds debt by paying back around £200m in PIK loans.
These were payment in kind loans from three hedge funds that were charging 16.25 per cent in annual interest.
Many City observers believed that reduction in debt could spark a Glazer sell-off. There were even rumours that the funding for the change had come from overseas investors keen to take a stake in United but the Glazers denied this.
A group of United fans calling themselves the Red Knights did try to launch a takeover coup a few months ago but backed off when they discovered the Glazers would not entertain a bid of around £1bn. However, the Qatar Holdings have set aside around £2.5bn in funds to purchase the club and provide Sir Alex Ferguson with unlimited spending power in the transfer market.
So far the Glazers have resisted attempts to drive them out of Old Trafford even though the fans have been so critical of their reign.
Now the scene could be set for the Glazers to leave with a massive profit. Qatar Holdings have been linked with a host of European giants including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Uniteds Premier League rivals, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle.
However, United have always been top of their wish list.
The purchase of United would leave the club debt free and the most powerful club in the current transfer market.
And even neighbours City, with all their wealth, may find it hard to compete with the potential red revolution.

A former member of Guyanas parliament was sentenced to life in prison yesterday for plotting to blow up fuel tanks at John F. Kennedy International Airport. But Kadir kept insisting that he was wrongly convicted.
At no time did I have any intention or believe in bringing any harm to the people of this country by the terrorist acts I happened to be identified with, Abdul Kadir told a judge in federal court in Brooklyn.
U.S. District Court Judge Dora Irizarry responded that there was ample evidence that Kadir was a key player in a plan that would have caused devastation unimaginable.
Kadir and Russell Defreitas, a former JFK cargo handler, were arrested and charged with multiple counts of conspiracy in 2007 after an informant infiltrated the plot and recorded them discussing it.
At a trial where Kadir and Defreitas were convicted earlier this year, prosecutors alleged the pair wanted to kill thousands of people and cripple the American economy by using explosives to blow up the fuel tanks and the underground pipelines that run through an adjacent Queens neighbourhood. They said they sought the help of militant Muslims, including an al-Qaida operative, in Guyana.
The government relied heavily on the informants secret recordings, which captured Defreitas bragging about his knowledge of Kennedy Airport and its vulnerabilities.
For years, Ive been watching them, he said of the fuel tanks while on a reconnaissance mission with the informant.
In other tapes, Defreitas ranted about punishing the United States with an attack that would dwarf 9/11.
Kadir testified in his own defense, denying he was a militant Muslim who spied for Iran for years before joining the JFK scheme. He told jurors that he warned the plotters: Islam does not support aggression or killing innocent people.
As part of the plot, Defreitas and the informant traveled to Guyana to try to meet with Kadir and show him homemade videotapes of the airports so-called fuel farms. The plotters also discussed reaching out to Adnan Shukrijumah, an al-Qaida member and explosives expert who was believed to be hiding out in the Caribbean at the time.
Shukrijumah, an FBI most-wanted terrorist, has been indicted on federal charges he was involved in a failed plot to attack the New York City subway system with suicide bombers.
Sentencing for DeFreitas is set for January 21.
Prince Charles and Camilla Caught in London Student Riot (We are now learning that there was physical contact between Camilla and one of the protesters who ambushed the car)
Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, react as their car is attacked in London on Thursday amid protests over university tuition hikes. "
There was physical contact between Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and one of the protesters who ambushed the car she and Prince Charles were in during Thursday's demonstrations against rising university tuition fees, the British government says.
Home Secretary Theresa May told Sky News on Sunday that "there was contact made," although she would not confirm reports Camilla had been poked with a stick through an open car window.
The prince's office also declined to comment, but stressed that the royal couple did not seek medical help after the altercation.
Officials are assessing royal security after the attack on Charles and Camilla, whose Rolls-Royce strayed into the path of protesters.
Demonstrators hit the car with sticks, fists and bottles and chanted "Off with their heads" before the vehicle pushed its way through the crowd and drove off.
Police have launched a "major criminal investigation" into the demonstrations, which saw protesters scuffle with riot police, smash windows and daub government buildings with graffiti.
Thirty-six people were arrested in connection with the protests in central London on Thursday. On Sunday, police posted images of 14 others who are wanted for questioning
Sting 2010 is shaping up to deliver another exciting chapter of this reggae dancehall show that has stood the test of time and can easily brag about its 27 non-stop years of existence.
Come Boxing Day, Sunday December 26, the Sting stage will be set up to accommodate adversaries-turnedfriends, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer, two of the headline acts on this years event. They will be performing tune-for-tune together on stage in what promises to be an exciting segment called The 13 Warriors of Sting.
According to Supreme Promotions, the organizers of the event, which has the tag line the greatest one-night reggae dancehall show on earth, the unity being shown in the music business among some artistes is praiseworthy.
We are happy for the wind of change sweeping through the dancehall right now. Some people feel that the friendship among former dancehall rivals make the music boring, but we love it, Isaiah Laing of Supreme Promotions has declared.
Both Beenie Man and Bounty Killer have extensive catalogues dating back to the early nineties and their rivalry throughout the decades has provided some of the highest highs and lowest lows in dancehall history. But come Sunday, December 26, Jamworld Entertainment Centre in Portmore, St Catherine, will witness a one-of-a-kind offering, the likes of which has never unfolded on that historic Sting stage.
Bounty Killer and Beenie Man together on a Sting stage and is not a clash vibes? Who did ever know seh that could happen? Beenie Man asked.
Yeah man, we have di programme set and we a go entertain the whole a Jamworld cause we know seh Jamworld a go full up a people. After we dun perform on stge Laing haffi pay we some more money, the deejay who calls himself the King of the dancehall stated.
A postal worker in the small town of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, eight miles north of Milwaukee, was arrested at the North Shore Post Office last Thursday for wearing an unsanctioned uniform while making his rounds. That is, no uniform at all.
The 52-year-old man allegedly walked into an office building to deliver mail wearing only a smile. According to Whitefish Bay Now, which cites a town police report, the man has since admitted to the nude delivery, saying "he was sorry and it was a stupid thing to do."
The Associated Press reports that the postman was hoping to cheer up a woman working at the office, who he said seemed stressed. The AP also says the woman "dared him to do it," but Whitefish Bay Now says the woman has denied encouraging the delivery of any sort of special package. Still, she says she doesn't believe he intended any harm.
The postman was arrested for "lewd and lascivious behavior," a Class A misdemeanor in Wisconsin.
Dancehall artiste Desmond Ballentine, better known by his stage name Ninjaman, and his son Jahniel are to spend their second consecutive Christmas behind bars, after more than a year in police custody on gun and murder charges.
Lawyers representing the father and son, who are charged with the March 16, 2009 murder of Ricardo 'Ricky Trooper' Johnson, failed to obtain bail for the men when they appeared in the Home Circuit Court on Friday.
The two were denied bail on the grounds that the witnesses in the case were being threatened.
According to the police, Ninjaman and his son were allegedly among a group of men who drove up in a grey motor vehicle and opened gunfire on Johnson as he swept his yard at Marl Road in Kingston.
Ninjaman surrendered to the police, a week after the incident, while the other accused men were later held in St Ann in April.
Clayton Dennis and Seymour Samuels were also charged in relation to the matter.
The Ballentines however, will return to court on January 14, when another attempt will made to secure their bail.
Ninjaman is being represented by Bert Samuels, while Charles Ganga-Singh represents the younger Ballentine.
Former Acting Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court Sir Brian Alleyne said Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit should resign if he knowingly committed a criminal act by contesting the 2009 general election while holding dual citizenship.
If the prime minister is aware that he has done what he is accused of doing then he ought to stand down, Sir Brian told journalists here.
He may choose to wait for the court to decide on the evidence, but if he knows that he has done what he is accused of having done then he ought to stand down. That would be the honest thing to do.
On Wednesday Opposition Leader Hector John also called on Skerrit to resign after a radio talk show host said that he had information that the prime minister renounced his French citizenship earlier this year.
But Skerrit described the call for his resignation as absurd and ridiculous and said that the opposition members, if they are in possession of any incriminating evidence, should take the matter to the courts.
Sir Brian argues that the situation paints an unfortunate image of the prime minister who should now act honorably and vacate his seat.
That, I think, is a terrible act. That you as the leader of a party aspiring to be Prime Minister deliberately mislead the public and the electoral office into giving you the status to contest the election, he said.
If you do that knowingly, knowing that you are committing a criminal act, it is terrible for the leader of the country to be in that situation. The consequences are both political and legal.
It also sends a signal to the public that you have no regard for the law and the constitution and the integrity of the country and maybe the positive side of that is that it sends a message for the future that people who aspire to those positions have to be honest in their approach, Sir Brian added.
UWP leaders have also questioned the High Courts delay in giving further direction in a matter challenging the Prime Ministers election in the Vieille Case constituency on December 18 last year, on the grounds that he holds dual citizenship.
Judge Errol Thomas had, in August, ruled that the case was substantial enough to be taken to trial. The matter is expected to come up for hearing on December 20.
THE police yesterday dug up two decomposed bodies from shallow graves on a large empty lot in Westchester, Portmore, St Catherine which detectives believe was being used by gangsters to bury their victims.
The Constabulary Communication Network last night identified one of the bodies as that of 32-year-old labourer Esmond Morris of Cumberland, also in Portmore. Morris, who went missing on December 6, had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. The second body is yet to be identified.
The bodies bring the total to be found on the property to three in the past two days, according to the police.
The police said yesterday that there could be more gruesome finds in the days to come, as detectives comb the partly vegetated property along Germaine Road, not far from the Bridgeport Primary School.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green, who heads the Criminal Investigation Branch, told the Observer that the police would be making further searches of the property that was once assessed for the construction of a private hospital.
"We believe that more bodies are buried there," said Green.
Shortly after the gruesome find, Mayor of Portmore Keith Hinds made an urgent call for the Police High Command to make every effort possible to rid communities within the municipality of criminal gangs.
"This is one of the first times I am literally lost for words," Hinds told the Observer. "To think that at this part of Jamaica that has enjoyed relative calm, to think that something such as this has happened is mind-blowing."
Most of yesterday morning was spent by the police clearing the overgrown vegetation with the aid of a tractor.
And as the police combed the cordoned-off area under the heat of the morning sun, residents expressed shock at the discovery. "Me can't believe what a happen in the area," said one woman.
Sudan's judiciary opened an investigation into a video of a woman being flogged that has been widely circulated on the Internet, the state news agency reported Sunday.
The video shows a woman in a voluminous cloak on her knees screaming and pleading with blue-uniformed policemen, identified as Sudanese, who take turns whipping her across the head and feet.
There is no way to verify the identity of the woman or the location of the event shown on the two minute video.
"The investigation was started immediately after the images of the young woman, being punished under Articles 154 and 155 of the 1991 Sudanese penal code, appeared on the Internet," the judiciary said in a statement.
The statement said the investigation would look into whether the punishment was implemented improperly.
Article 154 and 155 of the Sudanese penal code mandates flogging up to 100 lashes as a punishment for adultery or running a brothel, as well as up to five years in prison.
In 2009, Sudanese journalist Lubna Hussein was sentenced to 40 lashes under the country's controversial indecency law for appearing in public wearing trousers.
Under a storm of international criticism for the sentence, Hussein was eventually released with just a fine.
Sudan's government implements a conservative version of Islamic law in the north, and "public order" police enforce the laws, banning alcohol, breaking up parties and scolding men and women who mingle in public.
Cruise ships are suddenly offering more than a relaxing tour of oceanfront properties, as Brilliance of the Seas became the third cruise ship this year to scare the living hell out of the people on board. First the Carnival Splendor loses power and is stuck in the middle of the Pacific, then the Clelia II gets smacked by a 30-foot wave (seriously scary video). And now Brilliance of the Seas looks like a nasty team of burglars ransacked the 2,100-passenger boat. A couple on their honeymoon talked about how they were thrown in the air, tossed across their rooms, and thought they were going to die as the boat tipped to one side so far they thought they were going over. A news report shows photos of the wicked storm that slammed the Mediterranean last week and tossed the Royal Caribbean pleasure cruise look like a toy boat in a tub full of toddlers. Check out what happened to the 20-foot-tall Christmas tree on board:
Honestly, I wasn't a cruise ship kind of guy before, but now I'm absolutely standing firm on my refusal to board a floating resort. No, thank you. If the power goes out in a hotel, at least you can walk outside or head to another hotel. If a storm hits a resort town you can evacuate. Being trapped on a boat seems like pretty much the last place I'd ever, ever, ever want to be. I'm sure the Brilliance of the Seas passengers who are battered and bruised are feeling the same way. Would you go on a cruise ship after this year's disasters?
When a massive snowstorm dumped tons of the heavy white stuff on Minneapolis over the weekend, Fox, who was in town to broadcast Sundays scheduled NFL game between the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants, did something unusual: it trained a camera on the roof of the Metrodome stadium.
With the roof already leaking Saturday night, Foxs lead NFL game producer, Richie Zyontz, told USA Today his team knew what they were looking for. This was specifically for the roof collapsing, he said.
According to Zyontz, the video crew had heard from stadium maintenance workers that the roof was becoming a real problem and that collapses had occurred in the past. Smartly, the Fox broadcast team decided to set up a camera to visually monitor the roof overnight from inside the stadium. Mr. Zyontz: The Internet thanks you.
What Fox captured was footage of the roof collapsing early on Sunday morning and dumping showers of snow on the field. Since no one was hurt, we can all can enjoy the video for what it is: awesome. The video embedded below has already racked up more than 1.8 million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours, and the game has since been moved to Monday night at Ford Field in Detroit.
A 67-year-old Burger King customer died after being punched by a 20- year-old employee of the restaurant chain.
The customer who fell and hit his head later died. The death has been ruled a homicide police said.
An autopsy determined that Paul Cannon died from blunt force trauma to the head according to Dennis Niemiec, a spokesman for the Wayne County medical examiner's office in Detroit.
An earlier report suggested the punch may have caused Cannon to choke on his dentures, However that was proved incorrect.
The employee who is in custody could face criminal charges. Police said Cannon was reportedly causing a disturbance Thursday afternoon at the restaurant on the city's east side and tried to hit the worker, who swung back.
Police believe he was homeless.
West Indies opener Chris Gayle made the joint 12th highest Test score with a magnificent 333 on day two of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
The Windies had begun the day on 362-2, with former skipper Gayle on 219.
He passed his previous best of 317, but fell to Ajantha Mendis after matching the 333 set by Graham Gooch in 1990.
The tourists declared on 580-9 and Sri Lanka lost Tillakaratne Dilshan for a second ball duck before reaching stumps 526 runs adrift at 54-1.
Gayle first made a triple century with 317 against South Africa at Antigua in 2005, and is only the fourth man to achieve the feat twice in Test history, after Sir Donald Bradman, Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag.
The all-time individual Test batting record is held by former West Indies great Lara for the second time.
Lara hit 375 against England at the Antigua Recreation Ground in 1994, overtaking the previous record of 365 not out, held by Windies legend Garry Sobers since 1958.
Australias Matthew Hayden flayed a weak Zimbabwe side for 380 in 2003, but six months later Lara reclaimed his record with an unbeaten 400 against England on the same ground as his 375.
Gayles innings was the first triple-century by a West Indies player away from home, the highest by any player in Tests between the two teams, and the first triple hundred at Galle International Stadium.
It also helped to surpass the previous highest West Indies Test total against Sri Lanka, 477-7 declared in St Lucia in 2003.
The attacking left-hander hit eight sixes on Monday but only one on the final day, and indeed might have departed with the first ball of the morning.
He pushed forward to a flat delivery from spinner Mendis and was struck on the pad.
It was given not out and Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara used their final review, but third umpire Asad Raud concluded there was enough doubt and the original decision was correct.
There was another dramatic moment when Gayle was on 287.
He was surprised by a sharply rising ball from seamer Dammika Prasad and fended it to short extra-cover where Sangakkara took an easy catch.
However, non-striker Brendan Nash persuaded Gayle to refer the decision to third umpire Rauf, and the centurion was reprieved when replays showed the bowler had overstepped for a no-ball.
Gayle drove powerfully through long-off for a boundary to reach his triple century and knelt on the pitch holding his bat and helmet high in celebration.
A partnership of 167 was ended when spinner Mendis trapped Nash for 64, the first of six wickets to fall for 21 runs within nine overs.
That included Gayle, who was the sixth wicket to fall in the innings, beaten by a quicker one between bat and pad, with new captain Darren Sammy then dismissed first ball by a flighted delivery from Mendis that turned in to hit off-stump.
The Windies then made an immediate breakthrough with the key wicket of Dilshan, as 22-year-old Jamaican paceman Andre Russell struck with his second ball in Test cricket.
Sri Lankas free-scoring opener was early on his shot and it looped to mid-on where Shane Shillingford took an excellent catch diving forward, leaving Sangakkara and his team with much work to do.
But while we wait for the results, here are some of my predictions + comments

Arsenal have confirmed that 18-year-old Japanese forward Ryo Miyaichi will be joining the club in January.
The player, who has represented Japan at Under-17 level, impressed Gunners manager Arsene Wenger during a trial spell with the club earlier this year.
"He trialled with us in the summer and has raw ability which has attracted many clubs around the world," Wenger told the club's official website.
"I look forward to helping him fulfil his potential here at Arsenal."
Miyaichi is set to take part in the forthcoming All Japan High School Soccer Tournament, where he is representing Chukyodai Chuyko High School.
Once the national championships are concluded, Ryo will join up with his new team-mates in London.

RAIN PAIN ... Drogba reacts to a missed opportunity
Days after being knocked out of the Champions League to Inter Milan, Ancelotti's Blues saw their Premier League hopes dented by Sam Allardyce's plucky Blackburn.
El-Hadji Diouf headed Rovers level in the second half after the visitors had failed to build on the early lead given them by Didier Drogba's 28th goal of the season.
And it means Chelsea are outside the top two for the first time since August and lie four points behind United - although they still have a game in hand.
Ancelotti admits his team have made it much more difficult for themselves and knows only a win will be enough when they travel to Portsmouth on Wednesday night.
The Italian was asked whether he felt United now had the advantage.
And he said: "They are top of the league now, so yes. We know we have to do better than this.
"We now have less probability of winning the title. We have made it more difficult for ourselves now - although it is not impossible. I still think we can do it.
"We still have the ability to win this title but we have to be at our best. What we have to do now is stay as close to Manchester United as possible so that's why our game at Portsmouth on Wednesday is so important."
Ancelotti admitted this was his worst week since taking charge at Stamford Bridge - but admitted his players are struggling to recover from their humbling by Manchester City last month.
They were particularly disappointing in the second half after looking likely to breeze past Rovers in a dominant first-half show.
The Stamford Bridge boss said: "Yes, it's been a hard week but we have to start preparing for the next games which we need to win.
"The difficult moment started against Manchester City. It's a difficult moment in our season.
"We don't have to lose our confidence but we are behind now. The pressure was that we needed to win this game and we didn't do it. It's more difficult now.
"We have to win games now - that's the only solution to go forward.
"We need to work together and stay compact. We need to prepare well for the next game.
"I don't know how many points we will need to win the title.
"All I know is that we have to win on Wednesday. We have to prepare well for every game and look forward."
One consolation for Ancelotti is that both title rivals United and Arsenal still have to come to Ewood Park to face a Blackburn side who are tough to beat on their own patch. He said: "This is a very difficult place to come. At home they are a very strong team.
"Every team will find it difficult to come here.
"The second half was more difficult for us. We lost a bit of composure and conceded a goal.
"After that we came back but it was too late.
"I'm disappointed because we lost two important points.
"I don't know if there was a hangover from Wednesday against Inter but we prepared very well.
"We tried to win this game to cancel out the game against Inter.
"For an hour we did well but it's not an easy moment for us."
Ancelotti hopes to have both Petr Cech and Michael Ballack available for the trip to Fratton Park - but he faces an anxious wait on Branislav Ivanovic.
The Serbian defender suffered a knee injury following a challenge from Diouf and is likely to need a scan on the problem to determine the extent today.
Ancelotti said: "Ivanovic has a knee injury and we will see on Monday.
"Then we'll have a clearer idea of his injury. You have to be worried but you have to recover quickly.
"Hopefully Petr will be ready for Wednesday. Ballack had a problem with his tendon so should be ready as well.
"We have the quality to push up and look forward to the next game with confidence."
Rovers boss Allardyce tipped Chelsea to do the Double on the eve of the game and does not necessarily think this is the end of their chances.
And he handed Ancelotti a boost by promising to give United and Arsenal just as tough a test when they visit Ewood before the end of the campaign.
He said: "We've only lost twice here all season and we're very proud of that.
"We want to keep that going over the rest of the season.
"Hopefully we can have a big effect on the title by taking points off some more of the big boys between now and the end of the season."
One more bright point for Ancelotti was the fact this was the first time Chelsea have worn their navy away kit in a competitive fixture - and not lost.
SunSport revealed in December how the hooped shirts were cursed after four defeats out of four - to Aston Villa, Wigan, Blackburn in the Carling Cup and Manchester City.

A multi-million dollar housing development was announced yesterday (December 12) for the Grange Penn community in Montego Bay, St. James.
The development will be undertaken by the Housing Agency of Jamaica and will see the construction of over 900 studio, one , two and three bedroom units.
The development will take place on over 200 acres of land located in Lilliput, Rose Hall St. James.
In making the announcement, Member of Parliament for East Central St. James, Ed Bartlett says the land on which the development will take place was purchasedrecently by government.
It was bought from the Financial Sector Adjustment Company (FINSAC) at a cost of $150 m.
He says the section of the property, which is occupied, will be regularized with over 900 housing units to be constructed on the Greenfield section.

Store Owner Selling "Darkie" & Other Racist & Homophobic Soaps Refuses To Stop. "Racism? Our Country Was Built On Racism"
Noblesville, Ind. Gary Dewester is under fire for selling soaps with offensive labels like: "Kolored Kids" and "Darkie" with a black man pictured in a top hat. Other soaps contained labels with other racially charged slurs.
The building owner of Logan Village Mall told Fox59 News Dewester's lease may be pulled if he doesn't pull his soaps. Dewester claims the soaps sell well. He said he buys them from Florida.
Dewester has refused to pull the soaps saying they are a gag gift and that people have become too concerned about being "politically correct." Fox59 News visited the store and had a lengthy discussion with Dewester. Following are excerpts of the discussion with him that lasted about 10 minutes.
You know this is offensive to a lot of people
Gary Dewseter : It's not offensive to me.
You're making money off of racism.
Gary: Racism? Our country was built on racism. If it didn't sell we wouldn't sell it. People buy it.
But should you be the middleman to make a profit off racism?
Gary: Racism?
People are going to be appalled at this.
Gary: They are? Then people are just too politically correct. How about gay people in our country. Would they be offended by "Gay Johnny" and "The Fairy soap." (Gary then showed the soaps labeled "Gay johnny" and "The Fairy soap"). This is free publicity and I hope it makes every channel, because people will come in here.
People will think you're a racist because you're selling this soap.
Gary: I'm a businessman selling a product people buy
Why would you want to be making a profit off of racism?
Gary: Because it's a legal product
But don't you have a moral principle not to promote something like this?
Gary: In our country the almighty dollar says it all, ma'am
Are you a racist?
Gary: No. are you?
No, but I would never sell soap like this.
Gary: Well, that's you're prerogative
Would you consider not selling it anymore? I think you''ll have customers, who after seeing this story, won't want to come to your shop.
Gary:I'm glad you people (Fox59) are putting it on the air because we're going to have customers. Some will come in and look at the soaps out of curiosity, and then buy other things. You people are the leaches of the world putting it on the 6 O'clock news. We've sold it for ten years and we've had one complaint in ten years. Evidently that one complaint a month or so ago, has built into this giant festering sore of racism. I'm selling 20-30 bars of soap a year.
And you say its popular.
Gary: Yeah
Do you believe some of your customers are buying because they're racist and they're getting a kick out of buying the soap?
Gary: Some of them think it's funny
There's nothing funny about racism.
Gary: Alright, that's your opinion.
Standing defiant to pressure, Dewester says he will keep selling the soap but he plans to do that somewhere else. He said he has decided to move his shop out of the Logan Village Mall in Noblesville. He maintains that he has a right to sell the controversial products.

This advice has been handed down by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its staff report on its annual Article IV Consultation with public and private sector officials in Barbados, which concluded on September 24 this year.
In the report released yesterday, Wednesday, the IMF applauded the Barbadian governments November Budget move to increase the VAT to 17.5% (now the highest in the region). However, the Executive Directors of the IMF, on whose recommendations the staff report is based, advised that it should not be reduced to its previous 15% after the promised review in 18 months by government. Instead, the IMF said that not only had VAT receipts for the year been weak, but preliminary data showed that receipts were coming in weaker than expected for the new Budget period, which would place governments planned adjustments for the coming year at risk.
The Executive Directors of the IMF urged government to improve its revenue collection strategies - advocating that VAT be increased to 18% and for the many tax exemptions and zero-rated concessions to be eliminated. The IMF also suggested that government should increase the islands highly attractive 2% maximum corporate tax for international business entities by a further percentage point while reducing tax exemptions over the medium-term.
The IMF directors noted that the global crisis severely impacted the Barbados economy, especially its key sectorstourism, financial services, and real estate. The economy is expected to rebound gradually but downside risks persist mainly from the uncertain global economic environment.
The report also commended the authorities for adopting a Medium-Term Fiscal Strategy aimed at generating a balanced budget and reducing the high public debt-to-GDP ratio. However, the directors emphasized that to place public debt on a sustainable path, additional measures will be necessary. They encouraged efforts aimed at streamlining government operations, while continuing to rein in current spending. They noted that prioritizing expenditure would also make room for moderate increases in capital spending to support medium-term growth.
The staff report also stated that the directors observed that while the Barbadian dollars 2:1 peg to the United States dollar has provided a valuable anchor to Barbados, its real exchange rate may have become somewhat overvalued, and they called for decisive fiscal adjustment to improve Barbados foreign reserves if it was to safeguard the viability of the peg.
The IMF directors welcomed the authorities efforts to improve the supervision of nonbank financial institutions, an area of weakness highlighted by the recent demise of two insurance companies. They called for timely action to consolidate nonbank financial supervision into the Financial Services Commission and underscored the need to resolve the problematic insurance companies to lift market uncertainty and provide clarity on contingent fiscal costs.
They also acknowledged the relatively good business environment in Barbados, but raised concerns over the countrys weak and declining productivity growth. They encouraged Barbadian authorities to further streamline government agencies and procedures, and look for ways to broaden growth sources, as a means of offsetting declining productivity levels.

Beer manufacturer Red Stripe says a price increase is likely in the New Year due to the increased Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on beer.
Finance Minister Audley Shaw yesterday said the SCT per litre charged onbeers and stouts is now $1,334.00.
This has moved up from $960.00, or up by about 1/3 from the previous tax.
Red Stripe says the latest decision by government is discriminatory to beer, which has the lowest alcoholic content per litre.
Yesterday, Minister Shaw changed a tax regime he implemented two weeks ago that sought to havetax based on the alcoholic content of beverages.
Head of Corporate Relations at Red Stripe, Marguerite Cremin says the company has to consider a price increase because of the increased costs its facing.
She adds that government revenues are likely to also go down.
Meantime, Red Stripe wants to meet with Prime Minister Bruce Golding and Finance Minister Audley Shaw to discuss the taxation policy.
Red Stripe had welcomed the tax regime implemented on December 1, saying the playing field had been levelled with the SCT placed at $960.00.
Miss Cremin says manufacturers of beer will be paying 18% more than other alcoholic beverages.
