VP Records and Flava at odds
04 May 2008 | by Phlex, Staff Writer

A major brouhaha over who produced the 83 and Rub-a-Dub rhythms is brewing but that dispute is the mere precursor for what could be a major battle between local producers and reggae label, VP Records.

Flava_Beres.jpgThe dispute stems from a release issued by Greensleeves Publishing which suggested that a 21 year-old musician, Llamar Brown co-produced the 83 Rhythm (Greensleeves Records) and Rub A Dub rhythm (VP Records) with Kemar Flava McGregor.

However, No Doubt Records chief executive officer Kemar McGregor denied that calling it a bare-faced lie and that there was no co-producer of his rhythm.

VP/Greensleeves needs to get the facts straight, Llamar is a musician, he plays keyboard for No Doubt, he is not the co-producer, he cannot be listed as a co-producer, he is no producer. Anything Llamar plays in my studio, I tell him to play, I am a musical youth, I tell musicians how I want them to play, so I dont know where this is coming from, he said.

He said that he had even called Chris Chin at VP Records about the release, but Chin said he was not aware of the problem.

I am never going to sign to VP, when my ting start, there was no VP or Greensleeves, just No Doubt, radio stations like IRIE and the people. I dont want my thing tie up, reggae music is bigger than VP, there are many opportunities to licence your music out there in film, commercials etcetera, so while I respect VP for what they do, I want to be able to negotiate and set my own prices, he said.

McGregor also hinted that No Doubt Records was on the verge of merging with another major label to distribute their music.

We want to be in control of our destiny, if were going sign any deal, it must be non-exclusive. I am creating a future and legacy for other youths to come and benefit from, he said.

He said that he had enjoyed an excellent working relationship with VP and his work will be released on several major VP releases this Summer and Fall including those of Riche Spice, Morgan Heritage and Etana.

I dont know where this information is coming from, but VP needs to be careful to get its facts straight, he said.

In the Greensleeves Publishing release, it was announced that it had signed the young producer Llamar Riff Raff Brown who has recently been working with the top reggae artists producing tracks for Morgan Heritages new album Mission In Progress and Richie Spices new album Gideon Boot and upcoming albums by Beenie Man, Gyptian, and Etana.

In the release, Llamar was quoted as saying: I am very excited about my new venture with Greensleeves Music Publishing. I am certain that the future with myself and Greensleeves Records holds endless possibilities and I am honored to be a part of the family.

VP'S GROWING MONOPOLY
Insiders believe that this is a covert move to control the publishing rights of reggae hit records. They are concerned about the growing power of VP Records.

VP Records bought Greensleeves earlier this year in a major move that irked most industry insiders. Some producers are already bristling over the fact that VP Records only offers US$5,000 on average to licence a dancehall or reggae track, even though some producers spent over US$20,000 to produce, market and distribute a typical rhythm project. This had led to several producers, especially those in roots rock, shelving plans to do rhythm projects. Dancehall is cheaper to produce but even those producers are feeling the economic pinch.

"Something has to be done, the cost to produce music has increased, electricity gone up, the cost of stampers gone up, even the plastic to package the product has gone up, yet still VP has not increased the prices it pays to license our music, something has to give," one producer said on condition of anonymity.

STATEN ISLAND

* Two men were arrested after they beat and tried to rob an undercover cop in New West Brighton.

The officer went to a home on Britton Street near Broadway shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday to investigate allegations of prostitution.

Two men greeted him at the front door and one asked, "Are you a cop?"

The other jumped at the cop and tried to kick him.

"I'm not a cop. I hate cops!" the undercover said.

The men rifled through the officer's pockets, then tried to drag him into the house.

Cops moved in, broke up the melee and arrested Manuel Gonzalez, 26 and Michael Johnson, 19.

They were charged with robbery, assault and weapons and drug possession, police said.

A teenager charged with taking part in the murder of a Yonkers diner deliveryman carrying an $18 order says he never meant to hurt the victim.

Xavier Goodwine said in court documents that the deadly shooting "wasn't supposed to happen like that." He says he and an unnamed friend planned only to rob deliveryman Martin Antonio Perez.

The 19-year-old Goodwine faces murder, attempted robbery and other charges in the Dec. 17 slaying.

He said in court papers that he and his friend ordered from the Emerald Diner to set a robbery. He says Perez ran off when the suspects confronted him in a stairwell at the Riverview apartment complex.

Goodwine said he heard a shot while chasing Perez.

Perez was working to make holiday money for his baby daughter.

DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- A Dallas man who spent more than 27 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit was freed Tuesday, after being incarcerated longer than any other wrongfully convicted U.S. inmate cleared by DNA testing.

art.woodard.jpg

James Lee Woodard had been in prison for more than 27 years before DNA cleared him.

corner_wire_BL.gif

James Lee Woodard stepped out of the courtroom and raised his arms to a throng of photographers.

Supporters and other people gathered outside the court erupted in applause.

"No words can express what a tragic story yours is," state District Judge Mark Stoltz told Woodard at a brief hearing before his release.

Woodard, cleared of the 1980 murder of his girlfriend, became the 18th person in Dallas County to have his conviction cast aside. That's a figure unmatched by any county nationally, according to the Innocence Project, a New York-based legal center that specializes in overturning wrongful convictions.

"I thank God for the existence of the Innocence Project," Woodard, 55, told the court. "Without that, I wouldn't be here today. I would be wasting away in prison."

Overall, 31 people have been formally exonerated through DNA testing in Texas, also a national high. That does not include Woodard and at least three others whose exonerations will not become official until Gov. Rick Perry grants pardons or the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals formally accepts the ruling of lower courts that have already recommended exoneration.

Woodard was sentenced to life in prison in July 1981 for the murder of a 21-year-old Dallas woman found sexually assaulted and strangled near the banks of the Trinity River.

He was convicted primarily on the basis of testimony from two eyewitnesses, said Natalie Roetzel, the executive director of the Innocence Project of Texas. One has since recanted in an affidavit. As for the other, "we don't believe her testimony was accurate," Roetzel said.

Like nearly all the exonorees, Woodard has maintained his innocence throughout his time in prison. But after filing six writs with an appeals court, plus two requests for DNA testing, his pleas of innocence became so repetitive and routine that "the courthouse doors were eventually closed to him and he was labeled a writ abuser," Roetzel said.

"On the first day he was arrested, he told the world he was innocent ... and nobody listened," Jeff Blackburn, chief counsel for the Innocence Project of Texas, said during Tuesday's hearing.

Well, that's that! Microsoft has officially pulled its bid for Yahoo! -- inflated for good measure this weekend by another $5 billion -- after the company did "not move toward accepting [the] offer", asking again for even more, another $4 bil (totaling $9b more than the original offer). In a letter from Ballmer to Yang, he states that Microsoft also won't be looking at its option for a hostile takeover, stating that Yahoo! likely "would take steps that would make [it] undesirable as an acquisition"; Ballmer then goes on to make a few backhanded criticisms of Yahoo's possible new partnerships with Google (which is no surprise). Good night, Microhoo, the monstrous, hamstrung, lumbering mega-merger that might have been.

ATLANTA -- The Georgia State Patrol is feeling the pinch from high gasoline prices.
Trooper Larry Schnall, a spokesman for the agency, said troopers are being asked to reduce the amount of time spent on the road by 25 percent.
Schnall said the troopers are being asked to perform more discretionary patrols, road checks, sobriety check points, license check points and possibly operate laser and radar more often.

Schnall said motorists should not notice any difference and that patrols still will be visible.
"We just may not be on rolling patrols for the entire eight hours of our shift," Schnall said.
The change comes as gas toped $3.60 a gallon in the Atlanta area.
NEWARK (CBS) Two men fatally shot each other after they brawled in Newark on Saturday afternoon.

The incident began around 2 p.m., said Det. Todd McClendon, a Newark police spokesman.

Police did not confirm what sparked the brawl, nor disclose the names of the c****atants, but witnesses told CBS 2 the victims were a teenager nicknamed Bishop, and a 22-year-old named Jeron. They say there was a fight over turf, and may have involved a third man who fled in a car. One of the weapons used was an uzi, a type of submachine gun.

"I know both of them both of them," said Newark Resident Amani Shakur. Both are generally good guys. I don't know what happened."

McClendon said one man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to University hospital in Newark, where he died a short time later.

There have now been 22 homicides in Newark this year, compared to 31 that had occurred by this time last year.

May 3, 2008 -- The suspected leader of a massive Central American cocaine trafficking ring has been busted after New York drug-enforcement agents cracked the case, federal prosecutors said yesterday.

Jorge Mario Paredes-Cordova, 42, a Guatemalan national who had been under indictment in New York since 2003, was arrested Thursday in Honduras and was brought before a Miami judge yesterday.

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Jacksonville is normally known as the "river city." But now, the city has a new title.

The national magazine, The Advocate, named the city one of the "top five emerging cities for gay and lesbians."

"I think that it's great that they're becoming open-minded enough to do that and to have no shame," said Roy Buice, who works at Rainbows and Stars in Riverside.

The publication based the ranking on U.S. Census numbers. For every 1,000 Jacksonville households, there are 7.75 same-sex couples.

Plano, Texas ranked number one, before Jacksonville, which was number two on the list.

The magazine points to Jacksonville's strenths -- the river, ocean, parks, museums and growing population. It also mentions Riverside, San Marco, Avondale and the beaches as areas where the majority of same-sex couples live.

Buice, who has lived in Riverside for more than 20 years, says he has noticed a large influx of same-sex couples in the past few years. Many of them shop at Rainbows and Stars.

"This is one of the only true gay stores in probably 400 miles," said Buice.

He said people come from all over northeast Florida and southern Georgia travel to Riverside to shop at the store, which sells everything from clothing to artwork.

It's not just the store that appeals to his customers, he says it's the feeling they get from the people of Jacksonville.

"I think they're probably one of the best cities around for being open to the gay community."
KINGSLAND, Ga. -- After several residents received unsolicited packages of traveler's checks or money orders from Africa, Kingsland police have issued a fraud alert warning people that the documents are fraudulent and telling people not to attempt to cash them.
Police said that the packages that arrive either from the U.S. Post Office or from commercial delivery services ask the recipient to cash the checks or money orders, keep some of the money for their trouble and send the rest of the money to an address in Africa.
Police said that 15 Kingsland residents have received similar packages since July 15.

Kingsland police and law enforcement personnel at Naval Station Kings Bay are both warning residents about the scam and reminding people that attempting to cash fraudulent checks or money orders is a felony.
Visa recently issued an alert about $500 Visa-branded counterfeit travelers checks being sent to U.S. consumers with a request that the checks be cashed, a percentage retained by the recipient, and the balance sent to addresses mainly in Nigeria.
Anyone who receives such a package is asked to notify law enforcement in your area.

More than 200 gallons of diesel fuel were stolen from an area school district Friday morning.

McLennan County Sheriffs investigators said they believe someone cut the locks on a Hallsburg Independent School District gate between 12:30 and 8 a.m. Friday and stole 232 gallons of diesel fuel from an above-ground gas tank, Sheriffs Lt. Clay Perry said.

The theft happened at a maintenance yard at 2313 Hallsburg Road, Clay said.

Perry said he had no reason to believe the theft was related to two diesel thefts earlier this year. In January, thieves siphoned about 100 gallons of diesel fuel from work trucks in the 4700 block of Orchard Lane, Perry said.

Another 200 gallons of diesel were stolen from work trucks at a business in the 1500 block of East Tinsley Road in Robinson.

Perry said investigators have leads in Fridays theft. No arrests have been made.

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- A Bronx man has died, a week after he was assaulted on the subway.

Police say Samuel Owens, 44, was riding a 6 train in the morning hours of April 25 when he was approached by a group of men. The men allegedly stole his wallet and beat him up on the train near 110th Street and Lexington Avenue.

Owens apparently went home, but didn't call 911 until nearly 15 hours later, when he was rushed to Lincoln Hospital. Owens was pronounced dead Friday, a week after the incident.

The Medical Examiner has ruled the incident a homicide, but has yet to determin the exact cause of death.

Police are still investigating the incident.

RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Police are investigating how a 5-year-old boy from Riviera Beach got a gun and accidentally shot himself through the foot.

The boy told police he found the gun in a pile of trash and then accidentally shot himself. His parents took him to the hospital where he was treated and release.

Investigators say they doubt the boy's explanation and have received conflicting stories about where he got the weapon.

In his early years, he was known as 'nameless' and produced dub plates for sound systems such as 'Nemesis and 'Flawless.' During this period, he began searching for his true identity. One night, he had a dream in which he saw fire falling from the heavens. In his dream, there was a Rastafarian in his house saying to him that he must know himself. As a result, he sought refuge in the Rastafarian faith believing that Selassie was God and became totally immersed in the Religion.

Knowing that he was raised in a Christian home, he prayed for God's guidance because he was confused about the path he was taking. While studying the bible intensely, he stumbled on Acts 4:12 which reads,"...There is no other name under Heaven given among men by which we must be saved." This passage made him realize that Jesus Christ is the only way. Praises be to God, he received the word with thanksgiving. As a result, he shaved his hair and turned fully to the Bible for guidance and inspiration. He made the bold step of attending a church crusade at the New Life Assembly of God, Constant Spring Road. There, he got saved and baptized.

With the passion of knowing Christ came, another passionthe passion of gospel music. He pursued his dreams of doing God's music by approaching Tommy Cowan who recorded his first single 'Barrier'. Nicholas continued to produce songs such as "Pop off the Word" and collaborated with Kerron Ennis on "Holy Ghost Church." He has worked on projects for Bless a.k.a. Prodigal Son, Chevelle Franklyn, Robert & Jeneve Bailey and Danny Browne. Also, he has ministered in Canada, USA, London England and several small Islands, shared stage with Papa San, CeCe Winans and has opened a stage for Kirk Franklin in ST Maarten.

Roderick Reid is not a mellow vibes promoter

Friday 2 May 2008 @ 5:44 pm

The members of the GLK Entertainment Group, the official promoters of Mello Vibes and Yesterday, have distanced themselves from popular promoter Roderick Reid who they say resigned from the organization almost a year ago.

Rodrick Reid was never a promoter of Mello Vibes, however he was a promoter of Yesterday, and had a minor share in that event. For some time, he has not been actively involved in the promotion of that show. He had resigned from the GLK Entertainment group because of creative differences. The promoters of GLK promoters, in no shape or form condone any act between anyone of the same sex, and condemn categorically any act of molestation and exploitation of children, Gyete Ghartey, who is a partner of the group, said in a release issued today.

Popular party promoter Rodrick Reid will appear before the courts today to answer charges of indecent assault and gross indecency after administering alcohol to a minor with the intent of committing an indictable offence. He is accused of molesting a boy who was under his supervision

Reid is accused of crimes committed in his capacity as a probation officer. He has not been involved in Yesterday for several months. While Mello Vibes, an event he is not affiliated with, is geared towards adults, young people dont come to our event, it is catered to an older demographic. Reid never played a role in the promotion of Mello Vibes, Mr. Ghartey said.

The direct promoters of Mello Vibes and Yesterday are Omar Perrin and Gyete Ghartey. Both events are skewed towards an older demographic where songs from 70s, 80s, and 90s dominate the turntables.

The allegations against Rodrick Reid are unfortunate, but everyone is innocent until proven otherwise so we are waiting the final decision of the courts, Ghartey concluded.

Delivery Man Saves Woman After She's Pinned For Days By Her Dead Husband

Delivery Man Saves Woman After She's Pinned For Days By Her Dead Husband

Wednesday April 30, 2008

It was a terrible end to a long and happy marriage - and it nearly cost a woman her life. The fact that it didn't has a lot to do with fate and a very observant newspaper carrier.

This bizarre story unfolded on the weekend, when Bruce Pitts was on his regular route delivering the morning paper to people in the town of Marion, Illinois. He rode by the home of Blanche and Fred Roberts, two seniors who he came to like after the wife left him touching notes indicating she was 'praying' for his safety as he completed his tasks in bad weather.

Pitts has come to know his customers' habits over the three years he's been delivering the dailies and that's why he was disturbed by what he saw at the Roberts house early Sunday. The deliveryman noticed that several papers had piled up outside their door, something they never did. And he began to worry something was wrong.

Still, it wasn't his business, so he completed his route, went home to his wife and took a nap. But Pitts couldn't get the customers he'd never met face-to-face out of his mind. "It was never like them to leave a newspaper in their tube," he recalls. "That wonderful, small voice inside me said, 'This isn't right.'"

So he and his wife drove back to the home.

They rang the doorbell but no one answered. And that's when Pitts found an unlocked side door and went inside. What he saw stunned him. Fred Roberts, his 77-year-old customer, had apparently had a heart attack last Wednesday after coming in from mowing the lawn and died, keeling over right onto his wife and pinning her right leg beneath him.

The 84-year-old woman had been unable to move her heavy set husband and had been trapped beneath him for five long days. She was weak after so long without sustenance but still alive. "The good Lord was with her," Pitts remembers. "She was not scared, wasn't panicking. She was conscious, talking. Just peaceful. It was remarkable."

She told him her husband was 'sleeping' and asked for water. Paramedics whisked the senior to a local hospital where she's said to be making remarkable progress. But she might not be alive if it wasn't for the deliveryman, his keen sense that something wasn't right and his willingness to actually do something about it.

Now Pitts thinks back on those good wishes the woman he saved had written him all those years. "Blanche would say, 'I've been praying for you at night whenever the weather's bad, realizing you're out in it delivering our papers,'" he muses. "We'd always say a little prayer back."

And on Sunday, one of them finally came true.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Police say a University of Wisconsin student called 911 from her cell phone shortly before she was killed but a dispatcher hung up, didn't call back and never sent police.

The police chief in Madison, Wisconsin, says it's too early to know if a better response could have saved 21-year-old Brittany Zimmermann or helped police capture her killer.

Authorities haven't released the content of the call, but police say it should have been enough for the Dane County 911 operator to take seriously.

Zimmermann was found dead in her apartment in what police say was a random crime. They haven't identified a suspect. But they have ruled out her fiance, who found the body and shared the apartment.

The 911 center says it's investigating the incident to decide if employees should be disciplined. A spokesman says he doesn't think "there's anything to apologize for at this time."

HAGATNA, Guam - Barack Obama was leading Hillary Rodham Clinton in presidential caucuses on Guam, which has assumed unexpected importance in a historic Democratic race in which every delegate matters.

With 15 out of 21 districts reporting, Obama was ahead with 1,393 votes to 1,222 for those pledged to Hillary Rodham Clinton.

More than 3,000 votes were expected in heavy turnout at caucuses in the U.S. territory, where neither candidate campaigned.

Four pledged delegate votes were at stake on the island 8,000 miles from Washington. Guam also has five superdelegates and some of those are being determined in the caucus voting as well.

Slow ballot-by-ballot counting was under way in the territorial legislative building after votes were hand carried from 21 caucus sites.

Long lines of voters were reported in schools, community centers and other caucus sites that were open for voting all day Saturday.

U.S. citizens in Guam have no vote in the November presidential election, but the close Clinton-Obama race is giving them an unaccustomed role in the nomination process.

Voters picked eight pledged delegates who will have only one-half vote each at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in August.

Presidential caucuses on Guam usually pass without much notice from the candidates.

This time, Obama and Clinton made their case for the territory's four regular delegates with local advertising and long-distance interviews.

Lines formed early at some caucus sites.

Cynthia Estrada of Dedeo said she was making up her mind while waiting to vote, but she was leaning toward Clinton.

"She's had the experience," she said. "She's got her husband to help her."

Yona resident Tommy Shimizu said he was voting for Obama delegates.

"It's the fact that he grew up in Hawaii, and I think he can make change," he said. "I think it's time for that."

Clinton and Obama pitched improved health care and economic opportunity as they courted Guam voters from across the international date line.

Both candidates bought local advertising and conducted media interviews. In their protracted race for the nomination, no contest is being ignored.

Both Clinton and Obama say they've got the better health plan for Guamanians.

Obama said in an interview with Pacific Daily News that he would support reexamination of a $5.4 million Medicaid spending limit imposed on the territory. Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton, told KUAM radio earlier that his wife would work to remove the cap.

Hillary Clinton also has called for Guamanians to be able to vote in presidential elections.

FORT WORTH -- An Arlington woman whose false cry of rape led her husband to kill her lover is found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
Tracy Roberson cried when the Tarrant County judge on the case, read the verdict just before 5:30, Friday afternoon.
"We have always believed in our indictment. I think the jury reached the right verdict," said prosecutor, Sean Colston.
Back in 2006, Tracy Roberson's husband, Darrell, arrived at the couple's home in Arlington. He saw his wife inside a truck with another man, Devin LaSalle.
According to the prosecution, Mr. Roberson fired his weapon after his wife cried rape.
Mrs. Roberson will spend the weekend in jail. The punishment phase in the case is scheduled for Monday morning. She faces probation to 20 years in prison.

What Happened:Two families were shattered by a night of passion and rage last week as a pair of fathers faced off in a south Arlington subdivision.

Now a father of three is out on bail and facing a murder charge. His wife might have to raise their children alone. And his wife's friend, also a father of three, is dead from a gunshot wound to the head.
Darrell Roberson, 38, turned himself in at the Collin County Jail on Sunday after a murder warrant was issued for him. He was charged with killing 32-year-old Devin LaSalle as he sat in his pickup outside the Robersons' home. Mr. Roberson has been released on $100,000 bail.

"The sad part, from all the indications, is nobody has talked about them being anything but upstanding people who have never been in trouble with the law," said Lt. Blake Miller, an Arlington police spokesman.
He said there could be more charges filed in the investigation. Detectives are still trying to clarify some of the timelines, positions of the participants during the shooting and an allegedly false claim of rape, Lt. Miller said.
Police documents, based on interviews with the Robersons and one of their daughters, tell a story of infidelity and terrible timing.

Mr. Roberson left his home on Ivy Glen Drive the night of Dec. 10 to play cards with friends in Dallas. His wife, Tracy Roberson, 35, and their three daughters stayed behind.
After her husband left, Mrs. Roberson sent Mr. LaSalle a text message: "Hi friend, come see me please! I need to feel your warm embrace. If ur unable too I completely understand!!!"
Mr. LaSalle drove to her home in his Chevrolet Silverado pickup. When he knocked on the door, Mrs. Roberson answered wearing only underwear and a robe.

The couple went to Mr. LaSalle's truck, parked in front of the house.
While they were in the car, Mr. Roberson called home repeatedly but got no answer. Police determined that he called his wife 19 times between 1:33 and 2:12 a.m. Finally, his 7-year-old daughter answered.
The girl searched the home but couldn't find Mrs. Roberson. She told her father that she had heard a knock on the door earlier and thought her mother was still outside.

Mr. Roberson drove home to Arlington and shined his high beams on the Silverado. Police said he saw Mr. LaSalle kissing Mrs. Roberson's chest as the couple sat in the truck.
Mr. Roberson approached with a handgun and yelled at his wife to "get your [expletive] out of the car." Mr. LaSalle tried to speed away he hit the accelerator hard enough to leave tire marks on the pavement and Mr. Roberson fired four shots into the truck, police said.

One bullet hit Mr. LaSalle in the head. He was pronounced dead at 2:40 a.m. in front of the Robersons' house. Mrs. Roberson tried to tell her husband that she was being raped, but he didn't believe her story, according to a recording of the 911 call that police have not released.
Lt. Miller said it's not clear whether any of the shots were intended for Mrs. Roberson. She told detectives that her husband was shooting at the truck "to hurt whomever."
"This case is far from finished," Lt. Miller said.

Update- Charges against the husband were dropped after the grand jury refused to indict him. He has no charges pending against him at this time.

NY 'GUN RUN' RING LASSOED

May 3, 2008

May 3, 2008 -- A gun-running ring that put dozens of illegal firearms on the streets of New York City has been completely dismantled after a group of out-of-state buyers was indicted, federal authorities said yesterday.

The group of "straw purchasers" bought guns legally at shops in two Alabama counties and sold them to dealers who dumped them on the streets of Brooklyn from late 2006 through April 2007, according to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Special Agent William McMahon.

Jacson White, 30, Peggy Kratz, 27, Ginny Brown, 29 and Melinda Bennett, 28, each face 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for buying 21 guns - including 9mm's and .380s - and selling them to city gun dealers, authorities said.

McMahon called the operation a "significant gun-running ring which we were able to close down quickly."

The enterprise was headed by James Brady, 31, of Brooklyn who pleaded guilty to gun trafficking in February.

In late 2006, he began using the Alabama group to help make the buys, authorities said.

We know HTC's got a big announcement coming this Tuesday, and while we can't say for sure it's going to the Touch Diamond, if today's leaked images and specs are at all accurate we think they might have something big on their hands. Check it out:
  • 2.8-inch VGA display
  • WinMo 6.1 Pro
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
  • eGPS, FM tuner
  • Quad-band HSDPA 7.2
  • 4GB internal flash, microSD slot
  • 528MHz CPU
  • 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus
  • 10.7mm (0.47-inches) thick
  • Supposedly also features an orientation sensor / accelerometer
Whether it's got a QWERTY keyboard could still be up for grabs, especially since that configuration might belong to the CDMA-based Raphael. Still, the it makes sense HTC wouldn't want the XPERIA X1 they made for Sony Ericsson to be their best engineered device on the market for long. We'll be watching this one closely.

Sorry Mario, but your Wii Wheel just got lapped, backed over and left in the dust. Heck, even the Xbox 360 Wireless Racing Wheel looks toyish propped up next to this. Then again, neither of the previously mentioned accessories will put a $349.99 hole in your bank account, but did you really expect anything else from an officially licensed Porsche product? According to Fanatec, it took the firm seven years to acquire the license, and it required that the wheel be "the best out there." We can't judge the quality from here, but we can tell you it supports wireless USB technology and boasts a trio of force feedback motors, a 6+1 speed H-pattern gear shifter, cordless pedals, an automotive grade leather covering, a key-shaped 1GB flash drive for storing settings and compatibility with Sony's PlayStation 3 and PCs of (almost) all ages. Look at it this way: it's still probably cheaper than two tanks of premium.

Busta Rhymes prepares Blessed and pushes back Back on My BS

Tuesday 29 April 2008 @ 9:55 pm

Dont worry: Busta Rhymes will return to his B.S. mode down the line. Although his upcoming album will be called Blessed, he hasnt abandoned the title Back on My Bullsh; that will be the next album. He recently shot videos for the songs We Made It, which features Linkin Park, and the Mixtape Monday favorite Dont Touch Me (Throw Da Water on Em).

The track was produced by LV and Sean C., a.k.a. production duo Grind Music. After a session to hear beats one night, Sean C. actually played Busta an unfinished track. Even in its embryonic stage, the instrumental was so crazy that Rhymes was extremely inspired.

I was saying, This sh is so hot that if you touch it, you might burn yourself, Bust recalled with his stadium-wide grin. So it was just saying that to myself. I thought that was a dope hook. Then the first single on my last album was Touch It. So I thought it would be funny and ironic if people heard me come out with a record called Dont Touch Me. Throw Da Water on Em is just to cool them off, cause we so sizzling. When they burn themselves, they gonna need some water thrown on them. Its just Busta Rhymes giving people what they been definitely asking me to give them.

Blessed is due in the summer.

Artistes on warpath Second attack launched on Red Stripe

Friday 2 May 2008 @ 5:52 pm

Dancehall artistes are planning another counter attack on beer giants Red Stripe in what is shaping up to be an epic battle.

The artistes say they are now prepared to perform for free during at least one major event as long as there are no Red Stripe products being sold or consumed at the venue.

So far, artistes such as Beenie Man, Elephant Man and Voicemail are among those willing to take this stance.

Dem (Red Stripe) cyaan tek a stand gainst we an we nuh tek a stand gainst dem, said Beenie Man in a telephone interview from New York yesterday.

Wi need fi know what wi doing, because dancehall is our music. A nuh Red Stripe alone wi a tek di stand against, but even wid di whole 2 o clock lock-off ting to.

Statement

A statement issued by Red Stripe recently expressed its intention to withdraw sponsorship of live music events, including Reggae Sumfest. It stated: While our most recent efforts through the Coalition of Corporate Sponsors have met with some measure of success, some performers continue to propagate, through their live performances, violent and anti-social lyrics. Red Stripe will not be party to this, and thus we have taken the very difficult decision of withdrawing sponsorship from live music events. Consequently, Red Stripe will not renew our contract for title sponsorship of Reggae Sumfest and Sting. We will, however, ensure that our brands are made available whenever and wherever our loyal consumers enjoy premium alcohol beverages.

Since this statement was released, however, several artistes such as Mavado, Spice and Mutabaruka have voiced their displeasure with Red Stripes stance. Having mentioned their disgust during performances and in interviews the artistes now say they are ready to take things to another level.

Beenie Man says he originally wanted to do a free performance at the upcoming Reggae Sumfest show. That plan fell through so he has decided to plan the free show himself.

Wi need fi keep dis free show fi fight back gainst all these people who a fight gainst dancehall. Mi did waan do it a Sumfest, but dem done have dem ting line up, suh mi definitely a plan a show an mi only need di artiste dem fi support it. Not support for me, but for di entire Jamaica, Beenie Man told The STAR.

Sock show

According to Beenie, dem (Red Stripe) lef Jamaica an gone a Europe gone sponsor rock show, cause dem have a rock show wey dem a sponsor right now. Suh we as Jamaicans need fi stand firm together an mek dem know wi nuh like wah dem a do.

In the case of Elephant Man, he says he is onboard with the decision and is encouraging the artistes to unite for the cause.

If di artiste dem a unite an stand up fi sumn, Im with them. Suh if di artiste dem sey dem a guh come together an do a free event without Red Stripe being there, Ill do it. If Red Stripe a guh gwaan like dem waan withdraw an hurt di dancehall den we haffi do sumn bout dat, Elephant Man said.

He said that there must be more to Red Stripes decision than meets the eye and artistes should not be blamed.

To me, Red Stripe cyaan sey dat we (artistes) promoting violence, suh dat is why dem nah guh sponsor dancehall show, cause ova di years dem a do it suh why stop now? Ninja Man, Cutty Ranks, Super Cat, di whole a dem a did gangsta artiste wey do gangsta song, suh we nah do nuttn different, Ele said.

He continued, Dem fi come out an sey a sumn personal an stop put di blame pon di artiste dem. Dem a back Sumfest how long now wid di same artiste dem, suh why now?

Ninja Man, however, was not too concerned about Red Stripes decision. Mi nuh need sponsorship from Red Stripe or nobody, he said.

He, however, recommended, Dem need fi try sort out wha problem Red Stripe have wid di music fraternity. Dem get enough out a dancehall artiste now dats why dem can gwaan suh. Every one a dem products a artiste use to promote dem an mek dem big. But it simple, wi get back to the days of the 80s, mek wi leggo di sponsorship an start promote wi own ting again, without all the rules and constraints wey these sponsors come wid, Ninja said.

When THE STAR spoke to Oneil from Voicemail, he had his own theory of how a boycott from them could have an impact on the Red Stripe products.

We have several weekly dances that are held, so if we decide to come together and boycott their products then wi can put a dent in their sales and send a serious message, he said.

We can all sit here an beat roun di bush, Diageo dont give a about violence in Jamaica, the real reason, personally, I think it has a lot to do with the gay-bashing lyrics and Red Stripe dont want to come out and say this is the legitimate reason why we are pulling out.

Despite this stance, however, there is still no sign that the corporate giant is about to retract their statement. When contacted yesterday, Maxine Whittingham, head of Corporate Relations, told The STAR, We have taken a particular stance and we issued a statement and we stand by that statement.

TWO HIGH-PROFILE politicians have been identified on the notorious Peter King's tapes.

The two, who are men who have served in government, were seen entering King's residence, THE STAR has been reliably informed.

There is, however, no evidence that the men were involved in the stomach churning sexual activities that have been captured on the tapes.

Trade Ambassador King was fatally stabbed at his house, on Waterloo Road in New Kingston, in March 2006.

The accused, 23-year-old Sheldon Pusey, is claiming that he acted in self-defence when King made sexual advances at him.

On Monday, Supreme Court Judge Donald McIntosh ordered that all the exhibits, including the videotapes taken from King's house, be handed over to the defence.

It has been said that King had developed a habit of videotaping homosexual acts at his house. Many of these acts are on the tapes which the police had taken.

The court was told on Monday that some of the tapes could not be located. Sources say that the missing tapes may contain footage of many prominent professionals who are living a 'down-low' life.

But some of King's performers were not so lucky and their homosexual acts have now been revealed on the tapes which are to be viewed by Pusey's lawyers.

"It is disgusting and stomach churning," a source said. There is a sex act during which King is shouting the name of the God's begotten son, the source said.

"Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ," King is said to have been shouting in ecstasy as he wrapped his legs around the neck of a young lover.

THE STAR understands that there are scenes with young boys bathing in bathrooms in the nude with a voice, supposedly that of King, telling them how to pose.

Several prominent men are said to be featured on the tapes having sex. Scenes of anal sex and 'blow-jobs' are also in abundance on King's notorious tapes, THE STAR has been reliably informed.

If you ever wanted to know what a $42.00 Pepsi tastes like, just ask Marianne Anderson.

Same as a Pepsi that cost $2.00.

It was a lesson Anderson had no desire to learn when she went to Target on
Monument Road
last week.

Police say when Anderson paid for a Pepsi with a debit card, it was Brittany Williams, 20, that rang up the sale.

She acted like there was a problem with the receipt, like it wasn't going to print so I told her no big deal. Its $2.00. I don't need a receipt.

So Anderson left not realizing that her sale hadn't been closed. Police say Williams used the card reader to get back $40.00 cash Anderson's card. Something this shopper just happened to notice the next day.

I was shocked. You never think about having to have a receipt but when I got my statement and noticed I had a withdrawal I was upset.

Anderson says she went right back to Target and got her money back. That's when the store says they investigated Williams and found that she had scammed at least eighteen other people the same way, pocketing more than $1000.

We spoke to Target who issued this statement:

Information security is a top priority at target. We are committed to protecting the confidential information of our guests and team members. We have partnered with law enforcement as needed during their investigation of this situation.

Anderson plans she'll do her part to make sure this doesn't happen again.

I make sure I have a receipt and then everything is going through the bank OK.

Beenies tax case starts

Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 5:10 pm

The trial into the multimillion-dollar tax evasion case against popular dancehall artiste Moses Beenie Man Davis got under way yesterday in the Kingston Tax Court where two witnesses from the tax department testified.

The artiste, who was arrested on a warrant in October 2007, after failing to turn up for a hearing of the matter, is alleged to owe the state close to $48 million in taxes between the late 1990s and early 2000, at which time the entertainer was working with Shocking Vibes and Patrick Roberts, his former manager.

The tax authorities allege that Davis failed to pay over $29,290,116 in back taxes and $18,641,254 in penalties, both figures reaching a total of $47,931,371 during this period.

In the dark

When news of his debt broke, Davis said that he was unaware that his taxes were not being paid, as affairs of that nature were Roberts responsibility at the time.

Roberts had said that the tax-evasion case brought against the artiste was an obvious attempt to smear the artistes career as he had paid over a sum to the department in February, after which came a ridiculous assessment.

He said since then, he has written to the Inland Revenue Department and the Ministry of Finance, after which, he said the ministry acknowledged receipt of his letter and said they needed time to apprise themselves of the case.

Resident Magistrate Owen Parkins said the case is to continue on May 29.

Scott Storch produces CeCile, Beenie c****o

Wednesday 30 April 2008 @ 5:12 pm

Dancehall artiste CeCile is doing big things for her new album, Waiting to be released in July.

CeCile has been working with reknowed American producer Scott Storch and recently collaborated with the doctor, Beenie Man, on her first single entitled So Fly.

The single, So Fly, was produced by Storch for SoBe/Dangerzone records.

Storch is well known in the US for his work. He has produced Beyonce and Sean Pauls Baby Boy, 50 Cents Candy Shop and has worked with the likes of Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton and many others.

CeCile, in explaining how they managed to team up says, He (Storch) doesnt do much dancehall, but because Im signed to Dangerzone/SoBe Records and Scott Storch was producing a track with Brook Hogan and Beenie

She continued, I got some Scott Storch rhythms to record on, which was mostly hip hop, and Scot made Beenie Man hear the song I did and Beenie Man immediately jumped on the rhythm and when I got it back, it was on a completely different rhythm, more dancehall, and I loved it.

CeCile says the single will be the only song on the beat and so far she has been promoting it in Connecticut on Hot 93.7 and NY Hot 97, with Kay Slay and Pat McKay on Sirius Radio, and Link Up Radio, to name a few.

Featuring Shaggy

According to CeCile, This will be the first single that we will be distributing internationally and Ride Or Die will be the single being distributed locally off my new album.

But there is a lot more that fans can expect from CeCiles upcoming album, as she says, I just did a crazy song with Ding Dong called Dance for Baby G.

She added, The album will also feature Waiting, the original, and the remix featuring Shaggy. We also have other songs on it like Faking, but we have not left out the reggae, so we have two brandnew tracks, one is called No Disturb Sign and (the other) Kinda Love. And we have some other stuff on it like a collaboration with Junior Reid.

CeCile says, This album will serve for North America and the Caribbean and Im really looking forward to it because Ive never had an album in this region before.

CeCile has had an album released in Japan before and she also has one coming out in Europe soon.

Her next performance will be at the Apollo Theatre on May 4, where she is nominated for Best Female Vocalist for the song Waiting at the International Reggae and World Music Award (IRAWMA).

DASECA and Bugle wow fans

Friday 2 May 2008 @ 5:42 am

It was a jovial mood at the online and phone chat as DASECA and Bugle made their presence felt at the offices of Gleaner company on Tuesday.

With each member of the team at a computer, Bugle, Serani, David and Craig were b****arded by questions from fans who also exchanged jokes throughout the afternoon.

Some persons who were desperate to be made into stars, wanted to link with the DASECA trio. They asked how much it would cost to work with them and what they were looking for in an artiste.

Others were curious as to what exactly DASECA meant, David explained that the name DASECA stands for the names David, Serani, Craig in order of seniority.

Gain respect

Others wanted advice on how to be a good producer. One woman asked about the obstacles facing female producers in the music business. David told her that a females obstacle is completely different from whatever obstacles we went through because from what I observe in this business the men are always trying to get with the females. And to gain respect as an equal producer is another major obstacle. There were also many praises for all the hit songs the group had produced.

Bugle had many questions sent his way as fans wanted to know the inspiration for his soulful songs.

The singjay told his fans about a new song featuring Mavado, called Set Me Free. The women were eager to get closer to Serani and the other members of the trio and they asked about their personal lives, marriage and children.

After a humorous session online the group moved to the phone lines which were ringing off the hook. The women dominated the phone lines as they screamed for Serani and Bugle.

Memorable call

They had a fun time talking with the female fans who had crushes on all the guys. One young lady, who was a fan of Serani, couldnt even talk when she heard her artistes voice as she screamed and hung up the phone.

Another girl was surprised when she got through as she said, yuh know how long mi a try get through mi nuh know wah fi say, mi neva think mi woulda get through, Im a big fan of Serani and Bugle!

For an hour, young, eager females continued to call, but the most memorable call came from a lady in Miami. With a Spongebob-like laughter, the lady had the group in stitches as she spoke to Serani. Im calling for Serani when are you coming dis side? Oh my God I love your songs! I love She Loves Me, I . my boyfriend off and get him upset (laughs).

Bugle is there? Oh my God, let me speak to him!Wheres the little cutie with the braids? David I dont forget yuh either youre hot!

After two hours of talking on the phone and online, DASECA and Bugle obviously had a good time with the crazy antics of some of their fans.

Rub-A-Dub Riddim Delivers Mega Hits
01 May 2008 | A.K.A., Contributing Writer

The Rub-a-Dub riddim is straight reggae gold. With a throwback 70s sound, the rhythm is arguably the dominant one-drop project in Jamaica today. Richie Spices The Plane Land sums the quintessential Jamaican experience on traveling to the United States in the post 9-11 era, one that is relief (that you have arrived safely) and angst (that you are about to be interrogated and made belittled at the hands of US officials).

Here are a couple lines: the plane land, yes the plane land/saddle up myself fi tek interrogation/the plane land, yes the plane land/Mek up mi mind fi face immigration.

Then Richie uses great humour to detail the numerous discourtesies visited on the heads of anyone traveling in the US these days: draw out mi belt lef mi pants inna mi hand/scan all mi eye and ask mi whe mi come from/ tek off mi shoes, dem say tek off yu tam/if dem eva find yu wid a spliff, yu gone another land.

Etana represents well with the defiant I Am Not Afraid showing why she is regarded as one of the great finds in the world of reggae in the past two years. The song reaffirms her belief in the Most High even in the face of the evil which walks by night to devour your flesh.

Considered by many as the biggest hit single on the rhythm is Nesbeths Guns Out this Morning. You can see the clear arc of Nesbeths growth as a recording artiste because this is a gem of a song that details an experience which is common to almost every Jamaican whose life has been touched by deadly gun violence. When you get up in the morning and head to work and see the yellow crime scene tape and the spinning roofrack of lights on the police vehicles, your subconscious immediately makes note: guns out again this morning. The use of the voice filter (auto tune) adds a sweet melancholic quality to Nesbeths voice that works on several levels to show the pain and stresses that define the ghetto experience.

Morgan Heritages scathing Nothing to Smile About is a brilliantly produced song, one of their best efforts in the last four years, which asks serious questions of the political establishment. Other standout songs include Anthony Bs inspirational Striving and Teflons fiery Were Gonna Make It.

Special kudos to Kemar McGregor aka DJ Flava and keyboardist Llamar 'Riff Raff' Brown, the creators of the '83 Riddim' featuring the #1 Queen Ifrica hit 'Daddy Don't Touch Me there', who have yet another hit rhythm on their hands.

A man has been accused of attempting to pass a $360 billion check, which he claims was given to him by his girlfriends mother to start a record business, Fort Worth police said.

Charles Ray Fuller Charles Ray Fuller, 21, of Crowley, was arrested on April 22 on an accusation of forgery, police said.

Police responded to a report of a man attempting to pass the check about 4 p.m. that day at the Chase bank in the 8600 block of South Hulen Street, Fort Worth police Lt. Paul Henderson said.

The personal check was not made out to Mr. Fuller and when the bank contacted the check owner, the woman said she did not write a check for $360 billion.

Mr. Fuller was also accused of unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of marijuana, Lt. Henderson said. He may also face a theft charge in Crowley.

Lt. Henderson said he did not know if Mr. Fuller and his girlfriend were still together.

Choose either man or God

I am a 21-year-old Christian and I have been dating a 25-year-old guy for more than a year. We started having sex recently and I feel guilty about it. I know it's wrong and I want to stop, but I don't know how. He says he loves me and I love him too. We have been through a lot and mean a lot to each other. He said he wants to find God for himself and I agree with him. I can't give God to him. God will have to reveal Himself to my guy. But what must I do until he finds God?

I don't want to leave him and I know he doesn't want to leave me either. Pastor, what am I to do?

SM, St Andrew, Jamaica

Dear SM,

You have to make a decision. It is either the man or God. If you prefer the man, bear in mind that everybody will have to give account to God for himself/herself. The guy whom you are going with is not interested in becoming a Christian. He is quite willing to enjoy sex with you as long as you are willing to engage in sex with him. So I repeat, it is either the man or God. And only you can make the decision.

Title: We Can Work Things Out

Artiste: LA Lewis and Rashida Rose

Genre: Reggae/Dancehall

Rating:

LA Lewis with the support of unicef has released his latest music video promoting non-violent resolution in the song, We Can Work Things Out.

For years Lewis has been trying to get his name from off the walls, bus stops and other surfaces around Kingston to the ears of listeners. Under the tagline "together we can make peace increase" Lewis, alongside Rashida Rose, who is heard as back up on the track, advocates for peaceful ways of working out situations. A somewhat slow 'reggae-ish' song, Lewis deejays about persons who can easily resolve conflicts by talking through them.

Giving advice from someone who has been there, Lewis states "me LA Lewis was once a very bad man", yet Lewis says now he has changed.

While the message is a much-needed one, the song itself lacks that hit factor. The beat is boring and Lewis deejaying on the beat leaves much to be desired.

The quality of the video is poor even as it depicts scenes with persons arguing. There are clips of people involved in a traffic accident, a bar battle, a female attacking her lover and of course LA Lewis, wearing a straw hat, dancing and singing in front of a black screen. At the end of the video, Lewis and Rose make a presentation of the DVD to former Governor General Sir Howard Cooke.

A music video should put more than an image to the words of a song, but also tell a mini story. However, the concept is very simplistic, lacking true imagination and doesn't capture the true violent aspects of our society that would truly benefit from a peaceful outlook. The video doesn't encourage a viewer to watch, and could, arguably, lessen the effectiveness of the song.

Monster of the Deep

How the world's largest squid was caughtand the bidding war for the exclusive footage slated to be shown this spring.

John Bennett is used to the monotony. As captain of a New Zealand commercial fishing boat, he's accustomed to spending months at a time afloat in the Antarctic Ocean, staring atwell, nothing. "Just ice really, lots and lots of ice," says Bennett. "Sometimes, not even a seabird." On a particularly calm day in late January, Bennett was tending to his deep-sea fishing lineseach one 2,000 meters long (nearly a mile and a quarter), and sporting up to 10,000 baited hooksin hopes of a major toothfish haul. Suddenly, the calm was shatteredby the sight of a colossal squid surfacing near the stern. The beast, a 33-foot-long adult male weighing half a ton, had wrapped itself around one of Bennett's lines. "It was just this great big brown shape," recalls Bennett, who was watching from the bridge. "It came up right alongside us. Everyone was yelling and screaming."

Bennett hurried to the deck to confer with Geoff Dolan, an observer from the New Zealand Ministry of Fisheries who was on board. International law requires that anything caught in Antarctic waters must be kept onboard and documented to guard against overfishing. So Bennett really didn't have a choice but to haul in the squid. "We decided to get him onboard in as good a condition as we could," says Bennett. "If we'd released him, he wouldn't have survived." By then the crew had gaffed the creature in an attempt to get it off the line. But its grip was tight, both on the line and on the five-foot-long toothfish he was eating. "He wasn't giving up that fish," says Bennett. "When we finally pulled him in, the fish was half-eaten."

What Bennett and his crew pulled in that day turned out to be the largest colossal squid ever recoveredcause for considerable excitement aboard his ship, the San Aspiring, and around the world. As word of the catch spread late last month, the news wires buzzed with squidmania. WORLD'S LARGEST INVERTEBRATE CAPTURED read the headlines. If cut up for calamari, the stories said, the squid would produce rings the size of tractor tires. As word got out that the catch had actually been recorded on video, Bennett found himself in the middle of an international bidding war.

The colossal squid, it seems, is one of those creatures that captures our imagination, largely because it is so rarely captured. Including Bennett's catchand a 20-foot female he found floating dead in 2003only a handful have ever been recovered. Most of them were just damaged fragmentsa tentacle here, a dorsal fin there. The species wasn't even identified until 1925, when pieces of one were found inside the stomach of a sperm whale. More than a century after Jules Verne popularized the creature as a mythic, ship-wrecking monster in "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," the colossal squid remains very much a scientific mystery.

"We know relatively nothing about them," admits Steve O'Shea, director of the Earth and Oceanic Sciences Research Institute at the Auckland University of Technology and one of the world's leading squid experts. O'Shea says they are as long as their cousins, the giant squid, but much heavierand, O'Shea believes, more aggressive predators. Bennett's first catch helped fill in some blanks; his latest catch, at 990 pounds, is nearly three times the weight of his last. Which verifies what many scientists have suspected for years but never had the evidence to prove: these creatures get much, much larger than previously believed.

It's a point that O'Shea has been arguing for some time. He often examines the stomach contents of whales stranded off the coast of New Zealand and says that he's found a large number of colossal squid beaks that were clearly from specimens considerably larger than anything ever caught. Three years ago he proposed that a colossal squid could grow as big as half a ton. The reaction of his colleagues? "The scientific community laughed at me," he says.

But a half-ton squid was no laughing matter to Bennett and his crew. Getting it aboard took nearly two hours. It was slippery, Bennett said, much more "gelatinous" than his previous squid quarry. Though he says he never felt threatened by the creature, Bennett did get a close-up view of its massive beak, which he believes could have easily crunched his forearm. "Being alongside a creature like this is just awesome," he says. "It's easy to see why outlandish stories about them get stretched out."

Dolan, the Ministry of Fisheries observer, remembers being surprised at how docile and sluggish the squid was. "It really didn't put up much of a fight," he says. "Its tentacles were moving back and forth, but that's about it. It certainly wasn't grabbing crew members and pulling them back into the sea."

As it happens, Bennett had brought along a video camera in order to film a small documentary about Antarctic toothfishing for a New Zealand TV station (that's Chilean sea bass to you and me). He was able to capture a good bit of footage of the squid being hauled in. Bennett confirms that a production company in Auckland bought the footage, though he declines to specify what he was paid. An official with the Ministry of Fisheries told NEWSWEEK that offers to buy the footage had been pouring in and that some were "longer than a telephone number." Bennett said that a documentary featuring the coveted footage should be released sometime in April.

Once aboard, the squid was lowered into the ship's cargo hold and put on ice for the next two weeks as Bennett and his crew chugged 1,700 miles back to the southern coast of New Zealand. The squid remains frozen solid as preparations are being made to hand it over to the Museum of New Zealand in Wellington. That should happen on March 11, O'Shea says. But first, museum officials have to figure out how to store the thing. "The problem is we haven't seen it yet," says museum spokesperson Jane Keig. "We need to get it here to see how we'll preserve it."

That won't be easy, says O'Shea. "We're dealing with a 450-kilogram frozen lump of flesh. We've got to have a specially designed tank constructed." O'Shea estimates that it could take up to four days for the squid to completely thaw out, a delicate process that will leave him and his colleagues only a small time frame in which to take samples and examine it. Still, those precious minutes could prove more valuable than years worth of colossal squid research. "The scientific value is enormous. It'll more than double our knowledge," says O'Shea, who hopes the research will shed light on the species' hunting and mating behavior, its age and its intelligence (which O'Shea already suspects to be fairly negligible). The brain of a 275-kilogram giant squid is only about 20 grams and shaped like a doughnut, he says, "There's not a lot of comprehension going on up there." Might the colossal squid be brighter than its smaller cousin? "Doubtful," says O'Shea. "In all likelihood, it's one of the stupidest creatures in the sea."

As O'Shea prepares to study the half-ton specimen, he remains convinced there are bigger squids still to be found at sea. "There's probably a female out there that's a full ton," he says, noting that females tend to be half again as large as their male counterparts. Until Bennett sails again, it seems, the half-ton specimen will just have to do.

whitney_houston_daughter_bobbi.jpgIf the reports in the National Enquirer are to be believed then they alleged that during an argument with her mother, Whitney Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina tried to stab the legendary songbird before attempting to turn the knife on herself!

The magazine reported that the confrontation took place during an argument which took place a few days before strong>Kristina's 15th birthday. Family friend Ann Davis wouldn't give out too many details, but confirmed that Kristina "tried to stab" her mother with a razor, then started trying to cut herself.

Davis goes on to claim that the incident was touched off over Kristina's reluctance to live with Whitney.

Sources also revealed that Bobbi is getting help as she has landed in a Atlanta psychiatric ward as a result of her actions.

Houston's reps declined to comment.

NEW YORK (AP) -- A pile of dinosaur dung 130 million years old sold at a New York auction Wednesday for nearly $1,000.

The prehistoric deposit fetched $960, said a spokeswoman for Bonhams New York.

Its pre-auction estimate was $450.

The fossilized dung is from the Jura**ic era, the auction house said.

It looks like a rock on the outside and a colorful mineral inside.

The buyer was Steve Tsengas of Fairport Harbor, Ohio.

The 71-year-old owns OurPets, a company that sells products to treat dog and cat waste.

Tsengas bought the dung in hopes of motivating his employees and using it as a marketing tool by displaying it at the company's booth at trade shows, he said.

"Poop," he said, "is a big business in the pet industry."
