Two persons have taken a bold move to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Jamaica through volunteering to participate in the country's vaccine programme, which seeks to fine a cure for this deadly disease.
With more than 25,000 persons infected with HIV in Jamaica, 29-year-old fashion designer Paulette Rowe and 37-year-old art student Christopher William are proud participants in the local HIV Vaccine Research and hope to be part of scientific history one day.
Although both participants are not infected with the virus, Rowe said her friends and co-workers still have a difficult time accepting her decision to be part of the experiment.
Motivation
"Sometimes they call me 'lab rat' or 'guinea pig' but being the person I am and the knowledge I have about this disease, I know that I cannot contract HIV from participating in the programme. Therefore, I try to educate them by what I am doing, so they can also be a part of it," she revealed.
In responding questions about her motivation for entering this research, Rowe noted that "with so many AIDS cases in Jamaica a lot of persons are not aware and if I can help to curb the epidemic in this small way, I am going to do it. This is my contribution because I don't have the money to buy the medications for those who are infected".
Her colleague, William, ex-pressed similar sentiments in rationalising his participation in the research.
Controlled research
"I would like to see my son grow up in an HIV-free world and I am making an start to that process. I knew persons who died from this deadly disease, so I'd like to help to find a cure."
Both participants have been a part of the programme for the last 12 months.
The HIV Vaccine Research in Jamaica is a carefully controlled research in which an experi-mental vaccine is given to a healthy, HIV-negative person who is between the ages of 18 and 60. This participant will spend 12 months or more in follow-up study where researchers observe how their bodies respond to the trial.Laying a loved one to rest is not an easy task. For one family however, this was made worse when they turned up at the cemetery and discovered that another person had been buried in the spot that was reserved for their relative.
When the family and friends of the deceased woman arrived at the May Pen Cemetery last Saturday, they were not expecting the confusion they were greeted with.
After a funeral service on Windward Road, the woman's body was taken to the cemetery for interment.
The procession arrived at the cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday and immediately, friends and family noticed that things were not in order.
"When we got there, there was no one at the office post. There wasn't a log book or anything that could show us where the grave was located. We just walked in and went to the spot for the funeral," one of the mourners told THE STAR yesterday.
This would soon prove to be the least of their worries however, as when they made their way to the burial spot, they learnt that someone else had been buried there earlier that morning.
A family friend described the situation as "gross carelessness and past distasteful" and explained that the relatives of the deceased, who were mostly from overseas, were incensed.
Shocked and confused, the family tried to find out what had gone wrong. Two grave diggers were the only persons associated with the cemetery that were present and they reportedly offered to dig another grave for the deceased.
Eventually, a decision to remove the body that was wrongfully buried in the spot, was taken. The body was laid to rest close to two hours after it arrived at the cemetery, and after the priest, had to be recalled after he left in the confusion.
When THE STAR spoke to the priest, who wished not to be named, he confirmed that he had been waiting at the cemetery for over an hour, while friends and family of the deceased searched for her burial spot. He said he had suggested that the burial take place another day and left the cemetery. He was later called back when the spot had been found.
Repeated efforts to contact Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie and Town Clerk Errol Green, were unsuccessful.
A police sergeant who was allegedly caught collecting money to drop a firearm charge against a man was taken into custody on corruption charges by the Anti-Corruption Division on Sunday.
The policeman, Dennis Arthurs of the Spanish Town Police Station was picked up in the Oasis Shopping Plaza when a female complainant allegedly carried $50,000 worth of marked money to the officer with whom plans were made.
When the money exchanged hands, detectives who were nearby, swooped down and apprehended their colleague. He has since been placed at the Horizon Remand Centre in Kingston and is booked to appear in court later.
THE STAR understands that the money was allegedly being paid for the policeman to drop a case of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition against a man who was picked up by the police in Spanish Town last year with a hand gun.Electoral officials have started a frantic search for a new director of elections following yesterday's sudden resignation of Danville Walker.
Walker who had held the position for 10 years, resigned at a time when there is much speculation about a 'snap election'.
Nominated member of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), Dr Herbert Thompson, yesterday confirmed that Walker stepped aside, following mounting pressure, after it was revealed in court that he had sworn allegiance to a foreign power.
"Danville Walker's resignation as director of elections at this time constitutes a grave and unfortunate loss to the electoral system and to Jamaica," Thompson said yesterday.
He castigated the detractors of his former colleague, charging that they wanted to get rid of Walker because he was a no-nonsense person.
"There are those who want Mr Walker's head for a number of different reasons, not the least of which is the fact that Mr Walker is no pushover and and he cannot be trampled upon," he said.
Thompson told The Gleaner that Walker was a "man of principle" who stood firm as the commission sought to fix the electoral system."
He expressed the hope that the country would be able to find a replacement who would bring the same energy and determination to the position of director of elections.
Family decision
Asked why Walker did not denounce his United States citizen-ship and reapply for the job, Thompson said it might have been a decision he made in consultation with his family.
However, he hinted that Walker might have felt a stream of ingratitude for the invaluable contribution he made in helping to reform the electoral process.
"One has to look at the level of gratitude that one gets after one has given up oneself totally to the betterment of this country," he stressed.
The Gleaner was not able to reach Walker for comment yesterday.
Tom Tavares-Finson, Jamaica Labour Party-selected commissioner on the ECJ, said Walker's resig-nation did not come as a surprise.
"He has been a firm and extremely competent director of elections," Tavares-Finson said. "He has provided a remarkable service to his country and the Government of Jamaica is extremely grateful for the contribution he has made."
Call for review
Tavares-Finson said the provisions in the Electoral Commission Act, which disqualified Walker as director of elections, should be reviewed.
Donald Buchanan, one of the PNP's representatives on the ECJ, told The Gleaner last night that Walker contributed significantly to the reform of Jamaica's electoral system.
"He is a true professional and based on the conflict with his status and the law, he did the honourable thing," Buchanan said.
"Other people in Gordon House who find themselves in similar conflict with the law and who call themselves honourable should follow his example," Buchanan added.
In an election petition brought against Daryl Vaz by People's National Party (PNP) candidate for Western Portland, Abe Dabdoub, Walker's eligibility as director of elections was called into question.
Dabdoub's attorneys made a successful bid in the Supreme Court to get the JLP's Vaz ousted as Member of Parliament for West Portland.
The court ruled that Vaz, by virtue of his own act, had pledged allegiance or obedience to the United States and should be disqualified.
Section 3 of the Electoral Commission (Interim) Act stipulates that a person shall not be qualified to be a nominated commissioner or director of elections if he
"is, by virtue of his own act, under any acknowledgement of allegiance, obedience or adherence to a foreign power or state."
Bentolila said both the man and woman were airlifted to a Miami hospital, where the woman remains in stable condition.
Aventura Mall, which is home to more than 250 stores and a movie theater, is located about 20 miles north of Miami.

A Toronto actor known for his work on a popular beer commercial has pleaded guilty to child porn charges.
Robert Smith, the 42-year-old who played a crude Scotsman in an Alexander Keith's beer commercial, told a courtroom Monday he was not pressured into making the decision.
His plea comes after an attempt by his lawyer, Cindy Wasser, to have the charges thrown out on the basis that the search warrants were unconstitutional.
In their search, police retrieved information from Smith's Internet service provider. The Crown was able to successfully argue that Internet subscribers do not have an expectation of privacy when they sign up for file sharing networks.
Crown prosecutor Allison Dellandrea read from a statement of agreed facts in which Smith admitted to downloading and possessing child pornography.
His wife did not know about Smith's actions, the statement said.
Smith's next court appearance is scheduled for Monday when a sentencing date will be set.
He could be jailed for up to two years.

Bad Breath is an embarra**ing problem, many of us would have suffered from it at some point in our lives.Bad Breath is usually caused by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. Bad breath is not contagious, meaning you cannot catch it from someone else.
Chronic bad breath, known as Halitosis, does not come from the stomach. The only odor that comes from the stomach is when you burp. Food eaten such as garlic and spicy foods once absorbed into the body can release odor through the lungs when you breathe. Food odors are transitory and should not be confused with bad breath. Human's sense of smell has the ability to adjust to odor. Therefore, most people with halitosis are not aware of their bag breath.
Self Test For Bad Breath
Follow the 5 easy steps below and test your breath and find out do you have Bad Breath:
1). Lick the back of your hand. Let it dry for a few seconds and then smell. If you notice and odor, you have a breath disorder.
2.) Place dental floss between your back teeth and then smell the floss.
3). While looking at the mirror, grab the tip of your tongue with a Kleenex and pull it out as far you can. If you see that the very back of your tongue is whitish in color, it may be a sign that you have bad breath.
4). Ask the opinion of someone you can trust.
5). Check your breath several times daily because your breath changes throughout the day.
Professional use of a Halimeter will measures the concentration of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the mouth. If you want to prevent bad breath then start by practicing an oral hygiene of the mouth with cleaning, brushing and flossing. Oral hygiene helps to prevent the build-up of the bacteria that forms on your teeth, tongue and gums that causes bad breath.

A 62-year-old cyclist went into cardiac arrest while participating in the Five Boro Bike Tour Sunday but was stabilized by a fellow rider and FDNY rescuers who treated 44 patients during the event, officials said.
James Hamilton of Bethany, Conn., lost consciousness and was clinically dead after he fell from his bike while cruising with his wife on the upper level of the Queensboro Bridge about 9:50 a.m., authorities said.
Another cyclist quickly performed lifesaving CPR as onscene medics arrived, FDNY officials said.
Emergency Medical Service technicians Valerie Vera-Tudela and Beth Tichman used a defibrillator to revive Hamilton, who regained a pulse and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens in guarded condition, the FDNY said.
By the time he was transferred to Mount Sinai Medical Center in Manhattan, Hamilton was talking and breathing on his own, officials said.
A total of 44 people required medical attention during the 42-mile tour that attracted about 30,000 riders, said Deputy FDNY Chief Katherine Fuchs.
The injuries ranged "from bumps and bruises to [Hamilton], who was clinically dead," said Fuchs. "It's been a very busy, crazy day."
YANGON (Reuters) - A powerful cyclone that slammed into Myanmar's Irrawaddy delta triggered a massive wave that gave people nowhere to run, killing at least 15,000 and leaving 30,000 others missing, officials said on Tuesday.
"More deaths were caused by the tidal wave than the storm itself," Minister for Relief and Resettlement Maung Maung Swe told a news conference in the devastated former capital, Yangon, where food and water supplies are running low.
"The wave was up to 12 feet high and it swept away and inundated half the houses in low-lying villages," he said, giving the first detailed description of the weekend cyclone. "They did not have anywhere to flee."
It is the worst cyclone to hit Asia since 1991, when 143,000 people died in Bangladesh.
Information Minister Kyaw Hsan said the military were "doing their best," but analysts said there could be political fallout for military rulers of the former Burma who pride themselves on their ability to cope with any challenge.
"The myth they have projected about being well-prepared has been totally blown away," said political analyst Aung Naing Oo, who fled to Thailand after a brutally crushed 1988 uprising. "This could have a tremendous political impact in the long term."
Earlier, Foreign Minister Nyan Win said on state television that 10,000 people had died just in Bogalay, a town 90 km (50 miles) southwest of Yangon.
Reflecting the scale of the disaster, the ruling junta said it would postpone to May 24 a constitutional referendum in the worst-hit areas of Yangon and the sprawling Irrawaddy delta.
However, state TV said the May 10 vote on the charter, part of the army's much-criticized "roadmap to democracy," would proceed as planned in the rest of the southeast Asian nation, which has been under army rule for the last 46 years.
The military's political plans have been slammed by Western governments, especially after the army's *lo**y suppression of Buddhist-monk led protests last September.
SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND HOMELESS
The government also lifted states of emergency in three of the five states declared official disaster zones and some parts of the worst-hit Yangon and Irrawaddy regions.
The Information Minister said the government had sufficient stocks of rice despite damage to grain stored in the huge delta, known as the "rice bowl of Asia" 50 years ago when Burma was the world's largest rice exporter.
After a meeting with Myanmar's ambassador to Bangkok, Thai Foreign Minister Noppadol Pattama said he had been told 30,000 people were missing after Cyclone Nargis.
"The losses have been much greater than we anticipated," he said. Ambassador Ye Win declined to speak to reporters.
The total left homeless by the 190 km (120 miles) per hour winds and storm surge is in the several hundred thousands, United Nations aid officials say.
The disaster drew a rare acceptance of outside help from the diplomatically isolated generals, who spurned such approaches in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Bernard Delpuech, a European Union aid official in Yangon, said the junta had sent three ships carrying food to the delta region. Nearly half the country's 53 million people live in the five disaster-hit states.
Army-controlled media have made much of the military's response, showing footage of soldiers manhandling tree trunks or top generals climbing into helicopters or greeting homeless storm victims in Buddhist temples.
But with many people still furious at the September crackdown, there is an inevitable sense of the army failing to do enough.
"The regime has lost a golden opportunity to send the soldiers as soon as the storm stopped to win the heart and soul of people," one retired civil servant told a Reuters.
"But where are the soldiers and police? They were very quick and aggressive when there were protests in the streets last year," he said.
"MASSIVE, TERRIBLE"
Aid agency World Vision in Australia said it had been granted special visas to send in personnel to back up 600 staff in the impoverished Southeast Asian country.
"This is massive. It is not necessarily quite tsunami level, but in terms of impact of millions displaced, thousands dead, it is just terrible," World Vision Australia head Tim Costello said.
"Organizations like ours have been given permission, which is pretty unprecedented, to fly people in. This shows how grave it is in the Burmese government's mind," he said.
The town-by-town list of dead and missing announced by Nyan Win, a major-general, showed 14,859 deaths in the Irrawaddy area and 59 in and around Yangon, the country's biggest city.
Residents of the city of 5 million were queuing up for bottled water and there was still no electricity four days after the cyclone struck.
Prices of food, fuel and construction materials have skyrocketed, and most shops have sold out of candles and batteries. An egg costs three times what it did on Friday.
"Generators are selling very well under the generals," said one man waiting outside a shop.
A report that a man and a woman got stuck while having sex and had to be rushed to a popular hospital has been the talk on the lips of several persons at that medical facility.
The report said that the man's penis had to be cut off after the woman's vagina tightened around it and he was not able to get out.
Though employees confirmed hearing about the report, the hospital's administration say they have never heard of such a case.
Reports reaching THE STAR say that the man and the woman showed up to the hospital in an inseparable sexual position, similar to that of two canines that had got stuck during the mating process. It is understood that the woman had to be injected with muscle relaxant by medical staff to release her severe grip on the man. By this time, however, it was too late as oxygen and *lo** had stopped circulating in the man's member for too long, hence it had to be cut off.
When The Star visited the hospital, there were only a few staff members who admitted that they too have heard the incident and were questioning if the argument was just a rumour.
"Well, I hear bout it but mi nuh really know if a true," said one porter who was on duty. "I jus hear the argument wha day when mi come back a work, yuh see me? But I don't know who it happen to or when, nothing like that. I just hear that a man and a woman come up yah hitch."
A staff member from the Accident and Emergency Unit said he, too, heard of the incident, but like his co-worker could not say if it was true.
While he, too, has never heard about the case at the hospital, Dr Alverston Bailey, medical doctor and immediate past president of the Medical Association of Jamaica (MAJ), said it was theoretically possible for a man and a woman to get 'stuck' in such a compromising position.
"It's a disorder we learnt about in medical school but I have never seen any cases of it. It's called coitus captivus, where the woman's vaginal muscle spasm during intercourse and traps the man," he said. "This would be a very unpleasant experience for the man as the lady's severe grip would be quite painful, locking off *lo** circulation and oxygen to the man's penis. So, in other words, it would be as if the penis was being strangled."
Dr Bailey said that when this happens medical attention would have to be sought immediately, in the event that the woman was not able to calm herself and relax her muscles as the longer the wait, the more severe the pain would get.Scientists finally get a chance to examine the immense, mysterious creature hauled ashore a year ago.
It sounds like something out of a bad monster movie: a team of scientists busily examines the thawing carcass of a 900-pound colossal squid. They've kept it frozen for more than a year inside a walk-in freezer ever since a commercial fishing crew hauled it up from the chilly depths of the Antarctic last January, half dead and clinging to a giant toothfish, and it now sits floating in a massive temperature-controlled tank filled with an icy saline solution just above freezing. The scientists, some in white coats and waders, others in scuba gear, have only four hours to study the 30-foot-long specimen before its rubbery, pink tissue begins to decompose and they have to inject it and fill the tank with formaldehyde. Until then, they rush to perform a battery of tests, studying the suckers and hooks on in its tentacles, measuring its sharp, birdlike beak, examining the contents of its stomach, collecting tissue samples for DNA analysis, trying to determine its sex, its age. All the while, the creature's eyes, which are the size of dinner plates and thought to be the largest in the animal kingdom, stare lifelessly ahead. Surrounding the chaos, is a cable-TV camera crew, recording the details of this rare autopsy for a documentary.
This will be the scene Wednesday at a facility outside Wellington, New Zealand, where for the last year, marine scientists and staff of the Museum of New Zealand have been trying to figure out just how to defrost and examine the largest known specimen of colossal squid without damaging it. If everything goes accordingly, the squid will end up on display at the museum later this year, encased in a big Plexiglas tank andideallyfully intact. "It sounds simple, just defrost a big lump of dead squid, right? But so much can go wrong," says Steve O'Shea, director of the Earth and Oceanic Sciences Research Institute at the Auckland University of Technology, and one of the world's foremost squid experts. He and his colleagues have spent the better part of the last year pondering the challenge of defrosting the half-ton specimen, which remains tangled in sea netting and stuffed into a large plastic bin, smushed like an accordion. The problem with defrosting something so large is that at room temperature, by the time its insides have thawed, the outer flesh will have already begun to rot. At one point, they considered using an industrial-size microwave, but figured it was too risky. "I know it can be done," says O'Shea. "But it wouldn't have looked good if we boiled the thing."
Last fall, they decided that the safest way was to submerge the carcass in a tank of icy saltwater and have it slowly thaw over the course of a couple days. But even that isn't foolproof. Two weeks ago, O'Shea and his Auckland University colleague Kat Bolstad, along with the museum's national environment director Dr. Carol Diebel, decided to try a test run with a chunk of ice about the size of the frozen squid and submerge it into the tank to see how it would react. The ice ended up cracking after only a few minutes, so they lowered the temperature and extended the expected time of defrosting to about four days. "We've had to constantly rethink this," says O'Shea. "We can't afford to get complacent now." The biggest challenge, he says, is controlling the temperature in the defrosting tank, which will have water circulating through it, but also do it in a way that, considering the public fascination, has some entertainment value. "There's nothing worse to look at than a big block of frozen squid," jokes O'Shea. The entire process will be broadcast on the museum's Web site and also filmed by the Discovery Channel for a documentary to be released in the fall. "This is science as theater," says Diebel. "It's like when they uncovered that woolly mammoth a few years ago. You want to document and record it because of the level of interest, but also you have to take every precaution because once this process is started, there's really no stopping it."
On Sunday, a forklift slowly removed the squid from the freezer and eased it into the slurry-filled tank. For the next two days, O'Shea and his team will monitor the thawing process, attempting to remove the netting and allow the squid to expand to its normal size, thought to be about 30 feet. Once its completely thawed, the race against the clock begins. "If it starts to smell, then we'll know we don't have a lot of time," says Diebel.
One of the first things that O'Shea hopes to do is to measure the creature's beak. The largest one on record, which was removed from the stomach of a sperm whale, is 49mm. "If this one is less than that, I'll be able to turn around and say guess what? They get bigger than this," says O'Shea, who will also try to quickly determine the sex of the squid. If it's a male, that would also indicate that there are bigger colossal squids out there, as females tend to be larger. "I'd love it to be a male," O'Shea says.
Once measurements are taken, construction on the Plexiglas display case will begin, while the squid sits in formaldehyde for the next several weeks, possibly shrinking to a third of its full size. It will then have to be transported a few miles away to the museum, likely put on the bed of a truck and driven carefully through "very narrow, winding roads," says O'Shea. The museum is still working out the logistics of how to fit the giant display case into its gallerywhich might take a bit of remodeling; O'Shea speculates that they might have to dismantle the side of the building and load it in with heavy-duty cranes. There are also safety issues at stake. The display case will be filed with glycol, a colorless, odorless syrupy liquid that is both toxic and flammable. Any break in the display case would spell a major disaster.
If dealing with a dead squid is exciting, imagine the thrill of encountering a live one in its own habitat. O'Shea believes this is possible: just two years ago, a team of Japanese researchers shot the first footage of a live giant squid in waters of the coast of Tokyo. "I don't think it's going to be difficult at all for the first person to raise the money it'll take to put some cameras down there and lure one in. They're such an aggressive creature, all you'd have to do is stick a dead cow on the end of the hook. It's the T. rex of the ocean."
At the end its only gonna be Tony Yayo and 50, Banks gon go too man, Im tellin you its only a certain amount of time man that you can just f*ck n*ggas in they as* man and you cant thats me man I saw the rubber comin I jetted, Im out n*gga.

A toddler was among at least nine persons killed on a *lo**y weekend across Jamaica, with most of the violence centred in Kingston hot spots.
A shoot-out between the warring Africa Gardens and Jungle 12 factions in August Town yesterday afternoon left a toddler and another man dead, while two other persons are nursing bullet wounds in hospital.
Dead are 15-month-old Regina Williams and 23-year-old Narda Brooks, both of August Town addresses. Those injured were a 24-year-old male and a 41-year-old female.
The police reported that yesterday rival gangs fired at each other in the community, forcing residents and passers-by to scamper for cover. In the aftermath, the toddler and Brooks were found suffering from gunshot wounds.
Bayshore Park, also in Kingston, was rocked by a double murder on Saturday night. According to police, residents heard explosions about 10:30 p.m. On the arrival of the police, the bodies of two unidentified men were found on a roadway in the community.PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
Members of the Anti-Kid-napping Squad, the Special Anti-Crime Unit of Trinidad and Tobago and the Inter-Agency Task Force were searching yesterday for a businesswoman who became this country's latest abduction victim.
Phillipa Talma, 45, the daughter of University of the West Indies professor and former independent senator Julian Kenny, was abducted outside her business place in the upscale Maraval community north of the capital last Friday evening.
Police said the abduction took place in full view of security guards and members of the general public, and eyewitnesses reported that Talma kicked and screamed as she was being taken.
Professor Kenny, who is an environmental expert, has so far refused to comment on the incident.
The vehicle used in the abduction was later found abandoned in the Maraval area. Police said that it had been reported stolen a few days earlier.
President of the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association Gregory Aboud said that kid-napping was "one of the most terrifying crimes" that has been "haunting our country over the past several years.
"I am not sure that the national community and particularly the business community can withstand the terror of another bout of kid-nappings in Trinidad and Tobago.
"Nothing affected our international reputation more negatively than kidnapping. No amount of financial prosperity or economic activity can save our country from damnation if kidnappings begin again," Aboud added.
Firemen try to open the door of the Freightliner trailer which ran off the Long Bay main road in St James on Sunday morning. The driver of the vehicle, Glen Francis, was killed. - photo by janet silvera
WESTERN BUREAU:
It took firefighters more than six hours to pry the body of 44-year-old trailer driver Glen Francis from the 30-ton Freightliner truck along the Long Bay main road in St James yesterday morning.
Francis a father of two, is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel before dawn, running off the newly constructed highway into a ditch. The vehicle then overturned.
A passenger, reportedly his neighbour, escaped unscratched.
"We responded to the call very early, but our equipment was too light to lift the cab from the trench," deputy superintendent of the Montego Bay Fire Department, Lloyd Scott, told The Gleaner.
He said when his team arrived at the scene, the truck was in the trench under 20 inches of water.
Heavy-duty help
Trapped in the vehicle for hours, it was at 10:30 a.m. that Pihl, the construction company building the North Coast Highway, assisted the firemen with a 45-ton heavy-duty crane, which was used to lift parts of the trailer, allowing the rescue team to use its Jaws of Life equipment to expand the cab to remove the body.
"We had to cut the doors and the steering column to release his feet (Francis') which were tied around the gas pedal area," stated Scott.
Police reports are that at 4:45 a.m., Francis was driving a truck laden with bulk cement towards Montego Bay. On reaching a section of the roadway, he reportedly lost control of the truck which overturned, pinning him beneath. Francis sustained multiple injuries to which he succumbed.
Not speeding
André Bennett, who claimed to have witnessed the accident, said the trucker was not speeding.
"It was probably going medium speed when it passed me. Shortly after, it pulled off the road and dropped into the ditch and I heard a thunderous splash."
Bennett added: "The driver's hand was moving when I arrived there."
He said attempts by a tractor driver to rescue Francis also failed.
Francis lived with his wife, Marcia, and children in Kingston.
QUEENS
* A man with some pretty deep pockets was arrested Thursday for trespass at a housing development.
Marty Downs, 52, of Briarwood, was stopped and questioned by cops after he was found trespassing at the Queensbridge Houses on Vernon Boulevard near 40th Avenue in Long Island City shortly before 7 p.m.

Popular party promoter, Roderick Reid, is now behind bars after he was accused of molesting a boy he was supervising.
Reid, known for promoting parties such as Yesterday and Mello Vibes, was arrested and charged on Tuesday by detectives from the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA) in Kingston.
He is booked to appear in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
Head of CISOCA, Deputy Superintendent Herfa Beckford, confirmed to THE STAR that Reid is now being held at the Half-Way Tree lock-up and is facing charges of indecent assault, gross indecency and adminis-tering alcohol with intent to commit an indictable offence.
Reports are that the com-plainant was assaulted some time in 2007, after which a report was made. The promoter was sub-sequently arrested.
Further reports are that Reid, who was a probation officer at the time of the alleged incident, was suspended from duty pending the outcome of the investigations.
He has tendered his resignation since then, the CISOCA confirmed.
Speaking about her zero-tolerance approach to sexually related offences, DSP Beckford said, "No one is excluded from being arrested, providing that a report is made and proper investigations are done."With recent hype from celebrity print and online magazines about his weight loss, its safe to assume that 50 Cent is both quite busy, and likely preparing for another film role. Weve got this record, then I go on tour, started 50. While Im touring, Ive still got to use that time to condition myself properly for a role I play in a film. When I get back, Ive got one day off, I go on the movie set. While Im on the movie set, I have a trailer coming for me to actually record.
The Queens-born superstar touched on the value of multi-tasking, Its always more than one thing that I actually have to focus on at a time. At the end of the end, it gets really hectic, because [its a launch] for the majority of things that were working on start to come out in the fourth quarter. Thats when people start acquiring things. The video game, Bulletproof, will be out around Christmas. The movie Righteous Kill with Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro will be out in the fourth quarter.
With the fourth quarter, said to now include what many question to be 50 Cents final album with Interscope, the star said that he will begin the huge Vitamin Water campaign. Carrie Underwood, and multiple professional athletes [are] involved, he said, after pictures from the photo shoot appeared in Star magazine. Ive also got a body spray, Pure 50, by Right Guard. Ive got a regular fragrance. Ive got the Magic Stick condom, powered by Lifestyle. 50 Cent will thus join Lil Wayne in backing a contraceptive.
The recording is said to be for Before I Self-Destruct, a worthwhile name for the restless superstar.
