A three-year-old girl lay dead in the squalid bedroom of a pub for up to two days while abandoned by her mother and stepfather.
Tiffany Hirst was locked "unloved, unwanted and alone" in her beetle-infested room at the Scarborough Arms which the pair ran in Upperthorpe, Sheffield.
Passers-by recall seeing her face staring through the window in what may have been a please for help, according to senior detectives.
Paramedics found her body covered in insect bites in filthy bed and she died of pneumonia due to repeated and severe malnourishment.
Her mother Sabrina Hirst, 22, pleaded guilty to her manslaughter and stepfather Robert Hirst, 54, to neglect at Sheffield Crown Court this week (wed). Both were remanded in custody to await sentence later this month.
A Serious Case Review has been launched by Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board into Tiffany's death and the neglect of another child - aged 12 months -which the couple have also admitted.
Det Chf Ins Steve Williams, who led the police investigation, said: "We think this neglect had been going on for months and that those last few months, weeks and days of her life she was unloved, unwanted, starved of attention and left alone to die and she would have known that.
"Children are a gift who should be cherished; parents everywhere, those who have lost them and people unable to have them will find this treatment unbearable and unthinkable.
"We have heard that Tiffany would be seen staring out of her bedroom window and this was probably the little girl's cry for help but nobody realised - it is heartbreaking."
He said officers who dealt with the death had been left traumatised by what they saw.
Mr Williams added: "She was like a tiny porcelain doll, so tiny and frail and we all wondered how this had been allowed to happen in this day and age.
"This must never happen again and if people have any concerns at all or suspicions about the welfare of a child they must call somebody because out of every thousand calls followed up if only one turns out to be founded and a child's life is saved it is worth it."
A post mortem examination found development of Tiffany's bones had been abnormal, indicating malnourishment and growth happening in bursts when she had been fed.
The court heard that the living quarters at the Scarbrough Arms were "filthy and dangerous" and that over 13 months before Tiffany's death, the Hirsts were "in a habit of leaving children locked up there.
Police found live electrical wires hanging from the walls and one room where the family dogs were kept was full of excrement and urine and the stench unbearable.
Judge Alan Goldsack QC said that Sabrina Hirst had never been able to answer a single question as to how this child could die in her care.
Friends and relatives of Sabrina Hirst gave detectives the impression Tiffany had been loved as a baby and toddler, but this changed when Robert Hirst came into their lives.
They stopped taking her to nursery to mix with other children and she was denied even the most basic level of care, including not being provided with food and water.
She was so undernourished and dehydrated when emergency services found her she weighed less than an average child a year younger than she was.
Before her death last September she was seen "clean and well-dressed and with a healthy appetite" and on her last inspection by a health visitor in February 2007, Tiffany "appeared healthy and well".

A cross and angry Rodney 'Bounty Killer' Price spoke out for the first time about his recent European tour that saw three shows being cancelled ,allegedly because of gay activist groups.
It was reported that gay human rights groups had coordinated a European-wide campaign to halt Bounty's Deadly Alliance tour of the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Italy, England and Switzerland, and were successful in stopping concerts in Bradford and Birmingham, England, and another in Essen, Germany.
Successful tour
However, Bounty Killer in an exclusive interview with THE STAR says on the contrary, his European tour was very much a success and that gay activist groups were only exaggerating that they were successful in stopping a number of the shows.
"It was a successful tour in terms of meeting and greeting and connecting with the people. The tour lasted for four weeks, we did a week in London and then three weeks in Europe. They (gay activists) cancelled like three concerts out of 21, so all yuh hear dem a talk bout gay dis and gay dat, they were just exaggerating, they always try to exaggerate bout they cancel show," Bounty said.
A violence thing
He continued, "Di show in Birmingham, it was a violence thing that was going on in Birmingham in the black community and they (promoters) were feeling like it was very dangerous to try and get Bounty and Mavado in dis place at this moment, it wasn't any gay-bashing thing because if that was the case, we couldn't go in London."
"London is the heart of it, yuh understand, so if it was a gay problem, why Birmingham would have a problem and London don't have a problem? London show is the biggest one and that's the most successful one, dat's di one they would have tried to stop, not the little one down Birmingham. So it was just a violence thing in Birmingham and they came 'bout it's a gay thing. Even di concert wey dem claim dem cancel a Germany, a Munich, dem cancel di show inna di day an wi have to guh to court di afternoon and won," Bounty said.
So despite these minor setbacks, Bounty says, "the tour went well, but most people never want to see it a success, but it was a success ... yea because they expect that we were going to get turn back like Sizzla an all these things, they try but it jus neva work."
Artistes Need To Unite
Bounty says he is also calling on dancehall artistes to "be more unified in the fight against gays, ca' if wi nuh unite, wi will neva win dis battle."
"The artistes, they are not for the music, they are for the success, and the wealth and all this excitement and super stardom. Ca' for instance, if there wasn't a Bounty, a Beenie, a Buju, a Ele, a Capleton, a Sizzla an it was jus a Kartel an a Mavado, where di music would be? Or if it was jus a Bounty an a Beenie an no Mavado an no Kartel an no Buju an Capleton, wey di music woulda be?"
"When these artistes see other artistes going through problems like what happening to Sizzla now, yuh know nuff a dem a laugh, like ... Beenie, mi know him a laugh. 'Cause .... sey dem ban Bounty an Mavado an dem call him (Beenie) fi do di show an him run gone pon it. How you mus ban my fellow Jamaican an den you guh bond wid dem?" Bounty questioned.
According to Bounty, some of these artistes are not concerned about their culture,"these artistes nuh care if yuh nuh love Jamaica ... 'cause dem only a do dis fi come model pon Killa, dem jus waan have more money dan Bounty Killa, dem nuh business if Jamaica sink tomorrow."
(Bounty will be celebrating his birthday this Sunday at It's Tha Pool Party at Norbury Drive in Norbrook)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A recent encounter with two pit bulls left a Tallyrand woman with several cuts and bruises and left her pet Chihuahua dead.Ana Morales-Wagner said she and her Chihuahua named Rusty were walking at the intersection of East 11th and Danese streets on Tuesday morning when her neighbor's two pit bulls slipped under a fence and attacked."It came over and bit my hand -- got my neck, bit my finger and I was dragging," Morales-Wagner said. "One of them came charging and attacked my dog. I tried getting him off, hitting him with a stick."
She said from that point on, it was a struggle."I tried to get him off -- screaming, 'Get your dog. Get your dog.' I tried to hit him with a stick, but that didn't do nothing," said Morales-Wagner.She told Channel 4 that as she was trying to fight off the dog, a good Samaritan drove up, got out of his car and began to help her. However, as the good Samaritan was calling 911, the second pit bull approached."The black-and-white dog came out and started to chew my dog where the other one was," Morales-Wagner said.Rusty did not survive the attack.Larry Platts owns the dogs police said came after Morales-Wagner and Rusty.Platts said before Tuesday his pet had never escaped the fence."I do send my deepest regrets. I've been around to see the victim. I hope she does better, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to help the situation out," Platts said.In the end, Morales-Wagner said she has no hard feelings against the dog's owner, but she said she doesn't want anyone else to experience her pain and injuries or her loss.Platts said he has offered to pay for the victim's medical expenses and for her to get a new Chihuahua. Both of the pit bulls involved have been taken by Animal Control. The city said the dogs will remain quarantined for at least 10 days pending an investigation.
Reggae Sumfest principal, Johnny Gouzong is confident that despite the present hardship and difficulty facing the society, the show, now in its 16th year will be a success.
This years festival will be staged despite the fact that the public is at odds with the authorities regarding the Noise Abatement Act.
This act allows the police to shutdown local dances at 2 p.m on weekends and at 12 a.m during the week. This has led to several local promoters losing several thousand dollars. The situation recently turned ugly when residents demonstrated viciously after police officers shutdown a popular session.
Some dancehall supporters vowed to boycott the larger events, suggesting that shows such as Reggae Sumfest and others are the big man events.
In responding to the alleged notion the veteran promoter said that Reggae Sumfest has been designated a national event, and as such the show will be granted an extension on the 2 a.m. cut off time. So we expect to do business as usual, Gouzong said.
With regards to a boycott, I am confident that they will be very happy to hear that we will not be closing at 2 a.m, he said. The nature and flavour of the festival from Reggae Sunsplash in 1978 to now, is one where people enjoy themselves right through the night, have a little breakfast in the morning and then go home.
Jamaicans like to go out and enjoy themselves and that is part of the release valve so we expect that the festival will once again be very well supported, a seemingly confident Gouzong told the Western Mirror last Friday at the second meeting of the National Cruise Council of Jamaica meeting held at the Yacht Club..
The entry fees for this years show Gourzong said will more or less be the same. If there is any increase it will be minimal because we recognize that patrons are going through difficult times.
Gourzong admits that there are other challenges. This year is a challenge based on many reasons. Red Stripe is no longer our title sponsor, although they are still on board as our exclusive alcohol beverage sponsor.
Despite the obvious, Gouzong is very confident that the four-night festival which begins on July 13 will be a success.
He is expecting a fantastic festival this year with great artistes. Two international artistes will be among the line-up this year, but due to final negotiations, he will not disclose the name of that that artistes as yet.
The home coming of Jah Cure will highlight the local acts plus the smooth Beres Hammond, Taurus Riley, Etana, Queen Ifrica, Beenie Man, Bounty Killa, Mavado, Vybz Kartel, Elephant Man among others.

The disgraced former NBA referee told authorities in a four-page letter released Tuesday that two officials conspired to fix the outcome of a 2002 playoff series and influenced several other post- and regular-season games.
The fix is in?
Tim Donaghy did not mention which series in 2002 was fixed, but the Lakers-Kings Western Conference finals was the only series that fits his allegations. A statistical look at Game 6:

Court documents filed by Donaghy's lawyer detailed the "inner-workings" of a plot in which top league executives used referees to manipulate the games. Donaghy claims two referees were "company men" whose job was to extend a playoff series in 2002 to a seventh game.
The documents did not name the series, but the Lakers-Kings Western Conference finals was the only series in 2002 that went to a seventh game, with the Lakers winning both Game 6 and 7 to reach the NBA Finals.
"Personal fouls (resulting in obviously injured players) were ignored even when they occurred in full view of the referees," the document says of the unnamed series. "Conversely, the referees called made-up fouls on Team 5 in order to give additional free throw opportunities to Team 6."
Two players from Team 5 fouled out in the game, the document said, and the "referees' favoring of Team 6 led to that team's victory that night." Team 6 also went on to win Game 7 of the series, according to the document.
NBA commissioner David Stern flatly denied the allegations Tuesday, dismissing Donaghy's allegations as a despearte attempt to ease his sentence.
"My reaction to Donaghy's lawyer is that clearly as the date of sentencing gets closer and the things he's thrown against the wall haven't stuck, he's rehashing a variety of things that have been given to the FBI, have been investigated and are baseless," Stern told reporters.
"He's a singing, cooperating witness trying to get as light a sentence as he can."
The Lakers trailed the Kings three games to two in 2002 when Los Angeles rallied to win each of the final two games and eventually went on win the NBA championship. Key Kings big men Vlade Divac and Scot Pollard both fouled out in Game 6.
Shaquille O'Neal scored 41 points and pulled down 17 rebounds against the Kings in Game 6, and drew most of the fouls that sent Divac and Pollard out of the game.
"Our big guys get 20 fouls tonight and Shaq gets four? You tell me how the game went," Kings coach Rick Adelman said after the game, according to SportsTicker. "It's just the way it is. Obviously, they got the game called the way they wanted to get it called."
"I knew before the game I'd be out of it," Divac added. "(O'Neal) went out (on fouls) up there (in Sacramento). It had to be the same down here."
Lakers coach Phil Jackson, speaking with reporters before Tuesday's Game 3 of the NBA Finals, stressed the need to wait for proof before any judgments are made, but was not shy to offer a low opinion of the officiating in the 2002 series.
"Was that after the fifth game, after we had the game stolen away from us on a bad call?" he said, referring to a game-changing play by Kings guard Mike Bibby in the final moments.
The letter doesn't name anyone involved. Donaghy's attorney and prosecutors have declined to comment. The league has denied the scandal goes beyond Donaghy and two co-defendants.
Donaghy also claims that a 2005 playoff series was improperly influenced, saying that referees were instructed to call illegal screens more strictly on a particular player after an opposing owner called to complain after falling behind 2-0 in the series.
Though the document again does not name anyone specifically, Mark Cuban did complain to the league that year about the officiating after his Mavericks fell behind 2-0 in their series with Houston. Dallas went on to beat the Rockets in seven games.
Then-Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy claimed at the time that an official who was not working the playoffs informed him of the plan.
"I didn't think that really worked in the NBA, but in this case it has," Van Gundy told reporters after the fourth game of the series, according to USA Today. He was later fined $100,000, a record sum for a coach.
The document also described other alleged infractions, including league officials telling referees that they should withhold calling technical fouls on certain star players because doing so hurt ticket sales and television ratings."
Donaghy also said refs broke league rules by routinely fraternizing with players, coaches and team management and that the resulting inappropriate relationships may have influenced the outcomes of games. He claims one general manager in 2004 made a game-day phone call to referees to encourage them to call more personal fouls against an opponent.
Donaghy claims referees have accepted autographs, merchandise and meals from team representatives. He said one official used a team's facility to exercise and another played tennis with an NBA coach.
The veteran referee pleaded guilty last year to felony charges alleging he took cash payoffs from gamblers and bet on games. He faces up to 33 months in prison.

A COUPLE were yesterday charged with conspiracy to supply drugs to Amy Winehouse following a sensational video obtained by The Sun.
The Back to Black star, 24, is seen smoking crack on the film, but escaped charges as there was no proof of what types of substance were abused.
But the CPS believes there is enough evidence on the clip to charge 34-year-old John Blagrove and his girlfriend Cara Burton, 22.
The pair, of Dalston, East London, were bailed to appear before Thames JPs in July, charged with supplying cocaine and ecstasy earlier this year.
As well as smoking crack, Winehouse was shown apparently snorting MDMA powdered ecstasy and cocaine and admitting taking Valium tablets.
Despite a lack of evidence to charge her, the conspiracy law Blagrove and Burton face does not require proof on what the substances in the film are.
The video also contained images of Sir Bob Geldofs 19-year-old daughter Peaches apparently handing over Ł190 for drugs and saying: "Im going to need Valium after this."
It is believed the charges against Blagrove and Burton do not relate to her
THERES no doubt breast-feeding is best - it reduces the risk of tummy upsets, allergies, obesity and a host of health problems in later life.
But mum Stella Onions believes her kids cant get enough of a good thing.
So five-year-old Josephine and her four-year-old brother Zac, are STILL being breastfed.
And Stella has no plans to wean them off Mummy milk in the near future.
Stella, 45, from Ludlow, Shropshire, says: Nature sorts it out for you.
When children lose their milk teeth, at between five and eight years, their jaw shape changes slightly and they lose the ability to suckle.
But she adds: Dont worry, theyre not going to be breast-feeding teenagers.
Stella doesnt care what their school friends might say she avoids that by teaching them at home.
She says hubby Andy, 45, a computer games designer has no problems with her decision.
And she is convinced there are many other mums who secretly breast-feed older children.
Official advice is that children should have nothing but breastmilk for the first six months of life.
But only one in three babies in the UK is exclusively breastfed at one week. Only one in five is still being breastfed at six weeks and only one in thirty is exclusively breastfed at five months.
June 12, 2008. NEW YORK (Reuters) - A battle has broken out among Live Nation Inc's top executives over the concert-promotion company's strategy to reshape the music industry by making big, expensive deals with artists, the Wall Street Journal reported on its Web site on Wednesday.
Live Nation Chief Executive Michael Rapino has tried to slow the pace of multimillion-dollar deals with artists, while Chairman Michael Cohl wants to accelerate it by striking deals with as many as 15 more artists, the Journal reported.
Live Nation struck a $120 million deal with Madonna and a $150 million deal with Jay-Z, the paper reported. It has held talks for a similar deal with South American pop star Shakira, according to several people involved, though no agreement has been reached, the Journal said.
The disagreement between the two executives in recent weeks resulted in Cohl threatening to leave Live Nation, and the board at one point was prepared to intervene, the Journal reported.
The executives are speaking again and Cohl has changed his mind about leaving, the Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
A Live Nation spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
Music companies are trying to sign up artists to such "360-degree" deals which can include recording, publishing, touring, digital and other rights. The deals are all-encompassing as a way for music companies to try to make money even as their traditional business of selling music is undercut by free, and often pirated, music on the Internet.
A 12-year global contract signed earlier this year with Irish rock band U2 includes merchandising and licensing rights, sponsorship and strategic alliances, digital rights, fan clubs and Web sites and other marketing and creative services

The promoters have had to tighten up on their lock-off time due to the recent clampdown by the police.
I should like to point out I have no personal feelings against anybody, Mr Edward Seaga included. As a Jamaican and brought up as one, I cannot readily accept that I have nothing to say or worst still my opinions must be formed by someone else's thought-process. Nor do I have any fear whatsoever of anybody who expresses other opinions which may even be the complete opposite of my own. My sole interest is to look into the main causes of the current extraordinary level crime induced social problems facing Jamaican society today without fear or favour.
In todays party-dominated societies including Jamaica, there is an unjustified overbearing pressure to go along with the views of this or that party even when great wrongs are being committed by those parties. There is an overbearing and unjustified pressure on the "small man" or "woman" to grin and bear it and opt for the party of the "lesser evil" and so on. Who ordained such approaches? Who are these individuals who says a person "must" support this or that party? Or vote for this or that Party? Everyone should think for themselves and reject this obscurantist and feudal approach, especially in this 21 Century where our very home, planet earth itself is facing a possible catastrophic environmental future not to mention man-made social and biological disasters.
Jamaica is a piece of land populated by humans of the same genetic structure as anywhere else. And like human beings everywhere else individually and collectively we are duty bound to fulfill our role as the most advanced biological species. And that role is to do our best as individuals and as a nation, scattered as we are around the world, to fight for the progress of our people as the most important contribution to the massive human pool of people everywhere fighting for general progress of all.
As such, it it very wrong to permit a very small handful of people to decide amongst themselves behind closed doors, every important decision in the life of the country, whether those decisions are bad or good. In ancient times this was inevitable. But not today and especially when decisions are adversely felt by the majority. Humans have the unique quality over other biological organisms to THINK and solve the most complex problems. Like everywhere else Jamaica has its own problems and its up to Jamaicans to think and work out how to solve them.
This writing on former PM Edward Seaga, was prompted by the thought of a friend from Grenada asked me why did Jamaica send troops to help the Americans invade their country in October 1983? Fair question. Edward Seaga was the PM of Jamaica at the time and has been part of the problem that our country has been facing since Independence. These people calling themselves leaders should not be permitted to do as they please and then stand on a rostrum and expect uncritical acclaim. If we Jamaicans do that then we have learned nothing from the 20th Century. We are not biologically programmed insects, like "worker bees" here to serve the "queen" and thats it. No we are human beings here to solve problems to improve our individual and collective short lives.
HISTORY October 25, 1983 was the day of the American armed assault on Grenada. Grenada, is an even smaller and poorer Caribbean country than Jamaica. The invaders killed hundreds claiming they went in to "rescue" American students. The Jamaican Prime Minister at the time, Edward Seaga, a close friend of the US President Ronald Reagan, sent in Jamaican troops "to help" his American compatriot. Only a couple of other Caribbean countries followed Seagas example. This shadowy figure still continues to have certain elements in Jamaica under his mythical spell. So, just who is Edward Seaga?

THE mediazoneja was told that during the funeral, while it was raining lightly, a bolt of lightning struck and five people were hit.
One resident of the community, who was on her way to the church, told THE mediazoneja
She said one woman's dress was burnt but she was not injured, and another reportedly received two injections at the hospital.
Another resident, who was at the funeral, told THE mediazoneja what she witnessed. "We were there at the funeral and about 2:30 or some time like dat, the rain was barely falling and out of the blue, lightning struck. It was terrible. It was horrible. People were lying on their backs and some people's clothes were burnt. It hit me hard on my hand too. It was my worst experience with something like that. I don't know how to explain it to you. I wouldn't want to experience anything like that again."
She said about six people were taken to hospital and told THE mediazoneja about one woman who reportedly had metal in her arm because it had been broken. She said this woman was hit very hard and now will have to visit the hospital to get an X-ray done.
The funeral reportedly continued, but since the incident, which damaged the electrical wires, the church has been without power.
DeKalb County Sheriff's Office booking photo of Cindi Cook
ATLANTA -- A Hall County mother was sentenced to a year in jail after taking desperate measures to keep her son's teenage girlfriend from having his baby.Officials said Cindi Cook, 44, found the Northside Women's Clinic for a 16-year-old girl. Cook paid for the abortion and signed a parental notification form saying she was the girl's mother."This is reprehensible conduct and it will not be tolerated," said DeKalb County Solicitor General Robert James.
James told WSB-TV that he had never seen a case like the one involving Cook."It's terrible when one parent takes another parent's child to have an abortion," said James.Cook is serving a year in jail for pretending to be the mother of her son's 16-year-old girlfriend and for illegally signing for her to have an abortion. The girl's parents knew nothing about the procedure and are incensed at Cook and the clinic.Their attorney, S. Fenn Little, read a statement they prepared that said, "The actions of both Cindi Cook and the Northside Women's Clinic have affected our daughter with much pain."Testimony indicated Cook pressured the girl to have the abortion."Because it was going to interfere with his college plans," said Little.Officials said the teen then found a clinic that would perform the procedure without a parent present, which violates state law according to the solicitor general. The clinic told WSB it had no comment.James said they are still looking into possibly charging the clinic and the girl's family said they are considering legal action against the clinic as well.Cook was found guilty of interfering with custody and violating the parental notification law. She remains in the DeKalb County Jail.

BEST FATHERS DAY SONGS OUT THERE As Fathers Day approaches, we here at one876 have been seeking to find the best Fathers Day songs. Right now, mi hear a couple of songs about parents that I have to big up. First one up is Ras Oneillys Only Jah Jah Know, a gem of a song that speaks to the emotional torment of the abandoned child. G Maffiahs Gone on the Kingston 6 Rekords label, is a powerful song on a hauntingly beautiful riddim and Jubilant has one called Mr. Worthless on the Natural Breeze riddim put out on producer Prekehs Open Ear music label. I have been troubled for quite a while. The problem, my girlfriend, is a sexaholic. Sometimes she wants it five times for one night. This is very taxing on my body as I work very hard and cannot keep up. The other thing is, she barks like a dog when she climaxes. This scares me and I have become afraid of her. She is very pretty and I don't want to lose her.
Pastor, is there any pill she could take to curb her sex drive? What can be done about the barking? Please, help me.
I don't know about the barking. I do know some women make lots of noise when they climax. A man told me that his woman has embarra**ed him on a number of occasions when she climaxed. In fact, at the apartment where they live, neighbours often knock on their door and beg them to take it easy because the noise is disturbing them. Some men try to push rags into the mouths of their women to prevent them from making loud noises.
Some men make lots of noise too when they are about to ejaculate. A lady once told me that she had to end the relationship with a man because of the tremendous noise he made. Some talk all sorts of nonsense, when they are in ecstasy, but I have never heard anyone barking like a dog. It must be scary, indeed.
I doubt very much that this woman can be described as a sexaholic. To some people, it is normal to have sex two, three or four times in one night. Indeed, some men brag that they have been able to satisfy their wives' needs by having sex with them two or three times per night.
Your woman is requiring much from you, but you are shocked and sorry for yourself because you have not been able to keep up. I suggest you discuss the matter with your woman and if you both agree she needs help, you may contact Sexaholic Anonymous at www.sa.org/ sexaholic.php.
I met a girl a few months ago and she is now my girlfriend. I am 25 and she is 23. She is of the Islamic faith. She says she wants me to be converted to that faith if we decide to get married.
I have already stated that I do not wish to convert as I am a strong believer in Christ as our Saviour and not as a prophet as they believe. I really have strong feelings for this young woman.
Right now, it's firm that I don't want to join her faith, but I may want to tie the knot sometime in the future. I know we can have an inter-faith marriage and I have no problem with that.
I think her parents may have something to do with wanting me to convert.
Pastor, what should I do?
P.B.
Dear P.B.,
The relationship will not work if the lady insists that you become a Muslim. So, it is up to you.
The Broadcasting Commission is investigating complaints of disruptions in the service of several Flow subscriber television customers in sections of the Corporate Area, formerly operated by Allied Communications, since last Friday.
In a release yesterday, the commission said it was investigating the interruptions in service with a view to addressing the problem.
Attempts to get a comment from Flow yesterday were unsuccessful as the relevant persons were out of office.
A company recording on Flow's interactive voice response system (IVR), however, stated: "As a result of the criminal activity, Flow's signals supplying analogue subscribers in the former Allied zones have been disrupted, as a temporary measure subscribers in these zones are now receiving service from an alternate distribution facility. This channel line-up differs from the regular Allied analogue feed. However, Flow's digital service in this area remains operational.
We are taking urgent measures to restore service as soon as possible and we regret any inconvenience caused."
SHAWNEE, Kan. -- A suburban Kansas City man said he accidentally fired a 2.5-inch nail into the top of his head, but added that he feels much better a doctor used a claw hammer to remove it.The mishap occurred Friday while George Chandler, of Shawnee, and a friend were working on a backyard project.
The nail gun hose became tangled, causing the powerful tool to fire once. Chandler said Monday he told his friend he didn't know where the nail went, but he felt a sting on the top of his head.Soon they discovered that the nail was driven into Chandler's skull, so they called an ambulance. He was rushed to a hospital, where a doctor used a common claw hammer to remove the nail, Chandler said.Chandler said he feels "very lucky, very, very lucky" to have escaped serious injury.

Dating Expert Reveals Types Of Cars That Attract Certain Women
Having trouble on the dating scene or attracting the type of women you seek? The problem, or solution, may be in what you pick your date up in.Of course, this is not a new concept, but simply driving a nicer car isnt exactly going to attract the exact type of woman a certain man desires, according to dating coach Deanna Lorraine. So, to help men sort through the ins and outs of the dating scene in regards to automotive choices, LeaseTrader.com gave Lorraine a list of the five most popular cars that men lease, and Lorraine gave her insight into the type of woman that car attracts. They announced the results in a press release Tuesday.
Like it or not, a car is an extension of a mans personality, according to Lorraine.A mans car reveals a lot about his personality and values, and may determine a womans attraction toward him, Lorraine stated in the press release. Women pay attention to more than just a mans personal looks. So, what will women make of the make and model you drive?
Chevy Suburban
Men who drive Suburbans are the adventurous type and enjoy spending time with friends and family. According to Lorraine, these vehicles attract women that are family-oriented, down-to-earth and easy-going.
Mercedes S-Class
Men that drive Mercedes S-Class vehicles are classy, successful and stylish and, according to Lorraine, these vehicles attract sophisticated women that are in their late 30s and 40s and enjoy being taken care of.
Ford F-150
Drivers of Ford F-150 tend to be insecure, according to Lorraine, and overcompensate for this by acting tough and driving a tough looking vehicle. Lorraine said F-150s attract women that prefer to be protected by a man so they can feel safe.
Corvette
The Corvette is the official midlife crisis car, according to Lorraine, and the men that drive them are conservative but are trying to display their wild side through their car. Lorraine said Corvettes attract women that like bad boys and are probably bad girls themselves.
Toyota Camry
The Toyota Camry is driven by men that are typically solid, reliable and committed, according to Lorraine, and these vehicles attract women that are sweet, level-headed, uncomplicated and undemanding.
'Bank on the poor' - Nobel Prize winner recommends Bangladesh-style social financial policy

Grameen Bank's founder and chief executive officer, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has urged local financial institutions to adopt a social banking policy similar to that which the Bangladesh-based entity has mastered in providing funds for the poor to establish small and micro businesses.
No less capable
Speaking at the fifth annual Scotiabank Jamaica lecture series, held yesterday at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston, Yunus said the poor were no less capable of becoming successful entrepreneurs than anyone else.
In his address to the wide cross section of representatives from Jamaica's business and banking sectors, academia and Government, the Grameen Bank founder said, "We need to fix the system so the people do not remain poor."
Yunus, who was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for his highly successful and unconventional banking model, which has achieved a near 100 per cent compliance rate in funding businesses created by the destitute in the rural villages of Bangladesh, argued that people were poor because 'the system' made them that way.
Eradicating poverty
Although recognising that the current banking framework did not allow for traditional banks to provide funds to people without the requisite security, such as collateral, the unconventional banker urged banks to practise a socially responsible business policy that would not only generate profits, but also assist in eradicating poverty, consequently reducing illiteracy and hunger.
Citing the Grameen Bank model, Yunus said there was no system of punishing borrowers who defaulted on loans; that it uses no lawyers to draft agreements with clients; and that it solicits business by walking the rural villages of the Asian country instead of clients coming into the bank. The bank, he also said, only does business with the poor.
Economist Dr Wayne Henry believes the Grameen Bank model is one that could work in Jamaica.
"Easily, it is a model that has tremendous merits when you are thinking of banking for the poor," Henry told The Gleaner at the end of the lecture yesterday. "It has shattered a lot of the stereotypes ... it is something that we would want to see, how you would strengthen the micro-finance framework in Jamaica by more closely looking at the Grameen Bank model."
Chevannes impressed
Noted social scientist, Professor Barry Chevannes, was impressed by the world's most unconventional banker.
"This is a very brilliant lecture. (It is) far more immediate than anything that you could have ever read," he said.
Chevannes, who is a senior research fellow at the Mona School of Business at the University of the West Indies, added, "The focus on women was a brilliantly devised strategy in the end because we do know in our culture that it is the women who are the managers, the directors, the backbone of the domestic situation."
Richard Darby, founding member of the Manchioneal Community Development Committee, addresses other committee members at the site of their chicken-rearing project in Manchioneal, Portland, on Tuesday. - Ian Allen/Staff Photographer
For the Manchioneal community in Portland, there is real meaning to the phrase, 'strength in numbers'. What began as a project to clean up an abandoned park has in the short space of a decade become a community building phenomenon.
"About 60 people turned out to help cut the field, some cutting, others cooking to provide the food," said Richard Darby, a founding member of the Man-chioneal Community Development Committee. It was at that point they realised they could have an impact by working together.
The community, already renowned for its participation in Jamaica Cultural Development Commission festivals, winning six gold medals this year alone and representing the island internationally at locations such as Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is one of seven nominees for the 2008 Michael Manley Award for Community Self-Reliance.
Umbrella organisations
The committee is also parent to more than 15 umbrella organisations (seven of which are churches) working towards the goal of providing not only a positive influence for younger members of the community, but also offering the support needed for all citizens to thrive in various areas of development.
"We stick to moral value and principle," said committee member and prominent community leader Denroy Palmer. "We have seen the direction that the youths are taking, we can't use the gun to solve the gun problem, the only way crime and violence can stop is through the community. We must respect them, we must show the youths that we care about them."
They began with sports; engaging the youth in football, track and field and cricket as a means of "keeping them off the streets". Then, with the aid of a grant from the Social Development Commission, the group started a chicken-rearing project and they all insisted on "sharing the profit". From the profits, tools were bought for farmers; persons were sent to computer classes; a fence was built for the basic school; a drainage system improved and a water-supply system installed

Number 10: Most Middle Eastern countries recognize the following Islamic law: "After having sexual relations with a lamb, it is a mortal sin to eat its flesh." (umm OK, Im sure the lamb appreciates that one)
Number 9: In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death. (OK, like THAT makes sense...)
Number 8: In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a womans genitals, but is forbidden from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror. (Ouch!)
Number 7: Muslims are banned from looking at the genitals of a corpse. This also applies to undertakers; the sex organs of the deceased must be covered with a brick or a piece of wood at all times. (...a brick?)
Number 6: The penalty for masturbation in Indonesia is capitation. (Wonder how they enforce that one?)
Number 5: There are men in Guam whose full-time job is to travel the countryside and deflower young virgins, who pay them for the privilege of having sex for the first time. Reason: under Guam law, it is expressly forbidden for virgins to marry. (Now lets just think for a minute...is there any job anywhere else in the world that even comes close to this?)
Number 4: In Hong Kong, a betrayed wife is legally allowed to kill her adulterous husband, but may only do so with her bare hands. (The husbands lover, on the other hand, may be killed in any manner desired. COOL)
Number 3: Topless saleswomen are legal in Liverpool, England, but only in tropical fish stores. (Of course!)
Number 2: In Santa Cruz, Bolivia it is illegal for a man to have sex with a woman and her daughter at the same time. (We have to presume this was a big enough problem that they had to pass this law...)
And the wierdest law in the world is...
In Cali, Col****ia, a woman may only have sex with her husband, and the first time this happens her mother must be in the room to witness the act. (I shudder at the thought. How many of us would be virgins today?)
Everytime an explicit question comes across you ladies have to beat around the bush with icons or dodgy answers, but yet the pictures some of you post look toooo sexxxy to pretend...SEEN!!!!!!
Ever since the use of sound for pleasure, musicians have braved politics, power, privilege and poverty to create and hone their craft, and if they are lucky enough, are heard. But the path of an entertainer is bittersweet, as personalities are also magnets for controversy, whenever it's convenient for those who are not fans.
Mr_Vegas_Grenada.jpgThe most recent controversy on the Caribbean forefront is the political strife that has trapped dancehall star Mr. Vegas in a rift between parties in Grenada.
Vegas, a veteran of the business and a scintillating entertainer who has enjoyed Billboard and crossover success over the years, was invited by the government of Grenada to perform on May 27 in Carriacou, an isle off the coast of mainland Grenada. It was an invitation Vegas gladly accepted, as he has been journeying to the shores of Grenada throughout his career, bringing dancehall beats to his spice island fans.
Hired by the ruling party of Grenada (the New National Party or NNP), Vegas was contracted to perform, with a contractual clause that prohibited any "derogative dancing" during his act. In an effort to abide by his contract, he decided to perform without his dance crew, who are truly stars in their own right within the dancehall industry. While on stage, Vegas was cautioned by a government official to keep his performance "toned down" and to not perform "Hot Wuk," a hit track from his latest album, Hot It Up, and one that has been enjoying immense radio and video play worldwide ever since its release late last year. That was what politics called for that night, and as their employee for the night, Vegas played their game. He did, however, run through his catalog of hits, including the very popular "She's A Ho," which had the audience screaming and singing along, word for word.
Now with elections in Grenada on the near horizon, the opposition party is using Vegas' lyrics, word for word, in their campaign against the government, saying the NNP condoned lyrics that called women prostitutes and encouraged drug use. As a result, the NNP, which hired Vegas, is denouncing his performance in their country. Vegas was hired for a job - to entertain, and that he did. Numerous stars have faced similar battles, even pop icon Madonna, all fighting for freedom of speech and artistic expression. Vegas was not in Grenada to prove a point; he was there to entertain. In fact, he complied with all the specifics dished out by the government officials who hired him.
Public outcries in the aftermath of Vegas' appearance fail to mention the songs that are being ridiculed, such as "She's A Ho," have been receiving airplay across the Caribbean, including Grenada, ever since its composition some 10 years ago. Furthermore, public statements made about the event have never mentioned the dangerous conditions that Vegas braved to get to the venue, as he was transported at midnight on a single-engine powerboat at 200 miles-per-hour speeds to Carriacou.
Too often, censorship by political and religious powers interferes with artistic expression, and is more of a norm in our small island nations than in larger countries worldwide. The micromanagement of local sounds can inhibit musicians when they are already battling geographical, cultural and economic limitations to break barriers and bring Caribbean music to the international masses.
Politicians that hire a dancehall star who made his name penning tunes such as "Heads High" and "Hot Gal Today" should expect to incur some amount of wrath from opponents of explicit lyrics.
Mr. Vegas is a staple in dancehall music - a genre that has carved a niche for itself by spewing gritty, hardcore and most often sexually explicit lyrics fused over bass-driven beats that literally make you want to gyrate in a dancehall. To invite Vegas to Grenada and involve him in a local political warfare is unfair. He is but an obvious pawn in the ploys of the political parties in their campaigns against each other.
However, since it is not their native music, an attack on dancehall and its stars has no impact on the government of Grenada. Perhaps they are missing the larger picture. Censorship at home and waging controversies with Caribbean musicians who are fighting to put our island nations on the global forefront can be detrimental to their craft, especially when they are victims of circumstances such as the situation at hand. As cultural icons, our entertainers are sometimes the only way people far and wide can taste Caribbean culture, or know what a Caribbean person looks like or sounds like.
Mr. Vegas' explicit lyrical expression is the definition of dancehall music. He should be celebrated for his sounds, not attacked for them. Those who find his music offensive should simply flip the dial, or better yet, not hire him for a show they knew harbored the potential for political controversy. Furthermore, they endured a similar predicament a month ago when Beenie Man incurred the same wrath after performing in Grenada. The choice of lyrics is not to be blamed; the promoters, who in this case were the government, have the ultimate choice of choosing and hiring the entertainer. The political debate and slander against an artist for his craft can continue forever, but simply put, there's no room for politics in music, unless of course, the music IS about politics. How's that for something to sing about?
Troubled singer Amy Winehouse has apologised after being caught in yet another shameful video which shows her surrounded by evidence of drugs and singing racist chants.
The home video footage was filmed by husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who is currently in prison facing trial for GBH and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
Amy's latest shocking video comes just days after Sir Ian Blair called for celebrities caught taking drugs on camera to be put on trial.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner said jurors should be given the chance to decide if illegal substances have been taken, reasoning that: 'a sensible jury would not expect people to be snorting talcum powder'.
The video, which was reportedly handed to the News of a World by a friend, shows Amy, 24, and another woman singing racist football chants to the tune of children's song 'Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes'.
However they have replaced the words with 'Blacks, pakis, gooks and nips' followed by: 'And deaf and dumb and blind and gay'.
A coffee table can be seen in the background displaying six cigarette lighters and a substance which looks like heroin on a foil.
In another section Blake, 26, asks Amy to perform a sex act on him in the public stairwell of a hotel. This is followed by a confused sequence showing shots of the steps and carpet.
Further footage shows Amy asleep while a friend Eddie discusses which drugs they have taken. He tells Blake 'A little bit of E, a little bit of C and a few beers, watched telly, smoked crack.'
Several photos of Amy have also been released including pictures of her surrounded with a pipe made from a bottle, and silver foil which appear to be drug taking paraphernalia.
Powder: Amy was pictured earlier this year with white powder on her nostrils
Deejay Vybz Kartel a.k.a Addi the Teacha is making an appeal to corporate bodies and government entitities to form a coalition of sorts to make an appeal to the troubled youths of inner city communities to shun violence and embrace real opportunities.
kartel.jpgThe deejay has already made the first step, formulating his own public service announcement denouncing violence. . He has personally bankrolled a series of public service announcements which have aired almost exclusively on ZIP FM, and on the Internet.
"We have to make an effort to reach the disenfranchised youths in Jamaica, to make them understand that crime and violence is not the answer, life is more than just guns and badness...there are many opportunities out there and other ways for them to exist and express themselveswe need to show them that," he said.
He said that he is open to any suggestions to broaden the scope of the anti-violence appeal involving other local stakeholders such as the Ministry of Health which had its own series of violence prevention activities last year. Jaevion Nelson, the Partnerships & Marketing Coordinator for the Jamaica Youth Advocacy Netowrk, has already used the PSA as part his presentation at a Youth Opportunities Unlimited (YOU) workshop on Healthy Lifestyle.
"The workshop looked at several aspects of adolescent life and how we can build and developed ourselves as young people," Mr. Nelson said. "I had heard it on the radio several Sundays ago - and thought it is a great effort that must be lauded, supported and sustained."
Jamaica's murder tally soared past the 700 mark over the weekend when the *lo**bath continued with a 16-year-old girl among 15 persons killed. The island on course for another record year of *lo**letting, and in defiance of renewed outrage against the spiralling crime rate. The police reported 34 murders and six police homicides in the first nine days of June, based on data supplied by the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN).
The deejay has been turning his attention to projects such as the promotion of his Vybz Rum liquor which has been doing well. He recently donated a computer to the Queen's High school and he plans to donate a computer to the Waterford Primary school as well as that school moves to set up a computer lab for its students.
"This move is just a continuance of the Adidja Palmer Education Foundation initiative to keep the primary schools computer literate. At this stage of their development, their minds are most impressionable and as such, what they grasp now as toddlers will greatly affect the man or woman they will become 20 years from now," he said.
"Waterford Primary has been a recipient of the Teacha's philanthropy in the past and we are just continuing the trend."
The deejay has also decided to make himself available to help raise funds for the Waterford Primary school to outfit its computer lab with up-to-date facilities. The principal of the school, Mr. Walker, when contacted, said that he welcomed any positive contribution from Vybz Kartel towards the school's facilities.
Western Jamaicans first became aware of Dwight Samuels in the late 80s as successful rib-tickling deejay Lieutenant Elmo, who has received quite a few forwards, while holding his own on many a major stage shows this side of the island.
It comes as no surprise that this son of Wakefield, Trelawny who reveres the humorous Professor Nuts, has segued into stand-up comedy and is proving to be a force to reckon with, after emerging as the 2007 Champion of Comedy Buss; dubbed Jamaicas first reality stand up comedy television show.
Dwight, the firstborn of 20 children for mother Viris Smith and father David Samuels bashfully declares that growing up he was always mischievous, but in a good way, with it being passed off as humour.
I started out as a deejay in 1983 while I was a student at William Knibb Memorial High School, and would crack up both students and teachers with my hilarious rhymes. At the time I would listen to deejays like Professor Nuts, Lieutenant Stitchie and Papa San, who were highly humorous, I would even sample their material, said Samuels.
Dwight has realized much success as deejay Lieutenant Elmo, even without the proverbial buss nationally and internationally. He has performed with the best of them on Reggae Sumfest 1998 and 1999; the historic Rise Up Concert for the Reggae Boyz in 1998 and even as recent as 2006 Reggae Sunsplash.
Samuels advent into stand-up comedy was not planned, even though for him it is second nature. My entry into stand-up comedy was more buck up. In fact, Im known for cracking up co-workers on the job (as a ramp attendant at Sangster International Airport) and my supervisor, Veroheen James encouraged me to audition for Comedy Buss saying I would surely win. As they say, the rest is history. We all know that Dwight Samuels who now goes by the moniker Don Perri is the reigning Comedy Buss king.
Life as Don Perri knows it has change dramatically for the better. He has provoked intense laughter at packed houses in Montserrat, Barbados and Trinidad, with other overseas performances pending. He also has his sight set on cashing in on the North American comedy circuit.
He vows never to loose sight of his gra**root supporters in Jamaica, especially those who voted for him during the competition, and said hes always ready to perform for them at the drop of a hat. In the meantime, this king of comedy is content with using his friends and co-workers at Air Jamaica as sounding boards for his new jokes which he develops as snippets of hilarious situations in everyday life and performing for lovers of comedy nationally.
My life has changed a whole lot, even at the most simplistic level. What would be a normal 20 minute trek through Montego Bay now takes 2 hours, as Im constantly having to big up fans who recognize me which I enjoy, said the comedian.
Samuels is convinced hes a better deejay than he is a stand-up comedian. Stand-up comedy is probably the hardest form of entertainment, as you have to keep people laughing, which is no easy feat, while as a deejay you rely on rhythm, rhymes and movement. He values both genre of entertainment and if truth be told, hes great at them.
In the world of comedy, Dwight favours local comedians, Blacka Ellis and Bobby Smith. Dave Chappelle is his international favourite. He claims Ellis is more wit than humour, Smith has an uncanny ability to relate serious issues in a most humorous way, while Chappelle is deep yet funny. He also gives high ratings to Christopher Johnny Daley, Ity & Fancy Cat, Rohan Gunter and Pretty Boy Floyd.
In spite of his hectic performance itinerary, this father of three also values down time with his children Shadeika, Shameika and Dwight Jnr.

Murders jump past 700 mark Teenaged girl among 13 persons killed, cop one of 7 shot weekend By Karyl Walker Crime/Court co-ordinator Monday, June 09, 2008
Jamaica's murder tally jumped past the 700 mark, following another *lo**y weekend in which a 16-year-old girl was among 13 persons killed and a cop among seven who were shot and injured.
LEWIN... bringing down the murder rate would be a process akin to trying to stop a runaway vehicle heading downhill The latest killings pushed the murder tally to 703, on course for another record year of *lo**letting, and in defiance of renewed outrage against the spiralling crime rate.
Police reported 28 murders and six police homicides in the first eight days of June, based on data supplied by the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN).
In May, 185 persons were killed while police reported that 489 persons had been killed between January 1 and April 30 this year.
It was apparent yesterday that criminals were paying scant regard to last week's developments in which Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin handed in his resignation and was persuaded by influential elements in the Police Service Commission to withdraw it.
Lewin was quoted Friday as saying bringing down the murder rate would be a process akin to trying to stop a runaway vehicle heading downhill. Police blotters showed weekend that the teenaged girl, Rodrique Duncan and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Junior Jarrett, were in an argument yesterday at Paradise in Norwood, St James when a gang of gunmen attacked and shot them repeatedly. Both died on the spot in the early morning incident.
A 52-year-old man who was standing nearby was also shot and injured. He was listed as stable in hospital.
The couple were among four persons killed in separate incidents in St James between Saturday and Sunday. The two others have been identified as 45-year-old Devon Cain of Salt Spring and Sean Campbell, otherwise called 'Bess', a 34-year-old shopkeeper of Paradise Crescent in the parish.
Police said explosions were heard coming from a Toyota Corolla motor car Cain was driving along Orange Street just after midnight Saturday. The car crashed into another vehicle and a man was seen running from the scene. Cain, suffering from bullet wounds, was later found slumped over the car's steering wheel. He died at hospital while being treated.
The second murder occurred about six hours later when residents again reported hearing explosions and saw two men armed with guns, running from Campbell's shop. The men then turned their guns on a woman who was travelling in an Isuzu motor truck and shot her.
On Friday, three carjackers were killed and a policeman injured after a shootout at the intersection of Dyke Road and Grange Lane, in Portmore, St Catherine.
Police say the men robbed a motorist of his car in Caymanas Gardens. The car was spotted and intercepted about 5.30 that evening. The occupants reportedly alighted from the vehicle with guns blazing and the police said they returned the fire, hitting the three men. It was afterwards discovered that the lawman had been shot.
A Taurus pistol with seven 9mm cartridges was seized. The four injured men were taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where the three robbers were pronounced dead and the lawman treated and released. It is not known if the fourth occupant of the vehicle who escaped was injured.
One of the dead men has been identified as Khamana Williams 26, of Gregory Park, St Catherine. The two other men have not yet been identified, police said.
The Bureau of Special Investigations is probing the incident. Police also report the murder of Carlton Plummer, 58, otherwise called 'Ras Michael' of Hartland district, St Catherine, who was shot and killed in the community on Saturday afternoon.
Police said Plummer was at a shop in the community when a silver motor car drove up. Three men alighted from the vehicle and opened fire, killing him on the spot.
Police list the other dead persons as:
. Denmar Woodhouse, 16, otherwise called 'Blue' of Bullet Lane in Kitson Town, St Catherine - shot and killed in the community yesterday morning. Three other men are now seriously injured in hospital.
. Aaron Morris, 46, Higgler of Mountain View, Kingston - stabbed and killed at the National Stadium car park on Friday evening.
. Damion Allen of Halse Hall, Clarendon - shot dead at his home on Friday evening.
. Hyacinth Johnson, otherwise called 'Miss Merle' 55, of Pond Side, St Thomas - shot dead by three gunmen who demanded money at her shop on Friday.
The 13th person who was identified as Damian Henry of Golden Road, Kingston 5, was killed yesterday evening in the vicinity of the Shell gas station on Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston.

LONDON (Reuters) - Aid agencies around the world may be braced for disaster over soaring food costs, but Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said on Tuesday his country was glad of the crisis and would benefit as a producer.
Speaking at a Commonwealth heads of government conference on reform of international institutions such as the International Monetary Fund in London, Museveni said the east African country's main problem was selling its food to global markets.
"We are very happy with the food problem," he said. "Why? Because we produce enough food but our problem has been marketing. We produce 10 million metric tonnes of bananas but a lot of it rots."
Many developing countries, especially net importers in Africa, have been hit by the surge in basic commodity prices in recent months, with staples such as wheat and rice rising by as much as 50 percent.
The world's poorest continent has been unable to feed itself for decades, leaving many of the poorest dependent on food aid. But in recent years several countries also including Zambia have managed to boost output, some using money freed up from debt repayments after receiving relief from Western and international creditors.
But even in some of these, the poorest were struggling to feed themselves even before prices began to soar. In others, however, higher food prices are likely to provide a much-needed cash injection to impoverished rural communities.
Earlier in the year, Sri Lanka's central bank chief told Reuters he expected rising food prices to help reduce poverty among some of the island's poorer farmers.
MILK TO INDIA
Musaveni said Uganda had benefited across a range of agricultural products. Until recently, he said Uganda had been having to pour away surplus milk but was now shipping it to a processor in India.
He said he hoped the crisis would prompt wider trade reform. African farmers complain tariffs and Western subsidies have long hit their ability to compete fairly, blocking growth.
"I think out of all these hiccups we may get a more rationalised interaction in terms of the use of our resources, through trade, by removing trade barriers, by removing subsidies," he said.
Uganda has been hailed as a shining example of stability in Africa with steady growth expected to reach 8.9 percent in 2007/2008 from 6.5 percent the previous year.
It is sometimes described alongside Ghana, Zambia and Tanzania as part of a new generation of African "frontier markets" that are seeing rising fund inflows from both Western and emerging Asian investors.
But analysts say African economies are also particularly at risk from soaring inflation from rising oil and food prices, with the rocketing cost of living increase in suffering and stoking tensions, protests and strikes from Morocco to Guinea, Kenya and South Africa.
