Putnam County boy shot scene
Deputies say 10-year-old Dakota Wilson was accidentally shot by a 14-year-old friend while the two were playing with a handgun in this home on state Road 207A in East Palatka.

The 10-year-old East Palatka boy accidentally shot in the head on June 15 remains hospitalized, but his condition has stabilized, his father told the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
Dakota Wilson is breathing on his own and is able to move his arms and legs, Scott Wilson told authorities. Because he continues to have a breathing tube, he responds to questions by writing on a chalkboard.
Deputies said the boy was shot by a 14-year-old friend while playing with a pistol in the Wilson home on county Road 207A.

The boy was initially transported to Putnam Community Medical Center, then airlifted to Shands-Gainesville Medical Center.
A benefit account was opened for anyone wishing to help with the boy's medical bills. Contributions can be made to the Wilson Family Fun at the First Federal Bank in Hastings.
"The family is most appreciative of the tremendous support and prayers of their friends and community," according to a release from the sheriff's office.
Sheriff Dean Kelly said the day after the shooting that it would be up to the State Attorney's Office to determine if any charges would be filed based on state statutes regarding keeping firearms secure from children.
Deputies said the gun was a Taurus 9 mm pistol owned by the boy's parents, who were not home at the time of the shooting.
Police said a 7-year-old boy drove his grandmother's car more than a mile to a Muncie, Ind., shopping mall before another motorist blocked the car and took the keys.
Several motorists called police Tuesday morning to report a small child driving a Geo Tracker. Muncie Police Chief Deborah Davis said the unidentified boy was so small that some motorists could not see anyone behind the wheel.
A motorist followed the car as it turned into the mall parking lot and ran into some bushes and a tree. He blocked the car with his vehicle and took the keys from the boy.

Davis said child protective services was called to examine the boy.
Police speculated he might have learned to drive from a video game.
Two people were arrested after a chase Wednesday evening over the roads and through a swampy area of Bradford County that required a rescue of a Department of Corrections K-9 team.
Officials said police were pursuing Lemuel Cooper on outstanding warrants when the suspect vehicle crashed into a Starke police cruiser. Cooper and driver Joshua Hutchinson took off on foot.
Police, deputies and the DOC tracking team followed the men into a swampy area.

Cooper and Hutchinson were found late Wednesday night using an infrared camera in an Alachua County Sheriff's Office helicopter. They were arrested and face a variety of charges, including assaulting the police dog.
During the search for the fugitives, two officers and their *lo**hound became lost when the sun went down and they were caught without flashlights or radios. They were hoisted out of the swamp by a Coast Guard helicopter early Thursday morning.
The officers were treated for heat exhaustion, dehydration and injuries sustained in the search.

Police
in St Catherine are still searching for a teenage girl who ran into
bushes naked after she was found in the arms of a man who is facing
sex-related charges in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

"We
cannot find her, Your Honour, and the school that she attends is giving
no cooperation to the police, but we will try to locate her," said
investigating officer, Detective Corporal Kirk Roache, when the matter
was mentioned yesterday.

The
man and two women are before the court because of the incident. The man
is facing carnal abuse and harbouring a juvenile charges, while one of
the women is facing charges of harbouring a juvenile. The other, who is
the child's sister, is charged with aiding and abetting carnal abuse.

Allegations
read in court on June 24 revealed that the man, a 35-year-old
construction worker, took home the 15-year-old girl, along with her
28-year-old sister, to his matrimonial house.

Elder sibling

He allegedly told his wife that both sisters have fallen on "hard times" and he was helping them out.

It
is reported that when the wife left for market the man had sex with the
child with the knowledge of her elder sibling. When the wife returned
she was told what took place. An argument developed and the husband placed her in another section of the house and moved in with the 15-year-old girl.

The
police got wind of the argument and went to the house, where they
allegedly saw the juvenile and the husband wrapped up on the
matrimonial bed. The wife and other members were also seen in the back
room.

It
is reported that when the police attempted to enter the building, the
wife tried to prevent them, and the husband also tried to run away.

During this time, the girl ran away and has not being seen since.

The
wife, who is charged with harbouring a juvenile, was granted $200,000
bail, the husband $200,000, while the sister who has been charged with
aiding and abetting carnal abuse was granted $20,000 bail.

They are to return to court on August 5 when the case will again be mentioned.

Deadbeat boyfriend

Dear Pastor,

I am a 24-year-old female and I have a big problem that I wish you could help me with. I have a boyfriend and we have been together for the past four years and nine months. During the first four months, everything was ok until he started dating other women and he would tell me about it and on numerous occasions he would beat me up when I tried to leave him.

It is always ok for him to talk about them and I must not say anything. He is still doing it and I can't leave because he is the only person I have to talk to. This is really killing me and I don't know what to do. He keeps telling me that he loves me and tells all his friends and family about me, but at the end of the day he doesn't even respect me because he has his woman calling him all the time. It doesn't matter what we are doing, it is just like I am not there. This is not even half of what I am going through.

Pastor, I am asking you just to give me your fatherly advice on what to do or what step to take. I try not to depend on him for anything. I am not working, but I attended evening classes.

S.C., St. Andrew, Jamaica

Dear S.C.,

This man has no right to beat you and the next time he does, you should report him to the police immediately. The police should arrest him and put him in jail. Some of these guys are just feisty and out of order and poor you, you believe that he is the only person who would talk to you.

How sad, you have low self-esteem. That is why you believe that you wouldn't have anybody to talk to you. You should think highly of yourself and you should not give this man the idea that he can do whatever he wants with you.

Can you imagine if this guy was married to you? He is not a good guy and he has no respect for you. That's why he tells you about his other women and does not expect you to show your displeasure. I repeat, if he hits you again, report him to the police immediately.

Pastor

NEW YORK (AP) -- Kanye West defended himself from criticism over his delayed performance at Bonnaroo, saying on his blog that the flak he's taken has left him "the most offended I've ever been." Kanye West's performance was delayed at Bonnaroo because of an elaborate stage and scheduling problems. West's performance at the Tennessee festival was scheduled for 2:45 a.m. in the early morning of June 15. West didn't take the stage until 4:25 a.m., angering much of the crowd who had stayed up late to see the rapper perform. The delay was caused by problems setting up West's elaborate stage set, which included an interplanetary landscape of a wavy black platform and a video screen above. Pearl Jam, who had performed on the main stage earlier that evening, also went an hour over its scheduled time. While waiting for West's concert to begin, many in the crowd pelted the stage with glow sticks and beer. At the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, which traditionally has favored jam bands, West's delayed show became a kind of rallying point, leading to "Kanye sucks" chants and criticism from pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph, who played later the same day. Writing Tuesday on his blog at www.kanyeuniversity.com in almost all caps, West said he was offended that anyone would think he doesn't care about his fans and blamed the delay on festival organizers. "This Bonnaroo thing is the worst insult I've ever had in my life," West wrote. "This is the most offended I've ever been ... this is the maddest I ever will be." West was critical of the festival for not releasing a statement in his defense. The morning after the show, The Associated Press asked festival spokesman Ken Weinstein about the delay. Weinstein said it was simply a matter of unloading the Pearl Jam stage after its set (which went until about 1:15 a.m.) and loading the West stage. Following his performance, West's publicist didn't reply to a request from The AP for West's take on the criticism. In his blog posting, West said he and the festival organizers (Bonnaroo is put on by Superfly Productions and AC Entertainment) went back and forth for a month on how his stage could fit at the festival. He said it was clear he was "dealing with ... idiots who didn't really have the capacity to really put on this show properly." Weinstein on Wednesday relayed a statement on behalf of the festival that did not specifically address West's complaints but read: "Our world-class event production team strives to accommodate the needs of every performer." West also blamed thrown bottles for malfunctions with his "Jane screen." (In the concept concert, Jane is the HAL-like disembodied female robotic voice of his spaceship.) But the stage crew appeared to be having difficulty with the screen well before anything was thrown from the crowd. West's set was originally scheduled for 8:15 p.m. the night of June 14, but the rapper requested it be moved later in the evening so it was sufficiently dark for his "glow-in-the-dark" performance. But because of the late start, midway through his performance the morning light began to show -- revealing a substantially thinned-out audience. "It broke my heart that I couldn't give these fans 'Stronger' in its greatest form," said West, referring to his hit song. "I'm sorry to everyone that I didn't have the ability 2 give the performance I wanted to. I'm sorry." West concluded by saying his elaborate stage cuts his payday in half and leaves him icing his knees. "Call me what you want," he said, "but never say I didn't give my all!"

Did Rev. Al Sharpton out CNN's Anderson Cooper, or just tell him he was going to Hell?

"None of us leaves our personal convictions or religious feelings at the door," Sharpton told Cooper during a panel discussion, "but we also respect the fact that everyone doesn't have to have those same convictions in the public marketplace."

"I may have some very conservative personal feelings, but I feel you have the right to live your life differently.

"I might think what you do, Anderson, is going to put you in Hell, but I'm going to defend your right to get there."

"I'm going to try to keep you from going there," added Family Research Council's Tony Perkins.

Sharpton went on to say that he'd prefer to convert Cooper rather than "legislate Heaven" and force him there.

"I appreciate both of your concerns about my afterlife," Cooper joked. "I'm personally not all that concerned, but that's a...whole other discussion."

A clip of the exchange is available to view below, as broadcast on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 on June 24, 2008. Also see the bonus clip, as posted to YouTube, originally broadcast in July of 2007.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The rate of occurrence of peripheral artery disease is greater in blacks than whites in the United States, and various risk factors for heart disease do not completely account for the difference, researchers report.

Peripheral artery disease affects the circulation in the legs, and can lead to pain and difficulty walking. Dr. Joachim H. Ix of the University of California, San Diego and colleagues note that traditional risk markers such as diabetes and hypertension have failed to account for the high rate of peripheral artery disease in African Americans.

To investigate whether other risk factors might shed light on the matter, the researchers studied 104 patients with peripheral artery disease and 164 matched "controls."

Compared to others in the study, African Americans had a threefold higher risk for peripheral artery disease, the team reports in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Factoring in traditional risk factors and certain non-traditional risk markers reduced the likelihood to two-fold, according to the article.

The main non-traditional risk factors that made a difference were levels fibrinogen, associated with clotting, and lipoprotein (a), which is involved in plaque build-up in arteries.

Summing up, Ix told Reuters Health, "We observed that the c****ination of traditional risk factors like higher *lo** pressure and diabetes, in conjunction with the new risk factors accounted for approximately 60 percent of the higher prevalence of African-Americans compared to Caucasians. Thus, approximately 40 percent of the higher prevalence remains unexplained in our study."

The investigators say life-style and genes may be the missing link.

Be very careful when u get caught with dust...as following pictures shows the effects of bad dust to a person. While he was talking with his friends on the street he felt an eye irritation, thinking that it was just regular dust, he started to rub his eye, in an effort to remove the dust.... then his eyes got really red, and he went and bought some eye drops from a pharmacy....few days passed and his eyes were still red and seems a little swollen.

Again he dismissed it as the constant rubbing and that it will go away. The days go by the swelling of his eye got worse, redder and bigger....till he decided to go and see a doctor for a check up.
The doctor immediately wanted an operation, being afraid of a tumor growth or cyst. At the operation, what was thought to be a growth or cyst, actually turned out to be a live worm...... what was thought initially to be just mere dust actually was an insect's egg.

If u do get  dust, and the pain persists, pls. go, see a doctor immediately.........

Naked Man Arrested Immediately After Getting Out Of Jail
Thursday June 26, 2008

There are dumb criminals and then there's what a man named Bill Merit is accused of doing.

The Savannah, Georgia resident had been in jail for two days after being booked on charges of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

When his captors let him out on Wednesday, they provided him with some clothes to wear as he left the grounds. But it turns out Merit didn't much like the duds, for some reason thinking they were stolen - which would certainly be an odd thing for a justice system institution to hand out.

So minutes after being released, he took them off.

Unfortunately for him and everyone else in the area, he didn't have a replacement.

Minutes later, witnesses began calling police about a naked man wandering down the road near the facility. Cops collared the 49-year-old and sent him right back to where he came from, this time on charges of public indecency.

A police report indicates there didn't seem to be anything wrong with the suspect, bizarrely noting he "appeared rational, except for being naked."

He remains in jail, hopefully fully clothed.

We can only hope when he gets out, he likes the next outfit a lot better.

First you had T.I. beefing with Shawty Lo, then you had 50 Cent beefing with Young Buck. Now MediaTakeOut.com hears that a new beef is brewing - between Chris Brown and Ne-Yo.

Word going around is that Chris has been privately talking slick about Ne-Yo's singing abilities and bragging about how his ability to outsell Ne-Yo. And there's some truth to what Chris is saying. According to Soundscan, Ne-Yo's last album Because of You sold fewer than 1 million units in the U.S. By contrast, Chris Brown's last album Exclusive sold nearly 2 million units in the U.S.

Well, Ne-Yo figured the best way to get back at Chris was to create a diss rap .... We know, how original. Here are some of the highlights to Ne-Yo's lyrical masterpiece:

PORT-AU-PRINCE (AFP) Haitian President Rene Preval has designated Michele Pierre-Louis as his new prime minister, parliament leader Kely Bastien said, after the body turned down two other candidates in the past month.

Pierre-Louis, 61, is a close friend of Preval who since 1995 has headed FOKAL (the Foundation of Knowledge and Liberty), a non-governmental organization financed by American billionaire George Soros.

She is the third person chosen by Preval to succeed Jacques-Edouard Alexis, who was removed from office March 12 by a censure motion in parliament.

MOGADISHU, Somalia - A government minister says Somali gunmen have demanded $1 million for the release of a German couple, their young son and a French boat captain.

The Europeans were seized Monday from a yacht off the Gulf of Aden and taken to Puntland, a semiautonomous region of northern Somalia.

Jama Hirsi Farah, minister of state for security in the region, said Thursday that the kidnappers have demanded $1 million.

The condition of the captives is not clear. A clan elder who is helping negotiate says the boy is suffering from a fever and needs medical help.

There were verbal clashes between Attorney General Dorothy Lightbourne and Opposition senator, K.D. Knight, in Gordon House yesterday.

The two were participating in the first meeting of a joint select committee to examine a critical piece of legislation that will repeal the Police Public Complaints Act.

The verbal sparring ensued after Knight said Lightbourne, who chairs the committee, "fumbled" through her presentation on the proposed law.

The bill is intended to establish an independent commission, which will have responsibility for investigating police shootings and abuses by members of the security forces.

Lightbourne commented on the provisions of the Independent Commission of Investigations Act, 2008, before she asked committee members to make their input.

Knight's criticism of how Lightbourne presented the contents of the bill triggered asharp exchange between the two senior parliamentarians.

Knight chastised

Rejecting the suggestion that she fumbled through her presentation, Lightbourne chastised Knight for his comment, calling it "very offensive".

"I'll ask you as we start the proceedings that you behave yourself," she said. "Stop grand-standing and playing to the press."

But Knight insisted that Lightbourne mishandled the presentation.

During further deliberations, it was proposed by some committee members that stakeholders such as the Jamaican Bar Association, the Advocates Association, human rights groups, the Police Federation and the Jamaica Civil Service Association be invited to participate in the talks.

However, Knight raised a concern that later led to another stand-off between himself and Lightbourne.

Public input risky

He argued that it might not be a good idea to invite civil servants or other persons in the Government's employ to participate in the discussions.

"It is dangerous to invite them to publicly speak on this bill," Knight said, adding that they might be against the policy.

He said these persons should have been part of the ministry team that reviewed the bill, before it was sent to Cabinet for approval.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Bruce Golding directed his cabinet secretary to remind public officers that the Staff Orders restricts them from commenting publicly on government policy.

His comments followed the proposal by a senior medical officer, Dr Kevin Harvey, for the legalisation of prostitution and the taxing of sex workers.

HEAD of the Kingston East police division, Superintendent Assan Thompson, is praising a special police unit for finding over 20 firearms, including assault rifles and sub machine guns, since September last year.

Thompson said the elite four-man team, which was specifically put together to find and seize illegal weapons, has been effective in carrying out its duties in some of the most volatile communities in the division.

"These men were trained specifically on how to search for and find firearms, and at this point the dividends of their efforts could not be better," Thompson said Tuesday.
The team is responsible for the seizure of 23 weapons and an army grenade since September 2007.

Three of the weapons - a Mack 11 sub machine gun, and two 9mm pistols - and more than 28 rounds of ammunition were seized during operations carried out on Noswad Road in Rockfort and Summerset Avenue in Franklyn Town within a 40-hour time period last week.

Nineteen-year-old Havon Hases of Lennox Avenue and another man were also arrested during the find.

Thompson however, said the high haul of illegal weapons is an indication of the high number of illegal weapons in the division's hotbed communities. He said that although the increase in the haulage was cause for celebration, it also signified the volume of work facing his men in ridding the division of illegal guns.

"Based on the ease and frequency at which these weapons are being recovered, we believe that it is an indication as to the high proliferation of firearms in this section of the city," said Thompson.

He said that the police have intensified their efforts in the pursuit of illegal guns in the area, paying special attention to the war-torn Rockfort community.

Rockfort, he said, which has only since recent weeks returned to a level of normalcy, is believed to be one of the communities with the highest number of illegal guns.

THE National Workers Union (NWU) yesterday signed off on a 14 per cent salary hike for all but two category of workers at the national carrier at an emergency meeting between union representatives and the management.

The signing of the agreement came just hours after the Observer broke the story that the board of the cash-strapped airline had been asked to tender its resignation to
the Government.

The rush to sign off on the agreement comes amidst concerns by the union that a new board could rescind on the agreement reached earlier this week with the existing board for a 14 per cent increase.

A Government spokesman confirmed that the airline's board had been asked to resign, but there was no official word last night on when a new board was likely to be appointed.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding said on Monday that the airline's loss was expected to exceed the US$170 million it accumulated last year, and that Cabinet took some decisions to strengthen the approach towards privatising the cash-strapped airline by March 31.

Yesterday, Vincent Morrison, president of the NWU, said the emergency meeting between the union and management was to finalise and sign off on a number of labour agreements for the various groups within the 2,400 staff complement at the company.

"As we speak the major current labour agreements have been finalised at the proposed 14 per cent increase," he said.

Asked if the union was concerned that this decision could be reversed when a new board takes office, given the severity of the loss at the airline, Morrison said the union would not allow that to happen.

"The NWU wouldn't take it lightly that wage agreement reached with one board and one set of management is revoked by a new board and new management coming in," he told the Observer.

Labour Minister Pearnel Charles said his ministry would not support any reversal of this agreement reached and signed off on.

"The Ministry of Labour would not be supporting any reversal of the decision arrive at between the management and the workers," Charles told the Observer.

He said he didn't think the government would make an attempt to reverse any decision arrived at by the union and the management, since they (the management) would be acting on behalf of the Government. "That don't seem sensible to me," he said.

".I don't think the management would arrive at a settlement without the appropriate minister knowing about it," he reiterated.

In the meantime, Morrison blamed the airline's board for what he described as a "lack of experience and expertise to deal with the serious financial situation at the company.
He also claimed that the airline was not given the opportunity to manage itself because of continuous interference from the finance ministry.

The NWU president said too, that with the present 'uncertainties', Air Jamaica workers were uneasy and had not been officially informed that a new board was to be put in place, a view supported by the airline's workers at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.

"Right now we don't even know what is happening because we have not been told anything other than what we read in the Observer this morning," said a union delegate who chose to remain anonymous.

The increase signed off on yesterday will be retroactive to January of last year for all categories of workers except the flight attendants and the maintenance group. Morrison said these two groups did not sign yesterday as they are requesting that some adjustments be made to their agreement. They are, however, expected to sign off by this month-end. lc

CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico When George Terrazas was mugged at gunpoint in this Mexican border city several months ago, he vowed never to return.

That, however, was before gasoline hit $4 a gallon in his hometown, El Paso, just across the border.

On Saturday, Mr. Terrazas was back in Ciudad Juárez, wooed by its irresistibly low-priced gasoline around $2.66 a gallon even if not quite unfazed by the indiscriminate gunfire from dueling drug cartels that has contributed to a 2008 average of three killings a day in the city.

I dont feel comfortable here, he said, but I cant even fill the tank on the U.S. side.

Mr. Terrazas, a 48-year-old maintenance worker, is among a flow of American gas tourists who, Mexican service stations near the border with El Paso estimate, account for a 50 percent surge in gasoline sales here over the last several months. (Similar increases are reported along the border all the way to Tijuana.) Even the Mexico Tourism Board is promoting the journey.

At the Servicio Herrera service station here, the manager, Jorge Salinas, estimated that Americans were now 30 percent of his customers. They arrive at all hours, Mr. Salinas said, from 6 a.m. to midnight.

On his visit Saturday, Mr. Terrazas saved about $20 filling his 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. He said that when he returned to El Paso, he would monitor the bridge traffic from his house, and that once it waned, he would come back to fill his other vehicle, an S.U.V., for an even bigger saving.

And while here he would pick up six-packs of Tecate beer and produce like passion fruit, and even visit an orthodontist. In all, he expected to save $200. The border, he said, flashing a mouthful of braces, is our advantage.

The low gasoline and diesel prices that draw Americans here are a result of subsidies provided by the Mexican government to curb inflation and make fuel affordable to the poor.

The moment may not last. Severe gasoline and diesel shortages, caused by the increased demand from Americans and delivery problems as well, have been reported from here to Mexicos border with California. (On Friday the government-owned monopoly oil company, Petróleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, said that it would provide a one-time allotment of an extra 300,000 barrels of diesel fuel to meet increased demand along the border.)

Moreover, experts question how long the government can continue providing gasoline subsidies, which will amount to more than $20 billion this year.

For now, though, many South Texans are buying all the fuel they can south of the border, and little wonder. Four of the seven poorest urbanized counties in the United States are along the Texas border, including El Paso, according to a 2006 Census Bureau report.

El Pasoan desperation shows in the leathery face of Jimmy Gann, 57. Mr. Ganns employer, a family trucking business, is on the verge of bankruptcy, he said, and to help the owners stay afloat, he makes three 32-mile round-trip sprints across the border each day. Once here, he fills a 100-gallon tank with diesel which is going for $2.20 a gallon on this side, compared with $4.55 on the other then returns north, unloads the tank at his employers business and does it all over again.

One Texan in the trucking industry, who declined to give his name for fear of being prosecuted for tax evasion, said he saved $12,000 a month by fueling his four-truck fleet in Mexico.

On the El Paso side, service station employees say business is down about 40 percent, even at a Chevron station that may have the best deal in town: gasoline at $3.89 a gallon. Just two months ago, stations on the Texas side attracted many Mexicans, who crossed to buy what they considered higher-quality gasoline that was more expensive but still affordable.

We keep saying, Have you seen so-and-so? and the answer is always no, said Rocio Salazar, 30, a station attendant in El Paso. It used to be like rush hour on the freeway in here.

The drop in business has made all the worse along the Texas border what were already hard times for many owners of American service stations. The spike in gasolines price has caused many customers to cut back, and that, coupled with increased fees of credit card companies, has put an increasing number of retailers on the brink of bankruptcy, says the National Association of Convenience Stores, which represents convenience and petroleum retailers in the United States.

Jose Alfredo has worked at a Chevron station in El Paso for 18 years. With no convenience store to cushion a 50 percent drop in business, the station has laid off five of its eight employees.

Everyone knows Mexican gas is watered down, but customers dont care anymore, Mr. Alfredo said with a shrug.

Managers of Mexican stations deny that accusation. They also say that most of the gasoline they sell is refined in the United States. But one American oil executive noted that the sulfur content allowed in gasoline by the Mexican government was higher than what is allowed in the United States, and said that over time, the higher level could compromise vehicle emissions systems. In addition, Mexican refineries lack a capacity to produce low-sulfur diesel, which is standard in the United States.

The Mexican diesel is not a good thing for the air, but its a good thing for people who want to save money, said Tom Kloza, a chief analyst at Oil Price Information Service.

Edith Marquez is one American who has so far resisted buying Mexican gasoline, citing quality concerns. But she visits Juárez every Saturday for the $15 saving at a weight control doctor, whose office is attached to a Pemex station. Im afraid for my car, but Ill let the doctor here put vitamins in me, Ms. Marquez said with a laugh.

For gas station attendants in Mexico, who earn $100 a week, the surge in sales has meant extra money to tuck into the pockets of their olive green overalls. To tip attendants is the custom here, and one of them, Alejandro Jurado, flashing a brick-size wad of pesos and dollars, said, Americans tip better.

LOS ANGELES (AP) T-Pain transformed the BET Awards into a circus Tuesday with a multi-artist medley that showed the rapper and singer's wide-ranging influence on urban music, while best-selling rapper Lil Wayne and songstress Alicia Keys gave rousing performances of their own.

Wearing a spangled top hat, T-Pain nominated for a leading five BET Awards shared the stage with fellow nominees Flo Rida, Rick Ross, Ludacris and Big Boi, along with a bevy of big-top freaks, including fire eaters and acrobats.

"This industry is my circus," said T-Pain. "Ride with the ringleader."

Then T-Pain whose nominations came not for his own hits but for his collaborations with others, and whose vocoder-assisted voice is among the most ubiquitous in urban music gave a sample of his musical assists over the past year.

Double nominee Flo Rida performed his hit with T-Pain, "Low"; a bare-chested Ross flaunted his gut while singing his song with T-Pain, "Boss"; and all joined in on the collaborative "I'm So Hood."

Not to be outdone, the ladies offered a showstopping performance of their own, led by double nominee Keys. Rocking a sleek bob and skintight jeans, Keys invited vintage girl groups SWV, En Vogue and TLC to join her onstage for a medley of their biggest hits. By the time they closed with TLC's "Waterfalls," the crowd at the Shrine Auditorium was on its feet. Even Kanye West was singing along.

Viewers Choice award winner Lil Wayne was set to deliver the night's most anticipated performance, and he didn't disappoint. Joined by uber-collaborator T-Pain, who wore a t-shirt that read "T-Wayne," Lil Wayne delivered a medley of hits including "A Milli" and his No. 1 smash "Lollipop."

West, who won awards for best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration for his song with T-Pain, "Good Life," used his victories to praise both T-Pain and Lil Wayne.

"We're blessed to be in this man's presence," West said of T-Pain, whom he called "a genius." "I'll let y'all know because I'm one of the kings of this game. My opinion counts."

West called Lil Wayne "my fiercest competition." The New Orleans-based rapper last week sold 1 million copies of "Tha Carter III" for the year's best sales debut.

"You scared me man," West said. "Congratulations on selling over a million records. And they say hip hop is dead."

After tributes by Jill Scott and Maxwell, Lifetime Achievement Award winner Al Green delivered a smash performance of his own, hitting all the high notes on his hits "Let's Stay Together" and "Love and Happiness."

Diddy, Ludacris and the rest of the awards-show audience sang along as the 62-year-old Reverend Green shook his booty on stage.

"I'm sorry I didn't sing as well as I could. I got scared," a modest Green confessed backstage.

Queen Latifah introduced Humanitarian Award recipient Quincy Jones, calling him "an international artist, an innovator ... and a leader."

"He showed us black entertainment is more than just a hustle," she said. "It's more than just selling albums. It's about inspiration."

Jones said growing up on the south side of Chicago during the depression moved him to give back to people in need.

"My piece of bread only belongs to me if everybody has a piece to eat," he said.

Receiving the award "is one of the very treasured moments of my life," Jones said, "and I always hope to live up to this honor."

A s****er moment came when UGK was named best group. Bun B honored his fallen bandmate, Pimp C, who died in December at age 33 from complications of sleep apnea.

"It's hard to do this with my brother not being here," Bun B said, while joined onstage with Pimp C's wife. "We want to thank y'all for supporting UGK all these years. It's still UGK for life... Long live Pimp C."

Usher opened the show pyrotechnics-filled performance as he sang "Love in this Club." The highly choreographed set, which featured Usher pop-locking, gyrating and grooving his way across the stage with a bevy of voluptuous dancers, gave the show a high-energy start.

Host D.L. Hughley's opening monologue was a little less explosive his jokes about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the recently acquitted R. Kelly and President Bush fell flat but he didn't slow the pace of the performance-heavy show.

Key collaborations kept the show buzzing along.

Singer (and BET reality star) Keyshia Cole gave a glamorous performance of her ballad "Heaven Sent," descending from the ceiling while wearing a long flowing gown, before a dancer ripped it off, revealing a white top and shorts as she sang her hit "Let It Go" with Lil Kim.

West rapped alongside Young Jeezy in performance that was marked by its omissions censors muted much of their performance. Chris Brown, who was seated next to rumored girlfriend Rihanna, won the night's first award: best male R&B artist. Brown was later joined onstage by Ciara for a sizzling performance that showed off each artist's dance skills, and a shirtless Nelly unveiled a new song with Fergie.

Kobe Bryant and Missy Elliott were early winners, but the best male athlete and female hip-hop artist weren't there to collect their awards, nor was the evening's best new artist winner, The-Dream.

Here's the complete list of winners from the 2008 BET Awards:

Don't mislead the country

June 26, 2008

THE Jamaican Government, which is already grappling with the fall-out from the global food crisis and rising oil prices, yesterday appealed to the parliamentary Opposition not to mislead the country in terms of the nature of the problems as the country faces a 22 per cent inflation rate.

"Let no one misunderstand the severity of the global pressure, and I could offer some advice, which is not offered gratuitously, let no one seek to mislead the country about the nature of the crisis we are now facing," Prime Minister Bruce Golding told the House of Representatives yesterday during a debate on a motion to withdraw $620 million from the bauxite levy-fed Capital Development Fund (CDF).

The Opposition's spokesman on finance, Dr Omar Davies, suggested that the Government was wrong to have predicated the current budget on an eight to nine per cent inflation rate and suggested a recalibration of the estimates.

"That could not hold, and if you are going to build a credible budget around an assumption which all indicators pointed to could not hold, you are setting yourself up for failure," said Davies, a former finance minister.

"I sincerely hope your technicians have already embarked on that task to start recalibrating, because you're going to have an interest payment in excess of what you have anticipated," Davies added.

Golding, however, insisted that while the period is a challenging one, with the global situation being the worst in 50 years and exerting significant pressures on the economy, the Government was determined to maintain its fiscal profile.

"We are determined because we have no choice but to maintain confidence in our macro-economic programme," the prime minister said.

He said that confidence was responsible for the fact the country was able to raise US$350 million in the market last week at a 'good rate."

"We are determined to maintain the fiscal programme that we have outlined in the budget. It is absolutely important to do so because for us to fail on that account has consequences that the market will impose on us that are more bizarre than I would want to contemplate at this time," Golding added.

He said that in the last 12 months prices had more than doubled globally, and Jamaica had imported the products, as
well as the inflation, because of its vulnerability in so many respects.

The Government, said the prime minister, has been using its influence to keep prices as stable as possible, and he told the House that the Ministry of Industry, Investments and Commerce holds daily dialogue with the trade.

Golding said, too, that his Government was discussing other measures to contain food prices, in addition to promoting increased agricultural production.

The $620 million from the CDF, which will be shared between the Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ), $500,000, and the Jamaica Bauxite Institute for budgetary support, was approved by the House.

While Jah Cure's European tour is in full swing, the artiste has been consistent on the airwaves both in Jamaica and internationally and his videos are becoming a staple worldwide.

Jah Cure is presently in Europe doing a multi-city tour and is slated to perform at the Rototom Festival on Friday July 11 at Rivellino Park in Osoppo, Italy. The tour has been very successful so far with stops in Germany, France, Sweden, Denmark, Holland and many other European cities.

"I have been enjoying the tour so far and I am very appreciative of the fans support that I have received at all the venues. This is the biggest tour I have been on in my career and I have been overwhelmed by the wide acceptance of my music and my positive message in Europe". Jah Cure said.

While videos for songs such as 'Sticky' have been constant on local and international media portals, Jah Cure still maintains a heavy schedule between the studio and the stage. It is then amazing that the artiste has been able to pull off the shooting of three videos in short order before commencing his European tour. Renowned video director Jay Will recently wrapped the marathon filming of the three videos: 'Hot Long Time', 'Journey' and 'Green Gra**'.

Hot Long time featuring Jah Cure and new Danger Zone/SoBe Entertainment artiste Junior Reid was produced by the ever in demand Steve Morales. The song has become very popular and gets regular spins on BBC 1xtra (UK) and other major radio stations.

The Hot Long Time video was filmed in Port Royal and produced by Carlene Samuels. According to Jay Will the Hot Long Time video features "Hot Bikes, Hot Cars, Hot helicopters and Hot girls and mirrors the heat that accompanies the careers of Jah Cure and Junior Reid at this time". The video is a departure from the videos Jah Cure is known for but will still be a favourite with the fans.

The second video is for the song Journey and sees Jah Cure journeying across Jamaica chronicling his 'trod'. The video is a masterpiece and features several of Jamaica's more notable landmarks and scenic country side.

The third video filmed by Jay Will was for the song Green Gra**. Not the usual herb song, Green Gra** maintains Jah Cure's message of consciousness. Green Gra** is a very symbolic video and will appeal to all official 'herbs man and woman'.

Commenting on doing three videos in a week for Jah Cure, Jay Will was quite complimentary: "It was really challenging coming up with three different ideas with each having their own feel but I rose to the occasion and people will like them . These are three wicked songs which are full of energy and conscious messages. The calibre of artistes involved in addition to the tremendous support of Danger Zone and Sobe Entertainment made the experience and effort worthwhile. I believe people will like all three videos and will appreciate the quality and style of production".

All three videos will be released this summer, simultaneously, and will act as further evidence of Jah Cure's commitment to putting out quality music.

Kartela.jpgDeejay Vybz Kartel a.k.a Addi the Teacha has denied that he and DAngel are involved in an intimate relationship, and stressed that they're more than friends, they "are family'.

What you see is what you get. DAngel and I have known each other for many years, is not just a friend ting, it is family. Crazy people have been talking since they saw us at a dance in Barbican on Sunday and later on at the Quad, but what you see is what you get, is a family ting, we are both artistes, we collaborate on projects and that is it, he told one876entertainment.com

Vybz Kartel and DAngel scored a number one c****ination hit, Babyfather, several months ago in the height of the controversy when Kartel left the Alliance and was involved in a war of words with Bounty Killer and his protégé, Mavado. He also attended the wedding festivities of Beenie and DAngel when he was still a full-fledged member of the Alliance.  He and D'Angel also collaborated on a single that appeared to poke fun at Beenie Man late last year but that song fizzled soon after its release.

Comedic legends Chris Tucker and Dave Chappelle were caught having a blast Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles.

Maybe the two were talking about working on a new project together. Or perhaps, moving to Africa. Tucker recently took a trip to Ethiopia which he described as my favorite African country. Because of the history, it is just beautiful and the people are beautiful and nice.

We all know Chappelle went on hiatus in South Africa after walking away from Season 3 of the Chappelle Show.

Whatever the two were talking about they seemed to be having a great time and thats really what life is all about. Laughing and having a good time.

PHOENIX (AP)Shaquille ONeal will lose his special deputys badge in Maricopa County because of language he used in a rap video that mocks former teammate Kobe Bryant. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the Phoenix Suns centers use of a racially derogatory word and other foul language left him no choice. Arpaio made Shaq a special deputy in 2006 and promoted him to colonel of his largely ceremonial posse later that year. I want his two badges back, Arpaio told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Because if any one of my deputies did something like this, theyre fired. I dont condone this type of racial conduct. Shaq was seen in a video posted on the celebrity news and gossip Web site TMZ.com rapping that Kobe couldnt do without me. ONeal skewers the Lakers star, with whom he won three straight NBA titles from 2000-2002 while with Los Angeles, for not being able to win a championship without him. I was freestyling. Thats all. It was all done in fun. Nothing serious whatsoever, ONeal told ESPN.com Monday. A call to the Suns on Tuesday seeking comment from ONeal was referred to his public relations firm, which didnt immediately respond. Arpaio, who describes himself as Americas Toughest Sheriff and is best known for feeding jail inmates green bologna, clothing them in pink underwear, and making them work on chain gangs, said he didnt expect his actions would teach Shaq a lesson. But he hoped he learns that as a role model who wants to someday be a full-time sheriff, he needs to know his words matter. Maybe Im old fashioned, but I dont think that either conduct should be out there publicly, even if media wasnt there, Arpaio said. ONeal previously served as a reserve officer with the Miami Beach Police Department while playing for t

Jamaica named among top five destinations

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

FOR the savvy and budget-conscious traveller, Jamaica may be the best place to get away without breaking the bank this summer. Smartertravel.com recently cited Jamaica as one of the top five destinations for summer travel bargains.

Travellers will reap the benefits of great deals offered by a variety of providers on the island. Orbitz.com, CheapCaribbean.com and Sandals Resorts are all looking to lure tourists during the summer season.

This latest praise adds to a long list of accolades recently awarded to the island. Among them Best Caribbean Destination at the Travel Weekly Readers' Choice Award; Sandals being voted Best All-Inclusive Resort at Travel Weekly's 2008 Globe Travel Awards; Montego Bay being selected by ASTA as one of the Top 10 International Hot Spots in the city category for Summer 2008; and Ocho Rios chosen as Best Destination in Latin America/Caribbean by Trip Advisor in the 2008 Travellers' Choice Destinations Awards.

"As we work to build and enhance our tourism product, it's exciting to see our progress reflected in the all-important opinions of consumers. We feel truly honoured by this new review, which confirms what many travellers already know - Jamaica is indeed a hot destination," director of tourism Basil Smith said.

A UFO expert says the latest reported sighting over a military base in Shropshire should be enough to prompt a formal inquiry into Britain's airspace security.

Nick Pope, who used to work for the Ministry of Defence's UFO project, has viewed recent footage filmed by a soldier at the Tern Hill barracks and said "it's all getting very interesting".

It follows a series of UFO sightings across Wales last week.

In one incident, a police helicopter was forced to swerve sharply as it was apparently 'buzzed' by a strange craft.

"This all started off with a near miss between an object and a police helicopter on June 8," Mr Pope said.

"Now it's transpired that at the same time there were other UFO sightings being reported around the country.

"This lends weight to the fact that there does seem to be something odd going on in our airspace."

Mr Pope said a formal inquiry should be launched by the MoD and the Civil Aviation Authority.

"All this clearly illustrate that there are flight safety issues," he said.

"I have seen three separate videos - all were interesting.

"The fact that this latest one was shot by military personnel shows the seriousness of this incident.

"The report from the soldiers will be on its way to Whitehall and the way forward now will be they (the MoD) should interviewing witnesses and examining civil and military radar."

He added that any hoax or mock-up by military personnel would be a disciplinary offence - and therefore less likely to happen.

"I've seen another video which showed a craft with a diameter of, I would estimate, several hundred metres, hanging silently over people's heads," he said.

"It was a clear breach of UK air security. So I think something is going on here."

youngbuck.jpgPerforming alone on stage to his previous hits like "Shorty Wanna Ride," the former G-Unit rapper appeared to surprise fans after an audience member screamed "G-Unit, n*gga!" as he quickly responded to the shout-out.

"F*ck G-Unit, n*gga, I'm gonna give you what you really wanna hear, 'cause Florida n*ggas wanna really know what the f*ck really be going on with Buck," Buck replied.

Rather than going in to his next song, Buck decided to speak for nearly two minutes explaining the controversy that began immediately following his royalty check statements he made against 50 Cent earlier this year.

"When I made the statement, 'I ain't ever seen no royalty check,' I didn't say that sh*t saying that the n*gga 50 done took money from me or none of that whole sh*t. Or that the n*gga owe - I said it 'cause it's real," he affirmed. "And when I say sh*t, I mean the sh*t. He took it in a different way. I guess the n*gga felt like I'm airing out family business or whatever."

Instead of stopping there, Buck continued to air out the head of G-Unit by comparing his street credibility to his own.

"He feel like he got a whole lot 'til the n*gga hit rock bottom and he got to crawl his a** back up," he said. "The difference between me and a motherf*cking 50 Cent is that I could hit the gutter-[and] I can get back in the streets. He couldn't go back-[or] do the same."

Before preparing to perform "Stay Fly," Buck promised the crowd that he was only going to focus on himself and if anyone does business with the Cashville star, it better be sincere and not just a handshake.

NEW YORK - Add an extra zero to the ranks of the millionaires club.

The number of people around the world with at least $1 million in assets passed 10 million for the first time last year, according to a new report. And their bank accounts are growing even faster.

The c****ined wealth of the globe's millionaires grew to nearly $41 trillion last year, an increase of 9 percent from a year before, Merrill Lynch & Co. and consulting firm Capgemini Group said Tuesday.

That means their average wealth was more than $4 million, the highest it's ever been. Home values were not included in asset totals.

"The growth of their wealth is outpacing the growth of their population, and that's a trend that's going to continue in coming years," said Ileana Van Der Linde, a principal with Capgemini.

The ranks of the wealthy are growing fastest in the developing economies of India, China and Brazil. The number of millionaires in India grew by about 23 percent.

The United States still reigns supreme when it comes to fat wallets, though: One in every three millionaires in the world lives in America. C****ined, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America account for just one in 10.

All told, there were about 600,000 more millionaires in the world in 2007 than in 2006, for a total of about 10.1 million. That's a 6 percent increase from the previous year.

Ten million may seem like a big number for such an elite club, but it still represents less than one-fifth of 1 percent of the world's 6.7 billion people.

The rarefied group of the superrich those with at least $30 million in assets got richer, too. There were 103,000 of them around the world last year, 9 percent more than the year before, and their wealth grew by nearly 15 percent.

The 600,000 new millionaires was unsurprising to Brian Bethune, an economist with Global Insight, who said inflation and the expansion of the world economy accounts for the growth.

Besides, $1 million isn't what it used to be. One million dollars in 1996, the first year the report was issued, would have been worth about $1.3 million last year, Van Der Linde said.

Steady growth powered economies worldwide in the first half of 2007, but more mature markets were hammered in the second half by the U.S. housing and credit crises. Emerging economies were largely unaffected, the report found.

The downturn started catching up with emerging economies in the beginning of 2008, Van Der Linde said.

Already, the report found, the millionaires club wasn't expanding as fast as before. From 2005 to 2006, the group swelled by more than 8 percent. The club has grown every year since the report was started.

Because of the economic slowdown, the wealthy tended to shift their money to safer investments such as bonds and money-market savings accounts, and away from less stable investments such as real estate, the report found.

Cash deposits and fixed-income securities accounted for 44 percent of the assets of the world's millionaires, up from 35 percent in 2006.

The wealth of the world's richest is projected to reach almost $60 trillion by 2012, the report said.

London Mayor's Aide Quits After Comment on Caribbean Immigrants

| Blo****erg News 7:59 AM EDT, June 24, 2008

London Mayor Boris Johnson said his political adviser, James McGrath, resigned after saying in an interview that Caribbean Londoners who opposed Johnson's election should return to their homelands.

``His remarks in a conversation with an Internet journalist, published this weekend, made it impossible for him to continue,'' Johnson said in an e-mailed statement yesterday. ``James is not a racist'' and his comment ``was taken out of context and distorted,'' the mayor said.

The departure of McGrath is a first for the new administration led by Johnson, a Conservative former member of Parliament and a newspaper columnist. Johnson defeated two-term incumbent Ken Livingstone, a member of Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour Party, in a May 1 election.

In an interview published on the Web site the-latest.com, McGrath was asked about the ``bad press'' Johnson was getting in two of the city's black newspapers, New Nation and the Voice, and whether his election might trigger an exodus from London of older Caribbean immigrants.

``Well, let them go if they don't like it here,'' McGrath said, according to the account on the-latest.com.

Johnson has apologized for a 2002 Daily Telegraph newspaper column in which he referred to Africans as ``piccaninnies'' in a piece that mocked then-Prime Minister Tony Blair's visit to Africa.

The Labour group in the city's legislative assembly criticized Johnson's handling of the resignation.

``You have to question Boris Johnson's judgment first in appointing someone with these views and second by only acting against him when pressured to do so,'' the group said today in an e-mailed statement.
