Hard to believe anything other than luck and maybe fate, never mind a book, can make someone fall in love with you, but oddly enough, Leil Lowndes seems to offer the advice that can do just that in How to Make Anyone Fall in Love with You. The sensation of falling in love comes from a chemical secreted by the nervous system, phenylethylamine (or PEA, as Lowndes calls it, as in Scientists tell us only PEA-brained people fall in Love), and the trick is to trigger the manufacture of PEA in your potential love partner, giving him or her the sensation of being in love. Lowndes offers 85 techniques for Hunters and Huntresses to capture their Quarry. Much of what the book offers is common sensethe power of eye contact and complimentsbut its presented in a new way and with such detail that it seems that it cant help but work.
Following some of her advice will have you treading that fine line between nice and obsequious, and at times, this book may sound offensive to some, advising the reader to play what may sound like games. Lowndes is aware of this, and she offers some caveats, but still it is hard to get past advice such as, Show him youre smart, but remembernot too smart or Watch your Quarrys reactions to outside stimuli, then show the same emotions. In all fairness, Lowndes doesnt play favorites: her advice to men and women can be equally appalling. Yet, the relaxed style of this book, presenting solid wisdom with a bit of scientific support, makes this book appealing, and, who knows, maybe it will make you more appealing, too! Jenny Brown

Although violence has declined in some of St James' traditional hot spots, the parish has now registered more than 100 murders since the start of this year.
The unenviable threshold was crossed last weekend when the parish registered three murders. Since then, three more persons have been killed, bringing the seven-month tally to 104. A record 188 persons were murdered in St James last year.
The latest killing occurred shortly after 10: 30 a.m. on Tuesday at a car wash in Rose Mount, Montego Bay. It is reported that a car pulled up at the establishment and its occupants opened fire on 26-year-old Keno Berry of a Salt Spring address killing him on the spot. Another man was shot and injured in the same incident.
The recent spate of murders in St. James, which include last Saturday's gruesome machete slaying of 28-year old Sasha Houston and her eight-year old daughter, Whitney Nelson, in the Salt Spring area, comes in the wake of a new initiative by the St James police to step up their war on crime.
Zero tolerance
"We will be taking a zero tolerance approach to every single offence," Superintendent McGregor stated in a recent Gleaner interview. "You will be seeing more persons being arrested for knives, ganja smoking, the stealing of electricity and just about every other offence."
While acknowledging that the police were enjoying relative success in calming down traditional hot spots like Flankers, Norwood and Canterbury, Superintendent McGregor said the police were concerned about the increase in criminality in other areas such as Granville, Anchovy and Farm Heights.
We're concerned about the situation in these areas but we will be going after criminals with a view of restoring order," Supt. McGregor said. "We will not be letting up until law and order is restored in all these communities."
However, it would appear that residents in some communities are becoming increasingly impatient with the police and in one case has chosen to take the law into its own hands. Last Saturday, Albert 'Riot' Clarke, one the suspects in the murder of Ms Houston and her daughter, was beheaded by residents, who claimed they had become tired of being plagued by him.
St James has consistently averaged over 100 murders per year for the last four years. Despite numerous new crime-fighting initiatives and changes in the police hierarchy, the killings have continued unabated, especially in the squatter areas.
Reggae Sumfest is set to hit the shores of Montego Bay in a few days and many may consider it the premier event of the summer. However the Doctor Beenie has his own agenda and will be unleashing another staging of his signature summer party 'Summer Sizzle' with a brand new name and a line-up that could rival Sumfest. The event has been renamed to 'Beenie Sizzle' and so far boast an impressive cadre of confirmed acts. When 876radio.com contacted his booking agency 'Khool Bookings' they informed us that they are still in negotiation with international rap stars Soulja Boy and Lil' Wayne as their inclusion could significantly boost the strong local roster of acts they currently have. Some of the confirmed acts so far are the fire man Capleton, Sizzla, Aidonia, Mavado, Elephant Man and Vybz Kartel. The unconfirmed list includes, Warrior King, Jah Cure, Ninja Man, T.O.K, Voicemail, Queen Ifrica, Mr Vegas and Assassin amongst others. The two biggest surprise on the list is Bounty Killer's Protege Mavado and Beenie's now estranged wife D'Angel who hopefully will give her confirmation soon, but kudos must be given to the Doctor as this is a clear sign that the two are certainly trying to resolve their differences and create an amicable environment for all. Will she perform alongside the Doctor, that is the unanswered question on everyone's lips. The show is set to kick off on August 6th at the Jamalco Sports Club in Clarendon and promises to be a crowd pleaser that will be closed by the Dancehall doctor himself |

Dear Pastor,
My wife and I have been married for four years now and she is Jamaican. I was born in England and I also have Jamaican citizenship. I have three children, the eldest is 19 and I pay a lot of money to the Child Support Agency for child support for them, even though the children's mothers earn far more than me.
Anyway, a family member back home was killing her for money, and I helped to bring him to the United Kingdom (UK). Since then, he has become wild and very lazy and got a girl of 15 pregnant. She just had his baby and he is 18. Due to this and other members of her family, we have separated. They kept saying that her elderly mother, who is deaf and ill, needs money for all sorts of treatment, and other family members are also begging money. There are eight other siblings. She is very weak to their demands and this has caused a rift between us. I was so fed up that I had an affair and fathered a child, but my wife doesn't know.
My wife was in England illegally so I married her in 2003 because she had overstayed her time by six months. Her cousin told her about a lawyer, who turned out to be bogus, took her money and did some paperwork and sent them to the Home Office, and she was not granted permission to stay in England. She was working and she had an argument with her boss, which resulted in immigration officers and police arresting her at work. She is now in a UK prison, looking at a 12-18 month prison sentence and deportation for working illegally. She was working in her name with her own National Insurance (NI) number, but had false work permits.
Pastor, what should I do? She has a lawyer, who seems good, but she will be deported or imprisoned. She claims to have enough money to buy a house back home and maybe to run a small business. I have land, which I could build on and own a house in London. I'm confused. I don't really want to leave the children, and, at the same time, I want a fresh start. I would need my own money to start something bigger with her. What should I do, sir? Would she listen to me about her family or let them bleed us dry? I know what she did was wrong, but she was waiting to get permission to work.
It's really unfair that Jamaica is a Commonwealth country and, here in the UK, we have thousands of eastern Europeans coming over here, who can't speak a word of English, who can claim benefits and work without a problem. She was not selling drugs or defrauding the State. She worked hard and paid taxes and NI from her wages, even though she had used false documention to get the job.
What would you do if u were in this situation?

Mark Beard was discovered with several stab wounds outside the house.
Nottinghamshire Police launched a murder inquiry and have arrested a Nottingham man, who is also 25.
Portia average Opposition leader gets mixed rating on job performance |
Observer/Don Anderson Poll Friday, July 11, 2008 |
More Jamaicans believe that Portia Simpson Miller is doing an average job as opposition leader than those who give her performance a positive rating, according to the latest Observer/Don Anderson Poll.
But 22 per cent of the 1,000 Jamaicans polled islandwide between June 25 and July 2 have given Simpson Miller a negative rating, with some respondents complaining that she is too critical and pushy.
"It is generally easier to rate an incumbent than it is to rate a party or individual in Opposition," said Anderson. "This fact is borne out in the significant number of persons who could definitively rate the performance of the leader of the Opposition."
According to the poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus three per cent, 48 per cent of the persons interviewed felt that Simpson Miller's performance was average - neither good nor bad.
"Where answers were given on either the positive or negative level, she had a marginal positive difference in her performance rating," said Anderson.
"Twenty-nine per cent overall gave her a positive rating," added the pollster, who noted that Simpson Miller's strongest support came from males, persons in the 25-44 age group and from the lower socio-economic group.
"Seven per cent overall feel that she is doing a very good job," said the poll.
The factors that condition Simpson Miller's 29 per cent positive rating include:
. 44 per cent who feel she is working for and showing interest in the poor;
. 14 per cent who feel she is doing a good job as opposition leader;
. 10 per cent who consider that she is trying her best; and
. nine per cent who feel she is being very vocal in Opposition.
Simpson Miller created history in February 2006 when she became the first woman president of a major political party in Jamaica after a bruising battle against her People's National Party colleagues Dr Peter Phillips, Dr Omar Davies and Dr Karl Blythe.
After she was sworn in as Jamaica's first woman prime minister on March 30, 2006, she rode a wave of popularity that rose to as high as 75 per cent, as many Jamaicans saw in her an opportunity for change.
However, her popularity started to dip some months later after she told worshippers at a church service that she was anointed by God to rule and her supporters created deeper division in the party by trying to have some of her opponents replaced as candidates.
Her stridency on the hustings was used against her by the then Opposition Jamaica Labour Party in the 2007 general election campaign, and no doubt contributed to Simpson Miller leading the PNP to its first defeat in 18 years, albeit by only four seats.
Since the September elections, Simpson Miller has been very vocal in Opposition, a fact that has won her praise (as highlighted above) as well as criticism.
According to the poll, the factors that condition this negative rating of Simpson Miller can be itemised as follows:
. 16 per cent feel that she criticises and opposes too much;
. 16 per cent see her as too pushy;
. 14 per cent feel that she has done nothing positive;
. 13 per cent feel she needs to be more professional;
. 13 per cent do not see her as effective; and
. 12 per cent do not think she is co-operating with the prime minister.
An officer cleaning the car at a patrol station Wednesday discovered the nearly 50 pounds of cocaine carefully hidden in hydraulically controlled compartments.
"These compartments have recently been more and more popular with drug operations," said Deputy Chief Julian Bernal, commander of the narcotics division.
Dallas police put the two-door 2004 black Infiniti into police service on May 7 after seizing it at a drug house. It had been found at a drug house earlier this year along with a 1999 Honda.
Bernal said the narcotics division searched both the vehicles and found nothing unusual after the seizure. The Honda was sold at auction.
Bernal said police plan to contact the person who bought the Honda to find out if drugs are hidden in that car, too. And, they are also trying to find out who owned the cocaine they have been secretly driving around with.
INTERNET search giant Google are taking new, street-level shots of British homes.
Their Street View project, a follow-up to the popular Google Earth, will let anyone view your home on the net closer up than ever before.
Google wont say when their new service will go live but their spy cars with cameras have been spotted around the country. Security experts fear Street View will help burglars plan their next job. Your car, alarms and locks will all be visible as well as garden access points.
Here ex-burglar RICHARD TAYLOR, who fronted BBC show To Catch A Thief, explains why criminals are rubbing their hands with glee.
THIS is nothing less than a burglars paradise.
Anyone who wants to burgle your house will be able to plan everything on their laptop at home in the evening.
The internet is already a wonderful tool for criminals.
For example, distraction burglaries where a burglar cons their way into a house are greatly helped by making replica ID cards with police badges downloaded from police force websites.
On my iPhone I can get Google Maps, which show back gardens. These would be an enormous help if I wanted to burgle someone because I could check out escape routes. Until recently it was only the military who had access to such information. Then it became available on laptops and home computers.
But now Google Street View will make the internet many times more useful to burglars and, thanks to 3G technology, people will be able to get it on their mobile phones.
The big thing when I was planning a burglary was working out how to get away. If the police turned up on foot or by car I wanted to know how I was going to escape before the helicopter arrived.
Basically, you knew if the police helicopter got there before you got away, there was a 90 per cent chance of being caught.
Street View will also be great for those who steal cars on demand. Those in the loop know theres a list of high-powered sports vehicles and other cars in demand.
Street View will show thieves where such cars are parked overnight and give them a good idea of what sorts of locks, on gates etc, they need to deal with.
There are people who travel the country selling info to burglars. Street View will help give them more information.
If I were planning a burglary, Street View is the first tool I would use. You cannot overestimate how big this will be for criminals
Word on the street is that ZJ Liquid is being threatened because he has not had any action taken against him in the role he played in the now infamous Milk sex footage that has been downloaded and disseminated across the Internet since it broke last week.
Somebody called the station to say that Liquid should not be on air if Milk cannot be on air. At first, this wasnt taken too seriously, but a vehicle was seen driving up and down the street outside the ZIP station, however the security guard failed to get the licence number of the vehicle, one source told one876entertainment yesterday.
It is not clear whether the threat has been reported as attempts to speak to Milk or Liquid proved futile. Both parties have repeatedly said, however, that they want to move on with their lives as the act took place between two consenting adults in the privacy of their bedroom. In the meantime, the fallout from the footage continues to mushroom. Milk did not appear on her regular slot on CVM TV's Hitlist last week Saturday and she is also expected to miss today's taping of the show. She had been on 'administrative leave' when the incident broke but returned to work on Monday of this week.
An screen name once connected to animated TV dad Homer Simpson is being used to spread malware.
In a 2003 episode of The Simpsons, writers revealed that Homer's e-mail address was chunkylover53@aol.com. Prior to the episode's airing, the address was registered by one of the show's writers, who used it to answer hundreds of e-mails from Simpsons fans.
Years later, the chunkylover53 screen name has resurfaced, and it's now being used to distribute a trojan disguised as a Simpsons movie file.
According to FaceTime malware research director Chris Boyd, chunkylover53 is sending out auto-reply messages to users which promises a special exclusive episode of the show available for download. The link in the message leads to an executable file.
Upon launching the trojan, the user is presented with a fake error message which is followed by several real error messages and, finally, a blank screen. Upon restarting, the system will run noticeable slower and be prone to crashes.
Boyd found that the malicious payload delivered by the trojan includes a rootkit and remote control software which logs the user in a botnet. The malware was traced back to Kimya, a Turkish botnet which has been infecting machines for the last four months.
The researcher told vnunet.com that it was unclear whether the malware operators have taken control of the chunkylover AOL account, or simply registered the screen name as an instant messenger account. AOL did return a request for comment on the matter.
Though the malware is currently only being spread by the chunkylover53 user name, Boys warns that the botnet itself could easily be called on to launch a much larger malware attack in the future.
"For now, this is a good reminder to be cautious when randomly adding cool things seen on TV and film to your online applications," said Boyd.
"You can't always assume the person at the other end is entirely in control, or indeed, related to what you're looking for in the first place."
Kanye is the one in the industry who throws tantrums ... people [have] become use to it and we don't take things he says to personal - because he is like the Revenge of the Nerds" to me.
He is the one who wears full buttons ups Danny Terio style! I don't like tight jeans! I only like tight jeans on females and that comment is not just for Ye!
It seems like jeans are getting tighter and sneakers are getting bigger!
In an interview with New Yorks renowned hip-hop station Hot 97, Eminem confirmed that hes hard at work on new material, both as a solo artist and in collaboration with members of his Shady Records label.
Despite his camp denying the rumours that the rapper was working on a new album entitled "King Mathers," Eminem has announced he is hard at work on his first studio album in three years.
"Im always working Im always in the studio," he said. "It feels good right now, the energy of the label. For a while, I didnt want to go back to the studio ... I went through some personal things. Im coming out of those personal things [and] it feels good."
The rapper also said he has barely been out of the studio with most of the artists on the Shady Records roster and despite joking he would release the new album "tomorrow," there is currently no release date for the album.
Eminems last album was 2004s "Encore" which topped The Billboard 200 and Billboards Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. He also released a compilation album featuring the artists on his Shady Records label entitled "Eminem Presents : The Re-Up," which peaked at No. 2 on the same charts.
Fifty was asked "So what the hell is going on with Eminem ?", here is what he answered :
Hes got a new album coming. Hes not gonna tell people that, but hes making new music. Ive heard a few songs, and its hot. He wont tell nobody hes working on a new album, but Ill tell you : hes working on new music. And once he locks into it, like, This is my favorite shit, its gonna come out. Is it angry Em ? Wacky Em ? Both, says Fifty. The whole range. You know, Michael Jordan was supposed to play basketball. Floyd Mayweather was meant to box. And Eminem was meant to rap.
"It's such grief and aggravation," said Frederick Smalls, an insurance broker in Whitman, Mass., after spending two hours on the phone with apple and AT&T Inc., trying to get his new iPhone to work.
In stores, people waited at counters to get the phones activated, as lines built behind them. Many of the customers had already camped out for several hours in line to become among the first with the new phone, which updates the one launched a year ago by speeding up Internet access and adding a navigation chip.
A spokesman for AT&T, the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S., said there was a global problem with Apple's iTunes servers that prevented the phones from being fully activated in-store, as had been planned.
Instead, employees are telling buyers to go home and perform the last step by connecting their phones to their own computers, spokesman Michael Coe said.
However, the itunez servers were equally hard to reach from home, leaving the phones unusable except for emergency calls.
The problem extended to owners of the previous iPhone model. A software update released for that phone on Friday morning required the phone to be reactivated through iTunes.
I was in a relationship with a man with whom I thought I would spend the rest of my life, but then I discovered that he went to Jamaica and had sexual relations with his 'cousin'. They both claim that they are not *lo** relations so they have done nothing wrong, but I believe they are too close to have any kind of relationship. She is his sister's (from his father's side) cousin, so if they were to have children, they would call his sister both auntie and cousin.
The Bible says, "None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him to uncover their nakedness." How can this woman who claims to be a churchgoing Christian justify what she is doing with her cousin? And also, how can this same woman abort a child conceived during these relations without feeling she has sinned? Pastor, I pray for them both to see what they are doing is wrong, not only in man's eyes, but also in God's eyes.
D.T., London, England
Dear D. T.,
Strange, you are attacking the young woman and not the man. Shouldn't the man be responsible, too? I wouldn't encourage this type of relationship. But this man cannot be excused and the young woman condemned.
PastorI was in a one-year relationship. Like every couple, we had our differences, but we got along very well. Apart from his being jealous and controlling, I must say I felt loved.
It was a relationship where we spent most of our time around each other, rain, snow or shine. We didn't live together, but all that and more was in the making. Anyway, he left for Jamaica in the summer for a month and it turned into two months. He claimed that his reason for staying so long was that he didn't get to finish up what he went to do. I noticed that he didn't call. And when I tried calling him, sometimes he answered and sometimes he didn't. He told me not to waste my money buying cards to call him.
Being the detective that I am, I investigated and found out some disturbing things about him. He cheated on me with a 16-year-old and contracted an STD which he found out he had after going to Jamaica. He did an STD test before going and I got the results while he was in Jamaica. I thank God that I did not contract it. He still doesn't know that I found out about the girl because I didn't want to give away my source, one of his websites.
He came back after two months acting like I had done him wrong and he wouldn't even touch me. Things were so different. He told me that he had got back together with his ex-girlfriend in Jamaica. I cried myself to sleep that and many nights after because I love this man so much. I was there for him financially, mentally and physically for a whole year.
After telling me he had gone back to her, he still wanted to come around, sleep at my house, eat my food and have the nerve to still want sex from me. Being the person that I am and the feelings that I still had for him, I had sex with him.
He said that we can still be friends and when I started to get comfortable with him again, I asked him what it was that he wanted from me. He told me a relationship. So I asked what happened to the girl in Jamaica and he replied that things had not changed on that front. I asked him if he was using me and he couldn't answer. So I told him not to come around as often and not to call as often, but I can't control myself when it comes to him. I can't believe it. We were to get married this year and now I'm heartbroken.
Please, pastor, tell me what to do.
L.C., New York, USA
Dear L.C.,
This guy knows that you are not serious. When you say no, you don't mean no. He can do anything and get away with it. He is a user. You know it, but you are behaving as if you like being used. When you get to a place where you love yourself, you will drop this man. Right now, you love him more than yourself.
PastorD'Angel seems to be busily 'sprucing up' her stage performance, apparently in preparation for her first performance in the upcoming Reggae Sumfest Festival.
So far this month, July 4 and 6, 2008, D'Angel performed for the grand opening of Club Amazon in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth and the Portland Jerk Festival respectively.
D'Angel had Club Amazon exceeding its 500 capacity by the time she made her 1:00pm entrance. She mingled with the crowd until her 3:00pm performance time. "It was very good to see D'Angel showing up early and taking time out to chill with the audience." a promoter of Amazon Productions said.
She wooed the audience with a spectacular performance and made them even more frenzied when she brought on Vybz Kartel, who performed his latest hits.
Her performance at Portland Jerk Festival was just as exciting as she had the crowd clamouring for more as she performed her anthology of hits.

Bembe Thursday, the 'hype' dancehall event staged each Thursday at Weekenz in Kingston, Jamaica has become a global phenomenon in less than two years.
The idea for Bembe originated when former Stone Love selector, Richie Feelings, jokingly told his friends that he is a bembe marble and staged a dance of the same name.
As Jigsy, a member of the Bembe Squad explained, "A bembe marble is one of those big marbles, so Feelings said that he was bembe marble. The owner of Weekenz approached Richie to do a weekly event at his spot so he (Richie) linked us up and we decided to do it and call it Bembe Thursday. At first we took it as a joke - we never dreamed that it would get so big.
Feelings also invited selectors Razz and Biggy, Jigsy and Penny Bling to form the Bembe Squad. In a very short time it became the place to be on a Thursday night in the capital city. "People from all over started to attend, by midnight the place is normally jam packed." Jigsy said.
"Bembe is for the girls, still we have a ratio of 10 -1 on a weekly basis and we play just vibes music; all kind of music to suit everyone."
From the onset, Bembe Thursday has always been an early event with the vibes increasing by 10 pm and ending at 2 am. "We only go later when we have a special event like a birthday party or something," Jigsy said.
The event has become so popular that presently it has spread across the various continents. "It global right now, you have Bembe in England on a Friday, Bembe Wednesday in Japan, Bembe Thursday in Cayman and Miami, Bembe Sunday in Canada and even in Australia they have Bembe."
Asked how the Bembe Squad manages to play at so many events, Jigsy said, "We basically rotate among ourselves. Both locally and overseas, we go to the other countries when they are having (a) special event.
Most of the top artistes pass through Bembe Thursday, as well as top selectors including: Coppershot, Chromatic, ZJ Liquid and Bun Bun.
Jisgy disclosed that Bembe will be on fire this summer, "It will be just crazy vibes. We will be having some big events including my birthday party on August 7, 2008.

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland - Jamaica's medal hunt at the 12th IAAF World Junior Championships (WJC) continues on today's fourth day at the Zawisza stadium here in Bydgoszcz after a good showing yesterday.
Three Jamaicans qualified for their respective finals today, while two others, sprint hurdlers Shermaine Williams and Natasha Ruddock, cruised into the semis of the 100m event set for this afternoon.
Intermediate hurdler Nikita Tracey and 200m sprinters Jura Levy and Nickel Ashmeade are through to their finals which will be run in the afternoon session here.
As if inspired by Dexter Lee's golden run in the men's 100m a day earlier, the Jamaicans had a good day, mixed with some misfortunes as injuries continued to plague the team.

In addition to the hospitalisation of high jumper Misha-Gay DaCosta over the weekend for a non track related illness, several members have come down with injuries, which have affected the team's performance.
Among the injured are Andre Peart, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, Antonique Campbell and intermediate hurdler Shana-Gay Tracey.
Technical head of the delegation Jerry Holness told the Observer yesterday that despite the injuries he thought the team did very well and they were expecting to add to the one medal won so far.
"I think we had a good day. We have finalists in both 200m and the 400m hurdles and we have two very experienced runners in the 100m hurdles, so we are happy and confident that we will win some more medals tomorrow (today)," he told the Observer.
It was not all smooth sailing, however, as among those going down with injuries were 400m hurdler Tracey, who pulled up mid-way her semi-final race after the recurrence of a hamstring injury.
The injured muscle had kept her out of the National Junior Trials in mid-June, but she was passed fit to compete at the event and was an easy second in her first round heat on Wednesday.
She was, however, walking around later in the afternoon and said she was pain-free, but it was still touch and go whether she would take part in the heats of the 4x400m relays on Saturday.
Tracey, who is yet to win a single 400m hurdles race this season, will be the Jamaican standard bearer in this afternoon's 400m final after placing third in 57.84 seconds in the first semi-final.
Tracey, who will extend a brilliant run by Michael Dyke-coached athletes at the WJC, had run a personal best 57.58 seconds in the first round on Wednesday and told the Observer that she "felt good and was expecting to make it to the final".
The 17-year-old, who is the third straight Edwin Allen student to qualify for the final of the 400m hurdles at the WJC, said she was thrown off her rhythm on the back stretch after "shuffling between the hurdles", but said she will be fine for the final.
Today she will run out of lane eight in the final.
Levy, the Girls Champs Class Two 100m champion looks in good form, despite complaining about a niggling lower back injury, and was second in her semi-final heat in 23.92 seconds to get an automatic qualifying spot.
Her time was the slowest of all the qualifiers, which was led by Grenada's Canada-based Janelle Redhead's 23.47 seconds.
Levy, who had won her preliminary race in 23.82 seconds earlier in the day, said time was not important. "I was just running to make it from one stage to the next and right now I am in the final."
Jamaica's other entrant, US-based Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, was third in her qualifying heat in 24.12 seconds and qualified for the semi-finals, but was advised by the team doctor to sit out due to a niggling hamstring injury.
Ashmeade, the Boys Champs and CARIFTA Games champion, won both his races in 20.86 and 20.83 seconds, respectively, and looked easy in both, although he said his start in the semi-finals was not that good.
World Youth 200m gold medallist Ramone McKenzie, who lost his battle to get race fit after suffering an ankle injury in April, had no excuses after finishing last in his semi-final.
He struggled in the first round, advancing as one of the fastest losers after finishing third in his race in 21.5 seconds before trailing in with a 21.60-second time.
The sprint hurdlers, Williams and Ruddock, both US-based, cruised through their heats, both finishing second for automatic qualifying spots to the semi-finals set to be run at 5:05 pm (10:05 am Jamaica time).
Williams, the world leader who questioned her lane eight draw, ran 13.38 seconds to finish behind the Belarusian Alina Talai, who ran a personal best 13.34 seconds.
Ruddock's 13.73 seconds saw her finish behind Cuba's Belkis Milanes, who also had a personal best 13.62 seconds, and will run in the third of three semi-final heats.
Sandals dismisses report of legal battle with NEPA Sandals insists it did nothing wrong |
Friday, July 11, 2008 |
Sandals Resorts yesterday rubbished a news report that a legal battle was brewing between the hotel chain and the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) over approval for additional construction at one of its hotels.
At the same time, the resort chain made clear that it had complied with NEPA's work stoppage order, while saying that it needed clarification as the environment agency and the St James Parish Council were "operating at cross purposes".
"The application for a building permit for the construction and refurbishment at Sandals Royal together with all fees were submitted to the St James Parish Council from July 2007," Sandals said in a statement issued to the media.
"The St James Parish Council told Sandals to proceed with the development works in a letter dated December 21, 2007 which states, '.wish to advise that the National Environment and Planning Agency has recommended approval in Outline for the proposed development subject to the Statutory Reserved matter of your submitting to the St James Parish Council fully illustrated drawings in respect of Siting, Design, the means of access and external appearance of the buildings to be erected. Your having made such submission to the Council, you may proceed to commence the development works consistent with the illustrated drawings submitted"," the statement said.
Sandals also said that it complied with the St James Parish Council's requirement to advise the superintendent of roads and works three clear days before the commencement of the construction work and it was on that basis that the hotel began work at the site in January 2008.
However, in May 2008, Sandals said it was advised by NEPA that an environmental permit was required, to which the hotel responded within 10 days with an application. "We were therefore shocked to receive a warning letter on June 30, 2008," said Sandals. "Nevertheless, we have complied and have stopped the work."
Added Sandals: "The matter which really needs clarification is how and with what sense of urgency do connected Government agencies communicate with each other. It appears to us in this case that NEPA and the St James Parish Council are operating at cross purposes."
The hotel said that the renovation and construction works were being carried out strictly in accordance with the plans that were submitted for a three-storey building and insisted that it had done nothing wrong as it followed a clear, written direction from the St James Parish Council to proceed.
"We wish to resume work and finish the development, so we will continue to work assiduously with both agencies to get this matter resolved," the hotel said.
Derail that trick, Madam Chief Justice |
Friday, July 11, 2008 |
Are we to understand that if Mr Lennox Swaby, one of the two men accused of murdering Mr Richard Lyn and his wife Mrs Julia Lyn almost two years ago, decides that he is going to take the court for a ride by firing attorney after attorney and consequently delaying his trial, there's nothing anyone can legally do about it?
And if this be the case, shouldn't someone somewhere be actively planning how to derail that trick before others catch on to it and plunge the already beleaguered justice system into a further mess?
Why is it acceptable for Mr Swaby, who along with Mr Calvin Powell is awaiting trial for the murder of the Lyns, to be in custody for one year and seven months, according to the story in yesterday's edition of this newspaper?
We cannot accept that human rights can justify this type of abuse of the court's processes.
No.
For while we accept that Mr Swaby has the right to an attorney of his choice, he cannot be allowed to keep changing representation without a rational explanation. It's just not fair to the Lyns, who were slaughtered and dumped - like animals - in a barrel on a landfill.
Indeed, this type of delay doesn't augur well for the justice system or anyone - the accused men included - in this country.
It simply makes a mockery of the system and bolsters the brazen resolve of the criminals among us to wreak havoc on the society.
According to Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Ms Lisa Palmer, there have been at least three case management conferences on the matter.
Is it that there is no room for the exercise of discretion during these conferences?
Or is this particular case simply indicative of poor management skills?
As we understand it, case management conferences were introduced a few years ago in an attempt to cut down on the backlog of cases that has been plaguing the justice system for decades. Yet, as Mr Winston Lawson, president of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce pointed out in yesterday's story, the court system is still in a mess. Clearly something is just not working!
Maybe if there was a greater obligation for accountability within the justice system, and indeed other systems of governance in this country, we would be spared horror stories like this one.
However, the truth of the matter is that the demon of procrastination has taken root in almost every aspect of our society.
And in this particular case we believe the chief justice has a moral obligation to do something.
We understand that her hands may be tied in some legal respects, but at the very least we expect her to ensure that every possible move is made to facilitate the speedy expedition of this case.
It is, after all, what being a leader is all about.
UTech gets US$5m in lab equipment |

THE University of Technology's (UTech) Faculty of Health and Applied Science has received lab equipment valued at US$5 million that is expected to enhance the institution's research and teaching capacity.
The donation was made available through the CAST-UTech Alumni Association Toronto Chapter, which sourced the equipment from the Johnson and Johnson's pharmaceutical company Pfizer.
The lab equipment include microscopes, fraction collectors, desiccators, digital density meters, spectrophotometer, grinder, analytical balances, sonicator, melting pot apparatus, rotary evaporator, separatory flask, hundreds of pipettes and beakers as well as specialised software, hardware and books.
"Development of students in this area requires highly specialised equipment. They are not things that we get easily on the market because they are custom-made," Dr Sarafadeen Abebayo, head of the School of Pharmacy and Health Science in the faculty, explained. "We will be able to analyse the quality of products in the market. We will be able to make products. Apart from that if you bring a plant to us, we can analyse it in the lab here. We will extract it and do something that we call activity guided fractionation, where we extract the plant, we test it, looking for specific compounds."
Dr Abebayo, who expressed his appreciation to the alumni for the valuable equipment, said the donation would also increase the school's ability to reach out to other companies.
Meanwhile, Trevor Miller, an alumnus from the Toronto chapter, said the equipment was secured after it was discovered that Pfizer was about to close one of its facilities in Toronto.
"They were either going to dump the equipment or find some other institution to donate it to," he said. "We hope that all the students will use the equipment as the root to becoming future scientists, so that they can be people who make Jamaica very proud."
The donation was also welcomed by UTech president, Professor Errol Morrison, who said that equipment would be valuable to the delivery of quality education and would also ensure that the students were using industry equivalent equipment.

A woman who launched an acid attack on a man while he was walking on Love Street, Jones Town, Kingston, is to be sentenced on July 22.
Carol Duhaney, 48, of Love Street, was convicted by a seven-member jury, yesterday, of causing grievous bodily harm.
Supreme Court Judge Bryan Sykes has ordered a social enquiry report for Duhaney.
The Crown, represented by Crown Counsel Joan Barnett, led evidence in the Home Circuit Court that on March 13, 2007, Duhaney threw a corrosive substance on Dennis Reid, of Jones Town.
Reid, whose face is badly scarred as a result of the acid attack, said he was walking on Love Street when Duhaney threw the substance in his face. He said he was hospitalised for three months and his sight had been affected.
He said three days before the acid attack, he and Duhaney's daughter had had a dispute. He said he kicked the daughter on her hand.
He later apologised to Duhaney for kicking her daughter. Duhaney said then that he was lucky that he was the person involved because had it been someone else that person would have got some black acid or a gunshot.
Reid said he was on his way from a shop when Duhaney threw the substance in his face.
Duhaney denied attacking Reid with the acid. She said she was in her house when Reid came into the yard with a bottle and said he was gong to throw acid on her daughter.
She said she tried to take the bottle from Reid. She said Reid fell to the ground during the wrestle for the bottle. The cover fell off the bottle and some of the liquid splashed on Reid while he was on the ground.
Under cross-examination, she said her daughter did not live with her and her daughter was not in the yard when Reid came there.
