Chris Brown Mom Feels Rihanna used Vodoo on her son.
We need to do some thorough investigation to find out if voodoo is a common practice in Barbados. It has now come to our understanding that Chris Brown's mom is worried that sexy Rihanna has been using voodoo on her son.
According to her the relationship is moving way too quickly, so she feels that Rihanna must have done something to make her son fall so deeply for her.
Well, if Rihanna has strong Caribbean *lo** running through her veins "she know weh fi do fi hold har man, She nuh need nuh voodooo fi do dat".
This is hilarious!
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The AIDS epidemic among African-Americans in some parts of the United States is as severe as in parts of Africa, according to a report out Tuesday.
"AIDS in America today is a black disease," says Phill Wilson, founder of the Black AIDS institute.
"Left Behind - Black America: A Neglected Priority in the Global AIDS" is intended to raise awareness and remind the public that the "AIDS epidemic is not over in America, especially not in Black America," says the report, published by the Black AIDS Institute, an HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on African-Americans.
"AIDS in America today is a black disease," says Phill Wilson, founder and CEO of the institute and himself HIV-positive for 20 years. "2006 CDC data tell us that about half of the just over 1 million Americans living with HIV or AIDS are black."
Although black people represent only about one in eight Americans, one in every two people living with HIV in the United States is black, the report notes.
The report uses just-released data from UNAIDS and existing CDC and Census data to highlight grim statistics:
AIDS remains the leading cause of death among black women between ages 25 and 34. It's the second-leading cause of death in black men 35-44.
In Washington, more than 80 percent of HIV cases are among black people, that's one in 20 residents. iReport: AIDS in Washington's older population
"Five percent of the entire population (in DC) is infected... that's comparable to countries like Uganda or South Africa," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN for the recent "Black in America" documentary.
According to this report, if black Americans made up their own country, it would rank above Ethiopia (420,000 to 1,300,000) and below Ivory Coast (750,000) in HIV population. Both Ethiopia and the Ivory Coast are among the 15 nations receiving funds from the President's Emergency Plan For Aids Relief. The United States has given about $15 billion to PEPFAR nations in the past five years.
The Black AIDS Institute says it's not criticizing the federal government for helping poorer countries cope with the AIDS epidemic. Rather, it's saying the "AIDS epidemic [in the U.S.] is not getting the kind attention that it merits."
"We understand the needs of black folk in Johannesburg (South Africa)," Wilson says. "Why can't we understand the needs of them in Jackson, Mississippi? We understand the needs in Nigeria or Botswana, why not understand the needs of Los Angeles or Oakland?"
Wilson says more needs to be done to prevent the spread of HIV in this country. The report states that the U.S. government "increased spending on HIV prevention, treatment and support programs for low-income countries dramatically, at the same time that domestic remained all but flat."
World-famous Rhoden speaks on classical music

Orrett Rhoden greets the audience at the beginning of his recital at the University of the West Indies, Mona Chapel on Sunday, April 22, last year.
Mark Dawes, Staff Reporter
On Sunday, May 18, Jamaica's world-famous concert pianist, Orrett Rhoden, will give a joint recital with violinist Preston Hawes in the Mona Chapel, at the University of the West Indies. The concert begins at 5:00 p.m.
Last week, Rhoden, 47, shared with The Sunday Gleaner perspectives on the growth and development of classical music in Jamaica and elsewhere.
The Sunday Gleaner: What can be done to popularise classical music to young people in Jamaica?
Rhoden: A great deal can be done through the schools. If we have music being taught in the schools from an early age, that will bring a new generation into experiencing classical music.
Also, I think the absence of Radio Mona has been a great loss. They played classical music from dusk till dawn. They had lunch hour concerts as well, which I thought was so wonderful. I thought we were really getting somewhere, you know, for a Caribbean country to have a radio station which played both classical and jazz music. They used to have a wonderful jazz programmes in the afternoon. Jazz to me a just as important as classical music. It bridges the gap between the pop music and classical music.
I am a bit disappointed in what I see on television in terms of music which has vulgarity lewdness. This I think is a development in the wrong direction. I have nothing against pop music. But I think that we should have more programmes on television, not necessarily classical. We could have for example, more semi-classicals and Latin American music.
Have you ever delved into the non-classical genre?
I did a concert once in the south of France where I extemporised with a group of reggae musicians. I was able to improvise on the spur of the moment, while they were playing jazz rhythms. It was a classical thing, with a reggae foundation.
What is required to be a classical pianist?
It is the most difficult profession >ever. It really is. In America, Europe and the far East, there is so much talent competing for so few opportunities. I think there are about 2,000 concert pianists out there on the market at the moment and they are all very good. You have to be clear about how much potential and talent you have. You have to be realistic. You don't want to got out there with just half of the requirements trying to compete with the others who are really way ahead. You really want to have talent, and personality, and the ability to compete with everybody else.
And you must have something to say musically. In my case, my angle has always been 'a concert pianist from the Caribbean/Jamaica'. As a child, I had influences from the popular music of the day, and at that time it was Bob Marley's music. I have a different approach to classical music. Although it is treating the music with respect and authentically using the music scores and not doing anything that is not on the printed page, I have my own interpretation towards the music and often critics have described me as "the Caribbean B****shell" and "Jamaica's ebullient answer to Vladimir Horowitz".
That is where I have made my niche. You have to have something new to offer, something new to say.
What do you mean by personality?
You don't want to be considered as lacking character. You must have some amount of flair. To be a carrier of the music to the public you have to have some idea of what you think the music is saying and then try to convert that into your own language.
How well are concert pianists paid?
It depends on your agent and who invites you to play and many other factors. I have my set fees when I am asked to play anywhere. Luckily, I have been able to eat.
What's right and wrong about how classical music is taught in Jamaica?
I think that a lot of the teachers that teach classical music apparently usually go into a exam for the students for the Associated Board exams of the Royal Schools of Music. I think that is good because it gives them some sort of standard to work with.
To say what is wrong, I think emphasis should be more on the classics and not on popular music. Classical music training is foundational for every other kind of music. I would like to see students performing more the works of the great masters.
Do you give master classes?
I give master classes. I have given a few here. I prefer to perform. I think I have a particular gift in that area in terms of communicating the audiences that I play to. That is how I inspire people, but not necessarily through teaching. It will inspire musicians to see that they too can get somewhere if they persevere and continue.
Who is Preston Hawes?
He is a genius. He is 25 and he is doing his doctorate in violin at Yale University. A lot of musicians can be very academic and dull and boring. He is not one of those. He has technique and he is a romantic performer and electrifying. I have known him for four years. He is the associate director of the New England Symphonic Ensemble. The concert is a warm-up for our appearance together at Carnegie Hall in September.
You have lived overseas for many years, where do you make your home now?
Right here in Jamaica. I live here. Whenever I have concerts I go and come back. I have been living here for 10 years, but I keep a very low profile. It is only recently that I have been going out to a lot of parties and things like that.
Which classical pianist do you really admire?
I have two people that I say have inspired me, Vladimir Horowitz and Maria Callas. My hero was Horowitz and I have no apologies to make. A lot people say he was a showman, it was his personality, he had something to say. In terms of the younger ones I also like pianists Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Daniel Barenboim.
Why do you include Maria Callas, she was a singer?
Well you have to sing at the piano to create a line. You have to mould the phrase in such a way. It is a synthesised version of what she was doing with the voice that I have sought to do with the piano. All good pianists have to sing at the piano. And it is very difficult to do. Maria Callas I think she was the greatest dramatic soprano of her time.
How has the classical music business changed since the time you entered it?
There are so many good people around now that it is difficult for a critic to go every concert and to rave about everything he hears because everyone is doing it.
What have you not yet done that you want to have done in your career?
I have been invited to South Africa and I hope to go there next year. I have already been to Carnegie Hall five times.
I do have a passion for film. I would be thrilled to do a documentary on my life, beginning with my start in music at the tender age of three and simply telling my story.
To many viewers it would seem quite unorthodox as Jamaica is most famous for its popular music. A serious Jamaican classical pianist would, however, have some interesting stories to tell and it is my goal to put Jamaica on the map by telling this unique story. I would use the documentary as the first part of the DVD and in the second part would see me performing in a live concert to a Jamaican audience.
I have always seen myself as an ambassador for my country and this film would be just another way of continuing the journey. It is my goal to market this DVD all around the world as I think the response would be immense. This could also tap into a new sort of tourism for our country bringing to our island a new and different set of people not yet tapped by tourism officials.
It is my idea to give Jamaica a sort of a facelift as we have been seen for a long time as a country riddled by violence and often show the crude side of our warm and generally friendly people.
We all want the best for our island and I think that classical music should be taught to our school children from the word go. Not only does it bring about a softer society, but it helps to build better brains.
How do you feel about the pianos in Jamaica?
Good question. Nobody in Jamaica who has heard me play in Jamaica has ever heard me play properly because of the lack of instrument. There isn't one decent Steinway in Jamaica. We need a proper instrument. Last year when I played in Carnegie Hall, the piano there was like a Rolls Royce - I could do anything I wanted. It would be nice to have one of those come down to Jamaica. But nobody has ever heard me play at that level as I play when I am overseas. We need a decent new Steinway.
You have a bias towards Steinway?
Well, I am a Steinway artiste.
You are signed with Steinway?
Steinway has a list of artistes that they have adopted as professional musicians and I am on that list.
Does that mean you wont play on any other brand of piano?
If I can avoid it, yes, I would not play on any other piano, but Steinway.
You have a 'moral contract' with Steinway?
Yes, I have a moral contract to play on Steinway. I think they make the best pianos.
When was the last time you did a concert in Jamaica?
Last year at the UWI Mona Chapel.
The ladies would want to know, is there a significant other?
I have a dear friend that I am very close to at the moment.
If you can stomach it take a look.......life F^^Up...life unfair even when u play fair.

Dear Pastor,
I am a guy of just 24 years old, not much life lived, but I feel like I have been living a long time because of the fact that I became a man too soon.
Play women like a gameI started out having sex at a very young age. I thought it was great that I could do that, but now I have a problem that I can't seem to get rid of. I can't find love, or should I say, I don't know how to love, or even if I can, I have become this person that only wants women for sex, and after I have got what I worked for, I keep moving on. I play women just like a game that I have played over and over again and know all the levels by heart, and they always fall for it.
Wanting new womenIn high school, I had girls in all grades, while I was just in first form. I have left Jamaica and this problem has followed me even here. I met a woman, who has been there for me for a long time, and I know she really cares for me, but I just can't stop wanting more new women. I treat her nicely and make her feel special, but that is how I treat every woman I talk to.
Pastor, I am miserable. I am not able to have one woman that I can say is truly mine and be faithful to her, but I am not in denial that I am addicted to sex. But the problem is, pastor, I am addicted to sex and new women. Please, help me.
P.K., Nassau, Bahamas
Dear P.K.,
Men who believe that they are sex addicts should seek psychotherapy. They are not just having a physical problem, but a mental disorder.
I therefore suggest that if you are serious about getting help, you ask your doctor to refer you to someone, who can go through the long process of therapy with you.
I must add that in the USA, there are support groups for sex addicts. I do not know if there are such groups in the Bahamas.
PastorPolice in the town of Three Rivers, Michigan think they've caught a joker in the act of committing a crime on a dark night.
It happened Monday when cops in the city near the Indiana border were called to a local movie theatre. Officials there told them someone was trying to steal posters and other items related to the new Batman movie - and that the culprit was clad in make-up to make him appear like the Joker, the character played in the film by the late Heath Ledger.
Incredulous cops arrived to find a man with white make-up on his face, a green wig on his head and wearing a purple suit, being restrained by employees who were holding him for police.
A 20-year-old named Spencer Taylor (top left, shown in and out of his alleged disguise in a police photo) is being held for larceny and malicious destruction of property. He'll be in court next week.
"The Dark Knight," the latest and some say the best of the Batman films, is well on its way to becoming the most successful motion picture of all time at the box office. It has already attracted a rabid fan base and collectors may be expecting to reap a small fortune from anything related to it - provided they come by it all honestly.
Photo courtesy: Three Rivers Police DepartmentA pastor of a church in rural Jamaica, who is also a supervisor at a boys home, has been charged with 30 counts of buggery, allegedly committed against boys at the institution.
The accused, who was originally charged with one count of buggery, appeared in the Richmond Resident Magistrate's court on Wednesday.
It was during the proceedings that it was revealed that other incidents had allegedly taken place between the accused and other boys at the institution.
After investigations, the pastor was slapped with 29 additional charges by the St Mary police.
The St Mary police confirmed that a man has been arrested and charged in relation to the allegations of buggery against children at the home but could not provide details.
The police said the accused has been remanded in custody and will return to court next Wednesday, July 30.
When contacted, Rasheda St Juste, communications officer at the Child Development Agency (CDA), which has responsibility for children who are in need of care and protection, said the CDA was aware of the latest charges that have been laid against the supervisor.
St Juste said the supervisor had been under investigation since March 2008 when the CDA reported a case of sexual abuse of a ward of the state to the police.
"The incident, which took place at the facility in February 2008, was reported to us by the victim himself," St Juste said in an e-mail response. "The CDA simultaneously began an investigation into the matter and reported the incident to the Office of the Children's Registry, as well as the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA). The manager has been on suspension since March when we made the report to the police. He was subsequently arrested, charged and released on bail."
St Juste said the child in the first case has been reintegrated with his mother and is receiving treatment from the CDA's clinical psychologist.
Twelve days before the start of the 29th Olympiad in Beijing, China, the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) has confirmed that a member of its team tested positive for a banned substance at the June 27-29 National Track and Field Championships.
"All I can tell you is yes, there was a positive one," JOA president Mike Fennell admitted to the Observer yesterday.
Fennell declined to name the athlete as he was yet to receive written confirmation he requested from the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), after a verbal confirmation. He said, however, that the athlete was not one of the country's big names.
Fennell said that confirmation from the Monaco-based IAAF, athletics' world governing body, was expected today, given the time difference between both jurisdictions.
According to the IAAF rule, once an athlete's 'A' sample is returned positive the national association is advised and the athlete has two weeks from that time to apply for his/her 'B' sample to be tested.
If that 'B' sample is returned positive, the athlete usually gets a two-year ban.
Yesterday, Fennell expressed disappointment that someone representing Jamaica went the route of cheating.
"I am extremely disappointed and not just (because of) our image, but given our objective and philosophy," (of competing clean) he said.
In recent months, fingers have been pointed at Jamaica, intimating that enough has not been done here to c****at doping.
A July 8 BBC article quoted Dr Adrian Lorde, head of the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (RADO), voicing concerns about the number of testing done in Jamaica, which is not a member of RADO.
"I would like to think they do that testing there, but I really don't know. I don't know what level of certification their doping control officers have. We really don't know what is going on in Jamaica," Dr Lorde said.
"I am concerned they don't have the programme in place they should have based on the amount of success they have," he added. There has been talk about a national anti-doping organisation in Jamaica for many years, but it is not functioning yet, as far as we can tell. I don't have any worries there are athletes in Jamaica who are cheating, but you only know if it's tested."
However, Fennell, who recently indicated that 96 tests (six out of competition) have been carried out on Jamaican athletes locally since the start of the year, said the fact that a positive test has been returned indicates that our system is working.
Last month's positive test is the second such case to have been caught by Jamaican authorities in the last four years. Sprinter Steve Mullings, who won the 200 metres at the 2004 Olympic trials, was banned for two years after testing positive for testosterone.
Other Jamaicans to have tested positive for using banned substances include sprinters Merlene Ottey (Nandrolone), Dwayne Jarrett and shot putter Dorian Scott (Marijuana), and long/triple jumper Suzette Lee (Salbutamol - used for the treatment of asthma, chronic bronchitis and other breathing disorders).
Ottey escaped being banned as her 'B' sample returned negative; while Scott and Lee received public warnings.
Two women in northern Ontario believe they've seen the stuff of legend first hand.
Helen Pahpasay and her mother were blueberry picking on July 22 about 25 kilometres north of Gra**y Narrows, a community northwest of Dryden, when they claim to have spotted a tall creature about 15 metres ahead.
"It looked about eight feet tall and it was upright," Pahpasay explained. "We were scared ... I had no idea what it was. It wasn't a bear or a moose. It was upright and walking."
The large creature darted into the bushes and the frightened women decided to head back to Gra**y Narrows. When they returned they told friends and family about what they'd seen. Pahpasay's brother, Randy Fobister, persuaded the women to go back to the scene of the reported sasquatch sighting to pick up any clues.
They claim to have found a massive six-toed footprint near a beaver pond. Fobister made a plaster cast of the print and has shipped it off to have it examined.
People in the community reported similar sightings years ago in an area north of Gra**y Narrows.
"I've been hearing about it since I was a kid, so when I got the chance close by here I jumped right on it," Fobister said.
Pahpasay said she'd heard the stories, but never really believed them.

Police stripped a New York City officer of his badge and gun Monday after a video posted on YouTube showed him body-checking a bicyclist who was part of a Times Square demonstration.
The video was recorded Friday at the Critical Mass ride, a monthly protest of urban reliance on motor vehicles.
The video, posted anonymously, shows the officer standing in the street as bikes whiz past. He moves toward a cyclist and violently knocks him to the ground in front of crowds of people.
The officer in the video was placed on desk duty pending the outcome of a police department investigation, chief police spokesman Paul Browne said. The officer's name wasn't released.
The biker, Christopher Long, of Hoboken, N.J., was arrested because he was obstructing traffic in the heart of Times Square, a criminal complaint said. He was charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
The complaint said Long, 29, deliberately steered his bicycle into the officer, causing both of them to fall to the ground.
During his arrest, Long squirmed and kicked, saying to the officers, "You are pawns in the game. I'm gonna have your job," the complaint said.
There were no other arrests during the ride.
Long's lawyer, David Rankin, said he hopes the Manhattan district attorney's office will drop the charges. The district attorney's office said it was investigating.
Long's next court date was set for Sept. 5.

They opened the car and pried open the trunk and called 911. The victim told invevstigators she thinks she was in the trunk for about 5 hours.
She is now at Flagler hospital in St. Augustine.

Late last night 876radio.com received some very compelling information that had us wondering, has the Broadcasting Commission gone too far or do our locals entertainers need to be more vigilant with the lyrics that they put to the masses? Yesterday during Konshens performance at popular radio jock Kurt Rileys' birthday celebration at the Asylum Night club in new Kingston it was revealed to us that his current chart topper "Winner" had been banned by the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica and pulled from all radio rotation islandwide. According to a statement issued the reason for banning the song was due to some questionable lyrics in the second verse that is said to be promoting prostitution, inciting violence and other illegal activities. Earlier today when 876radio.com caught up with Konshens and Mark Pinnock of Natural Bridge Records and posed the question as to whether they had any intentions of remixing or revising the song the answer was a resounding 'No' followed by an explanation. "We have no intention of revising the song, the tracked has already been edited and taking anything further from it would be stifling the artiste's creativity, yes some aspects of the song may be deemed controversial but does it warrant being banned NO. Ironically there are countless songs presently being played on the radio with lyrics so graphic and crude it makes one shudder, yet still they continue to enjoy maximum airtime". Konshens on the other hand was quick to point out that though he is not in agreement with the Commission, if they see the need to pull the recording from the airwaves then so be it. "They're just doing their job, so if them pull it a suh it go, but mi nah go change nothing in it". Now the question begs if the Commission is out to clean up the airwaves, what about all those other gun glorifying lyrics that get played constantly coupled with all those movies laden with profanity, indecent exposure, violence and *lo**shed that are being shown on our local television screens and movie theatres. Will there be a move to purge that industry?, One cannot help but wonder if it's a case of double standard that is being practiced. On the flip side Konshens is set to make his debut at this summers' staging of Red Stripe Temptation Isle (R.T.I) in Negril, where he'll perform alongside the energy god Elephant Man before heading to Capleton's "St. Mary Mi Come From" and then jetting off to the highly anticipated "Irie Jamboree" next month. Mark said fans can look out for a cadre of new Konshens singles to hit the airwaves in the coming months. We have embedded a copy of our exclusive interview with Konshens along with his music video Winner for your viewing pleasure (see videos below). |
The documents include Ross's employment application (below), which notes that he was a 1994 graduate of Miami's Carol City Senior High School and spent a year at Georgia's Albany State College, where he studied Criminal Justice.
On a personal history form, he identifies Tommie Ann Roberts as his mother and Tawanda Roberts as his sister. Both women are prominently thanked in the liner notes to Ross's 2008 album "Trilla." Additionally, according to Florida Secretary of State records, Tommie and Tawanda serve as officers of Rick Ross Charities, a not-for-profit whose current address is identical to the one Ross himself provided on his DoC employment records.
Other personnel records include a fingerprint card that was used during a criminal background check, and the resulting report showing that Ross was clean. In a supplemental application, Ross agreed to perform a wide ranger of correctional officer duties, including "shoot an inmate attempting to escape."

Why so much artiste wear white on Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest?
China named its Olympic womens gymnastics team on Friday, and the inclusion of at least two athletes has further raised questions, widespread in the sport, about whether the host nation for the Beijing Games is using under-age competitors.
Chinese officials responded immediately, providing The New York Times with copies of passports indicating that both athletes in question He Kexin, a gold-medal favorite in the uneven parallel bars, and Jiang Yuyuan are 16, the minimum age for Olympic eligibility since 1997.
Officials with the International Gymnastics Federation said that questions about Hes age had been raised by Chinese news media reports, USA Gymnastics and fans of the sport, but that Chinese authorities presented passport information to show that He is 16.
Online records listing Chinese gymnasts and their ages that were posted on official Web sites in China, along with ages given in the official Chinese news media, however, seem to contradict the passport information, indicating that He and Jiang may be as young as 14 two years below the Olympic limit.
Mary Lou Retton, the Olympic all-around gymnastics champion at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, recently watched a competition video of He and other Chinese gymnasts on the uneven bars.
The girls are so little, so young, Retton said. Speaking of He, Retton rolled her eyes and laughed, saying, They said she was 16, but I dont know.
An advantage for younger gymnasts is that they are lighter and, often, more fearless when they perform difficult maneuvers, said Nellie Kim, a five-time Olympic gold medalist for the former Soviet Union who is now the president of the womens technical committee for the Swiss-based International Gymnastics Federation.
Its easier to do tricks, Kim said. And psychologically, I think they worry less.
The womens gymnastics competition at the Beijing Games, which begin Aug. 8, is expected to be a dramatic battle for the team gold medal between the United States and China. At the 2007 world championships, the Americans prevailed by 95-hundredths of a point.
On the uneven bars, He and Nastia Liukin of the United States are expected to challenge for the individual gold medal.
In Chinese newspaper profiles this year, He was listed as 14, too young for the Beijing Games.
The Times found two online records of official registration lists of Chinese gymnasts that list Hes birthday as Jan. 1, 1994, which would make her 14. A 2007 national registry of Chinese gymnasts now blocked in China but viewable through Google cache shows Hes age as 1994.1.1.
Another registration list that is unblocked, dated Jan. 27, 2006, and regarding an intercity competition in Chengdu, China, also lists Hes birthday as Jan. 1, 1994. That date differs by two years from the birth date of Jan. 1, 1992, listed on Hes passport, which was issued Feb. 14, 2008.
There has been considerable talk about the ages of Chinese gymnasts on Web sites devoted to the sport. And there has been frequent editing of Hes Wikipedia entry, although it could not be determined by whom. One paragraph that discusses the controversy of her age kept disappearing and reappearing on Hes entry. As of Friday, a different version of the paragraph had been restored to the page.
The other gymnast, Jiang, is listed on her passport issued March 2, 2006 as having been born on Nov. 1, 1991, which would make her 16 and thus eligible to compete at the Beijing Games.
A different birth date, indicating Jiang is not yet 15, appears on a list of junior competitors from the Zhejiang Province sports administration. The list of athletes includes national identification card numbers into which birth dates are embedded. Jiangs national card number as it appears on this list shows her birth date as Oct. 1, 1993, which indicates that she will turn 15 in the fall, and would thus be ineligible to compete in the Beijing Games.
Zhang Hongliang, an official with the Chinese gymnastics federation, said Friday that perhaps Chinese reporters and provincial sports authorities made mistakes in listing Hes and Jiangs birth dates differently from the dates given on their passports.
The two athletes have attended international sports competitions before, and Im sure the information is correct, Zhang said of the athletes passports.
The International Gymnastics Federation said it had contacted Chinese officials in May about the gymnasts ages after receiving inquiries from fans and reading newspaper accounts, including one in The China Daily, the countrys official English-language paper, stating that He was 14.
We heard these rumors, and we immediately wrote to the Chinese gymnastics federation about He, said André Gueisbuhler, the secretary general of the international federation. They immediately sent a copy of the passport, showing the age, and everything is O.K. Thats all we can check.
If someone provided proof that any gymnast was under age, or filed a formal complaint, Gueisbuhler said, he would be quite happy to check and ask again.
As long as we have no official complaint, there is no reason to act, if we get a passport that obviously is in order, he said.
Steve Penny, the president of USA Gymnastics, said he had asked Kim of the international federation about Hes age after receiving e-mail messages referring to newspaper accounts and comments made on blogs and in Internet chat rooms that said she was 14. But Penny said he was not really concerned.
If they have valid passports, bring em on, Penny said. If they say theyre good, were going to beat them.
You cant worry about it. You do your job, and you expect other people are doing theirs and you expect its a fair field of play.
Privately, some gymnastics officials said that even if other countries had real concerns about the Chinese, they might be reluctant to make accusations for fear of reprisals by judges at the Beijing Games.
If it is true that under-age gymnasts are competing, Kim said: Its a bad thing. It should not be acceptable.
Yang Yun of China won individual and team bronze medals at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and later said in an interview on state-run television that she had been 14 at the time of those Games. A Hunan Province sports administration report also said later that she had been 14 when she competed in Sydney.
Bela Karolyi, who coached Retton of the United States and Nadia Comaneci of Romania to their Olympic gold-medal triumphs, said the problem of under-age gymnasts had been around for years. Age is an easy thing to alter in an authoritarian country, he said, because the government has such strict control of official paperwork.
He recalled Kim Gwang Suk, a North Korean gymnast who showed up at the 1991 world championships with two missing front teeth. Karolyi, who said he thought Kim must have been younger than 11 at the time, and others contended that those front teeth had been baby teeth and that permanent teeth had not yet replaced them. Her coaches said she had lost them years before, during an accident on the uneven bars.
At those world championships, Kim was 4 feet 4 inches and about 62 pounds, and she claimed to be 16. At one point, the North Korean Gymnastics Federation listed her at 15 for three straight years; the federation was later barred from the 1993 world championships for falsifying ages.
Oh, come on, she was just in diapers and everyone could see that, just like some of the Chinese girls are now, Karolyi said. If you look close, you can see they still have their baby teeth. Little tiny teeth!
But it is not likely that anyone could prove that the Chinese gymnasts are under age, Karolyi said.
Its literally impossible, he said. The paperwork is changed just too good. In a country like that, theyre experts at it. Nothing new.
