How not to get caught cheating...

August 13, 2008

Some important tips...

****

Text Messy --You may think you're being sly with "ILY," but what you're really doing is leaving a trail. Ask married Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick whose steamy texts to an equally married aide became painfully public.

Cubicle Canoodling --Or, the work fling. Even if the bosses aren't reading your e-mails, there's no way this affair is going to stay private. After all, most of any given workday is devoted to distracting oneself from the task at hand and what's more interesting than gossiping about who's doing who?

Family Feud --Sleeping with a member of his family (other than the one you're wedded to) is not only tacky, it's begging to get caught. And really, aren't holidays unpleasant enough? No one can forget Woody Allen and Soon Yi Previn.

Teacher's Pet -- Debra Lafave and Mary Kay LeTourneau are but a couple of lady teachers who've experienced that most forbidden fruit -- their students. And since teenage boys aren't known for discretion, these ladies subsequently were outed, and punished, for their dalliances.

21-Year-Old In Critical Condition

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A 21-year-old Palatka man was rushed to an area hospital after Putnam County Sheriff's Office detectives said he was shot in the case of an apparent "lover's triangle."
Deputies said Tarvaris Wesley was shot Thursday night by his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, Kelvis Bellamy, at the Mellon Manor Apartments in the 3700 block of St. Johns Avenue just outside the city limits of Palatka.
Investigators said Wesley and his new girlfriend, 25-year-old Jakita Poole, were lying in bed with Pooles 7-month-old child when Bellamy, the father of Poole's three children, kicked out the bedroom window and climbed into the apartment.

Poole ran from the room and Bellamy went after Wesley. Bellamy shot Wesley at least once, deputies said.
Bellamy was flown by air ambulance to Shands-UF Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
According to the sheriff's office, Poole's other two children were present in another part of the home when the shooting took place.
The lead investigator in the case, Detective Ken Taylor, was expected to confer with the state attorneys office to get a warrant for the arrest of Bellamy.
The sheriff's office asks anyone with information on Bellamy's whereabouts or on the shooting is asked to contact either Taylor at                386-329-0415         or Crimestoppers at                888-277-8477        .

Jamaicans sprinting out of poverty

(China Daily)

KINGSTON: Shelly-Ann Fraser can thank her mother's uneasy relationship with the Jamaican police for helping her become an Olympic sprint champion.

Maxine Fraser, who brought up her daughter in one of the Caribbean's meanest ghettos, believes her quickfire genes have been passed on to the 21-year-old, who led a Jamaican clean sweep in the 100m final in Beijing on Sunday.

Maxine has had to live on her wits all of her life and working as a street vendor she regularly has to put in a blinding turn of pace if police are chasing her for illegal trading.

"This is to show that something good can come out of the ghetto. Ghetto can't hold you back as long as you have ambition," said Maxine after watching her daughter take gold.

For Fraser, Olympic success will guarantee an escape from the island's grinding poverty.

Her family still lives in a tenement yard in one of Jamaica's toughest inner-city communities known as Waterhouse.

It is a place where zinc fences, bad roads and high levels of crime are a feature.

The young sprinter does not live there in Waterhouse now. She boards at the University of Technology, where she is a second-year student.

Education and sporting prowess are seen as keys to a better life.

"In school many people see track as a means of gaining an academic scholarship. There is also more to it," said high-school coach Michael Oliviera, who trained Olympic medallists Winthrop Graham and Deon Hemmings.

"If an athlete is able to balance track with studies the rewards are great. One good season on the track and you are OK."

It's been estimated that Asafa Powell, the former world record holder who was fifth behind compatriot Usain Bolt in the men's 100m in China, made approximately $1.5 million from the track in 2006.

Jamaica's track program starts as early as the kindergarten level with children as young as four running in championships at the country's national stadium.

Sprint queen Merlene Ottey, who now runs for Slovenia, first ran at a girls' championship barefooted before she reached her teens.

Ottey, along with the likes of Juliet Cuthbert, Herb McKenley, Bert Cameron and Donald Quarrie have all helped to hoist the Jamaican flag.

But it was not until Jamaica's dominance in the short sprints that the world was forced to take a serious look at the Caribbean country.

As always, however, there have been questions over what fuels the recent successes.

Adrian Lorde, head of the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organization, recently lambasted Jamaica for not doing enough doping tests.

However, locals have scoffed at suggestions that drugs may be the reason for the country's recent success.

In fact, many argue that the heavy consumption of yam, banana and breadfruit have helped power the sprinters.

Oscar Pistorius, whose prostheses were previously considered an unfair advantage, has been given the thumbs up to compete

Pistorius_485.jpg
Oscar Pistorius:

Its about time. After an excruciating and absurd debate, double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius will be allowed to compete in the Olympics. Pistorius won his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport today which immediately overturned an asinine ruling by the International Association of Athletics Federations which stated Pistorius gained an unfair advantage from his prosthetics.

"I am ecstatic," Pistorius told reporters in Milan, Italy. "When I found out, I cried. It is a battle that has been going on for far too long. It's a great day for sport. I think this day is going to go down in history for the equality of disabled people."

Two days of testing in January at the German Sport University's Institute of Biomechanics at Cologne yielded data showing that to run at a given speed, Pistorius required 25% less energy expenditure than his able bodied peers. It further quantified Pistorius's prostheses as 30% more efficient than a human ankle. The panel wasnt convinced.

"The panel was not persuaded that there was sufficient evidence of any metabolic advantage in favor of a double-amputee using the Cheetah Flex-Foot," CAS said. "Furthermore, the CAS panel has considered that the IAAF did not prove that the biomechanical effects of using this particular prosthetic device gives Oscar Pistorius an advantage over other athletes not using the device."

Whether the panel went conveniently blind to the science or whether holes truly exist in the analysis is irrelevant. What could less represent the Olympic spirit more than banning Pistorious?

Unfortunately for Pistorius, his toughest challenge might still be ahead. Hell need to cut 1.01 seconds of his personal best of 46.56 to qualify for the 400-meter race in Beijing. Should he not hit that mark, South Africa could select him to the relay squad or as an alternate.

"A lot of the time we've had this year we've devoted to the court case," Pistorius said. "Now when I get home, my time can be dedicated to training. I am going to have to start thinking about getting my body in shape in order to run those (qualifying) times. I am hopeful there will be enough time but it is going to be very difficult.

Ironically, in the midst of this worldwide hullabaloo, another amputee has quietly qualified for the Olympics in 10-km swimming. Fellow South African Natalie Du Toit lost her leg in 2001 and competes without a prosthetic which begs a sad but necessary question.:How long until some governing body requires testing to quantify whether her reduction in drag is unfair? We're the last people to admit, but it's true: Sometimes the science shouldnt matter.

Usain's Dad Heads To China 0 Comment written below The fathers of Jamaican world record and former world record holders, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell will be heading to Beijing to join their sons on the side lines of the Bird Nest stadium in China later this week. Bolt who turns twenty two (22) tomorrow, plans to celebrate his birthday in the chinese city by his mother's side. Considering the importance of such a milestone the team from Digicel Jamaica thought it was only fitting that Wellesley Bolt be present to participate in his son's celebrations and has sponsored an all expense paid trip for him to join in the festivities. 876radio.com understands that Bolt is not aware that his dad is en route to the Asian continent and will be pleasantly surprised on his arrival. On the flip side Asafa's father, Rev. William Powell and his brother Donovan will be making the trip courtesy of Scotia Bank Jamaica and are expected to arrive in Beijing on Friday ahead of the start of the Mens 4x100 meter relays. Asafa is expected to participate in that event after failing to medal in the Mens 100 meters finals last Saturday.

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand court has allowed a parade of topless porn stars on motor bikes to proceed on the main street of the country's biggest city, local media said Tuesday.

Auckland City Council had sought a court injunction to stop the "Boobs on Bikes" parade, scheduled for Wednesday, saying it breached a bylaw banning offensive public events.

But Judge Nicola Mathers said while opponents may find the parade offensive or tasteless, the fact that 80,000 people had gathered for a similar event last year meant a significant number of people did not agree with the critics, New Zealand Press Association said.

The parade on Queens St., featuring leather-clad local and international porn stars, is part of an "Erotica Expo" organized by self-styled "porn king" Steve Crow.

BEIJING (AP) Asafa Powell is one of about 10 track and field athletes participating in a previously unreported voluntary anti-doping programme - which is why the former 100 metres World Record-holder's complaints Tuesday about too many drug tests surprised the sport's world governing body.

The Associated Press learned about the pilot project, in which athletes agree to undergo unlimited testing by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), after Powell said he felt targeted since arriving in China on August 1.

"About two days ago, I got pretty upset, because since I've been here, they've tested me four times, and they took *lo** - a lot of *lo**," Powell said at an invitation-only news conference to promote his shoe sponsor.

Then, tongue apparently planted firmly in cheek, Powell added: "They are taking so much *lo**, I am going to be very weak before the final of the 100 metres."

Told of those comments, IAAF spokesman Nick Davies said in a telephone interview that Powell agreed to take part in the organisation's programme that began this year.

Possibly exaggerating

"He knows about it, so it's a bit strange he would complain," Davies said. "He's possibly exaggerating about the four tests. But certainly he is part of the programme. He knows he will be tested more often."

Powell's agent, Paul Doyle, said he was unaware of Powell's participation in the IAAF programme.

Davies said it's possible Powell has been tested in China by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the IAAF.

"The point is, it's a good thing if he's been tested a lot," Davies said. "He's a favourite for the 100 metres, so why not?"

Powell joins current World Record-holder, Usain Bolt, and US record-holder Tyson Gay in a highly anticipated 100 in Beijing. Powell expects to be tested again before the event's preliminary heats Friday (tonight Jamaica time), the first day of track competition at these Olympics. The 100 final is Saturday.

Gay, who arrived in China at the end of last week, said Monday he had been "*lo**-tested once and urine-tested once since I've been here".

Chemistry profile

Gay, swimmer Michael Phelps and sprinter Allyson Felix are among a dozen American athletes whose body chemistry is profiled using a series of *lo** and urine tests under a voluntary US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) programme that Davies characterised as similar to that run by the IAAF.

Davies said the IAAF programme, like USADA's, uses so-called longitudinal tests in hopes of curtailing performance-enhancing drugs in the long term. Instead of testing against fixed, arbitrary numbers, the tests establish each athlete's body chemistry, then compare new tests to that baseline.

"It's what I'm doing to show my love for my sport," Gay said. "It comes with the territory. Past champions have tested positive. But an Olympic champion needs to carry himself clean, to be clean and to be able to prove he's clean."

The IOC has made a point of going after dopers at the Beijing Games, increasing its number of tests to about 4,500 - up from 3,600 for the Athens Games four years ago.

It is also doing 'target testing' of suspected dopers.

More than 50 athletes already are missing from the Games because of doping accusations.

"They are saying that they are doing, like, over 4,000 tests, but it's just very difficult," Powell said. Then he continued: "But hopefully they can ... make these Olympic Games very clean."

Jamaican clean sweep in Women's 100m

(BEIJING, August 16) -- Shelly-Ann Fraser of Jamaica has been crowned the world's fastest woman after winning the final of the Women's 100m in a personal best time of 10.78 seconds at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Fraser led from the start to finish, well clear of her compatriots Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, who won silver together in identical times of 10.98s.

Silver medalist Sherone Simpson commented on the Jamaican clean sweep of the medals, "We made history. Just like yesterday Bolt [Usain Bolt, Jamaica] set a new world record. We are all great athletes and I'm very excited about the tremendous achievement we've made for our country."

"The guys should have done it too; they had the speed to," teased Stewart.

It marked only the sixth clean sweep in Olympic Games Women's Athletics. It was the first time a 100m event had been swept at an Olympic Games level since the US men won all medals in Stockholm in 1912.

Athens silver medalist Lauryn Williams finished fourth in 11.03, which was the best result of the three United States finalists.

"I was thinking the photo finish was between me and Sherone [Simpson]," she said after the race.

Williams' team-mate Muna Lee recovered from a bad start to claim fifth in 11.07, while Torri Edwards, who came into the race as the season's fastest woman, finished last in a time of 11.20.

Jeanette Kwakye, the first Briton to reach the sprint final since Heather Oakes in 1984, finished sixth.

Defending Olympic champion Yulia Nestsiarenka of Belarus fell short in the semifinal.

The world record in this event, never really approached before or since, is the controversial 10.49 put up by the late Florence-Griffith Joyner.

Jamaica is now home to the fastest two people on the planet, after Usain Bolt won last night's Men's 100m final in dramatic fashion, setting a new world record of 9.69 seconds.

Busload to meet Shelly-Ann

When Shelly-Ann Fraser returns home with her Olympic gold medal, a busload of friends and family will be waiting to greet her at the airport.

The family of the 21-year-old who created history by becoming the first Jamaican woman to win Olympic gold in the 100 metres, is understandably overcome with joy and can hardly wait to give Fraser the hero's welcome she deserves.

Community celebration

Her victory means much not only to her family, but to the entire Ashoka Road, Waterhouse, Kingston 11 community. Scores of residents crowded the streets of the community after the race, dancing in the streets, clanging pot covers and setting off firecrackers.

Fraser's aunt, Althea Simpson, whose hoarseness gave testament to the celebrations that erupted in the family home, told THE STAR, "I am overjoyed, till mi can't even talk. I am proud of her, so proud of her. Mi all lose mi voice. But I knew she was going to do it."

Emotional moment

For Fraser's mother, Maxine Simpson, whose dreams of becoming an athlete were deferred by early pregnancy, watching her daughter win was an emotional moment. She quickly pointed to Fraser's humble beginnings in Waterhouse. She told THE STAR, "Dat girl hold her head up high in di ghetto." She told THE STAR of her own struggles as a vendor at Central Plaza in Half-Way Tree and jokingly said she had outrun many police officers who had attempted to accost her. "Mi haffi run from police everyday. Yu waan si mi wid di trolley and di big box. When dem couldn't ketch mi, dem seh mi a something else," she said.

Confident and determined

When she last spoke to her daughter on Saturday night, Simpson said Fraser sounded confident and determined. She gave her some words of encouragement. "I told her to wrap up dat hair dat she let go cause di breeze could hold her back. She was strong an she tell mi dat she jus going out there to do her thing and she did do it. She neva give up. She fight to reach her goal."

Speed, it seems, runs in this family, as Simpson's two sisters were also athletes. Their careers were also cut short by pregnancies. Simpson's nephew also had great promise in athletics but chose not to pursue it seriously.

All traditional Sunday activities were put on hold to celebrate Fraser's victory as her mother pointed out, "Wi don't even put on a pot pan fire. Dem seh wi a go get some music an ting."

Simpson is planning a grand homecoming for her second child and told THE STAR, "All of us going to greet her at the airport. All di family. We want like a bus or so to go out there an meet her.

Fraser stormed to the finish line in 10.78 seconds, staving off strong competition from fellow Jamaicans Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart, who tied for second place.

THE ZINC fences and pothole-filled roads in Waterhouse, west central St Andrew, belie the great achievement of one of its own, Shelly-Ann Fraser.

The sprinter became the first woman in Jamaican history to win gold in the 100 metres at the Olympic Games.

Fans in her hometown claimed gold for the 21-year-old long before the race began.

"A gold she a get. Nutten more, nutten less," one woman resident declared.

Great expectations

Mother, Maxine Simpson, was less confident, believing com-patriot Kerron Stewart would outrun Fraser.

"Me look fi her get the silver, but me just want the one-two-three fi Jamaica. But if she ever get a good start, she will win," she said. And she was right.

At 9:20 a.m., the family huddled in front of the TV in a small bedroom.

"Lord, give my daughter strength and give the team strength, dear Lord," she prayed as the racers settled into the blocks.

The highly anticipated final starts.

"Push out, Baby, push out! Do it for Jesus!"

Celebratory tremor

Just 10.78 seconds later, the race was over. The one-room board structure erupted, everything - even a pot of rice and peas on the stove - rattled by the celebratory tremor.

"Mi cyaa cook again!" Fraser's mother exclaims.

"She win! 1-2-3, 1-2-3!" shouted Shelly-Ann's younger brother, Andrew Fraser, as the Jamaicans crossed the finish line. Information emerged soon after that Stewart and Sherone Simpson had actually tied for second.

Even the dogs in the yard were in a frenzy.

"Me go down pon mi knee and me tell you she did set out fi get the gold," her aunt, Juliet Simpson, said. "She win! She win! She take we out of sufferation."

Her mother chimed in: "Mi thank Him (God) fi this. Him give mi such a brilliant child."

The pandemonium in the house spread to the streets as residents clanged pots and pans to signal the victory. Firecrackers rounded out the celebration.

"Mi feel perfect. Gold mi was looking for and mi never expect less," said Shelly-Ann's father, Orane Fraser. Her grandfather, Rupert, said Shelly-Ann had assured him ahead of the final that she would win.

Her church, the Penwood Church of Christ, was not left out of the memorable moment. Residents stormed the church with pot covers and pans, transforming the worship service into a thanksgiving party.

Fraser has been attending the church since she was 12 years old.

"Good things come from Waterhouse too, you know," church elder Ralph Walker said. "It's not just the negative things that you see in the news."

Veronica definitely out of 100m

BEIJING, China (CMC): World Championships gold medal winner, Veronica Campbell-Brown, is definitely out of the women's 100 metres at the 29th Olympiad, Jamaican team officials announced Tuesday. Campbell-Brown failed to secure an automatic slot in the event after finishing fourth at the Jamaica trials in June, thus only making her an alternative behind Kerron Stewart (10.80), Shelly Ann Fraser (10.85) and Sherone Simpson (10.87). Her time was 10.88. Call for replacement Following the shocking result, there were almost immediate calls for the 26-year-old, who has set the world alight thereafter, to replace one of the trio in Beijing. Yet, despite her form this season and her ability to produce at the top level, the defending Olympic bronze medallist will not make an appearance in the event. According to Jamaica Amateur Athletic Association rules, the top three finishers earn the right to represent the country should they maintain their form going into the Games. And given the recent form of the trio, who have all dipped under 11 seconds after the trials, administrators had no choice but to keep them. This now means that Campbell-Brown will have to focus her attention on defending her 200 metres title against a confident American Allyson Felix, who totally outpaced her at the World Championships in Osaka last summer. Heading into the Olympics, the Jamaican has been bang on form in the event, running two of the three sub-21 seconds times for the year. The other performer below the mark this season is compatriot Stewart, who blasted to a career best of 21.99 seconds to finish second at the Jamaica championships. Campbell-Brown will also run as a member of a powerful Jamaican 4x100 metres quartet, favoured to strike gold and defend their 2004 title.

Vybz Kartel to Drop Two Albums this Fall

kartel.jpgVybz Kartel a.k.a Addi the Teacha may be releasing two albums in the fall of this year. He has completed an album called 'Trailer Load a Money' on his own Adidjaheim Records imprint plus he has a completed album with Stephen 'Di Genius' McGregor of Big Ship Records.

"The Trailer Load a Money album has been mixed by Jordan and it's sick. I love how he mixed the album, it is obvious that a lot of time, energy and thought went into it. The album I have with Stephen is a storytelling album in the tradition of Slick Rick, dancehall songs with narratives, it's like a ghetto novel," Kartel told one876entertainment.com.

Kartel has already scored two number one hit singles this year with Money Fi Spend and Nah Go Nowhere, both on the Big Ship label. The singles went #1 on the RE, Jamaica Music Countdown and Stampede Street Vibes charts.

Commission Bans Konshens

findImg.php?pic_size=200&table_name=news_img_tab&table_field=img_id&img_id=1691 Late last night 876radio.com received some very compelling information that had us wondering, has the Broadcasting Commission gone too far or do our locals entertainers need to be more vigilant with the lyrics that they put to the masses?

Yesterday during Konshens performance at popular radio jock Kurt Rileys' birthday celebration at the Asylum Night club in new Kingston it was revealed to us that his current chart topper "Winner" had been banned by the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica and pulled from all radio rotation islandwide.

According to a statement issued the reason for banning the song was due to some questionable lyrics in the second verse that is said to be promoting prostitution, inciting violence and other illegal activities.

Earlier today when 876radio.com caught up with Konshens and Mark Pinnock of Natural Bridge Records and posed the question as to whether they had any intentions of remixing or revising the song the answer was a resounding 'No' followed by an explanation.

"We have no intention of revising the song, the tracked has already been edited and taking anything further from it would be stifling the artiste's creativity, yes some aspects of the song may be deemed controversial but does it warrant being banned NO. Ironically there are countless songs presently being played on the radio with lyrics so graphic and crude it makes one shudder, yet still they continue to enjoy maximum airtime".

Konshens on the other hand was quick to point out that though he is not in agreement with the Commission, if they see the need to pull the recording from the airwaves then so be it. "They're just doing their job, so if them pull it a suh it go, but mi nah go change nothing in it".

Now the question begs if the Commission is out to clean up the airwaves, what about all those other gun glorifying lyrics that get played constantly coupled with all those movies laden with profanity, indecent exposure, violence and *lo**shed that are being shown on our local television screens and movie theatres. Will there be a move to purge that industry?, One cannot help but wonder if it's a case of double standard that is being practiced.

On the flip side Konshens is set to make his debut at this summers' staging of Red Stripe Temptation Isle (R.T.I) in Negril, where he'll perform alongside the energy god Elephant Man before heading to Capleton's "St. Mary Mi Come From" and then jetting off to the highly anticipated "Irie Jamboree" next month.

Mark said fans can look out for a cadre of new Konshens singles to hit the airwaves in the coming months.

Beenie Man

It has been reported that 'the doctor', Beenie Man, was involved in a fight backstage with a woman at a show in England over the weekend.

Checks made by THE STAR revealed that the woman, who is a sister of D'Angel, had an argument over some money that was owed.

Patrick Roberts, who was present at the show, said, "The stage show finished 10 minutes to four in the Monday morning, London time."

"When we were leaving, Michelle's sister came and said to Beenie, 'Moses mek mi talk to yuh'. They were reasoning for a little while and I overheard them saying something about some money thing that he had for her. Him seh him wi talk to her when he came back to England because they were leaving for Germany. When Beenie Man a guh walk off, she pulled his chain an it buss off and the body guard den intervene."

COULD not confirm

Up until press time, THE STAR was unable to make contact with Beenie Man for a comment on the situation.

His publicist, Ray Alexander, said that he could not confirm what had happened, as Beenie Man had not mentioned anything to him.

"To my knowledge, I don't know anything about that because he (Beenie Man) spoke to me at 8 o' clock (yesterday morning) and he was on his way to Germany and he was telling me the show they had in Stratford Rex in London was sold out and how they had a good show. He didn't mention to me about any squabble that he had with a female backstage. Honestly, I couldn't say if that were the case. I would have to talk to him when he gets to Germany, which would be tonight, or tomorrow morning, to see if there is any truth to it," Alexander told THE STAR.

Guarantee safety

According to Alexander, Beenie Man hadn't performed in London in over two years. "Last year, he (Beenie Man) was suppose to perform at that same venue, but there was a threat on his life and the police said they couldn't guarantee his safety."

Beenie Man, who is currently on a month-long tour of Europe is scheduled to be in Germany today (August 19) at Hamburg, Dortmound on Wednesday, Stuttgart on Thursday, and Chiemese on Friday.

The tour then moves to Holland on Saturday, August 23 at Den Haag, Oudenaarde; Belgium on Sunday, August 24; then back to Amsterdam, Holland, on Tuesday, August 26; culminating in Tilburg on Wednesday, August 27.

WASHINGTON - A space-age version of the rusty springs under old pickup trucks will help NASA fix the most pressing technical problem with its high-tech new rocket to send astronauts back to the moon.

NASA is going to use 17 super-sized shock absorbers in its not-yet-built rocket to keep the top from shaking too much for astronauts, agency officials said in a Tuesday press conference.

For close to a year, NASA engineers working on the new Ares 1 rocket and Orion crew capsule have been wrestling with the problem of heavy vibrations from the massive rocket engines about two minutes after launch. If the vibrations are not dampened, it could potentially harm the crew or make it too difficult for them to operate for a few seconds.

Officials on Tuesday said they have settled on a solution that is similar to what smooths the rides of pickup trucks: shock absorbers. But NASA's shock absorbers will be big and mostly remote-controlled.

The plan is to install 16 canisters in the bottom of the rocket with 100-pound weights attached to springs. Battery-powered motors will move the weights up and down to stop vibrations. Those are essentially remote-controlled shock absorbers, said Garry Lyles, who headed the team of NASA engineers tackling the shaking problem.

A 17th shock absorber will be a ring of weights and springs near the middle of the rocket.

The fix will add weight, but the rocket can handle it, said Ares projects manager Steve Cook. There are still other daunting technical problems facing the moon program, but Cook said: "There's nothing on our risk list that I would term a showstopper or major issue that we can't deal with."

In the last few weeks, the moon program has had to push back key launch dates, suffered a key contracting setback, and got chided by a NASA safety panel.

The agency hopes to launch the first Ares 1 rocket with a crew by early 2015 and send astronauts back to the moon by 2020.

The baby, weighing only 600 grams at birth, spent at least five hours inside one of the hospital's refrigerated storage units, before her parents, who had taken her to be buried, began noticing some movement.

"We unwrapped her and felt she was moving. We didn't believe it at first. Then she began holding my mother's hand, and then we saw her open her mouth," said 26-year-old Faiza Magdoub, the baby's mother.

The baby was pronounced dead several hours earlier, after doctors at Western Galilee hospital in northern Israel were forced to abort her mother's pregnancy because of internal bleeding. Magdoub was 23 weeks into her pregnancy.

"We don't know how to explain this, so when we don't know how to explain things in the medical world we call it a miracle, and this is probably what happened," hospital deputy director Moshe Daniel said.

The baby was then taken to the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit for further treatment, but doctors were not sure how long she will live.

Motti Ravid, a professor of internal medicine, told Israel's Channel 10 that the low temperature inside the cooler had slowed down the baby's metabolism and likely helped her survive.

Mobile giant, Digicel, is encouraging its customers, who receive suspicious text messages about winning dubious prizes to contact the company if they are unsure about what to do.

Text message

The advisory comes after THE STAR contacted the mobile phone company about a text message some Digicel customers have been receiving. The text message claims people have won a vehicle and that they should contact a telephone number in Nairobi, Kenya, to claim their prize.

"When in doubt, take your Digicel phone and call and check, do some investigations," Patria-Kay Aarons, public relations manager at Digicel said.

The text reads,"Japan International Motor Show: You won a Toyota Land Cruiser VX, year 2000 s/Roof in Promotions held in Nairobi, Kenya. Details call 25478799168."

When THE STAR contacted the number, we got a tone, which one often gets when a phone has been disconnected. In addition the news team contacted the number that the text message was sent from and received a similar tone. The area code for the number, which was 255756231779, suggested that it originated in Zanzibar or Tanzania in Africa.

So far it would seem that the texts are a scam to get money, as one woman who received the message called the number. She was told to go to New Kingston and pay $8,000, to collect the vehicle.

Send U$200

Another customer who received the text message, said he was told that he too had won a Land Cruiser valued at US$92,000 (J$6.5 million). However he noted that prior to the text he had received an e-mail telling him that he had won the vehicle in addition to money and that he should send U$200 to pay to clear the vehicle. However, when he told them to deduct the money needed from the sum that he allegedly won and send the balance, he received no further details.

Although neither the Fraud Squad nor the Digicel were aware of the text messages, Aarons said Digicel did not give out the numbers of those who received the messages to anyone or any company.

However she noted that some companies do guess telephone numbers and send out the messages randomly, so anyone could likely receive one of the text messages. She also said she was advising people to be cautious. "If you have won something, you should not have to pay money to get it. If that happens you need to be suspicious," she said.

The computer game industry has decided to get tough with people who share files illegally over the web

div#related-article-links p a, div#related-article-links p a:visited { color:#06c; }

As many as 100 people suspected of illegally sharing computer game files over the internet are to be sued for copyright infringement, it emerged today.

A London-based law firm said it would launch legal proceedings on behalf of the computer game publisher Topware Interactive after a woman was fined Ł16,000 for illegally sharing a pinball-themed game over the web.

The woman, who has not been named, was forced to pay Ł6,000 of damages and Ł10,000 in costs to Topware after she was found to have uploaded the game Dream Pinball 3D to the internet and distributed it using file-sharing networks.

File-sharing networks have been the bane of the entertainment and media industry for more than a decade. They enable owners of computer games, music and other digital content to 'rip' - or copy - such content to their computer and share it with other users via the internet.

To date the efforts of authorities have focused on those who have shared music, but lawyers said today that the problem also affected the computer game industry, and that fines such as the one issued yesterday would act as a deterrent to file-sharers.

Earlier this year, the Central London County Court separately ruled against four people who were also found to have infringed copyright by sharing computer games illegally.

"Illegal file-sharing is a very serious issue resulting in millions of pounds of losses to copyright owners," said David Gore, a partner at Davenport Lyons, a London-based firm. "As downloading speeds and internet penetration increase, this continues to be a worldwide problem across the media industry which increasingly relies on digital revenues."

"The damages and costs ordered by the court are significant and show that taking direct steps against infringers is an important and effective weapon in the battle against online piracy."

Last month, the music industry announced a three step sanction procedure against illegal file-sharers, in which customers would have their internet connections suspended on the second copyright infringement and cancelled on the third.

The measures were announced as part of a deal agreed between the BPI, which represents record labels in Britain, and internet service providers.

In the past five years, 150 prosecutions have been brought against Britons who have illegally shared music over the internet.

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- Police said no charges have been filed in the death of a teenager who was shot and killed by a 12-year-old girl in Snellville.
Trevayne R. Cozart of Stone Mountain was shot in the head while visiting a 16-year-old friend Friday night.
Police said the 17-year-old Cozart was accidentally shot by the friend's younger sister. He was pronounced dead at Gwinnett Medical center on Saturday.

Gwinnett County Police spokeswoman Cpl. Illana Spellman Spellman said Monday that no charges are planned "at this time."
Spellman said a parent of the girl was home at the time but was not in the same room.

African lost in prison

Being locked away in a prison cell for nearly eight years can be terrifying for anyone. It is even worse for Ikoto Charles, an African national from Congo, who came to Jamaica to seek political asylum but was instead thrown into prison.

Charles, 28, wanted a better life when he left Africa by boat, but he never could imagine the treatment that he would receive. His experience is now almost driving him "insane".

After arriving from his long trip, Charles was arrested in Portland where he spent three months in jail before being sent to the Horizon Remand Centre in Kingston. He stayed there for five years, awaiting a deportation order. He was later transferred to the Half-Way Tree lock-up.

On Friday, he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. He was dressed in a grey merino and blue jeans shorts, with his hair unkempt.

Melrose Reid, the attorney representing Charles, said he had overstayed his time in Jamaica and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Reid added that a deportation order was made in 2005 and up to this day, Charles was still in Jamaica.

"Your Honour, I would love for my client to be deported or released and I would prefer if he was actually released then deported." Reid later said that her client was becoming senile as he had spent so many years locked away in a cell and he had no family in Jamaica to offer any support. "He is not a criminal, he just wants to go home."

Reid told the court that she became aware of Charles' situation when she was visiting another client in custody. She said she heard him speaking with an African accent saying, "What happen to me? Look how long mi in here." At this point in July 2007, Reid said she decided to represent Charles free of cost.

RM Brown was quite sympathetic. He told Reid he wanted to help Charles; however, the immigration laws require that he had some form of documentation showing his place of birth before he could be deported. Brown ordered that a psychiatric evaluation be done on Charles and the matter will be mentioned again on August 22.

Gilbert Morgan's apology to his wife Marilyn in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday was enough to spare him a jail sentence. Morgan was accused of assaulting his wife, after they got into an argument at their home. The two are Rastafarian. While Gilbert only went as far as to say his wife was upset that he had the visitors over, Marilyn went into further details. She told RM Glen Brown that she had come home for a break from a convention she was visiting at a nearby church when she discovered her husband's 'visitors' having sex in the house on her bed. She said her robust disapproval of the act led to a fight between her and her husband. Gilbert, however, said that the bed was a 'visitor's bed' located in the visitor's room of the house. RM Brown gave Gilbert a stern warning, telling him that the only reason he was being let off the hook this easy was because the couple's 12-year-old daughter was not at home to witness the fight. Gilbert then apologised to his wife before the courts and both were allowed to leave.

Anger management was definitely lacking in the case of a Pink Lane, Kingston woman who was arraigned in court this week for throwing boiling water her eight year old childs face.

Remanded in custody after appearing before the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Court yesterday, the woman, Ann Marie Scott, 28, faces assault and wounding charges.

Scott allegedly got extremely irate upon discovering that her eight year old daughter had misplaced a ring that was a gift from her father. Police reported that the incident took place on July 29 and following an investigation by detectives of the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse, she was officially charged.

Dumbfounded when asked to explain her actions by senior Magistrate Glen Brown, Scotts actions against her child were outlined by family members who helplessly witnessed the vicious attack.

Reports given by them to police describe how Scott first started beating her eight year old with a mop stick, threatening all the time to burn the child. Despite the familys attempts to stop the assault, Scott followed through with her threats by boiling water in the microwave and throwing it on her childs face, shoulders and legs.

The child was released into her fathers custody after spending almost two weeks in the Bustamante Hospital for children, where she was treated for severe burns.

Treasure managed to balance all of this scheduling, while still traveling the globe with her sound system 360 Ladies and co hosting as a VJ on Dancehall World TV in NYC.

She isn't all talent and beauty. Treasure, a former regular beauty pageant contestant and winner, is all brains too! While pursuing her major, a degree in broadcasting and communications, and a minor in African studies she obtained a 4.0 in her studies.

Treasure says during her most stressful days, playing her sound and being a dj has been the most rewarding. 360 recently made their 2nd appearance at Fully Loaded for a short but energetic set and the all female sound supplied the crowds' stint of satisfaction. Relocating her sound system, is also part of the new venture of projects that Treasure has in store. Already joining the HYPE TV family as a presenter and producer Treasure states that HYPE TV is just the beginning of her professional projects. She is currently the new A&R for an exclusive digital album production deal set to be released in 2009. She promises this project will be productively effective for all involved and promises to be one of her top priorities.

Her most recent accomplishment was when producers of the movie "Bashment- A Fork in the Road" casted her to appear as a supporting actress as Eve in the motion picture film "The Roaming Lion". She will be returning to NY this fall to make appearances in the promotion as the movie is being released on DVD after a sold out box office premier.

In weeks to come she will return to the United States to mc/ host events in NJ and CA, and continue to tour with 360 Ladies to NY, FL, VA and the Bahamas.

As well, Treasure says she is excited and confidant about the move and about joining as HYPE TV as their newest VJ.

Husband leaks affair secret in his sleep

A Chinese man leaked the address of his secret lover while talking during his sleep.

His wife Cao, of Nanjing, said she suspected her husband was up to something.

She revealed: "He became cold to me, and when his phone rang, he would walk out to answer it."

However, her husband revealed exactly what he was up to during his sleep.

"I tried to have a conversation with him, and he told me the name and address unconsciously," said the wife.

Cao said she brought up the matter with her husband the next day, but he denied it.

However, when she visited the address she was shocked to discover her husband there with his lover.
