ATHLETES CAUSE PEACEFUL DAY

August 21, 2008
Started By STUWY7716 Comments

With Usain Bolt and Melanie Walker making history at the 2008 Beijing Olympics yesterday, Jamaica enjoyed another great moment, having recorded another murder-free day.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network there were no reports of murders in the country yesterday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields said the day was another commendable one in the nation's history, attributing it to the heightened happiness Jamaicans were overcome by following the athletes' stellar performances. He pleaded that the nation should strive to make this the norm and not a novelty but continue the already established unity.

Euphoric mood

Bishop Peter Morgan of Kingston City Church also echoed a similar view. "I'm very happy to have discovered that no murders were reported yesterday. The euphoric mood that the nation is now in, probably has something to do with this," he said. Bishop Morgan, however, bemoaned that the Olympics in Beijing would soon come to an end, taking away the current togetherness and possibly leading the nation back down the *lo**y path.

Nonetheless, he said the success of our athletes, some of whom are from depressed communities, proves that good things and people can come from such communities, which stretch the length and breadth of the country. He also continued that having not recorded any murders yesterday demonstrated that we could express more care and love for one another as a nation, living peaceably ultimately.

Social anthropologist at the University of the West Indies, Dr Herbert Gayle, said he was not surprised that yesterday was murder free. In fact he said he had predicted it. "I'm not surprised at all. I told somebody that it would have been a murder-free day," he said.

He noted that the joy from the Olympic success was the glue that had kept the segmented society united yesterday, allowing for a murder-free day. The anthropologist explained that when human beings are provided with an alternative to violence, they usually take it, and the Olympic success provided just that.

He continued that in order for such days to become weeks, the leaders needed to put more emphasis on seriously providing alternatives to violence for the nation and its youth.

CHATSWORTH, Ont. - An 18-year-old woman from Guelph, Ont., is facing charges after she allegedly stripped naked on a highway, ran into a cow pasture and threw mud and feces at police officers.

The alleged incident occurred after police responded to a car crash on Highway 21 west of Owen Sound, Ont., on Sunday.

An officer tried to help an injured woman who exited the car, but police say she began acting irrationally.

Police say the woman smeared *lo** on the officer and then burned herself when she mounted a motorcycle belonging to someone who had also stopped to help.

The woman then allegedly took off her clothes and shoes and ran into a nearby cow pasture, where she spit at pursuing officers and flung mud and feces at them before being restrained.

One officer suffered minor scratches and abrasions.

An investigation showed the woman's vehicle had been involved in two separate fail to remain collisions earlier that day.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre for assessment.

SARAJEVO (AFP) - Bosnian police have impounded a pigeon after discovering prisoners used it to smuggle drugs into one of the country's highest security jails, an official said Thursday.

"The guards suspected the animal might be involved in drug smuggling once they noticed four prisoners visibly intoxicated shortly after the pigeon landed on a prison window," Zenica prison official Josip Pojavnik told AFP.

All four inmates had tested positive for heroin, said Pojavnik, adding disciplinary proceedings had been launched against the inmates.

The drugs, he added, had probably been stuffed into tiny bags attached to the legs of the carrier pigeon, which one of the prisoners had previously been allowed to keep as a pet in his cell.

"We suspect that the pigeon carried the drugs from Tuzla," a town around 70 kilometres (more than 40 miles) northeast of Zenica in central Bosnia, he added.

The pigeon had been taken into custody by police, who have launched an investigation aimed at identifying those who had loaded it up with the drugs.

"We do not know what to do with the pigeon, but for the time being it will remain behind bars," Pojavnik said.

The incident had prompted the prison administration to consider closing down a prisoner pigeon-breeding project established in a ward of the jail as part of a rehabilitation programme, he added.

Pojavnik insisted those birds had not been involved in the incident.

A similar case of carrier pigeons being used by prisoners was reportedly uncovered earlier this year at a jail in Brazil, where the birds were being used to deliver drugs and even mobile telephones.

At the time, Haverhill director John Depew was filming an armed robbery scene for the upcoming film "27 Down."They came in and they said, Drop the gun and I couldnt see the officer because he was behind (me), Depew said. I said, Its a movie, its a movie -- were filming a movie! The officers placed two of the actors in handcuffs, according to Depew. After a tense discussion, the crew explained the situation to the officers.Store owner Tracy Adley, who was outside when police officers arrived, said that the store was still open at the time and customers had been notified of the filming. Adley believes that one of the customers likely called police and reported the robbery as a hoax.It is improbable that someone driving by the store mistook the scene for a real hold-up, Adley said, because it would be difficult to see inside the building from a passing vehicle. The store is set back from the road and has tinted windows.Filming resumed on Sunday after the confusion was cleared up. No charges were filed against the storeowner or filmmaker. The film is scheduled to be released in January.

findImg.php?pic_size=200&table_name=news_img_tab&table_field=img_id&img_id=1749 Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt just minutes ago created history again when he sprinted to take the coveted Mens 200 meters finals against an impressive field of athletes in Beijing, China.

Bolt who was one of the favourites only had the three Americans in his way, but looking as confident as he did in the 100 meters, it was almost over from the sound of the starter's gun.  Bolts ran a superb race minus the showboating breaking Michael Johnsons' world record (19.32) with a blistering time of  19.30 seconds to become the only man to set two world records in the sprint double at an Olympics.

Second went to fellow Caribbean counterpart Churandy Martina in 19.82 and third to former Olympic champion, Shawn Crawford (19.96) after America's Wallace Spearmon was disqualified for stepping on the line.

876radio.com would also like to congratulate Melaine Walker for winning gold in the Womens 400 meters Hurdles and setting a new National and Olympic record with a time of 54.62 seconds.

In other news 876radio.com understand that since Usain Bolt won the 100 meters Mens finals and held up his Golden Puma spikes for the cameras. Sales have spikes for the coveted footwear and Puma is reporting that they have sold over two million pairs of the shoe in less than one hour.

Jamaican sprint star Usain Bolt is to receive a brand new BMW M3 from his main sponsor, Puma, the company's CEO, Jochen Zeitz, announced at a news conference in Beijing, China yesterday.

Zeitz made the announcement two days after Bolt celebrated his 22nd birthday and a day after he ran the third leg of the 4x100m to help Jamaica win the gold medal and smash the world record by posting 37.10secs.
BEIJING, China - Olympic star Usain Bolt (left) examines a model BMW M3 presented to him by Puma CEO Jochen Zeitz at a press conference with the Jamaican team yesterday. Zeitz said the athlete will soon get the actual motor car as a birthday gift from the sports goods manufacturers, sponsors of Bolt and the Jamaica Olympic team. (Photo: Bryan Cummings)

The relay win was Bolt's third gold of the 29th Olympiad, having earlier taken the 100m in a world record 9.69secs and the 200m, also in a world record 19.30secs.

"Usain, I'm not sure we can top the medals you won this week, but we didn't want you to miss out on a birthday celebration," said Zeitz. "So, we would like to present you with a special gift that we heard you've had your eye on in Jamaica. It's a fully-loaded BMW M3, and we'll be sending you the real thing when you get home."

Earlier in the news conference Zeitz, when asked why Puma chose to sponsor Bolt and Jamaica he said: "Well that is a very easy question. It used to be a difficult question, but an easy one now. Puma is a brand that wants to mix things up and push boundaries, and we have a brand personality that c****ines sport performance on one side, style, fashion, and living a positive lifestyle on the other. So we are always looking for partners who do just that. Six years ago, we felt Jamaica as a country and the athletes would represent Puma well and it paid off in a big way.

"But we do not just focus on winning. We really focus on how we perform and how we do it. That is why we have a partnership with Jamaica. Jamaica does it in style. It's a wonderful lifestyle we would all want, but don't have time to go to Jamaica.

"Bringing that feeling to the world made all the difference in the world. And if you look at how Jamaica has performed that's what has brought the country into the hearts of the world. And that was our mission. Of course, you want to win, but even if you don't win, you give your personal best and you also want to enjoy it. And as was said about the disappointment with the women's relay. it happens. Tragedy and victory are very close, and sometimes it's just a split second.

"And that's why we love Jamaica. We love sports, and that's why we picked Team Jamaica."

Asked about the accusations of showboating levelled at him after he won the 100m, Bolt said: "I talked to the other athletes. Most of them were okay with it. That's just how it goes in track and field. I'm just trying to enjoy myself, that's it. The fans are watching, and they want to know your personality, and I try to enjoy myself at all times. I won't change, and a lot of people like seeing me perform. I won't change because that's my personality."

Ten Little Mysteries

July 25, 2008
Started By DysFunktional8 Comments
Throughout history the worlds greatest thinkers have pondered the big questions in life: why are we here; is there a God; how can we know something; why does toast always land butter-side down? But philosophy and the thirst for knowledge arent just concerned with the metaphysical questions of life. They also seek to answer the mysteries of the physical worldfrom the sky above our heads to the idiosyncrasies of our own bodies. Here are ten little mysteries that have puzzled the worlds thinkers at one time or another. Science has explained most of them, but not all

Why is the sky blue?
Good question. The sky is blue because of a process called Rayleigh scattering. When light from the Sun reaches the atmosphere, it strikes the molecules in the air and is scattered in all directions. The extent to which light is scattered depends on its frequency. Blue light, which has a high frequency, is scattered many times more than other colours. As more blue light is scattered, it becomes the dominant colour, causing bright blue skies on clear days.

Why are rain clouds grey?
Its usually pretty easy to tell when its about to rain because the clouds in the sky turn an ominous grey colour. Clouds that are full of water or ice particles absorb light so that they appear grey from below. Those that contain relatively small amounts of water reflect more light, so that they appear bright white from the ground.

Why is a new moon invisible?
Just as half the Earth is always in daylight and the other half is in darkness, so around 50 per cent of the Moons surface is always illuminated by the Sun. The degree to which the sunlit portion of the Moon is visible from Earth depends on the Moons phases, which change as it orbits the Earth. In the phase called the new moon, the area of the Moon that faces the Earth is completely in shadow, so it cannot be seen.

What causes tides?
Have you ever wondered what causes the rise and fall of the tide? When the Moon is directly over a given point on the surface of the Earth, its gravity exerts a powerful pull on the water of the oceans below, causing them to rise above their normal level. Water covering the parts of the Earth furthest from the Moon is also subject to this pull, and forms another axis of high water. At both crests, the condition known as high water prevails, while along the circumference of the Earth perpendicular to the direct-opposite tidal axis, phases of low water occur.

Why do c**kerels crow at dawn?
Most birds like to take part in what is known as the "dawn chorus". For around half an hour after sunrise, birds make more noise than at any other time of day, although all birds, including c**kerels, continue to crow throughout the day. The reason for the chorus is largely territorial, and is stimulated not just by light, but also by a biological response (even c**kerels that are shut up in coops without light will crow at dawn).

Why do aeroplanes suddenly plunge during thunderstorms?
During normal flight conditions, the lift force produced by an aeroplane is equal to its weight, so the plane flies at a steady level. Most of the lift is produced by the wings, which are set at a slight angle to the oncoming wind. If the angle increases, the plane produces more lift and will climb, and if the angle decreases, the plane will descend. When a plane flies into stormy conditions, it will often encounter patches of rapidly rising or descending air. As the plane flies into these patches, the angle at which the wings meet the wind changes, causing the plane to suddenly climb or descend.

Why do leaves turn brown in autumn?
Throughout the summer months, the leaves of a deciduous tree are like miniature chemical factories. Using a process called photosynthesis, they capture energy in the form of light and convert it into chemical energy. This process is made possible by the presence of chlorophyll, the substance that gives leaves their green colour. As autumn approaches, shortening daylight hours and falling temperatures induce trees to prepare for winter. They grow a corky membrane between the branch and the leaf stem, which interferes with the flow of nutrients into the leaf. The production of chlorophyll declines, and this causes the green colour in the leaf to fade to a yellow. In some trees, such as oaks, the flow of sugar from the leaf is also inhibited; this increased concentration causes a reaction that produces chemicals called anthocyanins, a pigment which causes yellowing leaves to turn red or brown.

Why do we yawn?
The traditional explanation for this phenomenon is that its your bodys way of obtaining more oxygen when you are tired or when there is a lack of fresh air. The problem is that we dont only yawn under those circumstances. Top athletes may yawn before a big race and were just as likely to yawn when theres a plentiful supply of fresh air as when we are sitting on a crowded bus. Perhaps the answer to the next question can help

So why is yawning contagious?
If youve ever sat on a crowded bus and yawned, youve probably noticed that this causes some of your fellow passengers to yawn as well. Its almost as if yawning is contagious. The short answer is that we still dont know why yawning causes other people to yawn, but this phenomenon may help us to explain why we yawn in the first place. The fact that we are so sensitive to the impulse suggests that there must be a reason for our ability to detect and respond to other peoples yawns, but scientists have been unable to reach a conclusion. One likely explanation is that at one time in evolutionary history, yawning was a way of coordinating the social behaviour of a group.

Why do men have nipples?
Many great thinkers have pondered thiseven Aristotle had a crack at answering the conundrum! The answer is that in the first few weeks of development in the w****, male and female embryos look exactly the same. Every embryo has the potential to be either male or femalethe determining factor is the chromosomes that it carries. Chromosomes are like little packs of instructions which determine aspects of the development of an embryo, including its sex. The male embryo has an X and a Y chromosome and the female has two X chromosomes.

Bounty Back in Court

After gracing the precincts of the Montego Bay Resident Magistrates Court in 2003 for using indecent language during his performance at the 2003 staging of the annual Sumfest music festival, it was almost déjŕ vu for controversial deejay, Rodney Bounty Killer Price, who made his second appearance before the court under similar circumstances yesterday.

The 36-year-old deejay pleaded guilty to two counts of using indecent language and was find $5,000 or 30 days. In addition, Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry gave him advice to keep his performances clean as she hopes this would be his final appearance before the court.

I hope so too, Bounty Killer responded.

RM Henry also reminded him that he is a role model to many and should therefore set an example.

You are a role model like our athletes in Beijing so you need to set an example, RM Henry said.

The Killer, who is also called the Grung God, was summoned to court after his July 17 performance on dancehall night at the festival, held at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Complex. In his 20-minute set, he used expletives to vent his frustrations at the crime situation, homosexuality and other issues.

Defence attorney George Thomas said his client committed the offence as he made social commentary and thought using bad words would be an effective way of getting his point across. He said, however, that Bounty was not trying to be disrespectful and was sorry for his behaviour as he acknowledges there are other ways of venting his frustrations. He added that the artiste did not commit the offence to gain publicity or further his career and asked that the court exercise lenience.

Usain Bolt's spectacular performance at the Olympic games being held in Beijing, China, continued yesterday, and so did his dancing.

As promised, Bolt, who turns 22 years old today, showcased the 'Gully Creepa', along with a snippet of the '90s rock' after impressively running his way to a gold medal in the men's 200-metre event yesterday. He also set a new world-record mark of 19.30 seconds.

"Yu nuh si Gully Creepa gone again. Big up Mr Bolt! All farin people a call mi and a seh Gully Creepa to di worl," creator of the Gully Creepa, David 'Ice' Smith remarked when he contacted THE STAR only seconds after Bolt had done dancing.

"One more gold fi Bolt! One more gold fi di creepa! Jeeeeeeezam peace!" a clearly excited Ice added before recalling a night at the popular nightclub The Quad, in New Kingston, St Andrew.

"Before di man go weh mi an him deh a Quad a creep it dung, eno. Mi ready fi creep dung anyweh him want me an him fi creep dung. Big up Bolt again!" said the dancer who says he has already created a dance, 'Usain Bolt', in honour of the new Olympic champion.

Efforts to contact Sheldon 'Shelly Belly' Lewis, creator of the '90's rock were unsuccessful.

So, too, were numerous efforts to contact the 'Attitude Girls' of Montego Bay, St James, who some time ago created quite a buzz with their dance 'Dutty Wine'.

Melaine Walker yesterday gave a quick tease, as she did the head and neck movement associated with the dance before racing to a new Olympic record of 52.64 seconds to claim the gold medal in the women's 400-metre hurdles event.

More Olympic songs hit the airwaves

The Olympic fever is in the air. As our Jamaican athletes win more gold medals, more artistes are recording songs to help spread the spirit.

With our athletes winning gold medals and breaking Olympic and world records, artistes have only been given more inspiration to pen lyrics.

Veteran singer Derrick Harriott is no exception. His song Watch That Man Bolt was completed Tuesday night and played on radio stations yesterday.

"I was elated about the whole thing 'cause I have always been a fan of Usain. The night before I said that he was going to break the world record and that is exactly what he did," Harriott told THE STAR.

His song says, "Watch that man Bolt, he is a runaway train/Can't you see the Beijing track is on fire/Thank you Father for the Lightning Bolt/Him at 6 (feet) 5 (inches) that ain't no giant/Olympic world record 9.69/ 2008 will always be great/Whoi, it's the nice Jamaican roots/Whoi, it's the rich Jamaican herbs, Jah know/Whoi, it's all about the ital food."

However, this is not the first time that Harriott has recorded a song to support Bolt. In June he recorded another song Lightning Bolt after the track star broke the 100 metre world record in May. This song, he says, was played after Bolt's 100-metre victory on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Olympic coverage.

Radio personality Richard 'Richie B' Burgess says he also played Harriott's song and looks forward to getting more songs, from artistes.

"I am sure that we are going to get more songs as the day progresses. There is no other genre of music in which the artistes do this. They are making our history themselves by making these songs. In a number of years, we can draw back on this and reminisce," Richie B told THE STAR.

Other Olympic songs are Saba's The World's Greatest and Olympic Champion by Sadeke and Krushal. In addition, Elephant Man re-recorded Nuh Linga and Konshens re-recorded Winner; both praising Jamaican athletes for doing well at the Olympic Games.

Konshens says he decided to do a remake of Winner to express his pride in the nation and its athletes.

"I did it because wi win and mi proud. A history a create right now. So this is a tribute to them for their efforts," he said.

Yesterday, Richie B says he also played numerous songs that complement the Olympic theme. Among them are Mavado's On The Go, Sizzla's Be Strong, Bushman's Lighthouse and Shine Head's Strive.

Jamaican Olympic Heroes!

BEIJING, China - The quartet of Shericka Williams, Shereefa Lloyd, Rosemarie Whyte and Novelene Williams produced a season best three minutes 20.45 seconds to win bronze in the Women's mile relay as Jamaica ended the 29th Olympiad with a record haul of 11 medals yesterday.

It was Jamaica's third consecutive medal in the Women's 4x400m relay following silver in Sydney 2000 and bronze in Athens 2004.

Anchored by Jamaican-born Sanya Richards, the USA team posted 3:18.54 to beat Russia by 0.28 seconds into silver.
Shericka Williams, who was collecting her second medal at these Games after bagging silver in the flat 400m, told the Sunday Observer the team tried to deliver a seventh gold for the country.

"USA and Russia came a bit stronger than us, so we can't complain," she said.

"We did our season best, which is good for the team, so we cannot complain," added Williams, who ran the first leg.

The MVP quarter-miler ended the Games as one of only three Jamaicans who collected two or more medals. Usain Bolt, who collected three gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relays - all in world record times - as well as Kerron Stewart, who took the 100m silver and bronze in the 200m, are the other two athletes.

Meanwhile, Jamaica's Men's mile relay team of Michael Blackwood, Ricardo Chambers, Sanjay Ayre and Lanceford Spence finished a disappointing eight and last in 3:01.45 - more than a second slower than their season best 3:00.09 that they posted to qualify from the semifinals.

Spence, who replaced Allodin Fothergill in the line-up, faded badly from fifth position to last.

It was the second straight Olympics that the Jamaican men failed to make the podium as the USA team of LaShawn Merritt, Angelo Taylor, David Neville and Jeremy Wariner collected the gold in an Olympic record 2:55.39, ahead of Bahamas (2:58.03) and Russia (2:58.06).

In the meantime, the six gold, three silver and two bronze ensured that the nation of 2.7 million people finished in third position in the athletics medal table behind the United States, who won both mile relays top the standings with 23 - seven gold, nine silver and seven bronze.

The 11 medals accumulated in Beijing lifted Jamaica's tally of medals to 54 - 14 gold, 24 silver and 16 bronze - in track & field since first appearing at the 1948 London Games.

Technical leader of Jamaica's 52-member athletics team, Donald Quarrie, told the Sunday Observer that all members of the delegation contributed to the unprecedented success here in China.

"The athletes did well, as did the management team and coaching staff to keep everything together," the 1976 Olympics 200m gold medallist said.

President of the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), Mike Fennell, also congratulated all winners and finalists at these Olympics, which has been dubbed by many as the "Jamaica Games" based on the nation's success.

"From the gold medal to the world records, everything was special," Fennell said.

Minister of Sports Olivia 'Babsy' Grange spoke of plans to set up a Centre of Excellence at GC Foster College to ensure that Jamaican athletes continue to perform well on the international stage.

"We intend to make sure that the infrastructure is put in place to maintain the nursery of talent on the island," Grange disclosed.

Another card said: To my darling CJ. Well miss your smile so much. RIP babe. Love you always, Karen and Natalie. A further tribute said: To CJ, I will never forget you. You will always be there in my memories, in my heart. You will be missed. Words cannot say. RIP. Luke and family. One of the two arrested - a 17-year-old - received hospital treatment for a minor slash wound to the arm before being taken to an east London police station. The other person arrested, in his late teens or early 20s, was also taken to an east London police station, police said. Police also today launched a murder inquiry after a 21-year-old man died from serious injuries. West Midlands Police said they had cordoned off parts of the centre of Wolverhampton after the man was found with serious injuries at 4am today. He was taken to New Cross hospital where he later died. A police spokeswoman said: A murder inquiry has been launched. A number of locations in the Wolverhampton city centre area have been secured for forensic examination. Police said the man was not shot but did not say how he died or where he was attacked.

"IS PURE red eye and 'grudgefulness'. They just can't come to terms with the fact that not only has this little boy won the double sprint, but he did it in world record time," said Prime Minister Bruce Golding as he blasted critics of Usain Bolt yesterday.

In the last week, the world's fastest man and Jamaica's knight in shining armour of the 2008 Olympics, Bolt, has been criticised for showboating after winning the 100 metres in fine style in Beijing, China.

One of the strongest criticisms came from president of the International Olympic Council (IOC) Jacques Rogge, who said Bolt disrespected his opponents while showboating.

Rogge's comments were complemented by NBC commentor Bob Costas, who said Bolt was not only disrespectful to his competitors, but also to the Olympic Games and to the fans, who deserved to see him at his best.

Fellow NBC commentator, Trinidadian Ato Boldon went even further: "It was a display that should not have been there," he said. "You kids at home, this is not how you behave as an Olympic champion."

But, Prime Minister Golding, at a 'Gold Breakfast' celebration at Pier One restaurant in Montego Bay, yesterday morning defended the 22-year-old athlete.

"Some people just feel that kind of glory doesn't belong to a little country like Jamaica. Tell dem to tek weh demself," he said.

Announcement

The Prime Minister also said a "very important" announcement would be made soon, regarding the welfare of the athletes. "They will be a priority of this government," he said.

He said one of the things brought to his attention by former Olympian Juliet Cuthbert was that, "sometimes athletes suffer injury and cannot afford to accept the treatment offered to them. That is something we have to look at".

He also said the particular circumstances of the athletes and their families must be looked at. Noting that although this was a tall order, he was working to put together a framework.

Rumour has it that Miami Dolphins Coach Bill Parcell is interested in trying out the 6 foot 4 Olympic Champion Usain Bolt for the NFL.

It is reported that Parcell has always joked about trying out Bolt, but sources say that a scout for the Miami Dolphins is on his way to China to hold discussions with Usain's manager. So is it fact or rumour?

Hmm them a try break the man already...hmm

Today the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Jacques Rogge had stiff criticism for Jamaican record breaking sprinter Usain Bolt.

According to the Associated Press the former Olympic yachtsman who hails from Belgium told a small group of reporters that he did not consider Bolts "doing a show" following his historic win as being respectful of the other competitors in his race.

The elated and proud Bolt danced, did his victory run around the field draped in the Jamaican flag, beat his chest in glee and even declared that he was number one using finger gestures in a television close-up; however Rogge felt that somehow Bolt was not entitled to express himself as his personality and possibly as his culture dictated.

Rogge
told three international reporters that Bolt should have acknowledged the others who raced with him by even giving them a tap on the shoulder immediately after finishing first, rather than showing his joy and pride in the way he did, especially af

He continued to criticize Bolt saying, that his actions were not the actions of a good sportsman or true champion saying, "He (Bolt) might have interpreted that (his joy) in another way, but the way it was perceived was "catch me if you can." You don't do that. But he'll learn. He's still a young man."

Comparing bolt to the 1930s great athlete Jesse Owens, Rogge said further, "He should shake hands with his competitors and not ignore them. He'll learn that sooner or later. But (he's) a great athlete, of course."

f**k THAT!!!!, DI MAN A SHOW HIM CULTURE AND HAPPINESS... BADRASTA ENTERTAINMENT continually congratulates Bolt and all the athletes who are doing well; and would like to say, "Stay strong bolt and dont watch nuh face!"

MediaTakeOut.com just caught wind that during a recent interview on the radip show Lip Sevice, rapper Young Berg claimed that he's not into dark skinned black women - or dark butts as he calls them. Here's a transcript of his words: I'm kinda racist ... I don't like dark butts .... You know how some women prefer light skin men or dark skin men. It's rare that I do dark butts - that's what I call dark skinned women ... I [don't date women] darker than me. I love the pool test. Beenie Man Apologise To Capleton

August 20, 2008

findImg.php?pic_size=200&table_name=news_img_tab&table_field=img_id&img_id=1743 After delivering a stellar performance at Capleton's 'St. Mary Mi Come From' days earlier,  Beenie Man then turned his attention to his own production 'Beenie Sizzle' where He, Vybz Kartel, Monster Empire an a few others delivered some great  sets.

Immediately following the show the doctor did an on-camera interview where he vowed never to attend any event(s) being promoted by fellow entertainer Capleton.

876radio.com understands that the dancehall doctor was upset because Capleton who was billed for the event was a no show and as such he felt betrayed.

In the midst of Beenie's interview, Capleton showed up at the venue and was thoroughly informed about the doctors decision. However Capleton was quick to point out that it was neither sabotage nor disrespect and blamed his absence on the fact that his brother was missing and so an emergency search had to be organised to locate him.

Minutes later Beenie Man and Capleton were seen conversing and after learning of the Fireman's circumstances an apology was issued. Beenie said he was just upset and got caught up in the moment when he made the remarks.

On a happier note the brother of Capleton was found stranded on the roadside, but details are still sketchy as to how he went missing initially.
ROME - An Italian priest and theologian said Sunday he is organizing an online beauty pageant for nuns to give them more visibility within the Catholic Church and to fight the stereotype that they are all old and dour.

The "Miss Sister 2008" contest will start in September on a blog run by the Rev. Antonio Rungi and will give nuns from around the world a chance to showcase their work and their image.

"Nuns are a bit excluded, they are a bit marginalized in ecclesiastical life," Rungi told The Associated Press after Italian media carried reports of the idea. "This will be an occasion to make their contribution more visible."

Rungi, a theologian and schoolteacher from the Naples area, said that visitors to his site will have a month to "vote for the nun they consider a model."

Nuns will fill out a profile including information about their life and vocation as well as a photograph. It will be up to them to choose whether to pose with the traditional veil or with their heads uncovered.

"We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits," Rungi said by telephone from his town of Mondragone. "But being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn't hide it."

Rungi said the idea was first suggested to him by nuns with whom he regularly prays and works. He hopes there will be dozens of submissions once the Web site is started.

The contest drew criticism from the association of Catholic teachers.

"It's an initiative that belittles the role of nuns who have dedicated themselves to God," the group's president, Alberto Giannino, told Italy's ANSA news agency on Sunday.

Monster Teams Up With Assassin

findImg.php?pic_size=200&table_name=news_img_tab&table_field=img_id&img_id=1737 Girls Gone Wild, one of Assassins most popular songs to date, showed his skill and versatility as it helped propel him onto the international scene, enabling his prowess and presence to be recognized both locally and abroad. The song was complimented with a ground breaking music video directed by the famed guru of music concepts, Ras Kassa, birthing a video which explicitly depicts the lyrics of the song.

Renowned for his versatile style and song writing skills, Assassin has also added to his resume entrepreneurship, birthing a weekly night event called Girls Gone Wild held every Tuesday at Weekenz Bistro.  Since its inception, his management team has recently signed a sponsorship agreement with Wisynco-Group Limited who will now participate as co-title sponsor with Assassin of the event, through their popular energy drink Monster Energy.

Gareth Campbell, Assassins manager notes that this is an exciting partnership for both parties, as we have so much to deliver to the public through our partnership.  Monster Energy drink epitomizes the essence of the vibe and brand that we are building for our event, and we cant wait for the re-launch.

The event will relaunch as Monster Energy and Assassin presents Girls Gone Wild Tuezdayz and will take place on Tuesday August 19th at Weekenz Bistro, Kingston, Jamaica, and will open as a costume party themed, Pimpz and Hos, seeing the male with the most female guests and most fitting outfit being given the Pimp Award and the foxiest female guest and sexiest lady being awarded.

According to Campbell, the concept of the event is to allow the female patrons the freedom/opportunity to take back the dancehall and bring back the feel good aspect of the music and vibe of true dancehall.  Right ya nowwe a si bare man a tek ova di gyal dem spot and while wi can si their creativity and love it, we need fi have a nice time wid di ladies dem. The last mi si a dat was Dyma wid dutty wine and mi know nuff more Dyma out deh and a dat Assassin an we wah bring out.  Di girl dem full a energy and a jus dat we a support fi da nite deh.

Kimberly Lawson, PR, Sponsorship and Events manager for Wisynco Group Limited sees this event as a platform to acquire a greater share of our target market. We love the concept of energetic girls who will, through fun, frolic and entertainment bring back the missing element of dancehall; its a great idea to host a ladies night and offer Monster Energy to all attendees.

Activities slated for the re-launch will be the Monster Energy Silhouette Screen, the Money Machine Hour, Free Hennessy for all before 12, Money Maker Stripper Pole, and the Wet T-shirt competition along with live performances from Mavado, Serani, Elephant Man, Aidonia, Pamputtae and Bragga Dat.. There will also be loads of prizes and giveaways. The dapper-est Pimp outfit will receive an award; the Sexiest Ho outfit will be awarded $10,000 and many more activities.  Miss Kitty will be there as stage host for the night to vibes things up in her very own fluffy style. Men are free before 12am, $300 after, and Ladies are free all night

Girls Gone Wild Tuezdayz seeks to differentiate it self from the host of other weekly events using its concepts and strategies to cater mainly to the females and then the men in the effort of stamping its prestige as a premiere weekly girls outlet dancehall.

Mavado drives Grand Theft Auto launch
Mavado drives Grand Theft Auto launch

Movado32225.JPG

Dancehall artist Mavado is set to perform at the launch of the new Grand Theft Auto video game in Manhattan. "Grand Theft Auto 4 is being launched in Manhattan in May and Mavado is scheduled to perform at the launch alongside Busta Rhymes and others," his manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, told The STAR. Mavado's song, Real McKoy, was included in one of the trailers for the new Grand Theft Auto video game developed by Rockstar North.

Grand Theft Auto IV will be simultaneously available for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and will be in stores worldwide on April 29, 2008.

According to Jones-Griffiths, this was indeed a huge step for dancehall music, as millions across the world are purchasers of the Xbox video game. Thus, Real McKoy and other dancehall tracks will be marketed on a large scale worldwide through this venture.

"It's a huge look for Mavado and for dancehall in general, as the trailer and the game reach millions and millions of people all over the globe. I have since spoken to the people at Rockstar Games and they are very interested in licensing more tracks from the Alliance. I am in talks with them about a music production deal for one of their other major titles, as well as getting Bounty and Mavado to appear as characters in the game," Jones-Griffith said.

Fan fiction

But just how did Mavado land a deal like this?

"We were approached by Bobby Konders, who hosts one of the radio shows on the Grand Theft Auto Game that play in the cars the character can drive in the game," his manager said.

"Mavado, as did Bounty Killer, did some specials for Bobby's radio station but I later found out that the founder and many of the staff at Rockstar Games are huge Mavado fans! When Bobby delivered the tracks to them, they immediately used Real McKoy for one of the trailers for the game, which has seven million pre-sold orders already, and the song is a perfect fit for the trailer."

Based on its website, the new Grand Theft Auto is all about what the American dream means today. And 'for characters Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from Europe, it is the hope he can escape his past. And for his cousin, Roman, it is the vision that together they can find fortune in Liberty City, gateway to the land of opportunity.'

The website, in further previewing what happens in the game, says, 'as they slip into debt and are dragged into a criminal underworld by a series of shysters, thieves and socio-paths, they discover that the reality is very different from the dream in a city that worships money and status, and is heaven for those who have them and a living nightmare for those who don't.'

PHARRELL REMOVING HIS TATTOOS?

According to hiphopdx.com, the N.E.R.D frontman revealed this week to Brittish Vogue that his tattoos no longer fit his lifestyle and so he is trying a revolutionary new tattoo removal procedure, which involves applying replicated skin over old body art.

"It's basically like getting a skin graft, but you're not taking skin from your ass or your legs. These guys actually grow the skin for you," he explained. "First you have to give them a sample of your skin, which they then replicate. Once that's been done, they sew it on - and it's seamless."

The current--and most common-- form of tattoo removal is laser treatment which is not only a lengthy process, but excruciatingly painful. The new grafting procedure should be a faster, less painful alternative.

Sound pricey? That's because it is. While Pharrell wouldn't give exact numbers, he did say that regardless of the price he plans to go ahead with the procedure:

"It's going to be pricey, but worth it," "I got fire on my arms! I'm a grown man!"

Multi-platinum rapper 50 Cent is suing Taco Bell for over $1 million due to the companys unauthorized usage of his name, trademarks, and overall persona in their national advertising campaign.

According to Dow Jones, the lawsuit was filed Wednesday (July 23) in Manhattan claiming the fast food chain presented a fake letter asking 50, born Curtis Jackson, to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent for their Why Pay More Value Menu to the media before it reached the rapper.

It accuses Taco Bell of allowing the G-Unit leaders name to circulate amongst national media giving the restaurant additional exposure without his approval.

Thus, without authorization, Taco Bell traded on the name of the worlds biggest hip-hop star to draw attention to its new hip-hop based advertising campaign, it read. [A]nd thereby generated massive publicity for its business.

The companys campaign featured various hip-hop themed advertisements including a Rap Name Creator allowing consumers the chance to view their own rap name along with a Why Pay Mo Rhyme Generator that displayed various hip-hop music and images.

Claiming that Taco Bell knew they could not afford 50s price for endorsement, the lawsuit also accuses them of intentionally making the endorsement and benefiting from its open exposure.

Taco Bell knew that it would likely have had to pay Jackson a multi-million dollar fee to get his endorsement, even if he had agreed to do itwhich is in doubt, it read. Rather than face rejection or pay fair value, Taco Bell chose to steal his endorsement and to enjoy all the publicity of being associated with a mega-star while bearing none of the costs.

Damages to 50s reputation include his appearance of selling out due to consumers believing he may have, in fact, endorsed the Taco Bell campaign.

Insurance To Cost More For People Who Don't Try

Scale

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabama, pushed to second in national obesity rankings by deep-fried Southern favorites, is cracking down on state workers who are too fat.

The state has given its 37,527 employees a year to start getting fit or they'll pay $25 a month for insurance that otherwise is free.

Alabama will be the first state to charge overweight state workers who don't work on slimming down, while a handful of other states reward employees who adopt healthy behaviors.
Alabama already charges workers who smoke and has seen some success in getting them to quit but now has turned its attention to a problem that plagues many in the Deep South: obesity.
The State Employees' Insurance Board this week approved a plan to charge state workers starting in January 2010 if they don't have free health screenings.
If the screenings turn up serious problems with *lo** pressure, cholesterol, glucose or obesity, employees will have a year to see a doctor at no cost, enroll in a wellness program or take steps on their own to improve their health. If they show progress in a follow-up screening, they won't be charged. But if they don't, they must pay starting in January 2011.
"We are trying to get individuals to become more aware of their health," said state worker Robert Wagstaff, who serves on the insurance board.
Not all state employees see it that way.
"It's terrible," said health department employee Chequla Motley. "Some people come into this world big."
Computer technician Tim Colley already pays $24 a month for being a smoker and doesn't like the idea of another charge.
"It's too Big Brotherish," he said.
The board will apply the obesity charge to anyone with a body mass index of 35 or higher who is not making progress. A person 5 feet 6 inches tall weighing 220 pounds, for example, would have a BMI of 35.5. A BMI of 30 is considered the threshold for obesity.
The board has not yet determined how much progress a person would have to show and is uncertain how many people might be affected because everyone could avoid the charge by working to lose weight.
But that's unlikely: Government statistics show Alabamians have a big weight problem. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30.3 percent are now obese, ranking the state behind only Mississippi.
E.K. Daufin of Montgomery, a college professor and founder of Love Your Body, Love Yourself, which holds body acceptance workshops, said the new policy will be stressful for people like her.
"I'm big and beautiful and doing my best to keep my stress levels down so I can stay healthy," Daufin said. "That's big, not lazy, not a glutton and certainly not deserving of the pompous, poisonous disrespect served up daily to those of us with more bounce to the ounce."
A recent study suggested that about half of overweight people and nearly a third of obese people have normal *lo** pressure and cholesterol levels, while about a quarter of people considered to be normal weight suffer from the ills associated with obesity.
Walter Lindstrom, founder of the Obesity Law and Advocacy Center in California, said he's concerned that all overweight Alabama employees will get is advice to walk more and broil their chicken.
"The state will feel good about itself for offering something and the person of size will end up paying $300 a year for the bad luck of having a chronic disease his/her state-sponsored insurance program failed to cover in an appropriate and meaningful fashion," he said.
William Ashmore, executive director of the State Employees' Insurance Board, said the state will spend an extra $1.6 million next year on screenings and wellness programs, but should see significant long-term savings.
Ashmore said research shows someone with a body mass index of 35 to 39 generates $1,748 more in annual medical expenses than someone with a BMI less than 25, considered normal.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, a few states offer one-time financial incentives for pursuing healthy lifestyles. Ohio workers, for instance, get $50 for having health assessments and another $50 for following through with the advice.
Arkansas and Missouri go a step further, offering monthly discounts on premiums for employees who take health risk assessments and participate in wellness programs to reduce obesity, stress and other health problems.
Alabama's new policy is drawing no objection from the lobbying group representing state workers.
Mac McArthur, executive director of Alabama State Employees Association, said the plan is not designed to punish employees.
"It's a positive," he said.

The Dancehall diva recently rocked her fans at the Jamrock Reggae Fest held at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City alongside Beenie Man and Mr. Vegas.

The sexy siren also stormed through Boston's Club Lido performing alongside the energy god, Elephant Man and had all the ladies singing her anthem, 'Waiting' as well as other favorites such as 'Can U Do Di Wuk?' and 'Aint Nutten For Free', but it was her underground hit 'P**** Good' that had the ladies screaming in agreement.

She also performed at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester, New York on the same bill as Shaggy, Daville and Elephant Man, where again 'P**** Good' was once again the crowd favourite.

Ce'Cile left the island earlier today for a Turks & Caicos stint Friday, and then it's off to Europe for a month-long tour to promote the European release of her album, 'Bad Gyal'.

While in Europe, she will perform at the major reggae festivals on that continent. A PREMATURE tot hailed a miracle for surviving a traffic accident that killed his pregnant mum has tragically died a week after bystanders banded together to lift a school bus off her.

Sean Michael Justin Sanz had been in intensive care since he was delivered by emergency Caesarean section on August 14.

He weighed just 3lb 6oz (1.53 kilograms) at birth.

His mother, Donnette Sanz, survived the delivery but died in an emergency operating room. She was seven months pregnant.

The van hit Donnette when she was crossing a Bronx street on her lunch break.

The impact sent her flying into the path of a yellow school bus and she was pinned beneath it.

About 30 bystanders rushed to the scene and hoisted the five-tonne bus from her body in a rescue that made the front pages of the citys newspapers.

The tot's dad was mourning his double loss.

Rafael Sanz said of his tiny son: He meant everything to me. He died in my arms."

And in an interview published hours before the infants death, he spoke about how his deep love for his son was mingled with grief over his wifes death.

Horrible

Rafael said she had donated a kidney to him shortly before their wedding four years ago.

She never got to see our baby, but she was in love with him, he said.

And the dad slammed the van driver: I hope he really does rot in hell. I hope he dies a horrible death.

Relatives said the boy would be buried with his mother.

Mayor Michael Blo****erg offered his condolences to the babys father.

He said: From the moment last Thursday when Donnette was struck down, scores of New Yorkers pulled together as one to try to save her and her still-unborn child.

The bystanders who heroically rescued Donnette from under a school bus in the Bronx didnt just lift five tonnes of glass and steel - they also lifted the spirits of our entire city.

Donnette had been a civilian member of the NYPD for two years.

The 72-year-old van driver, Walter Walker, faces charges of criminally negligent homicide and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Walkers lawyer, Michael Torres, said his client had not entered a plea.

He said Walker was devastated" by what happened but didnt know whether he was aware of the childs death.

Walker has a long history of driving offences and arrests dating to the 1980s.

Police said he has had his licence suspended 20 times.

In a court filing, police said the brakes on Walkers van had deteriorated so badly it was unsafe to drive.

Walker has said he tried to avoid hitting Sanz but was unable to stop.

Jamaica's Usain Bolt poses

BEIJING Usain Bolt spotted the TV cameraman, darted over and raised his index finger for millions of viewers to see.

I am No. 1, he said. I am No. 1.

His boast qualifies as an understatement.

Wednesday night, when Bolt cemented his status as the worlds No. 1 sprinter, he also emerged as tracks Tiger Woods, Wayne Gretzky and Michael Jordan. Anyone who disputes that the Jamaican star belongs in that transcendent class better brush up on track history and prepare to lose the argument.

In a space of four days here, Bolt became the first man to break the world record in the 100- and 200-meter sprints in the same Olympics since the Games resumed in 1896. Its worth noting who doubted it would happen, too.

Michael Johnson, who set the world record in the 200 when he ran it in 19.32 seconds at the 1996 Olympics, spoke to reporters before the finals Wednesday and explained why he thought Bolt was not yet ready to break his record.

To run a 19.3, hes going to have to run the curve a lot better, hes going to have to hold that speed for a very, very long time, Johnson said. Thats not the most easy thing to do, even for him.

Chances are, Johnson was spot-on with his assessment even though Bolt went out hours later and broke Johnsons record when he covered 200 meters in 19.30 seconds. Bolt can improve his speed on the curve, which will only fuel his astonishing progression.

Already, Bolt has broken three world records in less than three months......WOW!!!

In May, he lowered the 100 record to 9.72 seconds from 9.74 seconds less than six months after he started running the event as a professional. He then broke that record in Sundays final, winning in 9.69 seconds despite coasting for the final 20 meters. Up against the worlds top sprinters, Bolt looked like he was competing against schoolchildren.

It was the most impressive athletic performance Ive ever seen in my life, Johnson said.

During the 200 final, there was no early celebration. This was Bolt at top speed from start to finish. This was Bolt competing less against the seven helpless other sprinters entered in the race than against Johnsons 12-year-old record.

With no one within five meters of Bolt down the stretch, there he was, arms still pumping, legs still driving, straining to sustain his speed. He leaned as he reached the finish line, glanced at the clock on his left and thrust his arms in the air.

The record was Bolts, one day before his 22nd birthday. With that, he became the first man to simultaneously hold the world records in the 100 and 200 since Don Quarrie held both in 1979, and he became the first man to win the gold in the 100 and 200 at the same Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984.

Michael Johnson is a great athlete and he revolutionized the sport, Bolt said after the 200 final. I just changed it a little bit.

Despite all of his showboating, Bolts assessment fails to capture what he has done and can do for sprinting.

At 6-foot-5, Bolt has defied conventional wisdom that he was too tall for the 100. He has learned to burst out of the starting blocks as fast as the smaller and more compact sprinters, and his long stride gives him a sizable advantage. He needs only 40 to 41 strides to cover 100 meters whereas most 100-meter sprinters need 46 to 47 strides.

Bolts turnover the speed with which his feet hit the ground is as fast as smaller sprinters, meaning hes virtually impossible to catch.

Hes been able to take the long stride he has and been able to coordinate that and achieve a very long stride, Johnson said before the 200 final. That c****ination is deadly, as the people in (the 100 final) found out.

Is Usain Bolt the best sprinter ever? As the Games approach a close, let the debate begin. But one thing is beyond debate: You can feel comfortable mentioning his name in the same breath as Gretzky, Jordan and Woods.
Mavado Confirmed For Irie Jamboree 0 Comment written below 876radio.com has just received some information that dancehall bad boy Mavado has been confirmed for next week Sunday's staging of IRIE Jamboree at Roy Wilkins Park, Queens NY. The Gangster made his decision to be a part of the huge event on Friday and is expected to ignite the venue with his performance. Mavado has not performed in the U.S. for over 6 months and and his multitude of fans are currently yearning for his return. "IRIE Jamboree will give me the perfect opportunity to reach thousands of my fans one time," said Mavado. "With the glory that Jamaican athletes have brought us at the Olympics we are all going to celebrate at the show next week Sunday. Its going to be history, that's all I can say." Other confirmed acts include King Yellow, Beenieman, Alison Hinds, the "Queen of Soca," Coco Tea, Sizzla, Elephant Man and rising reggae stars Serani, Admiral Bailey, Bugle, DeMarco, Konshens, Tanya Mullings, Little Hero, RDX, Elvis D, Ragga Lox, Empire Isis, Benny Bwoy, Lushy Banton, Prestige and others. A unique feature of this year's festival is that the entire event will be a tribute to all Caribbean athletes who competed at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. "Our company, and especially our radio division, Irie Jam Radio has a long history of participation in track & field athletics, and when we looked at the jaw-dropping, gravity-defying performances in Beijing, it was really the logical move to dedicate this year's festival to our athletes", Bobby Clarke, CEO of Irie Jam Radio commented. A special Usain Bolt tent will be established at the event and it will be appropriately dressed in Jamaican colors and used as one of the VIP suites. This effort of setting up the Usain Bolt tent will be supported by Digicel, one of the lead sponsors for Irie Jamboree. This follows on the close relationships between Usain, Digicel and Irie Jam Radio at the Reebok Grand Prix in late May when Usain first created pandemonium by smashing Asafa Powell's sprint record to become a contender for the title of the fastest man on earth. The organisers will also work with sponsors Western Union, Pay-o-matic and Grace Kennedy to decorate the "Veronica Campbell-Brown" Media Tent which will honor our Olympic Queens at the event. The food court will also be re-named the "Caribbean Olympic Village" to honor all Caribbean athletes who competed at the Olympic Games this year. Irie Jamboree is also expected to be a media feeding frenzy for international music press, with journalists coming from Japan, Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and all across North America.

Will Smith says the secret to a happy marriage is "lots of sex".

The Hancock star - who is married to Jada Pinkett Smith - insists a healthy sex life is the key to a successful relationship.

When asked how he keeps his 11-year marriage fresh, Will replied: "Lots of sex. All the time, every day. Just lots of sex keeps me going good!"

Will also revealed it wasn't until three months into his relationship with Jada - the mother of two of his three children - that he realised she was the one for him.

He added to FOX News: "I was very interested that first night, but I was in a bizarre mental space. Three months into it we were at her mom's house and it just hit me. I looked at her and just knew this was it."

The 39-year-old actor recently revealed Jada must be prepared to have "lots of sex" if he decides to take a career break. He said: "I've been working a lot the last couple of years. My wife has said we have to take the next five months off. I enjoy my job, I really enjoy working. She might need to be prepared to have lots of sex!"

"How colorful is this guy? He can crush his Olympic sprint competition, set world records and entertain the house all at the same time. He has done everything this side of moonwalking while finishing off his unworthy foes. Compared to Bolt, golden-shoed Michael Johnson handled his business like an accountant.

Naturally, stuffy IOC president Jacques Rogge was appalled by the young man's theatrics. "I have no problem with him doing a show," Rogge told reporters. "I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters.""

Men Who Do Housework May Get More Sex: Report

Men Who Do Housework May Get More Sex: Report

Thursday March 6, 2008

Men still don't pull their weight when it comes to housework and child care, but collectively they're not the slackers they used to be. The average dad has gradually been getting better about picking himself up off the sofa and pitching in, according to a new report in which a psychologist suggests the payoff for doing more chores could be more sex.

The report, released Thursday by the Council on Contemporary Families, summarizes several recent studies on family dynamics. One found that men's contribution to housework had doubled over the past four decades; another found they tripled the time spent on child care over that span.

"More couples are sharing family tasks than ever before, and the movement toward sharing has been especially significant for full-time dual-earner couples," the report says. "Men and women may not be fully equal yet, but the rules of the game have been profoundly and irreversibly changed."

Some couples have forged partnerships they consider fully equitable.

"We'll both talk about how we're so lucky to have someone who does more than their share," said Mary Melchoir, a Washington-based fundraiser for the National Organization for Women, who - like her lawyer husband - works full-time while raising 6-year-old triplets.

"He's the one who makes breakfast and folds the laundry," said Melchoir, 47. "I'm the one who fixes things around the house."

Joshua Coleman, a San Francisco-area psychologist and author of "The Lazy Husband: How to Get Men to Do More Parenting and Housework," said equitable sharing of housework can lead to a happier marriage and more frequent sex.

"If a guy does housework, it looks to the woman like he really cares about her - he's not treating her like a servant," said Coleman, who is affiliated with the Council on Contemporary Families. "And if a woman feels stressed out because the house is a mess and the guy's sitting on the couch while she's vacuuming, that's not going to put her in the mood."

The report's co-authors, sociologists Scott Coltrane of the University of California, Riverside and Oriel Sullivan of Ben Gurion University, said they were addressing a perception that women's gains in the workplace were not being matched by gains at home.

"The typical punch line of many news stories has been that even though women are working longer hours on the job and cutting back their own housework, men are not picking up the slack," Coltrane and Sullivan wrote.

They said this perception was based on unrealistic expectations and underestimated the degree of change "going on behind the scenes" since the 1960s. The change, they said, "is too great a break from the past to be dismissed as a slow and grudging evolution."

Among the findings they cited:

-In the U.S., time-use diary studies show that since the '60s, men's contribution to housework doubled from about 15 percent to more than 30 percent of the total. Over the same period, the average working mother reduced her weekly housework load by two hours.

-Between 1965 and 2003, men tripled the amount of time they spent on child care. During the same period, women also increased the time spent with their children, suggesting mutual interest in a more hands-on approach to child-raising.

Sullivan and Coltrane predict men's contributions will increase further as more women take jobs.

"Men share more family work if their female partners are employed more hours, earn more money and have spent more years in education," they said.

Pamela Smock, a University of Michigan sociologist who also works with the council, said a persistent gender gap remains for what she called "invisible" household work - scheduling children's medical appointments, buying the gifts they take to birthday parties, arranging holiday gatherings, for example.

Marriage equality is more elusive among blacks than whites, with black women shouldering a relatively higher burden in terms of child care and housework, said council collaborator Shirley Hill, a sociology professor at the University of Kansas.

The report's overall findings meshed with what Carol Evans, founder and CEO of Working Mother magazine, has been observing as she tracks America's two-income couples.

"There's a generational shift that's quite strong," she said. "The younger set of dads have their own expectations about themselves as to being helpful and participatory. They haven't quite gotten to equality in any sense that a women would say, 'Wow, that's equal,' but they've gotten so much farther down the road."

SOUR GRAPES - DON'T DISS JAMAICA!!!

My response to a grudging, covetous article circulating on the web not giving us fair credit for our efforts, trying to explain away our Olympic glory with genetics - OH REALLY?? We know that some will always try to find an easy, gratuitous way to explain away the achievements of developing countries. They do not wish to know that: * Jamaica has the most comprehensive athletics programme, beginning at primary/prep school - Usain Bolt ran at the National Stadium at age six. *We have the best local training - our athletes got faster after local coaches like Stephen Francis and Glen Mills created their own regimen so Jamaicans would no longer have to depend on overseas training * We have a tradition of strong leadership and a secure decades-old democratic system that creates confidence in our people - National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey had a membership of 10 million in the UNIA in the 1950s before he was deported on trumped-up charges * We have hybrid strength - hardly any Jamaican is "pure African". Usain Bolt's Dad is obviously mixed. All the races live harmoniously in Jamaica and have intermarried over the years. * In the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) and the Sports Medicine Association of Jamaica, we have the finest set of expert volunteers who have been elected to the highest posts in world bodies. Teddy McCook is now the IAAF Representative for the Western Hemisphere. Mike Fennell was the Chairman of the last Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.

TOKYO (Reuters) - A 79-year-old woman slashed two women with a fruit knife near a crowded Tokyo railway station because she wanted police help after running away from a shelter for homeless people, police said on Saturday.

The victims, in their 20s, were only slightly injured in the attack on Friday night in a crowded shopping and entertainment district of the city. The elderly woman was arrested from the scene, a spokesman at the Shibuya police station said.

"I ran away from a shelter earlier this week and I don't have money. I thought if I caused an incident, the police would take care of me," the spokesman quoted the woman as telling investigators. She was carrying around 6,500 yen (32 pounds).

The incident was the latest in a string of such attacks that have unnerved the relatively crime-free country.

In June, a man who said he was tired of life went on a stabbing rampage in the crowded Tokyo shopping street of Akihabara, killing seven people and wounding a dozen others.
