Ida Stewart swears that her horoscope has everything to do with why death has shied away from her up to now.

Ida Stewart talks about her life during an interview at her home in Alexandria, St Ann on Monday. Stewart said she was born on November 5, 1886, making her 122 years old. (Photo: Lionel Rookwood)

According to Stewart, the prediction she read when she was a youngster said she would live to an old age and die well off.

Today, the Scorpio has good reason to believe that horoscope, as last November, she said, she marked her 122nd birthday.

Stewart, who lives in the cool hills of Devon in Alexandria, St Ann might in fact be the world's oldest person, despite that recognition being given by the Guinness Book of World Records to Maria de Jesus, a Portuguese woman who died last week at age 115.

"My horoscope said I would live to an old age and die well off," Stewart told the Observer from the bedroom of her quaint wattle and daub house. "I found it in a dream book long time. The fifth of November gone I was 122."

While she rolled back the years, it was clear that father time had stamped her with his own signature, having all but stolen her eyesight, hearing, teeth, much of her strength and perhaps the will to continue living much longer.

"I am sick, man. My whole body in pain, so I'm only waiting for my call (death), but as mi roll nuh call yet, I must be satisfied. This world is not my home, I'm only here for a few days. When God is ready, I have to go. I'm not well; I only talk to you because di tongue nuh drop yet," she said to the slow ticking of a wall clock.

Stewart said her birth certificate was unwittingly destroyed by an overzealous relative who was house cleaning after the death of her mother, but insisted that her memory is perfect.

"My birth certificate, my last sister after my mother died cleared the house with it, but I don't forget anything; I was born November 5th, 1886," she said firmly, leaning forward as if to peer down the tunnel of years she has been through.

Stewart has outlived just about everyone she knew from then, including her 12 siblings, her husband Leonard, who died 20 years ago, and even her very own daughter who passed away in November at the grand old age of 86.

"I had one single daughter who was born in 1922," she said. "Her name was Edna, but we called her Dottie. She had nine children. She was buried on the 10th of November gone."

Regret laced her voice as she recalled that she was unable to attend the funeral in Friendship district.

Eyes practically closed, as if the lids were too heavy for her to support, and groaning every now and then from the pain in her limbs, Stewart said that based on the Bible, which she can no longer see to read, the world is at the end of its rope.

"I've seen everything already. "Everything that I've seen I find it in the Bible, it fulfilling. Nations against nations, disease and pestilence," she said almost sorrowfully, rubbing her hands across her sightless eyes which have all but lost their lashes.

She reflected on her early years, saying that they cannot be compared to modern times.

"Those days were nice, but these times, O God, bad mind and grudgeful people in the world now," said the woman who was born and raised in Longhill, St Ann.

She still wears her wedding and engagement rings and is quick to say why.

"After mi nuh want nobody again; mi married to God," she declared, chuckling while rubbing the emblems which her beloved farmer had given her.

Stewart reels off dates with accuracy a calendar would begrudge, and is very much mindful of how much things and times have changed. But even while she has modern conveniences, she still uses the kerosene lamp which graces her humble bedroom.

"The electricity is there, but I'm not used to it, so I don't bother with it," she said. "But look at it, kerosene oil was shilling a gallon, now it's $300 a gallon. This ya time a money time."

Probably Stewart's only vice is that she smokes tobacco, the virtues of which she extolled.

"Suppose I tell you why I smoke?" she asked, then explained that before she started she didn't approve of her husband smoking.

"My husband couldn't smoke let me see, but I had a tooth that used to hurt me, and a young man told me to smoke it [tobacco] to get rid of the pain, and from that day till now." she said, the sentence left hanging with the suggestion that the pain stopped.

While she marks time, Stewart is surrounded by several of the grand and great grandchildren who she helped raised in some way or other. Ironically, she is stronger than her stepdaughter, Agatha Stewart, her husband's outside child who is ailing in addition to being blind and partially deaf.

When the Observer asked Agatha how old she was, she replied: "Ask Miss Ida, mi nuh know."

Agatha's daughter, Esther Anglin, who was raised by Ida, said Stewart in her twilight years is "miserable" but she owes her a debt of gratitude.

"My mother had me, but Miss Ida raised me from I was a child," said the 50-year-old Anglin.

She described Ida as someone who loves to give jokes, is "strong and a good cook". She said efforts are being made to obtain another copy of Stewart's birth certificate from the Registrar General's Department, an apparent effort to prove her age.

"From I know Miss Ida, she a big (old) woman," said a resident of the community who gave her name only as Nancy.

Forty-four-year-old Paula Lynch, who grew up meters away from Stewart, remembers her as a jovial woman with a kind spirit.

"Ever since I was born I have known her as an old lady with a walking stick," she recalled. "She is a kind woman with an impeccable memory up to this day. She also liked to read her Bible."

Lynch also confirmed that Stewart has been smoking tobacco for more than 90 years and that she would engage in the habit with her husband.

"They were a loving couple who loved to smoke tobacco together," she said.

"When she was 80 she broke her leg and nobody thought she would be able to walk again because of her age, but she defied all odds," said Lynch.

Josh Brolin and Jeffrey Wright have just settled their criminal case in Shreveport, LA.

0106_brolin_mugs_bn.jpg

Brolin and Wright were charged with interfering with a cop during a bar brawl last July. Both actors were pepper sprayed and Wright was tasered.

Under the terms of the deal, as long as they don't have run-ins with the law from now till March 11, all charges will be dropped.

Score another victory for attorney Blair Berk.

UPDATE: TMZ contacted Wright for comment , who told us: "These arrests should never have happened. Thankfully the prosecution was able to see that and dismiss all charges. Unfortunately, there are no winners here, but I remain hopeful that Shreveport officials will be encouraged to dig at the root causes of certain police incidents down there. An old-fashioned refusal of service led to our arrest that night, and there's no room for that in America in 2009."

0106_victoria_prince_ex.jpgKevin Federline's new chick isn't low rent -- she's no rent -- if you believe the landlord suing her for skipping out on her payments!

Sources tell TMZ Victoria Prince was booted from her Beverly Hills home back in September after she allegedly didn't pay rent for six months. We're told she struck a deal with her landlord to pay him back in installments, but she never made any of the payments.

Now, the landlord is suing Prince for $7500, but there's a catch -- nobody knows where to find her!

We're told her landlord tried to serve her where she works, but security wouldn't let the process server in. Try Vegas next?

Calls to Prince were not returned.

THE OFFICE of the Public Defender will today begin an independent investigation into the circumstances that led to the Portland tragedy to determine the extent of state liability, if any.

Fourteen people, including a 10-year-old boy, were killed when a market truck plunged over a precipice in Dam Bridge in the Rio Grande Valley on December 19.

At the same time, the driver of the ill-fated truck, 31-year-old mechanic, Charles Devon Clarke, was yesterday offered bail in the sum of $1 million by Resident Magistrate Marjorie Moisten.

A team of investigators from the Office of the Public Defender will be at Dam Bridge in the Rio Grande Valley today to examine the exact location where the market truck went over the precipice in the country's worst accident in the last 30 years.

Public Defender Earl Witter said investigators from his office would be examining particular allegations in relation to the cause of the accident.

"The team will focus attention on allegations that failure to extend an abutment to a bridge or a gabion basket in proximity is the direct cause of slippage of the road surface, thereby causing the ill-fated passenger and goods-laden truck to plunge into a ravine," said Witter in a release yesterday.

Survivors' fund

He commended the Government for establishing a fund for the survivors and dependents of the victims and urged Jamaicans to support it.

However, Witter said government assistance and contributions to the fund would not necessarily bring closure to the tragedy.

Meanwhile, Clarke is to return to court in Buff Bay on January 14.

Attorney-at-law Carl McDonald, who is representing Clarke, yesterday challenged the charges against his client.

Clarke was charged with 14 counts of manslaughter, reckless driving and failing to report an accident to the police.

McDonald insisted that his client was innocent of the charges.

"My client was embraced by one of the witnesses during an identification parade on Monday, January 5," he said.

Continuing, the attorney said, "At least two of the four witnesses were offering comforting words, and have stated in no uncertain manner that he did not cause the accident."

He told The Gleaner that his client was not negligent, adding that Clarke was extending courtesy to another motorist by swerving to avoid a collision.

The leadership of the police force has scoffed at claims that the hurried transfer of the acting crime chief from St Thomas to St Catherine was based on the instruction of a government member of parliament (MP).

"I have never and will never take instructions from any politician," declared head of the Area Five Police, Assistant Commissioner Leon Rose, yesterday.

Rose was responding to claims that the transfer of St Thomas acting crime chief, Inspector Carlos Bell, was linked to an ongoing controversy involving police personnel in the parish and West St Thomas MP, James Robertson.

The inspector was informed of the transfer on Monday, two days after police in the parish announced they would serve summonses on Robertson for allegedly committing misdemeanours during an altercation with members of a police party in Norris, St Thomas, last Saturday.

The decision by the Police High Command to transfer Bell came four months after he was congratulated by the hierarchy for the quality of his performance in the parish and was assured that he would not be transferred.

No outside influence

While not providing details on the reason for Bell's transfer, Rose was adamant that there was no outside influence.

"The fact is that Bell's transfer is temporary and not based on any directive from any politician," the veteran officer said.

Robertson was equally dismissive of the claims as he denied knowledge of the transfer of the inspector who has served St Thomas for several years.

"That claim of political interference in the transfer of a member of the force is an insult to the maturity of our nation," Robertson told The Gleaner.

"I have not played any role in the transfer of Inspector Bell," Robertson added.

The MP could soon face charges for the alleged use of abusive language to the police and obstructing the police.

He is alleged to have committed the misdemeanours during an incident in which he drove Rameish Simpson to hospital.

Simpson, who the police claim was wanted for questioning in connection with several crimes, was nursing a gunshot wound following an alleged shoot-out with the police.

While admitting that he drove the man to hospital, Robertson has claimed that this was done with the full knowledge of the Police High Command and that he was escorted by members of the police force.

Difference of opinion

Robertson has also denied the allegations that he was abusive to the police during a confrontation.

"I know Inspector Bell and we have had a difference of opinion, but never a clash, and I have not seen him for some time," Robertson said yesterday.

But police sources in St Thomas claim that there has been tension between some of Robertson's constituents and Bell since an incident in 2006.

It is alleged that the inspector seized some high-powered motorcycles in the parish, one of which, investigations later revealed, was owned by a political activist who was murdered in St Catherine, the same division in which Bell has been transferred.

The Gleaner further understands that at the time the motorcycles were seized, Bell was approached by influential persons in the constituency who wanted him to release the bikes, but he refused.

Efforts to get a comment from Bell yesterday were unsuccessful.

The Opposition People's National Party has expressed concern about the timing of the transfer of the inspector who has was the acting crime chief for the parish.

Plea bargain law delayed

January 7, 2009
Started By Garrick0 Comments

FOUR YEARS after the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament approved far-reaching legislation, which was crafted to target organised crimes, the proposed law is yet to be enacted.

The Criminal Justice (Plea Negotiations and Agreements) Act, 2005, better known as the plea-bargaining law, which was passed almost four years ago, has not been gazetted.

Checks by The Gleaner yesterday revealed that the legislation, which was intended to give statutory recognition to plea negotiations and agree-ments, has not been imple-mented by Government.

Statutory authority

If enacted, the legislation would give the director of public prosecutions statutory authority to engage in discussions and make bargains with an accused. It also allows the accused to know beforehand that his/her sentence will be reduced.

The legislation, when debated in Parliament in 2005, received unanimous support from the then ruling People's National Party and the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party.

The Criminal Justice (Plea Negotiations and Agreements) Bill emerged in 2000 out of a recommendation from the Washington-based Police Executive Research Forum.

It could not be ascertained from the Ministry of Justice yesterday why the legislation has not been introduced.

Questions raised

Late last year, questions were raised about the existence of plea-bargain law when Ricardo 'Bully' Thomas was fined $1 million and given a suspended sentence on charges of illegal possession of two firearms and 49 rounds of ammunition.

He was given the sentence in the Gun Court after a senior cop testified that Bully had helped the police in solving crimes and recovering illegal firearms.

At the same time, the police were raising concern that Bully's return to his c**kburn Pen community, St Andrew, could result in more violence there.

According to the police, conflicts between rival gangs in c**kburn Pen had resulted in the murders of about 60 people in the last 18 months.

Bully's case was called up seven times after he pleaded guilty before he was finally sentenced on December 10.

This may be the very best police report of 2008. When Charles Barkley was busted in Arizona early this morning for DUI, he told cops he ran a stop sign because he was in a hurry to get some oral sex.

According to the officer who wrote the report, "He told me that he ran the stop sign because he was in a hurry to pick up the girl I saw get in the passenger seat."

The officer continues: "He asked me to admit that she was 'hot.' He asked me, 'You want the truth?' When I told him I did he said, 'I was gonna drive around the corner and get a b**w job. He then explained that she had given him a 'b**w job' one week earlier and said it was the best one he had ever had in his life."

The report says when Barkley was taken to the station, he told one of the employees, "I'll tattoo my name on your ass" if he helped "get him out of the DUI." According to the report, "He laughed and then quickly corrected himself and said, 'I'll tattoo your name on my ass' and then laughed again."

The report also says officers "found a handgun in the vehicle" which was immediately impounded. The report doesn't say if the handgun was legal or not, and the only thing that we know for sure was taht it was loaded...

The Director of public prosecutions (DPP) is set to withdraw all charges against businessman Rodney Chin when he returns to court on Monday for the scheduled start of the Cuban light-bulb trial.

Chin will instead testify for the State against his co-accused Kern Spencer and Colleen Wright.

Government sources yesterday confirmed that Chin provided investigators with a statement last November and agreed to testify against Spencer and Wright. In return, the Office of the DPP decided to drop the charges against him.

Chin, who is the managing director of Universal Management Company and Caribbean Commu-nications and Media Network Ltd, is charged with one count of money laundering, two counts of breaching the Corruption Preven-tion Act and two counts of conspiracy to defraud.

He is now on bail in the sum of $10 million.

Yesterday, Richard Small, the attorney representing Chin, con-firmed the reports reaching The Gleaner but directed the news team to DPP Paula Llewellyn for more information.

Yesterday, Llewellyn was terse when contacted by The Gleaner.

"I have no comment to make on the issue at this time, except to say that the Crown is ready to start the case on Monday," she said.

In the meantime, Patrick Atkinson, one of the lawyers representing Spencer, refused to comment on the report.

"I can't comment until it is officially placed before the court on Monday. After that, I will speak to the issue," Atkinson told The Gleaner.

However, the sources claimed that Atkinson and the other attorneys representing Spencer were presented with Chin's statement and informed that he would testify against their client from late last year.

Spencer, Chin and Wright were charged last February by detectives from the Organised Crime Investigation Division, as investigations into the Cuban light-bulb scandal intensified.

Spencer, the member of parliament for North East St Elizabeth, is accused of acting improperly when, as state minister in the energy ministry, under the People's National Party Govern-ment, he exercised control over the distribution of free energy-saving light bulbs given to Jamaica by the government of Cuba.

The project had cost $276 million to be implemented but the contractor general and the police later found a number of suspected irregularities in the awarding of contracts.

Spencer, who has kept his seat in the house, is on $10 million bail while Wright, his former personal assistant, is on $5 million.

At least two women who have had abortions say they would rather terminate a pregnancy than give the child up for adoption.

The women were responding to a call recently made by several members of the church community and other anti-abortion advocates for expectant mothers contemplating abortion to take the babies to them instead.

Father Gregory Ramkissoon, executive director of Mustard Seed, threw out the lifeline during a press conference recently, saying his organisation and other churches would be willing to care for children whose mothers believed they could not keep them.

However, the two young professionals who spoke with The Gleaner said they would feel guiltier if they were to carry the baby to term and then give it up for adoption, than they would if they terminated the pregnancy.

"I would feel like I neglected my child," said 22-year-old Cecile Lyn.

Lyn explained that the idea of carrying a child to full term and then turning it over to an adoption agency or the church would be more traumatic than having an abortion.

"I don't really see the sense in that," she said. "Why bond with a child for nine months and then give it away?"

She said her decision to have an abortion three years ago was based on the fact that she had just started university and had no money or support.

Lyn explained that after she told the father of the child that she was pregnant, he broke off the relationship, leaving her to deal with the situation on her own.

"I don't regret having an abortion. It was the best thing for me to do at that time because I wasn't ready to be a mother," she said.

Twenty-six-year-old Karice Sinclairshared Lyn's sentiments. "I couldn't sleep at night knowing that my child was alive in one of those homes and is probably suffering and just leave it like that," she said. Sinclair said she believed that this was a worse fate than abortion.

Sinclair admitted that her decision to have an abortion at 21 years old was a matter of convenience. "I was just starting out, just finished school and I made the silly mistake of getting pregnant," she told The Gleaner.

Reverend Donovan Cole, a member of the Coalition for the Defense of Life, said it was unfortunate that some persons saw it necessary to put convenience over life. "It shows a real deterioration in values," he said.

Cole said the Church would be willing to care for the child until the mother was in a position to do so herself.

Debate on abortion intensified in September 2008, when a joint select committee of Parliament began hearing submissions from the public on the controversial issue.

The committee has been set up to consider the recommendations of the Abortion Policy Review Group.

SUMMONSES PREPARED FOR KARTEL, MAVADO

STARCover_1_P62G6MAVADOSM.jpgSTARCover_1_P2XKMKARTELSM.jpg

The St Catherine South police have prepared summonses for deejays Adidjah 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer and David 'Mavado' Brooks.

The summonses, which are expected to be served on the deejays sometime this week, will charged them with breaches of the Town and Communities Act following their performances at Sting 2008 recently.

The division's crime chief detective, acting Deputy Superintendent Carl Malcom, confirmed that the summonses have been prepared for the entertainers. "They will be served as early as possible," Malcolm told THE STAR. The Town and Communities Act prohibits people from using profanity and threatening words, a number of which were used during the entertainers' performances.

The artistes were involved in a highly publicised lyrical clash at Sting. The event attracted a large crowd and was for most part incident-free. There were a large number of police and security personnel present as well.

A school in the Jabaliya refugee camp took a direct hit

At least 30 people were killed and 55 injured when Israeli artillery shells landed outside a United Nations-run school in Gaza, UN officials have said.

A number of children were among those who died when the al-Fakhura school in the Jabaliya refugee camp was hit, doctors at nearby hospitals said.

Israel said its soldiers had come under fire from militants inside the school.

Earlier, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned of a "full-blown humanitarian crisis" in Gaza.

Speaking on the 11th day of the Israeli assault, a senior ICRC official, Pierre Kraehenbuhl, said life in Gaza had become intolerable.

GAZA CRISIS BACKGROUND
Smoke rises from Gaza City (6 January 2009)

Palestinian medical sources say up to 600 people have been killed since the attacks began, and Mr Kraehenbuhl said much more needed to be done to protect civilians.

Some 70 Palestinians and five Israeli soldiers were killed on Tuesday.

One soldier was killed in an exchange of fire with militants in Gaza City, while four others were killed by shellfire from their own tanks earlier in the day, Israeli military officials said.

Israel says its offensive is stopping militants firing rockets, but at least five hit southern Israel on Tuesday, with one reaching the town of Gedera, about 40km (25 miles) from Gaza, and injuring a baby.

Three Israeli civilians and one soldier have been killed by rocket fire from the Gaza Strip since the offensive began 10 days ago.

'Mortar fire'

The UN aid agency in Gaza, Unrwa, said three artillery shells had landed close to the al-Fakhura school on Tuesday afternoon, spraying shrapnel on people both inside and outside the building.

About 350 people had sought refuge at the school in effort to escape the fighting between Israeli soldiers and militants on the outskirts of the refugee camp, to the east of Gaza City.

Television footage showed bodies scattered on the ground amid pools of *lo**.

Palestinian doctors at nearby hospitals had earlier said that at least 40 people had been killed. The Kamal Adwan hospital in Beit Lahiya said 30 people had died there. A further 10 people died at the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, doctors said.

The UN officials said they regularly provided the Israeli military with exact co-ordinates of their facilities, and that the school was in a built-up area.

An Israeli military spokesman said that, according to initial checks, its soldiers had come under mortar fire from militants inside the school.

"In response, the forces fired a number of mortar rounds into the area," he told the Reuters news agency.

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said militants regularly hid among civilians inside such facilities or used them to launch attacks.

"According to our values and the instructions that we have in the army, the targets are Hamas targets. We try to avoid any kind of civilian casualties," she told reporters.

This was the second Israeli strike on a UN-run school in a day. Earlier, at least three Palestinians were killed when a school was hit in the Shati camp, UN officials said.

After the first attack, the director of operations for Unrwa, John Ging, said the conditions in Gaza were "horrific".

The BBC's Rushdi Abu Alouf reports from a UN school inside a Gaza refugee camp

"Nowhere is safe for civilians here in Gaza at the moment. They are fleeing their homes and they are right to do it when you look at the casualty numbers."

"It's very, very dangerous, and even the 14,000 who have sought refuge in our schools and shelters, they are not safe either."

Mr Ging said international leaders had a responsibility to act to protect civilians.

"You cannot conduct huge military operations in such densely-populated places without killing hundreds and injuring thousands of civilians," he added.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have pushed further south on the Gaza Strip and clashed with militants near Gaza City.

Skirmishes were also reported on the edges of the Deir al-Balah and Bureij refugee camps in central Gaza, and witnesses said Israeli tanks and infantry were advancing on Khan Younis.

Information about what is happening inside Gaza is limited as Israel has barred foreign reporters from entering.

'Time against us'

Diplomatic efforts to try to end the violence are gathering pace.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he had asked his Syrian counterpart, Bashar Assad, to help convince Hamas to co-operate with efforts to end the Israeli offensive. Syria is regarded as a main backer of Hamas.

WASHINGTON Nine Muslim passengers were kicked off a flight from Washington, D.C., to Florida after other passengers reported hearing a suspicious remark about airplane security.

AirTran Airways spokesman Tad Hutcheson called the incident on the New Year's Day flight from Reagan National Airport to Orlando, Fla., a misunderstanding, but defended the company's response. He said the airline followed federal rules and did nothing wrong.

One of the Muslim passengers, Kashif Irfan, told The Washington Post the confusion began when his brother was talking about the safest place to sit on an airplane.

"My brother and his wife were discussing some aspect of airport security," Irfan said. "The only thing my brother said was, 'Wow, the jets are right next to my window.'"

Irfan told the newspaper he thought he and the others were profiled because of their appearance. The men had beards and the women wore headscarves, traditional Muslim attire.

Irfan, 34, is an anesthesiologist and his brother is a lawyer. Both live in Alexandria, Va., with their families, and were born in Detroit. They were traveling with their wives, Irfan's sister-in-law and Irfan's three sons, ages 7, 4 and 2. A family friend also was traveling with the group to a religious retreat in Florida.

Federal officials ordered the rest of the passengers from the plane and re-screened them before allowing the flight to depart about two hours behind schedule.

The family was upset that AirTran didn't allow the Muslim passengers to book another flight. The airline said in a news release Friday that one of the passengers became irate, made inappropriate comments and had to be escorted away from a gate podium by local law enforcement.

"The FBI agents actually cleared our names," Inayet Sahin, one of the family members kicked off the flight, told CNN. "They went on our behalf and spoke to the airlines and said, 'There is no suspicious activity here. They are clear. Please let them get on a flight so they can go on their vacation,' and they still refused."

The family and friend eventually made it to their destination on a US Airways flight.

Hutcheson said AirTran initially refused to rebook the family because the airline had not been notified the investigation was complete. He said the passengers were offered full refunds and are now welcome to fly on AirTran after being cleared by authorities.

"At the end of the day, people got on and made comments they shouldn't have made on the airplane, and other people heard them," Hutcheson said. "Other people heard them, misconstrued them. It just so happened these people were of Muslim faith and appearance. It escalated, it got out of hand and everyone took precautions."

Christopher White, a federal Transportation Security Administration spokesman, said the situation was handled appropriately.

White said the pilot, after being informed of the remarks, requested that two federal air marshals on board remove the individuals. TSA then alerted authorities, including the FBI, which conducted an investigation. Once authorities determined there was no threat, it was up to the airline whether to allow the family to reboard.

"If the pilot is uncomfortable with someone flying on their plane, that's their decision," White said.

A spokesman for the FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

One of the passengers removed, Abdur Razack Aziz, said he will consider a lawsuit.

(January 3, 2009) - A mixed-race couple in England has defied the odds by again becoming parents of twins who have different skin colors.

According to Britain's Daily Mail, in 2001 Dean Durrant, who is Black, and Alison Spooner who is White, had twin daughters. And, just like their parents, one appeared Black and the other White.

The couple repeated their history-making feat a few days ago when Spooner, 27 gave birth by Cesarean section to another set of twin girls who also took on the individual appearance of their parents.

Now the couple has four daughters -- two who have the same pigmentation of their father and two who have the same skin coloring as their mother.

"There's no easy way to explain it all," Durrant, 33, was reported as saying. "I'm still in shock myself."

Both sets of twins are fraternal -- meaning they are the product of two separately fertilized eggs-- therefore it isn't unusual that they don't resemble.

However, medical researchers say it's rare for a couple to have two sets of twins and even rarer for them to have such different appearances.

"Even non-identical twins aren't that common," said Dr. Sarah Jarvis of Britain's Royal College of General Practitioners in an Associated Press interview. "Non-identical twins from mixed parents, of different races, less common still. To have two eggs fertilized and come out different colors, less common still. But I never thought for one second they would turn out the same as last time."

Medical studies indicate that the chance of giving birth to a second set of twins with different skin colors is 1 in 500,000. They also suggest that although the phenomenon remains uncommon, it's likely to become common considering the growing increase in mixed race couples.

THE ORGY of violence which resulted in more than 1,600 people being murdered across the island last year has continued in 2009 with 13 persons killed in the first 48 hours.

The victims include 20-year-old Kimani Manderson, the first person killed in Jamaica this year.

He was fatally shot during a gun salute in Salt Spring St James minutes into the new year.

The killings have spoiled efforts by the National Transformation Pro-gramme (NTP) and the Peace Management Initiative (PMI) to have a crime free January.

The two groups secured the commitment from several gang leaders and area dons to put a lid on the violence but they have been powerless to prevent incidents like one in Mile End, St Ann, where 50-year-old Earl Hoilet was stabbed to death, allegedly by his 31-year-old son during a dispute at a bar.

Official murder figures for last year have not yet been released, but in his New Year's message, Prime Minister Bruce Golding claimed that the country ended the year with the murder figure three per cent above 2007 when 1,574 persons were killed.

This would put the murder total around 1,620, a shade below 2005 when a record 1,674 people were killed. According to the prime minister, while the crime rate was still too high the Ministry of National Security achieved some success in 2008.

"Up to the end of May, the murder rate was running at 18 per cent higher than last year. The measures which were instituted around the middle of the year have begun to work," Golding claimed.

"We are going to have to intensify even further the efforts we are making to turn back the tide of criminal activity plaguing the land. We are providing additional vehicles, equipment and other resources to the police," he said.

"We are stepping up recruitment, we are increasing our training capacity, we are improving our intelligence capabilities, we are intensifying police operations, and we are improving the court system. We must keep up the pressure for 2009," Golding added as he sought to provide a ray of hope to the nation.

'Fresh Start' campaign

Golding was supported by the Reverend Al Miller who heads the NTP, which operates out of the Office of the Prime Minister.

Miller has taken his 'Fresh Start Jamaica' campaign to tough inner-city communities including Nannyville, Woodford Park, Allman Town, Southside, Tel Aviv, Gold Street, Jungle 12, Goldsmith Villa and African Gardens in August Town.

His team has also visited Back Bush, off Mountain View Avenue, the nearby Burgher Gully, Whitfield Town, Trench Town and Jones Town where community leaders signalled their intention to bring an end to crime and violence.

Yesterday, Miller argued that 13 murders in the first two days of 2009 underscored the need for the NTP to increase its efforts to achieve a 'Fresh Start For Jamaica'.

"This shows that we need to do more and target more communities because we cannot continue killing 1,600 persons every year," Miller told The Sunday Gleaner.

He noted that of the 13 murders so far reported for 2009, none was committed in the communities already visited by the NTP or the PMI.

"What we need to do now is go to the other communities so far we have concentrated on the corporate area and sections of St Catherine but this week we should be in Clarendon and then head to St James," he said.

Clarendon, St James and St Catherine were particularly challenging for the security forces last year and already seven persons have been killed in those parishes.

"What has happened is that the PMI has concentrated its efforts in the corporate area and there has been no similar programme in St James or Clarendon were the young men are engaged in discussions," said Miller.

"We will need additional resources to target these parishes and this has to be followed by a major programme to create jobs and opportunities for these young men. Poor education and lack of opportunities leave them with no hope and this is the fuel for the violence fire," he added.

The police high command is expected to roll out its latest anti-crime plan this week.

Teen rapper Soulja Boy may have been robbed at gunpoint earlier this week at his home in Atlanta. However, reports are still unconfirmed.

Via text messages on the rapper's official Twitter page, he left an ATL night club "zooted" at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday (December 29). Then hours later, the next day, two more texts popped up, stating robbers kicked in his door, and almost took his life.

"Thanking God for my life," Soulja Boy's Twitter message read. "Six n****z kicked in my door and tried to kill me."

"Glad we alive, they had AKs and pistols and tried to kidnap my boy Jbar," another message read later that afternoon.

Later Tuesday evening (December 30), the messages mysteriously disappeared, and the teen rapper hasn't addressed the alleged attack as of press time.

Ever since the shocking messages, the rumor has popped up on several gossip sites. Then on New Year's Eve, two masked men posted a viral video (via Bossip), claiming responsibility for the crime. However, the men claimed that they were the only two robbers and not six, as Soulja Boy originally said. They also said that only one pistol was used, and not AK-47s.

In the video, the two men boast of monitoring the young rapper's movements, attending his album release party, and then following him by to his home.

While the video was first met with skepticism by online fans, a rep for Soulja Boy confirmed to AllHipHop that an incident did take place. However, no further information was released, other than stating that the crime is "a serious situation."

Poll results are in.... VOTERS CHOOSE KARTEL IN STING CLASH

STARCover_1_PM5VHKARTELSM.jpg

The results are in and according to the public, Kartel was the 'last man standing' at Sting '08, held at Jamworld, Portmore, St Catherine.

Last Friday THE STAR asked the public to vote for the winner of the clash held on December 26 by texting the name of who they believed won to the number provided.

Kartel won the vote-off after he got more than 65 per cent of the votes from the respondents.

When THE STAR called Kartel yesterday for a response to his victory in the poll, he quickly pointed out that he was not surprised.

"No I'm not. I knew the outcome from the 'Barber' (Mavado) broke (Usain) Bolt's record," he said.

There was some controversy following the clash with fans of both artistes claiming victory. Mavado also told THE STAR that he was the winner and the 'baddest' deejay in Jamaica while Kartel insisted that he (Mavado) ran out of lyrics and ran from the stage so could not have been the winner.

In an article published in THE STAR on December 29, persons in entertainment circles were also split on who won. A statement from Supreme Promotions (promoters of Sting), said the clash was even. "The clash was too close to call. It was evenly poised," Isaiah Laing, head of Supreme Promotions said.

In yesterday's interview Kartel said the answer was clear immediately after the clash.

Reports however were that the clash had appeared to be in Kartel's favour until he deejayed about Mavado's mother, which did not go down well with the Sting crowd. Some persons began to boo him and Mavado capitalised on this and did a swift counteraction before leaving the stage.

Efforts by THE STAR to reach Mavado for a comment yesterday proved futile.

SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. A 12-year-old boy who fatally shot his mother after an argument over his chores was found guilty of premeditated murder.

Judge James Conlogue found the boy guilty after a hearing Friday in Cochise County Superior Court in the southern Arizona town of Bisbee. The boy is not being identified because he was charged as a juvenile.

Conlogue ruled that prosecutors had proved the boy acted intentionally and with premeditation when he shot Sara Madrid, 34, eight times on Aug. 1. The shooting happened after the boy had argued with his mother over his chores.

Madrid had left the family home after the argument, and the boy got a .22-caliber pistol from her bedroom closet, waited for her to return and then repeatedly shot her, according to court testimony.

Madrid's live-in boyfriend of 10 years, Alfonso Munoz, witnessed the shooting and said the boy gave him the empty gun afterward.

Munoz, who helped raise the boy, said he had taught the child how to use the weapon for emergencies and self-defense.

The boy's lawyer, Sanford Edleman, had argued that the boy did not intend to kill his mother but only wanted to get back at her for abusing him.

Police said the boy told them his mother yelled at him and slapped him.

Madrid's sister, Ernestine Huitron, testified Friday that Madrid did not want the boy to live with her, and that Madrid had a temper and yelled at him.

"He is a docile, sweet boy," Huitron said. "Sara said (the boy) was stupid and dumb."

Prosecutors wanted the boy tried as an adult, but the judge ruled the case should remain in juvenile court after a psychologist and psychiatrist testified that he suffered physical and verbal abuse from his mother and could be rehabilitated in the juvenile justice system.

Under Arizona law, the boy can only be held until he turns 18. Sentencing is set for Jan. 23.

If you think people laugh at your skiing skills then think again. A man was a put into a precarious and undoubtedly embarra**ing position while skiing with his child at Vail mountain last Friday.

According to reports:

the chairlift's fold-down seat was not in the correct lowered-down position - causing the man to partially fall through the resulting gap as he attempted to board the lift.

He was prevented from plummeting to the ground below by his right ski, which became jammed in the ascending lift.

Johnny chopped to death

December 24, 2008
Started By STUWY7729 Comments

A man who is said to be a nuisance in St Catherine was yesterday chopped to death by residents after he was allegedly caught breaking into the house of a senior citizen.

The man, known to the Old Harbour police as 'Johnny', was recently released from prison. He was chopped to death about 7a.m. yesterday by disgruntled residents of Rhoden Pen near Old Harbour.

The police told The Star that they have been getting complaints that Johnny has been involving himself in several criminal acts including burglary, assault and sexual offences. Several residents attested to what was reported to The Star and declared that they will have a better Christmas because Johnny only chooses to break into the houses of elderly folks and young girls whom he often times rape.

In the meanwhile they told The Star that their only regret is that his accomplices are still on the loose.

Detectives from the St Catherine South Homicide Unit are conducting investigations to ascertain the circumstances surrounding Johnny's death.

FREEPORT, Bahamas The Bahamas will use two pathologists to ensure a careful autopsy on John Travolta's son, who died at the actor's vacation home in Grand Bahama, the territory's health minister said Saturday.

Dr. Hubert Minnis told The Associated Press that he decided to use a second specialist to guarantee a thorough assessment of what might have caused Jett Travolta's death.

The 16-year-old was found collapsed in a bathroom on Friday after having a seizure and hitting his head on the bathtub, said a police officer who declined to be named because she was not authorized to speak on the matter.

He was taken by ambulance to a Freeport hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police Superintendent Basil Rahming said in a statement.

A U.S.-certified clinical and forensic pathologist from Nassau will fly into Grand Bahama on Monday to help perform the autopsy, Minnis said. A possible cause of death likely will be known by the end of the day, he said.

The Bahamas is a haven for celebrities and Minnis himself was an obstetrician for Anna Nicole Smith, the former Playboy playmate who died from an accidental drug overdose and is buried in the Bahamas alongside her son.

John Travolta is trying to finish funeral arrangements and hopes to fly his son's body to Florida by midweek, said Michael McDermott, the actor's corporate and commercial attorney.

Travolta, 54, and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, 46, have a house in Ocala, Florida.

"It's heart-wrenching," McDermott said. "If you knew how much he loved that boy ... It was almost palpable. It was that strong."

Security was tight Saturday at the lavish Old Bahama Bay resort community, where Travolta owns a home.

"We are taking great steps to protect Travolta's privacy," resort spokesman Ryan Julison said. "Security is heightened because media is attempting to access the property."

The family arrived on a private plane Tuesday and apparently had invited 60 friends for the New Year's holiday weekend, including McDermott. It is unclear whether Travolta, a pilot, had flown his family in.

Jett was the couple's oldest child. They also have an 8-year-old daughter, Ella Bleu.

Preston and Travolta have said that Jett became very sick when he was 2 years old and was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease, an illness that leads to inflamed *lo** vessels in young children. Preston blamed household cleaners and fertilizers, and said that a detoxification program based on teachings from the Church of Scientology helped improve his health, according to People magazine.

"I was obsessive about his space being cleaned. We constantly had the carpets cleaned," Travolta said in a 2001 interview with CNN's Larry King, a portion of which was rebroadcast on the "Larry King Live" show Friday night. During that interview, Travolta spoke of how his son nearly died when he was 2.

It is unclear whether Jett was taking any medications for his seizures.

Travolta gained fame as Vinnie Barbarino on the 1970s television show "Welcome Back, Kotter" and the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever" and went on to become one of Hollywood's biggest names. He married Preston in 1991.

Preston appeared with Travolta in the 2000 film "Battlefield Earth," based on a novel by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. She also has featured in numerous television series and in films such as "Jerry Maguire," "What a Girl Wants," "For Love of the Game," "Eulogy" and, as the voice of the mother, in "Cat in the Hat."

McDermott said that following the death, "Kelly's kind of withdrawn to herself. She's dealing with it in her own way."

Jeremy Thayer, developer of the Ocala subdivision where Travolta owns a home, told the Ocala Star-Banner that Jett was a friendly teen who loved the outdoors and was often seen riding his bike or a golf cart.

MIGHTY DUCKS TAKING OVA 2009
NEW ORLEANS A man who initially told police gunmen kidnapped his 2 1/2-year-old son was arrested Saturday, accused of committing an "extremely hideous" murder because he was ordered to pay child support, Police Superintendent Warren Riley said.

Danny Platt confessed, told police where to find the child's body and will be booked on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Ja' Shawn Powell, Riley said at a news conference.

"He had said he would kill either his wife or his child before he paid child support," which he recently had been ordered to do, Riley said.

Riley said he did not know the amount of child support and would not describe how the boy was killed, saying the coroner would do that after the autopsy was complete. The coroner's spokesman did not immediately return a call.

"The mother is in a safe place," Riley said.

Although he had visiting rights, Platt, 22, of New Orleans, had never visited the boy until he picked him up Friday, Riley said.

Police put out a notice Saturday asking people to look for the boy and saying his father had told them three men with dreadlocks and AK-47 rifles had piled out of an SUV and kidnapped Ja' Shawn shortly before midnight Friday.

"His story never really added up," Riley said. "He was a suspect from the very beginning."

Riley said Platt eventually confessed and told officers where to find the body.

Police spokesman officer Janssen Valencia said he did not know if Platt has an attorney.

Platt had only a couple of "very minor" previous arrests, Riley said.

"How does an individual because he's ordered to pay child support to take care of a kid ... believe that this is so much pressure that he would face he would do this hideous act to his own child, or to any child, and think that is a remedy to paying child support?" Riley said. "I mean there are some sick individuals in this society, and this gentleman is clearly one."

SAN FRANCISCO Officials want a survivor of a tiger attack at the San Francisco Zoo to reimburse the city more than $75,000 for his medical treatment and are asking that the money come out of any cash settlement the victim may receive.

The city cited regulations that let liens for city-funded medical care be placed against damages recovered in wrongful injury or death cases.

The tax department said in a lien filed this week in federal court that Kulbir Dhaliwal has yet to pay for medical treatment provided by the city after the mauling on Christmas Day 2007.

Dhaliwal, who was 23 at the time of the attacks, suffered deep cuts and bites and underwent surgery to repair damage to his knees, according to a claim he and his brother filed last spring. The lien does not specify what medical care Dhaliwal received from the city.

The filing comes less than two months after Dhaliwal and his younger brother, Paul Dhaliwal, sued the San Francisco Police Department, the zoo and a public relations firm hired by the zoo in the days after the attack.

The lawsuit accuses the zoo of negligence because the tiger enclosure was lower than recommended national standards. The suit, which seeks unspecified damages, also claims the zoo started a smear campaign against the brothers following the attack.

Police investigated the maulings for more than a month while considering whether to charge the brothers. The lead investigator said in January 2008 that the victims may have taunted the animal, and the department did not recommend charges.

The city has not said why it has not sought reimbursement from Paul Dhaliwal.

The 243-pound tiger Siberian tiger, named Tatiana, escaped from its enclosure, seriously injuring the brothers and killing their friend, 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr. of San Jose, before police shot and killed the animal.

Matt Dorsey, a spokesman for San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera, declined to comment Friday on the city's filing. Mark Geragos, an attorney for the Dhaliwals, said Friday that the city's request had been expected and that he would not comment on whether a settlement was being discussed.

Sousa's parents filed a wrongful death suit last month in San Francisco Superior Court alleging that zoo officials ignored employee warnings that the wall was not tall enough. The parents' attorney said the family hopes a settlement can be reached with the city.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip Israeli ground troops and tanks cut swaths through the Gaza Strip early Sunday, cutting the coastal territory into two and surrounding its biggest city as the new phase of a devastating offensive against Hamas militants gained momentum.

The military used overwhelming firepower from tanks, artillery and aircraft to protect the advancing soldiers, and Gaza officials said at least 31 civilians were killed in the onslaught. The military said troops killed several dozen militants, but Gaza officials could confirm only four dead in part because rescue teams could not reach the battle zones. One Israeli soldier was killed in the offensive, which so far has been widely popular with the Israeli public.

The ground invasion and live images of the fighting in Gaza drew international condemnations and dominated news coverage on Arab satellite TV stations, many of which aired footage of wounded Palestinians at hospitals. Hamas threatened to turn Gaza into an Israeli "graveyard."

Thousands of soldiers in three brigade-size formations pushed into Gaza after nightfall Saturday, beginning a long-awaited ground offensive against the area's Hamas rulers after a week of intense aerial b****ardment. Black smoke billowed over Gaza City at first light as bursts of machine gun fire rang out.

The ground operation is the second phase in an offensive that began as a weeklong aerial onslaught aimed at halting Hamas rocket fire that has reached deeper and deeper into Israel, threatening major cities and one-eighth of Israel's population.

The new deaths brought the death toll in the Gaza Strip to more than 500 since Dec. 27, according to Palestinian health officials and U.N. officials, who say at least 100 civilians are among the dead.

TV footage showed Israeli troops with night-vision goggles and camouflage face paint marching in single file. Artillery barrages preceded their advance, and they moved through fields and orchards following b****-sniffing dogs to guard against booby-traps.

The offensive focused on northern Gaza, where most of the rockets are fired into Israel, but at least one incursion was reported in the southern part of the strip. Hamas uses smuggling tunnels along the southern border with Egypt to bring in weapons.

Ground forces did not enter major Gaza towns and cities, instead fighting in rural communities and open areas militants often use to launch rockets and mortar rounds.

Gaza City's civilians cowered inside, while terrified residents in other areas fled in fear. In the southern town of Rafah, one man loaded a donkey cart with mattresses and blankets preparing to flee.

Lubna Karam, 28, said she and the other nine members of her family spent the night huddled in the hallway of their Gaza City home. The windows of the house were blown out days earlier in an Israeli airstrike, and the family has been without electricity for a week, surviving without heat and eating cold food.

She said no one slept overnight. "We keep hearing the sounds of airplanes and we don't know if we'll live until tomorrow or not," she said.

Gaza health officials said the dead included a 12-year-old girl, five members of a single family, eight civilians killed by a tank shell in the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya, and an ambulance driver.

In his first public comments on the operation, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told his Cabinet on Sunday that Israel could not allow its civilians to continue to be targeted by rockets from Gaza.

"This morning I can look every one you in the eyes and say the government did everything before deciding to go ahead with the operation. This operation was unavoidable," he said.

The Israeli chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, told a meeting of Cabinet ministers that most of the fighting was at close range, with Hamas preferring to fight in built-up areas rather than on open ground. Ashkenazi said the operation aimed to take over areas militants use to launch rockets.

Military intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin told the Cabinet that Hamas was using mosques, public institutions and private houses as ammunition stores.

Yuval Diskin, the head of Israel's Shin Bet security service, told the ministers there was a "weakening" in Hamas' desire to keep fighting. Still, he said, while the Hamas political leadership has been hit hard, its military organization has "yet to be dealt the harsh blow Israel expects it to be dealt." The security officials' comments were relayed to the press by the Cabinet secretary, Oved Yehezkel.

A senior military officer said Hamas was well-prepared for the Israeli incursion into Gaza, a densely populated territory of 1.4 million where militants operate and easily hide in the crowded urban landscape. He said the operation was "not a rapid one that would end in hours or a few days."

Still, he said, Israel would not remain in Gaza "for the long term." He spoke on condition of anonymity in accordance with army regulations.

"You entered like rats," Hamas spokesman Ismail Radwan told Israeli soldiers in a statement on Hamas' Al Aqsa TV. "Gaza will be a graveyard for you, God willing," he said.

The Hamas Interior Ministry said it was still in control of Gaza and had captured residents collaborating with Israel, as well as traders exploiting the situation to inflate their prices.

Rocket fire into Israel has persisted, and more than 30 rockets and mortar shells fell in Israel on Sunday morning, sending Israelis scrambling for b**** shelters. Two Israelis were lightly wounded. In much of southern Israel, school has been canceled and life has been largely paralyzed.

While the air offensive presented little risk for Israel's army, sending in ground troops is a much more dangerous proposition. Hamas is believed to have some 20,000 gunmen and has had time to prepare. Israeli leaders had resisted a ground invasion for months, fearing heavy casualties.

Israel has called up tens of thousands of reserve soldiers, which defense officials said could enable a far broader ground offensive. The troops could also be used in the event Palestinian militants in the West Bank or Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon decide to launch attacks, as Hezbollah did in 2006 when Israel was in the midst of a large operation in Gaza.

An armored force south of Gaza City penetrated as deep as the abandoned settlement of Netzarim, which Israel left along with other Israeli communities when it pulled out of Gaza in 2005.

That move effectively cut off Gaza City, the territory's largest population center with some 400,000 residents, from the rest of Gaza to the south.

Israel launched the air campaign against Gaza on Dec. 27 with the aim of halting incessant rocket fire on its south. The operation appears to have slowed but not halted the rocket fire.

Hundreds of rockets have hit Israel since the offensive began, and four Israelis have been killed. The relatively low number of Israeli casualties is largely due to warning sirens that give residents notice of incoming missiles and allow them to take cover.

The death toll in Gaza has outraged many. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon conveyed his "extreme concern and disappointment" to Olmert and called for an "immediate end" to the operation.

Denunciations also came from the French government, which unsuccessfully proposed a two-day truce earlier this week, and from Egypt, Turkey and Jordan, Muslim nations with ties to Israel.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a rival of Hamas who governs from the West Bank, condemned the Israeli invasion as "brutal aggression."

An Israeli government statement said Israeli leaders have been in contact with their counterparts abroad and encou

COPS FREE ABDUCTED WOMAN

An abducted woman was freed and her abductor shot and injured during a incident at the Natioanl Heroes Park at Heroes Circle in Kingston on saturday night, police reported.

A sub-machine gun was taken from the alleged abductor. He has since been admitted to hospital, police say.

The alleged abductor, Kevin Robinson, 30, a tiler from Arnold Road, Kingston 4, has since been charged with abduction, assault at common law and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

Efforts to speak with the woman yesterday were futile as she declined to comment on the incident.

Police told THE STAR that shortly before 10 p.m., a couple was at the National Heroes Park when they were approached by a man armed with a gun. The gunman ordered the man to leave, held on to the woman and left with her to another section of the park.

Going to ground

It is understood that the police were alerted and went in search of the gunman. On the approach of the police, the man laid on the ground and forced the woman to do the same.

As the lawmen drew closer, he jumped to his feet and aimed the gun at them.

They took evasive action and opened fire hitting him. The woman was not hurt.

An M1 Enforcer sub-machine gun, with two rounds of .380 cartridges in the magazine, was taken from him. He was taken to hospital where he was admitted in serious condition.

Sav Impact touches few

The drums kicked loudly, the bass guitar rumbled and the rhythmic sounds of the guitar and keyboard signalled that patrons were in for a night of musical treat at Sav Impact.

Although the grounds of the Llandilo Entertainment Complex in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, remained virtually scanty for the duration of the show on New Year's night, those in attendance were determined that nothing would prevent them from enjoying themselves.

Slated to start at 9 p.m., the promoters delayed the start of the show for an hour. When the Impact Band opened and the musical key synchronised, a different vibe was instantly created.

Low turnout

Some persons outside were concerned that the show might have been cancelled due to the low turnout. However, when the music echoed across the precincts, they started entering to witness the action for themselves.

A number of Westmoreland-based upcoming artistes who christened the stage demonstrated that they had the talent, the professionalism and the lyrical content to move a notch further into musical stardom.

Attempted to arrest him

They included Granson, Edge Michael, the comical Justice Merchant, Vengeance, Iyah Blaze, Whisky Baggio, Timmi Burrell and Ras Slick. The performances were free of foul language for the most part of the show, except for Whisky Baggio.

It even turned uglier when Busy Signal was introduced onstage to do his stint. His performance was punctuated with expletives. Busy was being backed by a soundtrack and about 10 minutes into his set, he was angered when a group of musicians were testing their instruments onstage.

Respect for the law

He reeled off a barrage of profanities in the presence of police officers. At the end of his performance, the police attempted to arrest him but he escaped their dragnet.

Respect was observed for the lawmen when Etana, Queen Ifrica, Coco Tea, Bugle, Stevie Face, the girls group M.B.C, queen of the dancehall, Lady Saw, and Vybz Kartel performed.

Lady Saw and Vybz Kartel made frequent outbursts that they would maintain a clean performance and showed respect for the law. The Westmoreland police said they would be taking steps to have a summons served on Busy Signal.

Etana did not fail to thrill the audience, as she gave a sterling performance.

Fire of unknown origin damaged a section of the Jubilee Market at West Queen Street and West Parade in downtown, Kingston, yesterday.

The Kingston Central police, who are investigating, reported that about 12:15 was seen coming from a section of the market.

The police and fire brigade were summoned and four fire units - two from Trench Town and two from York Park, extinguished the blaze - but not before several stalls owned by vendors were destroyed.

Up to late yesterday, an estimate of the damage was not yet ascertained.

PMI tours 'Spain' Organisation gathers information on the way forward

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer

spanish town

Several communities in Spanish Town, St Catherine, were toured by members of the Peace Management Initiative (PMI) and other relevant agencies on Friday.

The tour, in which representatives from the Social Development Commission and Ministry of National Security took part, was done in Tawes Pen, Ellerslie Pen, Rivoli and Gravel Heights where hundreds of people were forced to flee their homes after threats from gunmen.

The PMI was led by Horace Levy, who took time out to hear the views of the residents. He said the aim of the exercise was to gather information about the communities with a view of how to move forward.

Difficult to patrol

Meanwhile, head of the St Catherine North Police, Superintendent, Assan Thompson, said Gravel Heights is a very difficult area to police. He said the unplanned nature of the community makes it even harder for the police to properly penetrate the area.

The senior cop said the road network is also non-existent but, however, reassured "the police will be doing their job".

Many residents said they were thankful for the visit and hoped it would bear fruits of peace.

findImg.php?pic_size=200&table_name=news_img_tab&table_field=img_id&img_id=1653 Chedda, born Tyrello Johnson a savvy lyricist and one of Jamaicas' fastest rising deejay is steadily on a path to etch his name in the history books of dancehall.

Son of the legendary dancehall artiste Daddy Screw whose real name is Micheal Alexander Johnson, this up coming entertainer has nothing but music and the drive to excel thumping through his veins.

A product of the inner city, he's the epitome of garrison and knows the perils and struggles of that lifestyle which is also evident in his music.  During his early years after attending Excelsior High an institution that has produced other national greats such as fast bowler Courtney Walsh amongst others he realized his true calling and decided to pursue the treacherous path in an effort to achieve his life long dream.

Influenced greatly by his mother, Chedda who sports a very calm demeanor is very grounded and disciplined. Since the dawning of the new year (2008) Chedda is slowly on the rise and has no intent on slowly down anytime soon. The young artiste whom many industry insiders considers a legend in the making expect great things in the near future.

Some of his musical influences  includes his father, Daddy Screw, Bob Marley, the warlord Bounty Killer, the Doctor Beenie Man, the Emperor from Portmore Vybz Kartel, Aidonia and last but by no means least his Grandparents. Chedda's hot new single "My Rifle" on a rhythm of with a similar name is presently scorching the airwaves and is on the verge of hitting the mainstream soon.

According yo Chedda "my father, daddy screw was a major influence in my life because he was the one who really taught me everything I needed to know so I was taught the trade from a early age".

GO CHEDDA MI ARTISTE!!!!!! YA'LL SUPPORT HIM MAN HE'S GOOD.

LISBON (AFP) The world's oldest living person, Portuguese national Maria de Jesus, died Friday at the age of 115, the Lusa news agency reported.

Born September 10, 1893, Maria de Jesus became the world's oldest living person after the death of American Edna Parker on November 26, also aged 115.

A family member told the Lusa news agency that de Jesus died "just after 10:00 am (GMT) while en route to hospital.

De Jesus was born in a poor area in Urquiera, close to Ourem in central Portugal. She started working in agriculture at the age of 12 and never went to school, remaining unable to write and read for her entire life.

After marrying, she moved to the town of Corujo with her husband where she brought up her six children.

De Jesus never "fell ill, nor took any medication," her daughter Maria Madalena told Lusa.

After the death of Maria de Jesus, American Gertrude Baines, born April 6, 1894, becomes the world's oldest person, according to the Gerontology Research Group.

The Los Angeles-based organisation keeps a database of people worldwide who are more than 110 years old.

Police Busy hunting Signal!

I thought Busy Signal said that "mi nah guh a jail again"... perhaps he might have forgoten because there are reports that the police is searching for him. It is reported that The Westmoreland Police are looking for DJ, Busy Signal in order to charge him for using what is discribed as a barrage of expletives at Sav Impact stage show in Llandilo in the parish on New Year's night.

According to the report "Busy's behaviour was so crude that some fans and patrons expressed shock and disgust at his outburst, which some openly condemned as totally unnecessary and unwarranted."

It also indicated that there were several police personel present at the show and Signal continued to unleash the expletives.

The report further stated that "Busy was being backed by a soundtrack, while a group of musicians were quietly testing their instruments ahead of the next performer.

The deejay became very annoyed and blurted: "A wha di ...deh gwaan?" He looked around and upon seeing the men, he asked the audience: "Sav dat right?" "No," the crowd responded.

Busy walked up towards the men, as they were about to make their exit and shouted in the microphone: "Hey, don't mek mi tell unu fi go ... face. Hey mi a cool youth sometime. Alliance say nuh ... yuself... bwoy."

At the end of his 22-minute performance, a team of police personnel rushed backstage to arrest him, but the deejay escaped.

Said an officer: "He jumped off the step and escaped in a vehicle. We did not know which vehicle he was travelling in so we missed him. We will be trying to charge him as soon as possible."

SO BUSY.. you need to turn yourself in and end this matter quickly ..we cant have a man talented like you have another thing to be worried about. Anyway write another hit song about this incident... Hat Head Hat Head.. lol

They are labelled as dons, area leaders and, in some cases, shottas, but the men who "run" some of the country's toughest inner-city communities say they have been made to fill the gaps left vacant by a system found to be wanting.

In addition to "holding the corner" as a means of protection for the residents, these men say they are constantly straddled with the problems of unemployment and lack of educational opportunities for many of their charges who, they say, would trade in their guns for meaningful employment any day.

Many in the 17 communities visited in Kingston and St Andrew in the past week have readily committed to the Fresh Start concept being sold to leaders in these volatile communities by the Pastor Al Miller-led National Transformation Programme (NTP) and the Peace Management Initiative, but say this must be rewarded with development for these areas.

The cry for jobs is the loudest, as they say contrary to popular belief, the youths on the corners are willing to work.

In Woodford Park in Kingston, the three top men who met with the peace promotion team are no older than 30 years of age. They are the ones who are looked up to by the mothers who have no fathers for their children and the youths who themselves are unemployed and have no means of taking care of their families.

"Ninety per cent of the youth dem no want sit dung pon the corner but them lef' school and dem no have nutten fi do," said one of the men.

The men said they welcomed the fact that their input was being sought as too often dialogue was being held with the wider community who cannot speak on their behalf.

"Is the youth dem weh a fire gun pon each other dem fi talk to," said another man.

In the Downtown community of Telaviv, the top leader said "if a youth no see what dem a ban dem belly for, them won't do it".

He admitted that they have been maintaining peace for a year and six months now and they, too, have not seen any opportunities for those who have put down their guns.

He said one thing which constantly derails efforts at curbing crime is when nothing is put in place as incentives for youngsters.

He said that when a drug don who would support 15 youths is taken out of the system, these dependents turn to violence.
"The man dem hungry and have gun and no man nah dead fi hungry," he said. "What really happen is that when dem teck out the drugs man, dem no replace him with no development for the youths to earn a living."

He said this is exactly what happened in St James, resulting in bouts of violence in parts of that parish.

A leader in Jungle said he endorses the idea of a maintained peace as this is critical if a weekly dance in the area, which feeds many, is to remain profitable.

He said that each Monday he has to find at least $3,000 to give to children to attend school and is in the process of building a wholesale to provide further employment for some persons in the area.

In Allman Town, an area recently plagued by violent flare-ups, the men had the same cry - they want work, but none can be found.

They said they have maintained peace in the community for months now and yet they are waiting to see some of the promised development and employment opportunities for their area.

"Right now, is just that things short and so some people get short-tempered and nah hold it and so dem will go and rob a man," said one youth.

However, he insisted that those who rob are in the minority as most residents are seeking income-generating projects for their community.

They have used the proceeds from a dance to buy three bikes which they will be using to offer delivery services.

When work is available, one youth said, this occupies their time and results in maintained peace in the community.

In Southside, the men who met with Pastor Miller and his team said they would love to see development come to their area in the form of skills training for the youngsters.

The leaders from Rockfort, Burger Gully and Bayshore communities said the political directorate has left the place wanting.

They lamented that there are a lot of skilled youths and even university graduates in these communities who cannot find employment.

"What happen now is that crime has turn fashion, and so if something happen a East a man a West want fi do that to, and so we need to have some community things fi teck people mind off the violence," said one young man.

They also accused the church of failing them, saying that they remain isolated from their issues.

"Them segregate themselves from we and say them nah meet with we cause we a gunman," one man said.

They said they would welcome the intervention of the church as the average gunman doesn't want his son to do the same.

At Maxfield Avenue, a top man in the area said they want some serious development for the community, now that peace is holding there.

One man lamented that while there are talks of sprucing up Jamaica this is only being done in tourist resorts and there is no sprucing up of their communities.

"Whole heap a work needed and that is the only way crime and violence a go stop, cause bigger tankers and guns nah go stop killing," he said.

In Cassava Piece, another of the community visited by the NTP, the men said they are now focusing on developing their community themselves since there has not been any outside intervention.

One young man who is currently manufacturing what he labelled the 'Gully God' clothes line, said he is now looking at ways to expand. In addition, they are also setting up a small computer lab for the children.

"With all the bad vibes we showing say something good de here," he said.

At Big Yard, both Beenie Man and Vybz Kartel who arrived in the area while the team was visiting said they endorsed the Fresh Start approach.

"From yu say Fresh Start a dat we say to," Beenie Man said, adding that with no option for work, many of the youths have been forced to become shottas.

"The teacher endorse it, the pastor pass it and so we need the fresh start inna the place," Kartel added.

On Friday, when the peace team along with members of the St Catherine arm of the Social Development Commission (SDC) visited Tawes Pen and Ellerslie Pen in Spanish Town, dozens of men were seen either playing board games or hanging out.

The top men in these areas said the men are willing to work. They pointed to a National Water Commission project last year where men from opposing sides worked alongside each other as an example that employment also helps in maintaining peace.

A man in a group aligned to the Clansman gang said employment is one of the main things that will continue to fuel the violence.

"If me sit down and don't have anything fi do and me go out there and see someone with dem tings me woulda want teck it," he said.

He also said there were a lot of youths in the community who could not afford to go to school. "Is true me no have it fi send some a them juvenile yah go school," he said.

Pastor Miller said what he has seen in the communities only affirms that the country has a problem. However, he said it is not beyond our ability to overcome and restore.

"I feel a genuine desire for change, prosperity and development because everybody is at the point where they tired of the tension and war," he told the Sunday Observer.

He said attention must now be turned to development for these areas and already he is seeking to identify interventions to meet the needs.

He said a second issue to tackle will be the improvement of the relationship between the communities and the police. He said he is of the belief that the police themselves want to see this improvement. "We want to help the police to restore confidence between some police and the citizens," he said.

The other stage, he said, will involve transformation of these communities, which will deal with employment, education and parenting issues.

As for a timeline, he said this is immediate and as such funds will have to be found quickly, with the help of the church and the private sector.

JAH KNO THIS LONG NUH ra**!

A claim by One Order gangsters that their dances are being unduly targeted by the police and shut down at the stipulated 2:00 am, while those of their rivals, the Clansman gang, are being allowed to go on through the night has been rubbished by the constabulary.

The accusation of favouritism by the police was made by a One Order leader on Friday when the National Transformation Programme (NTP) led by Pastor Al Miller and the Peace Management Initiative, visited Spanish Town, St Catherine on its continued peace trek into violence-plagued communities.

"If you a police and a peace officer you haffi try and balance the ting," said a top One Order man who claimed that the police have always shut down the dances held by the One Order leader while allowing dances in the Clansman-controlled Dela Vega City, which is next door the Spanish Town Police Station, to continue way into the morning.

He said the One Order leader was committed to seeing peace in Spanish Town, especially since he now operates a disco and is in the process of registering his recently established company.

Another man, said to be the head of the One Order and who also met with the NTP team, said he is committed to maintaining peace in the area but he wanted the police to be fair.

He said on three occasions his dances, which were peaceful events, were locked down prematurely by the police and dozens of men hauled away to jail.

Following that, they said the Clansmen had a memorial dance for their former leader, Donovan 'Bulbie' Bennett, which was allowed to go on until 8:00 in the morning, although it was held almost next door to the police station.

The One Order leader said despite these things, he has encouraged those under his command to continue to hold the peace.

"Me beg them fi just easy, because me no want Spanish Town fi erupt, and so me a try me best fi control my people," he said.
However, a police source who opted not to be named, said the claim of favouritism was nonsense.

"The Clansmen have been complaining bitterly, saying that the police have been unduly harsh on them, especially since the murder of Douglas Chambers," the cop said.
Chambers, who was chairman of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, was shot dead outside the state-run bus company's head office in Spanish Town in June last year.

According to the cop, his colleagues have staged operations in the Clansman-dominated communities of Jones Avenue, Nursery, Dela Vega City, and along the Sligoville Road up to Gravel Heights.

Friday's tour also brought out the deep divisions between both gangs, even as they both claimed that the violence between them was being fuelled by police bias.

"The police dem want we fi war because them say when we at war we will kill off each other and them will come in and kill the rest," said one member of the One Order.

He said they had already put measures in place to ensure that if someone from their side creates mayhem in another area, they would be dealt with.

However, that was denied by the men from the Clansman gang when the NTP team met with them.

According to one top Clansman, when reports are made to the One Order leader he denies knowledge of any wrongdoing.

"Everything him deny and say him no know bout it. How him a leader and him no know wha dem ah do?" he asked.

He claimed that people from their area are constantly robbed of their goods by men from One Order. It was only recently, he said, that a man selling shoes on a cart was robbed of all his goods by men from that gang who took away his cart. He said when the matter was reported to the One Order leader, he denied knowledge of it.

The NTP team also heard complaints of police mistreatment of people in the communities visited, a common accusation they also heard from residents in the Kingston communities of Big Yard, off Mannings Hill Road; Cassava Piece; Woodford Park; Whitfield Town; Southside; Telaviv; Rockfort; Burger Gully; and Bayshore.

"How comes the police can't teck a gun from a man without killing him and when the don want a gun him just send fi it and him haffi get it?" asked one man in Tawes Pen, St Catherine.

When the peace team visited Big Yard on New Year's Eve, one man alleged that people in Cassava Piece are allowed to keep their dances for as long as they want, while dance promoters in his area have been denied permits or have had their dances shut down prematurely.

This, he said, has caused bitterness, anger and frustration among the young men under his control who believe the police are showing bias.

"When the youths dem look pon these things it just ah mek them more frustrated and just ah mek the tings get worse," he said.

He claimed the police constantly hara** men in their area, while the men at Cassava Piece are allowed to do what they want.

However, two men from Cassava Piece said they do not trust the police.

"Them and everybody ah link and they are a major part of the problem," one of them said.

In Woodford Park, the men said peace can be maintained in that community but the cops need to know how to treat people.

"When they come in here dem see we and say 'b...y bwoy, come yah, how yu face tan so?'," one youth said, adding that if the police don't change their ways it will only make the situation worse.

However, another young man related a positive experience he had with one cop but admitted that it surprised him.

"Me see police come in here and say to we 'gentlemen, ah me work me a do and me asking yu fi a search', and we so shock cause we never hear that yet, we haffi wonder weh him come from," the young man said.

He said they have always co-operated with police like those because the cops respected them first as human beings.

Ann Coulter and Michelle ObamaLooks like the GOP's head cougar has gone from political attack dog to snotty celeb fashion critic.

In her new book, "Guilty: Liberal "Victims" and Their Assault on America" Ann Coulter slams Michelle Obama for her hairstyle and clothes. Coulter calls Michelle an obvious Jackie Kennedy wannabe with her "flipped-under hair, the sleeveless A-line dresses" and "the short strands of fake pearls."

Good news: Coulter reportedly had to have her jaw wired shut. Bad news: She can still type.

Kiprich Calls Monster 'Coward'

- KipRich, Coward

Shortly after his stunning Sting 2008 performance, KipRich wrote and released the single Coward which throws lyrical daggers at his opponents, the Monster Empire, which consists of Ghost, Round Head and General B.

At the latter part of 2008 the KipRich-Monster Empire feud increased in momentum after KipRich released the track, Dem Caan Cow Wi -- and as Sting approached, it was undoubtedly one of the clashes to watch out for. However, that night as KipRich issued his ultimatum to the trio in his full black, pseudo-assassin wear...the Monster Empire did not enter the stage to take up the challenge infront of the over-35,000-person venue.

As such, KipRich decided to offer a final post-Sting knockout aimed at the group (previously named Monster Shock), who he has re-named "Monster Flop" in a number of his tracks. "Three duppy ah Jamworld; di whole ah Sting ah tear dung/Dem say dem ah mek hits but mi nevah hear none..." (From the track Coward).   "Nuh Behaviour" (as Kippo is often heard saying), indeed!   The track can now be heard on any one of the island's top radio stations.

- Fun Fact About KipRich
(The dawning of "KipRich")

In the late 90s, artiste, Chico, introduced KipRich to his (now) manager, Audley "Breddi" Allen. At the time KipRich was called "Crazy Kid" and shortly after the two met, Breddi re-named him, "KipRich" which means "keep rich" because of his "blinging style". Then in 1999 the Dancehall world was introduced to the young phenomenon "KipRich" with the track Leggo Di Bwoy.

HAHAHA!!

Gays are out and bad

Ivestigations reveal that the parties are monthly, 18-and over, males-only dancehall soirees. In the one that we watched, at least three-quarters of the 'men' in attendance are femme. And they all appear extremely happy, or should we just say, exceedingly gay.

gay1.jpgThose not wearing the skirts and blouses preferred by the cross-dressers, have on decidedly female garb: multiple piercings, high heels with female pencil foot jeans (you can tell because the zipper flaps go from right to left), artificial breasts, butt pads, and of course, wigs.  The dainty ones are femme with a capital F: no facial hair, nails well manicured and hair well coiffed. Not to mention the well bleached faces.

In one telling scene on the DVD, the selector spins Tony Matterhorn's Goodas Fi Dem, a petite gender-bender sporting braids down his back steps out in the middle of the crude circle on the dancehall floor. He swizzles his hips in a provocative fashion, then bends over, revealing a baby blue g-string that hovers above a pair of tight-fitting white jeans. The crowd hoots its approval.

A bleached-out face man jumps in front of the camera and blurts out, "Mi hole good, yea, mi man want me."

"Yea, Wendy a good good drag queen who can go Black and White and Passa Passa," another she-male declared.

gay2.jpgWord-dropping is quite common as well. One sweaty, portly male shouts at the camera, "Some gal fava old clothes party," pointing his jaw in the direction of another outrageously dressed male with a Mohawk hairstyle.

Spragga Benz and Lady Saw's Backshot is a clear favourite at the party. There are several thuggish-looking gays who give gun-finger salutes to hardcore dancehall artistes like Beenie Man's Reverse the Ting, Bounty Killer's Bulletproof Vest and even Mavado's songs, and do the latest dances like Killa Swing.

gay3.jpgThey even dance to Church Heathen, the selector admitting: "we de ah battyman party right now, but little more we ah go church!"

The deejays are going to be ticked off when they see this DVD.

Did the gays leak this DVD deliberately to flash their lifestyle in our faces? Or do they truly don't care what anyone wants to say about how they choose to live?
0102_john_travolta_ex_01.jpgUPDATE: 11:50 ET. We've learned John Travolta has made arrangements with a funeral home in the Bahamas to ship Jett's body on Tuesday, presumably to Florida. The autopsy will not be performed until Monday morning.

Sources at the Freeport Grand Bahama Police Department tell TMZ the Serious Crimes Section is conducting an investigation into the death of Jett Travolta, the 16-year-old son of John Travolta and Kelly Preston, but cops don't believe any crime was involved.

A detective tells us the investigation is being run out of the Central Detective Unit, Serious Crimes Section, because of the high profile nature of the death.

We're told it is still an active investigation and the time line may be important in determining cause of death ... specifically, Jett was last seen going to the bathroom on January 1st, yet his body was not discovered until 10 AM the next day.

It is unclear if Jett fell and then had a seizure -- or if a seizure caused him to fall.

Speed blamed for Brompton tragedy

TENESHA Cordwell would love to forget the afternoon of last Thursday, New Year's Day.

She was sitting under a tree in her front yard overlooking Brompton square about 15 miles west of Santa Cruz, when her brother Raj sped past in his Mitsubishi Lancer only for him and two others to meet their deaths seconds later.

On Friday when she spoke to the Sunday Observer, Tenesha recalled the awful, thunderous sound as the car - having rounded the corner at Brompton Square and gone out of her view - crashed into the left side of an oncoming truck.
She remembers crying out "lawd gad, mi bredda dead, mi nephew dead!"

As it turned out, her nephew Oliver Cordwell, 20, who was in the front passenger seat of the left-hand drive car, escaped with mild concussion and bruises. But Raj Cordwell, 25, a graphic designer employed to the University of Technology (UTECH), who was less than a mile from his family home at Lewis Town, died on the spot.

Two teenagers who were on the back seat - Kennijah 'baller' Stewart, 17, who attended Lacovia High and Khrisdale 'OJ' Facey, 17, a student of Sydney Pagon High - also died instantly. Stewart and Facey, cousins from the same neighbourhood in Goshen, a few miles east of Santa Cruz, were described on Friday as "inseparable" in life.

The fifth person - the only female in the car - 15-year-old Olivia Facey, younger sister of Khrisdale and a student of Lacovia High, remained in hospital yesterday nursing head and other injuries.

The driver of the truck, 53-year-old Nicholas Hart of Whitehall District in North West St Elizabeth, apparently escaped unhurt.
Raj and his young friends were reportedly on their way to pick up Oliver's friend Deondra Facey, older sister of Khrisdale and Olivia, in Brompton prior to a trip to the Font Hill Beach Park, just a few miles further west.

Reports vary but all suggest that ultimately the accident which occurred at about 3:40 pm was triggered by speeding. The Constabulary Communication Network says that "On reaching a section of the road, Raj tried to avoid an oncoming mini-bus that was overtaking the Leyland motor truck. He lost control of the motor car which ran under the truck..."

Brompton resident Byron Graham who was sitting at the round-about at the centre of the square told the Sunday Observer that he suddenly became aware of the speeding left-hand drive car "right beside me".

The car, he appeared to suggest, was going so fast that it had drifted from the left side of the road to the right as it negotiated the bend in the square.

"Some people say the car get out of control because it swing away from the bus which overtake the truck," he said. "But from what I saw, the bus had already overtaken the truck from down the road when the car come beside me. The trouble was that the car was on the right side of the road and had to swing back to the left, but is like 'im swing too hard and had to come back right..."

He told how the Mitsubishi Lancer over-corrected itself to the left and then made its fatal swing, back across the face of the truck to end up in the bigger, slower vehicle's left side.

"It was bad, very, very bad," said Graham, his face forlorn.

In the small village of Lewis Town, just down the road from the scene of the tragedy, Raj's mother Nilgo Cordwell, surrounded by family and friends, struggled with her grief.
Raj had been one of six children and the first to "go", she said. "He was a friendly, good, quiet person and always humble," she added.

Twenty miles away in Goshen, Sharon Stewart, a mother of three including Kennijah, was a picture of despair. She told of how Kennijah, who had been a member of his school's cadet corp, had planned a military career.

"Only last week 'im seh to mi 'Mummy, as soon as mi lef school mi a go straight in the army, nuh worry yu self''," said Stewart.

A few hundred metres away, also in Goshen, Deondra Facey who heard of the tragedy as she fried chicken for the beach trip, spoke of her brother Khrisdale as a fun-loving, jocular person and a friend.

"You couldn't say anything bad about him, he was a good person and he was my friend," said Deondra.

Bad neighbours!

PORTLAND accident victim Aaron 'Chippie' Lewis' body was barely in the morgue before some of his Port Antonio neighbours allegedly entered his shop and cleaned out his Christmas stock.

And the town's former mayor, Benny White, is not amused. He told the Sunday Observer that as soon as word reached the district of Comfort Castle that Lewis had succumbed to his injuries, unscrupulous persons looted the shop and cleaned out all its contents.

"I feel very ashamed that in the midst of grief, to really know that people within the same community could end up robbing one of the deceased who own a shop. He stocked up for Christmas and by the time people heard he (had) died, the same night, they went into the shop and cleaned out everything, They did not even leave the empty bottles," a despondent White said.

Eight of the 14 people who died in the December 20 accident were from the farming district of Mill Bank.

White also bemoaned the fact that while victims were suffering and dead at the scene of the accident, others were busy cleaning out their pockets, stealing money and cellular phones.

"It's not that it happened in Westmoreland, where nobody don't know them. Everybody knew who the people were and they still robbed them. The people who did this are heartless and without morals. It really hurts," White said.

He also said persons in Mill Bank had broken into the home of injured farmer, Linford Jackson, and stolen his spray pan and other items. Jackson is now recuperating in the St Ann's Bay Hospital.

Last Tuesday, Jackson told the Daily Observer he was robbed of his cellular phone by a man who assisted in lifting him out of the ravine on a crude stretcher after the spill.

The Portland police have since launched an investigation into reports that victims of the accident were robbed.

Meanwhile, residents of Mill Bank say the tragedy will result in a loss of income for most members of the community. Eight residents of that district were killed in the accident and, according to the residents, the dead were the ones who would buy their produce wholesale and sell at a profit in the market.

"They were all higglers who were vital to the economy of this area. They bought goods from the farmers and made money for everybody. Now that they have died, the people are wondering who is going to take their produce off their hands as only two persons are left who do that, and they can't buy from everybody," White said.
