The BART police officer that pulled the trigger and sparked another riot based on injustice has resigned:
Scheduled to meet with BART police investigators today, the BART Police officer involved in the tragic shooting New Years Day at Fruitvale Station submitted his resignation effective immediately. On Monday, the officers attorney postponed a meeting that had been scheduled by BART investigators for Tuesday and sought to defer the meeting until next week. BART investigators declined the delay and scheduled a meeting with the officer for this morning. At this mornings scheduled meeting, the officers attorney and his union representative submitted his resignation letter. The officer was not present. BART investigators have urged the officer to meet and cooperate with the transit agencys investigation into the fatal shooting. BART Police investigators have notified the Alameda County District Attorneys Office of the resignation and this development. The District Attorneys office is conducting an independent probe of the January 1, 2009 shooting. The BART Police investigation will continue to seek and examine all available evidence and will continue its full cooperation with the ongoing independent investigation by the District Attorney. This shooting is a tragic event in every respect for all involved, BART General Manager Dorothy Dugger said. We recognize that the family and friends of Oscar Grant are in mourning and we extend our condolences.
Oscar Grant did not have to die, but the pig that killed him should have to suffer some extreme consequences. This type of behavior must be extinguished. F*ck a Thug ass Cop too.
Wyclef Jeans sister, Melky Jean got married this past weekend in South Florida and Mavado was a guest of the bride and groom.
Melky and her husband, Supreme planned an amazingly lavish wedding a luxurious resort and one of the brides special wishes was for Mavado to attend.
Melky, who is a Grammy nominated songwriter, considers Mavado as her favorite artist. The Gully God has also been a friend of Wyclefs for some time now. They have collaborated on recordings in the past and plan on continuing to do so.
From the wedding Mavado went on to rock the cities of Orlando and Tampa with two sold out performances.
This year has started off with a bang for Mavado whose sophomore album titled, Mr Brooks - a Better Tomorrow, will be on shelves next month.
With BETs 106 & Park set to jam the premiere of the So Special video; and his many promotional appearances, Mavado is definitely in line for greater things this in 2009.
Vybz Kartel - Krista Henry
Shouts of 'boo' have long been the standard cue in the dancehall for entertainers to cut their losses and make a hasty retreat off the stage - before bottles begin to fly.
However, since Sting 2008, fans of dancehall artistes Vybz Kartel and Mavado have been voicing their opinions beyond the stage shows and taking it to the party scene.
On New Year's Eve, loud cries of "boo", to the shock of many patrons, rang out at parties such as Absinthe, 11:59 and Destination Las Vegas, when songs from lyrical rivals Kartel and Mavado were played. The trend continued at other events, including the weekly Bembe Thursdays last week, where overzealous fans proclaimed Gaza over Gully, or vice versa, thus keeping the lyrical clash from Sting alive and well.
For the selectors, it is a difficult spot to be placed in when patrons boo songs that are played. DJ Marc Chin of Coppershot Disco has seen it happen at a lot of parties since Sting and has had to play to the divided crowds.
Dancehall culture
"Each artiste have dem supporters, so it isn't anything out of the ordinary ... It happen wid Beenie and Bounty before.
"The rival tradition just continues in the Jamaican dancehall culture. In a way, it's just like sports. Sporting fans boo the rival's team. It's something that will stop as soon as the confrontation dies down."
Mavado - Contributed
Razz from Razz and Biggy also believes the phenomenon, which he has seen happen at a number of events, will peter out. According to Razz, this is the first time he has seen something like this happen in a party, as not even during the 15-year-long Bounty/Beenie feud did patrons bring their partiality to the party scene. He told the STAR, "It's going to happen 'cause is like half seh Gully, half seh Gaza - is like the country split in half."
Razz believes, however, that the unpleasant responses to certain songs is in part brought on by the selectors who play long sets of Kartel and Mavado clash songs.
"Di selectors, when they play a song a seh who seh Gaza, then they play another song and seh who seh Gully. For me I play so that people can just dance and party 'cause, obviously, if yuh seh Gully the Gaza people a go boo, and vice versa," he said.
Selector Firelinks has tried to bring peace recently at New Year's Bembe, telling music fans to keep the booing for the stage shows and keep the parties 'nice'. After playing back-to-back Mavado and Kartel songs, he encouraged the fans not to take the music personal, but lyrical, and to encourage both artistes in their endeavours.
Though the process of becoming a part of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is fairly simple, it seems there are some people who prefer to pretend.
Just a month after two men were arrested and charged with impersonating an officer, arising from an incident that occurred at the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre, another has been charged with a similar offence. He has been identified as Omar Maitland, a 23-year-old security guard of a Lightbourne Road, Kingston 5, address.
He was arrested on January 2 at a popular hotel in Kingston. Reports are that at 10:25 p.m., the police received a call that a man was being disruptive and behaving in a boisterous manner on the premises. He was reportedly spoken to by security guards at the hotel, but told them that he was a policeman.
When the police arrived and accosted him, he reportedly also identified himself as a member of the JCF. He was, however, unable to provide a valid ID. He was searched and an imitation firearm found on his person. He was charged with illegal possession of a firearm. He is to appear in court soon.
Simple larceny
On Tuesday, two men who were earlier charged with impersonating an officer appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. One of the accused, Jermaine Vassell, an 18-year-old of a Seven West, Greater Portmore address, has also been charged with simple larceny, after being accused of stealing a police vest belonging to a detective corporal stationed at the Greater Portmore Police Station. Vassell was found with the vest at the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre on December 12 last year.
Reports are that the policeman locked his vest in a drawer at the station, but it went missing about five weeks before being found in Vassell's possession.
He and his co-accused, Akeem Rohan Davis, are to return to court on January 19.
In the meantime, the Half-Way Tree police are advising persons who pretend to be members of the JCF to desist, as they will be punished accordingly. The police are also advising that those who want to join the force should visit the JCF Recruiting Centre at 12 Ocean Boulevard, downtown Kingston, where they will be further advised.10 jobs, 600 seekers - Some of the more than 600 persons who turned up to be interviewed for 10 vacant posts at The Captain's Bakery and Grill, Half-Way Tree Road, St Andrew, yesterday. - Norman Grindley/acting Photography editor
More than 600 persons turned up to be interviewed to fill 10 vacancies at The Captain's Bakery and Grill on Half-Way Tree Road, St Andrew, yesterday, in the wake of the job crunch gripping the country.
Motorists slowed down at the local eatery on seeing the large crowd, thinking there was a strike at the company.
Andrene Thomas, one of the job seekers, was interviewed at 1 p.m., having arrived at the establishment 8 a.m.
"I will do anything," said the woman who travelled from Portmore, St Catherine.
"I am a very good cashier and I'm an excellent cook," she added.
During 2008, more than 8,000 people lost their jobs after their positions were made redundant in various sectors, including transport, manufacturing, agriculture and telecommunications.
Pearnel Charles, labour and social security minister, last week warned of more job cuts for this year in light of a global financial meltdown.
Yesterday, one of the job seekers said he was willing to wipe floors, as long as he would be paid.
Just wanted a job
Another prospect, Chris-Ann Bowes, who has been certified by the HEART Trust/NTA in hospitality and tourism industry, just wanted a job.
"You have a job can give me?" she asked The Gleaner team.
The hundreds of persons responded to an advertisement posted in local newspapers by the bakery to fill positions of chefs, clerks and equipment operators.
Persons of various backgrounds stood in the sun waiting to be interviewed. Some were teenagers, and some were their seniors dressed in suits, or jeans; and some had bright-coloured hairdos.
Captain Horace Burrell, the proprietor of Captain's Bakery, said about 10 staff members were pulled from their regular duties to help with the interviews.
He said he never expected to see so many applicants.
There may be good news for some of the shortlisted persons, as Burrell said, based on the response, some of the qualified persons would be asked to fill required posts at the bakery's other locations.
Thirty young men from the March Pen and Corlettes roads communities of St Catherine, are being trained by the Ministry of National Security as lifeguards and will be deployed to hotels upon completion of their training.
This was revealed in Spanish Town on Tuesday by permanent secretary in Ministry of National Security, Major Richard Reese. The men are said to be the first batch to be trained as lifeguard under the ministry's Community Security Initiative, where special inner-city communities are targeted to make youths more productive.
Agents of change
The 30 participants will start their training in Kingston today
Reese, in his message, implored the participants to be agents of change.
"I know that you can help in changing the views of persons outside of your community. You are very talented persons who are specially selected and you are blessed that spaces are awaiting your employment," he told the men.
Reese, who recently left the correctional service as commissioner of corrections, related stories about how hard work, dedication and discipline had helped him climb social and professional ladders. He told them that, despite the hardship, if they were disciplined, nothing could stop them.
Community initiative
The Community Security Initiative is a project that started in 2002 and has been implemented Mud Town, Matthews Lane and other depressed communities in the Corporate Area.
According to Patricia Balls, head of the Community Security Initiative, the cost for training the 30 men is over $200,000.
Persons willing to participate in the training programme must be able to read at the ninth grade level. In addition to swimming, they will also be taught ethics and basic survival skills.
'I know that you can help in changing the views of persons outside of your community. You are very talented persons who are specially selected and you are blessed that spaces are awaiting your employment.'Kidnappings doubled in 2008, but the high incidence of staged hostage taking in recent years has caused concern among police sleuths.
Data revealed by Errington Malcolm, acting deputy superin-tendent at the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID), show that there were 15 reported cases last year, compared with eight in 2007. These statistics are significantly lower, though, than the 38 kidnappings and abductions in 2006.
However, detectives said that 21 per cent - 13 reports - of cases over the last three years implicated hostages in ransom requests. Virtually all hostages suspected of hatching plots with conspirators refused to assist in police investigations, The Gleaner has learnt.
Public mischief
Though unable to provide The Gleaner with specifics on the investigations being pursued, OCID said many of these cases are already before the courts.
Individuals have been charged with causing public mischief in relation to bids, in conjunction with cronies, to extract financial gain from unsuspecting family and friends. Most hostages and hostage-takers fall in the 16-40 age cohort, the police said.
Acting Senior Superintendent Fitz Bailey, who heads OCID, credits the division's anti-kidnapping and anti-abduction strategies, as well as specialised training from Scotland Yard and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, with limiting the incidence of deadly violence in breaking cases.
However, OCID detectives are urging individuals who are approached with ransom requests to desist from unilaterally giving money to perpetrators. The police said such payouts complicate and hamper investigations, noting that it was often difficult to convince relatives that some hostages were complicit in kidnappings.
Paying ransoms
"If money needs to be paid out, a trained negotiator must properly supervise the situation at any stage it becomes necessary," said Detective Sergeant Colin Campbell.
"In case it is a situation where money has to be paid out, the life of the hostage must be taken into account first, and we can't be certain that the hostage is still alive, or that the persons making the demand have the person to be released, or that the hostage will be released safely, so we will encourage persons not to pay out any money."
Vigilance virtues
Never leave children alone or unsupervised.
Be careful with whom you leave children.
As soon as possible, teach children steps to avoid being abducted or kidnapped.
Bring it to the attention of an adult if children are in an uncomfortable situation.
Where possible don't take taxis alone.
Walk in groups.
Never loiter on the street.
Avoid walking near abandoned buildings, lots and shortcuts.
Abductions vs kidnappings
Carl Berry, detective sergeant, at the Organised Crime Investigation Division, emphasises that there is a difference between abduction and kidnapping.
"Abduction is in relation to a female, where she has been taken against her will (for sexual reasons), while kidnapping is taking male or female against their will, usually for a ransom," said Berry.Despite being entirely illegal, skin lightening creams are big business both in the UK and in Jamaica - but who are the women - and men - who use them? And who sells them?

Police in St Ann yesterday fatally shot one of five men who robbed patrons and proprietors at two business establishments in Cave Valley, St Ann, then engaged the lawmen in a gun battle at Bohemia district in the parish. A firearm was also taken from the deceased. Another was disarmed of his firearm, which was later handed over to the police. Three of the robbers were taken into police custody.
The dead man, identified only as 'Pepe', is of a Kingston address. The names of those in custody have been withheld pending an identification parade.
Struggle developed
Police reports are that shortly after 9:00 on Tuesday night, five men armed with guns and knives went to a shop at Borobridge district, where they robbed the proprietor of an undetermined sum of cash and jewellery. The gunmen then went to another shop at Cuffie Ridge district, where they also robbed the owner and patrons, of an undetermined amount of money.
During the robbery, a struggle developed between the gunmen and the patrons, who managed to disarmed one of a Westhurley .45 pistol. The hoodlums escaped in a waiting motor car. The police were summoned and the firearm handed over to them. Three of the patrons who had received stab wounds were taken to hospital where they were admitted in stable condition.
Special operation
At 4 a.m. yesterday, a team of police carried out a special operation in Cave Valley. The team was greeted with gunfire as they approached a house in Bohemia district. The fire was returned and a group of men ran from the building, still firing at the lawmen. When the shooting subsided, a search was conducted, and one of the men was found suffering from gunshot wounds. A 9mm Beretta pistol - serial number erased - with five rounds of ammunition was taken from the injured man. He was taken to the Percy Junor Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Barack Obamas presidential limo is in some need of serious pimping:
As a candidate, Barack Obama promoted hybrid cars. Auto enthusiasts have panned the design of the new presidential limo, which will be painted all black. Auto enthusiasts have panned the design of the new presidential limo, which will be painted all black.
As president, hell be handed the keys to one. Sort of. Shortly after taking the oath of office, Obama will climb into the Mother of All Hybrids part car, part truck and, from the looks of it, part tank.
In keeping with recent tradition, the Secret Service will place a brand-new presidential limousine into service January 20 to drive the new president on the 2-mile jaunt down Pennsylvania Avenue during the inaugural parade.
Already, spy photos of the limo with patches of gray primer have leaked out. And already, the reviews: Ugly as sin, says one car enthusiast on an auto Web site. Cant we make a hotter ride for our pres?
Sheesh, says another, why dont they just transport the president around in an Abrams tank. One news agency, noting its 8-inch-thick doors, says the limo can withstand a direct hit from an asteroid. But GM spokeswoman Joanne K. Krell laughed off the comments. And it will fix you a latte if you ask, she jokes.
This ride sounds like a luxury tank or some sh*t. Well, whatever it takes to keep Obama safe in these crazy times. Even that Nazi-ass Pope rides around in a bullet proof glass box.
Ragashanti says he feels he is being unfairly targeted by the commission. - Winston Sill
Dr Kingsley 'Ragashanti' Stewart, host of 'Ragashanti Live', has come out with all guns blazing and is accusing the Broadcasting Commission of wrongly targeting him.
"I am under siege. Right now, mi a protest fi mi rights, I am a law-abiding citizen and trust me, the Broadcasting Commission have me under pressure, dem a pressure me," he said.
The talk-show host further claimed, "The commission is personally attacking me, I have heard many sexual songs being played on radio in the same airtime and they are not being hara**ed. The inconsistencies prove that that I am being targeted personally. I just have one question for them, why is it that I broke the law when I played a Sparrow song? The song only alluded to a cat."
Sexual content
The talk-show host had played Sparrow's Ah fraid .... Bite Me on Monday during his programme. On Wednesday, Raga threatened to walk off the show and complained bitterly that he was being targeted by the commission, which was not satisfied with the lyrics of the song. The commission is said to have, in fact, requested a copy of a song played during his programme for an investigation.
This action, however, is being viewed by Ragashanti as a personal attack. During the interview yesterday, he accused the commission of being intolerant of anyone who is from the gra** roots. "They are ... dictator-like. They have a very profane disdain for ghetto people." Begging to be quoted, Stewart said, "They are an independent entity that is out of control. I understand their role to protect children from sexual content but why can't their actions be questioned?"
The commission in their statement on Wednesday also said that they had received a b**** threat at 12:21 p.m. "The caller used expletives and alleged that the commission was threatening to remove the host of the Newstalk 93 FM programme, 'Ragashanti Live' ... and, in return, action would be taken against the commission, specifically that a b**** had been planted at its office to be detonated in the afternoon," the release stated.
B**** threat
'Raga' does not believe, however, that there were any threats made to the commission. He accused the entity of trying to make a case by mentioning a threat. "Every time we have tried to talk about the injustices and inconsistencies of the commission, they scream b**** threat. All I can say is that this b**** threat argument is suspect."
When the STAR contacted the Broadcasting Commission yesterday, Nicole Morrison, information and public relations officer said: "With reference to the b**** threat, the Commission has not been advised by the police of any new development."

Fantasia Barrino is losing her million dollar home while this article is being written up about her, and reports are saying she is in denial:
CHARLOTTE, NC - Fantasia Barrino - who faces the loss of her $1.3 million home here in a debtors auction set for noon Monday - is apparently ignoring the looming legal threat, officials told The Post yesterday. The inspirational American Idol winner owes a Florida credit company $65,000 - money she borrowed in 2006 to pay back taxes she owed the IRS. The singer made a $10,000 payment in August 2007. But she never paid the rest, so the company won the right in court last month to auction off her house for the balance. Mecklenburg County sheriffs deputies, who are responsible for enforcing civil court orders, have tried at least a dozen times to reach Barrino at the home and by phone, said Sgt. J.W. England, a supervisor of civil judgments. A deputy spoke a couple of times to Barrinos mother, but never reached the star, who appears to be ignoring attempts to save her house, officials said. We try very hard and give the defendant every opportunity to pay, England said yesterday. Over the course of about a year, Barrino has never responded to court documents, and no lawyer ever appeared in court to represent her, said Larry Goldman, a Charlotte attorney representing the credit company, Broward Energy Management. I certainly dont want anyone to lose their house, Goldman said. But as far as Im concerned, we have a judgment. Barrino, 24, has made no payments and filed no documents since The Post reported a court-ordered lien on the property in Charlottes upscale Piper Glen neighborhood last month. Goldman said he never heard from Barrinos representatives until after the judges order. He said he has since spoken twice with reps who havent offered to resolve the debt but said theyd get back in touch before next Monday. My client has continuously asked me why they wont just pay it, Goldman said. I just dont have an answer. Barrinos attorney, Gary Greenberg declined to comment yesterday.
Its my practice not to talk about client matters, he said. Barrinos agent, Erin Culley, referred questions to the singers publicist but was unable to provide contact information for that person.
At one point he loved her so much he gave her his kidney - now a sensational divorce has goaded him into demanding it back.
A New York doctor has taken his estranged wife to court to theoretically demand she give him his kidney back - or pay him $1.5million in compensation.
Dr Richard Batista - a prominent Long Island vascular surgeon, Cornell graduate, and father of three - gave his wife his kidney when she suffered renal failure in 2001 in a desperate bid to save her life - and, ironically, their marriage.
But, though Dawnell Batista lived, the marriage gamble failed.
Now she has filed for divorce and he has accused her of having an affair.
'There is no deeper pain you can ever express than betrayal from someone who you loved and devoted your whole life to,' Dr Batista, 49, told local media.
The pair met two decades ago while he was a resident and she a training nurse.
They fell in love and married in 1990, and had three daughters. But the marriage slowly began to fall apart.
Even so, in 2001, when Mrs Batista, a nurse, had gone into renal failure, her husband did not think twice.
'She was my wife. My priority was to save her life, save her life and future of our children and hopefully with that in mind keep the marriage alive,' he said.
'When I donated the next day on my feet going down hallway to visit her in adjoining room, there was no greater feeling on this planet,' he told CBS.
'As God is my witness, I felt I could put my arm around Jesus Christ. [It was] unbelievable. I was walking on a cloud. I did the right thing for her to this day. I could still do it again.'
Then, Mrs Batista filed for divorce in 2005. Now Dr Batista is accusing her of having an affair and throwing him out of their million-dollar Massapequa home.
He claimed he was suing for the kidney because his wife is now denying him contact with their three children, ages 8, 11 and 14.
'I saved her life,' he told reporters. 'This divorce is killing me.'
So far Mrs Batista has not publicly commented.
Doctors told CBS that an operation to return the kidney was not only unethical but nearly impossible.
Traffic reportedly slowed to a crawl in the Lewis Street area of Savanna-La-Mar, Westmoreland, recently, after a teenage girl, said to have been demon- possessed, was rushed to the St Joseph's Catholic Church for deliverance.
THE STAR was informed that the youngster, who lives close to the church, was taken there by her mother and neighbours after they noticed things, extremely out of the ordinary, happening to her.
One neighbour with whom THE STAR spoke told the newspaper that the episode began in the morning when she heard the young girl screaming.
"I saw her with her hands stretched out and legs crossed, just like how Jesus was on the cross. Her feet were not touching the ground," Cambodiana* said. "She was being pulled by something. I didn't see anything pulling her literally, but you could tell she was being dragged because she was moving in the air."
House shattered
Cambodiana said the child's mother ran out and tried to hold on to her but the unseen force was still pulling her. She said that neighbours intervened after the girl's mother raised an alarm. "After her mother started calling for help about eight persons ran over there and held on to the girl but she was still being pulled," the neighbour said. "But, after a while she was released and her mother and the others took her back inside the house."
The alleged eyewitness added that after the girl was taken inside the house, the windows in the house shattered. It was at this point that the people attempted to get her in a car to take her to the church. "Even when they were trying to put her in the car the thing came back and was trying to pull her away again," she said. "To be honest, I was very afraid because I have never seen anything like that and I never believed in demons but this changed my view. At one point I even saw *lo** coming out of her nose, it was scary."
Various forces
When THE STAR contacted the St Joseph's Catholic Church, the pastor, giving his name only as Father Ken, confirmed that a young girl, about 17 years old, was taken to him. After being asked if the youngster was demon- possessed, he said: "I didn't see her being pulled (but) she was being worked up by various forces, within and without."
Father Ken added: "She was sticking out her tongue and so forth but I put my hands on her and she calmed down after about an hour." The pastor said the child was taken away in a car shortly afterwards and the huge crowd that had gathered outside the church slowly dispersed.
Neither the child nor her mother has been seen in the area since the incident, Cambodiana told The Star.
Vybz Kartel was born at Kingston's Victoria Jubilee Hospital.
Originally from Waterhouse, Kingston, he was raised in the Waterford
community of Portmore, St.Catherine. Adidja attended Calabar High
School in Kingston but was expelled as a teenager. Determined to
continue his education, he completed his studies at a tutorial
technical school. The young Adidja was exposed to a wide variety of
music from a tender age by two uncles who happened to be aspiring
musicians themselves. Every weekend he would be treated to new musical
offerings on his uncle's old component set, ranging from Sam Cooke to
country and western ballads to Ninja Man, who became one of his musical
foes. At the age of 10 his favourites included artists as diverse as
Papa San, Charlie Chaplin, Will Smith and KRS-1, all of whose lyrics he
would write down and study word-for-word, performing them later for the
entertainment of friends. Deciding he wanted to be a deejay, he began
writing his own lyrics at the age of 11.
Adidja and his friends Arif, Boyie, and Saif, often frequented the
weekly Gong Talent Show at the now defunct Coney Amusement Park on the
outskirts of Kingston, but to their chagrin were always gonged off
whenever they got a chance to perform. Undeterred by his weekly failure
to impress the talent show audience, Adidja decided to hone his skills
and concentrate on winning over his own community of Waterford until he
was ready for bigger things. With that goal in mind, on weekends he
would practise his art on neighbourhood sound systems Soul Signal and
Electric Force. In 1993, the young Adidja, now in his early teens,
recorded his first single Love Fat Woman for Alvin Reid's One Heart
Label under the name Adi Banton, a name he chose in tribute to Buju
Banton, another of his role models. He recorded several more tracks for
local producers, perfecting his craft until 1996, when he and two
friends, Mr Lee and a singer called Escobar, decided to form a group.
One night, after watching a movie about Pablo Escobar and his infamous
cartel, Adidja came up with a name for his trio: Vybz Kartel.
Vybz Kartel's new role as Killer's protege (a spot once held by
prodigal prodigy Baby Cham) caught the attention of the public and led
to a career rise, first as a ghost-writer for Bounty, Elephant Man and
other members of the Scare Dem Crew, followed by collaborations with
Bounty Killer such as Gal Clown and Girls Like Mine (Liquid Riddim),
then finally coming into his own with early hits such as Gun Clown,
Guns Like Mine (Trafalga Riddim), Badman (Panty Raid Riddim), Bus Mi
Gun Like Nuttn, Most High (Mexican Riddim) and War Organizer (Clappas
Riddim). He also had a string of successful collaborations with Wayne
Marshall, such as New Millennium (Mad Antz Riddim), Why (Krazy Riddim)
and Why Again (Good To Go Riddim). This led to Vybz Kartel being
crowned Deejay of the Year at Stone Love's 30th Anniversary, 2002.
From the outset, Vybz Kartel was more of a 'badman' deejay than a
pop artist. In his early career he mostly concentrated on
unapologetically hardcore, undiluted songs extolling the virtues of
guns, sex and ganja, but his biggest hit was yet to come. He had
success with more mainstream, club-oriented singles such as Big Man
(Engine Riddim), P**y Jaw (Mad Antz Riddim), Sweet to the Belly
(Egyptian Riddim) and Bruk Buddy (G-String Riddim), but in late 2003
his single Tekk Buddy on the Thunder Clap Riddim proved to be the one
which catapulted his career into the stratosphere. The single stayed on
the charts for months and spent weeks at the number 1 position, and
finally brought Vybz Kartel to the attention of those who hadn't yet
become aware of him.
In late 2006, Vybz Kartel reportedly changed his stage name to "Addi
di Teacha". Fans still generally refer to him as Vybz Kartel.
Deejay Macka Diamond is set to star in an upcoming action film.
The deejay turned author is now turning her talents to acting and, according to her, will perform extravagant 'matrix-like' action stunts in the film Paradise Redemption.
The call from a film director from England is one that opened new avenues for the popular female deejay.
The film, according to Macka Diamond, is about "a middle-age woman like myself who has a grown daughter who's in the garrison. She has a boyfriend who got killed and the daughter gets involved and gets killed as well, so I go out and get revenge".
a huge role
Filming for Paradise Redemption begins in Antigua on January 17. This is not Macka's first acting gig, having guest starred on the silver screen in the popular Jamaican soap opera Royal Palm Estate.
While Macka has acted before, when she spoke to the STAR she admitted to being a little nervous to tackle such a huge role.
"When they first approached me I was all excited, now when I look is 120 pages (the script), I'm suppose to be studying, so I'm kinda like wow, me a wonder if I can do it. I think I can do it. They all gonna have me doing little stunts, matrix stuff, mi a go ride bike, it's gonna be crazy," Macka said.
champagne-splashing
Having done a lot of drama in school and being considered a very 'dramatic person' is also giving the deejay an added boost of confidence to take on the lead role that could lead to her starring in other movies.
She explained: "You see how they have all those African movies? So the director wants to create a series of Caribbean movies, so this (Paradise Redemption) is gonna be the start of them. My male co-star is suppose to be some big African star as well."
Before heading off to Antigua, Macka Diamond will be celebrating her birthday tonight with a champagne-splashing soirée at the El Rancho Lawn in Dunbeholden, Portmore.
She told the STAR: "This year, the birthday party is gonna be to just have fun, to prepare myself for this movie trip and to party."
The artiste has also been busy in the studio recording a number of songs before she leaves for the film.
'When they first approached me I was all excited, now when I look is 120 pages (the script) I'm suppose to be studying, so I'm kinda like wow, me a wonder if I can do it.'Di Genius', super producer Stephen McGregor celebrated his 19th birthday in a star-studded get-together at the Big Ship studios in Havendale on Tuesday.
There were tons of 'big ups to Stephen' throughout the night from the entertainers and friends who showed up.
The McGregor family was also present, with father Freddie, sister Shema and brother Chino on hand to ensure the event ran smoothly. Stephen also made the rounds, laughing with friends and having a 'mad' time.
Nicco Bam Bam, among other selectors, kept the vibe going well into 2 a.m., as the STAR spotted entertainers such as Mavado, Bounty Killer, Aidonia, Tifa, Timberlee, Natalie Storm, Gyptian, Kiprich, Raine Seville, Leftside, Spragga Benz, Shane O, Laden, Farenheit, Tony Matterhorn and others. Personalities such as Nikki Z and Milk were also present and fellow producers Russian and Equiknoxx also came out to wish Stephen a happy 19th.

The Head of the of Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI), Assistant Commissioner Granville Gause, yesterday confirmed that he has made arrangements to interview the three policemen assigned to Member of Parliament James Robertson, as the probe deepens into an incident that followed a controversial shooting on Saturday.
In the meantime, a sub-officer who is investigating allegations against Robertson in the matter has written to Assistant Commissioner Les Green, requesting that he submits a statement, based on a conversation that Green had with the member of parliament on the day of the shooting.
"I am also making arrangements to interview Mr Robertson one day next week," said ACP Gause.
The BSI chief further disclosed that at least six firearms from the St Thomas Police Division have been sent to the Government's Forensic Laboratory for testing.
Contacted yesterday, ACP Green refused to comment on the request to provide a statement in relation to the matter, but sought to assure that the investigation will be full and thorough.
In the meantime, several residents of Norris yesterday voiced their support for the West St Thomas MP before travelling to the BSI to give statements on the events which transpired on Saturday.
Eyewitness claims
Other persons expressed anger at the allegations that Robertson used abusive language to the police.
"Him never disrespect them and them never disrespect him," one woman who claimed to have witnessed the incident told The Gleaner.
That is a claim endorsed by Robertson, who says he travelled from the Corporate Area to Norris after getting reports that the police were trying to kill a constituent named Rameish Simpson, who had already reported that his life was being threatened.
According to Robertson, he had informed senior members of the police force that he was going to Norris, where the shooting occurred.
Simpson was taken to the hospital by Robertson. He's used to saying "Show me your boobs" -- but now Joe Francis is saying "Show me the money."
We got Joe Francis today and asked about that $5 billion bailout he and Larry Flynt want for the porn industry from the Government -- and the "Girls Gone Wild" founder says he's personally driving his Prius to DC for the cold, hard cash.
The youngest mother on record was a five-year-old Peruvian girl.
Perhaps the most discomfiting record of this nature involves the youngest person ever to give birth, reputedly a five-year-old girl ? not only because such a record posits that a child barely of kindergarten age (presumably involuntarily) underwent an experience we associate with physical and psychological maturity, but also because it implies the commission of an act now considered to be nothing less than child molestation. Regardless of our squeamishness, we have to note that the claim of a five-year-old girl giving birth is apparently true.
Her name was Lina Medina, a Peruvian girl from the Andean village of Ticrapo who made medical history when she gave birth to a boy by caesarean section in May 1939 at the age of five years, seven months and 21 days. Lina's parents initially thought their daughter had a large abdominal tumor, but after they took her to a hospital in the town of Pisco physicians confirmed that her abdominal swelling was due to pregnancy. Lina was eventually transferred to a hospital in Lima, where she delivered a six-pound baby boy by Cesarean section on 14 May 1939 (coincidentally the date on which Mother's Day was celebrated that year). Lina's father was temporarily jailed on suspicion of incest, but he was released for a lack of evidence and authorities were never able to determine who fathered Lina's child. Lina's incredible story was documented in contemporaneous reports by Edmundo Escomel , one of Peru's preeminent physician-researchers of the period and a laureate of the prestigious FrenchAcademy of Sciences.
MOGADISHU, Somalia Five of the pirates who hijacked a Saudi supertanker drowned with their share of a $3 million ransom, a relative said Saturday, the day after the bundle of cash was apparently dropped by parachute onto the deck of the ship.
The Sirius Star and its 25 crew sailed safely away Friday at the end of a two-month standoff in the Gulf of Aden, where pirates attacked over 100 ships last year. Hundreds more kidnapped sailors remain in the hands of pirates.
The drowned pirates' boat overturned in rough seas, and family members were still looking for four missing bodies, said Daud Nure, another pirate who knew the men involved.
Piracy is one of the few ways to make money in Somalia. Half the population is dependent on aid and a whole generation has grown up knowing nothing but war. A recent report by London's Chatham House think-tank said pirates raked in more than $30 million in ransoms last year.
Somalia's lawless coastline borders one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, which links the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. Attacks have continued despite the patrols by warships from France, Germany, Britain, America, India and China.
The naval coalition has been closely monitoring both the Sirius Star and the Faina, a Ukrainian ship loaded with military tanks that has been held since September. The seizure of the Sirius Star on Nov. 15 prompted fears that the pirates might release some of the cargo of crude oil into the ocean, causing an environmental disaster as a way of pressuring negotiators. At the time, the oil was valued at $100 million.
Abukar Haji, uncle of one of the dead pirates, blamed the naval surveillance for the accident that killed his pirate nephew Saturday.
"The boat the pirates were traveling in capsized because it was running at high speed because the pirates were afraid of an attack from the warships patrolling around," he said.
"There has been human and monetary loss but what makes us feel sad is that we don't still have the dead bodies of our relatives. Four are still missing and one washed up on the shore."
Pirate Daud Nure said three of the eight passengers had managed to swim to shore after the boat overturned in rough seas. He was not part of the pirate operation but knew those involved.
"Here in Haradhere the news is grim, relatives are looking for their dead," he said.
The tanker had left Somali territorial waters and was on its way home Saturday, said Saudi Arabian oil minister Ali Naimi. A Saudi Oil Ministry official said the ship was headed for Dammam, on the country's Gulf coast, but gave no estimated time of arrival. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.
The U.S. Navy, which announced this week it will head a new anti-piracy task force, released photos Friday showing a parachute, carrying what was described as "an apparent payment," floating down toward the tanker.
The Liberian-flagged ship is owned by Vela International Marine Ltd., a subsidiary of Saudi oil company Aramco. Neither commented on the reported ransom drop.
"All the crew members are safe and I am glad to say that they are all in good health and high spirits," said a statement by Saleh K'aki, president and CEO of Vela. "Throughout this ordeal, our sole objective was the safe and timely release of the crew. That has been achieved today."
But over a dozen ships and around 300 crew members are still being held. The capture of the Sirius Star has already demonstrated the pirates' ability to strike high value targets hundreds of miles offshore.
On the same day the Saudi ship was freed, pirates released a captured Iranian-chartered cargo ship, Iran's state television reported Saturday. The ship Delight was carrying 36 tons of wheat when it was attacked in the Gulf of Aden Nov. 18 and seized by pirates. All 25 crew are in good health and the vessel is sailing toward Iran, the TV report said. It did not say if a ransom was paid.

Naveen Andrews has just left family court with his son, and the baby mama is sitting on the courthouse steps bawling.
The "Lost" star and Elena Eustache, the mother of three-year-old Naveen Joshua, were in L.A. County Superior Court, where a judge changed the custody order after Elena allegedly took the boy out of L.A. County without permission. Naveen also claimed Elena kept the boy from him.
The parents had joint custody, but today, with the help of disso-queen Laura Wasser, the order was modified so Naveen now has sole physical and legal custody pending a full hearing next month.
We're told Elena has alleged Naveen's girlfriend, Barbara Hershey, practices witchcraft and that Naveen and Hershey have poisoned the boy. In response, Wasser asked the judge to order Elena to undergo psychiatric testing.
Elena brought the boy to court. After the ruling, the bailiff took the boy from Elena and gave him to Naveen, who left the courthouse with Hershey.
Under the new order, the boy is allowed to travel to Hawaii where Naveen films "Lost". He can be accompanied either by Naveen or Hershey.
After the hearing, Elena told TMZ, "I can't believe celebrities and their money. They always get what they want."
The pic above shows the boy, Naveen, Laura Wasser and Barbara Hershey leaving court.
A scoutmaster accused of molesting a 12-year-old boy scout at a camp was granted $50,000 bail with surety when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Kevin Pinnock, who is facing a charge of indecent assault, was also ordered to return to court on January 15 by Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown.
Allegations are that Pinnock, who was an elder at the camp, took the complainant into a room. It is alleged that the boy's pants was pulled down and his penis fondled.
A report was made to the police and Pinnock was arrested and charged. The rapper called into The Aphilliates show as DJ Drama was interviewing producer/rapper/actor David Banner.
Lil Wayne responded to the comments he made in a recent interview with mixtape publication The Foundation Magazine.
I am against it. I am anti-mixtape, Lil Wayne told The Foundation Magazine. I dont know no mixtape DJs. If youre a mixtape DJ, f**k ya. I am pissed off at the mixtape game. They suckin my d**k but wont let me cum.
Last night the rapper apologized to DJs worldwide and told DJ Drama that he did not mean to make a blanket statement that included all DJs.
He did however, take the makers of the Waynes World series of mixtapes to task.
I didnt mean to disrespect no DJ, no mixtape DJ, it was never no disrespect," Lil Wayne clarified before shouting out Core DJ coalition Founder Tony Neal. "Given the fact that me and Drama, me and Khaled and me and my homie Raj Smoov from New Orleans, we all get it in and do the mixtape thing. Things are blown out of proportion.
The rappers apologetic tone then turned into anger, as he explained the events that precipitated his controversial comments to The Foundation Magazine.
What I do wanna say is who ever got soft spirit or whoever took what I said what ever way that wanted to take it and feel some kind of way, I want you to know, please do not feel differently after you hear me on this radio, Lil Wayne told DJ Drama. I want you to still feel f**k me, I want you to still feel f**k that n***a, cause when you see me in the streets thats what I want it to be and I'ma bite your f**king face off.
He then called out the creators of the Waynes World mixtape series, which are being produced by DJ Keyz and DJ Pratt, of Worldwide Legacy.
While Lil Wayne called out a DJ Empire or them Empire n***as, it appears he was referring to Worldwide Legacys brand of mixtapes.
There is a series of Lil Wayne mixtapes produced by The Empire, however, that run is titled The Drought is Over, which itself is a four-part mix of Lil Waynes music.
I f**ks with every DJ I f**ks with. But this Empire n***a, I dont f**k with him. For all DJs just letting you know All that shit was meant to that Empire n***a. I dont f**k with them Empire n***as. The n***a put out a CD on me every month and I couldnt tell you how none of them n***as look in person.
The rapper then explained that purchased a copy of Waynes World Volume 7 and took offense to the mixtapes contents.
These n***as was on volume seven. Plus you gotta understand when I put the disc in, these n***as on there talking like yo n***a this our seventh time around whats good and these n***as hating on us. If you made the Waynes World Volume 1-7 your mama's a b**ch. And if you the Empire n***a, I hope you die twice tomorrow. But every other DJ I f**k with you and I wouldnt be shit without to tell the truth.
Lil Waynes highly anticipated album Tha Carter III is due in stores June 10.
