The shoe sculpture went on display in Tikrit
The director of an orphanage in Iraq said the shoe sculpture set up to honour the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at former US President George W Bush has been removed.

Fatin al-Nassiri said Iraqi police told her the statue had to be removed because government property should not be used for something with a political bias.
A sofa-sized shoe statue was formally unveiled to the public on Thursday in the hometown of the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Baghdad-based artist Laith al-Amari described his fiberglass-and-copper work in Tikrit as a homage to the pride of the Iraqi people.

MTV JAMS is a digital cable channel with an audience of over 18 million households including major urban markets such as Atlanta, Washington D.C, Los Angeles, Miami, sections of New Jersey and New York (Long Island, Queens), New Orleans and several other.

The digital network is a key channel to reach the passionate core music audience, industry execs and progressive hip hop fans.

On Monday the video surrounded by a media frenzy was not premiered on BET's 106 and Park as promised but nonetheless the soft launch via the internet was enough to create a stir. Since then Mavado's management has released a statement addressing the issue.

Mavado now the father of a bouncing baby boy named 'David Brooks Jr' is slated to release his upcoming album entitled 'Mr. Brooks - A Better Tomorrow' on March 4th 2009.

Road sign hack -- z****ie alert!

Drivers in Austin, Texas were recently given a dire warning. "CAUTION! Z****IES! AHEAD!!!" read a sign apparently targeted by hackers.

The sign also flashed "RUN FOR COLD CLIMATES" and "THE END IS NEAR!!!!!" A different sign elsewhere in the city read "NAZI Z****IES! RUN!!!"

It's unclear who left the messages -- although we think we know where they learned how to do it. Still we'd advise Texas residents to proceed cautiously. A traffic jam will slow your commute. Z****ies will eat your brain.

5-LEGGED INSECT IN MACKEREL MEAL

January 29, 2009
Started By Teacha28 Comments

Sandreisha Milky* says she found more than just mackerel in the meal she was preparing for her children recently. In addition to the fish, she found a tiny organism with about five small legs, which is now being examined by the company that distributes it.

According to Milky, she was preparing a tin of Lasco jack mackerel for her children two weeks ago, when she made the discovery. "I have my seasonings in the pot and everything and I put the mackerel in the pot and start to stir it up," she said.

She said while stirring the contents, she found the thing on a spoon. "When mi look, mi see this ting on the fork. The back look like shrimps and when mi turn it over mi see it have some little foot, about four to five feet," she said.

Apologised

Milky said the following day, January 15, she tried to contact the company but it took some time before she was finally able to make a complaint. Following that, she said she also called the Bureau of Standards and the following day she received a call from a Lasco representative, who apologised and told her that she would be given a gift basket and that the mackerel would be replaced as compensation.

Milky was, however, upset about the time it took the company to handle the matter. "Because we are poor people they don't have to deal with it like this. Me nah really ask fi nutten, mi call them and they don't even come,

Now investigating

Company representatives went to Milky's home in St Catherine that same day and collected the sample and are now investigating. In a release responding to queries , Lasco said, "We at Lasco place a high priority on quality, so we responded quickly to this complaint. We collected the item from the customer on January 19, 2009, and we passed it to our Quality Control Division, which has since commenced its investigations."

The company added that it has assured Milky that as soon as the Quality Control Division completes its investigation, she will be told of the findings. The company said they have also compensated her. "We had also offered the customer a replacement and a gift of groceries, which she accepted. Lasco remains committed to rigorous quality control measures and compliance to high quality standards," the release said.

Milky confirmed that she has accepted the basket and said she is awaiting the conclusion of the matter.

Don Mafia might be caught in the lyrical feud between Kiprich and Monster Empire

Krista Henry, Staff Reporter

Deejay and songwriter Don Mafia might be caught in the lyrical feud between Kiprich and Monster Empire.

The war might soon include a third party, as Don Mafia claims General B from the Monster Empire is calling him a traitor.

When the STAR spoke with Don Mafia yesterday he explained that he has been drawn into clashes since Sting because of his song-writing skills. The first incident, he said, took place after Sting, at Uptown Mondays, when the deejay had his four tyres slashed by persons who believed he wrote lyrics for Merciless for his clash.

seh me a traitor

"I am an artiste and I'm not writing lyrics for anyone, even though everyone thinks so. Dem see me and Merciless a par at Sting and think seh me a write for Merciless and go slash my tyres. Den, last week, I was by a bar and was talking to General B, who is someone I've been friends with for the past few years," Don Mafia said.

"Kiprich came by, so mi go hail him cause is someone I know for years from Waterhouse days. When I go and hail Kiprich I never know it would be a problem. I thought the war was lyrical and not personal, cause I not taking sides I don't fight 'gainst no one and every artiste is a friend. Now, General B a seh pure negative tings bout me, seh mi disrespect him, seh me a traitor."

Don Mafia told the STAR that General B has taken the incident out of proportion, accusing him of writing clash lyrics for Kiprich in preparation for the clash at Follow Di Arrow, to be held at James Bond Beach in February.

bad mind

When asked if General B had approached him about writing lyrics for Follow Di Arrow, Don Mafia said, "General B waan mi come choose sides and help him fight 'gainst Kiprich. He was asking me for lyrics but I wasn't planning on doing it... Some people want me help dem write lyrics but I'm not a helper in the business. all these years, me a write for people and dem reach di top and bad mind me and disrespect me when dem reach. dem artistes nuh clean-hearted."

For Don Mafia, it's all about his career as a deejay and he doesn't need Kiprich to clash the Monster Empire. if he wanted to, he could spit lyrics at the Monster Empire on his own. He also elaborated that if any artiste calls his name in a song, he is more than willing to retaliate lyrically.

Don Mafia has two songs out, Hungry, a collaboration with Macka Diamond and Mad Money.

When the STAR spoke to General B of the Monster Empire he claimed that he and Don Mafia had talked about the incident involving Kiprich and that the issues were resolved. He also denied asking Don Mafia to write clash lyrics for the Monster Empire.

DanceHall Websites at War? Fighting over what...

Someone just forward to me ... some rae rae that a gwaan between two internet websites. When I first heard them say Jamaicalive I said ok it must have something to do with the incident between the Jamaicalive crew and the Portmore Empire Thugs (aka Gaza Thugs). It has been alleged by the Jamaicalive team in a raging fire complaint by the Host Summer (which they take out of the website archive) who was said to be threatened by the Gaza Thugs, due to some alliance affiliation... and had to flee the seen leaving a planned interview with the thugs aborted and in disarray. Persons who had paid to watch the interview had to be told that they are going to be refunded...
A couple of hours later I get to understand that another website would be doing the interview along the Gaza strip with the Gaza thugs... so mi a seh the rae rae is perhaps between that site and Jamaicalive/yourradio105.. NOPE.. it aint so, this is a totally different thing all together.
From the sketchy details I got.. the website yourradio105.com is now playing a voice message from a phone call .. allegedly from personnel from the JamaicaLive camp threatening the lives (the same thing they said kartel did to them otherday) of personnel from another website called worldflavas.com.. saying that worldflavas a try eat them food, thief their viewers, mimic them site i.e. they are also running live feeds on Ustream that maybe considered to be in competition with them...so Jamaicalive vex bout it and all these reason to get angry things.. so worldflavas took back them website youradio105.com from Jamaicalive (apparently they own it), after the threatening phone call incident.
The website personnel seem to go way back and have been working together for some time.. and it seems have really broken down.. just true money ..in my opinion.

Cant we all just get along... a mean.. nuff website take my story dem and use it..and mi nuh say rae... we know say nuff websites copy from one another and a gwaan like dem nuh want nobody take anything from their site... unnuh just keep doing what you doing and just nice un the pace.. for readers and viewers.. dont bother with the nasty slugging.

Vivian Blake back in Jamaica

VIVIAN BLAKE, reputed leader of the notorious Shower Posse gang, returned to Jamaica yesterday. The 53-year-old Blake arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport about 12:20 p.m. after being deported from the United States.

Blake was sentenced to 28 years in Federal prison in June 2000 in a Miami Federal Court. He had been indicted there 12 years earlier but American authorities said he fled to Jamaica, by boarding a cruise ship in Miami, where he remained free until his arrest in 1994.

Dressed in a black suit and a white shirt, Blake was transported from the airport to the CIB headquarters, downtown Kingston, where he was processed and released.

Blake told reporters that he felt "great" being back home.

"At least I come to see my family," he told The Gleaner/Power 106 News.

He said the first thing that he will do is to go and visit his daughter.

"I am going to see my daughter Dominique, I waan kiss her," he said.

Asked if he had any regrets, Blake replied, "about what?".

Tinted vehicle

Blake was whisked away in a tinted vehicle, driven by his attorney George Soutar.

More than 30 persons who supported Blake converged outside the CIB headquarters and when the vehicle that was transporting him drove out, they shouted his name.

One woman who walked behind the vehicle as it drove along East Queen Street yelled "Vivian Mi fren".

He and other members of the Shower Posse were given lengthy sentences based on 52 charges brought by Federal prosecutors. These included racketeering, smuggling and distributing marijuana and cocaine from the Bahamas through the United States.

The Shower Posse, which was strong supporter of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), was also implicated in over 1,000 murders in the US. The 'Feds' said the Posse members operated lucrative illegal drug rings in Miami, New York City, Philadelphia and Virginia.

Football scholarship

Blake was raised in West Kingston, a constituency that has backed the JLP in general elections since the 1960s. He attended St George's College where he passed three GCE subjects, but went to the US in 1972 on a football scholarship.

He was one of the Shower Posse's founders, reportedly ruling it with an iron hand. They were regarded as one of America's most dangerous gangs during the 1980s when the narcotics trade was booming in that country's urban centres.

The Shower Posse's rise and fall is chronicled in The Shower Posse: The Most Notorious Jamaican Crime Organisation, a 2003 book written by Blake's son Duane.

The gang's story was also told on Black Entertainment Television's critically acclaimed documentary series, American Gangster, last year.

TOUGH-talking young men who have turned the once peaceful rural settlement of Canaan Heights, Clarendon, into an almost raging war zone, now say they are willing to call a truce following the intervention of the National Transformation Programme (NTP).

During a recent visit to the community with members of the Pastor Al Miller-led NTP and the Peace Management Initiative (PMI), the men from either side of the divide - who have been warring for the past two years - expressed their willingness to attend an arranged peace meeting.

However, despite their longing for a truce, the men said it will take more than a peace meeting to rebuild the trust for each other again given the emotional wounds are still fresh in the minds of those who have lost loved one and friends to this violence.

For the last two years, the community has been drenched with the *lo** of the very old and even a child as young men who grew up playing marbles along the dusty rural tracks suddenly became each others' worst enemies.
The older persons, some of whom have lived in the area for more than 20 years, said it is still not clear what started the war.

One resident believed it began when a man was murdered at the community centre about two years ago.
The resident claimed that men who "badmind" him for what he had killed him. "Fi dat ah whole heap ah man dead," explained one man.

Since then the youths of an area - unofficially named Big Lane, and its counterpart, Love Lane, have been trading bullets not only at each other, but anyone deemed to have any association with either areas or certain individuals.

No one knows the pains of the past two years than a 58-year-old woman whose two sons were shot and killed in one year while she, her other son and a small granddaughter almost lost their own lives after being shot and seriously injured.
The woman, who has been living in Canaan Heights since 1982, says she has no idea what caused the problems.
What she knows is that she is fearful in her home and is ever on the lookout.

"At nights me and me daughters take turn sleeping as we are always on the lookout," she said.

The guns have been silent for sometime now, but the tension is very much alive as residents from one area of the community cannot go to another, trapping many in their homes.

Not even a friendly football competition can get the men of Love Lane to venture to the community centre as they say they do not trust those from Big Lane.

"The violence can start back up at anytime and when it heat up it bad because soldiers and police deh right yah so and yet dem shoot man round deh so and run go bout them business," one said, pointing to the vast stretch of woody terrain.

A resident of Love Lane who is related to someone who was shot and injured accused the Big Lane youths of being the instigators.

"No man round yah nah push no war but we ah defend weself," he said.

Despite this feeling of doom, most of the men who spoke with the team said they would welcome any intervention for peace. They are, however, adamant that until they are sure that a real truce is reached they would not be venturing to that side of the community.

However, a group of young men who were seen hanging out at a house in Big Lane and playing board games in the middle of the work day, were quite verbal also in their accusations, as they claimed the men from Love Lane are the instigators.

One young man who assumed a hard exterior said Love Lane youths cannot be trusted. According to him, a football competition intended to bring unity back to the community was not attended by any of them which he believes is a clear indication they are not desirous of peace.

When it was suggested to them that the Love Lane men shied away from the football game because of fear for their lives, the man who was visibly angry said this is not true.

"How dem fi fearful and when women and children come here we nuh do dem nutten? Yet if a woman from over yah go over de dem kill her? All in a church dem go and kill people," he said, referring to the murder of a woman who was killed as she left church one night.

When told by Miller that forgiveness would have to be the order of the day if peace is to reign in that community, one man said they have been doing that for sometime now.

The results are in and according to the public, Kartel was the 'last man standing' at Sting '08, held at Jamworld, Portmore, St Catherine.

Last Friday THE STAR asked the public to vote for the winner of the clash held on December 26 by texting the name of who they believed won to the number provided.

Kartel won the vote-off after he got more than 65 per cent of the votes from the respondents.

When THE STAR called Kartel yesterday for a response to his victory in the poll, he quickly pointed out that he was not surprised.

"No I'm not. I knew the outcome from the 'Barber' (Mavado) broke (Usain) Bolt's record," he said.

There was some controversy following the clash with fans of both artistes claiming victory. Mavado also told THE STAR that he was the winner and the 'baddest' deejay in Jamaica while Kartel insisted that he (Mavado) ran out of lyrics and ran from the stage so could not have been the winner.

In an article published in THE STAR on December 29, persons in entertainment circles were also split on who won. A statement from Supreme Promotions (promoters of Sting), said the clash was even. "The clash was too close to call. It was evenly poised," Isaiah Laing, head of Supreme Promotions said.

In yesterday's interview Kartel said the answer was clear immediately after the clash.

Reports however were that the clash had appeared to be in Kartel's favour until he deejayed about Mavado's mother, which did not go down well with the Sting crowd. Some persons began to boo him and Mavado capitalised on this and did a swift counteraction before leaving the stage.

Efforts by THE STAR to reach Mavado for a comment yesterday proved futile.

Mavado 'runs' from Sting clash

December 27, 2008
Started By serjizzle81 Comments

Vybz Kartel showed his true mettle and bravado by clashing Mavado on the singjay's own Anger Management band at 'Sting 2008: The Settlement of All Arguments', and emerged as the competitor who got the most forwards during their verbal exchanges.

The consensus of the streets is that Mavado ran from the stage after earning a forward, in order to give the impression that he was leading. Others believe he was forced to make a tactical retreat at a critical time in the clash when he grabbed the momentum back from Kartel, However, most patrons in the rabid Sting audience were amazed and disgusted by this move. The singjay's drummer also left the stage not allowing Kartel to respond to Mavado's big forward for Shotter No Miss. Then Mavado ran back onstage and declared 'mi neva run, mi did gone reload' and he got a few cheers.

Before that, Mavado had been doing well, before inexplicably becoming flustered and accusing his own band of 'sabotage'. DJ Einstein even ran out and gestured to the band to stop playing Mavado so loudly as to drown out his words. And there was a moment for about five to 12 seconds when he couldn't seem to find a song and was relentlessly booed by the audience.

Kartel, smelling *lo**, quipped: 'mi no hear nothing weh yu say' before deejaying a new lyric with the punchline 'see the step out yah'.

He then reminded Mavado that 'see, a boo dem a boo you'. He responded with Full Clip and got an immediate forward. Kartel sent for a black casket with the words RIP Alliance written on it. Mavado petulantly removed it from the stage, only to have Kartel place it directly behind him while he was singing. At this point it seemed that Kartel was toying with him, setting him up for the eventual kill. Mavado fought back valiantly deejaying a lyric which suggested that Kartel was earting Spice, to which Kartel responded: mi no nyam Spice, but mi f--k yu gal ah bus back'. And the crowd roared its approval.

However, Kartel made a critical error when he was booed after deejaying Wah Dat Fah?. The crowd obviously did not like the references and Mavado took the opportunity to regain lost ground. They exchanged tune for tune and Mavado also dipped below the belt deejaying that Kartel freak/him watch him wadda when she a pee pee. He got some cheers mixed with boos for his effort. Kartel tried to seize back the momentum with a line that suggested that Mavado's child was the 'soldier pickney' but the crowd was not entirely convinced either. It was shortly after this that Mavado did Shotter No Miss and ran off the stage, sapping the energy in the venue and confusing even his diehard fans. After his return, the two rivals exchanged songs but none gained the upperhand, especially with Mavado trying to sing while Kartel was deejaying and interrupting him frequently. At one point, Kartel asked: yu nuh waan mi deejay, and Mavado replied incredibly 'no!'. Finally, Kartel left the stage and Mavado was carried to his bus on the shoulders of his fans. It is not clear if this was a victory parade or if Mavado had become overwhelmed by the moment and had to be carried off the battlefield wounded by still breathing.

Later, many fans expressed surprise that the singjay had ran off the stage in the heat of the battle.

"Ah my deejay still, but mi caan say him win because him run. Real bad man nuh run. Him hold him own still but mi neva like the running ting, and him look nervous, when him foot de pon the speaker box, it a shake, that is understandable still, but the running ting and him neva allow Kartel fi deejay and Kartel never interrupt him; mi never like that, it look cowardly," one dancehall fan said.

Many of Kartel's fans shouted 'Gaza!!!' Gaza!!! after the show's end and remarked that Mavado had 'polished' the street.

"Him run like Bolt. the Barber did a gwaan good until him run from the war, Gully Pad dead," one fan said.

Pro-Mavado fans maintain that their artiste won the clash.

"Him stand up to Kartel; everybody have it say Kartel woulda win, but Mavado outsmart him when him run offa the stage and tek him bands wid him," the fan said.

stop-snitching

Since the killings wont stop, the snitchin has gotta start:

The Reverend Al Sharpton will join the families of two slain teenagers during an launching a nationwide drive against the Stop Snitching culture. Rev. Sharpton, President of National Action Network, will appear with Bishop Victory Curry and Rev. Gaston Smith at Friendship MBC. Additionally, Sharpton will add to the reward fund that has been established in finding the killer of 16-year-old Brandon Mills and 18-year-old Derrick Termite Gloster.

The Stop Snitchin slogan gained popularity in 2004, when producers Rodney Bethea and Ronnie Skinny Suge Thomas released a DVD by the same title, which featured drug dealers exposing various Baltimore, Maryland informants. The DVD also helped expose corrupt police in Baltimore, Maryland, as former BPD officers William King and Antonio Murray were sentenced to 34 years in prison, stemming from drug dealing allegations on the controversial release. Thomas himself was eventually sentenced to 15 years in prison for an alleged assault drug conspiracy and extortion plot, after being arrested during a sweep of the TTP *lo**s gang.

Around 2005, the Stop Snitchin slogan logo started to appear on clothing, popularized by rap groups like The Diplomats, as a fashion trend. Group leader Camron even appeared on an infamous segment of 60 Minutes in April of 2007, where he explained his reasoning behind supporting the slogan.

The concept has hindered many criminal investigations nationwide, including the Liberty City shootings, which took place in front of several dozen people on Friday (January 23).

Police believe one or multiple gun men sprayed a crowd of up to 50 people with an AK-47 assault rifle, leaving two dead and seriously wounding seven others. We are all hurting, Glosters grandmother, Caron Dixon told The Miami Herald. We are just so tired of these guns. Most of those injured were students at Northwestern High School, where up to 20 police officers now patrol the area, for security reasons.

Hip-Hop mogul and former Liberty City resident Luther Campbell also plans to announce steps he is taking to heal the community.

The fingerprint of the man accused of murdering 64-year-old Ambassador Peter King was found on a Guinness bottle in King's bedroom.

Fingerprint expert detective sergeant Devon Harris made the disclosure Wednesday when he testified at the trial of 26-year-old Sheldon Pusey.

Pusey has been on trial in the Home Circuit Court since last week Monday.

Harris said the comparison was made from photographic enlargements of the finger impression on the Guinness bottle and Pusey's inked rolled fingerprints. He said the fingerprints of no two persons were ever proven to be the same."I fully accept your finding and I have no doubt in my mind it is correct," defence lawyer Berrie Bryan told Harris before he began to cross-examine him. Questioned as to whether he was equipped to analyse the contents in the Guinness bottle assuming that there was contaminated Guinness in it, Harris replied, "I do not deal with toxicology, sir". Harris said once a surface was smooth it could be processed for fingerprints.

Stabbed

Detective sergeant Halstead Harris testified that on May 13 last year he saw Pusey at the holding area of the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court. He said he requested a set of Pusey's fingerprints and Pusey consented. He said after the fingerprints were taken he handed over the form with the fingerprint impression to Detective sergeant Devon Harris.King was stabbed several times at his home at 11A Waterloo Road, New Kingston, between March 19 and 20, 2006.

Senior puisne judge Marva McIntosh is presiding at the trial.

Scientists at Firmenich, a company in Geneva that researches flavours and smells for the food and perfume industry, took samples of armpit sweat from 24 men and 25 women after they had spent time in a sauna or 15 minutes on an exercise bike.

When the samples were analysed, the team found those from women contained high amounts of an odourless sulphur-containing compound, according to New Scientist magazine.

When this mixed with bacteria usually found under the arm, it was transformed into a chemical called thiol, well known for its onion-like smell.

Men however sweat in a different way - scientists found high levels of an odourless fatty acid which released a cheesy smell when exposed to enzymes produced by bacteria in the armpits.

Christian Starkenmann, who led the study, said: Men smell of cheese, and women of grapefruit or onion.

A team of independent testers recruited by the scientists also found the smell from womens armpits was more unpleasant.

It is thought the study could be used to develop deodorants aimed specifically at men or women.

Not all scientists are convinced the experiment can be repeated outside Switzerland however as people have different diets and genes elsewhere in the world.

Professor Tim Jacob, who researches the science of smell at Cardiff University, said: Other factors include what you eat, what you wash with, what you wear and what genes you inherit.

Last month it was reported that a woman can subconsciously tell when a man is sexually attracted to her by the smell of his sweat.

According to researchers from Rice University in Texas, men sweat different according to what mood they are in and womens brains can pick up if a man is interested in her.

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - A jury of six military officers at Guantanamo Bay reached a split verdict Wednesday in the war crimes trial of a former driver for Osama bin Laden, clearing him of some charges but convicting him of others that could send him to prison for life.

The Pentagon-selected jury deliberated for about eight hours over three days before convicting Salim Hamdan of supporting terrorism. He was cleared of the conspiracy charge.

Hamdan, who faces a maximum life sentence, held his head in his hands and wept at the defense table after a Navy captain presiding over the jury read the sentence in a hilltop courtroom on this U.S. Navy base.

The judge scheduled a sentencing hearing for later Wednesday.

Defense lawyers had feared a guilty verdict was inevitable, saying the tribunal system's rules seemed designed to achieve convictions, said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Brian Mizer, Salim Hamdan's Pentagon-appointed attorney.

"I don't know if the panel can render fair what has already happened," Mizer told reporters as the jury deliberated.

Hamdan's attorneys said the judge allowed evidence that would not have been admitted by any civilian or military U.S. court, and that interrogations at the center of the government's case were tainted by coercive tactics, including sleep deprivation and solitary confinement.

Supporters of the tribunals said the Bush administration's system provided extraordinary due process rights for defendants.

"This military judge is to be commended for providing a fair and internationally legally sufficient trial for the accused and the government regardless of the ultimate verdict," said Charles "Cully" Stimson, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for detainee affairs.

Hamdan was captured at a roadblock in southern Afghanistan in November 2001 and taken to Guantanamo in May 2002.

The military accused him of transporting missiles for al-Qaida and helping bin Laden escape U.S. retribution following the Sept. 11 attacks by driving him around Afghanistan. Defense attorneys said he was merely a low-level bin Laden employee.
TERRORIST mastermind Osama Bin Laden has topped a list of the world's 10 most wanted criminal masterminds - who are all multi-millionaires.

Bin Laden and other mega-rich criminals use their huge wealth and contacts on every continent to unleash an 'unprecedented crimewave that is borderless', an Interpol spokesman said.

"What they all have in common is that whether their crimes have occurred principally at the national or international level, their crimes have been so significant that they should be pursued globally," Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble said.

Producer Linton 'TJ' White has admitted that the royalties from his monster hit rhythm, Unfinished Business is presently tied up in litigation with genius producer Dave Kelly. However, he was tightlipped on key details involving the discussion about how the proceeds from the sale and licencing of the song would be shared.

"Nothing can be discussed at this point, Dave Kelly never claimed that amount that you mentioned, it's still a legal issue," TJ, who is one of the main contenders for this year's Producer of the Year title, told a reporter.

Unfinished Business scored two Billboard hits, Am So Special has been nominated for Song of the Year, the riddim was one of the biggest last year, so I feel great about all that. Me, Lenky and Skatta are the only producers who had two songs on the Billboard, and Skatta did it after Nina Sky jumped on the riddim afterwards.

TJ said that he felt gratified about his decision not to sell the rights of the rhythm to VP Records when they approached him.

"I believed in myself, VP approached me, but I said no, and in the end, it worked out for the best because I am the one at the negotiating table, I am in the loop where everything is concerned."

There are rumours that producer Dave Kelly had claimed as much as 45 per cent of the rights of the rhythm which borrows heavily from Kelly's classic Showtime rhythm which spawned several huge dancehall hits.

Wanted man killed

January 29, 2009
Started By Garrick10 Comments

ONE OF JAMAICA's most wanted, Bobby Myers, also called 'Friend Friend', met his end during an intense gun battle with the police yesterday morning at Tewari Crescent, Rose Town, Kingston 12.

Myers was on the run since October 4, 2007, when he was implicated in the deaths of 24-year-old Norval White and 20-year-old Shakira Lacey in Newlands, Portmore.

Reports are that a team of police, comprising detectives from Portmore and the Denham Town CIB, went in search of Myers, who allegedly engaged them in a fierce gun battle when cornered.

The police said they were met with gunfire on entering a house in which the wanted man was holed up.

Police personnel said residents on the scene were remarkably calm after the incident, considering it was a police shooting, some even acknowledging that Myers was a wanted man.

"A woman even remarked that 'him really put up a good battle with the police'," a member of the party told THE STAR.

Myers allegedly fled the Newlands area after the 2007 killings in which Lacey's home was fire-b****ed in Beverly Flat.

Police reported then that at 11 p.m. gunmen set the house on fire while searching for a rival gang member.

Lacey attempted to flee but was pinned down by gunfire and her body later discovered in the burnt-out house.

It was also reported that the men proceeded to Newlands Road where they robbed a bar and opened fire on patrons, hitting White and another man. White later succumbed to his injuries at the Spanish Town Hospital, but the other man survived.

No guns for you!

January 29, 2009
Started By Garrick4 Comments

CHAIRMAN of the Firearms Licensing Authority Errol Strong has rejected calls from gun rights lobbyists and members of the public who have been clamouring for Government to relax legislation to allow all law-abiding citizens easier access to owning firearms.

According to Strong, with Jamaica's high propensity for violence, the move could backfire with devastating results.
"In the context of the Jamaican experience, the right for everybody to own a gun could have profound consequences. Quite often attacks on licensed firearm holders and the police are to get the guns," Strong told the Observer.

Strong got the backing of a woman who just this week lost her mother and her three children in a brutal arson/gun attack in the deep rural Jamaican community of Land Top in St Thomas.

The woman, Aretha Smith, said guns are not the answer.
Smith's children - five-year-old Thalia Cousins and her two siblings, Nisha and Jawara, aged two and three years old - and her 55-year-old mother, Angela Lynch were slaughtered during the brutal attack early Monday morning.

Said Smith: "If everyone had a gun then the whole Jamaica would be dead. I don't want none because God will protect me. Whoever did this. them must go down."

The National Gun Rights Association (NGRA), which has won the backing of several Jamaicans in its call to free up the gun licensing system, will this evening host a public meeting at the Altamont Court in Kingston as part of its ongoing lobby.

Under the Firearms Act, citizens 17 years and over can apply for ownership of a firearm at the Firearms Licensing Authority. Applicants will be fingerprinted and vetted to prove that they had no history of mental problems or violence. In addition, applicants should have no previous convictions and will be required to submit photographs and fill out a questionnaire on the safekeeping of firearms. A fee of $6,000 is also required.

But according to NGRA chairman, Shawn Johnson, the process is too tedious. Johnson argued that with Jamaica's out-of-control murder rate, the state should relax the current legislation to allow law-abiding citizens easier access to legal firearms once they are over the age of 21 and able to prove they are competent to own a gun.

He said that while business owners and persons from affluent neighbourhoods are easily granted gun licences and criminals are heavily armed with illegal weaponry, a large number of decent Jamaicans are caught in the crossfire.

"It is the most vulnerable people who are prevented from getting arms. The act is only there to prevent law-abiding citizens from getting firearms. Crime costs the country $83 billion a year so the Government should institute a policy where they train and arm citizens in an effort to cut down that heavy cost," Johnson said.

The NGRA has been lobbying for easier gun ownership for five months and according to Johnson, most of its 550 members are unarmed citizens who are facing difficulties acquiring a firearm.

"We only want a safer Jamaica," Johnson said.
Mark Smith, who operates a route taxi agreed with Johnson.
"As transport people we face danger on the road everyday. Last week one man had to flee from his car after three gunman try hold him up and kill him. If he had a gun then it would be a different story because cutlass can't fight gun," Smith said.

But a Corporate Area teacher, who requested anonymity, said the high level of violence in schools and the negative effect the gun culture has on the minds of the nation's young, made it hard to agree with the gun rights lobbyists.

"There are already too many guns in our society and I think bringing more into the mainstream would only make matters worse," the teacher said.

More than 10 per cent of the 1,611 murders reported last year where committed in the parish of Clarendon but head of the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce, Aldo Brown said he was undecided on the issue.

"On one hand if criminals know that a person has the ability to defend themselves, they must think twice, but on the other hand I don't think we as Jamaicans have the ability or temperament to handle firearms," Brown said.

Mavado - nathaniel stewart

Although Mavado's video for So Special has been withdrawn from BET's afternoon video programme 106&Park, it will air on the station's 'The Deal' as well as on 'MTV Jams'.

When the STAR contacted Mavado's manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, yesterday, he commented that the video will be shown on 'The Deal',a new programme on BET that will replace 'Rap City.'

The video, which was directed by famed Jamaican director Ras Kassa and was filmed in Jamaica, will be the 'Jam of the week' on MTV Jams for next week.

Mavado's So Special video should have premiered on 106&Park Monday afternoon but was at the last minute pulled by the station.

After the video premiere was announced on the programme and multiple copies of the video were sent to BET, the decision was made to not air the video.

In a release sent to the STAR, Jones-Griffith explained, "We were as surprised as everyone at BET's decision not to follow through on their promise to premiere the So Special video on yesterday's (Monday's) 106&Park."

"Despite 106&Park's presenters hyping the premiere for several days, including showing clips from the video, a last-minute intervention by someone in the legal department prevented the video from airing," the release stated.

Censorship issue

"The anticipation was very high for the BET premiere. We weren't notified until late in the day that there was a last-minute objection by one of the legals over there, who had a censorship issue. He objected to 'excessive display of alcohol'and 'careless use of women as writhing set dressings!'

"The video is now available to watch online, so people can make up their own minds about that."

The So Special video can be seen on www.youtube.com and features cameo appearances from Bounty Killer, Bling Dawg and Stacious.

Different edits

Mavado's manager went on to say that when the video was first submitted to BET, they flagged several issues and were sent three different edits before approval.

"The show's programmer had passed the video and had been running promos so she was livid at the decision," he said. "It's disappointing but all is not lost. If anything, this may help publicise the video even more -Mavado can't seem to step without some form of controversy."

According to Jones-Griffith, the video was BET's loss and MTV's gain.
Young Jeezy Will Not Appear On 'The O'Reilly Factor,' Rep Confirms Rep says rapper's vague comments about appearing on show were taken out of context.

Young Jeezy was on the receiving end of barbs from Bill O'Reilly and guest Dennis Miller on "The O'Reilly Factor" last week: The pair took the Snowman and Jay-Z to task for their lyrics on "My President," characterizing their rhymes as hateful toward America.

On the show, O'Reilly casually challenged Jeezy to appear on "The O'Reilly Factor" to respond. Comedian Dennis Miller, O'Reilly's guest during the segment, also threw in some barbs at the Atlanta rapper, calling him "Young Emphysema."

Earlier this week, various Web sites reported Jeezy would join the fray by accepting O'Reilly's challenge. But on Tuesday (January 27), a publicist for the rapper told MTV News that Jeezy's vague comments about possibly appearing on "The O'Reilly Factor" were taken out of context by media outlets, and he has not formally accepted an invitation to appear on the show.

"O'Reilly Factor" producer Ron Mitchell told MTV News on Tuesday that the offer to Young Jeezy still stands.

Jeezy explained to MTV News during inauguration week that he felt it was necessary for him to write "My President."

"Music is how you feel," the MC said about the song. "But if I can say one word, I'll say 'necessary.' I felt it was necessary. I never ever paid attention to any election. [I'm] not really [into] politics or anything like that. It never benefited us. This time around, it's not a black-or-white thing you got somebody in there for us that's well-spoken and gonna handle their business. I just wanted to do my part and let them know we need change, we need help, it's rough out there."

Also during the inaugural festivities, Jay-Z premiered his verse for the song, which has been added to the remix of "My President."

Infamous Shower Posse founder Vivian Blake arrived in Jamaica yesterday after a after spending more than eight years behind bars in the United States.

Blake landed at the Norman Manley International Airport at 12:20 p.m. and was afterwards taken to the CIB headquarters where he was processed.

Police sources say Blake can now live his life as a free man as he is not wanted for any crime committed locally.

Blake was sentenced to 28 years in 2000 for admitted racketeering and criminal conspiracy that allegedly culminated in about 1,400 murders.

He never faced a jury after inking a plea- bargain deal which resulted in the time he served while in Jamaica being used as part of his sentence.

Why is Marijuana illegal?

January 19, 2009
Started By Kingnuddy3 Comments

1. It is perceived as addictive.

Under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug on the basis that is has "a high potential for abuse." What does this mean?

It means that the perception is that people get on marijuana, they get hooked and become "potheads," and it begins to dominate their lives. This unquestionably happens in some cases. But it also happens in the case of alcohol--and alcohol is perfectly legal.

In order to fight this argument for prohibition, legalization advocates need to make the argument that marijuana is not as addictive as government sources claim.

2. It has "no accepted medical use."

Marijuana seems to yield considerable medical benefits for many Americans with ailments ranging from glaucoma to cancer, but these benefits have not been accepted well enough, on a national level. Medical use of marijuana remains a serious national controversy.

In order to fight the argument that marijuana has no medical use, legalization advocates need to highlight the effects it has had on the lives of people who have used the drug for medical reasons.

3. It has been historically linked with narcotics, such as heroin.

The first piece of federal legislation to formally regulate marijuana was the Narcotics Act of 1914, which regulated heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. The only trouble is that cocaine and marijuana are not technically narcotics; the word "narcotic," when used in English, has historically referred to opium derivatives such as heroin and morphine.

But the association stuck, and there is a vast gulf in the American consciousness between "normal" recreational drugs, such as alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, and "abnormal" recreational drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Marijuana is generally associated with the latter category, which is why it can be convincingly portrayed as a "gateway drug."

4. It is associated with unfashionable lifestyles.

Marijuana is often thought of as a drug for hippies and losers. Since it's hard to feel enthusiastic about the prospects of enabling people to become hippies and losers, imposing criminal sanctions for marijuana possession functions as a form of communal "tough love."

5. It was once associated with oppressed ethnic groups.

The intense anti-marijuana movement of the 1930s dovetailed nicely with the intense anti-Chicano movement of the 1930s. Marijuana was associated with Mexican Americans, and a ban on marijuana was seen as a way of discouraging Mexican-American subcultures from developing.

Today, thanks in large part to the very public popularity of marijuana among whites during the 1960s and 1970s, marijuana is no longer seen as what one might call an ethnic drug--but the groundwork for the anti-marijuana movement was laid down at a time when marijuana was seen as an encroachment on the U.S. majority-white culture.

6. Inertia is a powerful force in public policy.

If something has been banned for only a short period of time, then the ban is seen as unstable. If something has been banned for a long time, however, then the ban--no matter how ill-conceived it might be--tends to go unenforced long before it is actually taken off the books.

Take the ban on sodomy, for example. It hasn't really been enforced in any serious way since the 18th century, but most states technically banned same-sex sexual intercourse until the Supreme Court ruled such bans unconstitutional in Lawrence v. Texas (2003).

People tend to be comfortable with the status quo--and the status quo, for nearly a century, has been a literal or de facto federal ban on marijuana.

7. Advocates for marijuana legalization rarely present an appealing case.

To hear some advocates of marijuana legalization say it, the drug cures diseases while it promotes creativity, open-mindedness, moral progression, and a closer relationship with God and/or the cosmos. That sounds incredibly foolish, particularly when the public image of a marijuana user is, again, that of a loser who risks arrest and imprisonment so that he or she can artificially invoke an endorphin release.

A shoe statue in tribute to the Iraqi journalist who hurled his shoes at former U.S. president George Bush was unveiled in the Middle Eastern country yesterday (January 29).

According to Sky News, the giant shoe is made of fibreglass and copper. The shoe is also inscribed with a poem which pays tribute to Muntadhar Al Zeidi, the reporter who threw his shoes at Bush during a Baghdad press conference in December 2008.

Al Zeidi is currently in custody awaiting trial for the incident.

IN A MOVE to save their jobs, workers at Berger Paints Jamaica Limited have agreed to a 20 per cent reduction in basic salary. This comes against the background of several local companies implementing cost-cutting measures, including staff redundancy, in response to the global economic meltdown and the resultant downturn in the Jamaican economy.

The salary cut was signed off in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the management of the paint company and the two unions representing their workers, the National Workers Union (NWU) and its affiliate, the Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE). The MOU comes into effect on Monday, February 2, and will see most workers operating on a four-day workweek based on an eight-hour day.

The salary-reduction agreement should allow Berger to save $70 million over the next six months while saving jobs and improving its financial position.

A committee comprising NWU Deputy Island Supervisor Danny Roberts, UCASE General Secretary Navel Clarke, Berger Paint Regional Managing Director Warren McDonald, dele-gates and management representatives will meet periodically to review the state of the company's performance.

Improve productivity

The committee will also focus on measures to improve productivity and efficiency at the plant.

According to Berger, several other measures have already been instituted by the management to contain cost and improve revenue inflows based on discussions with the unions.

Jamaica Money Market Brokers (JMMB) is the latest company to announce staff redundancy. On Wednesday, JMMB said it would make 50 jobs redundant in March, coming after the implementation of other cost-cutting measures.

High demand for skilled workers

January 30, 2009

DESPITE THE downturn in the economy, local training and placement professionals have identified areas in which demand for skilled/professional workers remains strong.

Diane Lowe, University of Technology placement officer, reports there is demand for jobs in accounting, finance and the building construction sector. Nurses and pharmacists also readily get jobs, she added.

According to Tom McArdle, HEART Trust/NTA senior director for planning and project development, there is strong demand for certified construction workers, trainers and teachers, technicians, retail sales workers, drivers and dispatchers, health-care workers and customer service workers. HEART Trust/NTA, he says, has been training persons to meet the demand for carpenters, plumbers and welders.

"The local job market is moving towards a post-secondary and tertiary profile for its requirements, meaning workers need a reasonable secondary set of qualifications along with technical and vocational or professional training," says McArdle. The local economy "almost always needs barbers and auto mechanics, clerical workers, household workers, plumbers and website designers", he adds.

Highly favoured

McArdle argues that "as labour markets experience more distress, the more qualified are even more highly favoured." He points to the demand for labour overseas which includes a market for agricultural and hospitality workers, teachers, health-care professionals, mechanics and technicians.

In the meantime, Labour Minister Pearnel Charles has declared that there was no freeze on hiring in the government sector. "I know of no employment freeze. The problem is getting trained workers," he said. Vacancies in the government sector include the Ministry of Finance's revenue division, which is seeking to improve efficiencies by streamlining and upgrading its services. Many of these jobs are customer service-related, said a government official, who did not wish to be named.

In other ministries, there are vacancies at the clerical level through middle management. However, The Gleaner was informed that some 85 per cent of vacancies are expected to be filled from within the government service itself.

According to Jacqueline Hinkson, chief personnel officer at the Office of the Services Commissions, "we may go outside for highly specialised personnel, but in general central government vacancies are circularised throughout the government sector and filled from within".

General News $250-m court still idle

January 30, 2009

Almost six months after the National Commercial Bank (NCB) handed over a new Port Antonio courthouse as a gift to the Ministry of Justice, the building still remains closed and unused.

Court sessions are instead being held in quarters behind the Port Antonio Police Station in the cramped town centre of the Portland parish capital, the Observer has learnt.

A Government insider told the Observer this week that the new $250-million courthouse, which was completed in August last year, had a number of flaws that the justice ministry said was preventing its use for court proceedings.
According to the source, the building has no bathroom facilities for lawyers, no cells, the holding area for prisoners is inappropriate and there was no access road to the property.

"The minister has requested a meeting with the NCB project manager to discuss remedying the situation," the source said.

An NCB official, however, expressed surprise at the ministry's position, saying that the courthouse layout was approved by ministry representatives from the previous and current administration, including the sitting Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne and changes were discussed.
"Up to the point when we handed over the keys, we were liaising with them," said the NCB official who requested anonymity.

Minister Lightbourne was yesterday unavailable for comment.

The new courthouse located at Boundbrook, just outside the town centre, was built by NCB in exchange for the old courthouse in the town square.

Under the agreement, the old courthouse building was restored and preserved as a heritage site while housing a branch of the bank.

The Ministry of Justice, on the other hand, was responsible for providing the interior fixtures and furnishings for the new courthouse after construction work by NCB was complete.
However, since taking ownership of the building there has been no interior improvements by the ministry.

Doubts now surround who will be responsible for the
costs to renovate the new courthouse.

According to the Observer source, while the justice ministry was not pleased with the layout, there is uncertainty whether NCB or the ministry would foot the bill for the renovations.

Construction of the new courthouse started in 2006 under the People's National Party administration when A J Nicholson was minister of justice and attorney-general.

In a meeting of the Senate last Friday, Nicholson accused Justice Minister Lightbourne of dragging her feet on justice reform, citing the delay in opening the Portland courthouse.

A Jealous man who chopped off the head of his former common-law wife was found guilty of manslaughter and will be sentenced on February 12.

A Home Circuit Court jury retired for three hours and found 34-year-old Steve Hall, farmer and cook, of Cambridge Hill, near Llandewey, St Thomas, guilty of the offence.

Supreme Court judge Carol Beswick had left the offences of murder and manslaughter for the jury's consideration. The jury found him guilty of the lesser offence because provocation arose in the Crown's case.

The Crown, represented by Winsome Pennicooke, assistant deputy director of public prosecutions, led evidence that February 22, 2006, Hall and 26-year-old Letitia Graham had a dispute and he took a machete and chopped off her head.

Evidence was given that the couple, who had two children, had ended the relationship about a year before the deceased, who was also called 'Angie', was chopped to death.

Visit her children

A witness testified that he took the deceased in his motorcar to Cambridge to visit her children who were living with Hall. When they went there, the deceased asked for the children and the accused ran out of the house with a machete. Hall accused the deceased of having a "Water Commission man". The witness said he tried to persuade Hall to put down the machete because he was heading in the deceased's direction with the machete.

Cross-examination

Hall lowered the machete and then took up stones. He threw stones at the deceased and she in turn threw stones. The witness said when the deceased ran out of stones, Hall ran to where she was and chopped her on the neck, severing the head.

Hall said, in his defence, that he acted in self-defence. He said the deceased hit him with a stone and he fell. He said she came over him and was about to hit him again and he saw a machete and chopped at her.

Under cross-examination he said he loved the deceased. Attorney-at-law Roger Davis is representing Hall.

( L - R ) Wehby, Rousseau

THE ENTIRE BOARD of Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) has been asked to resign, high-level government sources told The Gleaner yesterday.

But Don Wehby, minister with-out portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, who has responsibility for CTL, would not confirm that he has sent the Pat Rousseau-led board packing.

However, Wehby has indicated that bodies under his oversight will be subject to the highest principles of governance.

"When it comes to corporate governance of any statutory body, I have a zero-tolerance approach," the minister said.

Yesterday the Opposition People's National Party (PNP) called for the dismissal of the CTL board.

No other recourse

"Having reviewed the Special Report from the Office of the Contractor General regarding the investigations into the allegations of irregularity surrounding negotiations and proposals for the supply of satellite services for simulcast racing from South Africa and the United Kingdom to Caymanas Track Limited - the Opposition has no other recourse than to request that the portfolio minister fires the entire board," read a statement from PNP Chairman Robert Pickersgill.

Contractor General Greg Christie said Rousseau had breached certain laws, including the Corruption Prevention Act, in his role as chairman of CTL. Christie also said that the members of the board were negligent in the discharge of their duties.

The issue involved the award of a contract to SportsMax to supply satellite services for simulcast racing from South Africa and the United Kingdom to Caymanas Park.

Rousseau is chairman of CTL but he is also a director of SportsMax and International Media Corporation (IMC), which owns 50 per cent of SportsMax.

In his report, Christie said: "... Mr Rousseau, while actively holding the position of chairman of CTL, SportsMax and IMC boards, has improperly carried on negotiations with representatives of Phumelela Gold International (PGI) and has passed information in his capacity as chairman of CTL to Oliver McIntosh, the CEO and president of SportsMax and IMC, with a view to a benefit accruing to SportsMax and/or IMC."

The contractor general said that Rousseau declared his interest in SportsMax to the CTL board but failed to declare his interest in IMC.

Negligently

The contractor general reported that CTL board or some members of the board "acted negligently in the discharge of their responsibilities as CTL directors and/or abused their authorities and offices as directors of CTL and/or breached their respective duties of trust and the company and/or breached their respective fiduciary or statutory duties to the company".

On Wednesday, Rousseau told The Gleaner that he will not comment on the contractor general's report until he has read it. "I have seen but I have not read it, so I can't comment, but do anything you want to do. Don't ask me anything. I have not read it and I will read it in due course," Rousseau said.

Roselyn Jarrett, of Cascade, St Ann, celebrates after winning a Mini Cooper motor car from Digicel on Wednesday.

Talk about luck! Roselyn Jarrett, a 43-year-old child-care worker of Cascade, St Ann, was the lucky winner in Digicel's Mini motorcar giveaway for that parish.

"I'm just overwhelmed; I just thank God," Jarrett told The Gleaner. She took a few moments to compose herself after she was confirmed the winner at the draw, held at Ocean Village Shopping Centre in Ocho Rios.

Anticipation

The ten finalists, inclusive of three women, were previously picked and had come to the venue full of anticipation. But only one would win the spanking new, red Mini Cooper.

They sat under a tent until it was time to take the stage. There, they each chose a sealed envelope from a tray held by a Digicel representative. Of the ten trays, only one held the key to the car.

Jarrett was the second to pick an envelope and was therefore slated to be the second to try to open the door to the car, perched on a flatbed truck, in front of dozens of cheering Digicel customers.

Then the moment arrived.

Contestant number one removed the key from his envelope and, given five seconds to open the door, he failed, as his was not the winning key.

Then Jarrett stepped forward. There was no wild cheering for her as she removed the key from the envelope and calmly tried to fit it into the keyhole. But then, it seemed to fit!

Jubilation

She turned it ... it turned! She then held the door handle and turned it ... and the door opened!

Jubilation! Jarrett couldn't contain her joy and the crowd roared its approval, cheering wildly, some saying they were glad a woman had won.

Jarrett said she wasn't a licenced driver, but the car would come in handy in her job.

Along with the car, she also got one year's insurance coverage and one-year's worth of gas, valued at $15,000 per month.

The other nine finalists didn't go home empty-handed, as each got a cash award and a cell phone.

Gallows in full working order

THE hangman's noose is available for action if and when the State decides to order the execution of death row inmates, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Security, Major Richard Reese, has hinted.

Reese told the Observer Tuesday that the gallows at the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre is functioning properly, after being recently refurbished.

"The gallows is in perfect working order. It is always maintained and was refurbished before the [December] conscience vote [on retaining the death penalty]," he said after at a press conference called by security minister Colonel Trevor MacMillan at the ministry's Kingston offices.
The nation's lawmakers in the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament voted in December to retain the death penalty.

According to Reese, who headed the Department of Correctional Services up to late last year, the cells which house condemned convicts were also refurbished.

"We were not anticipating any decision, it was done in the line of duty. Once the necessary warrant is issued the department is always in a position to carry out that order," Reese said.

There are presently nine death row inmates awaiting execution.

The last person to be sentenced to death was 34-year-old Jeffrey Perry, a security guard who stabbed and slashed his three cousins - Shadice Williams, four; Dwayne Davidson, 15, and 13-year-old Suann Gordon, as they slept in the rustic district of Killancholy, St Mary in January 2005.

Perry, who witnesses say wept bitterly while helping to load the bodies of the children in vehicles at the crime scene, was sentenced earlier this month in the Supreme Court.
He joins Ian Gordon, Michael Asserope, Garfield Campbell, Marlon Johnson, Oneil Hamilton, Michael Allison, Peter Dougal and Junior Campbell, who were all handed the death sentence after being found guilty of heinous murders.

Convicts who are sentenced to death are housed at a special section of the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre.

Faced with an out-of-control crime rate which has averaged over 1,400 per year for the last three years, the majority of Jamaicans have constantly called on the State to resume executions despite objections from local and international human rights lobbyists.

A total of 146 men have been hanged between August 1962 and 1988 when the last executions took place.
Women are not sentenced to death in Jamaica.

JANUARY 29Meet Janice McCarl. The Colorado woman, 53, was arrested last night for allegedly sexually assaulting a male friend late last year. McCarl  was booked into jail on a felony charge of suspicion of sexual assault. According to a police report, a copy of which youll find here, the victim, 50, told investigators that he invited McCarl to a barbecue at his home last November. Following the barbecue, the man contends that he passed out and awoke to find McCarl molesting him. The man, who believes that he was somehow drugged by McCarl, told police that she had her handsin his ass. The man said that when he later confronted McCarl, she laughed and asked, What did I do, kill somebody. He added that McCarl eventually acknowledged the molestation and apologized. McCarls arrest was first reported today by the Daily Camera. The victim told police that, prior to the attack, he had been intimate with McCarl approximately 5-6 times since July 2008. McCarl is scheduled to appear this afternoon in Boulder County District Court.

100 bucks says that when he invited that wheffa over for the barbecue, he had no idea it would be his man-cakes getting skewered.  Thats despicable.  Give the b*tch life.

WHO WAS HOT AT IRIE FM AWARDS?

Next topic is the dressing that the artiste put on at the IRIE FM awards last week. Mi did expect to see some more stylish dressing from everybody. Mi see Bar-Bee inna her one black dress. And D'Angel received an award last year for best-dressed female so mi did expect that she was going to go all out, but she never bring it, she look too casual for the occasion. Spice never look good wearing a frumpy dress that mek she look like she still pregnant. Macka's dress was a mess, she need fi spend a money and hire a stylist, mi no really waan hate, but that is the Gospel truth. Cherine looked OK, really sweet, but the best dressed was Cecile, yea style over fashion, ah that mi say, because whenever you have a great sense of style, yu always ah occur.

Three men have been murdered in separate incidents in St James since the start of the week.

Dead are Wayne Alexander Melbourne, 34, of Lilliput, St James, and Hatfield in Westmoreland; Carl Smith, 35-year-old taxi driver, of Rosemount, St James, and a man known only as 'Home Alone', of Glendevon, also in St James.

In the first incident, the police reported that about 7:00 a.m. Monday, passers-by discovered Melbourne's body lying in a drain in the Lilliput community. The police were summoned and on their arrival, they discovered that the victim had been shot in the head and abdomen.

Melbourne is believed to have been shot elsewhere in the community and his body dumped at the location. No motive has yet been established for the murder.

Continued walking

About midnight, Carl Smith, alias 'Grub', drove his taxi home and was approached by a group of men, who were robbing another taxi driver nearby. The robbers called out to Smith, but he ignored them and continued walking towards his house. One of the gunmen opened fire, hitting him in the neck. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

At 9:30 yesterday morning, 'Home Alone' was walking along the Sun Valley main road in Glendevon, when, on reaching the intersection of the Johnson Hill and Sun Valley roads, a car reportedly drove up and men alighted and shot him several times.

The police say he received approximately nine shots. The men escaped. No motive has yet been established for t

Dear Pastor,

I'm a Jamaican residing in the USA, but I have a troubling matter that is causing me sleepless nights.

Six years ago, at the age of 15, I met and fell in love

with a guy from my community. He is four years older than me. I was in Grade 10 at the time; however, it didn't hinder my school work. I left high school the following year with eight CXC subjects.

As my journey to adulthood continued, so did our relationship

. We were happy and in love, until he started to beat me without reason. I would always forgive him, because deep down, I loved him a lot. As that continued, people in our community would tell me that he was with other girls. When I asked him about it, he denied it and so I kind of blew it off.

Pregnant

In August 2006, I found out that I was pregnant. The news came right after I got accepted by two universities, locally and abroad. I didn't go to either of them because of the situation at the time. However, I had a miscarriage in the third month of the pregnancy.

The guy and everyone in my community accused me of aborting the pregnancy. He and I had an argument on a bus and he said, out loud, "you a dash wey belly gal because you dash wey mi pickney." Pastor, I forgave him and stayed with him.

Christmas 2007, we had an argument about him being with another girl. While we were at the girl's house, he gave me a smack in my face. I fell to the ground. I went to the police station the next day. My face was swollen so badly that I couldn't eat or go to work for a week.

I pressed charges against him, but after he 'sweet-mouthed' me, I decided to drop the charges. Early 2008, we broke off the relationship again and he came to my house and broke my window. So I decided to charge him this time.

Met a nice man

While we were apart I met a nice man, but he was twice my age and I didn't want to be with someone that old. Anyway, I kind of flirted with him. At the same time, I got back with my ex. I got pregnant, but am not sure which one of them is the father.

I love my long-time guy so much that I decided to be with him only. However, I found out that he is seeing an older woman and he is talking behind my back about not wanting me and how I've sold my body by having sex with an older man, because he is rich and I need his money. Pastor, I never wanted a man to support me.

I miss him

So he denied being with the other lady until I got her number and called her. She told me everything. He said bad things about me and the unborn child. So, I decided to go overseas with the older man and leave him alone for good. But I just can't stop thinking about him and how much I miss him. Sometimes I even think of coming back to Jamaica to work things out between us.

Am I stupid and deranged?

M. B., USA.

Dear M. B.,

The answer to the question that you have asked me in the last paragraph is 'yes'. Not only are you silly, you are not honest with yourself and you are fooling yourself by believing that because you have eight subjects in the CXC, you are smart. Your passes will help to open doors of opportunity for you and that is it. These passes don't help you to know how to behave with a man.

If you were smart, you would not have allowed a young man to beat you and you wouldn't have accepted his verbal abuse either. You are still thinking like a little kid. You have had two men in your life and having unprotected sex with both of them, surely, was not smart.

ragamuffin

This abusive young man has a dirty mouth and he is disrespectful. He doesn't know when not to speak, but the way you are behaving gives the impression that you enjoy being in the company of a "ragamuffin".

The man who is much older has treated you like a lady, but you are out to deceive him. Right now you are not even sure whose baby you are carrying and your thoughts are not with the older gentleman. You are a user. You may not want to accept that, but that is what you are.

If you want to be beaten, you may return to Jamaica and go back to your old boyfriend. If you want to live a happy life, you should consider staying with the older gentleman. I get it. You don't like good. You are not smart enough to appreciate a good man.

A number of entertainers have been confirmed to perform at this years fourth annual Excellence in Music and Entertainment Awards (EME) awards in the Gardens of the Jamaica Pegasus hotel on February 7.

Already confirmed are Beenie Man, Anthony B, Queen Ifrica, Tarrus Riley, Busy Signal, Demarco, RDX, Brick and Lace, Duane Stephenson, Dean Fraser, Etana and Courtney John. All of these entertainers are nominees and possible awardees next week. At this years EMEs, Alicia Keys will be honoured for her continued support of reggae music.

Among the 25 categories in the EME Awards is one called International Friends of Reggae, and the organizers have announced that Akon and Keys have been selected as this year's recipients. Reggae fans still rave about  Keys' performance at last year's American Music Awards (AMA) when she collaborated voluntarily with reggae artistes, Junior Reid, Chaka Demus and Pliers and Beenie Man turning the somewhat staid by-the-numbers event into a sort of exciting, unpredictable 'reggae bashment'.
