MIAMI (AP)Dwyane Wade sued his estranged wife and two of her lawyers Wednesday over accusations the Miami Heat star contracted a sexually transmitted disease through an extramarital affair.
In the lawsuit, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press, Wade is seeking at least $50,000 in damages from each defendant.
Siohvaughn Wade said last month the player infected her with an unspecified disease in 2007. Weeks later, she withdrew the claim from the court hearing the divorce case for unknown reasons.
That wasnt enough to satisfy the 2006 NBA finals MVP, who said her allegations not only defamed him, but caused embarra**ment and humiliation along with damaging future earning potential.
It has been difficult to see false allegations, rumors and gossip repeatedly discussed in public about my personal life, Dwyane Wade said in a statement released to the AP. I had no other choice but to file this action in order to clear my name.
LUCEA, Hanover - Three men who yesterday stabbed a Rusea's High School student before robbing him of his cellular phone and an undisclosed sum of money were held by the police, with the assistance of fishermen, after they jumped into the sea in their bid to escape.
Police said a grade nine student, who was late for school where Jamaica Day celebrations had already started, was taking a 'shortcut' to the school compound when he was attacked by the three men armed with knives.
The accused men, the police reported, demanded the student's cellular phone, and when their demand was not met they beat and stabbed him on the right arm. The men then robbed the boy of his cellphone and wallet. The amount of money in the wallet was not ascertained.
An alarm was raised by the injured student, after which a group of people chased the men who ran in the direction of the sea.
The thieves jumped into the water but were later brought back to shore by members of the Lucea Police Division, with the assistance of fishermen who had a boat located nearby.
The Rusea's High School principal yesterday lauded the police and others for their swift action which led to the apprehension of the three men.
"We are very grateful for the quick response from police and persons who cordoned off the area where the perpetrators jumped in the sea," said Principal June Thompson. "I think this will put a damper on criminal activities which are rampant in the vicinity of the school premises."
Thompson told the Observer that just this Thursday a grade 11 male student was held up and robbed of his cellphone and $3,000 cash at the school gate.
The cash was given to the boy by his mother to pay bills on his way home from school.
Following its previous ban on vulgar and explicit dancehall songs, the Broadcasting Commission yesterday placed a further prohibition on the transmission of all soca music with content that displays, simulates or instructs sexual activities or positions.
The island's electronic media watchdog has also outlawed the broadcasting of music with lyrics deemed to be glorifying the gun and promoting murder and other acts of violence.
The commission, last week, banned radio and television stations from airing songs with explicitly sexual and violent content, even if concealed by having bleeps. All dancehall music, which qualified as 'daggerin' content - the rapidly emerging culture of quasi-erotic dances and music - was also outlawed from the airwaves.
This has triggered a lively debate in some quarters, with many individuals accusing the commission of a double-standard approach to dancehall, while turning a blind eye to the crude and sometimes overtly sexual dancing during carnival parades.
However, the regulatory body had, earlier this month, said it would act against "all types of musical broadcast output, including soca music and carnival music".
Yesterday, the commission officially put in place its ban on some soca, calypso and hip-hop music.
The ban also extends to any content from live coverage or recorded shows, dances or events, which displays children participating in activities that simulate sexual activities or positions, whether in street parades, stage shows or at any other event.
Taken off the airwaves
The commission's directive on 'gun lyrics' further stipulates that any recording, live song or music video which promotes and/or glorifies the use of guns or other offensive weapons, offences against the person, such as rape, murder, and mob violence, or other offences, such as arson should be taken off the airwaves.
"Both directives require that programme managers and station owners or operators take immediate steps to prevent the transmission of any material to which these directives apply or which falls into the category of edited musical content using techniques of bleeping or beeping," continued the release.
The Gleaner was unable to contact Jamaica carnival director, Julian Lee-Samuels, daughter of the late soca king Byron Lee, for comment.
Ban on soca
Acting under Regulation 30 (d) and exercising powers granted under Regulation 31 of the Television and Sound Broadcasting Regulations, the Broadcasting Commission now requires the immediate halt to the transmission of "any live presentation, audio recording or music video from the soca, hip-hop or any other music genre, which promotes, contains references to, or is otherwise suggestive of, 'daggerin' or which publicly displays, simulates or instructs explicit sexual activities or positions"'You're all social hypocrites' - Kartel writes letter lashing out at 'Rampin' Shop' critics
Popular deejay Adidja 'Vybz Kartel' Palmer is defending his Rampin' Shop and has sought to speak out against the critics of the song.
In a letter which he sent to THE STAR on the weekend, the deejay responded to an article which was done by Esther Tyson titled 'Rampin' Shop - musical poison', which begged for a stop to be placed on "the promotion of such filth".
Kartel begins the letter by dubbing those who view the song as poison 'social hypocrites'.
"This is a response to an article written by Esther Tyson, (principal of the Ardenne High School in St Andrew) and advocated by the rest of the social hypocrites who claim Rampin' Shop is musical poison," Kartel writes before expressing his views as to what is affecting the minds of the nation's children.
Devastating impact
"The 'devastating impact on the psyche of Jamaican children' is not caused by daggerin' songs but rather by socio-economic conditions which leave children without free education, with single-parent homes (or shacks), lack of social infrastructure in ghetto communities, unemployed and disfranchised young men with no basic skills who are caught up in the 'gun culture' cultivated by our politicians in the 1960s/'70s. These are all faults of the governments (PNP and JLP)."
The deejay then touched on the issue of 'double standards', while making reference to two of his songs for which he claims he was given no great compliment by those who now find a problem with Rampin' Shop.
"When Vybz Kartel did Money Fi Spen (with the intro being 'we nah run dung gun ... we nah run dung war), it went to number one on the charts. No accolades were given. When I did Emergency, no accolades were given; but when the same audience that embraced all those 'reality' songs embraced Rampin' Shop for what it is - music, it's a problem to you and yours, the Scribes and Pharisees of our time," Kartel wrote.
Undercover Jekyll and Hyde
In the letter, Kartel also questions the contribution of his critics to dancehall music before asking: "Incidentally, has anyone ever wondered why this song is so big? It's because everybody loves it and that's the whole bottom and top line. In part, because contrary to what is said, there are a lot of self-righteous, undercover Jekyll and Hyde characters."
The letter continues, "Rampin' Shop is just as easily accessible to the public as porn sites on the Internet via laptop or phone; as accessible as R-rated movies or carnival revellers 'daggerin in broad day uptown during the day-time on our local and cable television stations. I encourage you to use your obviously lengthy spare time to write about things that actually affect the nation like, I dunno, probably a light-bulb scandal, etc ... and stop making much ado about nothing."
The song Rampin' Shop done by Vybz Kartel and Spice was released late last year and has become a hot topic for critics who say the song is not fit for airplay.
One such critic, Tyson, in her column published in The Sunday Gleaner ( February 1, 2009), blasted the song while claiming that it only aided in devastating the psyche of Jamaican children.
On Friday evening, the Broadcasting Commission issued a release stating that with immediate effect, a ban has been placed on the playing of all daggerin' songs and songs that require 'bleeping'.
Rampin' Shop, charged with sexually explicit lyrics, was among the list of songs to be banned.
R. Allen Stanford, the Texas billionaire who has been on the lam since the SEC charged him for fraud on Tuesday, has been found in Virginia.
MSNBC is reporting that the "FBI served civil papers" to the banker, who is accused of trying to bilk 50,000 clients out of $8 billion.
ABC is reporting that Stanford turned in his passport to federal prosecutors.
Quoting one of Stanford's lobbyists, Ben Barnes, who is a former Texas public official, ABC reported that Stanford is "very depressed," and wanted to end the manhunt for him by going to the Justice Department.
Earlier this week, U.S. Marshals seized Stanford's assets, and clients have been flocking to Antigua to try and withdraw funds.
ABC is also reporting that Stanford is also under investigation in connection with an alleged drug money-laundering scheme for Mexico's Gulf Cartel.
Dmitriy V. Sklyarov
MUNCIE -- A self-proclaimed white supremacist and Satan worshiper is now also a convicted felon.
Dmitriy V. Sklyarov, 20, of rural Muncie, has pleaded guilty to battery resulting in bodily injury, a Class D felony, filed after he was accused of biting a 9-year-old boy at least 13 times on the arms and legs last Oct. 8.
Delaware Circuit Court 5 Judge Thomas Cannon Jr. accepted the terms of a plea agreement that called for a one-year jail term and $100 fine.
A charge of neglect of a dependent was dismissed.
At last week's hearing, public defender Steven Bruce said his client was engaged in horseplay with a child left in his care when the boy bit him.
"I bit him back," Sklyarov said.
"Multiple times, correct?" Bruce asked.
"Yes," the defendant responded.
Last week's court session was considerably more low key than a Dec. 1 hearing that saw Sklyarov curse at Cannon's predecessor on the Circuit Court 5 bench, Chris Teagle, also shouting "Heil Hitler!" and "white power" before drawing a 90-day sentence for contempt of court.
The former Wes-Del High School student also wrote Teagle a letter telling the judge he sat on a "throne of lies."
Because he is serving the 90-day contempt sentence, Sklyarov received credit for the 53 days he spent in jail before the Dec. 1 hearing, but will not begin serving the remainder of his one-year sentence until March 1.
Cannon told Sklyarov he was willing to "revisit that contempt" and asked the defendant if he wanted to offer an explanation of his behavior.
"I don't agree with how the court functions, so that's why I disrupted the court," Sklyarov said. Cannon let the 90-day sentence stand.
Sklyarov had introduced himself to Cannon, who became judge Jan. 1, in a Jan. 21 letter that offered "infernal greetings."
"I'm just writing to say hi and to say I hope the whole process of me having to come to court goes through fast so I won't have to keep coming to court over and over again," the defendant wrote.
Discussion at the Dec. 1 hearing had focused at times on the mental competency of Sklyarov, who moved to the U.S. with his mother more than a decade ago from Ukraine in the former Soviet Union.
In his letter to Cannon, Sklyarov wrote he was "more than competent to stand trial," and suggested claims to the contrary were based entirely on his Nazi beliefs and worship of Satan.
"It does not take too much to be considered insane when you are not a brainwashed sheep that believes everything they say on the mass media," he wrote. "Jews and Christians communicate with their God in their places of worship, but when I communicate with my God, I am insane."
Investigations by THE STAR have revealed a thriving prostitution ring, in at least four non-traditional schools, with boys acting as pimps for several of the girls from their institutions.
The students, with whom we spoke, proudly declared that while the activity of girls selling themselves was nothing new, the addition of the 'pimps' was a rather fresh idea.
"Yu si di pimp part now, dat a di new way; but a long time some girl a sell demself. Dat a nuh nuttin new," said one student.
Go-between
The pimps, who are the link between the girls and their clients, are responsible for the collection of fees, the setting up of 'dates', and even for protection. They are said to be making no less than $2,500 or as much as $5,000 per week for their services.
"Yuh see me now, a me tek di attention off a di girl ... Most things a me deal dem fi har .. Me set up har meeting dem. Most time a me collect di money and a me mek sure seh nobody nuh violate," explained *Ringo, a 17-year-old student who admitted to playing the role of a pimp.
When asked how they got clients for such young girls, they all explained that the process was easy.
"Dat a di least man ... It simple. Mi know a likkle man and mi jus' tell him seh mi have a nice girl fi bus him pon and mek dem meet up ... Afta dat, mi mek him kno seh if nuttin fi gwaan, him haffi pay me. As simple as dat," Ringo said.
Another pimp, 18-year-old Damion, explained that the payment received depended on the understanding between the parties involved.
"Di food weh yu get depends pon wha you and di female agree pon ... Inna most case, it depend pon how much she mek fi a week," he explained. He added "Yu see seh a nuh easy work, don't, 'cause if yu waan get all a four grand fi di week, yu haffi mek sure yu set up enough date fi yu girl fi mek a big food weh she can squeeze yu deh amount deh."
While not aware of the situation, Deputy Superintendent Merrick Watson, operations officer at the Community Safety Branch of the Safe Schools Programme, took the opportunity to explain that certain happenings within schools are simply a reflection of the wider society.
"The school remains a micro-image of the wider society, what happens in the society, sad to say, happens in our schools," he said.
While at first he took a tight-lipped stance on the topic, he did go on to say that "students will always find creative ways to do what they want to do."
During our investigations, the students involved told THE STAR they implemented the 'pimp scenario' mainly because of what they describe as "serious times".
"Yu see how serious time get, look how much girl di man dem a kidnap, a really that's how wi start use di boys dem fi handle most a business eno," Keisha, one student prostitute explained.
In explaining herself further, the fourth-form student said; "It kinda tek di eyes off a we to eno, 'cause usually people woulda probably si wi a talk to di man dem and den wi name start call up, suh wi jus mek di boy dem do most a di talking. That way nobody nuh know what a gwaan."
When the THE STAR spoke to the principal of one of the schools where the activity takes place, he explained that while they are aware that students do take part in sexual activities, it would be hard to say that that they are involved in prostitution.
"For us to say that students are taking part in prostitution it would have to be a case that we have investigated and that's hard to do because I've never heard of such activities on the school grounds," one principal said.
He also went on to say that he was not aware the role of some of the schoolboys in the activity.
At least one of the other principals, however, claimed that while he is was not aware of the activity in his school, it was quite possible that it was happening.
"Yes we know that kids have sex, that's no secret. But as it relates to them being prostitutes and pimps, I can't say I have that much knowledge to go so in depth. But to be honest these kids do some crazy stuff, so I don't think that's out of their way," he said.
When THE STAR spoke to Dr. Charlene Ashley, director of communications at the Ministry of Education, she also said that the ministry was unaware of any such activities.
*Names changed on request.
In what can be considered a case of extreme punishment, an eight-year-old boy was doused with gasolene and set afire because he lost a foot of his school shoes.
The Kingston West police say the child is now in hospital and nursing third-degree burns to over 40 per cent of his body.
"Yu nuh hear 'bout it? My gosh if yu eva si di likkle bway yu cry," a policewoman remarked to her colleague when THE WEEKEND STAR called the Trench Town Police Station and inquired about the incident yesterday.
The child's father was on Wednesday slapped with a charge of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm and will appear in court on Monday.
Police say the child wore his regular pair of shoes to school on Tuesday. He, however, carried another pair with him, which he is said to have put on when he arrived at school.
When he returned home about 4 p.m., he realised that one foot from the pair of school shoes was missing.
Fiery reprimand
The police say that the boy's father tried to reprimand his son by lighting a circle of fire, which he made by pouring gasolene around his son before igniting the substance.
It is further reported that the child ran but was ordered by his father to return to the fiery circle. The child complied but then tried to run again.
The father, it is alleged, then threw the gasolene at the running child.
This caused a huge burst of flames, which lit up the infant. He was taken to hospital where he is being treated.
Word of the incident has left residents commenting about the incident.
"Di likkle yute scarred fi life star, a eediat ting dat all because di yute lose him school shoes. Everybody 'bout ya vex, wi nah lie," said 25-year-old Kevin Hendricks.
"School shoes can always buy back eno. Wi only hope seh him nuh scar up too much still, 'cause dat can have a negative impact pon him future still," another resident added.

In a development that comes as the Obama administration is drawing up its policy on negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear programme, UN officials said Iran had produced more nuclear material than previously thought.
They said Iran had accumulated more than one tonne of low enriched uranium hexafluoride at a facility in Natanz.
If such a quantity were further enriched it could produce more than 20kg of fissile material enough for a b****.
It appears that Iran has walked right up to the threshold of having enough low enriched uranium to provide enough raw material for a single b****, said Peter Zimmerman, a former chief scientist of the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency...
PRESIDENT and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Jamaica Bruce Nobles says staff cuts at the ailing national carrier will begin next month and continue through for 90 days as the airline restructures its operations in preparation for divestment.
Nobles was, however, unable to say how many workers would be affected by the job cuts, saying there were a number of things being worked out as the company implements its new 2009/10 business plan, aimed at making the airline more viable.
"I know we will reduce the company's operation by one third and this includes the payroll, but we do not yet know how many persons will be going," Nobles told the Observer.
According to Nobles, the airline first want to find out how many of the more than 2,000 staff members will opt for voluntary redundancy, thus reducing the number of involuntary redundancies.
In the meantime, the new schedule for the airline, which saw it chopping its Miami, Atlanta and Cayman Islands routes, will begin next month. As a result, Nobles said employees in North America who are employed to Miami and Atlanta stations as well as Cayman Islands will be among the first to lose their jobs.
Nobles, who yesterday made a presentation to Parliament's Public Administration Appropriations Committee at Gordon House in Kingston rebutted claims that Air Jamaica had the highest number of pilots per ratio to planes. For its 14 planes the national carrier currently employs 149 pilots.
MARUBENI Caribbean Power Holding (MCPH) has agreed to sell half of its 80 per cent stake in the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) of the United Arab Emirates.
The announcement comes less than two years after Marubeni acquired majority ownership in the Jamaican light and power company.
TAQA will therefore jointly own 80 per cent of JPS with Marubeni, while the Government of Jamaica will retain its 20 per cent interest.
President of Marubeni Caribbean, Tomofumi f*kuda, said the partnership will bring even greater value to Caribbean utilities, and to JPS in particular.
"JPS and the other Caribbean power companies in which MCPH has a stake will benefit from the depth of knowledge and proven expertise that TAQA has in electricity generation, utility operations and project management. TAQA is bringing to this partnership the same long-term commitment as Marubeni and a keen interest in the growth potential of JPS and the other Caribbean businesses," he said.
He added that the partnership with TAQA will provide JPS with strong support in replacing assets and overhauling the public electricity infrastructure to achieve greater efficiency.
"As JPS continues to work towards becoming more efficient and cost-effective; fuel diversification through new generation facilities, including potential coal, petcoke and natural gas and particularly more renewable energy projects such as wind and hydro, will continue to be among the focus areas of this partnership," said f*kuda.
Finance Minister Audley Shaw, who announced the approval of the sale yesterday, said the deal was welcomed as the investment represented the retirement of old and inefficient power generation units, while adding incremental capacity to the national grid.
BARRING a last-minute reprieve, Jamaican-born Edward Bell will be executed in Virginia, USA at 9:00 tomorrow night for the 1999 gun murder of a police officer.
BELL. facing death by lethal injection |
Bell, 42, has been on death row for seven years after exhausting all avenues of appeal in the United States justice system.
Bell, a native of Portland in eastern Jamaica, was found guilty of murder of police sergeant Ricky Timbrook, who was chasing him in a dark alley on the night of October 29, 1999 in the city of Winchester. The cop was shot once in the face with a .38 revolver. He died on the spot.
After an eight-hour search, Bell was found hiding in the basement of a house not far from where Timbrook was killed. Hours later, cops found the gun used in the crime hidden under a pile of bricks at the same premises.
Bell's fingerprints were found on the weapon and ballistic tests later found gunshot residue on his hands.
Under Virginia law, the murder of a law enforcement officer is punishable by death and Bell, who has maintained his innocence, can only be spared if Governor Timothy Kaine grants him clemency and reduces his sentence to life.
Kaine last year lifted a temporary moratorium on the Virginia death penalty, but has not responded to a European Union appeal to save Bell's life on humanitarian grounds.
Bell has fought hard to stave off the death penalty but his case has been thrown out by the Supreme Court of Virginia, the Federal District Court and the US Supreme Court.
Prosecutors in the case argued that Bell had a history of violence and was previously arrested and charged for illegal firearm and ammunition offences, according to US media reports.
The prosecutors, the reports said, pointed to Bell's arrest for malicious destruction of property and malicious wounding in Port Antonio, Portland in January 1985 as proof that he had a history of violence.
In that incident Bell was found guilty of stabbing a man and injuring him with a knife during a dispute, and was sentenced to 10 days or pay a $40-fine for unlawful wounding and 10 days or $50 for malicious wounding in the Port Antonio Resident Magistrate's Court. At that time the rate of exchange was J$5.50 to US$1.00.
Meanwhile, police in the United States testified that Bell attempted to escape state troopers and resisted arrest after he was pulled over for a routine speeding violation.
Authorities used helicopters and police dogs to find Bell and charge him with fleeing an arrest, driving without a licence and speeding.
Also, one of Bell's former girlfriends said he held a gun to her head, beat her head against his car and sexually assaulted her during a 1997 argument in the middle of a public street.
At least four witnesses also said they knew Bell as a drug dealer of crack cocaine.
Executions in Virginia are carried out by lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Centre.
Some people marry each other, divorce and then re-marry. This sounds ridiculous but it happens and in most of the cases marriage ends in divorce, never to come together again. Most people try to linger on to their marriage. They do not know when to divorce. Let us try to understand the reasons why people want to divorce.
Some frequently cited reasons for divorce:
1. Lack of commitment towards marriage, sexual incompatibility and infidelity
Commitment may be lacking in one of the partners because marriage happens not always out of love. It could be seen as making a good deal and when it is found that the deal is not what he or she expected divorce happens. Besides, people looking for quick solutions cannot sustain marriage for long.
Philandering habits die hard and this leads to infidelity. People with uncontrollable libido or unhappy with his or her partner cannot be loyal to their partners. So when the wife or husband comes to know of his or her partner cheating on him or her divorce turns out to be the answer. The question that arises is when to divorce.
2. Lack of communication between spouses
Without communication no relationship can be effective. Keeping your resentments simmering within, your partner does not come to know what is happening with you and this is likely to create distance between you and your partner.
3.Abandonment, Alcohol Addiction , Substance Abuse
When one of the partners deserts his or her partner for quite some time or a longer period divorce emerges as the answer. One leaves his or her partner because of the latters bad habits.
Alcohol addiction and abuse prevent marital bliss because of the change in behavior pattern which makes an adverse impact upon mental peace and physical security.
4. Physical Abuse, Sexual Abuse and Emotional Abuse
These abuses are not uncommon and tolerating them is not good and a person who loves himself or herself would not put with such abuses.
5.Inability to manage or resolve conflict
Lack of maturity disables one to manage conflicts and handle personality differences or irreconcilable differences
6.Differences in personal and career goals
People who cohabit before marriage have higher rates of divorce than people who didnt cohabit before marriage because differences become gigantic in course of time. Initial comfort before marriage was imagined to take things ahead in future but in reality it does not happen.
7. Different expectations about household tasks and financial problems
When expectations do not match it affects relationships most. This leads to personality conflict because none of them are willing to do things or are ready to sacrifice their time and comfort.
Because what one wants the other to do, the other does not do there is dissatisfaction and frustration. In such instances love becomes sour. This exacerbates with financial problems because material needs remain unfulfilled and creates discontent in the minds of both the partners as one cannot give and feels humiliated and the other is frustrated because of long standing inconveniences.
8. Intellectual Incompatibility and Inflexibility
Intellectual incompatibility creates misunderstandings. And the smarter person feels frustrated while the less intelligent partner is mad about not reaching the level of intelligence of the other and makes life miserable for himself or herself and for the others also.
9. Mental Instability or Mental Illness
Insanity does not allow space for normal communication.
10. Religious beliefs, cultural and lifestyle differences
Cultural values clash unless we are highly adaptive in nature. Orthodoxy leads to intolerance and conservatism gags the spontaneity of life. So this leads to divorce after some time of marriage

While outrage at daggerin' songs in electronic media has largely been centred at safeguarding the interests of children, sometimes it's adults who are hollering for rescue from kids.
Just days after the police Traffic Division warned of a major assault on the playing of music by public-transport operators, busmen and cabbies were still willing to ride their luck.
When this Gleaner reporter travelled on several buses in the Corporate Area last Friday, drivers popped in CDs laden with daggerin' lyrics - X-rated songs promoting dance simulation of sex.
On one bus, a group of uniform-clad schoolgirls issued instructions to the driver about their preferred playlist.
He gladly obliged.
As gangsta music blared, the bus was transformed into an impromptu dancehall session as the schoolgirls let out whoops of joy. Then he upped the vibe with daggerin' songs.
Protest by passenger
There were no voices of dissent until one particularly graphic song - Aidonia's Hundred Stab - seemed to grate the nerves of a passenger. The woman who was sitting in the back of the bus with a child insisted that the driver move to a different beat. Ironically, it was the schoolgirls beside him who played the role of selector.
"A true lady!" the driver shouted.
"Mi tell di bwoy before him make di chune nuffi put nuh bad word in deh eenuh. What a wicked artiste, man!" he said with a smirk before turning the music back on.
"A Christian music yuh fi play!" the woman yelled from the back in response to the driver's defiance.
"A true, man! Ductor, weh di gospel CD weh yuh buy deh?" the driver joked.
He then skipped the track to another less graphic daggerin' song, simultaneously bucking the volume to drown further dissent.
Doubts about crackdown
Mark Richards, a security guard, who works in full view of the major bus terminals in Half-Way Tree, told The Gleaner that he is not convinced that the ban on playing music on public buses and taxicabs will work unless the police take charge.
"You haffi go get a policeman fi pursue the bus them and take the CD dem, or take out the music," he said. "People a say stop play but dem continue, and yuh know this type a hooligan conducta weh we have, and even drivers, dem do whatever dem feel like, them play whatever dem feel."
The sexiness that is LisaRaye recently sat down with Bossip amidst her divorce dealings to update us on Da Brat, and why she didnt quite understand why shes a shonuff MILF:
Bossip: Most men have put you into that sexy iconic space a la Pam Grier. Do you subscribe to it?
LisaRaye: At the beginning it was like sex symbol? What is it about me thats sexy? I used to think that sexy was more for older women. Like, you would find the ladies on Dynasty, sexy. I would try to figure that out. I would ask, what do find thats sexy about me? They would say its the way that you eat. The way that you walk. So, I would try to watch myself walk in the mirror. But, I think that we dont want to know what sexy is because if its what youre doing, then just continue to do what youre doing. I think Angelina Jolie has put it into perspective for me because shes a younger woman she has a sex appeal about her. I think its just you being. So if being a sex symbol is what they tag me to be, I dont see it as a bad thing. I grasp that, even in my first lady role.Bossip: Alright, lets switch gears. How is the Da Brat doing?
LisaRaye: Shes doing wonderful and she actually has a very high spirit. Which surprising to me because sometimes I call her and I try to kick it up a few notches. Shes found some hidden talents that she didnt know she had. Shes getting her mind and body and spirit in sync.Bossip: When is she getting out?
LisaRaye: She was given three years and it hasnt even been six months yet. We may be able to get some time off for good behavior, I dont really know how the system works so. ..Bossip: A while back there was some controversy when Katt Williams was trying to call out Jermaine Dupri for not getting in touch with Da Brat at all. Can you speak about that?
LisaRaye: I know anything about that. This is the first time that Im hearing it. Jail calls have to be received from a landline, so if youre running like Jermaine does and like Im doing then you often miss that call. I miss a lot of her calls as well. With the time difference, he doesnt know when shes gonna be able to call.Bossip: What are some of the talents shes discovered since shes been locked up?
LisaRaye: Shes knows how to draw. Actually, very well.Bossip: What toll has her incarceration taken on you?
LisaRaye: When you think about anybody being In a small room for the majority of the day, its like how do you grow from that. Mostly, I keep thinking about the lesson learned and the level of comfort in which shell feel with trying to figure out how that happened, why it happened and what can she do to prevent it. Sometimes you need something to happen to make you stand still and smell the roses. You have to learn from your mistakes. I tell everyone especially kids, dont be afraid to make mistakes because those mistakes make you stronger.Bossip: Gotcha. Whats going on with this Datari Turner cat you were seen with at the NAACP awards?
LisaRaye: Datari and I are friends. He and I were with the same publicist years ago. Were actually selling a show together.Bossip: So you guys are not dating?
LisaRaye: Unfortunately girl, no. That fine chocolate thang. Im more like his big sister.Bossip: Would you date a younger guy?
LisaRaye: If hes mature. I need him to be mature and stable.Bossip: Have you ever had any crazy run ins with a male fan?
LisaRaye: It was at the amphitheatre in Universal Studios. All of the rappers were there and I believe Steve Harvey was hosting and they had different celebrities come up on the stage and introduce different acts. Backstage, one of the rappers guys, part of his posse, came up to me and said Oh my God, I cant believe Im meeting you in person! You a bad ass bitch. I was like oookay. Thats when you do have to go into your sister girl realness because I knew what he meant. It wasnt a bad thing. Girl, I got ready to turn around and walk away and he smacked me on my butt. It stung. Every rapper in there got on him from Snoop to E-40. Steve Harvey had him in the room and they were like You dont do a woman like that. Man, shes a mother. Shes not in the movies. That aint Diamond. I remember Snoop saying, You can do anybody else up in here, but not LisaRaye! I felt very respected and loved by the street guys and the rappers. I felt that love. But, the fellas made him apologize to me and he was so apologetic.Bossip: How do you feel like your image was portrayed in the media during your divorce fiasco?
LisaRaye: I didnt keep a close eye on what was being said. I think what made me realize that a lot was going on, was when paparazzi started following me. I was like what a minute Ive never been this type of celebrity where they really gave a damn about where I am and where Im getting my eyebrows arched. My mindset was more on exactly what I was going through. When I started hearing the news, I knew that I needed to maintain my silence because first of all, I didnt want to lose my cool. Second of all I understand the image and trying to respect the image of the first lady of Turks and Caicos Islands. Theres a level of maturity that you reach with hardship, so with that, I was getting my grown woman on. The Lisa Raye that we know would have said, Nigga, I dont love you like this to be going through all this bullsh*t. But, the first lady and the wife of the premier had to handle this situation totally different.Cut to now, my husband is still under investigation for corruption and dishonesty AND an investigation for rape. I had to hear all of the evidence myself because I didnt know what was going on. When I heard all of that evidence that I had never head, I felt bam***bozled. I felt like it was a ploy and a plan to have me do what he wanted me to do for him. He had a plan and I didnt know the plan. To me its like, if youre playing a game at least give me the rules so I can know how to play. In hearing that I decided that my people Hollywood- deserve to know whats going on so they can even figure out how to support me.

Amy Winehouse and her embattled sobriety are making strides, but staying put in the Caribbean for the time being.
Amy Winehouses mother has denied the star is set to return to Britain following her extended holiday in the Caribbean - insisting the singer needs more time to recover. Winehouse has been enjoying a sunshine break in the resort since December (08) following numerous health problems throughout 2008. She was rumoured to be eyeing a return to London to begin plotting her chart comeback before she was hospitalised on the island last week (13Feb09).The emergency is said to have been triggered when Winehouse ran out of prescription medication used in her battle against drink and drugs. And the stars mum, Janis, insists that although the holiday is having a positive affect on her daughters health, she still has a long way to go before she is ready to return home. Janis tells British magazine Heat, Amy is in a really good place at the moment. Shes eating well and has put on some weight, which Im really pleased about. Shes also been doing so much out there to clear her head. She has no plans to come back home right now and definitely doesnt want to go back to (her home in ) Camden. Who knows where shell go, but for now she wants to be away from it all. And Janis admits shes pleased the star agreed to the break - because it removed her from negative influences in London. She adds, She just needed to get away from certain people around her who were bringing her down. Shell be OK, she just needs to stay away from those people and her family will do everything we can to ensure she does.
At the rate Amy was going back home, she might just wanna set up shop in the islands for good.

The Jamaica Council of Churches (JCC) has become the latest addition to the ongoing debate surrounding the purification of Jamaican dancehall music, with the organisation calling for a further ban to be placed on street and community dances, which perpetuate the playing of sexually crude and explicit songs.
The umbrella church agency has further called on the police to exercise a zero-tolerance approach towards both public and private vehicles with heavily tinted windows that play loud and vulgar music, claiming that this is contributing to the general degradation of morals in society.
The JCC, in a statement yesterday, said it was at one with the recent decision made by the Broadcasting Commission to ban the media from airing X-rated songs, such as the chart-topping hit by popular DJs Vybz Kartel and Spice, Rampin' Shop, and other tunes which could be deemed to be 'daggerin' songs'.
The commission's stance has sparked a lively debate across several sections of the country, but the majority of contributors appear to have sided with the attempt to clean up the airwaves.
Clean up music
General secretary of the JCC, the Reverend Gary Harriott, told The Gleaner yesterday that if Jamaicans were really serious about renewing certain values in society, then it must begin with cleaning up the music in the communities and public transportation.
He further said the council was not calling for a wholesale banning of street dances in general, but those dances that promoted the playing of explicitly sexual and vulgar songs.
"It is not that we are saying no dance, but those that communicate these kinds of sexual language and content of music, where no matter where you live, you are forced to hear it and be exposed to it," Harriott said.
"If people want that kind of sexual entertainment, then it should be confined, so whoever wants it can go there, but you shouldn't involuntarily have to deal with it."
The JCC further said the playing of such songs in public buses and taxis has significantly contributed to the lewd behaviour of many of Jamaica's schoolchildren.
"We have successfully created an appetite for looseness among so many of our children that they innocently and uncritically gobble up every meal of it that is presented," the council said.
Ludicrous
The JCC said it shared a similar concern for other genres of music that are considered inappropriate for the airwaves and public consumption, including soca and calypso.
However, dancehall promoter, Wayne '2gran' Bartley, who is in charge of the popular street dance Dutty Fridays, said he had no problem with the Church calling for a general 'cleaning up' of the music, but that for the organisation to call for a banning of street dances altogether would be ludicrous.
Street dances have become a popular staple in the Jamaican dancehall diet over the years, with a dance fittingly named after every day of the week, including the most popular of the bunch, Passa Passa.
"As far as I am concerned, dancehall is pay-per-view; everybody doesn't have to go to the dancehall, you go there if you want to," Bartley told The Gleaner yesterday. "So, parents should monitor their children as to where they are not to go."
He admitted, however, he was not against any attempt to improve the lyrical content of the present crop of dancehall songs.
Zero-tolerance approach
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Cornwall 'Bigga' Ford, said the police already have a zero-tolerance approach to persons in breach of the Noise Abatement Act, as well as those buses and taxis that sport elaborate tints. He further said the police would continue to stand resolute in enforcing the law.
However, a senior police officer who also spoke to The Gleaner yesterday, but asked not to be named, questioned the approach of the Church.
"I don't understand what they mean by this, because the Church has no control over what happens in the dancehall," the police officer said. "There are people who believe that the Church is disturbing them in their homes too, who don't want to hear the Church."
He continued: "If the persons are in breach of any law, then the police will act accordingly, but you can't ask that the street dance be turned off because you don't like it."
While dancehall is under immense pressure at home, it seems the rest of the world, well at least America for now, continues to embrace our music - edited or not.

Since the leak of the now infamous sex tape involving entertainment and television personality Amelia 'Milk' Sewell the offices of 876radio.com and our mailboxes have been b****arded with emails and phonecalls about when are we going to release the tape for all to see. Due to our code of ethics and listeners/viewers demographic such material will not be placed on our site and therefore we hope that puts the matter to rest. However with the alarming rate at which the content is being transmitted (mainly via bluetooth capable devices) we decided to contact the parties involved to bring some resolve to the matter. Earlier today, Milk who is the host of a popular local television programme was missing in action and that sparked a new round of debate/rumours that she had been fired by the station. When 876radio.com contacted the very distraught sounding hostess she had this to say in her defense. "I was not fired, I am only taking a few days off because I've been undergoing a lot, actually I went to my friend Cathy-Ann Samms-Francis funeral (this is the young lady from Air Jamaica that was killed recently on Red Hills Road) and the following day I received even more bad news that Marc Johnson was strangled and killed at home he was a dear friend to me." When asked if there was anything else she would like to add, she veered into the issue of the sex tape; "Regardless of what people want to think and say, personally I don't care, I am not ashame of what I did, as I have done nothing wrong, what you see is me and my boyfriend engaging in a consensual act between two grown adults in the privacy of our home, so people need to stop sensationalizing it as something taboo, there is nothing on show so they need to stop bluetoothing it all over the place, people need to remember that I have a son in high school, and he may be affected by these things". - she added. |
CITING the use of corporal punishment as one of the reasons for the violence in some schools, Education Minister Andrew Holness on Monday announced that his ministry is in the process of formulating legislation and policies to prohibit such form of punishment in the entire education system.
HOLNESS... Gov't is preaching a message of non-violence |
The minister said in the next revision of the Education Act which is currently being developed, all forms of corporal punishment, violence, as well as all humiliating and aggressive disciplinary measures will be prohibited from Jamaican schools.
"Violence in schools, which is oftentimes legitimised by cultural practices and norms, and endorsed by authority figures in the school and in the home, only reinforces the use of violence in the wider society," he said.
The minister was speaking at the opening of the UNICEF Global Capacity Development Programme on Child Friendly Schools for Latin America and the Caribbean in Ocho Rios, St Ann.
Deputy Representative for UNICEF Jamaica, Nada Marasovic, said that outlawing corporal punishment in all schools will bring them closer to the organisation's goal of ensuring that the school environment becomes more conducive to learning by 2011.
Holness said that by banning corporal punishment in all schools, the Government would be preaching a message of non-violence to young citizens. He says he is not convinced that corporal punishment is effective in promoting good behaviour, but instead leads to aggression, abuse and assault.
While acknowledging the challenge teachers have in dealing with students in the classroom, Holness said that other non-violent methods of discipline needs to be developed. He says a behaviour management strategy document is currently being prepared for schools.
"We will retool and empower our teachers with non-violent, non- aggressive techniques in classroom management, we will help our school principals to develop systems of discipline and behaviour management," he said.
He said that with the assistance of UNICEF, the Government has been able to make Jamaican schools more child-friendly. The organisation launched its Child Friendly School Model in Jamaica earlier this month, and has been helping the ministry with technical assistance, formulating policies and regulations and providing training and public education.
THIS IS A BAD MOVE!!!
A man, who pleaded guilty to stealing toothpaste and a bar of soap, was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment at hard labour when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, yesterday.
Charged with simple larceny is Leroy Smith. The police, however, believe the accused man's real name is Garth Ranger.
The court was told that on the day in question, Smith went to a supermarket and removed two family sized Colgate toothpaste and a bar of Cascade soap. He was held by the security guards who called the police.
When the matter was mentioned, Smith told the court that this was about the third time he was stealing. He said, "this time, the officer lock mi up."
He then attempted to be his own lawyer, asking the judge, "Could I get a fine?".
When that was denied, he tried again. "Could I ask for a suspended sentence?"
Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown then asked him how much time he wanted to spend in custody. After some deliberation, he said 20 days. This was, however, increased to 30 days.
The Muslims out in Malaysia are looking to crush any chances of Rihanna donning scantily clad attire for her concert:
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) The good girl gone bad has promised to be good for one night. R&B sensation Rihanna will shun skimpy outfits when she performs in Malaysia next month, the concerts organizers said Tuesday, becoming the latest international star affected by the Muslim-majority countrys strict rules on performers dress. Recent concerts by Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne faced protests by conservative Muslim Malaysians over immodest clothes. Stefani eventually made what she called a major sacrifice at her show by donning attire that revealed little skin. Under government guidelines, a female performer must be covered from the top of her chest, including her shoulders, to her knees. The organizers of a P**ycat Dolls concert in 2006 were fined nearly $3,000 after the U.S. girl group was accused of flouting decency regulations. The Malaysian organizers of Rihannas Feb. 13 stop on her Good Girl Gone Bad tour voiced hopes that protests would not mar the Grammy-winning singers show. Rihannas management is aware of the countrys regulations and the difficulties of doing a show, Razman Razali, managing director of Pineapple Concerts, told The Associated Press. However, a district branch of the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, which blasted Lavignes on-stage moves as too sexy last year, said in an online commentary that Rihanna was sexier and more dangerous than Lavigne. Concert ticket Web site Axcess said sales for Rihannas show in a 16,000-capacity Kuala Lumpur stadium were selling briskly Tuesday, just hours after newspapers announced the event. Rihanna, 20, has had a slew of hits since bursting onto the music scene in 2005, including Umbrella, Pon de Replay and Unfaithful.
Wow, the Muslims are really acting like Princess Ri-Ris sexy is a W.M.D. Youd think there were bigger issues to address than what lil miss Rihanna will be rockin come next month. At any rate, should she say f*ck it, and get it in however she likes, or abide by social customs?
After this shot was taken, Solange collapsed after downing a bunch of flu pills:
R&B star SOLANGE KNOWLES was admitted to hospital when she collapsed after downing flu pills on a flight out of New York on Tuesday night (17Feb09).
Beyonces younger sister was treated by medics after taking the capsules onboard a plane and suffering an adverse reaction to the medication.
Her muddled mental state was laid bare in a series of bizarre postings on social networking website Twitter.com which she uploaded during the journey.
But three hours into the trip, her messages suddenly stopped after she complained of feeling sleepy - and three hours later she logged back on to the website to tell fans: Woaah Howd I end up in the hospital?
Knowles is believed to have been heading back to her home in Los Angeles after attending the opening of an Armani store in New York on Tuesday evening.
In a series of Twitter postings during the flight, she told fans how she had swallowed NyQuil tablets to treat a cold.
She wrote: I took a nyquil and i think maybe im getting high off it because im not sleeping. maybe i should close my eyes
Minutes later she added, think im certified loosing (sic) it on nyquil. going to sleep before i start freestyling on the plane omg (Oh my God) i didnt know nyquil could do this to you. i took the pills tho. cant stomach cough syrup. trying to be proactive on this flight.
She then added: Never taking nyquil again. I feel so weird.
The singer left further apparently random messages about various musicians and having freezing feet, before a break of three hours.
She then logged on again and wrote: Woaah Howd I end up in the hospital? Woke up to 8 random people over me, laid out on the floor in baggage claim! Guess I passed out! Scary. Hooked up to IV now . Apparantly Im super dehydrated.
Ive never passed out before. S**t was like the movies. People standing over me saying hello My mom is the best. LOL (laugh out loud). Shes like Aint nothing wrong with this girl, she need some water and rest Pull up the car! LOL
Im like still in shock. Ive never passed out before. Think it was the nyquil too. I felt weird when I woke up. This has been the day from hell. Im done with the second IV. I just want to get in the bed and lay with (son) Julez. Thats all I want.
The singer later confirmed she had been released following treatment, writing: Im out! yay! they let me go.. Rest. Water. Rest. Water.
What the hell was she thinking going overboard with the Nyquil. This broad should count her blessings that she came out of this whole thing unharmed. SMH.

Despite having been suspended from Zip FM and taken off front-line duties recently, as well as having been charged for possession of marijuana, things are finally beginning to look up for the popular entertainment personality.
Cool job
she explained that she was hoping to move back to New York by the March 1. She said: "The job with Irie Jams is completely cool. Before I moved here, I had tried doing some work with them and the cool thing about it is that now they are moving to broadcast outside of New York and will be doing a lot of work in Jamaica as well."
Irie Jam Radio, in partnership with Black Emperor Entertainment, delivers Jamaican music to millions of Caribbean nationals living in the United States. The station maintains its #1 position as a Caribbean-American programme, and recently launched a national television programme, Irie TV.
According to Nikki Z, this new job will allow her a number of opportunities to branch into other avenues in music and media and will also allow her to be closer to her family, especially her mother who has been battling with cancer.
Stay connected
Still, the diva says that she will always be connected to Jamaica where she began working over two years ago.
"My hope is to come back to Jamaica like once a month, I love the two places for different reasons, the atmosphere in Jamaica is just so calming, I'll miss that and, of course, my fans. Promoters can definitely still book me to emcee shows and we're working on still trying to keep my voice on ZIP because they are my family regardless of what happened," she said.
The presenter is excited about the opportunity where she will also be working with noted disc jocks such as Java and Dubmaster who work with Irie Jam. She is also currently working on a project with BET Jazz on a pilot project for Real Productions.
"I'm working with them on a show based on different people living different types of lifestyles," she said.
Fans in Jamaica can still hear and see their diva Nikki Z on Irie Jams' website.

SPANISH INVESTMENT amounting to US$1.5 billion (J$129 billion) is expected to flow into the Jamaican economy over the next five years, creating an additional 4,300 rooms in the hotel sector, Prime Minister Bruce Golding said yesterday during a special joint sitting of both houses of Parliament.
The prime minister was making a presentation in Gordon House on the first visit by King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía of Spain to the country.
Over the last 10 years the country has benefited from US$1 billion in Spanish investment with the construction of 10 new hotels adding 5,000 rooms to the sector.
"We have sought to encourage this new wave of investment activity by the establishment of a double-taxation treaty between Jamaica and Spain, which was signed last year and a new air services agreement which will be signed this afternoon (yesterday)," Golding said.
Today, the Spanish Government will officially hand over the newly refurbished wing of the Spanish Town Hospital.
In his comments, the King said his country was one of the leading foreign investors in Jamaica. "Our businesses have come to Jamaica to stay, their success is also Jamaica's success."
Leader of the Opposition, Portia Simpson Miller, hailed the Spanish Government for responding positively to Jamaica's invitation to invest in the country over the last 10 years.

Get a load of Baby Boy Brewer - M.I.A.s little bundle of joy. This chick may be going a little too far to get some freakin air time though. Dig how desperate she is to perform at the Oscars:
New mother M.I.A. is determined to perform at the Oscars on Sunday (22Feb09), just 11 days after giving birth to her first child - even if it means appearing as a hologram.
The singer is booked to take the stage at the ceremony and sing the track she co-wrote with A.R. Rahman for movie Slumdog Millionaire, which is nominated in the Best Song category. Academy bosses recently revealed they had offered the British-born singer a bed to sing from, if she needs to rest after the trauma of delivering her baby son last week.
And Rahman reveals M.I.A. is considering every option, so she can sing O Saya at the Hollywood bash. The songwriter says, Thats the million dollar question. She wants to. In fact, she said shell do it with a hologram. She has all these ideas. I dont know how its going to be possible, though. Having a baby is such an important thing in your life - more important than winning an Oscar.
Apparently M.I.A. may think that the Oscars trump everything. A true sign of an artist who is uncertain of her careers longevity. Btw, those folks at the Oscars better not even dream of letting this broad perform for her hospital bed, gotdammit.
Two of three men charged with warehouse breaking and larceny appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
The third man, who is to face an identification parade, did not appear.
Shane Armstrong and Ronald McKenzie appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown.
The allegations are that the men broke into the warehouse belonging to the complainant and stole a variety of goods valuing $560,000. The men were allegedly seen on camera entering the warehouse and leaving with the items. It is alleged that contact was made with an individual in Majesty Gardens and the goods were returned for a fee of $150,000.
The warehouse was broken into a second time, however, and goods amounting to $800,000 were stolen. All three were arrested and charged.
Armstrong pleaded guilty to the charges on his first appearance while McKenzie said he was innocent and "100 per cent sure" that he was not on the tape.
Armstrong was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment at hard labour. His sentence was suspended for 18 months.
McKenzie was granted $50,000 bail with surety. He is to return to court on March 24.
Dancehall artiste Munga Honourable, whose given name is Damion Rhoden, pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Rhoden appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown.
The court was told that on the day in question, the police searched Rhoden and a small quantity of ganja found. Rhoden was sentenced to pay $200 or serve seven days in jail.
