very little girl dreams about her wedding day, complete with visions of a big beautiful white dress and, of course, the perfect man. But 9-year-old Jayla Cooper doesn't have a lifetime to wait for Mr. Right. The Southlake, TX, girl has been battling leukemia for two years, a battle that could end in just a matter of weeks.

But what Jayla does have is a groom. He's her best friend, Jose Griggs, a fellow patient at Children's Medical Center in Dallas. "He is very cute," Jayla giggled, "And I love him."

Jayla and Jose recently tied the knot to fulfill her final wish: Getting married in a beautiful wedding, surrounded by family and friends.

"Will you take Jose to be your friend, forever and ever?" the pastor asked a tiara-topped Jayla.

"I will," she replied.

jayla-cooper-9-year-old-dream-wedding-couple-250kk.jpg"We didn't expect to do this when she was nine years old," said Lisa Cooper, Jayla's mom. "But she has taught us all how to love each other and to be strong."
The children aren't legally married, of course. In fact, the ceremony itself celebrated their intent -- to always be friends, no matter what.

"Of course I was shocked to find out that her big request would be a wedding, but it was, so that is what she got," Tina Kirkpatrick, a planner with the catering hall, Paradise Cove, told ParentDish. Jayla organized it all, from the colors, menu (chicken enchiladas), cake and song for the father-daughter dance -- "It's Your Love" by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. "She's already on morphine but I have never seen her look so good. She was shimmering."

As for Jose, "He's brighter, happier and more content with all that they go through in the hospital," said his father, Lawrence Griggs. "She changed that, brought it all out [and] opened up a side of him I hadn't seen."

What the Cooper's are facing in the coming weeks is what every parent hopes they'll never have to endure. But when they look back at the video of Jayla and Jose's special day, let's hope they'll find a little comfort in their daughter's smile, beaming bright on her wedding day.

While dancehall is under immense pressure at home, it seems the rest of the world, well at least America for now, continues to embrace our music - edited or not.

Mavado's video for his (edited) Billboard smash So Special will be a freshman's pick on MTVU the week of of February 16-20.

This is a fan-voting opportunity, the video with the most votes automatically gets added to MTVU rotation the following week, so Jamaicans are being asked to support the music and get voting.

MTVU's show, The Freshman, spotlights emerging artistes on air and online, with the chance for one of the videos to get an automatic add into rotation on the channel the following week. Fans can vote on these videos online, starting the Monday morning of the week in question, and votes will commence at the end of the week on Friday at noon and then tabulated.

A So You Move - Mavado

February 19, 2009

Have you heard Mavado's new song lately...entitled a So You Move? It hit out at the government's stance on dancehall music. Irie FM is 'rinsing' it out and right now it's getting a lot of buzz on the streets and people are just talking. Man the singjay went all out on this one and the lyrics are really powerful. Trust me this dancehall, Broadcast Commission debate won't be going away anytime soon.

Hypocrites
Still I have to give my side of the debate in all of this. If you ask me, they are all hypocrites, how dem fi come down on dancehall music and not touching soca and carnival. A don't tink it is right that kids should be wining up and carrying on bad on the streets in skimpy outfits. Not to mention the adults who behave like real old bangarangs. You listen to the lyrics of di Calypso song dem...so what Broadcast Commission say bout dat. On pon top of that on Easter Sunday a cyaan turn on mi TV in peace just through di whole heap a naked people a dagger in the streets...so no more a those tings come Easter...a hope suh.

Red Stripe wheel and come again big time
Red Stripe launched Diageo Learning For Life - Project Artiste on Wednesday at the Heart School of Cosmetology. It's a big move to be taking raw talent - 40 participants to be exact and working with them. Training them and guiding them to deal with the whole business of music. In my books they have totally redeemed themselves.

BET have reversed their last minute decision to pull the airing of Mavado's "So Special" video from its flagship 106 & Park show, and have now confirmed they will be airing the video as "New Joint of the Week" this coming Tuesday, March 3rd.

"In some ways the timing worked out even better!" said manager Julian Jones-Griffith. "Mavado's album Mr Brooks - A Better Tomorrow is released on March 3rd, the same day the video will air, so hopefully it will give it that extra push."

BET's decision to pull the So Special video after advertising it's airing irked fans around the world, many of whom skipped work early and cancelled appointments to tune into the show, only to be disappointed.

After much back and forth and re-editing the video has now been accepted by the top bra** at BET and passed for inclusion in Tuesday's 106 & Park.

The Jamaica Public Service Company in a release earlier this week said it would be spending more than $800 million to c****at electricity theft this year.

The company said most of the funds will be used in the expansion of projects such as the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project, and the creation of Theft Resistant Networks, both aimed at eliminating the losses associated with the crime.

In the release, the company said it began deploying its AMI smart meters among large commercial and industrial customers, who account for approximately 50 per cent of all energy consumption served by the company last year. It continued that these meters provided "increased billing efficiency, better demand management - more timely power-outage detection and restoration." The meters are said to also make the job of detecting meter tampering easier.

More than two-thirds of the company's 7,000 large commercial and industrial customers will have had AMI smart meters installed by the end of 2009. The others will be provided with the AMI meters by December 2010.

The release said that theft-resistant networks were being implemented in an effort to address the problem of losses among residential customers.

The network involves the replacement of power lines with insulated conductors, which makes it more difficult for persons to throw up illegal lines to connect to the electricity grid.

IN THE context of Jamaican gangland feuds, hostility between Brooke Avenue and Sherlock Crescent is as old as the hills. But five years ago, residents from the fractious Duhaney Park neighbourhoods called a truce that holds to this day.

That 'peace treaty' ended 15 years of violence that resulted in several murders, making Duhaney Park one of the most violent communities in the St Andrew South police division.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Clyde Talbot, is commanding officer at the Duhaney Park precinct. He stated that communication between residents and the police has helped keep the peace.

Strong relationship

"We have developed a strong relationship with the community, so if there is any hint of escalation (in crime) they call us or the PMI (Peace Management Initiative) and it is dealt with," DSP Talbot said.

The 33-year Jamaica Constabulary Force veteran says a team from his office meets weekly with the Duhaney Park Citizens' Association, and monthly with the community's peace and development committee.

Various issues, from improving utility services to granting permits for dances, are discussed at these meetings. The Duhaney Park Police Youth Club, Talbot said, also meets weekly at his office.

Duhaney Park is one of several low-income housing schemes built during the 1970s by the government of prime minister, Michael Manley. During the 1980s, heavily-armed gangs, associating themselves with the People's National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JAP), kept the St Andrew South police on their toes.

Brooke Avenue is home to a strong PNP base, while Sherlock Crescent is known to support the JAP. Talbot says gangs from neighbouring New Haven, which have allegiance to both parties, were also involved in criminal activity in Duhaney Park.

Last year, a series of rapes in Duhaney Park threatened to disrupt the peace. Talbot says a man implicated in most of those assaults was recently arrested and is facing rape and assault charges.

Kanye West, Bonnaroo FestivalJeff Kravitz/Getty Images

VH1 is busy giving Kanye West a good edit job.

On Feb. 13, the hip-hopper taped an episode of the channel's Storytellers, in which he performs songs and talks about them. Not surprisingly, the outspoken star broached topics that weren't exactly music-related during the three-hour shoot.

"Can't we give Chris [Brown] a break?" he said, contradicting earlier statements he's made about the R&B singer's alleged altercation with girlfriend Rihanna. "I know I make mistakes in life."

Executive producer Bill Flanagan tells Reuters that some of the "choicier" comments and "gotcha moments" that didn't fit with the program were eliminated. "A lot of the stories that Kanye told went long," he says. "I tried to get the essence of his comments."

For example, West told the audience at Sony Studios in Los Angeles that he sees Radiohead as one of his biggest creative rivals and was "hurt" when frontman Thom Yorke supposedly snubbed him backstage at the Grammys.

"So when he performed at the Grammys, I sat the f--k down," West said.

Tidbits about the aforementioned British band and the Chris Brown and Rihanna debacle weren't the only celeb statements to wind up on the cutting room floor. Yeezy also shared his thoughts on Michael Phelps, Michael Jackson and O.J. Simpson.

Anger made me beat Luciano

Luciano

Studio engineer Freckles said that it was more than 10 years of pent-up frustration that caused him to attack and beat Rastafarian singer Luciano with a piece of metal pipe last week.

Friday at a gas station on Dunrobin Avenue, St Andrew, producer, songwriter and booking agent Freckles took a piece of iron and repeatedly beat singer Luciano, whose real name is Jepther McClymont, in retaliation for what he claims was an incident that took place in August 1998.

Police have confirmed hearing about the incident, but could not give any details.

Efforts to reach Luciano were unsuccessful. His booking agent confirmed that the singer had been attacked but she did not want to give details about the incident.

When the STAR spoke with Freckles, he explained what led to Friday's incident that is now being investigated by the police.

'Bad-mouthing'

Freckles said his pent-up anger at Luciano has been brewing since he assisted some Australian promoters to book the artiste for a tour. Money issues arose from the incident. After leaving Australia, Freckles said he heard that Luciano was 'bad-mouthing' him and continued to do so on his return to Jamaica.

Upon returning to Jamaica, Freckles said the two spoke and discussed the issue and agreed to meet at Luciano's office. Upon meeting with Luciano, a fracas ensued and Freckles claims that he was chopped by another individual who was present.

The booking agent also declined to comment on the allegations made by Freckles.

Doing physiotheraphy

The incident, Freckles said, was reported to the police, but no legal action was taken. Since then, he said, he and Luciano have not spoken and he has suffered in silence. "I still going into the hospital doing physiotheraphy. Mi nuh have propa use of ma hand since up to now mi still owe the hospital money. I needed to get my dignity back..."

For Freckles, his built-up frustration over the years and persons telling him that he should retaliate led to Friday's attack after a friend spoke to him. He said, "Five minutes afta we a talk bout it, I pass a gas station and see Luciano and him friends a laugh. Mi stop and was walking to him and see a pipe iron and took it up, I did what I did. I hit him a couple of times, him friend dem run weh and is Horace Andy haffi hold me and I stop, mi never run."

According to Freckles, he has heard rumours that people are looking for him for retaliation, but he is adamant that he will not be hiding.
Lil Wayne Rock Album
When youre a bonafide star, you pretty much get your way. Unless of course your way could possibly get in the way of the cash flow that is.

Recently it was announced that Lil Waynes rock album, Rebirth, had been pushed back from April 7th to May 9th.
He announced his plans to do an entire rock n roll album in addition to the release of the Carter V early this year, much to the surprise of his loyal fans who are used to hearing him stick to rapping.
Well now word is that this was not just a standard push back but a direct signal from Waynes record label, Universal, that they are not rocking with him on this project.

The Carter III was the top selling album of the year and pretty much Universal Musics cash cow of last year. They want to do everything to keep Wayne in the top position he is in right now and avoid anything that could knock him from that spot.

Word is the top bra** at Universal think that this rock album would be a failure and would make the rap world look at Wayne even more sideways than most of us already do. People reports top execs at Universal have tried to talk to Wayne several times and explain to him that this album is not a reality, but of course those convos are to no avail.

Word is that they let his manager, Cortez Bryant, know that if Wayne doesnt brighten up they have to turn into Mr. Evil Record Company and just tell him its never going to be released.

Mavado was recently invited to the wedding of Melky Jean, sister of Wyclef, and her husband, Supreme.

The lavish affair was held at an exclusive resort in South Florida this past weekend and was a wonderful occasion.

So special

Mavado and Clef have been friends for a few years, with Clef often referring to Mavado as his brother. They have recorded several tracks together and will continue to do so in the near future. Mavado is Melky's favourite artiste and all insisted he attend the wedding as a 'so special' guest.

Melky is an artiste in her own right, as well as a Grammy-nominated songwriter.

Mavado went on to give great performances at two sold-out shows in Orlando and Tampa the same weekend.

With BET clamouring for the video to Mavado's Billboard smash, So Special, it is slated to premiere as the new joint on 106 & Park soon.

Mavado also has a promotional appearance in Manhattan this month alongside Hot 97's iconic disc jockey, Funkmaster Flex.

Meeting Vybz Kartel has helped to change upcoming artiste Jah Vinci's musical path in a positive way.

The 20-year-old singer, whose real name is André Kirk Rhoden, said since meeting Vybz Kartel early this year, he has been getting more recognition in the dancehall industry.

"Somebody tell mi seh di Teacha (Vybz Kartel) hear 'bout mi and him seh him a go carry mi 'round there. And when mi do a song fi di Teacha, him seh him a go mek mi buss before the year done," Jah Vinci told THE STAR.

"Since mi meet di Teacha, a him a push mi career. A him a do most a di work fi mi. And him a di first one fi bring mi pon a tour (in Switzerland)."

Jah Vinci is signed to Portmore Empire and has been doing several tracks with Vybz Kartel, the most popular among them being Weh Dem A Guh.

This single has helped to give Jah Vinci increased recognition in the dancehall, even though some people believe he sounds like fellow Portmore Empire artiste Blak Ryno.

No rift

While Jah Vinci admits that the song has some elements of Blak Ryno's style, he says there is no rift between them.

"I have my own style, but everybody seh it sound like Blak Ryno, but I don't really see it. Maybe the type of song mek it sound like his style, but mi do mi thing different," said the artiste who recorded mostly cultural songs with 357 Records before meeting his 'Teacha'.

"There is no beef between us. Blak Ryno love the song. Is just one (Portmore) Empire. Teacha head it and we are like his kids. Him do him thing, and me do my thing," Jah Vinci said.

Jah Vinci has done at least 10 other songs as part of Portmore Empire, including Haffi Mek A Stroll (with Vybz Kartel and Blak Ryno) and Fling Some Love Inna Yuh Soul. His next release will be a TOK-produced track called Middle Day.

He says his career is improving and he has high aspirations.

"Mi nah face no difficulty right now. Everything weh mi dream 'bout a come true. Mi used to wonder how mi a go get pon a show or how mi a go go certain studio. Mi nah fi worry 'bout how mi a go find the next meal 'cause a whole heap a thing a happen," he said. "Now, for me, it's just to get rich, take care of my family and help who I can help."

UWI student escapes custodial sentence

February 27, 2009
Started By Garrick6 Comments

A final year student at the University of the West Indies escaped a custodial sentence in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to drug charges.

The 23-year-old philosophy and history major was charged with possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export marijuana.

The court was told that on the day in question, the accused was preparing to board a flight to Barbados, when the weed, weighing 0.7kg (1.5lb) was found on his person.

A lawyer representing the accused told the court that the student was set to graduate in November and was well on his way to completing his studies. He said the boy's move was "foolish" and begged Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown to impose a non-custodial sentence. He at first asked the judge to request a social enquiry report, but this was refused.

School fees

He said the accused attempted to export the drug so he could help with his school fees and other expenses. He said he was going to Barbados to meet up with some Barbadian friends he met at school.

Before handing down the sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown told the accused that he was only sparing him from jail because of the quantity of the drug. He was sentenced to pay $2,000 or serve three months for possession, admonished and discharged for dealing in drugs and ordered to pay $10,000 or serve three months for taking steps to export the drug.

A 15-YEAR-old schoolgirl in northeast England earned about Ł14,000 ($US20,000) over two months by working as a prostitute. Her unusual weekend job was exposed when a teacher at her school in South Shields, near Newcastle, found condoms, lubricant and details of the agency she worked for in her school bag.
Police officers who searched her home found more than Ł8000 ($11,500) stashed in the attic in November last year. The girl, who cannot be named because she is a minor, is thought to have netted around $2,500 every weekend.

Details of the case emerged during a hearing at South Tyneside Magistrates Court on February 13 to decide what should happen to the cash.

Asa Anderson, representing Northumbria Police, told the hearing: "The money was seized after police received a phone call from a school where a teacher found a pupil's bag. The bag was found containing certain items."

The court decided the cash should be forfeited to the authorities.

Police said a man aged 44 and a woman aged 46 were arrested on suspicion of inciting child prostitution, but later released facing no further action. The schoolgirl herself is not thought to be facing any charges.

Decomposing body found, two in custody

The decomposing body that police removed from an open lot in Havendale, St Andrew, on Thursday morning, has been positively identified as that of 22-year-old Dane Harris of a Portmore, St Catherine, address.

Two men have since been taken into custody in relation to the gruesome find.

Crime chief for the St Andrew North Police, Deputy Superintendent Altemorth Campbell, said residents called the police to the premises in Kingston 19 about 10 a.m. after discovering the body.

The policeman stated that a post-mortem revealed that the body had multiple stab wounds. Both hands were also missing from the body.

The men in custody are expected to be charged next week.

Police from the St Andrew North division yesterday confirmed reports that thugs had broken into Television Jamaica's (TVJ) Coopers Hill transmitter facility and stolen petrol and piece of equipment necessary for the functioning of the plant.

A police source said the incident took place about 3 a.m., when the hoodlums gained entry to the unsecured facility and carried out their criminal act.

Channel 7

Further details reaching the newspaper are that residents served by Channel 7 have not been able to view TVJ since the theft yesterday morning.

Attempts to get a comment from the RJR Communications Group were unsuccessful. The newspaper was informed that engineers were assessing the extent of the damage. Further notices regarding the restoration of service to the affected areas will follow this assessment.

The Red Hills police are investigating.

On November 2, Wayne Burdick was aboard a cruise ship in Miami waiting to depart on a Caribbean cruise. While still docked at the port, he set up his laptop and wireless card and accessed his Slingbox device which allowed him to watch a Chicago Bears game via an Internet connection. When the game was over, Burdick closed his computer, embarked on the cruise and returned home to find a bill from AT&T charging him over $27,000 for the three hours of Internet usage.

Apparently, AT&T had charged Brudick the international rate for the access. At two cents per kilobyte, the total charge was $27,788.93 for the time spent watching the game, which breaks down to about $6,500 per Rex Grossman interception.

Burdick pled his case to AT&T, saying he was still at the port and not in roaming territory. After speaking with nearly a half-dozen people at the company, he managed to get the bill down to $6,000, even though he provided documentation that he was still technically in Miami at the time he used his wireless card.

Eventually, the whole matter was settled after Burdick contacted Team Fixer at the Chicago Sun-Times and they contacted the phone company. AT&T acknowledged its mistake, saying that Burdick's device was picking up a signal it shouldn't have been.

At least Burdick's efforts were worth it. The Bears beat the Lions that afternoon, 27-23.

A mother languishes in jail, while her son, who she allegedly help to escape from a murder scene, remains at large.

Charged with aiding and abetting murder and accessory after the fact is Debbie Myers, 45, of Michelle Crescent in Edgewater, Portmore, St Catherine.

Myers, who appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Court, on Tuesday, was remanded by Resident Magistrate Simone Maddix.

The court was told that Myers son Carl 'Brown Bwoy' Pinnock, had a dispute with Cornelius Greene along Michelle Crescent about 5:30 p.m. on Monday, February 2. The court heard that Pinnock left and returned with a gun and shot Greene who later died in hospital.

Investigators are contending that Myers then took her son away in a vehicle and that he has not being seen since.

The police subsequently charged the mother who is being representing by attorney-at-law Tom Tavares-Finson.

While the case was being mentioned, relatives of Greene who were presented in court had to be supported as they almost fainted.

Interior decorator gets bail

An interior decorator who was charged with causing the death of a man along the Lilliput main road in St James was granted bail when he appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Marcel Anderson, 26, of Falmouth, Trelawny, was charged with vehicular manslaughter stemming from the February 17 accident, which claimed the life of Daniel Harvey, who was assisting in weeding bush along the roadway. Another man was also injured during the incident.

Ill-fated accident

During an application for bail, defence attorney Earnest Smith said contrary to reports that speeding might have caused the ill-fated accident, it was another driver who was trying to overtake when he hit Anderson's car, causing it to hit the embankment. Smith told Resident Magistrate Winsome Henry that Anderson's vehicle overturned, hitting the man. He said his client assisted in getting the man to hospital before making a report to the police.

Anderson was offered $500,000 bail under condition that he reports to the Falmouth Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. RM Henry also ordered that the investigating officer, who was absent, collect the relevant statements necessary to answer the question as to what was the real cause of the accident.

Speeding

Based on a witness' statement, it is alleged that on February 17 Harvey and other persons were carrying out beautification works along the Lilliput main road when a car driven by the accused was seen speeding on the embankment in the direction of Harvey. The car drove on to the roadway after hitting Harvey and another man. The injured men were rushed to the MoBay Hope hospital and Harvey was later transferred to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The court is awaiting a post mortem, a scene of crime report, the investigating officer's and witness' statements. The case is scheduled for mention on March 27.

Man attacked, murdered by thugs

A man who police say was trying to preserve his girlfriend's dignity was attacked and murdered by a group of thugs in downtown Montego Bay Wednesday morning.

Kirk Barrett, 27, a labourer of Rose Heights, St James, is dead while police are searching the city to locate the gang members who committed the crime. Police are also seeking the public's assistance in solving the crime.

Inappropriate manner

Police say Barrett and his girlfriend were standing along Harbour Street about 5:30 a.m. when they were approached by a group of thugs.

Police say the men attempted to touch his girlfriend in an inappropriate manner to which she objected. The men continued to make improper advances towards her and Barrett intervened and asked that they desist.

Heated argument

The men became enraged and brandished knives. A heated argument developed and Barrett was stabbed in the chest. He ran from the scene but collapsed shortly after. He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police could not confirm, up to press time yesterday, whether Barrett's female friend had been hurt. Her identity was not released for security reasons.

The incident drew a large crowd along Market and Harbour Streets, as passers-by converged to see what had happened. No one was held in connection with the crime up to late Wednesday evening.

Obeah, rape - accused gets bail

Started By Garrick7 Comments

Two men implicated in the obeah-rape saga involving some five females ages 18 - 22 years, were granted bail of $500,000, and $100,000, respectively, when the case reappeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Restricted

Hughroy Hylton, the alleged ringleader, was granted $500,000 bail on the condition that he was restricted to his place of residence, except to seek medical attention. His brother, Holford, was granted $100,000 bail. A third accused, Norman Rowe, was granted $100,000 bail at a previous hearing.

Allegations are that Hughroy, who is charged with human trafficking, abduction, dealing in obeah, conspiracy to rape, rape and practising obeah, lured the women to his house under the guise that he was an obeah man who could protect them from danger. Hylton reportedly told them that they were in danger.

Crystal ball

The complainant who made the report against the men allegedly met Hylton in Westmoreland, where he told her that he had seen in his crystal ball that her life was in danger. She was told to accompany him to his house in Spanish Town where she saw four other women.

It is alleged that Hughroy, Rowe and another man had sex with the women. Hughroy was arrested last December.

Occult books

Police say that over a dozen satanic and occult books were taken from his premises along with other obeah paraphernalia. Holford and Rowe were subsequently arrested and charged with rape and conspiracy to rape. A May 6 mention date was set for the matter, as the medical report was still outstanding.

Moffett suffered bleeding in the brain, broken bones, a dislocated shoulder and a possible ruptured spleen. He was in serious but stable condition Wednesday.

The Colorado State Patrol issued the citation. Trooper Ryan Sullivan said that despite Moffett's intentions, jaywalking contributed to the accident.

Moffett had been driving his bus when the two women got off. In the interest of safety, he got out and, together with another passenger, helped the ladies cross.

Moffett's stepson, Ken McDonald, said the driver of the pickup plowed into his stepfather, but not before Moffett pushed the two women out of the way.

When he awoke in intensive care, he learned of the ticket. "His reaction was dazed and confused. I was a little angry," said McDonald.

The other man also was cited for jaywalking, while the pickup driver was cited with careless driving that led to injury. Sullivan said the two elderly women haven't been cited but the investigation is ongoing.

Woman on fraud charge returns to court

Renee Grey, accused of the fraudulent conversion of some $400,000 last year, yesterday had her bail extended until March 30 in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Purchase

Allegations are that the complainant, who lives in New Zealand, gave Grey $420,000 for the purchase of some cellular phones in October. However, the complainant is yet to receive the goods.

When the matter was first mentioned last December, Grey's attorney told the court that in filling the complainant's order for the phones, his client had to procure the services of a third party. That third party, the lawyer said, had made off with cash paid over to him without delivering the phones, leaving Grey in a tight spot.

The attorney continued that after the incident, his client had repaid more than $100,000 that was left back from the sum she had been given.

Grey also handed over an additional $150,000 yesterday.

A man, who was fired from his job at the Caribbean Cement Company and banned from going there, was charged with office-breaking a few months after he was seen there and removed by security guards.

Clive Locke appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday to answer the charge.

Allegations read in court are that on October 20 last year, about 1 a.m., a security guard found Locke and two men in an office at the cement company. He was taken into custody and released. Locke, who was an employee at the company, was fired February last year and banned from being on the premises since then.

However, he was seen again on February 5 and taken into police custody and charged with office- breaking and larceny.

Locke's attorney told the court that his client went to the grounds to see a contractor about some work and that was when he was seen and slapped with a charge based on what took place in October. The attorney also said the police were trying to pin an old charge on his client. Locke was remanded until February 23, when the matter should be mentioned again.

Landscaper sentenced for carnal abuse

The honest belief of landscaper Christopher Hibbert, 38, of Erald Avenue, Kingston 11, that his 14-year-old lover was 18, did not assist him in his defence before the jury.

It, however, assisted him on Friday in sentencing as the judge described his case as "unfortunate." She sentenced him to three years' imprisonment at hard labour but suspended the sentence for three years after the jury found him guilty of carnal abuse.

Impassioned plea

Supreme Court Judge Paulette Williams, in giving Hibbert a suspended sentence following an impassioned plea by defence lawyer Lloyd McFarlane, told Hibbert that if he were convicted of any offence within the next three years, he would have to serve the three-year prison term.

The Crown, represented by Crown Counsel Sharon Milwood-Moore, led evidence that in April 2008, Hibbert had sexual intercourse with the girl.

The complainant, who is now 15, admitted in court that she told the accused that she was 18. She said she was from Portland but she had run away from home because she and her mother were not getting along and she was frustrated with her.

In her testimony in the Home Circuit Court, the girl told the seven-member jury that after she left Portland she and her friend went to a nightclub in Kingston.

She said although the club had an age restriction, she was admitted into the club. After she left the club, she said she went to Waltham Park Road, Kingston 11, where she was introduced to Hibbert. They became intimate and she began living with him.

A report was made to the police that the girl was missing. The girl's photograph was subsequently published and that resulted in the girl being found.

Age restrictions

Defence lawyer Lloyd McFarlane made a no-case submission at the end of the Crown's case. He asked the judge not to send the case to the jury because Hibbert honestly believed the girl was 18 when she told him her age. He also referred to the fact that the girl was allowed to go into a club which had age restrictions.

The judge said there was no basis in law to withdraw the case from the jury.

Hibbert said in his defence that if he knew that the girl was 14 at the time when he met her, he would not have been intimate with her.

McFarlane, in his mitigation plea, asked the judge to give Hibbert the benefit of the doubt that he honestly believed that the girl was 18.

Teen accused of murder granted bail

A St Catherine teen accused of stabbing a girl to death was granted bail in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

Andrenette Deer, 19, of Gregory Park in Portmore, appeared before Resident Magistrate Caylis Wiltshire.

Allegations are that on February 11, she went to visit a male friend with whom she had a relationship. While there a dispute developed between her and Shamoy Montaque.

Chased

The court heard that Deer was chased by Montaque, who was armed with a machete. Deer then picked up a knife from a stall, which she used to stab Montaque on her thigh. The injured girl was rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital, where she died. A relative later turned the accused over to the police.

Defence attorney Sean Kinghorn, in applying for bail, told the court his client acted in self-defence, as she was being chased. He said Deer was not a flight risk and if granted bail, would turn up for her trial.

The Crown did not oppose bail, which was granted in the sum of $150,000 on condition that Deer return to court on March 13.

One man was shot dead and three others injured at a boat party being held aboard the Caribbean Queen yesterday morning. The boat was docked at the fishing village along Port Royal Street, Kingston, at the time of the incident.

A barrage of bullets brought the session to its premature end. When the gunfire ended, one man lay dead, a few metres away from the boat, two were nursing gunshot wounds and several others had minor injures after a mad rush for safety.

"The promoter charge $1,000, but that never stop people and the boat did too full fi move, so wi just party same place," a patron said yesterday morning, a short while after 30-year-old Mario Mullings was fatally shot.

Stabbed several times

According to the patron, the fact that the boat was not going to cruise the harbour disappointed persons, but with two of the island's major sound systems playing, the party continued on the vessel and the dock until shortly after 5 a.m. when a dispute developed.

Reports are that about 5:25 a.m., Mullings was at the party at the fishing village when a dispute developed between two patrons. Mullings and another man intervened. One of the injured men also intervened but was reportedly stabbed several times by Mullings and the other man.

A policeman, who was at the party, also intervened but was attacked by Mullings and his crony. The lawman pulled his service pistol and opened fire. Mullings and two other patrons were hit. The four injured men were taken to hospital where Mullings died while being treated and the others were admitted.

A patron at the scene also gave THE STAR a similar account. "It look like a man and woman have an argument. Mario get involved and the woman start to disrespect him. Next thing me know, me see Mario with a knife. A nuff shot start fire. Me just run behind the boat and dive pon me belly."

The owner of one of the sound systems, which played at the party, expressed regret at the tragedy.

He said it could have been avoided if promoters had continued his practice of searching persons and preventing those with weapons from boarding the boat.

Up to late yesterday, detectives were still trying to track down persons who had been on the boat.

The Rose Hall Main road in Montego Bay has been in recent times plagued with motor vehicle accidents, and yet another motorist is facing the courts for manslaughter, after a fatal accident along that roadway.

Donald Davis, 46, a plumber of Rosemount, St James, appeared before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to answer to a charge of manslaughter.

Standing on median

He was charged on February 21, four days after his car fatally hit Christopher Scott, 35, of Salt Spring, St James, who was standing on a median on the main road. The accident came a day after another man, Daniel Harvey, was fatally hit by a motorist along the Lilliput main road in the parish.

Davis, who attended court sporting a bandage around his head, also sustained injuries during the accident.

Allegations are that on February 18, about 8:45 a.m., Davis was driving along the road when, during an attempt to switch lanes, he collided with another vehicle, before hitting Scott. Davis then allegedly hit a bus travelling in the opposite direction.

The investigating officer, who was close by, heard screeching tyres and was quick on the scene. Scott, who was thrown several feet in the air, was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead.

Speeding

Attorney-at-law Natalie Messado, who applied for bail, said that Davis was quite distraught about the incident, but never tried to switch lanes on the day in question. She said that another motorist had slammed into the back of Davis' car. However, the investigating officer said there no damage observed to the rear of Davis' vehicle. He said that speeding was the cause of the accident.

Davis was granted bail in the sum of $750,000 and is scheduled to return to court on March 31.

The accident came a day after another man, Daniel Harvey, was fatally hit by a motorist along the Lilliput main road in the parish.

A woman police attached to the Jamaica Constabulary Force's statistics department is today counting her blessings after a nasty traffic accident with a garbage truck on Marcus Garvey Drive in St Andrew yesterday.

Eyewitnesses told this newspaper that the woman police's private car was sent rolling after it was hit from behind by the garbage truck. They say she was driving along the dual carriage way towards Portmore, St Catherine, when she slowed down to negotiate a bump in the road and was hit by the truck. She lost control of the car, which spun over, and had its front section crushed by the truck.

The condition of the policewoman's car had onlookers fearing the worst as the vehicle was transformed into a giant metal ball. THE STAR has since learnt that the woman was taken to the Andrews Memorial Hospital where she is being treated.

A man on a murder charge who is also accused of threatening a Crown witness denied the allegation in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The court was told that Dave McFarlane threatened the witness, who is to testify against him in the murder case. It is alleged that he tried to dissuade her from giving evidence against him.

The witness, the court was told, is the mother of the accused man's child. McFarlane was denied bail after the Crown told the court that it is believed that he will further interfere with the witness and possibly the case.

The matter is to be mentioned today in the Gun Court where his murder case will also be heard.

A man accused of destroying another man's car, told the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court that the car was damaged while he was in the process of parting a fight.

Wayne Savage appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown yesterday to answer to a charge of malicious destruction of property.

Savage pleaded guilty with explanation.

The complainant told the court that the accused and another man were fighting and the accused ran on to his car, sinking some parts of it.

The accused, however, told the court that he was not fighting, but was parting a fight. He, however, admitted responsibility and told the court that he was willing to repay the complainant. The complainant, however, outlined that he did not want several persons working on his car and wanted to choose the mechanic.

Savage is to return to court with the money on March 31.

Detectives from the Montego Bay Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said that formal charges are expected to be brought against the vice-principal implicated in a fatal stabbing in John's Hall, St James, next week.

Earlier this week, Michelle Brown, 35, an educator at John's Hall All- Age School, was taken into custody following the fatal stabbing of her 46-year-old husband, Junior, during a domestic dispute.

Police reports following the incident stated that a knife was used to inflict a fatal wound to the man's chest while both were having an argument on Sunday.

Brown and her husband had been together for more than 10 years and have two children. She has been at the John's Hall All-Age School in the community for more than eight years.

While members of the community claimed she had complained about being beaten by her husband in the past, a police officer attached to the John's Hall Police Station stated that there were no earlier reports of abuse filed by Mrs Brown.

'DJ Avalanche' among suspects in Jan. 5 robbery of reggae star
By FIONA STOKES
Saturday, January 17th 2009

ST. CROIX - The men who police said are responsible for the Jan. 5, armed robbery of Jamaican reggae artist Craig "Serani" Marsh, were advised of their rights in V.I. Superior Court on St. Croix on Friday morning.

Richard Motta, 50, of Little Hospital Street, Christiansted, and Gregory "DJ Avalanche" Hodge, 29, of Tutu High-rise, St. Thomas, remain in jail unable to post bail on charges of first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence and grand larceny.

Motta was arrested at 5 p.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas' King Airport as he attempted to leave the territory. Motta was detected by Customs and Enforcement Officers as a person with an outstanding warrant issued by Superior Court Judge Julio Brady.

Hodge, who works as a disc jockey at FM 105.1, was arrested shortly after he ended his shift at 10 a.m. Thursday.

A 14-count information has been filed charging both men with the crimes and with aiding and abetting each other in the crimes.

According to an affidavit filed in Superior Court by Police Detective Jeffrey Nesbitt, Marsh told police that he had just finished a performance in the Crucian Christmas Festival Village and was dropped off along with two other people by the promoter on the street outside the Best Western Hotel.

As they approached the room, Marsh said, two masked men pointed a gun at them and demanded their money and jewelry. The men took his King Link gold chain and pendant, valued at about $5,000, as well as two cellular phones.

Police said Marsh's companion, who is not named but is described as Marsh's manager in the affidavit, said the gunmen took a $5,000 chain from him and $9,700 in cash.

The third victim said that as they were dropped off and walked to the room, two men who she recognized as Hodge and Motta, walked past them in the opposite direction, and as they proceeded to the room they turned around just as Motta was pulling a mask over his face and then the two men proceeded to rob them.

She said that while robbing them, Motta threatened to murder Marsh but was discouraged by Hodge and the two left.

All three victims picked the two men out of a photo array produced by police.

Police said no one was injured in the robbery.

Police reported over the past weeks that hey were aggressively following up on leads and secured the warrants for the two men. They said more arrests may be pending.

Bail for Hodge and Motta was set at $135,000 each, and both remain jailed pending a bail hearing at 9 a.m. today.

Hodge has no known criminal record in the territory, but Motta has an extensive criminal history with more than 25 arrests during the last 30 years. He previously has been charged with crimes including assault, murder, robbery, gun possession, weapon possession, grand larceny, rape and vehicle tampering and trespassing.

Violence between repo men, car owners on the rise

HALSELL, Ala. Alone in his mobile home off a winding dirt road, Jimmy Tanks heard a commotion at 2:30 a.m. just outside his bedroom window: Somebody was messing with his car.

The 67-year-old railroad retiree grabbed a gun, walked out the back door and confronted not a thief but a repo man and two helpers trying to tow off the Chrysler Sebring. Shots were fired, and Tanks wound up dead, a bullet in his chest.

The man who came to repossess the car, Kenneth Alvin Smith, is awaiting trial on a murder charge in a state considered a Wild West territory even by the standards of an industry that's largely unregulated nationally. Since Tanks' death last June, two other repo men from the same company Smith worked for were shot, one fatally.

"It's gotten to where it's a crazy world out there," said Smith, 50, an ex-Marine who preaches part-time and sings gospel music. Smith said Thursday that he fired in self-defense after Tanks fired a shot.

With the U.S. dealing with an economic slide that has cost millions of jobs, the number of vehicle repossessions is expected to rise 5 percent this year. That's after it jumped 12 percent to 1.67 million nationally in 2008, said Tom Webb, chief economist with Manheim Consulting, an automotive marketing firm. That followed a 9 percent increase in 2007, creating more opportunities for bad outcomes in an industry where armed confrontations and threats happen every day.

Joe Taylor, whose Florida-based company insures repossession companies, said licensing and training is the answer to avoiding such violence.

"If a guy is just put right on the street without training, the potential for violence is very, very high," said Taylor, who runs Insurance Services USA.

Federal law says workers can't "breach the peace" while repossessing items, but it doesn't go further to state just what that means, leaving definitions up to courts.

All three Alabama shootings were in the middle of the night, which an industry leader said was a sign of a problem.

"The smart operators aren't out there at 2 or 3 o'clock at night with people who can put you in a bad situation," said Les McCook, executive director of the American Recovery Association, a trade group for repossession companies.

It was June 26 that the repo man came for Tanks' car in Halsell, a tiny, rural Choctaw County town near the Mississippi line. Tanks already had filed for bankruptcy and was behind on his payments, court documents show.

Tanks heard a noise and went outside with a gun, something anybody would do, said Choctaw County Sheriff James Lovette, who knew Tanks for years. Smith was indicted Tuesday, but no charges were filed against a man and his teenage son who accompanied Smith, said Lovette.

Smith's defense lawyer, Rusty Wright, said Tanks came out of the trailer and fired, and that Smith "just wanted to stop him."

"This is not the gunslinging cowboy that people think about with repo guys," Wright said. "(Smith) wasn't out to kill the guy."

The sheriff declined comment on whether Tanks shot at Smith.

Lovette said Smith worked out of Birmingham with Ascension Recovery, a subsidiary of the Chicago-based Renovo Services. The same recovery firm employed a repo man who was shot and killed on Jan. 8 in Birmingham, as well as a third worker who was wounded while towing a vehicle in the city on Feb. 10.

The CEO of Renovo Services, David Cowlbeck, didn't respond to questions sent by e-mail about the fatal shootings. He called the unsolved February wounding of 30-year-old Jason Williamson "a random act of violence."

"We trust that the perpetrators are quickly apprehended and charged accordingly," Cowlbeck said in a statement.

Lovette is asking the Alabama Sheriff's Association to push a bill limiting the hours when repossession companies can operate and requiring them to contact local law enforcement before working in an area.

"There's a time and place for everything, and 3 a.m. is not it," said Lovette.

The three states that actively license and monitor recovery agents California, Florida and Louisiana report less violence than other states, Taylor said. But most state legislatures aren't interested in repossession law until people start dying, he said.

"You don't find many state legislators who have had a car repossessed. They are just unfamiliar with that world," said Taylor.

Tanks was killed just two weeks after he married Georgia Tanks, who keeps a floral spray at the spot where he died beside the car, which is long gone. She wasn't at home the night he was killed because she was away teaching Vacation Bible School in nearby Meridian, Miss. She has filed a wrongful death suit in the slaying.

"It's senseless," she said, wiping away tears as she looked at their wedding photograph. "The legal stuff I don't know anything about. I just know God is going to let justice be done."

Smith, too, is haunted by what happened that night.

"I've played it through in my mind a million times to see if I could have done something different," he said. "I couldn't have."

Police make major marijuana raids in N.B.

Updated Thu. Sep. 15 2005 11:33 PM ET

Canadian Press

FREDERICTON -- Police in New Brunswick say the seizure of more than 40,000 marijuana plants in the past few days is proof that Asian crime lords are moving their operations from West to East.

Raids in the rural New Brunswick communities of Adamsville, Fredericton Junction and Millville this week have uncovered large marijuana grow operations and resulted in the arrests of five people of Asian descent.

The raid in Adamsville, near Moncton, N.B., netted over 20,000 plants -- one of the largest outdoor grow-op seizures in Canadian history.

Add to that a recent bust in Torbrook, N.S., where 9,000 marijuana plants were taken and RCMP officials say it adds up to a major geographical shift for Asian organized crime.

"We call it the green tide," said RCMP Staff. Sgt. Bob Power at a Fredericton news conference on Thursday.

"We've seen a proliferation of marijuana grow-ops move from West to East over the past three to five years."

Power said it's likely Asian crime families have been driven to provinces like New Brunswick and Nova Scotia because of intensive law enforcement in the West.

He said it's expected more fields will be discovered in New Brunswick.

The RCMP is appealing to the public for help in identifying suspicious activities, in rural areas and in suburban homes -- another favorite location for the illegal marijuana operations.

Power said he has been in contact with NB Power to ask the utility to watch for unusual electricity consumption patterns.

As well, realtors in the province are asked to be on the look-out for foreigners anxious to buy large tracts of land in remote areas.

He said the grow-ops are hard to stop.

"The potential for profits is extremely high, the risk of detection is relatively low and the punitive measures are not an issue for organized crime," he said.

The biggest overall seizure ever in Canada was 25,000 plants taken after police found a huge marijuana grow-op inside a former Molson brewery near Barrie, Ont. last year.

While the grow-ops have been moving East, they also have been heading north in Ontario where pot growers are taking advantage of rural opportunities.

More than 21,000 marijuana plants were seized earlier this summer from behind a home in Iroquois Falls, Ont., about 70 kilometres northeast of Timmins.

"We're seeing a trend where we see grow operators across the province move further north, and increase in size," Det.-Insp. Frank Elbers of the Ontario Provincial Police said after the Timmins raid.

"The most alarming thing is the size of the grows we're seeing."

Elbers said he wouldn't be surprised to find that the trend, now so noticeable in Ontario, is also prevalent in Quebec.

Power said profits from grow-ops are used to fuel other crimes, such as the smuggling of illegal aliens and firearms.

He said that although Asian crime gangs are linked to the most recent grow-op discoveries in New Brunswick, traditional organized crime, Eastern European mobs and motorcycle gangs are also involved in the lucrative business.

"It is a symptom of a much larger problem that the police have identified not only in New Brunswick but across Canada," Power said.

"It is the safety of our homes and our communities here that concerns the police and should concern all citizens, safety from organized crime."

Police in Cross Keys, Manchester, are hunting for a panty thief who has been leaving love notes for his victims.

The notorious 'Panty Man', as he has become known, has been stealing female underwear from clothes lines for several months now.

Residents say the suspected man has a liking for older women. He is alleged to ejaculate on panties which he then leaves on the ground along with a note professing his love for the victims.

A note left for Lorna Williams, 38, is said to have read: "I'm sorry that I thief your panty but I cannot hold the feelings for you... ."

Rush out

Williams, who encountered the suspect about a month ago, surprised the pervert and chased him away. "... Mi hear footstep inna di yaad and when mi look a him mi see a tek off mi panty dem ... Mi grab mi cutlass and rush out but di man way too quick fi me so him get weh before anybody else coulda reach," Williams said.

At least two other women, have confirmed receiving notes from the thief.

The Area Three police have confirmed the residents' claims and say they have received several reports of the man's action.

"We have heard of the so-called Panty Man ...As a matter of fact we have received several reports and are investigating so we can capture him," Inspector Martin Hines of the Area Three police said.

Another victim, Maxine Blackwood, 42, encountered the man a little over a week ago. "Him jus nasty, Mi tired fi a complain bout him. As mi hang out mi panty dem and mi back turn him come tek dem offa di line inna broad daylight and all nasty dem up an lef it same place...Mi affi jus bun dem up when mi si dem," she said.

Both women are sure they can identify the man and they suspect that he is in his mid 20s.

Russell has to shell out 40K per month to Kimora so her, his daughters, and Djimon can try to survive in this harsh world:

Life in the fab lane just got a little more fab for Kimora Lee Simmons.

The 33-year-old ex-wife of Russell Simmons will receive $40,000 a month in child support from the hip-hop mogul, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge ruled Thursday.

Kimora, who stars in the reality show Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane, will have sole custody of their two daughters - 9-year-old Ming and 6-year-old Aoki.

She also will have final say on whether her daughters appear on her reality TV show. Her 51-year-old ex has visitation rights.

The couples divorce was finalized in January. She filed for divorce in March2008, citing irreconcilable differences.

Wowsers, thats a lot of gosh darn money, man.  It aint nothing to a baller like Uncle Russ, though.
